I know that it is a thankless job or rather a job that you would rather not have or need but THANK YOU to @jupiter , @greyeagle , and @bert for being the "fun" police here in GPL land.  The insane amount of immature, insensitive, thoughtless, and etc. posts I've seen on all kinds of social media in the last month I know I can come here to some semblance of rational social media posting.  We are a small enough group to steer to keep within the simple two rules of posting here unlike all other modes of social media which sticks to their "cat herding" mentality.

So again...thank you!

I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!

I have to admit, I don't hate NoDak AS much after being to Drekker and Junkyard this weekend, but frankly, it's basically Moorhead, so, not really NoDak in the real sense...

Fargo has done a great job with its downtown.

I've only been to Mick's Office in Moorehead once but the burgers and atmosphere (dive bar!) was fantastic!

Yes, Brewhalla. And Junkyard has a new place over there, also. (The old Junkyard still exists)

Good stuff!

(Except the branch that fell the 4th weekend and we’re burning this evening was huge and it’s fortunate no one was nearby when it did its swan dive)

My eldest boy will be a Sr. at the U this fall. He and friends are renting a house on Summit for the year and per pictures it's nicer than any place I ever lived while in college. The inside has been completely refurbished, while the outside looks like a typical Summit Ave style house.

What's also cool is that 3 of his roommates are his first Fr roommate from the dorm, and 2 friends they met that year on the same floor and have subsequently lived with every year since. After seeing so many roommate horror stories from friends while in college, it's great he's been able to find people to bond with like that, but also finding them worth living with which can sometimes be wholly different than just being friends with someone.

The other nice item is that the house is big enough for 5 people. This fall our youngest is doing 1 semester at Korea University in Seoul.  In their shared circle of friends, they happen to have 1 kid that only has the fall semester left before graduation. He will live in the house for this coming term, and then when the youngest comes back from Korea he will move into the house for the spring term.  Pretty serendipitous.

That’s awesome! My older sister lived on summit in a house(basement apartment) with a couple friends when I was in my early 20’s. Man were them the days, we’d go to twins games at the dome and sit in 6.00 seats in center field and drink 40.00 worth of beer and I’d crash there for the weekend. Billy’s on grand was a hot spot for barley pops back then. My daughter now is going into year 2 at the U so out of the dorm now and have their apartment in dinkytown. Not a fan of the location so much because of the crime lately but the friends she made in dorm life are roommates this coming year. I’m 2 hours away so not a long distance. They had watch parties on the floor in her dorm room for “the bachelor” every Monday night and we’d text about which girls were the worst snobs.😂. Simple way to have a common conversation that helped stay connected over the winter.

@g-manpuck  Congrats! I hope he rebels against the parents and becomes a Gopher fan, though. 😉

Having a great vacation with friends that I see less often than I hope for, with perfect weather, and great memories along the way. A good friend said this weekend, "We're all getting older, and we don't know what's in store, but we can look back, and say, 'Hey, that was a helluva time.'" Smile

My daughter isn't really passionate about the Hawks like me but she does prefer the Hawks over the Gophers.  My SIL doesn't really care about sports so there is no real influence there.  That said...will I influence my granddaughter to be a Hawkeye fan?  Damn straight!  My wife already has a couple outfits for her to wear.  I will say though when it comes to college hockey I will lose out, both my daughter and SIL are purple cow fans...so boo.

Finding the exact perfect seasoning (Tajin) for Mexican street corn.  I have an obsession.  Great time of the year.

Also see Red Ron’s Garden Relish for my brat.

Heres an easy stove top street corn recipe if you don’t want to deal with messy cobs:

Cut corn off 1/2 doz ears.  Mix 2-3 T Mayo, 1 T lime juice, 2 tsp Tajin or good ol’ chili powder in a small bowl.  Sauté corn in skillet with a drizzle of olive oil, sauté until done (you’ll smell the corn).  Mix in serving bowl with the above sauce.  Top with either Mexican cheese or good Parmesan.

It’s great cold.

Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

I prefer to eat off the cob as cutting the kernels off creates as big of a mess.

But every year I cook up a bunch ears of corn and cut the kernels off and bag up for the winter.  I will try this for my winter corn off the cob.  I highly recommend cooking the corn on the cob first and THEN cutting off the kernels as the cob imparts great flavor.

Similar to cooking potatoes for home-made potato salad.  Must slow boil the potatoes with skin on, cool, and then peel.  The cooked peel will greatly add to the flavor of the potato and thus you'll have a superior salad.

If you ever find yourself on/near St. Paul's lower west side on a Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon during the summer El Burrito Mercado sells Elote from its outside grill stand.  It's heaven.

Speaking of corn, I don't know if any of the local Thai restaurants there serve Thai corn salad, but it's one of my favorite Thai dishes and so refreshing in the summer heat.

This recipe looks like it would do the job: https://www.eater.com/2017/6/17/15365598/thai-corn-salad

I first heard about it from my coworker back in the 90s who used to live near El Burrito.  I've been there once and the food was excellent.  [Cora's Chicken Wings nearby is another gem].

It's too far for me to go regularly, but we also find it at the MPLS Farmers market and when we go my oldest and I always get the elote.  Now that I can make it myself we eat it regularly at home and my next trip to the Farmers market will likely involve breakfast burrito or crepes or egg rolls.  LOL

Looks good, minus the shrimp.

I'd have to find bird's eye chilis.  If they're the same as the "bird peppers", my friend brought back from Guyana.... I may need a fire extinguisher.

Shrimp can definitely be optional, and a bird's eye chili is the same as a Thai chili which I think most grocers have now days. At worst Lunds, Byerlys or any Asian grocery store should have them.

chili

How does one start a new topic?  The Olympics need a place to discuss.  We’ve already missed that bonkers Opening Ceremony, but lots of competition and MN athletes coming up.

@frozen4champs

Drove out to the cabin in Mt. on July 12th and got back this past Saturday, the 27th. Seeing all the winter wheat crops already on the highline (Hwy 2) being harvested or ready to go in a week. It was a wet Spring, but a very dry and hot summer to start harvest early. I also noticed over 90% of the crops were running Case. Stopped by a friends place and it got brought up in conversation. He was saying the one of the largest Case dealerships (Ethridge, Mt) in the world has several dealerships along the highline and throughout the state. As compared to North Dakota and Minnesota, John Deere defiantly is the more popular choice.

The special that Bally did on Lou Nanne something called raised Minnesotan was really good. Lou basically telling stories from back in the day, one of my favorites was when he went to the equipment manager for his gear as a gopher day one. He asks Lou if he was a freshman, Lou thought he asked if he was a French man, so he said no I’m Italian.

The Vikings apparently canceled tonight's scheduled night practice.  I didn't know this was a big thing.

But Tommy Kramer just threw it out to everyone on Twitter that if they came into town for tonight's scrimmage they could come over to his place for photos and autographs.

TK does this sort of thing frequently.

He moved near a park not far from my house and he will randomly go to the park and invite people over for autographs.  Or if something shitty happens to some kid he will invite them to sit in his suite for a Vikings game.  Such a great dude.

Thanks @karlsson   I've been watching a couple watering hole cams in the Namib desert recently too.  But this is a great find for the duration of the fair.

This one always makes me both smile and get a little misty.

Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

Frank Serratore on the Kevin Gorg podcast. Serratore is always a simple pleasure. Lots of fun stories as expected.

While long retired from my old fantasy football league, having Merril Hoge respond to a request from a current member is quite FREAKING AWESOME. It's the league's 33rd year, which was Hoge's number when he played. Gave multiple shoutouts to league members, and explained why he chose 33 as his number. He was an icon to us growing up. Simple pleasures, as the thread says. Smile

When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.

Getting a good night of sleep for the first time in about a week last night.  We were in Wisconsin for a wedding last weekend so we stayed in a cabin with uncomfortable beds and then I was sick to begin this week.  I tried Nyquil and ZZquil and nothing would knock me out for more than a couple hours.  Last night with no help from either of those things I slept great...it feels good to start the day not dragging ass.

I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!

My dad had a 2nd bout of prostrate cancer. His first was nearly 15 years ago. He was diagnosed again this last fall and after several sessions of radiation and other treatments, last week his lab results came back cancer free!!!
