Oh please, a classic cocktail is a thing of beauty. I hate most newish drinks, too sweet. God help us over Sex on the Beach. But a classic daiquiri, a Sidecar, a Manhattan? They are perfection in a glass.
With this I agree.
Plus I've been drinking Manhattan's & Old Fashioneds since I was in my early thirties which is 25+ years ago (Oi!) so if that makes me a hipster I need to get a stupid hat, grow my hair for a manbun (which I could do), and grow a stupid looking beard (which I can't do).

Manhattans and Old Fashions are for old people and Hipsters who cant stand the taste of booze. Mojitos are for 21 year old coeds who get it cause they have no idea what it is.
If you need to mix your drink you are doing it wrong! If you need your whiskey or bourbon sweet then just order a wine cooler and be done with it ? ? ?
What’s a cocktail?
The beauty about these old-style/classic drinks is that if one makes them incorrectly, they taste like crap. But a GOOD one...oh, man.
Hell, I still go out and get a good mint julep on Derby Day.
And what Steve_MN said about whiskey. A vast majority of the time, it's 2 fingers, neat. Period.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
I prefer a good bourbon and will admit to having it on the rocks normally vs neat but this past yr I had to spend some time in Pittsburgh for work and a colleague and I taste tested the towns best old fashioneds…it wasn’t a bad thing.

One I only discovered recently, but really like, is a Boulevardier. So good but it's hit or miss if a bartender can make it.
We hosted YE's rehearsal dinner at The Lex and wow can that place make a cocktail. We had included their signature Old Fashioned (the #9 on their menu) and their Gin & Tonic at the bar.....so good! Mrs. GE, who doesn't like whiskey, even had a few sips of the #9 when we tried it.

Trust me my fellow bartenders are much colder about it...unless they work at Hipster joints 😉
I could get into legit reasons not to drink that stuff, but I much prefer laughing at people when they are hung over even though their drinks are watered down ?

I will pay money to see this ?
BTW every time I have this argument is a simple pleasure for so many reasons! I love how passionate people get about it! As a drinker I get one side and as a bartender I get the other so it is just fun all around!
Mixing is just not my thing but if a region has a drink (like a New Orleans Sazerac style) I will have one. Old Fashions and Manhattans are just too syrupy and sweet so I can't. (It's why I'm not a Rye person usually) Even if I could they are recipes for hangovers...

No, probably easier to just say I was a bartender. I still judge other bartenders by their ability to pour a good cocktail. A GOOD cocktail…not the latest, not the strongest, but a well crafted, properly measured and mixed, high quality booze cocktail. I like a good scotch as much as the next but it doesn’t require any skill to order or pour 2 fingers. Now a great Sidecar? That requires skill.
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

I have mint and simple syrup in my fridge as we speak for a mint julep.
Handy can look down his nose at people who enjoy cocktails while he sips straight booze. I prefer a nicely made cocktail.
The Whisky Sour at The Merchant in Madison is something I look forward to every year. Tastes a bit creamy with the egg white shaken in. A great dirty martini. A well made Long Island. A margarita on a hot day? Wow.
To me those sound so much better than which brand and age of rye will I sip today.

Crushed ice. You must use crushed ice.

This has all the makings of arguing about which style of beer is the best to drink. You like what you like. If a bartender doesn't like to mix those types of drinks where they work...go find another bar to work at, there are always places looking for bartenders. Also, as a patron if you don't like how they pour...go find another place that pours how you like.
I'm a beer guy so I'm not going to argue in favor of either side, bartender or patron. The only thing I'll complain about is the needy patron or the snotty/crappy/inattentive bartender/server.

Does the drink snob scoff at beer snobs?
Inquiring minds want to know. ?
Life is too short for cheap beer….runs for cover.
My favorite beers: Cold & free

I dont waste time on beer so drink whatever flavored water you like! You are just renting it anyways ? I make exceptions when needed but its very very rare. Never been my thing especially draft beer. I would rather drink wine...
And I am not a drink snob...I am a mix snob! I don't judge the liquor I judge how you choose to waste it by masking it. ? ?
Its much like people who drink coffee at a coffee shop...if your order takes more than a couple words or ingredients then you don't really like coffee so why waste the time and calories? Same with liquor. Just a personal feeling. When I quit drinking pop I quit mixing drinks for the most part and quit drinking "sweeter" whiskeys like Rye. (not always some taste great on the rocks)
I would never work at a place that is known for making those types of drinks though I make them pretty well. I never deny people when asked but I will joke with them about it and it is always in good fun. Same with beer...
Look I am not above getting made fun of I drink friggin White Claws (and other varietals) all the time! Great way to extend out the drinking and some taste great! I love when people mock me for it...especially since they end up drinking them with me! Easiest and cheapest way to get drunk in Vegas too! ($4 24 ouncer at Walgreens/CVS) Plus you don't feel bloated or sick at any point and if you are prone to hangovers (not me!) they really help that out as well.
Ultimately its about whatever gets you there! If we cant have some fun poking fun at each other while out having a few then that takes away from the fun IMHO.

I finally tried a Mint Julep a couple weeks ago...I dont get it. I dont look down my nose at them (or you for drinking them) but my girlfriend mocked me for it...and I respected that!
Labels and aging is overrated. I love bourbon...but I would rather drink a $30ish bottle of Basil Hayden over a $50 bottle of Blanton's or $$$$$ Pappy Van Winkle. I have been lucky to try all sorts of stuff over the years and very rarely has the higher end stuff been worth the money or the "prestige" that people give them. I got a buddy who has over 100 different whiskeys from all over the world ranging from cheap to big name expensive. He loves to talk up the expensive stuff and use it to prove how cultured he is. I always grab the bottle of Jameson or Woodford or Basil or Buffalo Trace and it just irks him! When I didn't worship his bottle of Pappy it almost made him cry 😀
Wine is a different beast...but outside of certain things like tequila I find I like stuff that is above rail but below snooty hipster class.
If you can find a $50 Blanton's bottle, let me know! Damn! 😉
I drink for taste, and oftentimes it's the mood I'm in.
Unless it's on the menu, if it's busy, I won't order a "complicated" drink like an Old Fashioned or Mojito or anything like that. That's the easy way to get on the sh*list. 2 ingredients: vodka-tonic, 7&7, Rum/Coke, etc.
There are beer/booze snobs who care what you drink, and there are beer/booze geeks who don't care, but are into exploring new and different things. I'm the latter. Hell, I order a Naturdays when hit up a certain bar in Houghton, just because, and many of my friends have tried it, and said (I quote): "I WANT to hate it, but..."
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
I cant remember the last time I was hungiver despite the occasional mixed drink or IPA Huh
?
I can count the hangovers I've had in my lifetime on one hand, and also can guarantee those were to lack of sleep (as in, less than 5 hours or so).
But back to the main topic: what a weather streak for the past couple of days. Love it!

I get hangovers left and right nowadays, but I’m drinking a lot of craft beer. I’ve noticed the nights I drink liquor I don’t have half the problems the next morning.

The geeks are my jam. I may not like what they like but I love people talking passionately about stuff they care about. That is how I got into drinking wine I have friends who are total geeks on everything from taste to process. Tequila too. Tell me the WHY and I am always interested.
Pretty sure I saw Blantons for $54 a few weeks ago but I will have to rebook. I used to have a sweet hookup for that (bar let us drink it for free cause they couldn't sell it and my boys used to be bar manager there) so to me it is not something all that special. Honestly I would rather drink Buffalo Trace (the Distiller) low end stuff. Better value and taste.

I really haven't tried drinking many whiskey's neat, but Buffalo Trace is the only one that I can say I really enjoyed.

I have always enjoyed BT and Woodford for the right price. Heck even Monkey Shoulder or Bulleit on the lower price spectrum will do the trick for me.
Bulleit Rye is really good for Manhattan's.

Woodford is another that for the price runs circles around the snobby stuff. Hell the double oaked costs as much as Blantons and smokes it all day long.
Evan Williams single barrel used to be readily available at $20 a bottle and that was a chefs kiss!
Jim Beam Black is also a good choice, at least in my world.

Chug it straight from the bottle?!?!?!
Keep your stick on the ice...
Bulleit Rye, Carpano Antica Formula vermouth, Peychauds Bitters, 1 Luxardo cherry dropped in the bottom (no need to add more of the syrup unless you want to, just enough sticks to the cherry to work)Bulleit Rye is really good for Manhattan's.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

BT was my go to. Woodford is always solid. And laugh as you may, but for value, Evan Williams is excellent for both mixing and straight up.
The last BT I saw? $60. I laughed. Blantons? $180. Laughed. Elmer T Lee? $200. Laughed harder. As for ryes, I am particular, saw a Barrel Proof Traverse City Rye at a local store for $100, bought 2. The regular is about $45 in MI, and it's one of the best ryes I've had (Whistle Pig is alright, but still overpriced).

Elmer T Lee goes nicely with RC Cola and a luxardo cherry.
Combining two simple pleasures - one of my favorite movies is Black Hawk Down and one of the real life soldiers (who was played by Eric Bana) now is an owner of Hooten Young whiskey. As mentioned above, it is out of my normal whiskey budget but a bucket list item I have to try.

I second the nomination of the Number Nine at the Lex. I've gone there several times just to have it, most recently last Friday. We had been at a large dinner with a speaker, and of course the food was mediocre at best. The drinks were expensive and mixed for speed rather than taste. I suggested to our group that we end our evening with a #9 at the Lex; it did the trick.

We hosted over 50 for the dinner at the Lex food and the dinners were as good as the #9. They are an absolute pleasure to work with.

This winter I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Being my brother died of this when he was the age I am now the doctor said my best option was to have surgery. In February I had a radical prostatectomy at Mayo.
I have run out of superlatives to describe my Mayo surgeon. I have never met a doctor who is so caring and considerate. My wife and I met with him twice before surgery. Each time we had a list of questions which he patiently and politely answered. He never rushed us or made us feel like we were wasting his time.
I've had several issues arise since surgery. I've sent questions to my patient portal and sometimes if it's bad I'll call there. Even though my Doctor has a whole team under him he will promptly respond himself, sometimes late at night when he gets out of surgery.
I just had my3 month follow up. Doctor said as of right now my cancer is undetectable and there is a high probability it will stay that way. As we were leaving I thanked him for being so good to me to which he replied "It's been my pleasure."

I am glad you had a positive outcome and great recovery!
I had a great experience (as much as you can having brain surgery…) at Mayo and would not hesitate to go there for any complicated health issues.
we are insanely lucky to have access to a top healthcare facility in the world, essentially in our backyard.

Amazing story and so happy for you and your family. Selfishly I'm happy for us here who will get to interact with you here on GPL far into the future. Take care and happy healing......hope you guys do something wicked special to celebrate this wonderful news.

This is so true!
When my daughter lost her hearing and needed surgery (and it was basically brain surgery) we were so thankful to have Mayo and The U in our backyard. We ended up selecting The U, primarily because of the weekly Audiologist follow up, and having that choice was amazing.

My mother in law had a double lung transplant there right before Thanksgiving. Even thru multiple complication and issues Mayo drs and nurses are all top notch! Highly recommend them and would not hesitate to go there at all.
My sister and a best friend were both treated for cancer at Mayo within the past 2 years - ironically for the same type. Both made it through after some battles and as of today look like they've won. Both had nothing but high praise for the care they received.
Tonight ended G-man’s high school athletics career. Bittersweet for sure. Nine years of football practices and games, shuttling him and a few years of coaching him. Three years each of wrestling and lacrosse.
It has been fun for my wife and I for sure. He enjoyed it as well with his friends. Each passing season will be different going forward but what a ride it has been.
