That Erbert and Gerbert’s was a great college job. They provided the delivery vehicle and gas. I pretty much was the Thu-Sat. eve to close shift (If I recall 6pm-2am). Lots of deliveries to all the gentlemen clubs and the gals tipped very well. I would also run a taxi service in the delivery car. I would pick up people (lots of drunks) waiting outside (for a taxi) of the dance clubs and gentlemen clubs and give them rides to their hotels. Once a guy paid me $40 to give him a ride out to Burnsville.
I don’t think you’re supposed to out Rube like this
I don’t live in Burnsville. I live quite a ways from there, actually.
i think the joke because you mentioned you worked in Burnsville….

Yeah, that was um, well, if one does the math, a generation ago. 😉 I think half the board was a twinkle in their daddy's eye.

Back in the day, I’d go w/friends to have a drink and people watch. That was about it. The people watching was great.
Back in the mid 90s after college I work 2 years at Erbert & Gerberts. It was across the street from Brother’s and next door to what was the Pickled Parrot. We would make deals with most of those restaurants along 1st Ave and downtown. We would call them or they would call us to trade food. I always felt we got the better deals trading subs for pizza, ribs, hamburgers and so on with the various restaurants.
Trading food/etc was a mainstay in the industry. I worked for Pizza N Pasta at Burnsville Mall in my early 20s as a side gig. Traded pizza for Gloria Jean’s (quad espresso w/mocha; I was doing open-close on weekends; yep, needed the juice to work that shift).
Worked at a Blockbuster Video and we would trade movie rentals for Pizza as well.

Regarding that BBQ list - I can’t personally vouch but some spots not named in that list that I’ve seen recommended:
-Smoak in Rochester
-Roosters in St. Paul
-Food truck in Grand Rapids but the name was lost
-Mr. Pig Stuff in Shakopee but they said their sauces are subpar
-Old Southern Smokehouse in Arden Hills

Old Southern is OK. Not as good as Q Fanatic or Jelly Bean and Julias. Old Southern is a fast casual concept that was started up by Famous Dave Anderson and his son.
I actually prefer the fast casual Famous Dave's in Coon Rapids to Old Southern.
Best fast casual BBQ I've ever had was 4 Rivers Smokehouse in the Orlando, FL area.
I'm Memphis style of BBQ fan. Dry rub with very little to no sauce. Though I'll any kind as long as it has little to no sauce. Sauce on the side for an occasional dip.

I like dry rub on ribs with no sauce too, but I've eaten ribs at Rendezvous in Memphis and was not a fan of true "Memphis style". It's was almost as if they added additional seasoning to the ribs after cooking.

Not a fan of this.
My preference is a thin layer of sauce that is slightly caramelized by the smoker. Anyone who slathers the sauce on is a heretic. No sauce should so plentiful it can drip off a rib.

Agree... sometimes that extra seasoning on Memphis rub can be too much. Just sprinkle a little bit and not coat it.

I'm in this camp, too. When I make wings I cook them for 10-15 minutes then toss in sauce of choice then broil them for an additional 10-15 minutes (flipping once) so they are not gooey.

The one flavor of wings I really like that are a bit messy are the Huckleberry wings at the Bulldog in Whitefish, Mt. Even my wife likes them and she is not a wing person.

Rendezvous is a 2nd or 3rd rate BBQ joint in Memphis. If you want best of the best you go to Central, Germantown Commissary, or Memphis BBQ Company
Will be interesting to see how this will end up. My experience is when companies that are having trouble buy other companies that are having trouble it usually means doom. They are trying this experiment in Maple Grove.

I wish I had know this before I went to Memphis. A group of us went to Rendezvous on recommendation of locals. It was my least favorite BBQ restaurant I've been to. My list of BBQ regions so far is:
1, KC
2. GA (Savannah)
3. TX (Houston)
.
.
.
4. Memphis
Although I have only eaten BBQ in Houston, so the TX vote may not count. I'd really like to visit Austin.
Creekside Supper Club is fantastic. It is exactly what it says it is…a supper club, but somehow cooler. From the tacky water fall in the front corner to the Schmitt beer signs above the bar, picture the classic WI restaurant transported to S Chicago Ave. I started my evening with a Sidecar cocktail and hubster had a martini. We split the relish tray: smoked trout spread, cheese curds, pickled veggies and sliced venison sausage, brown bread. It was perfect for 2 and every single item was delicious. He had the bone in pork chop, I had a small steak, we both had twice baked potatoes and a salad. Then I had a Pink Squirrel ice cream cocktail for dessert. It was waaaaaay to much food, but worth it.
Dim lights, garage sale art work on the walls, friendly service. Its fancy enough for a celebratory dinner, but regular enough for a group of friends.
We didn’t order the popovers but practically every table had them.
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

I think KC BBQ is so good cause of their sauce. It’s a little sweeter but all the ones I’ve had also have a definite Worcestershire flavor to it which I love.

At King’s Place right now because of this post. My first time here. Love the place. Over 100 burgers to choose from. Great Bloody Mary. Finished off with a Hamm’s.
Apparently St Thomas is hosting a baseball game on the Miesville fields and lots of people are in town for it. Town is hopping. Great weekend atmosphere! Thanks for the note.

Hopefully you got in before mass was over too. We made that mistake once and won’t ever again
For as much as we go to Hastings we don’t get to Kings nearly enough

You have to go back during the off-season from baseball on Wednesdays. They have a sampler plater… Four sliders of your choice. So you get to sample more of their menu. I’ve done this 4 or 5 times.

My wife and I were talking about how they need to have this as an option. But I don't see myself driving to Miesville on any Wednesday, much less during the off season.
I asked them about that and why it's not an option more often. And basically it's to busy during baseball season to be cooking sliders and keeping the grills from overload for all the orders.

That is a hell of a good problem to have. Good for them. They likely have more people in that one restaurant at any given time of day during the summer than they have in total town population (136). Last weekend, hardly anyone in the building was local. Lots of Eden Prairie and St Paul clothing items. Quite the draw.
If your up for a supper club setting, Wiederholt’s Supper Club is across the street from King’s. We had plans to eat there this past New Year’s Eve but they fell through so we ended up at King’s. Though we did go over for dessert. The dessert was above avg. Though all the food being served looked off the charts. And I’ve never heard a bad report about the food over the years.

They do. Them and House Of Coates off of Hwy 52 (also tremendous burgers). I do need to get back there. Met up with Karlsson and Jane Fonda/wife a few months back at the latter's place, and we couldn't even get in the door at King's.

Stopped in at Old Chicago (Roseville) on Saturday before heading up “north” to a friends house for a bonfire. They took off the Nachos Grande on the menu. I asked why and the reply was that they only carried black beans and chips for that one item. Black beans and chips have a long shelf life. And Nachos Grande was one of, if not their #1 app on menu. They did this before and eventually it came back after numerous complaints. So instead I had the mea balls app and deep fried mushrooms app (which were absolutely great).
Some times I just scratch my head what corp. thinks and does at so many businesses. Sometimes I wonder if they get a thrill out of seeing failure.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Even if it was their top selling app it may not have been the most profitable and the beans and chips taking up space may not be the most efficient. Generally restaurants trying to do too many different things is a bad sign for quality, but I checked and even without nachos they are still trying to do about 100 different things.
Being an OC regular for so many years, I agree OC menu is very busy. They try to hard to please the masses than just the majority.
Keep your stick on the ice...
I think that is one of the biggest downfalls of restaurants today is having too big of menu thus making the customer experience very complicated. I don't think you need 40 burgers and 50 beers on tap to have a good restaurant. Keep things simple and do them very well with great customer service. This is something here in Mankato is a failure in every restaurant. Even the Loose Moose where my wife works the kitchen can't cook the food consistently good and there are no basic items on the menu. Sorry for the brag but my wife is the best waitress there and it's not even close.
My requirements for a good restaurant; a simple menu that doesn't take 5 minutes to read over where the food is well above par and you don't need a bank loan for (I understand food costs are high right now but restaurants here in Mankato were getting bad before 2020), and decent selection of local and national beers on tap.

If you're doing 50 things, you're probably doing 50 things poorly.
I don’t think you need 40 burgers
Agree… King’s has nearly 100 burgers, but that’s their thing. That’s the novelty of going there. Though like you mention some places have way to big of a menu, just in the burger selection.
With something like that, it's more that they have 3 burgers and 20 toppings that get added in different combinations (never having been there, but I suspect it's a good guess)
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

King's is like a mexican restaurant. They have about 20 ingredients that can be easily mixed and matched into couple hundred unique options. It doesn't really change the quality if they add a new combination.
I’m not ripping on King’s. It’s their thing and that is what makes it so popular. Around two dozen ingredients mixed and matched to make nearly 100 burgers. It’s other restaurants that I was referring to that have a busy menu. Like I said about OC. They try to please take masses and not the majority.

Interestingly, there was a video I watched last week on this very topic. The point of the huge menu at Old Chicago (or worse, Cheesecake Factory) isn't that it's great food. It's that you can go there with a group of people with wildly different tastes, and everyone in the group can find something that works for them.

I may need to take back what I've said in the past. Was up in Blaine and stopped into Canes for the first time in ten or so years. Went inside because I'm not a dummy waiting in that line and got my food almost instantly.
For under 11 bucks, I enjoyed it more than recent trips to CFA. Everything was more flavorful (albeit probably over the line of too much grease and salt so easy to have flavor). At that price in this current world, it's good cheap fast food. Just don't wait in a line of 30 cars for it.
We came home late Saturday night and drove past the Apple Valley Raising Canes at around 12:30... There was over a dozen vehicles in line... LoL!!!

Slow night apparently. I rarely see less than forty cars in line during the day.
Owning a Canes is a license to print money. Every single one that I have seen is always busy... all the time. Maybe I should purchase a franchise

Sorry but I think you're wrong about the flavor of Canes vs. CFA. Pretty sure Canes just uses flour and fries them up. No seasoning at all so if you don't like their sauce, you are SOL. CFA has seasoning which IMHO add to the experience. Plus I love the spicy at CFA. Not to say Canes doesn't have quality food. It's always fresh and cooked very well. It's just very plain. That's why I don't understand the hype Canes gets. It's exactly like going to a fancy ice cream shop and getting vanilla. Sure it's good, but come on! Way better stuff out there.
Yes you are definitely correct. Always go inside. Maplewood just opened up and walked right in to the counter. Woodbury always has a huge drive thru line and same thing there. Order almost right away.
Interesting...I see it the other way where CFA is basic and Canes is more flavorful. Either way, I think they are both over hyped and wouldn't wait in a two person line for either. I'm not a fast food lover though so take my word with a grain of salt.

The only Canes that I've been to or driven past that the drive thru isn't mass craziness... The one in Mpls. on Snelling Ave. and Lake St. Use to be an Arby's there but it burnt done in 2003 (electrical fire) and 2020 (riots). It's just a steady 3-5 cars at all times.
Maplewood just opened up and walked right in to the counter.
You definitely have your choice of fast food in Maplewood. Canes, across the street CFA and just down the street Popeye's.

I'd be curious how good the chicken sandwich is at MyBurger because they have bar none the best fries of any fast casual burger place and it's precisely because their fries have FLAVOR. They have a very nice Sri Racha mayo but you don't even need it because their fries are that good.
I will def hit them up again when I visit again in August.
MyBurger absolutely blows Five Guys and Shake Shack out of the water in the elevated fast food burger+fries competition.
