The chances I’d eat liver & onions are exponentially higher than the chances I’d eat lutefisk and I’m never eating liver and onions again.

I am the opposite. I don’t like lutefisk, but I can stomach a few bites. Liver, on the other hand, is the top of the list of things that shall not pass my lips.

I tried L & O once.  Never again.  Lutefisk is a non starter.

F liver and onions. And I have a lower opinion on lutefisk. That being said, my maternal side great-grandpa insisted on lutefisk for Christmas (he was direct off the boat from Oslo). The smell would last for days around the house. Good God, I don’t see how anyone could stand that.

Just up and eating tomatoes (they put sugar or salt on the slices or something)? No.

Salsa? Fine. Diced in a burrito? Fine. In a pizza sauce? Fine. You get the drift.

Overall tomatoes do suck. I can also usually only stand them in a non-chunky sauce/salsa form. Ketchup on fries but nothing else really.

Salsa has to be purée (Chili’s salsa consistency). Pizza sauce is great, as long as there is no chunks. Though I’ll eat sun dried tomatoes.

I found a good salsa that is thicccc, better than the Old Dutch, Tostito’s, etc crap. Curt’s Special Recipe. It’s a darn good salsa.

I’ll second this. They have several options for heat level. I like the hot and extra hot, while my fiance who can’t handle spice likes the pineapple and cilantro lime options.

On a tangentially related note, if you like unique hot sauces, the buttered tin in St. Paul has a couple that I really like. They go nicely with the absolutely gigantic breakfast burrito they serve.

Depending on how hot I want my hot sauce, I switch between Hell Raising Hot Sauce (MN company) or El Yucateco (which will burn your face off, if you use too much). Both have great flavor, which is key to me. It’s just not heat I want.

I’ll second you again on Yucateco. Haven’t had the other one. Totally agree it has to have flavor. When I make my own salsa I make it pretty hot but I roast or smoke several ingredients so it has a depth of flavor. At least in my mind it does.

Hell Raising is kinda MN hot. It’s advertised hotter than it actually is, but it’s a good sauce. The El Yuca…had a buddy try it last week, just a pinky dip, and he was WTF.

If you’re looking for a quick and decent gas station sandwich.  Both the turkey/swiss on cranberry wild rice bread and their egg salad on oat multigrain at Kwik Trip are excellent.

I am allergic to raw tomato.  Not Epi pen level, but highly sensitive.  Hives on my tongue, itchy, even getting tomato juice on my hands sets off a reaction.  It’s the acid, once cooked down in a sauce I’m fine.  I can’t eat fresh salsa and am careful with restaurant pasta sauces.  My dad was fine with tomatoes but had the same issue with pineapple, I’m fine with pineapple but no tomato, but it’s basically the same acid problem.

I thought the tanginess in a pineapple was from an enzyme and not acidity?

I love tomato and pineapple but can’t do kiwi or cantaloupe, makes my mouth itchy and tummy nauseous.

Love me some pickled herring on a cracker with cheese. Back in the mid 90’s, Liquor Lyle’s would serve it for free during happy hour. Just a big ol’ block of government cheese and a bucket of herring alongside sleeves of townhouse crackers. Add a pitcher of Bud Light and dinner was served!

The pizza at Kwik Trip is better than Caesar’s/Cici’s/etc by far. I know it’s not a high bar, but this IS a gas station we’re talking about. I’d even rank it above Pizza Hut.

My kids are a little older than yours but we used to be regulars at Don Pablo’s.  They loved playing with the tortilla dough that they’d give the kids (with cookie cutters).

Only been to three but of those three I’d take OMC 1, Buddy Boy’s 2, QFanatic 3. Have had zero urge to go back to QFanatic and would always head to ZZQ or Baker’s before it.

Smokeys is excellent but not as good as OMC or Buddy Boy.   The one that’s missing here is Big Bore BBQ up in Hanover.  It’s hands down the best BBQ I’ve had in MN and (even though it’s Texas style) is as good as any of the BBQ I would get on my frequent trips to Memphis

It’s hard to pass on Ted Cook’s. The only draw back is there is no in restaurant dining. It’s all take out… other than that it’s “nothing but the best”.

Back in the later 90s while in college I work 2 years at Erbert & Gerberts.  It was across the street from Brother’s and next door to what was the Pickled Parrot.  We would make deals with most of those restaurants along 1st Ave and downtown.  We would call them or they would call us to trade food.  I always felt we got the better deals trading subs for pizza, ribs, hamburgers and so on with the various restaurants.

Trading food/etc was a mainstay in the industry. I worked for Pizza N Pasta at Burnsville Mall in my early 20s as a side gig. Traded pizza for Gloria Jean’s (quad espresso w/mocha; I was doing open-close on weekends; yep, needed the juice to work that shift).

That Erbert and Gerbert’s was a great college job.  They provided the delivery vehicle and gas.  I pretty much was the Thu-Sat. eve to close shift (If I recall 6pm-2am).  Lots of deliveries to all the gentlemen clubs and the gals tipped very well. I would also run a taxi service in the delivery car.  I would pick up people (lots of drunks) waiting outside (for a taxi) of the dance clubs and gentlemen clubs and give them rides to their hotels.  Once a guy paid me $40 to give him a ride out to Burnsville.

Regarding that BBQ list – I can’t personally vouch but some spots not named in that list that I’ve seen recommended:

                      -Smoak in Rochester

                      -Roosters in St. Paul

-Food truck in Grand Rapids but the name was lost

-Mr. Pig Stuff in Shakopee but they said their sauces are subpar

-Old Southern Smokehouse in Arden Hills

Old Southern is OK.  Not as good as Q Fanatic or Jelly Bean and Julias.  Old Southern is a fast casual concept that was started up by Famous Dave Anderson and his son.

I actually prefer the fast casual Famous Dave’s in Coon Rapids to Old Southern.

Best fast casual BBQ I’ve ever had was 4 Rivers Smokehouse in the Orlando, FL area.

I’m Memphis style of BBQ fan.  Dry rub with very little to no sauce. Though I’ll any kind as long as it has little to no sauce. Sauce on the side for an occasional dip.

I like dry rub on ribs with no sauce too, but I’ve eaten ribs at Rendezvous in Memphis and was not a fan of true “Memphis style”.  It’s was almost as if they added additional seasoning to the ribs after cooking.

                      Not a fan of this.

My preference is a thin layer of sauce that is slightly caramelized by the smoker.  Anyone who slathers the sauce on is a heretic.  No sauce should so plentiful it can drip off a rib.

Agree… sometimes that extra seasoning on Memphis rub can be too much.  Just sprinkle a little bit and not coat it.

I’m in this camp, too. When I make wings I cook them for 10-15 minutes then toss in sauce of choice then broil them for an additional 10-15 minutes (flipping once) so they are not gooey.

I like dry rub on ribs with no sauce too, but I’ve eaten ribs at Rendezvous in Memphis and was not a fan of true “Memphis style”. It’s was almost as if they added additional seasoning to the ribs after cooking. See photo in link. https://hogsfly.com/news/best-ribs-in-america-charlie-vergos-rendezvous-memphis-tn/ Not a fan of this. My preference is a thin layer of sauce that is slightly caramelized by the smoker. Anyone who slathers the sauce on is a heretic. No sauce should so plentiful it can drip off a rib.

The one flavor of wings I really like that are a bit messy are the Huckleberry wings at the Bulldog in Whitefish, Mt.  Even my wife likes them and she is not a wing person.

Rendezvous is a 2nd or 3rd rate BBQ joint in Memphis.  If you want best of the best you go to Central, Germantown Commissary, or Memphis BBQ Company

Will be interesting to see how this will end up. My experience is when companies that are having trouble buy other companies that are having trouble it usually means doom. They are trying this experiment in Maple Grove.

I wish I had know this before I went to Memphis.  A group of us went to Rendezvous on recommendation of locals.  It was my least favorite BBQ restaurant I’ve been to.  My list of BBQ regions so far is:

                        1, KC

                        2. GA (Savannah)

                        3. TX (Houston)

                        .

                        .

                        .

                        4. Memphis

Although I have only eaten BBQ in Houston, so the TX vote may not count.  I’d really like to visit Austin.

Creekside Supper Club is fantastic.  It is exactly what it says it is…a supper club, but somehow cooler.  From the tacky water fall in the front corner to the Schmitt beer signs above the bar, picture the classic WI restaurant transported to S Chicago Ave.  I started my evening with a Sidecar cocktail and hubster had a martini.  We split the relish tray: smoked trout spread, cheese curds, pickled veggies and sliced venison sausage, brown bread.  It was perfect for 2 and every single item was delicious.  He had the bone in pork chop, I had a small steak, we both had twice baked potatoes and a salad.  Then I had a Pink Squirrel ice cream cocktail for dessert.  It was waaaaaay to much food, but worth it.
Dim lights, garage sale art work on the walls, friendly service.  Its fancy enough for a celebratory dinner, but regular enough for a group of friends.
We didn’t order the popovers but practically every table had them.

I think KC BBQ is so good cause of their sauce. It’s a little sweeter but all the ones I’ve had also have a definite Worcestershire flavor to it which I love.

At King’s Place right now because of this post.  My first time here.  Love the place.  Over 100 burgers to choose from.  Great Bloody Mary.  Finished off with a Hamm’s.

Apparently St Thomas is hosting a baseball game on the Miesville fields and lots of people are in town for it.  Town is hopping.  Great weekend atmosphere!  Thanks for the note.

You have to go back during the off-season from baseball on Wednesdays. They have a sampler plater… Four sliders of your choice. So you get to sample more of their menu. I’ve done this 4 or 5 times.

My wife and I were talking about how they need to have this as an option.  But I don’t see myself driving to Miesville on any Wednesday, much less during the off season.
