Really not liking what is happening at the Wisconsin State Journal (WSJ)... Our guy Todd Milewski is being pulled from covering the Badger hockey team and will be mostly on Badger BBall until they get a replacement for that job. The WSJ is going to have their news desk cover the hockey games. News desks at papers are already overwhelmed with having to cover so much, so I think the badger coverage is really gonna go down hill.

Yes we all hate the BADgers... But this is bad news for college hockey as a whole. Locally the Pioneer Press stopped sending reporters to games quite a few years ago. The Strib is there about 50% of the time, maybe that will pick up now that Gopher football is over? Who knows.

It may get to a point where just us "hobby" people are covering games... Who knows?

I saw that Todd was covering the hoops squad and was hoping that was just temporary, but I guess not. I remember he did not sound too optimistic about the newspaper industry when he was on the GPL podcast. As much as Jess drives me crazy sometimes, I am glad that he offers coverage and they send him to every game. We are also grateful of the coverage that GPL offers.

I know it's not local, and the following is NOT political, but CNN's NYE show is worth watching. Complete dumpster fire in a fun way. Turned it on after the Gophers game, and within 5 minutes, an F-bomb was dropped and a tequila shot was had. It's only 8:30 Fake Time. Grin

Trust me, it's funnier than all hell. Better than any of those other generic NYE shows out there.

Last year Cohen did shots and then went on a rant about how much the outgoing NYC mayor sucked and then said Ryan Seascrest had a “bunch of losers” performing on his show.

A tipsy Brian Cox coming in and schooling everyone that this whole shebang was first made a big deal by the Scots, like I did at parties back in the day, gave me the warm and fuzzies.

Brian Cox is the epitome of class and it was great that he brought them a bottle of champagne which Andy started in on. Kevin Hart was great ranting twice about them not letting the boys drink, drinking 2 tequila shots and saying shit so many times they had to start bleeping him. I wasn’t planning on watching any of the NYE stuff but once I put the CNN broadcast on my second TV I watched it the whole time along with football. Fun interviews with Sam Jackson, Jack Black and many more.

Were you in bed by 10:30 after your sparkling apple juice toast? ?

CNN may have been a disaster, but you can hardly call Dolly Parton a freak show.  There’s something for everyone on NYE…change the channel.

It is not Meatsauce... It is obvious to me who it is because he gave himself up when he left the local market to go national. But that is all I will say.

I've heard Common floated as well but they've had Common and Gerbie on the air at the same time before and I don't think they'd take the time or money required to prerecord one person and then play that loop. Would be far too risky to flub something.

The more prominent rumor I've heard is Kevin Seifert plays Gerbie, but they've had Seifert in studio while Carl called in too so idk.

Whoever it is, the bit is hilarious almost every single time.

If you google the two most popular names are Kevin Seifert and Greg Swedberg. With an occasional Common and even Chad Abbott.

If you have ever heard Swedberg talk you would know it isn't him.  Same with Chad Abbott.  They would not be able to hide certain aspects of their voice...I also believe Gerby predates Meatsauce being at KFAN by many years but I may be wrong.

I have heard 2 names from people who work in the radio industry but I never really cared enough to really look into it when I had contacts at KFAN back in the day.  I would say I am pretty certain who it is but since the bit is great either way I like not knowing for sure.  I also like that plenty of people still think he is real!

Yep. IIRC, early on he used to have some of his regulars like Sansevere and Gelfand on his podcast.( although I haven't listen to him for years)  I know Sansevere has his own podcast network now. There seems to be a couple of local "smaller fish" podcast groups emerging. Souhan's group and Hubbard's group are starting to have a diverse group of shows for about any interest. I listen to a couple of shows on each network.

Yeah, it might be best not to know.

Though yes, it is funny people think he is real.  The fact that the show has never had him on live or posted a picture is a give away.  The closes they had him "on live" was a couple years ago he was suppose to be at the State Fair.  And he drove his RV and couldn't find a parking spot and drove back to Elk Mound is another give way. And just the live bits are more giveaways. Pretty much if you think he is real, makes you almost a bigger moron than a fictional character. Just like when people get caught up in tv/movie characters and comment about them as they were real.

Not to nitpick but there really isn't granite on Lake Superior in Minnesota (there is in the UP of Michigan).  So maybe that means the Vikings really will win the Super Bowl????

Just a little knit pick thing but I was listening to the Beyond the Pond from last weekend and it hit me...Pat the Rat just clomps on everyone who he is broadcasting with.  He does it to PA on KFAN, he does it during Gopher games, and OMG he was bad this past weekend on BTP.  Don't get me wrong, he knows a lot and he is just an excitable personality who wants to share and give input but man can he just overtake an interview or broadcast at times.

Again, he is a Gopher hockey legend and I love his passion for the game AND the Gophers...but just chill a little Pat.

I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!

Something has to give.  Athletes are making insane amounts of money, mostly due to lucrative TV contracts.  At some point consumers aren't going to be willing to pay those prices.  Maybe this is the beginning of that?

I had a similar observation elsewhere.  I just don't know how sustainable pro leagues are at their current operating model.  If TV revenues drop there's no way those losses could be recouped via increased ticket prices. Most fans are already priced out as it is.
