Anyone have any experience or recommendations regarding portable air purifiers? My granddaughter is coming to visit for a couple of months. She has MD and has some respiratory issues. I’ve seen some in the $300-$400 price range which cover approximately 400 sqft. Thanks very much!!!

I actually bought one a couple months ago... a Coway AirMega 400 but ended up returning it before we took it out of the box.  A couple days after we ordered it I spoke to an HVAC guy and he suggested an ionic air purifier that does "whole house" purification though our HVAC system.   That was about $750 if I recall so we opted for that instead.

The biggest difference in our situations though is your granddaughter isn't there all the time.   Our 4 year old appears to either have some kind of allergy or asthma that may be induced by seasonal allergies, so we thought a whole house solution might be better

Has anyone bought a new car in the last 6-12 months?  We're likely going to make a final decision on a car and I'm curious how you may have gone about deciding where to buy it.   I do a lot of my own research on cars and the salespeople are generally pretty surprised when they realize I know almost as much about their vehicles as they do, so the only thing I need them for is to help setup a test drive and order the vehicle given most of what we're looking at is sold before it ever hits the lot.

In light of that I've got multiple dealerships from all over town bugging me about buying from them because I was reaching out to find a vehicle to drive.  If I am going to pay sticker then I'm thinking about seeing if I can get something "extra" out of them since I'm getting the exact car regardless of where I do it.

I'm curious if anyone has tried this and how it has worked.

Not firmly decided yet.   We're driving an Atlas on Friday and will make a decision after that.    I suspect it will be the Palisade though

We've started using Dean's for that stuff and have generally been happy with the service

Try going to fb and joining the Plymouth and Golden Valley community groups. Ask for local area plumbers or water heater services. If you were south of the river I would give you a list of trusted plumbers.

I've had great service recently from Bonfe.  My furnace blower motor was dying back in December, I called the next morning, they came out that afternoon, offered to loan some space heaters if needed for the night (they weren't, once the fan got up to speed and heated up, it was fine so I just left the fan running overnight).  Had the new one in place and running fine just over 24 hours from my initial call.  City inspector said they needed to adjust the combustion air intake, so I called them after he left... first thing the next morning tech was out and fixed it as part of the initial service, included in the initial install payment.

They also do water heaters/plumbing/etc.

Bonfe installed our last furnace and AC.  No real complaints with them either

I used Wi-Fi from a star link system this weekend while on a fishing trip in remote Canada.  It worked exceptionally well.  I was very surprised by it.

I don't have any specific recommendations, but if you're doing the full set, try looking in to a heat pump as part of the system. Basically some valves to reverse coolant flow so he AC unit runs  in reverse. They're efficient, and can work down to much colder temps than you'd expect. In this climate you will still need a furnace for the depths of winter, though.

For the moment, Natural Gas prices in MN are cheap enough that the heat pump may not be the best choice right now, but if gas prices go up very much, it will be cheaper.  Also, if your furnace is electric, the heat pump will almost certainly be cheaper to run than just electric heating.

Not easy to retrofit into an existing system, but if you're getting the furnace and AC swapped, that would likely make it relatively simple.

We talked to Bonfe and Standard Heating when looking 8 years ago for our HVAC.  Standard I don’t believe does plumbing but I could be wrong.

I think most modern MN HVAC systems will contain the heat pump…for our system it runs for 10-15 minutes and if it doesn’t get to temperature then the full system kicks in.

we will likely replace our water heater when our softener goes out. I live in Plymouth and the water hardness is insane so it really does a number on softeners and heaters.  I just pulled out the rod from the heater last fall and it was shot after only two years

Because we haven’t planned to spend enough money this year my wife and I are looking to buy a bigger SUV.  We have a 2015 Murano but with two kids and a dog we just don’t have a lot of cargo space, so we are looking at 3 row SUVs

We went to test drive a Honda Pilot last week and are looking to still test drive a Palisade, Atlas, and potentially a Telluride.  I’m amazed at how many dealerships don’t have at least one available for a test drive even with the inventory shortages.  We were able to drive a 2021 pilot but finding a Palisade or a Telluride to drive is looking to be really difficult because of how popular they are.  In talking to a couple dealers they said people are putting orders in without driving them at all, which surprises me given the cost of vehicles these days.

Due to a black ice incident (coming home from a Gopher game just to make it more painful) we needed a new SUV.  At the beginning of February we ordered a 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid.  Sight unseen, no test drive, looked up options online, but we’d driven a 4 yr old one as a rental. We gave 3 colors we’d accept.  It was finally delivered beginning of May!  Dealer had a stack of pre-orders on his desk.  They had NO inventory, no showroom cars, nothing.  Like you I choked on ordering a car unseen, but I don’t think anyone has extras, it doesn’t matter what brand.  It’s crazy.

We managed to find a Palisade to drive tomorrow at one of the local dealerships.  The Atlas actually won’t be hard to find from what I can tell, but Wisconsin probably has a better chance at winning next year’s Hockey National Title than we have of finding a Telluride.

The Kia dealer I reached out to a few weeks ago told me he had 250 orders on their desk and they weren’t taking any more orders because it was a 12 month wait.

It’s very possible my next car is a Telluride.  But I am in no hurry…..thankfully.

My neighbor texted me that Poquet Auto has 3 2021 Tellurides currently in stock.   They are all selling for $10k over the original sticker price

Wow phishing scammers are getting more and more sophisticated.  I can pretty much smell b.s. with this from a mile away (have never fallen for an email scam and know never click any link I've not personally requested) etc. but...

...got a call a few minutes ago claiming to be from my local bank here in PH. The first red flag was that the number while not blocked did not show the name of my bank.  Your bank should never call you, but I know if they did caller ID would show it.

She said they were calling to inform me a new card for my current account with added security features meant to prevent unauthorized scanning of the chip would be sent to my branch and I could pick it up with proof of ID. To verify this they said they were sending me a OTP to my phone number (red flag #2) and within seconds I got the SMS.

Where the sophistication comes in is that the SMS (unlike the phone #) appeared in my previous chat history tied to the verified customer service phone #, from which I will get SMS to verify I've made a payment to my credit card for instance.  Not sure if that makes sense but the SMS came in under an already existing SMS history that I know to be legit.

However, I know for a fact my bank would never ask me to repeat a OTP back to them so I said no thanks and hung up.  I called my bank and found out someone submitted an online application for a credit card in my name and associated with my EXISTING account. They closed the application but I have to recreate a new online login.

It's getting to the point where if I call my bank I'm going to have to wonder if these scammers can't hack the call and route to themselves.

When would a bank ever call about that anyway?  Credit card company, yes.  My banks have only ever sent anything by mail.
But to your point, yeah.  Scammers/thieves are for sure getting more sophisticated, one can’t be too careful.

My bank called me once about some questionable withdrawals. They asked if I had been travelling, and if so, where? I said the UP (named the cities), obviously the cities I went through in WI to get there. The bank's response? Not sh*ing you: "Um...no...ok...someone was trying to hack your account. You'll need to come in, show ID, and set up some new security features."

This was maybe 8-10 years ago, so maybe things are different now with banks. *shrug*

Today you get a call (usually automated) from fraud asking you to validate transactions.  If you say it wasn’t yours then they connect you with a person and they take care of it.

we had this happen on our primary credit card 3 days before leaving for Egypt.  Someone tried to charge $1500 at a clothing store and the bank flagged it, but didn’t lock the account until a couple hours later after contacting me.

another time a few years ago I forgot my credit card at a restaurant  in PA.  I realized it 20 minutes later and went to go get it.  The place didn’t have it and sure enough 15 minutes after that the bank called to validate it through an automated line.  They flagged it because someone made a $40 purchase at Target and i had never used our card at a Target Store in the last 15 years.

Has anyone recently bought a new vehicle?  If so how long did it take to get your new plates.  I’m two weeks past the expiration of my temporary plate.

I’m not too worried as I’m sure the police know that plates are taking a while.  I just don’t know how long they have been taking.

I have not purchased a new vehicle recently... But I my plates were 7 years old and were replaced in April. Vanity plates that arrived less than 2 weeks after I renewed. So it wasn't like they could grab any plates already printed off the shelf, it needed to be printed new.

It sounds like things have change in the last few months. I was actually surprised how fast I got them.

I bought a new vehicle about the same week as you did and had them the next week. They went to the dealership and they called me when they got them.

Interesting.  I did stop into the dealership last week as a was in the neighborhood.  They said they hadn’t received them and confirmed they would call me when they came in.  Guess I’ll be making a call to the State.

Wouldn't the dealer first insist on receiving the title from the previous owner before agreeing to your deal? And they pay for any ticket in the interim? Something seems fishy.

I'd personally recommend getting in touch with a lawyer, because that sounds wildly off, and potentially very problematic for you, if say, the previous owner calls the vehicle in as stolen.

I would go into the dealership and tell them that they are going to make your payments until you have the title and registration in your hand. How they react to that will give you a pretty good idea of how sketchy the situation is.

So when I talked to the dealership yesterday I talked to the person in the title department.  She said (I’m paraphrasing) that I am going to be brutally honest and tell you that I am brand new to the department and have been working hard to clean up the mess from the previous person.

The more I have thought about it the more it is bothering me so today I called the dealership to speak to the general manager.  I got a voicemail so I told them who I was an how I had a great initial sales experience but how upset I am that they sold me a car without having the title. I told them that even though the person I talked to on Friday said they would pay for any ticket I receive, that that is not acceptable as paying for it would still not remove it from my permanent record.

If I don’t hear anything back or don’t like their response, I am calling the Attorney General office first thing Monday.

p.s.  I did peruse the MN AG website and it states in several places that there is no cooling of period or grace period when purchasing a car unless it meets the Lemon Law requirements which mine doesn’t as there is nothing mechanically wrong with the car.

Check into the dealership policies. When I bought my car from the Forest Lake Chevrolet, they had a 200 miles driven/no questions asked return policy. I declined a test drive due to that; told them I'd drive it home (which was a nice mix of city/highway) and if I didn't like it, I'd be back in less than 2 hours. 😉

Anyone have any recommendations for carpet cleaning services? We’ve used Zerorez in the past, but they no longer will come out to our area of Dakota County. We have family coming for a two month stay and want to get the carpeting cleaned. Thanks!

How old is your carpet?  When we replaced our family room carpet the flooring store we bought it from suggested not using them or places like Stanley Steamer.

if it’s fairly new and you know what type it is you may want to call a flooring or carpet store and ask them for recommendations.

Has anyone bought a new car in the last 6-12 months?  We’re likely going to make a final decision on a car and I’m curious how you may have gone about deciding where to buy it.   I do a lot of my own research on cars and the salespeople are generally pretty surprised when they realize I know almost as much about their vehicles as they do, so the only thing I need them for is to help setup a test drive and order the vehicle given most of what we’re looking at is sold before it ever hits the lot.

In light of that I’ve got multiple dealerships from all over town bugging me about buying from them because I was reaching out to find a vehicle to drive.  If I am going to pay sticker then I’m thinking about seeing if I can get something “extra” out of them since I’m getting the exact car regardless of where I do it.

I’m curious if anyone has tried this and how it has worked.

What are you getting?

We finally decided to go ahead and order a Palisade.  We are going on Tuesday to place the order.

This could just as easily be in the "Stuck in my Craw" thread, but we had our new windows installed in early May and we had a few problems.   Among them were that two of the picture windows for our front bow window were broken...one during transit and a second while the installer was trying to put them in.

Yesterday an installer came back to install the 2 windows and a service tech came to replace the broken glass packs.   Sure enough the service tech broke the glass on one of the two so now they are ordering a 3rd glass pack.   The worst though is that neither crew knew that the original installers didn't cap the windows so you see a mess of insulation around the windows from the street, even though the company had multiple pictures of it and I left a couple messages over the last 8 weeks about getting it resolved, temporarily if necessary.

The service folks called me to tell me the new glass pack is on the way, but they claim they can't cap the windows until it is done even though they do all the replacement work from the inside.   We'll see if they the project person calls me back because I told them I was tired of the front of my house looking like a trailer park after a tornado went through it, but I'm pretty pissed off at all the "sorries" at this point.

The only good thing is that they haven't dared ask for the final 50% of the payment after I refused to sign off after the initial install.

This would be especially true if a mother in law is involved

My wife and I are looking into getting a hot tub / spa. Do any of you guys have any recommendations on brands to get or avoid? Since we live out state, dealers in the Cities won't be needed.  We don't have a family, so we are looking at a smaller one ( 3-4 people ) and nothing too fancy.  Any info would be great. Thanks in advance.

Brands no.

But with the State Fair coming up a lot of dealers that exhibit there have specials running and they could service greater MN, too.

Cottage Cheese Chuggers a term that may be found in the urban dictionary.

Anyone know of a good and reasonable tree trimmer in the south metro.  My tree in the backyard has some broken branches that need to be cut. My brother-in-law has one of those pole saws. Though it might not be long enough. In the past I would just stand on top of a ladder or climb up in a tree with a chainsaw and trim away. Now that I have a family, the things I use to do, I think twice of doing... LoL.

My wife and I use Arbor Barber - he knows what he's doing, and his prices are very reasonable/competitive.
