Earlier this year I guessed maybe 22 would enter the portal because it appeared that he and tBob were not on the same page. But others pointed out, his family loves tBob and he seemed to turn the corner the 2nd half. That then leaves 11, 18, & 21. 18 isn't a Motzko recruit, but his dad has ties to the U. Both 11 and 21 were Motzko recruits, and maybe 21 would want to go back to Az to play. Don't we all love speculation?

I think 21

He really was borderline Gopher material after the injury.

Best case: Replaced by Cruikshank

Most likely case: Replaced by fellow Arizonian the older Knies

I love rumors... so.. When Bucci incorrectly said Cruikshank was going to BC, and Cruikshank replied that nothing is set yet, a current Gopher liked his response... It may be that a player is friends with him or that player knows something or it is probably nothing.. One can wish...

I see two Gophers liked it, both of whom are transfering out.

Was it Lacombe? I think his dad advises Cruikshank. A handful of schools are in the mix for him, I think we are one. His shot would be a nice addition.

His speed would be the most welcomed addition for sure. Also a two year captain at an NCHC school. Knies was a captain at Miami.

Then free agency is now officially a part of building championship caliber teams. The rich will get richer, and thankfully we're one of the schools that will net out positive.

The extra year to play applies for anyone enrolled Fall 2020, right?

The Gophers will be in the free agency market for defensemen next summer.

Seems weird to me that the Gophers would be interested in any forwards... why not just keep McManus?

I would think this process is in flux as well. If the Gophers think they can move in a young player who can perform at or close to a one-year guy like McManus, I'd say bring him in. McManus would help this team, no doubt, but he's nowhere near the level of a Pitlick, for example. The team is losing experience more than skill.

You think Pitlick is going to put up more points next year than McManus would have? I doubt that.

I was referring to Rem. Losing McManus is not on the same scale as losing a player like Rem. McManus is more replaceable.

I don't know how they think they're going to be able to do that. There are so many people who need to have access to it that its hard to keep the ones out that don't. I don't see the point of reforming it and don't know how they would. If they want to keep the Media from posting it, then they should make it public for themselves to get the credit.

It will be interesting how it will shake out. I don't think MN use the portal as heavily as teams that don't have a strong recruiting pipeline. I could see the Gophers adding a player or 2 every year at most. For Mn, goalie may be the most logical position to use the portal. The fear of pushing recruits back and losing them may be more powerful than the temptation to grab a portal player. Teams that are 2nd tier teams may benefit the most, and will help them close the gap. The clear losers will be lower tier teams that will lose their best players after taking a chance on them.

Yep. If a guy blossoms at Huntsville, he's apt to move on to a higher profile team.

Yes. Because we will get the good players. I disagree that the Gophers won't use it heavily. If it's the best strategy to win titles it needs to be used, even if that means delaying some recruits and ultimately cutting ties with them.

As of right now... Minnesota is VERY THIN on defense recruits. They had 10 D-Men on the roster this year. Denman is the only one that didn't play. As of right this moment, they have 8 on the roster. I can see them easily picking up a D-Man out of the portal this summer to fill some spots.

Next years roster as it looks right now.

https://gopherpucklive.com/roster/

Currently only 3 D-Men committed to be Gophers right now. None for this fall.

If they don't pick up any D this summer they're going to need multiple next summer. We'll lose 5 of our 8 D, and there aren't many uncommitted D out there.

I'm just wondering how many smokey, backroom deals are going to be made out there with some of the coaches who like to push the rules to the limit. I can see somewhere a coach tells a player that he doesn't have room for him this year, but if you go play for team x for a year or two we "might" have an opening in the future. I can see some potential landmines and some bitter feelings between coaches who try to do it the right way and those who push the envelope. Most likely is that the coaches will use players as recruiters to put out feelers to see if there is any interest.

I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.

Not a lot of great D options in portal. LIttle crazy at forward you have multiple guys that wore letters, led team in scoring, and an all NCHC caliber player. Then on D you have guys like Griffin Mendel. Might have to try to flip a guy that's gets pushed to USHL next year. Maybe Henry Nelson if Notre Dame doesn't bring him in??

I agree you have to use the portal, but can't overuse it. Both teams that played in championship game had contributions from transfers. Recruting from portal has to be interesting. For Juniors and HS you can talk to players coaches to get insight....don't think many college coaches will be eager to provide anyting other than smoke signals.
