UST is trying to seek a waiver to be eligible for postseason play sooner than 5 years, but at this point they haven’t had any success. Similar to the waiver they were given to go straight to D1 from D3. They were allowed to skip the typical stop at D2 due to them being voted out of the MIAC. I know for a fact it has been a difficult selling point amongst recruits for the basketball team.

Is the not having to sit out a year going to go away after covid or will this be a permanent thing? This feels like free agency with all the trading around of players.
Out of curiosity what is the rationale for the long wait to be eligible for postseason play?
tDon on Beyond the Pond said it's so teams build the right way. Don't sign a bunch of 25 year old free agents trying to win a Natty in Year 1.
DYLAN MILLS Niagara University
I remember playing open hockey with/against him a few years ago. Nice set of hands, I think he was smaller than 6'3 back then though lol.

That guy is on his 3rd college team and will turn 25 next season. Seems weird that UND would be interested in someone who has bounced around so much.
He's pretty good at stopping the puck from going into the net, so

That and, according to the NCAA, it's to ensure all teams moving up get into compliance with D1 regulations.
The Whioux picks up another player. He is a defenseman with 12 points in 70 games. Looks like a depth guy.

Not to rip on the kid personally, but the words "further my education at UND" have been uttered by approximately no one transferring from RPI. Especially if he was in one of the many engineering programs they have there.

Mav fans were really high on this kid before he got to town, he just never looked like what was said about him in Canada. He has size but that's about it, terrible skater IMO and doesn't have a good shot...it's heavy but not accurate. I foresee him moving on from college, just a hunch.

Reload instead of rebuild
I'm just shocked that they didn't have the fire power lined up to step right in. Teams like Mn, UND, MI, Bc etc that always have high end talent that could leave early should always be prepared. I would much rather have a majority of recruits come in and maybe add a player a year instead of bringing in 5 transfers and a couple of recruits. I guess we will see which path will work next year.

I hope Motzko looks at Kohen Olishefski. Could use another older, experienced player up front with so many freshman coming in. He has some size and speed. Was captain for Denver and played in frozen 4.
Saw Cameron Wright mentioned. Haven’t seen a lot of him but I think he could struggle keeping up with pace against better teams. Has a big shot.
Phil Knies seems most likely if we go to portal.
I wonder how the transfer portal will benefit a new team like St. Thomas. Mn could have 6 teams in the ncaa tourney next year
Interesting story about Saint Thomas and the potential use of the transfer portal to help fill their roster.

Remember, they aren’t eligible for tourney play for 5 years.
This portal year is crazy. I am torn on how I feel about it. I feel like some team is going to load up and possiblly transfer their way to the Frozen Four. On the other hand players should get to do what it takes to advance themselves both academically and in hockey.
It will be an interesting year next year. I'm hoping the transfer plan backfires on a couple programs.

I'm not torn. I dont like it. Teams who are wont to assemble a mature team are in heaven with the option to snatch up 25 year olds who are proven at this level. There will be teams that are much older next year with all these 5th year players. I'm not even persuaded that the portal is necessary.
Seems like the day is coming when you can build a team of transfers. It'll be like the Dodgers and Yankees. Screw the farm system (or recruiting) and load up on free agents.
This year is unusual - it won't be like this forever.
I’ve got no problem with this unique situation for next year, the bonus year of eligibility & not having to sit out a year. Laffer got another year, McMannis gets to play a bonus year at UNO, Max Johnson gets a bonus year at WI, where his Dad played football, and who knows, a tUMD senior or two may stay for a bonus year too :biggrin2:
Problem is that everyone who played this year gets an extra year of eligibility. So you have freshman this year who will somewhat be incoming freshman in October if they want to be. So it may not be here forever but it is for 4 years.

They have a bunch of drafted or about to be drafted guys lined up. This gets them an extra year and they will come in flying.
As a fan, I would much rather see Pitlick, Huglen, Broz, Knies, and Lucius come in rather than 3 transfers and only 2 of those guys in fear of losing one of them if they are pushed back. I'm ok bringing in a depth guy to round out the roster, or the goalie position and I'm guessing the Gophers will lose 4th liners in the portal every year. It will be interesting how this all plays out. Will some teams recruits leave because they are pushed back and will those teams who actively use the portal get a bad rap amongst recruits and will the recruits steer clear of those teams? I realize a team like UND had a huge SR class, plus a bunch of early signings, so maybe this is a weird year for them as well, but adding 5 or 6 portal guys seems excessive. I could see AZ St using the portal as a recruiting tool instead of the traditional route.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
UND is clearly in a position where their top recruits are willing to wait an extra year. So the Gophers would hopefully get to the same point. With the way it shook out it just isn't going to be a heavy transfer year for the Gophers, though.

McManus would definitely have helped the team as a 5th year guy. His departure tells you where the gophers are at in this process.
Is it permanent that kids don’t have to wait a year to transfer or will that be reinstituted post covid?

The COVID no-sit rule is essentially allowed, but the NCAA is in the midst of finalizing a permanent one-time, no sit rule for a transfer. That is expected to be released later this summer.
I agree. It’s too easy now and it undermines the commitments that were made. I can understand there are extenuating circumstances, but free agency isn’t how college sports should be run.
