He looked like the best goalie in the portal stats wise. I was hoping the Gophers were going to bring him in. Instead they will have to face him 4+ times each season.

Aside from potentially losing Airey, I am thinking Bob doesn't want to be in the mode of a few teams where they are depending on always bringing in a transfer goalie.
Feel bad for so many of these mid level programs that recruit kids that the "blueblood programs" ignored. Then watched them be snatched away from the portal.
You think basketball, football and even hockey is bad. Wrestling is by far the worse of college sports.100% spot on. I feel for a Bemidji, who finally gets Pohlkamp and he bolts after 1 year to Denver. These smaller schools are just feeder systems for the blue bloods, and I say this a a fan of a blue blood school. The system needs tweaking for sure.
Or the Portal can go away. Exceptions can be made Coaches going to a new team things like that
Bring back the sit out a year and a lot of this insanity would be stopped. Could make exceptions for coaches leaving.
First of all they can't...they would run afoul of the Courts.
Second of all, why should players have to sit out a year when coaches don't have to? Screw that noise coaches sign contracts and leave at a moments notice...until that is rectified the players should have the same rights.
The only real solution then is a collective bargaining agreement and contracts like a pro league. Salary cap would be nice too.
Maybe I missed it but Stramel to MSU

He would be an ok backup and the fact the head of Bruce from Duluth would probably explode would be worth it.

I like Airey but I'm not sure why Stejskal would see himself as a clear backup to a guy who's played two college games. Let them split time to start the year and see who wins the job.
Well Carl Fish is in the portal -- always tough when program guys can't have a fifth year and might want to take advantage of another year in college. I don't think anyone expected him back, but best of luck to him with what he decides to do next. Sometimes I think big skaters like Fish could be effective ECHL/AHL players because of their size and having to hold back in college and then maybe you get lucky with a role and a coach somewhere.
Sucks to see him go but not unexpected. Total backlog of defensemen in the program right now. Fully expecting Koster back at this point.
I think the writing was on the wall with Carl's status for next year. At the very least he would have been knocked down to 7th d man and maybe even #8. Like Pino and Strobel, it would be hard to be in the lineup and then back to a reserve role. Hope he can catch on with a team so he can get some playing time. Best of luck Carl. Your fan section in the pep band will miss you for sure.

Our favorite portal name, Gunnarwolfe Fontaine to Ohio St. Good news is that we get to hear his name at least 4 times next season.

Does Koster even crack the Top 6??? Will he want to be the 3rd D pairing or even they 7th D?

5th year Koster > freshman Whipple so yeah.
Also the difference between 1st and 3rd pair is simply in name, especially for a team that rolls all 6/7 guys and doesn’t lean on one pair too much like other teams.

I would rather take my bumps with Whipple over Koster knowing that Whipple will be here for a bit. I said the same with with Rud and Bagley over Fish this year.

On a team that will be a potential contender, having a stable defensive group could be huge, especially with a rookie goalie. Saying Koster playing would be similar to playing Fish is not really fair, given Koster is far better than Fish. A healthy Koster has shown he can be a high impact defenseman on both ends of the ice and would be a great mentor for the younger guys to play with. Whipple is 18 right now so stepping right in on a team who rolls their D pairs could be a big ask. Gives him time to put on weight and get used to the speed.
Will be one of the nice things about this team if you bring back Koster in that there's not a "hole" on defense like there was this year where you held your breath when Fish was on the ice, which we saw kill us in the postseason to the tune of 3 of the BU goals.

This take doesn't quite make sense to me. Next year is shaping up to be another "peak" kind of year and Koster is a much better player than Whipple right now. Hold on to the guy who will help you win as many as possible. Whipple could be 7D if they decide to go that route--he can develop and learn from the vets while avoiding critical situations. If Koster decides to leave he can move into the top 6, but should 100% be Koster's decision imo.

Whos to say they won’t take their bumps with Whipple next year? You can play 7 D in college hockey and that’s what I anticipate them doing next season. They didn’t last year because there was a decent drop off from Fish to Begley/Rud.
Bob always gives the whole roster playing time in the first half of the year. If Whipple comes in, he'll get a shot then. If he proves himself over the course of that time, then he'll continue to be in down the stretch. If not, it would be like Rud and Begley this year who didn't see much if any ice time over the 2nd half.
Unless there's surprise departures, I'm not too worried about the D next season. We saw good strides from Thomas, Chesley and Rinzel. I just love Mitts' game too, solid solid player. We may never be as good as having Faber, Lacombe and Johnson anchoring the line, but that was a stupid good luxury to have and not a common occurrence.
My biggest concern for next year is honestly the forwards. Snuggy has to learn to do more than shoot the puck. It seemed that the more he got frustrated, the more he was just waiting for guys to feed it to him to force shots. He needs to get some more of Knies' habits into his game. Go in the corner and get the puck yourself. Become a complete player, not a 1 trick pony. Pitlick disappears all the time. Moore needs to progress and everyone has to be better in the faceoff dot. We're losing the only guy who was above or at 50% I think.
All of that can definitely happen and I wouldn't be surprised if it did, but it's just where I see the most progression needed out of the roster. D should be pretty solid.
There is a common logic among fans that if a player coming in is more talented than a player leaving, it's a net win for the team. However, age and experience are big factors in college hockey, not to mention how long a player hangs around. 5th-year players like Nelson and Brodzinski may be replaced with better raw talent, but will they be better players? Worse, the higher the pedigree, the more likely they'll move on after one or 2 seasons - just as they get their training wheels off. That kind of player turnover can hurt a team.
Maybe this is why mature teams who have played together longer show up for the tournament. Last year, Minnesota had the most talented team in a generation but lost to a hardscrabble team with little NHL talent. BC beat them this year but only because they finished on a single late shot that made the difference. Minnesota (Snuggy), on the other hand, missed the net.
This is what makes the portal so influential. Teams like Wisconsin, North Dakota, and Michigan State went shopping for experience in the offseason, going from the middle of the pack to the top of the conference in one year. It's easy to see why a team would go after a player like Wood with the idea of keeping him for one or 2 seasons instead of going all in on an 18-year-old whose mother still does his laundry.
It's nice to see that the tournament this year has bucked the trend of boring, defensive hockey. Unfortunately, it's become the exception to the rule. Should be some really good games.
Too bad the Gophers missed out on Blake Biondi. Hate to see Fish and Strobel go, would have made great backups in case of injury. But I'm happy for them and hope they find more playing time.

Wow, starting at MN then to a red team and now ASU.
With this ongoing steep decline in programs by this time next year he'll be transferring to St. Olaf.

Michigan picks up a defenseman who played at Arizona St and BC before that.

Classic Michigan guy. Great puck skills. Good offensively but isn’t great on the defensive side of the puck.

Although it was due to a very different circumstance.
That idea worked out well for the Stanford’s. 😉

I’m wondering if a player can transfer or has during the season? If so then at what point, even if no does it make sense to leave a roster spot open for a potential transfer so it doesn’t screw a player who was recruited and has intentions on being on the team or is and then gets bumped out.

Only graduate students can enter at any time. All others have a window between March 31st and May 14th.
I think players that had aid reduced or had a coaching change can move outside of that window as well, or am I misremembering?
I have update the Transfer Portal page. It is now using a new plugin that pulls the data from Google Sheets better than the other plugin. It brings in ALL of the data and allows me to format it so much better. So all of the fields are there and I have also linked the player names to the Elite Prospects profile as well.

I would have thought Charlie Strobel would have transferred by now. I wonder if he doesn't transfer if he can stay on the Gophers. Maybe he wants to play for only certain teams, and the right fit.
