I think a big part of it is that Hastings' system is fairly restrictive and structured. If guys aren't on board with doing what they're supposed to do out there, then they don't play.

As Hastings showed in Mankato, the system can work with the right players. But that system also seemed to be a fantastic fit for a Mankato type of program where the very high end young talents are unlikely to go.

Wisconsin can attract the high end young kids that Mankato can't... but are those kinds of recruits going to want to play in a system that doesn't encourage creativity, etc.?

This is the same dilemma that eventually sunk Mike Eaves at Wisconsin. Top recruits didn't want to play in his system and the fans there grew disenchanted over time because those top recruits kept going to other places (and the results followed). We'll see how it works out for Hastings but it could be a bit of déjà vu.

I said this when they hired him, and he was one of the coaches I was alluding to that will struggle with the portal in general because his system is not built to showcase the best of the best.  Honestly he would fit more at a school like Michigan State because they are not a destination school for 5 star recruits and are used to the up and down nature that he is likely to bring.  They have almost always been a system school.

He will get grace at Sconnie because he will be good for a bit and they have been trash more often than not, but what you are seeing now with his top guys leaving is going to be a trend unless he recruits more like he did at Mankato.  Problem is Wisconsin is not Mankato, they expect to be a school the best flock too.  Mankato, while a very solid program, rarely competes with Big Ten schools for players and likely won't do much better in the modern version of college sports.  Wisconsin fans will demand top end talent...unless his system wins titles.  They have turned on legends they will definitely turn on him.

I get why he took the job, but I think in 5 years he will regret it.  If I was a Sconnie alum I would not be super pumped they hired him seeing as how the college landscape is changing.

Then Hastings would be better off not recruiting top end players. Just stick to the 23 year old Freshman that has always worked for him.

If he does that the alumni will throw a fit.  Not to mention Michigan and Minnesota will eat their lunch most years.

@slap-shot sandy probably has to toe the line publicly to avoid poking programs and coaches directly he has relationships with. What sandelin can do is give more tidbits “off camera” to guide Ciskie. The random player Ciskie pointed out in Twitter could easily be Scott saying “this is an example put this in your article.” I doubt ciskie has time to track all these transfers but sandelin would know by his coaches work on all of them.

I do think you have to read between the lines on this stuff. Bruce can be a mouthpiece for sandy and knows his role. And Scott needs to be careful in what he says in a quote. So they help eachother.

I get all that, but since Minnesota has barely sniffed the portal I don't see a coach being that caustic towards the U (even covertly) because of 1 rumor in a tweet.

Sorry but that is not nearly the same thing.  Those were non-con these will be games of value.  This will be likely 4 times a year and they wont be facing off against "Big Brother".  Not to mention the pressure at Mankato is nowhere near the pressure to win at Sconnie.

Also we are better top to bottom than done or the teams he beat.

Pohlkamp is pretty easily the biggest portal add so far; I'm a big fan of his game. One of those scenarios of the rich getting richer but yeah, at least it wasn't to UND if those were truly the final two schools he was considering. Anyone else think it is a bit odd that Denver added him when their season is still alive? I'm just thinking some of the current defenseman might now be questioning their spot on the team next season which I wouldn't want happening before a Frozen Four semifinal game.

Regarding that Northern Michigan line chart image that was posted, one of the names I was hoping to see in the portal is Grant  Slukynsky as I'd love for Bob to somehow flip his brother Hampton's commitment to us. (Note: I think it would be highly unlikely for Bob to push for this with Potulny at the helm). With Bartoszkiewicz's struggles this season, I think a 2nd goaltender is our biggest question mark going into next season as we truly don't know what we have in Airey yet, so adding one of the current top goaltenders in the USHL would be huge for us.

the buiums and behrens may all be gone from Denver next year. There’s plenty of room

Maybe. As talented as Zeev is I still don't foresee him being a one-and-done even if he goes top 10 in the draft. Behrens and Shai are likely gone and then the other 6 current D are all either freshman or sophomores, with one incoming D who signed his NLI in Finn McLaughlin.

So, probably a non-issue, I'd just want that announcement to be held off until post the FF if I were the coach.

Curious how this plays out at Wisconsin with Hastings. He can obviously coach, even if you loathe his style. Wisconsin has a high ceiling; we will see if he hits it.

How long before we see a second Portal season during the Christmas break? That way the players wouldn't have to commit to a full year.

Is he a cheap enough player? First to sconnie and then Arizona, that's quite a slide.

Well... He needs a place to live, he certainly will not live with his teammates. A private driver to take him from school back to his private family home. Of maybe even his own place?

Feel bad for so many of these mid level programs that recruit kids that the "blueblood programs" ignored. Then watched them be snatched away from the portal.
You think basketball, football and even hockey is bad. Wrestling is by far the worse of college sports.

100% spot on. I feel for a Bemidji, who finally gets Pohlkamp and he bolts after 1 year to Denver. These smaller schools are just feeder systems for the blue bloods, and I say this a a fan of a blue blood school. The system needs tweaking for sure.

Bring back the sit out a year and a lot of this insanity would be stopped.  Could make exceptions for coaches leaving.

Happens against us (the Gophers) in football and basketball. Need to take advantage in hockey.

Football has been interesting as I think we've gained some but also lost some.  I would say 2 of the 3 years the football team gained but last year we were definitely hurt.  I think for next year we had a net gain, with Brosmer being a key piece.

This is from Todd's story about the transfers.  Blue collar is one way of putting it.

The personnel changes makes it appear that the Badgers forward corps is turning more blue-collar for Hastings' second season.

Or the Portal can go away.  Exceptions can be made   Coaches going to a new team things like that

Bring back the sit out a year and a lot of this insanity would be stopped.  Could make exceptions for coaches leaving.

I like the portal because I think it helps keep more talent in college hockey as opposed to Canada or the NHL/AHL. Can’t imagine Matthew Wood would sit out a year and would most likely just go Major Junior. No way the Wild are letting Stramel go back to Wisconsin so he’d probably end up going Major Junior or just sign but he’s not ready for the AHL obviously either. Not too fond of Cruz Lucius but he’s a good player and I’d rather have him in college hockey than the AHL. I like the concept of kids sticking with their commitments and having to sit out a year but, ultimately, I just think it pushes the high end players out which just leaves even less talent for the smaller schools anyways. I also don’t think some of these smaller schools mind being feeder systems to the blue bloods if it means not getting these players at all. Does Pohlkamp even end up in Bemidji in the first place if he thought he was stuck there? I personally don’t think so. At least they got him for a year. More players signing or bolting is also less kids with degrees, a guy like Stramel might need his. Also, I think it’s kind of funny watching North Dakota turn over their entire team every year.

First of all they can't...they would run afoul of the Courts.

Second of all, why should players have to sit out a year when coaches don't have to?  Screw that noise coaches sign contracts and leave at a moments notice...until that is rectified the players should have the same rights.
