Guentzel is 6th all time in playoff goals per game for players with 50+ games. Mario, Bossy, Rocket Richard, Neely, Mackinnon, Guentzel.
That is some elite company. Good for him.
Oettinger ended up with the best playoff save % for a goalie playing 400+ minutes since saves started being tracked.
Really good article about Ryan Lindgren and his brothers. Russo talked to Skjei for the story as well. Ryan bought a house in Edina and his roommates are Sheehy, Rossini, and Sadek.

I really want to know what's the reason for this fight. I feel like there's got to be some good backstory to cause this.
It was 12-3 or something like that and Blueger had 7 points and was talking shit
What kind of doosh talks s**t during this type of event?
Maverick fans in the comment section of the tweets about that fight are going on and on about how a Maverick is apparently once again beating up a Gopher. Please let us just clobber them in October.
My Maverick friends are definitely as confident as the last couple seasons without Hobey McKay. That said they are still talking about how well they start their seasons and the Gophers will fall victim to that in October. I want a sweep that weekend leaving Mav fans to exiting early at both games especially here in Mankato.

Wheeler no longer the captain in Winnipeg. Dustin Brown was the last player that comes to mind that this happened to.

Phil Kessel will be breaking the NHL Iron Man streak tonight with 990 consecutive games:
Most impressive streak?!?!?
NBA: AC Green - 1,192
MLB: Cal Ripkin - 2,632
NFL: Jeff Feagles - 352
NHL: Phil Kessel - 990 (Tonight)
Keep your stick on the ice...
I'd probably give the edge to Ripken, but Hockey is such a physical and dangerous sport, Kessel would be a very close second.
After that, a gap and then not sure, NBA? Or the punter?
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
Some more stats...
NHL:
- Phil Kessel - 990 (Tonight)
- 2nd: Keith Yandle - 989
- Active: Brent Burns - 685

- 2nd: Lou Gehrig - 2,130
- Active: Matt Olson - 246
NBA:

Without trying to sound like too much of a homer, if you think about the type of equipment NFL players wore 50 years ago coupled with the lack of advancement in the science of conditioning etc., that Marshall streak is pretty damn impressive. Never mind the position he played vs. a K.

Agreed. Marshall, and even Crosby, is way more impressive than a Punter getting 352 games in. (my mind blanked that he's the kicker)
Marshall likely delivered and/or received more solid hits in every game he played than Feagles and Crosby have taken in their combined careers.

Kessel also gets his 400th goal.

Only 9% of the current players in the NHL were playing in the NHL when Kessel's streak started.

Rem Pitlick has been placed on waivers by the Habs. If he clears waivers, he will be assigned to their minor league team. He just seems to be one of those guys who is just missing an element to his game.

The AHL skills competition is currently on the NHL Network. Sammy Walker is participating. Lettieri ( injured ) and Novak ( called up to Preds ) were also supposed to be there. The game will be on NHL network tomorrow night at 6pm. The game features a bunch of former college players people would recognize.

So why didn’t we land Jaxson Stauber? Too much pressure? I guess we had Laffer at the time…
Just been forever since we produced an NHL goalie. And no I’m not counting LaFontaine’s cup of coffee.
He wasn't exactly a highly recruited goalie.
He was well behind Jared Moe at Holy Family. He left early to play for Sioux Falls, and only played 20~ish games each of his 3 seasons there. He went to Mankato State and only played in one game, so he went back to Juniors that season (still only playing in about 20 games). But they had Dryden McKay and he probably knew he wasn't going to get much played time until McKay left. He transferred to Providence and played more games, and posted better stats, but wasn't getting the attention that guys like Thatcher Demko were getting prior either.
Some goalies (just like players) are late bloomers. Could be a Charlie Lindgren situation where he lights it up for a handful of games, but never becomes a starter.
I hope he makes it, but it isn't like the Gophers necessarily "missed" on him.
There just aren't that many NCAA goalies, let alone American/Minnesotan, that make it to and stay in the NHL. Dryden McKay, dominant NCAA goalie, still hasn't seen an NHL game and has only played 2 games in the AHL. He is 25. (Jesper Wallstedt is 20)
Thatcher Demko was a "Sure thing" goalie prospect. Last year was his first good year, and first as a starter. This year he has been below replacement level and has been injured. He is also playing on a garbage team, which doesn't help.
Spencer Knight was a "Sure thing" in his draft as well. He lis playing like a backup goalie (is only 22, and probably needed more AHL time)
Goalies are weird...
Agree on all of that. Just weird to see a Stauber between the pipes in the NHL that wasn’t a Gopher.

Novak with a goal and an assist 8 minutes into todays game in Nashville. Now has 15 goals and 21 assists in 44 games this year. He has 25 points in his last 23 games. Didn't see that coming.
Edit -- add another assist, so he has 3 points so far today.

Fun to see Novak tearing it up in smashville. Good for him
Honestly could not have seen this coming in a million years. Not with how his injury ridden career went at the U. Had Europe written all over him. So happy for the kid. A Don guy!
He always had elite vision. However I never thought of him as a great skater, so I am very impressed to see him doing this in the NHL. Good for him
A couple of other former Gophers are having good years--
Casey Mittelstadt has career high with 49 points this year and has stayed healthy by playing in all of the games this year.
Brady Skjei has a career high 17 goals this year.

That's impressive, considering he scored 8 goals in his entire Gopher career.
