Saw Tyler Nanne in a Great Clips commercial during the wild game. Is that news worth posting? I don’t know but I’m doing it anyway.

From a recent article “ Don Granato’s effect on the Sabres’ game plan was obvious. His impact on the players was even more substantial.
“A lot of guys, including myself, owe Donny quite a bit,” center Casey Mittelstadt said.
They have time to pay Granato back. He’s not going anywhere.
After a seven-week coaching search that included candidates from around the globe, Buffalo general manager Kevyn Adams has picked the guy who held the interim title. Granato became the organization’s 20th coach Tuesday, three months after stepping in for fired bench boss Ralph Krueger.”

I was very confused reading this and had to look it up. Bratislava is, of course, in Slovakia, but they play in a league based in Austria.

That's a very sturdy temporary fence. Normally those things tip over if a butterfly flaps its wings too close to them. I love watching those celebrity/allstar games for stuff like that. Especially because you can tell which athletes played multiple sports, and which athletes did not. It's also fun to see the greatest athletes in the world not know how to hit a softball. DK Metcalf struck out swinging twice in the MLB Celebrity All Star softball game this season ?
That photo looks like a SNL skit. Nobody would look at that and think he is a world class athlete.

Would have been nice for the Gophers to benefit from this kid for another year or two. He obviously needed the development, as I and many others, believed.
I think it was a good decision for Mittlestadt to leave and max out on the signing bonus and now get $7.5 million. I think he likely developed more playing more pro hockey rather than forty college games.

Agree to disagree. He was clearly not fully prepared his first couple years in the league.

Top 10 NHL draft picks usually sign after one year of college hockey like Casey did. In 20/20 hindsight, it was a mistake, he needed another year or two with the Gophers & it’s cost him financially relative to the contracts he’s signed since his initial entry level deal. Still, he’s entering his 4th year of pro hockey now & this 3 year deal is a definitely a “prove it” contract. So it’s up to Casey now to prove he’s a regular shift NHL player, the iron is hot again for Casey with Granato as his coach…and he needs to take advantage of this opportunity ☝️
Is there a more polarizing former Gopher in the pros as CM? Not a ton of middle of the road on him. Okposo was that guy by the way he left, but I think time has healed those wounds. Erik Johnson is in the running by the way he plays and who he plays for, but that is about it.

Ranta makes the 23 man roster of a Stanley Cup favorite Avs.
THAT is why you stay three years if you are not dominating like Caufield/Holloway/Pinto/Boldy. The extra year made a huge difference for him.
Good for Ranta. I’ve always said that if they want you it might be your only chance so you gotta take it. Anything could happen, injury is a big one but the whole time you are trying to make it to the Pro’s it’s all about how can you do it. It hardly ever pays off to stay and the risks are high of losing your shot. You have to go when your value is high. In Rantas case his value went way up. For Casey he was already rated highly and there wasn’t a benefit to stay. Even if another year playing D1 would help, where is the better talent to train with? It’s a no brainer.

Anyone with eyes could see Mittelstadt should not have gone after one year.
My eyes work fine and his were very sharp with all the zeros after the dollar sign. In the end it’s all about the $. We will never agree and I’m not trying to change your mind.

Ranta needed new scenery anyway. I thought he was a bit like Blake Wheeler in that they were both excellent skaters with good size, but they weren't ideally suited to the college game.
Sometimes, when you're ahead of your peers, you try to do too much and get away from playing in the system. The NHL was a better system for both those guys by the time they left.
I'm not surprised by Ranta's success.

The walls inside Tom Reid's Hockey City Pub in downtown St. Paul are adorned with memorabilia from the owner's hockey career. Tucked around the corner of the main dining area hangs a picture capturing a monumental upset in sports history.
It happened 50 years ago today — Oct. 14, 1971.
Tom Reid scored on a penalty shot against Hall of Fame goalie Ken Dryden.
"They should make it a national holiday," said Lou Nanne, Reid's North Stars teammate that night.

He's another kid who needed to move on from the college game.
He was way too much of a cream puff here and needed the coaching, added games and hard knocks to move up.
Saw Sampo play in person last night for the Avalanche.......didn't get many minutes as the big guys played all the time trying to tie the game.
He does not look out of place. Such a big leap to play in the show compared to NCAA hockey but he seems to be doing it.

It felt like it was time for him to move on from the college game. Some of the bad habits he had in college I thought were a consequence of his higher skill level. He also picked up his physical play during his junior year and started using his body.
Playing in the NHL for NHL coaches in an NHL system is what he needed. Unlike CM's decision to leave, Ranta hit it just right.
