Serendipitously ran across this one in early AM browsing Leddy scores twice

Not knowing what to do, they do what they know . . .
Knowing what to do, they sometime don't do it . . .
The 26th year of the Gopher Men's Hockey Profile got to be too much for this ol' codger to handle . . . what with all of the possible activity on the transfer portal . . . . So, I'm closing it down at the 25th year . . .

Most productive Minnesotans debuting in the last 30 years:

1. Boeser (.83 PPG) - Young and likely to go up

2. Wheeler (.81 PPG) - Will be interesting to see which way it goes the next few years

T3. Guentzel (.78 PPG) - Young and likely to go up

T3. Parise (.78 PPG) - Likely going downwards

5. Oshie (.71 PPG) - Similar to Wheeler. Could go either way

Mittelstadt is our best hope to pick up the Gopher slack from Wheeler/Kessel/Vanek getting up there in age. Hopefully by next year he can produce at these levels. Other than him we'll see how Walker and Brink pan out in terms of NHL potential.

Casey Mittelstadt scratched for 2nd time in 3 games. There are rumblings out of Buffalo that he may be sent to the AHL if things don't change soon. He has 2 points in his last 21 games.

It's tough because the Gophers need an offensive star representing in the NHL to replace aging Kessel and Wheeler and he was supposed to be it.

He's not a physical, tough player. In that way he reminds me of Jordan Schroeder, another former Gopher who played a little soft for the NHL. Unless you have the skill set of a guy like Johnny Gaudreau, if you're an undersized player it's a freaking meat grinder of a league.

I don’t think JS is a fair comparison, he’s 5’9” (generously) while CM is 6’1” & 200lbs. CM has a way superior skill set compared to JS too. CM is struggling in his 2nd full year in the NHL. It happens. But keep in mind, CM is exactly the same age as Gophers freshman Ben Meyers ☝️

I was just thinking what the Gophers team would look like if Casey was still on campus. They'd probably be scoring another goal a game and have had a good chance to win those 13 games that they were tied in the third or leading in the third.

With him finally hitting his stride the last two series of his freshman year, he would have had a good soph season and left last summer anyways.

CM never liked to play defense. Watching him in high school he floated around waiting for his team to gain possession. Great offensive skillset but not at the NHL level evidently.

What would it look like if we still had Lindgren, Pitlick, and Robson? They would have all been seniors this year had they stayed right?

BTW I do think Pitlick was ready to move on to being a professional. He had a pretty nice year as a junior and Nashville is doing the right thing by playing him in the AHL as well. I think they would have done that with him even if he had stayed for another year at Minnesota. Just seems like his game, physical and mental makeup were ready for a next step.

Lindgren... as soon as he was traded to the NYR he was excited at the chance to prove himself and find a spot in their lineup. Lindgren gave up the chance to grow his offensive game a bit more as he was just getting some chances on the pp at the end of 17-18. He's gotten his chance in the NHL, earned a letter with Hartford and maybe he was never going to be a top four type guy anyway... BUT he gave up the chances to be a top guy by being pegged a defensive specialist as the USNTDP and then leaving Minnesota before he got the chance to be counted on as the top pair guy instead of the defensive match-up guy.

Hard to fault a goalie who sees a chance to get time in the AHL playing. Only so many chances to play professionally and hard to predict what happens the next year for opportunities.

Casey... ugh... the NHL is not a developmental league and he's in the spot where he needs more time to develop. He had trouble learning at Minnesota. Sounds like it's continued at the next level. Best of luck to him.

C’mon GS...what does the style he played as a HS player have to do with being an NHL player who just turned 21 years old and what he’s tasked to do now? He will be fine down the road, he’s experiencing a bump in the road, as many 2nd year players do. For Gods sake, it’s only been the last 20 games where Erik Ek has done anything for the Wild, and he’s damn near 2 years older than CM ☝️

CM is the weakest 6'1" 200# I've ever seen. Worse, he has no nasty whatsoever in his game. Some of that is that he's still a young player, but he was not ready for the physical challenges of the NHL. The Schroeder comparison isn't so much physical stature but more the way they approach the physical part of the game (although admittedly I do often think of CM as being a more diminutive player).

Casey needs top 6 line minutes & PP minutes to try to get his mojo back. Other MN 1998 birth years in AHL (currently) include Joey Anderson & Riley Tufte & Keiffer Bellows. Playing regular shift NHL isn’t easy at 21 years old (despite what the esteemed hockey expert & Illinois Chicago Circle alum, Thirty-Four thinks) ?. The only MN 1998 playing NHL currently is Ryan Lindgren☝️

We’ll he did play for juggernaut UICC in the 1970’s. I was in Wessman arena as a PeeWee when UICC got beat by the UW-Superior Yellowjackets. :biggrin2: I guess that makes him a supreme hockey expert regarding players who just turned 21

Sometimes you just don’t like a player. I didn’t like him here and he’s spent two off seasons not doing much (or he’s incapable of gaining strength) to build his body for the NHL. Add to this I enjoy being right. I’ve read your posts for 14 years, you can talk sh!t with the best of us, you get it just fine.

Not liking a player is one thing Relishing when they struggle is another, The jury is far from in on Casey’s NHL career. I had lunch with my youngest son yesterday, he’s a senior at the U and played on a summer hockey team with Casey at age 14. He said he has no doubt Casey will have a successful NHL career in the long run. He said the same thing about Joey Anderson. Of course he actually was on the ice with both of them growing up & knows their character & drive to succeed as hockey players, I’ll trust his opinion over 34’s. 100 times out of 100.. that ultimately 34’s take on Casey will be proven WRONG. But...we will see...that will be determined by Casey.

It's so annoying. Kids growing up watch the NHL like crazy. You need some Gophers killing it cuz you know they're hearing Boeser's and others' names and college all the time.
