Matt Cullen

What are the odds that Cullen joins Housley on staff somewhere as a coach (not necessarily NHL) next season? The only Minnesotan to end his career winning two straight championships in addition to his previous one would look good on any resume, I'd imagine.

I loved Russo's column on Cullen this morning, especially what his three sons said to him after he missed on a glorious open net opportunity in an Eastern Conference final in Ottawa.

http://www.startribune.com/matt-cullen-eyes-another-stanley-cup-as-career-winds-down/427492873/

I missed that so thanks, it was a good read. I've always liked Cullen, and the fact he's still going amazes me. I grew-up in the NW when Moorhead was just beginning as a power and while there were certainly guys I didn't like (Jason Blake), I always had respect for the Cullens, pure class. Always liked Ryan Kraft, as well. Find it odd that Kraft and Matt both wear/wore #7, Broten influence perhaps?

I'm conflicted as to whom to root for. Pittsburgh has so many local guys it's easy to get wrapped up and root for them. At the same time I want Housley to finally win one; at least that dubious distinction of the most NHL games played without one would only be partially true. This has easily been one of the most entertaining and emotionally invested Finals I've seen in years, and I don't even know what team I want to win.

Not really. I will say that the guy can see a hockey game at a level that I can't even comprehend, but he just wasn't a very good coach. I have to believe that his commitment will be quite a bit higher in Buffalo than it was here though. Probably be easier for him to work with pro's instead of kids too.

Glad I won't have to skate against him at the Lumber yard again. That's not a fun lesson.

I thought he somewhat turned around the Ponies' program and his 2013 U20 team wasn't half bad. I'll be honest I don't know much about his time with NSH but they were just in the SC final....

Doman is who is responsible for where the Ponies are now. Housley only took the job to ensure his kid would play varsity, and he ran a few great guys out of town in the process.

Best skater in his draft. No surprise that combined with keeping things simple will lead to success for a long time.

He was good as a freshman, too. He just got his pocket picked one time and some of the fans around here couldn't let it go. :)

The thing he's really gotten going is moving up into the play. He was very good in the playoffs.

Getting cut from the US Jr. team in the 11th hour his freshman year was kind of a wake up call too. He was able to channel his disappointment into positive motivation.

He had a GREAT rookie year. Players develop at different paces...in college Mike Reilly played better than Brady, but the tables turned on that in a big way this year. Hopefully Reilly will have a break out year in 2017-2018. Reilly defensive game needs to improve, he's fine offensively.

Reilly was a scorer at the college level and won two All Americas because of it. Skjei was defensive minded, and why wouldn't he be with Reilly and Marshall on the team? Maybe the Gophers' coaches could have brought him along a little more offensively...the kid obviously had it in him.

I have high hopes for Reilly and the other young kid, Olofsson. They're both great skaters but both still a ways from playing regularly in the line up.

I love this. Kid is fun to watch and clearly has learned from the time he was a freshman at the U. Is there another player that has come in quite highly thought of, played so little their first year and then exploded the next two seasons. Would love to see him become a star for the Knights.

It is a great break for Nate to go to Las Vegas.

If you are talking about what a player did during their time as a Gopher, Tom Vannelli would be the best comparison to Schmidt point wise. Tommy V played in 17 games during his freshman season putting up three assists. He put up 177 points in the following three seasons to finish with 180 and he is currently the number 12 scorer all time for the Gophers. At St. Paul Academy he put up huge numbers too. His senior year (1973) he had 105 total points and 225 total career points.

Great call. I think this may have been mentioned before (maybe even by you). That's before my time as a Gopher fan (not that I'd have remembered anyway). Those are some pretty impressive stats.

I still remember seeing Nate in street clothes his freshman year down here in Mankato during the game. Then the following season he got the Justin Holl treatment at forward before blowing up his junior year finally on D. I will always cheer him on because of the way he played his last two years here.

So, does the Gopher staff get credit for developing him, or should they be reviled for bungling his first couple years? :)

Yes, it was quite a drastic change after his freshman season. I believe it was his sophmore year that he played lights out for us though, pretty sure he didn't play any forward that year.

Okay...you're right. Slide my remarks back one year about playing forward his freshman year then it was his sophomore year he blew up. I just really remember that he was in street clothes in Mankato his freshman year because the players who didn't dress stood up by our section (section 200) for a portion of the game that night.

Yep, Hill coaching the D in 10-11 = Schmidt on spotty forward duty, 11-12 Guentzel comes back and Schmidt blows up at D. Not that that was the only reason, but it makes for perfect narrative around here.

My bad, I assumed he was going to play in AHL. Oops I still stand by my nomad comment though :D

Maybe a dumb question, but since he signed a 3 year entry level deal, does that deal start today, and would end in 3 years, or it doesn't start until he plays in AHL/NHL?

Assuming that this is Bellows' 19year old season, it wont start this year unless he plays 10 games or more in the NHL. AHL years count as long as the player is at least 20 years old.
