but Veegs will just have to go on without him. 0:51 Yeah, we just go Next Man Up. 0:53 Yeah, well, there's no Next Man Up. 0:55 It's just us two. 0:57 Tried to get some guests. 0:58 Didn't quite work out. 0:59 Wanted to have Rick Pizzo on this week, but he was just too busy with TV, and Mazaka was busy, so I'm like, you know what, we'll have a short show. 1:06 That's fine, no big deal. 1:09 That's why I go and gather the audio. 1:12 That is true, and if people are listening, make sure you always listen to the end, or at least the recording, because VEGO always goes to the media every week, records Lucia, two or three players. 1:23 This week it's got three players, I believe, don't you? 1:25 Yep. 1:26 And I always add that audio to the end of the podcast, so if you're listening live, you'll have to come back and listen to it later, but I always add that to the end. 1:32 You get to hear what Lucia's thinking this week, and get some opinions from the players, which is, eh, it's not so bad, is it? 1:42 No, it's not too bad. 1:43 I think it was a big week for them to get some confidence by playing Ohio State. 1:48 I think they're getting some trust in each other on the ice, which is crucial for this team to have success, and we saw some of that in the games. 1:57 Well, they're a couple tight games, let me tell you that. 1:59 I mean, that first game Friday night started out not that great, down two to nothing, coming into the third, I would love to have heard what happened in the locker room, but they seem to have gotten jump started, got those two goals, tied it up, fashion wins it in overtime, hoopla on the ice, all is good, Veegs. 2:18 Yeah, it's always good to get the overtime winner. 2:21 I think Lucia has been trying to figure out what buttons to push with this team. 2:24 He's got 10 new guys, could be in the lineup, and throughout the season, he's been trying to put two veteran guys with a freshman on each line, and that hasn't gotten every line going. 2:35 The bristet line, what they call the gold line, has been the only one that's been able to consistently be offensive, get lots of chances, and not spend much time in their own zone. 2:46 And so he's been trying to find ways to get other guys going, and in those first two periods, it just wasn't working at all. 2:52 Well, just like you said, he started with completely different lines of those first two periods Friday night. 2:58 Yep, all week he had been shuffling up the lines in practice, trying to find something that would work, and I think he's really sticking to playing four lines and trying to put a young guy with two older guys to try to keep something going there, and it just wasn't working. 3:11 You saw big gaps between the defensemen and the Fords on breakouts, on the offensive zone, you didn't see a lot of sustained pressure, you saw turnovers, and it was just kind of an ugly start for them. 3:23 Well, definitely an ugly start, but obviously they got it together, Sheehy got on the board, Novak tied it up, both power play goals, which is always good to see. 3:31 And then after a spectacular save by Sheerhorn early in that overtime, fashion comes down and wins it with a nice pass from Novak from behind the net. 3:42 So it turned out well, but it was a little hairy at the beginning there, I'll tell you that. 3:47 Yeah, I think getting power play opportunities is really key for this team, and they've been converting them. 3:52 Connor Riley talked about it today, how after the St. 3:55 Cloud series, they saw just how quickly a team has to move the puck to be successful, because they certainly saw the Huskies do that to them. 4:03 And I think since that game, their power plays picked up to another level. 4:07 I don't know what their percentage is the last couple of weeks, but it's almost a goal a game, if not more. 4:13 And it's because they're moving the puck so quickly. 4:15 I think the first couple of weeks, you just have guys who were standing in their assigned spot and receiving the pass and not quite sure what to do with it. 4:23 And that made it really easy for penalty kills. 4:25 But lately, they're moving it, they're getting one timers, they're getting tips, they're getting second opportunities. 4:31 I think the penalty kills are kind of losing their shape because of how well they're moving the puck. 4:36 And those are definite keys. 4:38 Then with the fashion goal in overtime, just a heady play by Novak to take it wide. 4:44 I think a lot of players probably would have saw that opportunity and just put the puck on the net. 4:48 But he saw that there was room to get behind the net and draw some players to him, and then he found fashion for a great goal. 4:55 Well, it turned out well after. 4:57 It's not starting so well Friday night. 4:59 For those of you listening live, send us some questions. 5:02 Send us some topics you want us to talk about. 5:04 Just use the hashtag on Twitter, GPL Podcasts, and we'll try to talk about it. 5:09 I've seen a couple out there so far already, but send it to us. 5:13 It's just us two tonight, so we need the content. 5:17 Moving on to Friday, pretty good game. 5:20 Get to the third, you're up by two goals. 5:24 Oh boy, Ohio State gets within one, and boy, does it never fail. 5:28 Oh, five minute major, what was it, checking from behind, I think it was? 5:34 Or was it boarding? 5:36 I think it was a boarding call. 5:38 Yeah, and a lot of people question it all, it shouldn't have been a five, blah, blah, blah. 5:42 You know what? 5:43 They're gonna call it. 5:44 If there's anything close to it, they're gonna call it. 5:47 The players need to know this. 5:49 Yeah, but it's just a player safety issue. 5:52 Exactly. 5:53 Especially when it's that four or five feet away from the wall. 5:56 You just have to pull up when you see the numbers. 5:59 Collins is a big guy, and maybe the guy was a little off balance, but you can't put your opponent in that position. 6:05 You gotta respect them. 6:06 And you can't put yourself in that position late in the game. 6:09 Exactly. 6:10 I think it's a guy just maybe late in a shift, trying to get off the ice, and he's a big guy. 6:18 Unfortunately, it cost him, and they almost killed off the penalty. 6:21 They did. 6:23 They had done a wonderful job for the entire five minutes. 6:27 And then Greco obviously gets almost a wide open net because of some good puck movement. 6:33 But they had pulled their goalie, so it was a two-man advantage, essentially. 6:37 A lot of bodies out on the ice. 6:40 But boy, they just couldn't quite get through it. 6:43 Yeah, something that the Gopher penalty kills had to do since that same cloud series is kind of almost go to a diamond or a triangle and one penalty kill, just to make sure they're protecting the front of the net and trying to keep their opponents from making those seam passes horizontally across the rink. 7:01 They had done a really good job of preventing that and keeping opposing power plays to the outside. 7:07 I think they did a better job blocking shots lately, especially Saturday against Ohio State. 7:14 And then they had a player chase the puck outside the dots and they kind of lose their shape. 7:18 And that creates that backdoor play and you know, Ohio State capitalized on it. 7:22 It was just one small mistake in five minutes and it cost them. 7:25 You know, I had noticed earlier on that power play and other power plays on Saturday night while watching on TV is that, and you know, that weak side was open and that Ohio State kind of missed it a few times. 7:37 I mean, I noticed a few times that, you know, Shearhorn wasn't getting over and if it wasn't for a little bouncy pass or a missed shot, it looked like it was open. 7:46 So we definitely need to pick up our coverage there. 7:48 Yeah, I think the one thing though that was happening is they were keeping that pass a little bit farther out from the net than they had in previous games. 7:56 You know, by putting those, that triangle in the slot, you know, they are forcing them to go a little bit wider with those plays and it's a little bit longer pass. 8:04 It's a little bit tougher. 8:06 And against a team like Ohio State, you can get away with that. 8:09 Maybe this weekend against Michigan, you know, they're gonna have to be better with their sticks and seams because that's a team that's got a lot more talent. 8:16 But all in all, six points on the weekend, just what the team needed to try to, you know, just at least get this season going. 8:24 They're tied with Penn State who also had, who they swept, it was at Michigan State this past weekend. 8:31 Michigan almost swept Wisconsin. 8:34 That second game ended up in a tie and they wanted to shoot out. 8:37 So they're just one point back and then the rest of everyone else is, you know, just bring it up the rear. 8:42 So there's nothing there. 8:45 Yeah, pretty amazing to see Wisconsin put up 10 goals on this weekend. 8:50 You know, Wisconsin's not as bad as people say they are, I tell ya. 8:53 No, they've got some talent. 8:54 They can score goals. 8:56 This is not the Wisconsin team of last year. 8:58 Obviously not a powerhouse team, but I mean, they beat North Dakota this year. 9:04 When nobody saw that coming, they thought that weekend was gonna be a blowout and I think they're the only one who really put a dent into North Dakota so far this year. 9:13 Yeah, they've surprised. 9:15 They're the only Big Ten teams, I think, to get non-conference win and tie. 9:19 Oh, that's ugly, man. 9:23 That is just ugly. 9:23 Against the natural conference. 9:27 Sean Becker on Twitter, he didn't use the hashtag, but he did notice this question. 9:31 He's like, to me, this team is missing good puck, or this team is missing a good puck moving defenseman and kind of getting trapped in the D-zone. 9:40 We've been kind of talking about this all year, that they kind of need somebody to move the puck out of the zone. 9:46 Yeah, you know, they've got some guys who have more size right now, but they don't have a shade. 9:51 They don't have a Mikey Riley. 9:53 And so I think a lot more responsibility has been placed on the forwards to come back to the puck, get some speed behind the puck, because there aren't defensemen who can just lug it and wheel it up the ice. 10:05 Well, I know you've said in the past that it's not just the defensemen, that these forwards need to also be in position to take a pass, and that hasn't been happening as much. 10:16 No, because if you have a defenseman who really can't beat more than a guy to create space, he needs help. 10:23 This is a little bit different team than years past in the way the roster is constructed. 10:28 So there's a lot more responsibility on the forwards to help on the breakout. 10:32 You'll see a couple of times every game where the defensemen are passing the puck back and forth to each other at the dots or below the circle, and they don't have any guys getting open. 10:43 And they could force the bad pass, or they could just get it in the neutral zone and get it back behind the opponent's D. 10:50 But it's a little bit different to go for hockey than people are used to seeing. 10:54 Yeah, we need these forwards to come back and support them. 10:56 We can't just go for the long pass. 10:58 I'm sorry, but there's, well, I'm gonna date myself here, but I remember Dan Trubble being able to make that long pass out, opening up the game completely. 11:09 I'm sorry, we just don't have that kind of skill back here anymore. 11:12 And opponents don't allow that much more. 11:16 Yeah, I think you see a lot of one three one in college hockey these days and those lanes just aren't there. 11:22 If you try to make long passes against Michigan this weekend, you're gonna get into trouble because they can activate, get in transition, bring a defenseman with. 11:30 And if you got forwards going the wrong way, it's gonna be a long night for you. 11:35 Definitely. 11:36 Paul's got a question. 11:37 He wants to know, is the start this team has had reasonable given the youth? 11:43 Or should Lucia be feeling some heat because of it? 11:47 Well, I think it's tough to put a lot of heat on them because they're playing a good schedule. 11:52 It's not like they're playing cupcake teams like the go-for-basketball team is scheduling. 11:57 Yeah, but they're also losing to the cupcakes. 12:02 What team's coming in here next? 12:03 South Dakota Tech? 12:06 I mean, really? 12:07 It's not exactly like bringing in St. 12:09 Cloud State in hockey or UMD or Minnesota State. 12:12 These teams are among the top 20 in college hockey and they're tough beats, especially in college hockey with goaltending and the coaching and the defensive structure that teams play and guys who come into college as 20, 21-year-old freshmen. 12:27 It's tough to beat these teams. 12:29 It's not an easy pushover game. 12:32 I think there could be some heat on Lucia if this team falters in the Big Ten and doesn't compete for a spot in the NCAA tournament because they definitely do have good talent. 12:42 I think they've got a great goaltender and sheer horn that they can rely on. 12:46 I know coming in the season, Lucia wasn't sure what he had there, but he still felt confident in the rest of the team. 12:52 Well, now he's got a great goaltender. 12:54 So this team's poised to do some things in the Big Ten. 12:58 Definitely got a good goaltender. 13:00 That kid's pretty good. 13:01 Yeah, when he sees the puck, he is sharp. 13:05 He struggled a little bit early, I think, with just his rebound control and every now and then it'll come around when he gets too active. 13:12 But when he's set and sees the puck, he's really a solid goalie. 13:16 And that's kind of what they need. 13:18 They need that backstop to save them once in a while because obviously the inexperience right in front of them. 13:23 Well, I think that's what they're doing on their penalty kills. 13:25 They're putting a little bit more on their goalie shoulders to make more saves. 13:30 And when you have a goalie, you can do that. 13:33 Well, before we continue with this abbreviated podcast, let's hear from our sponsor, Vintage Minnesota Hockey. 13:41 Vintage Minnesota Hockey wants you to take a step back in Speaking of jerseys, Veegs, boy, the team introduced some new golds this past Saturday and I know that Vintage is looking into getting those made, so keep an eye out in the next few months. 14:43 They're gonna try to get those nice new gold jerseys made, but what did you think of the new gold jerseys? 14:50 I think that state patch on the front of the chest was by far the sharpest feature of that jersey. 14:55 But it's nice, it's classic, it's got the big M on it, and sometimes when you get into these alternate jerseys, they get a little carried away, but I think they did well with this one. 15:06 They've gone through a lot of jerseys the last few years, and if only the team would sell these jerseys, they could make a mince, but it's one operation that I know you've had in the past few years, I know I have too. 15:18 We've had to go to places like Vintage to get anything even close to this stuff. 15:22 Well, and that's why Vintage stepped up into the niche of the market and delivers a good product. 15:28 They definitely do. 15:29 I mean, a few years ago, some of us were able to get some official jerseys, that they did one order of 30 or 35 jerseys a few years ago. 15:41 And some of us got our hands on a couple of those. 15:43 And then they gave the rest to Goldie's Locker Room. 15:49 And they sold. 15:52 Surprisingly, shocking, they sold. 15:54 I mean, it cost them 150. 15:56 They sold them for 250, which I think is fair enough, considering that they were official jerseys. 16:03 And they sold great. 16:05 And we see other schools, famously North Dakota, they do a fine job on their jerseys and replica jerseys, but Minnesota has always just done a terrible job. 16:18 That's why places like Vintage Hockey come around. 16:22 Yeah, definitely, but it's obviously a little small shop. 16:25 And the frustration I've always had, obviously, is sometimes the jerseys that they sell at Goldie's Locker Room or wherever, they don't even have the right kind of M on the cover, the colors aren't right. 16:37 Yeah, that's always the surprising thing. 16:40 Yeah, how do you mess up a logo? 16:43 Yeah, what they do offer never is quite right. 16:45 So always confusing there. 16:48 Yeah, well, we just have to live with it, unfortunately. 16:53 We know they could make a killing, but obviously it's good for our sponsor because he makes those jerseys. 16:59 And they're fine quality and they look great. 17:02 And they look like the jersey, which is more than you can ask for. 17:07 All right, Veegs, in the past when Minnesota would play Michigan, personally, it was my second favorite team the Gophers played, second to North Dakota. 17:19 I always loved the college hockey showcase. 17:23 Every year you got to see Michigan. 17:25 It was at high tempo. 17:28 It was entertaining hockey. 17:30 I'm hoping that with the new BigTen League it starts to become a great rival like it was pre-WCHA even. 17:40 Well, actually, going back eons, Michigan was the team, was the rival. 17:46 I hope it comes back. 17:47 But this weekend we rekindle the rivalry and we get to play a team that's probably better than Minnesota right now. 17:54 Yeah, I think right now Michigan's jelled a lot faster. 17:58 I mean, on the flip side, you look at their schedule and they haven't exactly played the kind of schedule that Minnesota has by playing with the Robert Morris, Niagara's, Dartmouth, Mercyhurst. 18:09 They haven't gone exactly with the killer schedule. 18:11 But they do have a lot of talent and they do play an exciting brand of hockey. 18:16 You look at their roster and they've got a bunch of draft picks. 18:19 I think they've got about 10 or 11. 18:22 They're fun to watch. 18:23 They put up a lot of goals. 18:24 I think they're one of the highest scoring teams in the country. 18:27 They generate a lot of shots. 18:29 They have a good power play. 18:31 They're definitely the peer to Minnesota in this conference. 18:35 And that's why I've always enjoyed those games. 18:37 I mean, second to North Dakota, they were always high-temple, fast, high-scoring games. 18:43 Going back to the early days of the College Hockey Showcase, they would play the Bonnen and Crowley days. 18:50 They were playing at the Civic Center for the College Hockey Showcase. 18:55 All four teams would play there. 18:57 Boy, it was great hockey. 18:59 And then they went to on-campus. 19:00 It was still very entertaining. 19:02 And obviously, this rivalry goes back a long time. 19:05 And I would say, second to North Dakota, this is the most contested rivalry for Minnesota. 19:12 I mean, I look at the all-time numbers, and Minnesota is only up by 14 games. 19:17 It's 134, 120, and 14. 19:21 So this is a long, historic rivalry, and I just hope it comes back to where it was before. 19:29 Yeah, to be a rivalry, you definitely have an opponent that's competitive with you. 19:34 I think both sides winning their fair share of games is important. 19:39 I think having good fan bases is important. 19:41 I think that's one of the biggest things in the old WCHA is the fans could get into it with each other. 19:47 And I think with Michigan, you're seeing a little bit smaller fan base, but just as passionate. 19:52 Connor Riley was talking today how he likes going in there because it feels like they're right on top of you. 19:57 Yep. 19:58 Because of the way the building's constructed and the seats are elevated. 20:01 And he says, you know, when the children of Yost bring out their posters, trying to get in the side and go for players, they notice it and think it's pretty funny and they get a kick out of it. 20:12 So, you know, it's one of those rinks where the fans care. 20:15 It's not like Cole Center where people are just there for the party. 20:18 You know, these people are there to support their hockey team. 20:22 Well, one thing I think would help with this rivalry is having, you know, some kind of game that somebody gets knocked out or costs them the season. 20:30 I mean, we haven't had that in a while with Michigan, and maybe that's why there hasn't been as much excitement with the rivalry. 20:36 I mean, obviously back in 2002 and 2003, we knocked them out of the Frozen Four. 20:44 Before that, Michigan knocked us out when we had some great teams, the Mike Leggold. 20:49 So it was much more intense back then. 20:51 I think this rivalry might need something like that to get it back to where it was. 20:57 Yeah, although it has been Minnesota who's ended Michigan's season basically the last two years. 21:02 Yeah, but it's not quite the same, though. 21:04 I mean, they had a little bit subpar teams, and it was the Big Ten playoffs. 21:12 It wasn't in the NCAAs or anything like that. 21:16 Well, Michigan was the first team out the last two years basically. 21:19 By losing to Minnesota in the Big Ten Championship last year, that put them to 17 on the bubble and kicked them out. 21:27 The year before, Minnesota clinched the Big Ten at Yost. 21:31 That knocked them out of the pairwise, and they didn't recover. 21:35 So Minnesota's probably knocked them out. 21:37 I think it was a reverse. 21:38 I think Minnesota fans would be a little more upset about Michigan, but lately we've had their number. 21:44 And maybe that's what needs to happen, and maybe that's why I thought it was such a rivalry, because back in the 90s when I really started getting into this rivalry, obviously we would beat them at the College Hockey Showcase, but then obviously Mike Legg ends the Gopher season with that wonderful lacrosse goal that no one will ever forget. 22:04 So maybe it's going to take Michigan ending a Minnesota season to kind of start building that rivalry up, because that's how rivalries are built. 22:12 You got to lose these teams to build it. 22:15 So maybe that's what's going to have to happen eventually here, because Minnesota needs a big rival in order for this conference to work at all. 22:24 Yeah, and I think the fans need to accept that this is the big rival right now. 22:29 Michael Downing took some runs at Gopher players last season, the season before, and I don't even see people on the message boards bringing that up. 22:39 If this was a North Dakota player taking a run at somebody, a Ben Blood thing or something in the handshake line, people would be bringing that up before the series. 22:48 And so I just think it's Minnesota fans are kind of wallowing and leaving their old rivals behind, and here's a great one coming up this weekend to plan for watching on TV, and the people who do make the fan trip out there to the OSU will be in for a treat. 23:06 I need to make that trip someday. 23:08 It's a great building. 23:09 It's a little bit smaller, and it's a different atmosphere. 23:12 I think it's more of a collegiate atmosphere. 23:14 There's more bands, there's more fans. 23:16 It's more focused on the game itself than all the lights and NHL stuff that seems to be creeping into the other teams out here like in St. 23:25 Cloud in North Dakota. 23:26 You mean more like Minnesota used to be? 23:28 Yeah, more like the way Minnesota used to be. 23:31 A good old college hockey game. 23:35 I've talked with the main PR guy at the Gopher Games. 23:40 He's obviously got to get advertisements in, and he's got to get this music in. 23:44 A lot of people don't like it, but unfortunately, the crowd became so lame that the band wasn't enough to get the crowd going anymore, so they had to start playing that music and all that, and start doing more hoopla of the pregame, because the crowd just kind of didn't really get into it. 24:02 I kind of miss that atmosphere or that college atmosphere, because you know what? 24:06 You don't hear the band as much anymore, and you don't just have that college feel at Mariucci like they used to be. 24:12 Yeah, I mean, right now you definitely have to have a mix, because unless you have a passionate fan base, you've got to kind of figure out a way to get people interested. 24:21 And the students do love the Let's Get Weird, and it's always kind of funny for everybody else outside of the 2,000 students that are there to watch it and take it in. 24:29 But the Rouser and the Battle Hymn are part of history here. 24:35 It's something that's still part of the game, and the fans who've been with it for a long time expect. 24:41 I wish they would actually bring back the original salute at the end, that one minute remaining, when you start playing the Battle Hymn. 24:51 Because that's how it was in the old days. 24:52 You'd start playing before the game was over, and it just built up the crowd and built everything up, built it up to that last, the last horn going off. 25:02 Obviously, we haven't seen that in, what, 20 years. 25:05 It's been a while, but even I remember that. 25:07 Oh, it was just really, it was almost like a big wave or a crescendo was building, and if there was a stoppage, it kind of dragged it on even more, built it up even more. 25:19 Ah, the old days. 25:23 We're just getting old, Veegs. 25:28 I know it. 25:29 It's just the truth. 25:30 We're old, we have kids, we're getting cranky. 25:34 I don't know what it is. 25:35 Let's get weird. 25:36 What did you think of Let's Get Weird? 25:38 I was a little disappointed. 25:40 Oh, it's just because it was so much hype built up coming into it. 25:42 That's why you're disappointed. 25:44 A lot of the same clips and I don't know. 25:48 I think it's something that Devin's done a good job with and the fans look forward to it and it's definitely weird. 25:54 I got my mask. 25:55 That's all I care about. 25:56 That's key for you. 25:59 I didn't get one, so I'll be okay, though. 26:02 Yeah, you were there, but I kind of asked Devin if he could get us one. 26:07 Yeah, traffic on Friday was a little bit ridiculous. 26:10 Did we ever find out what the deal was with that? 26:14 There was a youth football event happening at the Beerman Building and then there was the volleyball team, which is on a phenomenal run. 26:23 Their match started a little bit earlier, so there was no parking left on campus in a lot of the usual spots. 26:29 Usually, the university sends out an email to people associated with either parking on campus or season ticket holders or interested parties on Twitter, letting them know that they have to get there a little bit earlier. 26:42 I think they were a little caught off guard by how many people were on campus that night. 26:48 I left work early. 26:50 We got down there early enough, but even early. 26:53 Before 6 p.m., it was just jam-packed down there. 26:58 I kept thinking we were lucky to get in then because we left so early, but anyone trying to get there by 6.30 or 6.45, no chance. 27:08 Yeah, I've been impressed that I've seen scalpers outside the pavilion selling volleyball tickets this year. 27:13 I think that's a new one for me. 27:16 Well, obviously, the volleyball team, they're moving on in the tournament. 27:21 Boy, they're an excellent team, so hopefully they can break through. 27:25 Obviously, we followed the women's team a little bit, and the former SID for the women's team is now the SID for the volleyball team, so it's great that she just keeps going from one winning team to another. 27:39 Let me tell you. 27:40 Well, it's a great run. 27:43 It is a great run. 27:44 What else do we have to talk about, Veegs? 27:47 Ryan Collins was named to the World Junior Development Camp roster. 27:52 Yeah, you think he deserved it, though. 27:54 I think so. 27:54 You think so? 27:55 I think it's just because he's been on the USA team before, and they always kind of prefer those guys who have been on that team. 28:03 You don't see too many kids who are 19 with that kind of size, physicality. 28:09 And he's a better skater than people give him credit for. 28:12 I think he's not obviously a Mike Riley or a Brady Shea, but he's definitely a big physical guy. 28:19 And you put him in a rink where he's one of the oldest kids, he's going to be a tough one in the defensive zone. 28:25 Especially you get on an NHL size rink where that reach becomes even more important. 28:31 I think he's going to be fine there. 28:33 I'd be surprised if they leave him off. 28:35 Well, we do know one thing is that this will be the last podcast of the year. 28:41 This is our month break coming up after this, so we won't be back until after the first. 28:45 But one thing that will happen while we're gone, Veegs, is the old Mariucci Classic, and we never really get a chance to talk about it because obviously we're always on the break, and that's just kind of the way it goes. 28:58 But we've got this year, we've got UConn, was it Ferris State and Harvard coming in for the Classic? 29:05 Do you have any thoughts on that? 29:06 Besides, no TV again on that Saturday night? 29:10 We'll try to be there Saturday night, especially if they draw Harvard. 29:13 I think playing in a team like that is something that could definitely hurt or help their pairwise come down the stretch, because Harvard looks like they're going to be one of the top ECAC schools, and they have some talented players. 29:27 Jimmy Vessi is one to watch for them. 29:30 So I'd expect to see them in the championship game, and obviously with Minnesota playing UConn, you'd think they'd be there as well. 29:36 Well, you'd think they'd be there, but, you know, UConn did have a nice weekend this past weekend. 29:42 Upset, oh, who wasn't, oh, jeez, I can't remember. 29:46 They swept somebody, they weren't supposed to. 29:50 I'm just blanking now. 29:52 I know they swept somebody, and it was kind of an upset this past weekend. 29:55 It wasn't Merrimack, it was, well, I'm losing it. 30:00 I don't remember. 30:01 UMass. 30:02 Was it UMass? 30:03 Well, there we go. 30:04 UMass is not a bad team. 30:06 Nope, they're a team that's made some NCAA runs, so a good sweep for them. 30:12 Oh, I know what else. 30:14 This past week, people started talking about UNLV in hockey. 30:20 That would surprise me. 30:21 Yeah, I don't get that. 30:25 They do say that the number one key to starting a program is a donor. 30:29 So if UNLV club hockey has figured out a donor who can put some money and endow the program, I don't see why a team would pass that up. 30:38 And Las Vegas is probably going to get an NHL team here shortly. 30:44 So there is a hockey market there. 30:46 Do you think Arizona is going to go there? 30:49 Or do you think Arizona is now put in place? 30:53 Their financials. 30:54 I know they wanted to move and they want to do all this stuff, but it seems like it was getting better in Arizona. 30:59 But who is going to go to... 31:01 or will they get an expansion team? 31:05 Well, I think Las Vegas will get an expansion team. 31:07 Really? 31:07 I think Quebec City is actually the one that is being put on hold. 31:14 Elliott Friedman writes a column for Sportsset. 31:21 That was what he was with today. 31:22 He thinks they might just add one team as an expansion team and have it in Las Vegas because they clearly have an owner there already. 31:29 They clearly have a rink under construction. 31:31 I think Quebec City has a rink, but it's a little murkier for how that would work. 31:35 And I know Gary Battman would not like to have an unbalanced conference structure and obviously a team in Quebec City wouldn't be a great fit for the Western Conference. 31:44 Plus, Canada right now with the dollar, they're just having problems all around there. 31:50 That's one thing Lou Nanny was talking about yesterday is on what Barrero is saying, you got the six teams, but with the salary and the difference in the Canadian dollar and all this stuff, it's not easy to have a Canadian team these days. 32:03 Nope, and it's hurting the salary cap growth in the NHL too. 32:06 That's why you haven't seen a trade yet in the NHL this year, because things are so tight. 32:11 It's why there are so many teams competing for guys like Mike Riley to get them in their system, because they need cheap young players to fill roster spots. 32:19 I think it's a reason why Jordan Leopold is planning weddings instead of on an NHL roster, because there's just not a fit for those guys. 32:29 Yeah, but if you add another team, will it be watering it down even more? 32:33 I think there's plenty of talent in the world. 32:35 And, you know, there's a lot of good players out there, especially with the way hockey is in the KHL. 32:41 And, you know, there's been so much growth in USA hockey. 32:45 Now there's players from all over the country who play. 32:48 And there's plenty of good goaltenders out there. 32:50 There's a reason why scoring is down. 32:53 Well, I've always thought that the padding has just gotten a little out of control. 32:57 The fact that they're talking about making the goals bigger, kind of disappointing. 33:01 Yeah, I think that's the same. 33:02 I mean, I really don't think. 33:03 I mean, obviously the goalies are bigger themselves, but you know what? 33:08 The pads are still awfully big. 33:11 It's definitely an issue. 33:12 And then of course you got guys like Dean Blaise who think that every college rink needs to be 85 feet wide. 33:18 Oh, jeez. 33:18 How convenient now that he just got a brand new arena. 33:22 Yeah, you know, make everybody else shrink those rinks down. 33:25 Well, he just wants to, he just, he's just going after the Big Ten because of that new rule they want to have. 33:31 Well, I'll be interested to see what happens in January. 33:34 That's also something that's coming up while we're on break is they'll be prepping for those NCAA meetings and the Power Five schools have all their votes to kind of dictate what happens. 33:45 And I'd be surprised if it ends up any other way than that passing. 33:49 Well, we'll just have to wait and see. 33:51 We just don't know. 33:53 It's going to piss off a lot of people. 33:56 Get used to it. 33:57 Yeah. 33:58 Yeah. 33:59 Obviously, I don't think Don is making too many friends or the other coaches. 34:04 Excuse me. 34:05 So we'll just have to see. 34:07 I think we're good, Beaks. 34:11 All right. 34:11 Well, it should be a good series this weekend. 34:13 Should be fun hockey. 34:15 Michigan's had trouble keeping it out of their own net. 34:17 So should be lots of scoring. 34:19 And that's part of what makes college hockey great is there's not so much discipline in the structure and teams can get up and down the rink a lot. 34:27 So should be fun. 34:28 And that's why I've always loved it. 34:30 It's just a different game than the NHL. 34:31 I just don't enjoy it. 34:33 I love NHL playoffs, but I would rather sit and watch a college hockey game than a pro game. 34:42 Just my preference, but that's how it is. 34:46 Yep, college hockey and the World Juniors. 34:47 Two great examples of skill. 34:49 Yeah, the Juniors is a completely different thing. 34:52 That I enjoy, and boy, the Olympic play is obviously off the charts as well. 34:57 I mean, that's when you really get to see... 34:58 The Olympic play, I think, is still the best hockey you're going to see along with the Juniors, just because these guys... 35:05 It isn't like they're all-star teams, but it's not like an all-star game. 35:10 It's an up and down hockey, crisp, clean. 35:14 Guys playing for their country, not even caring. 35:18 It's obviously great hockey. 35:21 Yeah, Don Lucia compared it to Canada as like their final four for basketball, and I think it's even bigger. 35:27 I think the World Junior event is almost as big as the Stanley Cup in Canada, because Canada hasn't had too many teams in the Stanley Cup lately, so they put all their eggs in this World Junior tournament. 35:39 I don't blame them. 35:40 It would be nice if we could get that here in Minnesota again. 35:43 It's been a long time, really. 35:46 At least I should say the Twin Cities. 35:48 Obviously, they did some Thief River Falls stuff back when Grand Forks had it, but I'd love to see the X have it. 35:55 Obviously, there's other rinks. 35:57 There's regional rinks in Minnesota here that would be great for some of the smaller games. 36:03 Yeah, I think that's the key, is to have two good rinks where you can have a good crowd. 36:09 It would be great to see the Twin Cities. 36:10 I think it was at the Civic Center in maybe 1980. 36:13 I think it was the last time it was here. 36:15 It's been in Grand Forks, and now it's going to be in Buffalo here in a couple years, and they're going to have an outdoor game for the Round Robin game, hopefully between the US and Canada. 36:26 So that should be interesting, but I'd much rather see it here at XL. 36:31 I think it would be a great crowd. 36:33 Oh, it would be off the charts. 36:35 And maybe if Mariucci ever gets shrunk down, they would use the Twin Cities, because Mariucci is smaller ice, 10,000 people, it makes a great second venue. 36:46 Even Ritter would be a great one for those smaller teams. 36:49 When Latvia and Germany are playing, Ritter would be a great spot for those people, because they'd probably fill the rink with 3,000-4,000 people, and it would be a good atmosphere for that. 37:00 Oh, definitely, definitely it would be. 37:02 Well, that's all for this week. 37:04 We'll be back after the new year. 37:07 We'll recap Michigan, we'll recap the college, the Marriott G Classic and everything like that. 37:14 Until then, have a Happy New Year, Merry Christmas, whatever you want to call it. 37:54 So a couple of dramatic wins from last weekend. 37:56 How do you think the Overtimes played out otherwise, other than being happy about the wins? 38:00 Well, they played out perfectly. 38:01 I don't think they played out any better than that. 38:03 You know, I give our guys a lot of credit that, you know, the first night we had to come back from a two-goal deficit entering the third period and score the second shift of overtime, and a nice play from Tommy Novak, Hudson Fashing, and then the second night, we had a good start to the game. 38:17 We were up. 38:18 We scored two goals early in the third, gave up a fluke. 38:21 We wanted to make it four or three, and then we took the five-minute major with five minutes to go in the game. 38:25 I mean, we held off about as long as we could until the six on four, and then they were able to score, but again, the ability to be able to take a punch and come back and probably score my favorite goal of the year, because not only was it dramatic in overtime, but just the way they scored with four or five whacks on the blue paint, and it's a point of emphasis that if you're going to score four goals, you've got to get to that area of the rink. 38:47 How important is it to, I guess, win games like that just so they can just obviously just simply build that confidence, but just to be able to move forward and draw on that? 38:55 Well, I think we were disappointed to lose two the weekend before, and obviously with our home record not where we hoped it would be at this stage of the season, and to be able to bounce back and win a couple of games, or the first two Big Ten games, so all of a sudden you're looking at two and 0 in the standings, and that's a good place to be at this early stretch of the season. 39:13 So it's something we can build off of, but at the same time, whether you win or lose on a weekend, when Monday rolls around, it's over. 39:19 You practice Monday and kind of show what happened on Saturday night's game, and then you put that to bed, and then you look forward to the next opponent, and that's Michigan, who's very good at home, and has lost one home game on the season. 39:30 So we know we're going to find a lot more about our team this weekend. 39:35 You've talked about using all five guys in the offensive zone, and you saw a little bit more of that this past weekend. 39:40 Is that something you think will continue this weekend? 39:43 Well, you have to, and trying to get our D more involved, and I think we've seen our team evolve in doing that, and we've tried to specifically set up some drills and practice to emphasize that part of the game, that you can't play three on five down low, and you can't just think you're going to score every goal off a line rush. 40:00 So you've got to get the ground game going and grind it out down there with your puck possession, but you've got to include the defenseman, and then the defenseman has to be able to make a play on the blue line. 40:10 Do you think that's something that can help some of the guys who have been struggling so far? 40:13 Well, it can help. 40:14 I mean, a nice way to get a goal if you're struggling offensive is to get a tip to get a rebound. 40:18 One goes off your rear end, you know, anyway. 40:21 And we need some of those guys. 40:23 It would be great to get a rebound tip type goal. 40:25 They don't all have to be fancy, you know, rushes up the rink at three or four passes and, you know, rip one in. 40:31 They just need to score anyway possible. 40:33 What would be the emphasis this weekend with all the shots that Michigan gets and all the goals you're scoring? 40:39 Well, I mean, number one is taking care of the puck. 40:41 I mean, I just went through the goals we gave up before I came down last year in Ann Arbor, and that's something we'll show the guys just as a reminder that they're such a good transition team, and they've got great skill. 40:53 They're here going to get up and ball them to play. 40:54 So if you turn the puck over, I mean, you're just, you're going to give up a great scoring opportunity, and when you give up scoring opportunities to teams that can score, you're leaving yourself awful vulnerable and not giving yourself much of a chance to win. 41:07 Was it nice to see that offensive production from Sheehy and Cluse and Riley? 41:11 Yeah, I mean, it's something we need. 41:13 I mean, that line has been coming on. 41:15 I mean, Novak's line has been pretty good offensively. 41:18 Now Cluse's line seems to be coming so we can get a couple of lines to score, and then the trick is to get Vinny's line to jump on board, too. 41:25 So, you know, we have to be the type of team, we've talked about it when the year began, that, you know, we're not going to have one guy get 20 goals, but we've got to have a bunch of 10-goal scores, and I think there's, you know, three or four guys that haven't scored much that have the ability to do that, and that's going to make a big play in how this season ultimately ends up, that if we can get some of these guys that we think can score, we're scoring. 41:46 What is, I guess, the point of emphasis, knowing the fact that after Michigan, there's that big, huge break, and you're going to certainly want to end on a good note. 41:53 Well, you know what, the goal, I mentioned already that, you know, we're one point ahead, and the goal is to be ahead of Michigan when we get out of it. 42:00 We know it's not going to be easy. 42:01 We've played there four times in the Big Ten and have one overtime win, and it's not an easy place to play. 42:07 So we want to continue to build our game. 42:09 We want to continue to get better. 42:10 Obviously, we want to try to get points this weekend and get deep into games and give ourselves a chance to win. 42:16 You know, Friday night, we did that last year when we were there. 42:19 Saturday night, we came out and, you know, we didn't manage to puck very well, and all of a sudden, you're chasing the scoreboard and end up getting beat, I think it was seven, three or four, whatever the game ended up. 42:30 You've been there several times over the year. 42:31 What makes Yoast such a tough place to play? 42:33 Well, I think that the team, they play with great energy. 42:37 Over the years, I've been going there since 95 with the team when I was at Colorado College, and you've got to get through the first, the 10-minute game is critical because I don't know if anybody comes out any harder than they do when games begin. 42:49 The crowd's right on top of you. 42:51 I think it's a great environment to play in. 42:54 I even go back to when I was a player, it was one of the favorite buildings I had on the road to go play in. 42:59 And I feel the same way with coaching because you're playing against an elite program, you're playing against the elite players, really good coaching staff, and so you have to be at your best. 43:09 And it's a great measuring stick. 43:13 Everybody make it through the week healthy? 43:15 Yeah, you know what? 43:16 Knock on wood. 43:17 I mean, we've been pretty healthy, so other than when Steve Johnson got hurt, we've had some guys... 43:24 The timing was good on a couple of our off weeks where we had a few guys that maybe didn't practice for three or four days and could give them some time. 43:31 So we've had that luxury up until now. 43:34 Obviously, the second half of the year, we only have one off week. 43:36 So hopefully we can continue to be healthy. 43:40 Ryan Collins got named to the World Junior Camp roster. 43:43 What do you think his game has changed from last year to this year? 43:47 Well, I mean, for Ryan to be effective, he needs to be in that shutdown type mode, defensive defenseman, be a first pass kind of guy. 43:56 I think he looks like he's a little more comfortable at the offensive blue line than he was a year ago. 43:59 And, you know, anytime you can wear that USA sweater, it's a big deal. 44:04 And, you know, he's made the cut down to nine defensemen, but there's no guarantee, you know, when it's all done, that there's seven. 44:11 I mean, they've already showed that with not inviting guys back that, you know, made the team last year. 44:15 So every year is a new team because, you know, there's different, because of ages, different guys have an opportunity to be on that team. 44:23 And, you know, I don't know if Hannafin will get released by Carolina for that. 44:26 Sometimes NHL teams release guys to play in it. 44:30 So we'll wait and see. 44:32 Hopefully he'll make it. 44:32 And if he doesn't, then we'll look forward to having him at Christmastime. 44:40 All good? 44:41 Thank you. 44:43 You guys have a great Christmas. 44:49 Is that politically correct or wrong? 44:53 I'm just right here. 44:55 Here's Tyler Sheehy. 44:57 What's the secret of scoring goals in this league? 44:59 You're making it look easy. 45:01 I don't know. 45:01 I think just playing with Cotner and Justin, it's just really clicking right now. 45:06 I think being around the net is helping me out quite a bit. 45:12 Coach Lucia said getting around the net is the key to scoring goals. 45:15 What makes it so difficult to transition and start getting goals there? 45:20 I think it's just tougher to score goals when you're not around the net. 45:24 So being there and just getting pucks through either from the D or off a rebound, and like I said, being there is really important for second opportunities. 45:34 Does using the defenseman in the offensive zone create more space for you guys and more possession where you can get chances in the blue paint? 45:40 Yeah, absolutely. 45:41 I think when we move the puck from low to high, it creates space and also creates lanes to get to the net. 45:50 Excited to go out to Michigan, your first Big Ten round trip? 45:52 Yeah, it's going to be a lot of fun, I think. 45:54 The guys have been saying that that arena is a lot of fun to play in, and Michigan's obviously got a lot of tradition as well, so playing against them in their arena is going to be a great time. 46:04 We've touched on this before, but does playing with two experienced guys, includes and Connor Riley, help your transition a little bit? 46:09 Yeah, I think so. 46:10 I think whenever I have questions about just systematic things, they always have a good answer for me. 46:20 Has it been an easy adjustment for you to work with those guys? 46:23 With them, yeah, I think it's been easier. 46:25 Also, early in the year, I was playing with Taylor Camerata and Vinny as well, so it hasn't been too tough systematically. 46:32 I think there's a lot of older guys that are here to help us out. 46:38 Anybody got anything else? 46:45 Connor Reilly. 46:47 Michigan's always kind of a measuring stick in the Big Ten. 46:50 How are you guys preparing for their speed and transition? 46:52 Yeah, we obviously know they're a fast pace and they score a lot of goals, so we're preparing by focusing on managing the puck this week. 46:58 We've got to play with a lot of pace. 47:00 All four lines do. 47:02 They're always a great team and always a great test for us, especially in their building, so we're looking forward to the challenge. 47:07 What is it about their building that makes it a challenge? 47:11 I'd say their fans are pretty intense. 47:12 Just their overall atmosphere. 47:13 You can just feel the tradition in their rank. 47:15 Their fans are right on top of you. 47:16 They do their homework with some custom signs on each players. 47:21 That's always fun to see, but it's just an enjoyable process. 47:25 They only have a great place to do the off-ice warm-up, but besides that, everything's awesome there. 47:30 You've had pretty good success playing against them, haven't you? 47:33 Yeah, yeah. 47:34 Freshman year, I got to go on assist on a series, and that's when I, after that series, I kind of felt a little more confident, a little better moving on. 47:43 And last year in that building, it was fun. 47:45 I remember we didn't, I don't think we played very well defensively, and that's one of the big things. 47:51 We didn't manage to puck very well, so as we've learned, that's one thing we've got to absolutely manage this weekend. 47:58 How important is it, I guess, to go in there and try to get a couple, knowing that the break is going to be long, and you're going to obviously want to end on an uptick? 48:06 Yeah, you definitely want to go on a break feeling good about ourselves. 48:09 At the end of the day, we want to compete them and outwork them, and we're going to have to play smart. 48:13 So you don't want to go on a break not feeling good about yourself, feeling like you left anything on the table, because we're going to get time to rest and recover, so we're definitely not going to leave anything on the table. 48:26 You guys have had some fantastic power play numbers in the last two weeks. 48:29 What's been the difference from earlier in the year? 48:32 I honestly think seeing St. 48:34 Cloud, we watched the RPP, the way they were moving around, and we just realized ourselves we've got to start winning the puck quicker as well. 48:42 I think a lot of times we'd hold on to it maybe half a second, one second, which is way too long. 48:48 Like when you get the puck, it's got to be on your stick and off, some one-touch passes, and when you get a chance to shoot, shooting out the pass in one time is always more effective. 48:56 So the biggest difference is puck movement. 48:59 You kind of bounced around lines this season. 49:02 Do you think you found a home with the Clues and Sheehy? 49:05 Yeah, it was nice this weekend to get rewarded a little bit. 49:07 I felt their line, we created, we're pretty consistent every period with scoring chances, and it was nice to be Clues and Sheehy got a couple goals. 49:18 I felt St. 49:18 Cloud, we were pretty good five on five, we just didn't execute, so it was nice this weekend to get a little bit of a breakthrough, and I think we're heading in the right direction. 49:26 Have you talked to Mike since he got called up? 49:28 Yeah, yeah, I talked to him. 49:30 I saw him last Thursday, it was good seeing him, and he's just happy to be up here and get a part of the experience, and obviously still happy to be a part of the program, and he said practices were intense, they're on him, and he's watching the games with one of the assistant coaches to really learn and kind of analyze the game. 49:50 I hope he bought dinner, now that he's got the big ticket going. 49:52 Yeah, it's bull, eh? 49:56 Anything else for Cotner? 49:59 And finally, here's Ryan Collins. 50:02 Congratulations on the nomination to get to the camp again. 50:04 Thank you, I appreciate it. 50:07 What's the camp going to be like you think this year? 50:09 You know, I think it will be a lot like last year. 50:12 Obviously going to Boston, there's going to be three weeks or three days of really hard, long practices, give you a chance to try to find lines and deep pairs and challenge everyone to see who can play at that high pace that they like to play at at the World Juniors. 50:27 It's going to be a plus knowing that you've been there. 50:29 Yeah, yeah, you know, the experience is good. 50:33 Having been there last year, I know a little bit about what to expect, but it's a new year this year. 50:37 It's a new group of players, and it's a challenge every year to make the team. 50:41 While everybody else gets a break, you don't. 50:43 Is that in some ways a good thing, knowing the fact that how highly they think of you? 50:48 Yeah, you know, always, it's always an honor to play for USA Hockey. 50:51 Every chance I've ever gotten, I've cherished, and put my best foot forward, and I hope to do that again at this camp. 51:00 There's been a lot of changes with the roster from last year to this year as far as invites. 51:04 Have you talked to anybody on the staff or the camp about that? 51:08 You know, I haven't talked to too many guys about it. 51:11 I like to stay in touch with some of those guys that I've played with in Michigan, and I like to stay in touch with them, but they're focused on their seasons, and I'm very focused on ours, so when I get there, I'll chat with them, but for now, it's all business. 51:25 What do you think's improved in your game in the last year? 51:29 I think my confidence, moving the puck, and obviously over the summer, putting size and strength on, being more physical, and being stronger helps me to be confident in my game, in my skating, in my physicality in our end. 51:43 You spent two years in our road to development program. 51:45 What does returning there mean to you? 51:48 You know, it means a lot. 51:49 Every time I get to go back to Ann Arbor, there's good memories, and I'll be able to see some fresh faces. 51:54 I'll be able to see my Billet family, which is nice. 51:56 You don't get to see them too often. 51:58 My little Billet brother's grown up. 51:59 It's kind of scary, but it'll be fun to see him. 52:02 How much free time do you get for that, to see him? 52:07 Not too much. 52:07 Just Thursday night, I think maybe I'll be able to see them. 52:11 Then obviously after the game on Friday and Saturday. 52:14 So I know they'll be at both games, and my parents are going out to stay with them. 52:18 So that'll be fun. 52:23 How old? 52:24 He is a freshman in high school, is here. 52:29 He's hockey and lacrosse. 52:30 He's a big fan of lacrosse. 52:32 So they came from Texas. 52:34 They lived in Texas before I was there, and he played a lot of lacrosse there, and he plays traveling. 52:39 Did he go out on the ice with you at all? 52:43 Did you try any tricks? 52:45 Yeah, we played a lot of street hockey in the front yard. 52:50 We never got the opportunity to go play pond hockey with him, but for sure he's a competitive guy. 52:57 Last weekend, the defenseman got a lot more active at maintaining the offensive zone blue line and getting shots from the point. 53:03 Is that something that was just last weekend, or do you think that's something that's going to keep carrying forward for you guys? 53:08 I think that's something that's going to keep carrying forward and something that needs to be carried forward in order to have success. 53:14 That's something that we stress in our game, but it only happens when we have five guys in the ice that can trust each other, and we were able to do that last weekend. 53:23 And we know we'll be able to do that this weekend when the deer are pinching down, we know there's going to be a forward that's going to reload for them and keep the puck in if it gets by and vice versa. 53:32 So that's a very important part of our game and an important part of hockey, being the fourth man up in the play. 53:38 Do you think it was having so many new guys integrate in the lineup that was preventing that from happening earlier? 53:42 You know, somewhat. 53:45 We don't necessarily look at what these uses are. 53:48 We just want the results. 53:49 And we know that last weekend we were able to do that. 53:53 And we want to, going forward, keep getting that fourth guy in the play and trusting each other. 53:58 All good? 54:02 Thanks. 54:04 Thank you.
