off, but during that week off, the team actually scored some goals and won some games. 0:56 Hammy, a sweep of Northeastern. 0:59 That's better, isn't it? 1:00 Yeah, well, certainly compared to what it was in the first few weeks, I mean, it was nice to see some goals being put up there, even if you want to question the competition's strength a little bit, at least to give some of the guys a little bit more confidence, and hopefully they'll be able to carry that over into this next series. 1:18 Veegs, I believe you were there one of those nights, weren't you? 1:21 Yep, I was there for the Saturday game, the nail biter, and turning into. 1:26 It didn't turn, it didn't start out that way, I'll tell you that. 1:29 I mean, it started out very well for the Gophers that Saturday night, even though it got to be four or three at the end. 1:36 Yeah, they had some good jump early in the first period. 1:38 I thought they were really on top of the game, putting a lot of pressure on Northeastern and they capitalized on their chances. 1:44 I think all week leading up to the game, all the players and coaches had been talking about putting pucks on net and creating second shot opportunities. 1:53 And then that period, they didn't really need them. 1:55 I think there were a couple of snipes and one rebound to get those three quick goals and definitely a good start. 2:01 And unfortunately, they let them back into it a little bit, but a very impressive game. 2:07 Hamme, let's go back to Friday night. 2:08 Obviously, three first period goals kind of set the tone with Novak, Glover and Sheehee. 2:15 And then they kind of coasted the rest of the way with a late third period goal by Fasching. 2:19 But hopefully it just built some confidence with this team because we know they're not that bad, but you gotta start scoring to get any confidence going. 2:33 Well, Ryan, I mean, I think a lot of it for me is just seeing some of these guys that, you know, the fresh faces kind of getting, gaining some confidence, but also some of the guys that we're kind of counting on going into this year, you know, in particular Fasching, seeing Clues get on there, you know, and, you know, adding some offense. 2:51 I just think that it was really important to see some of these guys. 2:53 It's still a work in progress, of course. 2:56 We know it's not gonna be, you know, one week. 2:59 That's just, everything's gonna just click and that's gonna be that way for the rest of the season. 3:03 We're still gonna see, I think, some inconsistencies, but it was nice to see some guys finally kind of break through and hopefully moving forward, like I said, it'll give them some confidence and it'll be more consistent effort for these top two lines. 3:16 And then obviously Shearhorn gets the shutout Friday night, his first collegiate shutout. 3:21 So that's also a confidence booster just, you know, for him. 3:26 Moving to Saturday, just like you said, Veegs, you know, they started out strong, you know, three quick goals in the first four minutes. 3:33 You know, Northeastern gets one back, but you end the period four to one. 3:36 It's looking good at that time. 3:38 Yeah, I think it was really key for the Gophers to get that power play goal at the end of the first period. 3:43 I think special teams are going to be a key thing for this team to be successful. 3:48 You know, they're going to need to score on the power play. 3:51 And already they've given up a few more shorthanded goals than I think that, or, you know, when they're on the kill than they'd like to. 3:58 But it was nice to see them make a play down low and Fashing to step out from the goal line and take advantage of the space that they're giving them. 4:06 Because typically that go for power play has been reliant on shots from the top of the circles and the top of the key there. 4:13 So if they can get some production from him down low by the net, I think it'll make their power play really tough to stop. 4:20 Well, Hamme, like we've said, it does seem somebody like a Fashing did get going that weekend. 4:26 You know, he had three goals. 4:28 So maybe some of the pressure is off for him. 4:31 But Hamme, what about somebody like a Clues? 4:33 You know, he was in on some of the offense, but I don't think he's scored a goal yet, has he? 4:38 No, but I mean, you know, for me, I think it's just more that he's creating offense. 4:42 I don't really have a huge... 4:44 I mean, you know, I mean, of course, you want him to be scoring goals, but I just believe that early in the season, he was like putting a lot of pressure on himself, being that he's the captain and, you know, the top line center and, you know, when the team's not going well, you know, he takes as much pride in that uniform as any of those guys do, you know, maybe even more so. 5:03 So I think he was putting a lot of pressure on himself early on. 5:07 And I'm sure that, you know, breaking through, getting, you know, some points this last weekend, maybe hopefully that'll help him feel a little bit more relaxed and try to kind of contribute a little bit more on a consistent basis. 5:20 And I think that also, you know, the guys are going to be looking for guys like him and Fashing. 5:26 And I'm glad Fashing broke through because a lot of people always kind of get on his case about his consistency. 5:31 And hopefully that this will be a situation where he'll be able to bring that every week now. 5:35 V, is there any concern about, you know, they had those four first period goals and then nothing else for the rest of the game? 5:43 Well, I think if anything, it was a good learning experience for those guys to learn how to play with a lead late in the game. 5:49 You know, it's always concerning when they give up some goals. 5:52 I think Shear Horner would have liked one of those back. 5:55 But he was good in the third period when they needed him to be. 5:57 And I think it was a good learning lesson for all those guys to learn how to play when you're up a goal and another team is taking all the chances. 6:05 And how do you make smart plays to get out of the zone? 6:08 How do you make good line changes? 6:10 How do you maintain your structure? 6:11 I think those are all lessons that they're going to have to learn from as the season goes on. 6:17 Because I don't think this is a team that's going to score five, six goals every night. 6:21 They're going to need to grind out a lot of games and they're going to have to learn how to play those one goal leads at the end of the game. 6:30 Well, I was just glad that they scored some goals, guys, because the one goal in three games was pretty sad, you know, to see eight goals in two games. 6:40 At least it brought some of the people out from the shame that they were having. 6:47 Well, I think that I, you know, the thing that I still feel concerned about is we have not seen pretty much anything out of that third line. 6:54 I mean, Kami and Vinny and those, I mean, those guys can't be going, you know, scoreless this long. 7:01 And then I think they're like both minus six for the season and I mean, you need, I mean, they're going to need to seriously step that up. 7:08 And in particular, when you're playing a third line role, it's not like you're generally going to be going against the other top line. 7:15 So you would expect those guys to be able to contribute more. 7:18 And that's just hasn't happened yet. 7:20 And I think one of the things with Cluice is, you know, he's getting his points on the power play, but five on five, he needs to generate more as well. 7:27 I think on the five on five play, you know, he's pressing a lot to try to make something happen. 7:33 And a little bit he's been shuffled around with different guys. 7:36 And the only line that looks consistent so far has been that Bristad Novak fashion line. 7:42 But Cluice needs to find some line mates that he can trust so he doesn't have to do it all by himself. 7:48 All right. 7:49 It looks like we've got some, a few questions to go over tonight, guys. 7:53 Remember, if you're listening live or even during the week sometime, just use the hashtag GPL Podcast and we'll try to read your question and answer it on the air. 8:02 We've got Todd Johnson wanting to know, will Lucia start keeping the lines the same or will he need to keep tinkering? 8:11 Veegs, he's typically a tinkerer, isn't he? 8:14 Well, he can be a tinkerer, but I think this year's team, he's trying to protect his freshmen. 8:19 If you'll notice, he's trying to put them on different lines with upperclassmen. 8:24 He's trying to get some continuity so far with his lines. 8:28 I don't think we're going to see a lot of tinkering for the next couple of weeks. 8:31 I think he's going to try to get guys settled into rules as much as he can and maybe move one piece here or there. 8:38 I think the Novak-Bristette fashion line, they're going to stick together. 8:43 They're the Coneheads this year. 8:45 That fourth line, it's looked pretty solid. 8:47 I think we saw Michelson and Ryan Raleigh switch spots, maybe just to try to create some competition in the team. 8:54 But I think those other two lines, he's going to have to figure out something. 8:58 And there's not a lot of pieces to move in there. 9:00 There aren't a lot of scorers sitting on the bench, and they need those lines to be scoring lines. 9:05 Well, it's kind of like you said, Hammey, Camerata and Lettere need to do something here. 9:12 Well, I mean, to me, I said coming into the year that I thought, especially Cammy, that he'd be kind of one of those lightning rods in terms of how's the team doing. 9:22 If he was doing real well, I felt pretty good that the team would be doing real well. 9:26 If he's struggling, I felt like the team would probably struggle because he's one of those guys that they brought in, definitely produced offensively. 9:33 They gave him a lot of scholarship. 9:34 And also the expectations are there, and it certainly to this point hasn't been very successful. 9:42 We'll just have to wait and see. 9:43 Obviously, he was kind of a big deal coming in. 9:46 He had a little bit in his freshman year. 9:49 And like you said, he's going to be the lightning rod. 9:52 He's going to be the person people love to blame on the message board. 9:55 So hopefully for our sake and for the team's sake, he turns it around because he's got the skill there somewhere. 10:06 Well, he's going to be a lightning rod player because he's a small guy. 10:10 He's the smallest guy in the team by far, you know, maybe 160 pounds, and he's not going to go win a lot of puck battles on the rink. 10:17 So for him to make an impression for everyone, he's going to have to create offense. 10:21 And that's very visible to everyone watching the game. 10:24 Yeah. 10:24 Well, Raul was a small guy, too. 10:27 But those are two different kind of guys. 10:28 Yeah, I know. 10:29 I'm just saying, you know, he might not be a big guy, but little guys, if you've got a little determination in you, can have a big impact on a game. 10:39 They can be physical. 10:41 They can get under your skin. 10:43 You know, we kind of need Cammie to be that guy, to be that Raul. 10:46 You know, not doing the diving. 10:48 But, you know, be that guy to get under the other team's skin. 10:51 Because, you know what? 10:54 The bigger hockey players, they can't stand it when those little guys are all over the place and hitting them and being successful. 11:01 So we need him to be that guy. 11:03 Well, they may be the same height, but I think Raul's probably got 15, 20 pounds on him. 11:09 Yeah, and I think the other thing is it really comes down to the psychology of a player. 11:14 I mean, I know that anybody can be physical per se, but I mean, he's just never been that kind of a guy that's going to be, you know, doing a lot of chirping and doing a lot of that kind of aggravating, kind of being that guy that everybody loves to hate, you know, out there. 11:28 He just really isn't that type. 11:30 To me, he's always been a guy. 11:31 Even when he scores, he doesn't show a lot of emotion. 11:34 You know, it's kind of just kind of this passive attitude sometimes. 11:39 I mean, I don't know about every single solitary time he's scored, but a lot of times I just notice that there's really not a lot of emotion in his face. 11:46 And it just, I don't know. 11:48 That's one of the things about him that's kind of confusing to me. 11:50 But I don't ever expect that he's going to be that kind of guy because he just doesn't have that kind of mentality. 11:57 Yeah, that's too bad. 11:58 Another question from Todd Johnson. 12:00 He wants to know, will the Big Ten ever be a top tier conference? 12:05 Hammy? 12:06 Well, I mean, we're only talking a couple years into the conference changes, first of all. 12:10 I mean, I don't know why people seem to want to jump to it. 12:13 I mean, if you looked back in the history of the WCHA, if you took little snapshots here or there, it wasn't like it was always the number one conference or maybe even in some cases the number two conference. 12:24 I mean, it just really depends. 12:26 Obviously, towards the end, people remember how strong it was, and rightfully so, but I just think that obviously we didn't expect to see Wisconsin struggle as badly as it has last year and kind of been sluggish this year too. 12:41 We knew the Gophers would probably have a little bit of growing pains this year, but we'll see how that all pans out. 12:48 Michigan is going to generally be pretty good, and I still believe that Penn State in the long run will be a pretty good program most years. 12:55 And we just know that Michigan State and Ohio State, they're going to kind of be up and down, especially I think Ohio State. 13:03 They'll have their occasions. 13:05 So when you're talking about six teams, it's kind of hard to say. 13:08 It really depends on if we're expanding and who's going to be added and what they can bring to the table. 13:13 So I think it's kind of a little too early to say one way or the other. 13:17 Veegs, going off a similar theme, Josh Wendell wants to know, how much is the Big Ten hurting recruiting compared to Ben? 13:26 We were in the WCHA. 13:29 Well, I don't think it's been hurting a ton. 13:31 I mean, you look at the guys who are committed to Minnesota right now, and there are just as many high profile players committed as there were, you know, six years ago. 13:39 It's not Wisconsin, you're saying? 13:41 It's not Wisconsin. 13:42 I think Michigan, you know, they're in the same boat. 13:45 They're doing just as well as they did six years ago. 13:48 The teams haven't performed the top besides Minnesota the last couple of years, but it's cyclical. 13:55 I think these Big Ten schools have a lot of money coming in from the Big Ten network. 13:59 I think they get about a $45 million check every year. 14:02 You know, those big football stadiums help, you know, fund everything in the athletic department. 14:08 So there's plenty of money when they start handing out these costs of being a student, dollars, you know, to students. 14:16 You know, the Big Ten players are going to get more money than players in the NCHC. 14:21 Well, and the other thing, I mean, I don't know that that's going to be necessarily a huge deal, but I think ultimately people need to remember that we haven't exactly been investing a lot in terms of the player amenities and things like that for a while. 14:34 And now, you know, that they're planning on doing some of these things. 14:37 I mean, the recruiting has been perfectly fine. 14:39 It's been as strong as it has been for years. 14:42 I mean, that's not really the issue for them. 14:44 I mean, there's going to be occasions where you're going to lose, you know, or recruit. 14:47 I don't care where you're at. 14:49 But the Gophers, more often than not, the guys that they go for, in particular in state guys, I mean, they're going to get them the vast majority of the time. 14:56 And now that they're starting to, you know, plan on some additional amenities and all that kind of stuff, I think that's only going to help matter. 15:03 So I wouldn't really, I don't think the conference really has a hell of a lot to do. 15:06 I think that's just a lot of fan hype that, in particular, fans from these smaller schools tend to focus on because they don't have a lot of the same kind of attractive amenities or maybe television presence or some of those things. 15:21 So they kind of look for other things to latch on to. 15:24 Well, you know, unfortunately, I think people are just still angry. 15:29 They're just angry at the whole situation. 15:31 They're angry at the ticket prices, you know, for Minnesota. 15:34 They're angry about the Big Ten. 15:35 They're angry about not seeing North Dakota every year. 15:38 I mean, Veegs, you've been to the Games of Mariucci this year. 15:41 So far, obviously, they're not on the level of Wisconsin, but there's at least 2,000 to 3,000 people not showing up each night. 15:51 Yeah, I think it's been a little difficult this year. 15:53 I know they've already had a couple of conflicts with Wild. 15:56 And so when they're at the same time, I think we looked at this last year when we looked at the ticket usage is when the Gophers and the Wild play on the same night, there are more no-shows. 16:07 Whether or not people are more interested in going to Excel and getting all the loud music and light shows or what, but I think that is an issue for atmosphere in the rink. 16:16 So I think at some point they're going to have to figure out how to get resale for tickets easier for season ticket holders to get rid of their tickets and get people in the building or some other solution because they are selling the tickets. 16:30 The ticket prices have gone up, the donation levels have gone up, but they're still selling them. 16:36 It's just the problem of getting people in the building. 16:38 Maybe some of that is not having the old rivalries that people have been used to. 16:44 Well, that's what I was about to say. 16:46 You look at the schedule, the one game against Minnesota-Duluth, it's been Vermont and Northeastern. 16:52 These are not exactly named teams that, at least for local fans, are going to be huge attractions. 16:58 They're not even a Boston College or a Notre Dame or any of those schools that even know they're not necessarily rival rivals. 17:05 At least they have some kind of name attraction to them. 17:09 Vermont and Northeastern, not that they're bad schools or bad programs on the whole, but they're not going to be attractive for a lot of local fans. 17:17 I don't think that that's quite as big of a deal. 17:21 One thing it is, I know the donations have gone up, but the season ticket prices have remained pretty much the same. 17:28 It's really those individual tickets for individual games that have been kind of getting out of control. 17:34 From what I've heard, that was kind of a Norwood Teague thing, that he was the one kind of saying, hey, let's jack up the prices this year. 17:42 I mean, $70 for some of these tickets. 17:46 I'm sorry, that's a bit steep. 17:49 Well, and I think that you have to remember, they're going to have to, if people don't buy, they'll change. 17:56 But as long as they're buying, there's no reason for them to alter things. 18:01 Ultimately for them, as much as I know that they'll talk about wanting a great atmosphere and all that, they're also in a sense a business entity, and they're going to want to make as much money as they can. 18:12 And so you kind of have to balance all that out. 18:15 I mean, I think all of us would kind of wish that your blue collar hockey fans could bring their kids, and it wouldn't be a very expensive trip for a family of four. 18:27 I mean, I think we all deep down would love to see it be kind of more like that type of a fan base, because that's usually the fan base that gets real energetic and lively at games and whatever, as opposed to maybe some of the people who are kind of just showing up to be seen. 18:42 So I know what everybody kind of complains about, but it's kind of like you have to weigh all this out. 18:48 Well, hopefully with better teams coming in soon, we'll see more butts in the seats. 18:54 Obviously, as Todd Mielewski for US College Hockey Online, he just loves to take those opening puck drop shots from Cole Center. 19:06 And boy, Wisconsin, the thing is, Wisconsin might be selling tickets, but they are also selling tickets for $20 to $25, not $60 to $70 at Mariuchis. 19:20 And people keep saying, oh, Barry Alvarez, he doesn't care about hockey. 19:27 Well, eventually somebody's got to tell them, hey, we're losing more money here, and something's got to be done. 19:34 And obviously, the health of the Big Ten depends on Wisconsin. 19:38 Obviously, we love it when they're down, but you're seeing it kind of all around with Minnesota, Wisconsin, people not showing up. 19:46 Wisconsin a little more because of how their team's playing, but people keep bringing it up, but I think it's a legitimate beef. 19:52 People are angry. 19:54 They're still angry. 19:56 And obviously, it's the reality now, but they're not showing up. 20:02 Well, I mean, I don't know if it's an anger thing anymore, just a lack of interest in some of this stuff. 20:08 I mean, I get that. 20:09 I mean, to me, it's like the whole angry point. 20:11 It's like, get over it. 20:13 I mean, it's not going back. 20:15 We're a couple years into it. 20:17 I mean, it's kind of like being angry when a girl dumps you. 20:21 And it's like, OK, I can see being angry at first, right? 20:24 But when it's a year, two years, it's like, dude, get over it. 20:28 You know what I mean? 20:29 She's not going to come back to you, get over it. 20:31 Go find somebody new to date, you know, whatever. 20:33 You know what I mean? 20:34 I know what you mean, yes. 20:36 But you know, just like when I saw that, you know, that Josh Wendelk post, you know, he's asking, is recruiting hurting to WCHA? 20:42 One of his hashtags was BigTenSucks. 20:46 And you know what? 20:47 Yeah. 20:48 It's just a reality. 20:50 Obviously, people need to get over it. 20:51 But you know what? 20:52 They're still pissed. 20:54 Well, at some point, it sort of becomes, you know, if that's all you're going to focus on, I mean, you're never going to enjoy it. 21:00 I mean, no matter how good it becomes, you're always going to be like, well, it's not the same thing. 21:04 It's not like it used to be. 21:05 It's like, well, then why do you still like follow the team? 21:09 Why are you still a fan? 21:10 Because it ain't going to go back. 21:12 And so at some point, you just have to just kind of enjoy what you've got there and make the best of it or move on and find something else to cheer for. 21:19 And to be honest, you know, obviously, we have joked about it, Wisconsin being down. 21:24 But for the fans around here, we need a Wisconsin to be good. 21:32 Well, you want a lively rivalry, certainly. 21:36 I mean, it will always be a rivalry, per se, but it's always going to have added intensity when both teams are on top of their game. 21:43 And if that's not going on, certainly it doesn't help. 21:48 Well, we need the Badgers to be back. 21:50 It might take a couple more years, but you know, the Badgers need to come in and beat Minnesota a couple times. 21:56 Get this rivalry going again, because you know, it might still be a quote rivalry, but until the teams, until Wisconsin starts beating Minnesota consistently again, or it's just competitive, you know, the fans aren't going to care. 22:11 So, it's just the reality. 22:14 Well, I think Grant Bessey makes Wisconsin a competitive team against any team that's not going to score a lot of goals. 22:20 Yeah. 22:20 Because Bessey, especially against Minnesota, he's good for a pointer to every game. 22:25 So, the way this gopher team looks this year, Wisconsin's not going to be a pushover come January. 22:33 Well, that's enough about this current week and some questions. 22:37 We'll be back in a minute. 22:38 A and playing his son, yada, yada, yada. 24:00 Veegs, are you happy this is over? 24:03 Well, I don't know. 24:04 I mean, Notre Dame is one of the premier institutions in the country as it comes to athletics. 24:10 Their football team has always been good, and lately their hockey team has been good the last decade plus. 24:17 And they're another good team this year. 24:19 I always like seeing big name programs come and play Minnesota. 24:24 You know, I much prefer seeing Notre Dame or Boston College or BU as opposed to Northeastern or Vermont. 24:32 So it's kind of nice. 24:33 And then Notre Dame on the plus side, they've got that NBC Sports Network connection too. 24:37 So, you know, some of those games will be televised. 24:40 So it's been a good series, I think. 24:42 They've been entertaining games so far, and I'm looking forward to this weekend's. 24:47 Hammy, what do we need to think about with Notre Dame? 24:50 Obviously, little Mario Lucia is a threat, but what's going on with Notre Dame? 24:56 Well, I mean, they have some good veterans on there, like Fogarty as well, local guy. 25:00 I mean, they look like they've been scoring at a pretty good pace this year. 25:04 So obviously, I think it's going to be important for us to be pretty strong defensively, in particular on the road. 25:10 I mean, it would be nice if we kind of jumped out to a lead early on, kind of like we did this last series. 25:15 I think that would help kind of help the guys with some confidence on the road. 25:20 So I mean, I just think that it's really going to come down to because they're obviously, at least to this point in the year, been a little bit more potent offensively. 25:27 So it's going to really be important for our guys to make sure that they do their back checking. 25:32 The team defense is pretty strong. 25:34 And of course, Shearhorn has to be on his game. 25:37 Just for the folks wondering, you know, Friday night's game is going to be on the American Sports Network, ASN. 25:44 You're going to need to check your local listings. 25:46 You know, I know it's on one of my Dish Network channels. 25:48 It might be on digital over the year. 25:50 We're not sure. 25:51 It's on Nesson. 25:53 I know Nesson's picking it up. 25:55 Talked with Brian Deutsch today from the U and he said he's still trying to deal with ASN to figure out all the channels it's going to be on. 26:03 And he hopes to get something out tomorrow, I hope, because it's not the U that's delaying where this thing's going to be showing. 26:10 It's ASN still trying to figure out where they're going to be showing the game. 26:17 If you don't have that, I know that Notre Dame has the Watch Notre Dame app. 26:21 They have a website. 26:22 You can stream it. 26:23 So either way, if you have a phone, if you have a computer, you should be able to see Friday's game. 26:28 So you're not going to be stuck having to watch a standard definition channel somewhere. 26:36 So you can stream it, do whatever you need to do. 26:38 Obviously, Saturday's game is going to be a national broadcast on NBC Sports Network, so that's good. 26:46 But boy, people are already this week, where's ASN? 26:48 Who's going to play it? 26:50 Oh, jeez. 26:51 Of course, you guys know what it's like for all this TV crap. 26:55 Where is the game for Comcast cable? 27:00 I need to know that. 27:00 I was just thinking about that a minute ago. 27:02 Well, there you go. 27:03 Why don't you find out for us? 27:05 And we'll tell everybody. 27:06 Well, that's what we have people listening for. 27:08 Can't they look that up for us? 27:10 If there's enough people listening. 27:12 If there's enough people listening, what's it going to be on DirecTV? 27:18 What's it going to be on Comcast, MediaCom, all these other cable networks? 27:22 Minnesota State of Hockey usually listens to it. 27:24 He's usually pretty helpful. 27:25 He's got to be a listener, right? 27:29 I don't know. 27:30 All it matters is I get to see the game. 27:32 I don't care about you. 27:34 Well, I know I'll see the game one way or the other, but I haven't had the time to look at what channel that is specifically for me. 27:42 For me, it's 412-28 or something weird like that. 27:48 All I know is I get to see the game, so that's all it matters. 27:53 Veegs, your thoughts on Notre Dame? 27:56 Obviously Mario Lucia, we've got to shut him down. 27:58 Can't let the son's kid win the game. 28:01 Yeah, Don's got a pretty good record against Mario. 28:04 I think he's a 4-1 in these games where Mario's been healthy and playing on the other team, so 4-2 overall. 28:12 So Notre Dame has the chance to even up the series, but Don's got the win in the clubhouse already. 28:19 Notre Dame, fast team, really good counter-attacking. 28:23 Top three lines all have dangerous players. 28:26 One guy to watch, I think, is Dylan Malmquist from Edina. 28:29 One of the few kids to go straight from high school to NCAA. 28:32 He's got four goals already this year. 28:34 He plays in the top nine for Notre Dame. 28:37 And Cal Peterson, Don Lucia called him one of the best goalies in college hockey. 28:42 He said last year Minnesota got to see him before he really settled in, and after that he really picked up his play. 28:49 So good goalie on the other end. 28:51 So it would be a good test for the Gophers and see if they're able to get any speed coming out of their own zone and how well they protect the puck. 29:00 I think Notre Dame is going to be looking to jump any loose pucks and get odd man rushes going the other way. 29:05 Hey, has Lucia used his Twitter at all? 29:09 I've been very sporadic on Twitter lately. 29:11 Is he using his Twitter at all? 29:13 Not too much. 29:15 In fact, the last one I remember is maybe something about Jerry Kill last week. 29:24 It's been a little quiet. 29:25 I guess I haven't paid attention. 29:27 Yeah, he's mainly using it to reach out to people like alums when they do something special in the NHL. 29:33 Oh yeah, you're right. 29:35 Jerry Kill, things like that. 29:38 But he's not going to announce his starting goalie. 29:43 When Steve Johnson is going to come back from injury, he's not announcing that on Twitter. 29:50 Oh, but it's him, remember. 29:53 It's not somebody else. 29:54 It's definitely Don Lucia. 29:57 Hmm. 29:58 Yeah, I'm not so sure about that. 30:01 I'm sure I'll hear about it from Brian Deutsch. 30:03 It's him. 30:03 Yes, it's him. 30:04 You have to believe it's him. 30:06 Well, Don doesn't seem like the guy who's going to be on his phone all the time putting out his thoughts. 30:11 You know, I think texting Brian to maybe tweet something might be a stretch. 30:22 Well, you know, obviously, this is the end of their little contract with Notre Dame and everyone is just going to love it because North Dakota will be back on the schedule next year, folks. 30:36 That's a two-year deal, right? 30:38 Yeah, I really don't know. 30:41 I'm assuming it is. 30:44 I know that they are coming to Mariucci next year for a weekend. 30:48 I don't know which weekend it is yet. 30:50 I haven't been able to get that out of my source, but they are coming here next year. 30:56 It'll be interesting to see if that's just a two-year deal or what they do with that because I'm kind of like with Veegs. 31:04 I kind of like the variety. 31:05 I kind of like having some of these big-name schools here or there. 31:10 Obviously, some of these schools have more of a connection with the past, with the Gophers and others, so you kind of like to see those. 31:19 I have to admit, I kind of like seeing some of the Eastern powers coming in. 31:22 I mean, it's nice to have some kind of a deal with Boston University, for instance. 31:27 They have some good recruits in the next couple years, so that should be a real good team. 31:31 But I just like to see a little bit more of that variety. 31:34 Hopefully, that's something that they continue on with. 31:37 I understand why they need to have the in-state schools be a presence because they want, obviously, Minnesota fans to see more games, at least within a relatively close driving distance and all the travel costs and all that. 31:50 I get all that, but nonetheless, it's kind of nice to see some of these other programs. 31:54 I know they've already kind of signed up for the Icebreaker in a couple years for 2017 up in Duluth. 32:01 Obviously, Duluth's part of that. 32:02 I believe Michigan Tech is part of that. 32:06 Personally, obviously, I like the Minnesota schools, too, to play them. 32:09 I don't know if we need to play, have a series with one every year with all these schools, but like I said, I wouldn't mind seeing CC again. 32:20 Are we ever going to have a series with Colorado College or Denver again? 32:23 I mean, my favorite thing to see would be to have CC, Denver and North Dakota all in the Mariucci Classic. 32:31 Kind of turn that Mariucci Classic into the old WCHA teams that they're not going to see anymore. 32:38 The problem is, how are they going to feel about more seeing conference teams? 32:42 You know what I mean? 32:43 Because that's what they play all year. 32:45 I mean, they're playing those teams. 32:47 So it's kind of like, are they going to like that? 32:49 And they'd never agree to it either because we'd have to have some kind of reciprocity and have to go to those schools too. 32:54 You never know. 32:57 Minnesota's a pretty powerful entity in college hockey. 33:00 Yeah. 33:02 Yeah, you might be able to pull it out with a Denver and a CC. 33:05 I don't know about North Dakota. 33:06 They obviously have a little inferiority complex, and everything's going to have to be equal with them. 33:17 But I'd like to see them throw a UNO schedule for a couple of years or some of these others. 33:26 I'm not saying it's got to be anything consistent, but just spread it out. 33:30 A couple of years with this team, a couple of years with that team, so on and so forth. 33:34 You can make them the old WCHA schools, if that's what you want to do. 33:39 That's fine. 33:40 But just to be able to spread the wealth a little bit and not feel like you're being bogged down with the same non-conference teams quite often, I like that personally. 33:51 Maybe that's why you're only going to see the two of your deals, is because they'll keep cycling teams through in that spot with the home and away series. 33:59 That'd be my hope. 34:00 You know, but I'm not big on all the damn Minnesota schools. 34:07 I mean, we have them in the Minnesota Cup or whatever, that North Star Cup, yeah, that's what it is. 34:13 But you know what, I don't think we need to play a man K to a St. 34:16 Cloud or Duluth or Bemidji every year. 34:19 I would like to see more variety. 34:22 I mean, obviously this year, Bemidji was out for the full series, but I would like to get through this cycle one time and then just say, hey, let's just stick to the North Star Cup and that would allow us to have more variety. 34:36 Because right now, they're kind of trapped. 34:37 They don't have much room for these other schools, like schools out east or Denver or whoever it may be. 34:45 They just don't have the room because they're stuck in this North Star Cup tournament as well as the other games that they play with these other schools. 34:55 Well, I mean, I agree. 34:56 I personally am not a huge fan of seeing all of it. 35:00 But then I also look at it from the standpoint of, okay, like I said, there's the travel costs. 35:05 They're letting the Gopher fans that are local be able to travel just a couple hours to see their team again in another rank. 35:14 If you start playing some teams that are a couple states away or whatever, that's going to be harder for the fans to see. 35:23 You know, some of these away games. 35:25 I mean, I get what you're saying because to me, like I'll be honest with you, I'm a little, and it's not because we've not been having success against them lately, but I'm kind of bored with Duluth a little bit. 35:34 I know that that's probably blasphemous for a fire helmet guy to hear. 35:38 But I mean, I'm just kind of bored of some of these. 35:41 Yeah. 35:42 I mean, it's not that I don't respect their programs and I know the history and, you know, and certainly the rivalry aspect to a degree, but I don't know. 35:51 I just feel like I'd kind of like to see something a little different. 35:54 I'm a little bored with them. 35:55 I'm a little, you know, I don't really feel, especially now that the conferences are different. 35:59 It's not like I feel like any dying need to see them play some of these teams. 36:04 I like that they're on the schedule. 36:05 Don't get me wrong, but I just don't know that I want to see them every single solitary year. 36:11 And that's where, you know, if they could get rid of some of those that could open it up because, you know, right now it's, you know, it's a, you know, they've got a set schedule or whatever it's got to be, you know, to get through these five, you know, the four, actually the four teams that play in the Northstar Cup to get them, or five teams, actually. 36:30 Yeah, it is five that, you know, recycle in and then we play the series and this series and that series. 36:36 I just, I, great idea. 36:38 Keep involved, blah, blah, blah. 36:40 But you know what? 36:40 It's just, you know, Duluth every other year, every three years maybe. 36:46 But let's get some other schools in here because it's going to give you the same next year. 36:50 Well, and like we talked about a little earlier, you know, you get some of these schools like in Northeastern, Vermont, whatever. 36:55 It's like they're not going to be the draws. 36:58 You know, because they're not going to have, like if you have St. 37:00 Cloud at Mariucci, they'll bring, you know, some fans or Mankato, they'll bring fans or Duluth. 37:05 I mean, you're not going to get that from some of these other places and, you know, and obviously if we're not selling out the rink with Total Gopher fans, I mean, that's something you have to keep in under consideration as well. 37:16 So I get, I get what you're saying. 37:19 I agree with that, but I also can understand why they do it too. 37:25 What can you do? 37:27 What can you do? 37:28 At least, you know, like it'll keep some fans happy. 37:30 Obviously, North Dakota's coming back next year and probably the year after, home and home, you know, or not home and home, but one year here, one year there, so that'll make people happy again. 37:41 Yippee skippee. 37:42 Yippee skippee. 37:44 At least we won't have to hear any complaints about them not being on a schedule for two years. 37:52 We'll just have to see. 37:54 I don't know. 37:55 You guys got anything else on Notre Dame or non-conference schedule? 38:01 Just something to look for this weekend. 38:03 Michael Brodzinski talked about the defensemen being more active going after Notre Dame players in the offensive zone as opposed to shadowing and playing passively. 38:15 I think that's something to look for this weekend because Notre Dame is such a high-paced team that if they can be in the offensive zone a long time, it's going to be difficult for the Gophers to maintain their structure. 38:26 Look for that more aggressive play this weekend. 38:28 Was Brodzinski one of the recordings you sent me today? 38:30 Yep. 38:31 It will be on at the end of this? 38:34 Veegs does this every week. 38:35 He goes to the media day down there and usually gets quite a few minutes from Lucia and a few players. 38:41 I usually add it to the end. 38:42 You won't hear it in a live broadcast, but I'll add it on after the podcast tonight. 38:47 So yeah, it's always a nice little bonus that you do for us, Veegs. 38:51 No problem. 38:54 That's all I got, guys. 38:56 That's all I got. 38:58 Check out the renovation stuff if you haven't seen it on GPL. 39:01 I think it's on the home page. 39:03 Yes, I did post the link to a PDF. 39:06 It's got every information about budgets, what they're planning, what's currently there, what they want to do. 39:13 Especially in the club room, it's got three different types of renovations they want to do. 39:18 Tons of stuff there if you want to see that, folks. 39:22 Along with your lovely article. 39:25 It'll be nice to see some updates made to the rink, because it was pretty cool when it opened 20, 25 years ago. 39:35 They're only making the media area smaller, that's all. 39:38 Yeah, more places they can keep us out of. 39:40 They're going to put fans in the press box, dude. 39:44 That was two of the options, having the end where some of the coaches are now, put some fans in there. 39:51 That's a little scary. 39:53 Got to sell more tickets. 39:55 I guess that's what they're trying to do. 39:58 Who knows? 40:00 That's it for this GPL Podcast. 40:03 We'll be back next week and wrap up the Notre Dame series. 40:07 We'll get into the series with Minnesota State Mankato. 40:12 Home and home with that one. 40:15 Until then, thanks for tuning in. 40:42 Well, we had a lot of practices. 40:44 It was kind of nice to have Halloween off, go home and visit the family. 40:48 But yeah, when you know we got a tough team coming up, Notre Dame, they're always good, and we got a nice week off to prepare for them. 40:56 They're a team that you guys have played every year that you've been here. 40:59 What do you see about them? 41:01 Well, they have a lot of guys that can produce. 41:03 I know they have, what, five guys on the team that have about over a point per game, so they have a lot of guys that can dominate, and I think we've got to shut them down early. 41:15 We've just been going hard every day in practice. 41:17 I mean, there's not that much you can really do, but control your effort, and I think everybody on our team has been having a pretty good effort on the ice today. 41:25 How much difference did the win and then the shutout win against Northeastern make for the mood of the team? 41:30 Oh, yeah, it was huge for us. 41:33 We realized that we can play at a high tempo, and I think we just got to control that tempo when we go to Notre Dame. 41:40 You've been seeing a lot of extra time on the ice. 41:42 What does that extra responsibility mean for you? 41:45 It's huge. 41:45 I mean, I know me and Bish have been playing a lot, and it's just nice to have the team on my back, sort of say, but I mean, it's nice having that extra time on the ice to do whatever we got to do out there and produce. 41:59 To be honest, was on your preseason list of personal goals to be a star of the week? 42:07 I don't know. 42:08 I guess we're going to have to find out. 42:12 You're playing a team that in their last game scored eight goals, I think they scored seven before that. 42:16 Is it a little bit of an extra challenge? 42:18 Yeah, for sure. 42:20 Like I said, they got a lot of guys that can produce. 42:22 They got a lot of guys that have a lot of points already in the six games that they played, five games and whatever. 42:28 I mean, we just got to be very, very solid defensively and I think we can come up with a couple of wins. 42:34 We've talked going into that Northeastern series about puck control, short passes and those kinds of things get you a little more up-tempo. 42:41 What's the focus been in the last two weeks? 42:43 What would be the key goals for this team this weekend? 42:47 Well, for the D, I know we just got to make the first pass and then stay up and play with the forwards. 42:51 I mean, that's all we can really ask the D to do is get the puck up the ice to the forwards and they can produce some offense up there. 42:58 And defensively, what improvements do you want to see? 43:01 We've got to eliminate guys early. 43:03 I mean, in the corners, we can't play shadow defense. 43:05 We've got to get into guys and eliminate them off the puck right away so they can't set up on offense. 43:14 May I have one more? 43:15 Any challenges playing with a freshman goalkeeper? 43:18 What's it been like to have Eric back? 43:19 No, he's been awesome. 43:21 He's gave us a chance to win every single night and that's all we can ask out of a goalie like that. 43:24 He's been playing real well. 43:26 Is it easy to communicate? 43:27 Is it something that's still a work in progress? 43:30 Or is he mature in that part of his game too? 43:32 Yeah, I'd say he's pretty mature. 43:33 It was a tough couple of the first games there, but he's figured it out and he's really, really been well. 43:40 Thanks. 43:50 Ready? 43:51 I really like how we played last weekend. 43:53 You know, defensively, we didn't give up a goal all weekend, but save offense and probably didn't score, so. 43:59 Hopefully we can solve that this weekend. 44:00 Duplicate that, yeah. 44:02 Yeah, I'll live. 44:04 What were practices like during the bye week? 44:07 You know what? 44:10 We just tried to continue to work on our puck movement as much as anything during the bye week. 44:14 It's an area we have to get better at. 44:17 When we play more efficiently, coming out of our zones, the neutral zone, then we'll be a better offensive team. 44:24 Try to work on our specialty teams and just try to get better. 44:29 I wish we would have played, quite honestly. 44:31 Sometimes you like a bye week, but it would be nice to continue to play games and keep with some rhythm because we only had one, two weekends all year we played back-to-back games and here it is November. 44:44 You've got so many young players coming in line up. 44:46 Does the schedule of the season allow you to build up those guys' strength and ability? 44:51 Well, I don't know. 44:54 I'd rather not have two open weekends the first half of the year. 44:59 It's kind of disjointed. 45:00 We play five, sit out a weekend, play four, sit out a weekend, play six, and then it's Christmas break, so continuity really won't come to the second half of the season, but we've got so much room to grow. 45:10 There's not an area of our game that we don't need to work on. 45:14 Some days we look pretty good, and other days we don't. 45:17 And that's just trying to get the guys to understand how we need to play, how we want to play, with energy, with pace. 45:25 And some of the young guys, quite frankly, still got to figure out how hard we need to play to be successful. 45:30 You know, with all the practices you've had a chance to do, what have you noticed as an improvement area over the course of the practices? 45:36 I'll let you know Friday night. 45:37 It's about, you know, practice is practice, games are games. 45:41 The game's going to start on Friday night, and, you know, we'll probably be a little bit behind as far as pace of play is concerned. 45:49 We're trying to build some continuity. 45:50 You know, we had a couple guys nicked up that didn't practice for a few days, so we lost a little continuity with our lines during that time. 45:58 But other than Steve Johnson, we practiced today for the first time. 46:02 It actually looked pretty good, surprisingly, that, you know, I think there's a good chance he'll be back and ready to go next weekend, which is good news for us. 46:11 Notre Dame is a team that you're familiar with for obvious reasons. 46:14 You get a chance to watch them this weekend. 46:15 Yep. 46:16 I did. 46:17 You know what? 46:18 We practiced on Friday, and then because of their playing Saturday, Sunday, we went out Friday night late and got a chance to watch a game Saturday in Hartford and Sunday in Brooklyn. 46:28 Good team. 46:29 They're better than last year's team. 46:30 I think they're deeper up front throughout their lineup, and they're scoring more goals. 46:35 On the back end, I think that the two freshman defensemen they have, they brought in their little good stick skills, they skate well, so I think they're deeper on the back end as well. 46:47 Obviously, Cal Peterson's a good goalie as a sophomore. 46:50 We caught him early in his career last year. 46:52 We got to him pretty good on both nights in the series here, but he's as good as goaltenders there as in college hockey, and he certainly proved that as year went on last year. 47:01 So it'll be a good challenge. 47:02 These have been good games the last few years. 47:05 They play the game the right way. 47:08 I think playing these games have made our team better, and it'll be a good measuring stick for us because they're off to a good start with a 3-1 and 2 record. 47:16 Offensively, the score eight goals in Brooklyn and the score seven against Penn State. 47:20 What's the point of emphasis for your defense? 47:22 Well, I mean, number one, you got to take care of the puck. 47:26 They counter very well. 47:28 Their specialty teams have been strong. 47:30 Both their power play numbers and penalty kill are the numbers that you want them to be at. 47:36 But you can't take out, think that any certain line, they don't have guys who can score. 47:43 They've had goals from all four of their lines so far this year, and especially their top three, I think, are pretty interchangeable. 47:50 Even their fourth line is, they're not an easy line to play against. 47:53 They're big and heavy. 47:54 They get the puck down low and kind of grind it out. 47:56 So it's going to be a challenge. 47:58 But I think it will be a good challenge. 48:00 It will give us another read on where our kids are at. 48:03 This is the final year of the four-year playing them on Notre Dame. 48:08 You played there. 48:08 It's your alum. 48:09 Obviously Mario is there. 48:10 Just what has this series meant to you? 48:12 Well, you know what? 48:13 I think it's always fun to go back. 48:15 I mean, for me, we've been back there three times the last four years, including the icebreaker. 48:19 So, I mean, it's been fun for me because all the years I've coached, I mean, I think up until the last four years, I'm not sure I was even back with the team. 48:28 And so it's always nice to go back and see the campus, see the changes that are there, and reacquaint with some friends. 48:36 And then I'm going to go to have coffee Friday morning with my old trainer from my days when I was there, obviously. 48:41 It's always a little bit sad for me to go back now because Lefty's not there. 48:45 And, you know, he meant so much to the program, and they gave me such a terrific opportunity to go to school there. 48:55 And so it's always a little sad for me now to go back and not see Lefty there. 48:59 You know, if you're back for a football game, when you go in his office, and his office was covered with former players, families, children and grandchildren, and everybody, all the athletes kind of would go back and pay homage to Lefty. 49:14 And, but I think it's been good games for us to try to develop our team. 49:20 But as we've talked about, you know, it was a four-year agreement. 49:23 They drop off, North Dakota comes on next year. 49:25 So, you know, replace one ND with another ND. 49:28 So I think our fans will be looking forward to that as well. 49:32 And what emotions are kind of going through for you on the end of this four-game series? 49:35 Has it been exciting to play your son a little bit? 49:38 Well, you know what, he's 22. 49:39 And that's how I look at it this week, that, you know, he's a guy on the other team. 49:43 And you know what, we've got to make sure we get in the shot lanes when he's shooting, especially on the power play. 49:48 We've got to body him. 49:50 And you treat him like any other player that you're playing against. 49:54 So as far as I'm concerned, that's why I said he's not my son this weekend, he's 22. 49:59 Power play, I got a couple of goals against Northeastern. 50:02 Are you happy with the progress? 50:03 Well, I mean, we need to score on our power play. 50:06 I mean, we haven't shown that we're a dynamic five-on-five offensive team. 50:09 So we can't go into games thinking that we can be negative on specialty teams. 50:15 I think it will be awfully difficult for us if we play a game, whether it's Friday night or next week, that we're minus one or minus two in specialty situations. 50:24 We have to at least be even. 50:26 And then we have to continue to see if we can grow our guys. 50:29 I mean, we need some of our veterans to start putting a puck into that and getting chances. 50:34 And some of that's through effort. 50:35 Some of that's through work. 50:36 Some of that's through hounding pucks and retrievals and getting it back. 50:40 So it's just elevating the pace of our play the way we need to play and be harder to play against as a group of forwards. 50:46 How do you feel the Novak-Fashing line performed? 50:50 That was our best line. 50:50 I don't think there's any question that they've been good. 50:53 I think it's continued on through practice. 50:55 It's probably been our most consistent line from an offensive standpoint. 51:00 I think Leon and Hudson like playing together. 51:02 That was the thought process of throwing Tommy in the middle. 51:05 We still have tried to protect some of our freshmen by playing one on a line. 51:09 I thought Tyler Sheehy made some progress in the last series. 51:14 Now we need Conner to get on the board, Justin to get on the board, Vinny and Canyon, some of these returning guys. 51:22 What about Hudson's performance overall? 51:25 He grew. 51:25 I think he played more the way we need him to play. 51:29 Hudson can't forget the type of player that he is. 51:31 Big body, power type forward, not a cute player. 51:34 A heavy player, hard to play against, and puck protection and around the blue paint. 51:38 He needs to get tip goals and rebound goals. 51:42 Get in there and bloody nose alley, we like to call it. 51:44 Score some of those types of goals. 51:46 How do you think Brodzinski and Bishop have responded to the extra ice time? 51:51 They did a good job last weekend playing probably around 24, 25 minutes, which is pretty heavy minutes because we usually like to play all six of our defense when Mike doesn't like to hide the guys. 52:02 But with Jack making the adjustment, getting thrown in that first weekend, we want to monitor his minutes, so to speak, and put him out in the right situations. 52:12 So they're going to have to play more minutes right now. 52:14 But the good news is, like he said, Steve's close to coming back, practicing today, made it through the whole practice. 52:21 So we think that we're going to take the cross off him on Monday. 52:24 He should be good to go next week. 52:26 What are the two wins, I guess, due for Shearhorn's confidence as the competition starts to ramp up with Notre Dame and then kind of escalating through the rest of the season? 52:34 Well, I mean, I think he could feel good about his game because he's been very consistent from the get-go. 52:40 He's given us an opportunity to win, and it's just too bad we didn't. 52:43 I think if your team could get to three goals, I mean, we'd have a pretty good record right now if we'd score three goals every game. 52:50 We would have been in a good position to, you know, maybe almost reverse our record right now or better. 52:56 So he's done his job. 52:57 He's given us a chance. 52:58 I think our guys have a lot of confidence in him, and that's important for a team than to have confidence in your goaltender. 53:04 I mean, he's done an unbelievable job on breakaways. 53:07 You know, we've given up far too many as far as that's concerned, but the guys are confident in him, and now hopefully the rest of our team can do their job and, you know, be a little bit harder to play against as far as the odd man rushes and score some goals. 53:23 Sorry if you answered this already, but was this a good time to have a break? 53:26 No. 53:26 Was not? 53:27 I already answered it in the answers, no. 53:32 We hardly play. 53:33 I mean, we need to play games. 53:35 We just haven't played. 53:38 You want to get into a rhythm of playing, you know, some weekends. 53:40 A lot of times you want a weekend off, more of a second half of the year when maybe you're going to beat up and some guys have some nagging injuries, but we've played one game, two games, two games, then we're off for a week. 53:51 So we need to play. 53:53 We need reps. 53:55 We need reps in every situation in our game right now, and when you don't play, even though you try to simulate it, they want to play. 54:03 They want to practice right now, and so it's hard to look at NHL teams to start complaining if they have three days in a row where the practice is because the guys want to play. 54:13 And we need to play games right now. 54:17 Kind of a non-Northern Dame note, we talked to the High School Hockey Association a couple weeks ago, and you talked about the recruiting model being kind of broken with so many 9th and 10th graders and things need to change. 54:29 What do you think is going to happen out of that? 54:31 I don't know. 54:32 That's a bigger issue than me. 54:42 I can't believe my magic wand on that one. 54:46 Where should I cut?
