This is the Gopher Puck Live Podcast, part of the Pulltab Sports family.
0:11
Speaker 2
Oh, boy.
0:13
Speaker 1
Jûpe making mistakes.
0:14
Speaker 2
I love it.
0:18
Speaker 1
What's your stance on the home side NCAA regionals?
0:21
Speaker 1
That's everyone's favorite topic these days, Brett.
0:31
Speaker 1
I appreciate it.
0:34
Speaker 2
So, Sam, I think you might have gotten kicked out of the game, maybe.
0:37
Speaker 2
Yeah.
0:37
Speaker 2
For being a dirty player.
0:39
Speaker 1
Toe Blake, I'm sure.
0:48
Speaker 2
Dave Haxdell was fired 32 times.
0:56
Speaker 1
Now, here's Júpiter and Vigoe.
1:03
Speaker 1
Good evening and welcome to the Gopher Puck Live Podcast, episode number 311.
1:10
Speaker 1
And it's season 16 of the Podcast, Veegs.
1:15
Speaker 1
We're getting old.
1:17
Speaker 2
We are getting old.
1:18
Speaker 2
And this is going to be an exciting season, I think, with Brett Larson taking control of the Gopher Bench.
1:24
Speaker 2
We've seen a lot of changes this year, and they have a fun schedule to get things going.
1:30
Speaker 1
To say the least, you know, the starting up in Houghton this weekend.
1:33
Speaker 1
I know some people are up there already.
1:35
Speaker 1
Some people are on their way there.
1:37
Speaker 1
Apparently, the fall colors are amazing up there.
1:39
Speaker 1
I've seen a lot of fall colors great up north, so it is the perfect weekend to go up there, except for the hotel prices.
1:45
Speaker 1
Holy buckets.
1:48
Speaker 2
They gotta take advantage of the golden gophers by putting themselves in the black here.
1:54
Speaker 1
They kind of do.
1:57
Speaker 1
So much has changed, even with GPL this summer.
2:00
Speaker 1
I've been doing a lot of programming, and we have done a lot of additions, Veegs, like women's coverage.
2:07
Speaker 1
We've got full women's stuff now.
2:11
Speaker 2
Yeah, we've got Reid on board interviewing Boom May, showing up at the availability and covering the women's team.
2:18
Speaker 2
I think it's an exciting time for that program as well.
2:20
Speaker 2
So it'll be fun to have Reid and see his thoughts over the season.
2:25
Speaker 1
It will be.
2:26
Speaker 1
You know, it took so long just because I relied on commercial type plugins to track sports and it just wasn't good enough.
2:33
Speaker 1
And with the assistance of AI and programming, I was able to get in, you know, two full teams to do a full college kind of system on GPL.
2:43
Speaker 1
We've got a new podcast software.
2:44
Speaker 1
We've got, you know, new tracking of NPI, which there's new things everywhere on the site.
2:51
Speaker 1
Even, even your, your poll, we've made some changes to.
2:54
Speaker 2
Yeah.
2:55
Speaker 2
I mean, AI, maybe not great for a lot of things, but really good for GPL.
2:59
Speaker 2
And I think it's good for the fans that go for hockey to see the benefits of all these tools.
3:03
Speaker 2
Looking forward to seeing that live scoreboard during the season and getting those alerts when they go for score.
3:10
Speaker 1
I see, I see Vonner is already saying, I'm on the right.
3:12
Speaker 1
It's odd.
3:17
Speaker 2
Very perceptive.
3:18
Speaker 2
Our viewers, I love it.
3:20
Speaker 1
Yeah, they're paying attention.
3:21
Speaker 1
That's good.
3:24
Speaker 1
Okay.
3:24
Speaker 1
So we're covering women.
3:26
Speaker 1
You know, we're going to talk about them more on the podcast.
3:28
Speaker 1
You know, we've got Jess Scott on next week, who's the general manager of the Women Gophers, an old acquaintance of ours, Veegs.
3:37
Speaker 1
So it will be fun to have her on the show.
3:40
Speaker 1
Like I said, more things on GPL.
3:43
Speaker 1
We're still going to be concentrating on the men and just mixing in the women as, honestly, we both learn more about the women too.
3:50
Speaker 2
Yeah, it's hard to, you know, take your narrow attention away from the men's program and do both.
3:55
Speaker 2
You know, I've watched less and less NFL, college football, and you know, all that stuff over the years because I've, you know, dedicated a little bit more time to the Gophers.
4:03
Speaker 2
I think I've probably seen the men's team practice six or seven times already this fall, getting ready for the season, just seeing how Brett Larson, you know, differs as a coach compared to previous staffs and just see what they're really emphasizing out there.
4:18
Speaker 1
So he's letting you at practice and observing, huh?
4:21
Speaker 1
No, no questions at all yet?
4:24
Speaker 2
No questions at all yet.
4:25
Speaker 2
I took a picture of Potter dumping in pucks, Luca today, and I got a couple of looks from the bench.
4:32
Speaker 2
I was just like, hey, I just want to show to the people that Luca is aware of the trapezoid and that you're working on it.
4:40
Speaker 2
It's a it's one of those big new rule changes this year.
4:43
Speaker 2
And Luca is a goaltender who likes to handle a puck.
4:45
Speaker 2
So just getting used to not going in the corner to go get it is an adjustment, as we saw during the scrimmage.
4:51
Speaker 2
You know, I think the goalies were kind of like, oh, right.
4:54
Speaker 2
I can't go get the puck there.
4:56
Speaker 1
It's going to be interesting.
4:56
Speaker 1
We're going to get to new rules in a second.
5:00
Speaker 1
But I kind of wanted to get in the Arizona State situation first, Veegs.
5:06
Speaker 1
Greg Powers has now been kind of relieved of his duties temporarily or however it is.
5:13
Speaker 1
Based on what happened, I believe it was August 20th with Matthew Mayich.
5:21
Speaker 1
Have we not learned, Veegs?
5:22
Speaker 1
I mean, we saw it here, what was it, 20, 25 years ago with Corey Stringer, with Heat.
5:31
Speaker 1
How could this have happened?
5:34
Speaker 2
Well, I think it's when you have people in charge who aren't necessarily professionals at this stuff.
5:42
Speaker 2
I mean, Greg Powers has done a lot of good things for Arizona State Hockey.
5:46
Speaker 2
He took them from club to D1, has done a great job fundraising.
5:51
Speaker 2
He's brought a lot of energy to that program.
5:54
Speaker 2
Some people question the way he's done it.
5:56
Speaker 2
But he didn't really come up the traditional way of a division one head coach who's aware of all the policies and procedures and guidance that is out there to manage a program.
6:09
Speaker 2
And I'm sure he's had to take classes and things from the NCAA and compliance over the years.
6:15
Speaker 2
But I think just there's a little bit of a difference there.
6:18
Speaker 2
And unfortunately, one of his players is now severely impacted by those decisions and that lack of oversight.
6:26
Speaker 2
And I always say this isn't a malicious thing.
6:29
Speaker 2
This is just incompetence with running an activity like this where it's dangerous.
6:36
Speaker 2
And it's too bad that it happened.
6:38
Speaker 2
And you know, we talk about accountability all the time in athletics.
6:42
Speaker 2
Someone's going to be accountable for this.
6:45
Speaker 1
And I see Brevon the Shad paid administrative leave.
6:48
Speaker 1
Yes, we know he's still getting paid.
6:51
Speaker 1
I guess, you know, the players are still not happy.
6:54
Speaker 1
They really kind of want the entire staff gone.
6:59
Speaker 2
But we don't we don't know if it's all the players.
7:02
Speaker 2
But I definitely think it's an uncomfortable situation, a situation where they don't feel like they can be honest.
7:08
Speaker 2
They can't advocate for a teammate that they lost.
7:11
Speaker 2
And it's just a tough situation for them to be in.
7:14
Speaker 2
And it's something that student athletes shouldn't be forced to take on.
7:19
Speaker 2
You know, there should be people at the institution that protect the players first.
7:23
Speaker 2
Like they have some responsibility there to protect them.
7:28
Speaker 1
And they've completely dropped the ball.
7:30
Speaker 1
The administration just has.
7:34
Speaker 1
They want independence.
7:35
Speaker 1
They keep saying, oh, they're so wishy-washy.
7:37
Speaker 1
It's like they...
7:39
Speaker 1
I think you posted somewhere earlier today that this has happened at ASU before, hasn't it?
7:43
Speaker 1
Something similar with kind of legal issues.
7:47
Speaker 2
Yeah, when they had Herm Edwards as their head football coach for a while during COVID, he was just.
7:54
Speaker 2
In broad daylight, daylight cheating and conducting these recruiting visits that were allowed.
8:00
Speaker 2
And, you know, if you're the AD of an institution and you know someone's breaking the rules, you either should know or it's malfeasance not knowing.
8:09
Speaker 2
You know, that's that's your responsibility to do that.
8:12
Speaker 2
And they have a history of this at ASU of not following the rules or caring about the rules.
8:18
Speaker 1
It's just very concerning.
8:22
Speaker 1
And the players do feel trapped no matter what.
8:24
Speaker 1
Because if this would have happened months ago, maybe they could have done a replacement.
8:28
Speaker 1
That could have been much more to happen.
8:30
Speaker 1
And then you've got it happening, you know, basically over a month ago now.
8:37
Speaker 1
And they feel stuck.
8:42
Speaker 1
I'm sorry, it took a lot of courage just to do what they've done already.
8:50
Speaker 2
Yeah, it's a tough spot for them, you know, especially like with the roster limits across college hockey now.
8:54
Speaker 2
It's not like there's places for them to go play, you know, with all the major junior kids down to these rosters, a little bit older, there's less spots to go.
9:03
Speaker 2
You know, I'm sure a lot of these kids don't want to turn professional at this stage of their career.
9:07
Speaker 2
They're probably not ready for it.
9:09
Speaker 2
It's just a tough spot to be in.
9:11
Speaker 1
And he was a new player.
9:12
Speaker 1
He was coming in from Clarkson, I do believe, from the transfer portal.
9:20
Speaker 1
It's he's still in a coma, is at least the last I had heard.
9:25
Speaker 1
So they they're not really convinced there's going to be any kind of recovery here, for Veegs.
9:32
Speaker 2
Yeah, I mean, the heat stroke stuff is really dangerous.
9:35
Speaker 2
You know, when your body's, you know, instinctively trying to keep itself alive, you know, it's trying to protect your organs.
9:42
Speaker 2
And unfortunately, that impacts oxygen getting to the brain.
9:45
Speaker 2
And it's serious.
9:46
Speaker 2
And that's why there's all these protocols in place for athletes who train in heat and humidity.
9:52
Speaker 2
And you know, if you're a strength and conditioning coach, the video that came out and you see players responding like that, you're gonna be as tough as you want.
10:02
Speaker 2
That's putting people in a dangerous spot.
10:07
Speaker 1
Well, it's, it's, I mean, can't talk about the whole show on it.
10:11
Speaker 1
But it's just, it's, it's just tragic all around.
10:14
Speaker 1
It's like the players feel stuck.
10:16
Speaker 1
They want to support their their guy.
10:19
Speaker 1
They don't want to lose scholarships.
10:20
Speaker 1
They don't want to lose play.
10:21
Speaker 1
They want to play.
10:24
Speaker 1
But they also want to put their foot down.
10:26
Speaker 1
I mean, they could potentially just not want to play at all.
10:33
Speaker 1
Show up at what they're going to London with this weekend.
10:35
Speaker 1
So, you know, we're not happy with the coaching situation.
10:38
Speaker 1
Whoever's here right now and just not play.
10:42
Speaker 2
I'm sure some of them don't want to play for that coach.
10:45
Speaker 2
I'm sure there's at least a couple of players that feel that way.
10:51
Speaker 1
It's just awful.
10:53
Speaker 1
That's all we can say.
10:54
Speaker 1
It's awful.
10:55
Speaker 1
So, well, let's go to a different thing here.
10:58
Speaker 1
You know, we kind of mentioned some of the rule changes.
11:01
Speaker 1
We were part of a presentation, a webinar today, Veegs, with Piotrowski of the Big Ten, weren't we?
11:10
Speaker 2
Yes, Piotrowski is making the rounds.
11:12
Speaker 2
He's met with all the officials in college hockey.
11:16
Speaker 2
He's met with all the coaches in college hockey and kind of shown video instances that reflect, you know, edge cases for the rules.
11:25
Speaker 2
I think the biggest one being the trapezoid, new to college hockey.
11:29
Speaker 2
And I think college hockey is trying to mirror the rules in the NHL as much as they can.
11:34
Speaker 2
And so for goalies, that means getting used to playing the puck only in those spaces.
11:39
Speaker 2
And I thought it was interesting, you know, he's very clear about, you know, the goalie can be out of the trapezoid, but it's the puck that can't be in there.
11:47
Speaker 2
And I think the key thing also on these reviews, when people look at it, the puck has to entirely cross the lines into those corners for it to be a penalty.
11:58
Speaker 2
So it's almost like, you know, scoring a goal, the whole puck has to be over the line.
12:03
Speaker 2
So if it's a close case, you've got to see a gap between the puck in the line and the goalie playing it before it'd be a penalty.
12:10
Speaker 2
But I think it's going to be interesting for college hockey, should increase the forechecking a little bit, put a little more stress on all those decors, going back on puck retrievals, it's going to be a little bit tougher to pull it off the boards.
12:21
Speaker 2
And there's somebody bearing down on you and the goalie can't set up for you.
12:25
Speaker 1
Well, here is, let me bring up the rule sheet that was shared with us.
12:30
Speaker 1
It was highlighted in orange, that's how it kind of came to us.
12:33
Speaker 1
We'll just quickly go through a couple of things here.
12:36
Speaker 1
Player benches, they want the benches to be the same.
12:39
Speaker 1
They know they can't do much about some of this, but obviously, I think they're kind of setting some of these rules up for the future as well, Veegs.
12:46
Speaker 1
Like, hey, if you build a new building, you kind of need some certain specifics of how you're building it, correct?
12:53
Speaker 2
Yeah, because you'll get into some rings where, you know, the benches for the visiting team are way unusual, like ones in the zone, ones in center-rise, the placements being both players are coming out in the middle of the bench.
13:06
Speaker 2
So it's just kind of weird sometimes.
13:07
Speaker 2
So they're trying to get some standardizations there, especially height too.
13:10
Speaker 2
That's another one.
13:11
Speaker 2
You know, some benches could be really tall.
13:13
Speaker 2
Some could be really short.
13:14
Speaker 2
They want it to be more standard.
13:16
Speaker 2
I thought that was interesting.
13:17
Speaker 2
I know this protective equipment, you know, cut resistant stuff that's coming for next year.
13:23
Speaker 2
So they're putting it in the rules here that it's coming.
13:26
Speaker 2
It gives players maybe a chance this year to experiment a little bit.
13:30
Speaker 2
You know, like Wyatt Cullen, he's one of those players that wears a neck guard.
13:34
Speaker 2
I'm sure after the Brock Faber injury, guys are looking at the ear protection in their helmets, wearing that.
13:41
Speaker 2
We've seen, you know, players get cut, you know, wrists and ankles.
13:46
Speaker 2
So experiment with all that.
13:48
Speaker 2
It'll all be in place next year.
13:50
Speaker 1
Starting lineups, just some more specifics, though.
13:53
Speaker 1
Petrovsky wasn't talking much about it, but when we were texting back and forth, you mentioned there might have been a Penn State, Minnesota thing with starting lineups last year.
14:00
Speaker 2
I didn't have a chance to go back, but like there was a delay with like an opening goal early in the game.
14:05
Speaker 2
And I felt like Penn State was challenging Minnesota's starting lineup.
14:10
Speaker 2
And it ended up not costing Minnesota a goal, but it was just something that the coach was trying to call on.
14:18
Speaker 2
Always fun.
14:19
Speaker 1
True.
14:19
Speaker 1
Some of those coincidental penalties will have a bit more on that.
14:24
Speaker 1
I've got a sheet on that.
14:25
Speaker 1
But it's interesting.
14:27
Speaker 1
It's kind of talking about the scenario like what five minutes are under in the third period or over time.
14:33
Speaker 1
Let's say 18 gets a five minute major and the other one gets a minor.
14:38
Speaker 1
Well, if you're with two minutes left in the game, you're not going to see any of that power play in the current rules.
14:47
Speaker 1
But under this one, they're kind of changing here.
14:49
Speaker 1
It's like, hey, if you're going to have a three minute advantage, that's going to start first.
14:55
Speaker 1
In more in line with what the NHL does, I believe, Veegs.
15:00
Speaker 2
No, I think this is a new rule for hockey.
15:03
Speaker 2
They just the coaches just think, you know, this is a fair way to do it.
15:07
Speaker 2
If someone gets a major penalty, you should get that before regulation.
15:10
Speaker 2
No, I think one of the reasons is because regulation wins mean so much in college hockey.
15:15
Speaker 2
And so it makes a lot of sense that you get the advantage right away rather than have it bleed in overtime where the win loss doesn't mean nearly as much.
15:24
Speaker 1
And you know, there's more some definitions of misconducts and things and whatnot here.
15:31
Speaker 2
I think one thing on as the major penalties.
15:34
Speaker 2
Oh, yes, I think we saw a lot last year in college hockey where the refs would stop play to review something that happened in the game for a major penalty.
15:43
Speaker 2
And now the only way they can do that is if there's a penalty called.
15:46
Speaker 2
Because I remember a lot of times last year, they'd stop play.
15:49
Speaker 2
It'd be like a two minute plus delays or look at something.
15:52
Speaker 2
And then they come back and they say, after video review, no penalty on the call.
15:58
Speaker 2
Great.
15:58
Speaker 2
We just wasted all this time for that.
16:00
Speaker 2
So now they have to at least see a penalty before they would review it.
16:04
Speaker 1
And I believe one of them is now you have to have multiple punches to be considered a fight.
16:12
Speaker 1
Unless it's, I'm guessing unless it's like a, well, even a sucker punch, I think they were calling even just a minor or something like that.
16:18
Speaker 2
Well, it would have to be a true sucker punch rather than just like throwing one punch.
16:23
Speaker 1
You know, the old little hand in the fit.
16:25
Speaker 1
Yeah.
16:25
Speaker 2
Yeah.
16:26
Speaker 2
They just want to say, we all know what fighting is.
16:30
Speaker 2
When there's fighting, we're going to call it that.
16:32
Speaker 2
When it's not, that's just roughing or misconduct.
16:36
Speaker 1
You talk about the goalkeeper privileged area and the new trapezoid, Veegs.
16:42
Speaker 1
Looks like they're doing the trapezoid in next season for the other divisions of hockey.
16:48
Speaker 1
But like you mentioned, that's going to be an interesting thing for players or Angolis to adjust to.
16:57
Speaker 2
Yeah, I'm sure a lot of D3 rinks don't have a Craig Floor on hand to make sure that the strap gets painted correctly.
17:03
Speaker 2
So give them a little extra time to deal with that.
17:06
Speaker 2
But I think that's probably the biggest thing people will notice this year in college hockey for rules.
17:11
Speaker 1
And there's the fighting role about more of a hitting the opponents multiple times, headbutting kind of still the same.
17:19
Speaker 1
Checking from behind mentions removing in open ice from checking from behind rule.
17:24
Speaker 1
I think they're kind of going more, hey, it's more of a charge.
17:28
Speaker 1
If you check from behind in open ice, is that what they're kind of saying there?
17:31
Speaker 2
Yeah, because it was written that way that checking from behind still applied in open ice.
17:36
Speaker 2
But really, the checking behind penalty is enforced for guys along the boards, because that's the dangerous area where if you get hit from behind and your head goes in the boards, that's when you have the paralysis issue stuff come up and that they want kind of no margin for error on that.
17:53
Speaker 2
Don't do that in open ice.
17:55
Speaker 2
You know, if you hit someone in a violent way, that's a penalty.
17:57
Speaker 2
It's probably a different one like interference or charging.
18:02
Speaker 1
All righty, then throwing throwing the stick, Veegs.
18:07
Speaker 1
I wonder where this may have come from unless it happened some other time.
18:12
Speaker 2
Players only throw your stick if it's the game winning goal in overtime.
18:15
Speaker 2
Do not do it against North Dakota, especially when you think it might poke the bear and the fighting hawks might come back from a from a deficit.
18:24
Speaker 2
Do not throw your stick in the air at that point.
18:26
Speaker 2
Wait till you end the game.
18:31
Speaker 1
The old pit look rule, I think that is a high sticking rule.
18:36
Speaker 1
Actually there's kind of a note here actually about the women.
18:40
Speaker 1
They're going full high stickings, okay, no matter what this season as a test, aren't they?
18:47
Speaker 2
Yeah, and the WCHA, they're going to try correct.
18:49
Speaker 2
Yes.
18:51
Speaker 2
We'll see how that goes.
18:52
Speaker 2
I don't know what to expect there.
18:54
Speaker 1
That will be interesting.
18:55
Speaker 1
You know, some of the delay a game has to do with some puck shots.
19:00
Speaker 1
You guys can read it here.
19:01
Speaker 1
Pause it and read it if you want.
19:04
Speaker 2
The big thing is if the puck is shot in from the other side of the center ice, the goalie has to play it.
19:09
Speaker 2
Correct.
19:10
Speaker 2
You can't freeze it.
19:12
Speaker 2
If you freeze it, it's like an icing, essentially, and you have a face off in your own end.
19:17
Speaker 2
And you can't change.
19:18
Speaker 2
And that'll be weird, I think that'll be different.
19:22
Speaker 1
Spitting disqualification.
19:24
Speaker 1
Don't be spitting, folks, a lot of the kind of face off rules.
19:28
Speaker 1
They're just gonna be a little more stricter about the order of how a player is supposed or how an off how a face off should go.
19:37
Speaker 2
It's like they had kind of just distinct like steps of how they Yeah, they're just trying to mirror the NHL as much as they can on the stuff squaring up getting your stick flat on the ice and not cheating.
19:49
Speaker 2
So we'll see how they apply it.
19:52
Speaker 1
Offside rule, if you come in backwards, you need to have more distinct control of the puck.
19:57
Speaker 1
It's kind of a judgment call.
19:59
Speaker 1
Hand pass, now permitted in the defensive zone, Veegs.
20:03
Speaker 2
And it's got to be initiated and completed in the defensive zone, but you can do it.
20:09
Speaker 1
Alrighty then.
20:12
Speaker 2
Can we get to the embellishment?
20:13
Speaker 1
I'm sorry, what?
20:15
Speaker 2
Can we get to the embellishment?
20:16
Speaker 2
I think that's my other favorite one of the rule changes.
20:20
Speaker 1
Different timeout rules.
20:22
Speaker 1
Yeah, one thing like if there's an icing now, or if there is, like you said, a frozen puck with the goalie from center ice, you cannot call a timeout to negate an icing.
20:35
Speaker 2
And rest your players.
20:36
Speaker 2
No, no rest.
20:37
Speaker 2
You're going to have to force that face off with those guys out there.
20:42
Speaker 1
Okay, where is the, where is the embellishment here somewhere?
20:45
Speaker 1
Did I not see it?
20:46
Speaker 1
Do we go past it already?
20:48
Speaker 2
I don't think we've gone past it.
20:49
Speaker 2
I just feel like we're getting a little on the weeds on the rules and the embellishment is one of my fun ones here.
20:56
Speaker 2
I don't think it's in here as a rule change.
20:57
Speaker 1
I think it's point of emphasis.
20:59
Speaker 1
Correct.
21:01
Speaker 2
So Steve Piotrowski was very upset with one video of a player who basically got hit but didn't get hit hard and he almost launched himself into the glass and then started rolling around on the ice and he's like this has no place in our game.
21:19
Speaker 2
We are just telling our officials call this.
21:22
Speaker 2
If you think a player is, you know, trying to earn a call or something, feel free to make the call.
21:29
Speaker 2
Even if there was a penalty on the play, still call this embellishment penalty, which I love because I want to get that out of our game.
21:37
Speaker 2
This is not going to be World Cup soccer with people rolling on the ground.
21:41
Speaker 2
I almost want to see that in a game where someone maybe does get hit hard and they're just selling it too much.
21:48
Speaker 2
I want to see the minors called on this because I hate that part of the game.
21:52
Speaker 1
I am with you on that.
21:55
Speaker 1
He didn't want to blame anybody, but he was showing a video between Ohio State and Penn State when the Penn State players went into the boards and flopped.
22:03
Speaker 1
And it did look bad.
22:05
Speaker 1
And he's like, I'm not trying to be accusatory here.
22:08
Speaker 1
Here's the example.
22:09
Speaker 1
I hate this.
22:14
Speaker 1
Just a quick reference here, the video replay basically on home.
22:19
Speaker 1
You know how it all looks.
22:22
Speaker 2
And maybe we'll put this on the site.
22:24
Speaker 1
I'm going to put I'm going to put this on the site.
22:27
Speaker 1
I'm also going to put the full rules book on the site that was made available to us as well.
22:34
Speaker 1
A lot of this stuff is the same.
22:37
Speaker 1
Piotrowski did talk more about interference, goalie interference.
22:42
Speaker 1
What was it?
22:43
Speaker 1
Something about the Western Mission.
22:46
Speaker 1
Yeah.
22:47
Speaker 2
Yeah, you can challenge those.
22:49
Speaker 2
I don't think you could all the time before.
22:52
Speaker 1
Yep.
22:54
Speaker 2
Just the other thing, one time out, one time out per game doesn't.
22:57
Speaker 2
Yeah.
22:58
Speaker 1
And you don't get one in overtime unless it's a full overtime.
23:01
Speaker 1
They had some graphics here on some of the coincidental penalties and some and some, you know, examples.
23:07
Speaker 1
It's essentially just saying, Veegs, hey, you know, in the typical scenario, like you look at A3 and B4 there on the bar graph, you know, if it's within five minutes at the end of the game, you know, two minutes left in the game, you're not going to get a power play at all.
23:24
Speaker 1
So they're they're kind of doing a differential like say, hey, you're going to get that if it's a two minute and a five minute, you're going to get that three minute power play up front.
23:37
Speaker 2
So yeah, which seems right to me, I'm on board with that.
23:42
Speaker 1
So that's kind of some interesting things they showed us.
23:45
Speaker 1
Let me see, what was this?
23:45
Speaker 1
Oh, just some of the timeouts things, you know, hey, timeout TV timeout under 13 under seven.
23:51
Speaker 1
You know, you know, you can't call a timeout back to back or you can get some weird little things here.
23:59
Speaker 2
I'm saying you can't have you can't have back to back timeouts.
24:02
Speaker 2
So someone took a timeout.
24:03
Speaker 2
You can't take another one.
24:04
Speaker 1
So or like the other two takes about you cannot take a timeout back to back.
24:09
Speaker 2
Just to speed up the game.
24:10
Speaker 2
Like Big Ten has done a really good job of speeding up their games.
24:13
Speaker 2
I think the average last year was two hours and 11 minutes.
24:17
Speaker 2
And some of that's the TV timeout.
24:19
Speaker 2
Some of that's intermission.
24:20
Speaker 2
But also sometimes it's like this review stuff.
24:22
Speaker 2
The national average last year was two hours and thirty nine minutes for a hockey.
24:27
Speaker 1
Yes, it was.
24:29
Speaker 2
Let's keep it as close to two hours as we can.
24:32
Speaker 2
And let's get these games on TV and make it fun so you can have a six o'clock and eight o'clock game and they can both start on time.
24:39
Speaker 2
You will never be able to stop basketball because those games always run over.
24:43
Speaker 2
But hockey we can count on.
24:46
Speaker 1
That is true.
24:47
Speaker 1
That is true.
24:47
Speaker 1
But it was fun to see some of the examples here from Piotrowski today about all the different scenarios they were showing videos, things like that.
24:58
Speaker 1
I thought that the interesting one was though, the no change on, you know, the shooting it in almost has a nice thing, a goalie stops it, but a lot of players are coming in.
25:08
Speaker 1
He freezes it and it's a no change.
25:11
Speaker 1
Face off would have been the face off, blah, blah, blah.
25:12
Speaker 1
But it's you cannot change now.
25:15
Speaker 1
I like that.
25:17
Speaker 2
Yeah, I think with the trapezoid and that, like they're trying to speed up the game a little bit and add a little value to the forecheck.
25:24
Speaker 2
And that's, that's hermetic hockey when you have that.
25:28
Speaker 1
So we talked about this back on our end of the show, season finale last year, the new team, new players coming in, new coaches.
25:38
Speaker 1
Now they've had some chances to gel together.
25:44
Speaker 1
I know you even saw Wyatt Cullen, boy, you're like, he's looking good, but he kind of struggled at first at practice.
25:51
Speaker 2
Obviously, it's a new thing.
25:52
Speaker 1
He was 17 years old.
25:53
Speaker 1
He just turned 18.
25:55
Speaker 1
Tell us how things are coming together from your point of view with practice in the lines.
26:01
Speaker 2
Well, I think one thing for Brett Larson is he is very much teaching and putting structure in place with this team.
26:09
Speaker 2
You know, that's one of the things he wants to make his mark on this program.
26:14
Speaker 2
I feel like with Moscow, there's a lot of freedom for a player.
26:18
Speaker 2
And I thought that was really attractive to players that wanted that.
26:22
Speaker 2
You know, you were going to have space to make plays.
26:25
Speaker 2
I think Brett is being a little bit more direct with how he wants the game played with these guys.
26:30
Speaker 2
And so when I watch practice, he is quick to stop a drill.
26:35
Speaker 2
If something, especially one of his key habits isn't executed, he's going to stop it, he's going to teach it, and we're going to come back to it.
26:44
Speaker 2
And when I talk to him kind of towards the end of camp, he basically told me, he's like, I'm going to hold these guys accountable.
26:52
Speaker 2
And if they're not doing the things that we really harp on every practice, it's going to be evident to these guys.
27:00
Speaker 2
And they do a lot of video review now.
27:03
Speaker 2
Guys, when they come in the morning, they get basically scored on how they're doing in practice.
27:09
Speaker 2
After practice, the coaches are reviewing the practice film and going over what they're executing and figuring out how they can fix things faster.
27:18
Speaker 2
And I think we have a lot of guys on this coaching staff for the Gophers this year that are really invested in making that mark and creating a little bit more structure for the team.
27:29
Speaker 1
Well, before we get into some of the new faces, one thing you mentioned to me during the scrimmage the other night, which was fun.
27:37
Speaker 1
I hope they do it again and make more of a big deal out of it.
27:42
Speaker 1
You've been hearing things about Javon Moore, like getting a little more serious about working out and building strength and it might be a little different on his skates this year.
27:55
Speaker 2
Yeah, a lot of the things I heard about Javon previously was that he had really high moments.
28:01
Speaker 2
You know, he could really impact a play with a flash or like a burst of 10 or 15 seconds of strength, speed and skill all showing up.
28:12
Speaker 2
But I think one of the things with his game is very inconsistent.
28:15
Speaker 2
You know, after that brief moment of exciting play, it would dip down quite a bit.
28:21
Speaker 2
And I guess over the summer, he really put in the time and got in better hockey player shape.
28:28
Speaker 2
You know, I've read all kinds of stuff about hockey players, strength and conditioning.
28:32
Speaker 2
You know, they think, oh, I've got to run the mile in this, or I've got to be able to squat this.
28:37
Speaker 2
It's like, well, hockey players, they need this like 45 second burst and recover.
28:42
Speaker 2
They need 45 recover.
28:44
Speaker 2
If you can do that 20 times in two hours, you can be a really effective hockey player.
28:50
Speaker 2
And I heard about his offseason.
28:52
Speaker 2
He really got himself in the shape where he's going to be able to do that this year.
28:56
Speaker 2
So I'll have the strength, conditioning capacity to give that kind of effort each night.
29:01
Speaker 2
And he's got some of the explosive numbers that Cal Deitz has never seen before.
29:05
Speaker 2
I'm going to be writing an article for USCHO this fall that kind of talks about some of these impressive athletes in the Big Ten.
29:14
Speaker 2
And Javan's going to be one of them.
29:16
Speaker 2
You know, some of his numbers for vertical jump and broad jump and explosive speed is just, you know, off the charts for a hockey player.
29:25
Speaker 2
And so I'm looking forward to seeing it translate to the season as a whole.
29:29
Speaker 2
And I think he's going to be in a good spot.
29:32
Speaker 2
I've seen him on a line with Cullen and Kwasnicka a couple of times.
29:36
Speaker 2
It looks like that could be a really fun group to watch.
29:39
Speaker 2
It all kind of depends on how Wyatt Cullen develops as a center, if that can stick.
29:44
Speaker 2
But it's something I think the coaching staff is looking for, because, you know, if Javan's engaged for a whole game, he's going to create a ton of space for Wyatt Cullen and Wyatt Cullen, as I said to you earlier, you know, I thought his first couple practices with the team, little cautious, you know, not quite sure how to impact the game by the end of camp.
30:04
Speaker 2
He was looking a little bit like LJ Mooney, a little bit like Quinn Hughes, you know, that ability to get a puck, find space, beat a guy and make a play.
30:14
Speaker 2
And when you can do that on the ice, all of a sudden you've turned it from five on five into four on three.
30:20
Speaker 2
And you're looking to create a band opportunities.
30:22
Speaker 2
And it looks like the Gophers have a couple guys who are able to do that this year.
30:28
Speaker 1
So the inter squad scrimmage was this past Saturday night.
30:31
Speaker 1
I thought it was just fun, a little disorganized, but it's the first time they've ever done it.
30:35
Speaker 1
I think hopefully it becomes a thing, as a lot of us like to say.
30:41
Speaker 1
Some of it was also so the players could get used to some of those new rules, like the trapezoid and things like that.
30:49
Speaker 1
But it did seem like they were having a little fun out there, Veegs.
30:52
Speaker 1
They get to do some shootouts.
30:54
Speaker 1
They kind of started five on five, and then they did five on three for a long time, and five on four.
31:00
Speaker 1
And they really did just work on a lot of the basics, really.
31:06
Speaker 2
Yeah, you know, new coaching staff, a lot of new guys on the team.
31:09
Speaker 2
You know, when you have a long camp, you kind of have to learn what a game day is like versus just a normal day.
31:16
Speaker 2
So they wanted to go through that process.
31:18
Speaker 2
And I think also Gophers have had some bad luck over the years with the exhibition to start the year.
31:25
Speaker 2
You know, there's been a couple of guys who have gotten dinged up pretty good in that exhibition.
31:30
Speaker 2
And just avoiding that maybe is a good thing going forward for Minnesota.
31:35
Speaker 2
You know, you don't want to have these grudges that come out in these games.
31:39
Speaker 2
You know, sure, it's great to play Bemidji State or one of those Canadian colleges.
31:44
Speaker 2
But I think the Inner Squad maybe is a easier way to get into it.
31:48
Speaker 2
And you know, a little disorganized here and there.
31:51
Speaker 2
But you know, the guys are working through it.
31:53
Speaker 2
The lines are a little mixed up, too.
31:56
Speaker 1
It was, but when I say disorganized, it's like we weren't really sure what's going to happen next.
32:00
Speaker 1
So they're going to do another thing.
32:01
Speaker 1
Oh, they're going to clean the ice.
32:02
Speaker 1
And then they're going to do this.
32:03
Speaker 2
So more like flash the schedule at one point.
32:06
Speaker 2
But it was like they weren't quite following it exactly.
32:09
Speaker 2
It would have been maybe good to have a script.
32:11
Speaker 2
That's like you go to see a play.
32:12
Speaker 2
It's like I want to see act one, act two, you know, intermission, you know, know what I'm getting into.
32:17
Speaker 1
But it's the first time.
32:18
Speaker 1
So I'm thinking I would love to see them continue to do it.
32:23
Speaker 1
LJ.
32:23
Speaker 1
Mooney warmed up out there.
32:25
Speaker 1
He didn't play like Larson said.
32:29
Speaker 1
Some guys are banged up.
32:30
Speaker 1
Taron Smith probably not going to be playing until he was second, maybe end of October, early November.
32:37
Speaker 1
Larson.
32:39
Speaker 2
Yeah, that's what it's looking like for Taron Smith.
32:42
Speaker 2
You know, he had that shoulder injury that needed surgery after his major junior season.
32:48
Speaker 2
And he missed he missed the Memorial Cup so he can have surgery and make it for Minnesota and come back as soon as he can.
32:56
Speaker 2
He's on the ice this week with the team.
32:58
Speaker 2
He hadn't really been much before, just kind of going through like warm ups.
33:02
Speaker 2
But now he's starting to work himself in.
33:04
Speaker 2
I saw him working like scout power play for a little bit today.
33:08
Speaker 2
Hopefully they get him end of October, early November.
33:12
Speaker 2
They're going to need him, I think, one edition of the blue line.
33:16
Speaker 2
LJ, I'm not sure if we're going to see him this weekend.
33:20
Speaker 1
Interesting.
33:22
Speaker 2
I don't think he's skated with the team in practice since coming off the ice Tuesday.
33:29
Speaker 2
I know he's skated a little bit and he's skated in warm ups, but he wasn't on the ice today.
33:37
Speaker 2
That's kind of a question mark.
33:39
Speaker 2
Strahl is another player that is probably a question mark for this weekend.
33:43
Speaker 2
He hasn't been on the ice since last Tuesday as well.
33:48
Speaker 2
So a couple couple Knicks there that they're going to be dealing with.
33:53
Speaker 1
Always happens.
33:55
Speaker 1
Always happens.
33:56
Speaker 2
Well, you know, Brett said that, you know, you want a team that that competes.
34:00
Speaker 2
And you know, he said, you know, last Tuesday, you know, there was a nearly a scrap or two in practice and he's like, if you have a team where that never happens, they probably don't want it enough.
34:11
Speaker 2
And right now, Brett's going to be scratching guys that would usually be used to playing.
34:17
Speaker 2
And he's going to have some decisions to make.
34:19
Speaker 2
And I think a lot of it's going to come down to some of that accountability stuff.
34:23
Speaker 2
And with Lars, you know, one of the accountability things is being aggressive, being competitive for puck battles.
34:29
Speaker 2
Now that's the one stat he's looking at this weekend is, are we winning our share of puck battles that we want?
34:37
Speaker 2
That's the number one focus for them.
34:41
Speaker 1
Evan Murr, poor guy gets put on second team, all Big Ten to start the season, and he's a two time, you know, all American.
34:51
Speaker 1
Tough conference, Big Ten, but he does look pretty smooth out there, Veegs.
34:58
Speaker 2
He is just what the doctor ordered with this team.
35:02
Speaker 2
He looks really good at the top of power play, really confident on the breakout.
35:06
Speaker 2
He and Axel Löftgren have been a nice pair throughout camp.
35:11
Speaker 2
They just kind of complement each other very well.
35:15
Speaker 2
I think having him as a right shot D will really help Minnesota this year with their breakout and their transition.
35:21
Speaker 2
You know, this is a team that wants to get up the ice quick, and he's a player that can make that happen.
35:26
Speaker 1
Who else is standing out for you?
35:29
Speaker 1
Well, let's just start with the incoming transfers.
35:31
Speaker 1
Anyone standing out besides Evan Murr?
35:35
Speaker 2
I think Burnevik is standing out as someone who's going to be able to score a lot of goals.
35:40
Speaker 2
He doesn't look like the smoothest skater at times.
35:44
Speaker 2
Someone is asking me, is he kind of like Matthew Wood?
35:46
Speaker 2
And I was like, no, Wood was a very technically strong skater.
35:51
Speaker 2
He just didn't look very quick out there at times because he's a big lumbering guy.
35:56
Speaker 2
Burnevik isn't quite as smooth, but somehow he's able to get his stick in a spot to smoothly handle pucks and get them off.
36:04
Speaker 2
And I think that's a player that's going to make plays for them.
36:07
Speaker 2
Looks good on the power play.
36:09
Speaker 2
He's going to be good in zone.
36:10
Speaker 2
He just needs the right line mates, I think.
36:14
Speaker 1
Von are saying somebody said on XM, when he will play this weekend.
36:19
Speaker 2
I mean, we'll see.
36:20
Speaker 2
I mean, he could easily play.
36:21
Speaker 2
They're flying out to Michigan Tech tomorrow.
36:24
Speaker 2
I'm just saying this is a guy who hasn't played with the team much of the last week.
36:29
Speaker 2
So, you know, he's a big part of what they're doing.
36:33
Speaker 2
And when I look at the power play groups that they're putting together, you know, it's not like they're holding a spot necessarily for him.
36:40
Speaker 2
We'll see.
36:43
Speaker 1
The power play was pretty good last year.
36:45
Speaker 1
Probably going to be even better this year.
36:47
Speaker 1
But everyone's going to ask about these things.
36:50
Speaker 1
Faceoffs and penalty kill.
36:53
Speaker 1
The worst in the country, basically.
36:56
Speaker 1
Or first or second from first from worst.
37:02
Speaker 2
Yeah, I think the power play is going to be just fine.
37:04
Speaker 2
You know, I look at the guys who can play on top, you know, Cullen, Mooney, Murr, Hendricks.
37:11
Speaker 2
I've seen Löftgren up there.
37:13
Speaker 2
They all look like capable players running the top of power play.
37:17
Speaker 2
I think they're going to have good players around the net, like Bernevik, Zemur, Humphreys, you know, a player I haven't talked about yet.
37:27
Speaker 2
Ludke, Javon Moore, you know, those are your kind of net front guys who will create chaos there and also win those second chances.
37:36
Speaker 2
And I talked about this a lot the last couple of years.
37:39
Speaker 2
When the Minnesota power play is effective, it's because they get second, third and fourth chances in one possession in the zone.
37:47
Speaker 2
You know, when you're a one and done power play, it's very easy to defend.
37:51
Speaker 2
You know, I think when they're really overly reliant on snugger roots one timer, that power play didn't work, you know, because they would just take that away.
38:00
Speaker 2
You need other threats and you need guys that could win those second pucks and create chaos.
38:05
Speaker 2
Penalty kill.
38:06
Speaker 2
I mean, we will see.
38:07
Speaker 2
It was a disaster last year.
38:09
Speaker 2
And Steve Miller ran very effective penalty kills for the whole junior team.
38:15
Speaker 2
It just didn't translate at Minnesota.
38:17
Speaker 2
They were always kind of hesitant rotating at the top.
38:20
Speaker 2
And then you got guys around the net trying to make up for it.
38:23
Speaker 2
And it was just a terrible situation for the goaltenders because they were getting one timers on, you know, scene passes every night.
38:32
Speaker 2
So we'll see how effective they are at putting in that structure that allows them to play fast and hopefully slow down other teams.
38:41
Speaker 1
It will be interesting.
38:42
Speaker 1
Anyone else on your mind?
38:45
Speaker 1
We'll get them all covered over the season.
38:47
Speaker 1
But anyone, any other standouts right now?
38:50
Speaker 2
I think Henricks on defense, you know, another big defense.
38:55
Speaker 1
Yeah, he's like 6'3 or 6'4, isn't he?
38:58
Speaker 2
Yeah, and he skates well, you know, for a big guy.
39:01
Speaker 2
And so I think that's going to help them out quite a bit as well.
39:06
Speaker 1
What about some of these former Gophers?
39:08
Speaker 1
They've all kind of gone out to other places.
39:11
Speaker 1
Is there anyone you're interested in seeing how they do at their new school?
39:18
Speaker 1
Oh, I get much thought of it.
39:19
Speaker 1
I'm just throwing it out at you there.
39:21
Speaker 2
But I mean, I wonder what Leo Gruba looks like out of the Minnesota spotlight.
39:29
Speaker 1
And he's in Notre Dame now, correct?
39:31
Speaker 2
He's at Notre Dame now.
39:32
Speaker 2
Like we saw that with Grant Krutschank, who came to Minnesota and it just didn't work.
39:37
Speaker 2
Like he's a good player, good skating, lots of ability.
39:42
Speaker 2
But for whatever reason, Minnesota didn't work.
39:45
Speaker 2
You know, he goes to a new place.
39:47
Speaker 2
All of a sudden, he's at all conference again, you know.
39:50
Speaker 2
I think maybe Leo just needs a fresh start, maybe a little bit less pressure on him.
39:55
Speaker 2
He was one of those guys that had to burn the boats model going the end of the year as the boat was already taking on water.
40:01
Speaker 2
Oh, yeah.
40:02
Speaker 2
Might as might as well burn it as well.
40:04
Speaker 1
They didn't have any oars.
40:08
Speaker 2
I hope they have life jackets.
40:11
Speaker 2
But but you take him out of Minnesota.
40:13
Speaker 2
You know, he's a good player.
40:14
Speaker 2
He scored a lot of points in the USHL, and maybe he goes to a different spot at Notre Dame where there's a lot of structure traditionally.
40:21
Speaker 2
Who knows what Brock's going to do with his team as he kind of makes it over, but maybe less pressure and he has a better season.
40:29
Speaker 1
Such a nice kid.
40:30
Speaker 1
I hope he does well.
40:33
Speaker 1
Oh, you mentioned Grant Cruickshank.
40:35
Speaker 1
I think he's been back helping with some of the, as alumni kind of coaches down there.
40:39
Speaker 1
He's been skating a little bit, hasn't he?
40:41
Speaker 2
Well, he came back early in camp as kind of like pre-pro camp for him.
40:46
Speaker 2
Cal Thomas was out there too, skating with the Gophers.
40:48
Speaker 2
And I think it's just good that those guys feel like they can come back and skate with the program.
40:53
Speaker 2
I know over the summer, they had a lot of former Gophers come in and run a practice.
41:00
Speaker 2
You know, those captains practices that they had going on.
41:02
Speaker 2
You know, I think we saw Kyle O'Poso, Blake Wheeler, Nate Schmidt around campus.
41:07
Speaker 2
You know, those guys come back and skate.
41:09
Speaker 2
And having them tell what it meant to be a Gopher to these guys as well, I think is an important part of program building.
41:17
Speaker 2
You know, there's a lot of turnover in this year's roster.
41:21
Speaker 2
So, just getting those guys feeling comfortable about wearing the Ammon and playing in front of the microscope.
41:26
Speaker 2
You know, I think Brett Larson was a little surprised at his first press conference.
41:30
Speaker 2
He said, wow, a lot of TV cameras, a lot of writers here, a lot of microphones, a little bit different.
41:36
Speaker 1
And it wasn't even the super fancy that they've done in the past.
41:39
Speaker 1
Sometimes they've done it in the club room and you know.
41:43
Speaker 2
Welcome to New World, Brett.
41:45
Speaker 2
And look out.
41:46
Speaker 2
Yeah.
41:47
Speaker 1
New World.
41:48
Speaker 1
Well, speaking of changes, we're losing the Sira Torrey brothers in college hockey veegs.
41:57
Speaker 1
Tom and Frank are deciding to hang it up.
42:00
Speaker 1
Tom announced it quite a while ago.
42:02
Speaker 1
And just was it yesterday?
42:03
Speaker 1
I think Frank announced he's going to retire after this season to two of the best guys, best characters in all of hockey veegs.
42:14
Speaker 1
These guys are just spectacular.
42:18
Speaker 2
I've had the chance to interview both of them for stories I've written over the years.
42:22
Speaker 2
They are great storytellers.
42:24
Speaker 2
They're very generous with their time.
42:26
Speaker 2
I sat next to Frank Sira Torrey at a Frozen Four in Tampa for two games.
42:32
Speaker 2
And it was just, it was a joy.
42:36
Speaker 2
It's one of those things when you get doing this as kind of a side hustle like we do.
42:41
Speaker 2
And he just sits down next to you and talks to you about the whole game.
42:45
Speaker 2
And you're talking strategy, X's and O's and just thoughts on college hockey in general during stoppages.
42:53
Speaker 2
It was one of the high points of the trip to Tampa.
42:57
Speaker 1
I bet it was.
42:59
Speaker 1
I'm voting, I know you want to become the college hockey commissioner, but maybe they could be the co-commissioners first before you're ready to come in to take that position.
43:08
Speaker 1
That was my vote.
43:09
Speaker 2
I would happily be their secretary and from two of the best.
43:15
Speaker 2
We've had so much turnover in college hockey for coaches.
43:18
Speaker 2
I saw something like 40% of the head coaches are new in the last couple of years.
43:23
Speaker 2
It's just crazy to see the change.
43:27
Speaker 2
We'll miss them and I hope they don't step away too far from college hockey.
43:31
Speaker 1
And I think a lot of it is, well, it's NIL, it's younger coaches that can maybe relate to younger players a little better than coaches used to.
43:41
Speaker 1
I mean, you look at David Carl, perfect example of how he runs a program.
43:48
Speaker 1
And maybe some of the older guard, yeah, they don't want to do this or whatever.
43:52
Speaker 1
It's just part of the change in hockey, I would say.
43:57
Speaker 2
And I think the other change in hockey is you have to re-recruit guys constantly.
44:02
Speaker 2
Even though there's a player on your roster, you constantly have to be thinking about, okay, I really want them to see the value of what this program offers.
44:12
Speaker 2
And I think you're seeing that at a lot of schools.
44:14
Speaker 2
When you hire Matt Cullen, originally he wasn't going to be able to coach on the ice during practice.
44:20
Speaker 2
But they hired him to come in and be like the player development coach where he would do video on every guy and say, this is what habits you need to work on to translate to the next level.
44:32
Speaker 2
This is the kind of speed and strength and skill work that you need to do to get to the next level.
44:37
Speaker 2
Let's get you a plan.
44:39
Speaker 2
Let's mentor you on that path.
44:41
Speaker 2
You have to provide that for guys to get them to stay.
44:45
Speaker 2
And I think it's key in college hockey.
44:46
Speaker 2
If you want to be successful, it's not going to be these first round players that come in at 18 and 19.
44:53
Speaker 2
You cannot win just by getting those guys.
44:55
Speaker 2
You have to have the guys that stick around two, three, maybe four years and want to be a part of a program and a coach that could put the puzzle pieces together to.
45:05
Speaker 1
Oh man, that is so critical.
45:08
Speaker 2
So I think having these young guys in these coaching positions, they get that and they can embrace that a little bit more.
45:15
Speaker 2
I think some of the old guys with gentlemen's recruiting, once you got a player to commit to you, they were yours in your mind.
45:25
Speaker 2
They committed to you.
45:26
Speaker 2
They're your property, per se, and you could give them tough love, you could give them no love, but they were tied to you and they had to figure it out together.
45:37
Speaker 2
And I think now it's a big mindset change where you're constantly recruiting people and showing them the benefit of being there and trying to figure out how to raise money for NIL.
45:47
Speaker 2
The coaching position is a lot different today than it was 20 years ago, even 10 years ago.
45:53
Speaker 1
It definitely is.
45:55
Speaker 1
We're very fortunate that Bemidji is coming down here for an exhibition.
45:59
Speaker 1
I believe it's January 2nd.
46:00
Speaker 1
We get to see Tom.
46:03
Speaker 1
I would say Tom is almost exactly like his brother Frank.
46:07
Speaker 1
He's just not as public with some of his zaniness as maybe Frank is.
46:14
Speaker 1
But boy, they're really similar in person, Veegs.
46:20
Speaker 2
Yeah, I think sometimes Frank is like, he thinks he's on the comedy stage sometimes when there's media available.
46:26
Speaker 2
Where Tom is more the guy that you'd meet at the bar rail after the comedy set.
46:31
Speaker 2
And then you get the real picture of what he's thinking.
46:34
Speaker 2
So I think that's a little bit of a difference there.
46:36
Speaker 2
So what do you see?
46:38
Speaker 2
But yeah, it'll be great to have him coming down.
46:42
Speaker 1
I'm looking forward to it.
46:45
Speaker 1
Another thing looking forward to here, Veegs, your top 20 preseason people are already ripping on you.
46:52
Speaker 1
Minnesota too high, Wisconsin too low.
46:55
Speaker 1
What are you doing?
46:57
Speaker 1
It's just your opinion.
46:58
Speaker 1
That's all it is.
47:00
Speaker 1
It's just beginning season.
47:01
Speaker 1
It doesn't mean anything.
47:02
Speaker 1
It's the beginning of the season.
47:03
Speaker 1
We really don't know what's going to happen.
47:06
Speaker 1
Just go with the flow.
47:08
Speaker 2
I do feel like after getting some pushback on my Wisconsin ranking and trying to justify it a little bit more in my mind, you know, I'm open to feedback.
47:18
Speaker 2
I want criticism from people.
47:20
Speaker 2
I'll take it.
47:21
Speaker 2
You know, if you don't like the haircut that I got at the Dapper Wolf this week, that's fine.
47:25
Speaker 2
I can take it.
47:26
Speaker 2
I'm tough enough.
47:27
Speaker 2
But I look at Wisconsin and I look at their returning scoring, they lost more than half of it in the off season.
47:35
Speaker 2
And I just question, you know, they did get JJ Weebush in the transfer portal that could help their offense.
47:42
Speaker 2
But I think that's a huge concern for them this season.
47:47
Speaker 2
I think college hockey is going to be more competitive than ever this season.
47:52
Speaker 2
I was talking to Brad Schlossman early in the off season, and he's like, there are going to be some really good teams that aren't even going to finish in the top half of their conference.
48:01
Speaker 2
Like we are seeing more high draft picks come to college, older players in college hockey, it's going to be a dogfight this year.
48:09
Speaker 2
And it'll be really interesting to see how things shake out.
48:12
Speaker 2
You know, I look at my top 10 and there's a lot of talent in all those teams.
48:18
Speaker 2
If you look back, like the roster from these teams, you put them in the time machine and take them back five years, they could all be number one.
48:28
Speaker 1
So Denver, Michigan, Michigan State, North Dakota, that's even Duluth, your top five are the blue bloods.
48:36
Speaker 1
I mean, even Duluth's a blue blood now, I consider them, and I almost consider they might be a little low there.
48:40
Speaker 1
They're going to be so good.
48:42
Speaker 1
They're all going to be so good, Veegs.
48:45
Speaker 2
Yeah, all these teams are good, especially like you look at the NCHC.
48:49
Speaker 2
There's going to be a team playing on the road that's going to be really talented and could be right there in the MPI at the end of the season.
48:58
Speaker 2
But I do think, you know, Michigan, Michigan State have so much talent this year.
49:02
Speaker 2
Michigan's been able to get to the frozen for three of the last four years.
49:06
Speaker 2
Narrow is a learning how to coach.
49:10
Speaker 2
I think a team he's very good at developing talent.
49:14
Speaker 2
He's very good at developing talent.
49:15
Speaker 2
But I think, you know, learning to get a team ready to win a championship, that's probably the difference between him and Carl.
49:22
Speaker 2
You know, David Carl just has that championship juice, whatever it is, he has that team where they can figure it out.
49:31
Speaker 2
You listen to some of the interviews Rieger Lorenz was giving as he made his wild camp debut this year.
49:38
Speaker 2
He said, you know, I had all these points my freshman year, and then I really struggled for a little bit.
49:44
Speaker 2
And Carl was able to like say, hey, you know, there's impacts on the game you can make that aren't just points.
49:50
Speaker 2
You know, if you start doing these things, the points will come and it will make you a better pro when you leave this place.
49:57
Speaker 2
And what do they do?
49:58
Speaker 2
They somehow turn it around after being like 13 in the pairwise, and they win the whole thing.
50:03
Speaker 2
They don't lose a game.
50:04
Speaker 2
And, you know, the second half of January, February, March, unbelievable.
50:09
Speaker 1
Yeah, quite the lineup Quinnipiac is going to be good this year.
50:13
Speaker 1
I mean, yeah, they were, you know, I look, I look at that.
50:17
Speaker 1
I look at that.
50:18
Speaker 1
I look at that top 15.
50:19
Speaker 1
Wow.
50:22
Speaker 1
Like you said, everyone's getting so much better.
50:24
Speaker 1
Techs picked to win their league in the CCHA.
50:27
Speaker 1
When's the last time Tech was picked to win any league?
50:32
Speaker 2
Well, mid 70s.
50:34
Speaker 2
Bill McCult is a very good coach, and he is putting in a lot of time with this team.
50:40
Speaker 2
A lot of Canadians on this Michigan Tech roster.
50:43
Speaker 2
It'll be interesting to see how that shakes out.
50:46
Speaker 2
A lot of competition there.
50:48
Speaker 2
They're going to be a tough matchup for the Gophers this weekend.
50:51
Speaker 1
Well, let's get to that then.
50:53
Speaker 1
Heading up to Houghton in the first time in over 10 years, I believe it's been.
50:59
Speaker 1
I think we were talking to Deutsch.
51:00
Speaker 1
He's like, yeah, that was my first season or something like ours.
51:03
Speaker 1
It was like, yeah, it was his first year, was the last year of the WCHA that he got to go to Houghton.
51:12
Speaker 1
It's been a while.
51:14
Speaker 2
Yeah, I made a road trip to Houghton twice, and one night my crew won the 50-50 raffle at the game both nights.
51:24
Speaker 2
And I just want to let any Michigan Tech people that are watching or listening.
51:30
Speaker 2
We did invest all that money back in the local economy.
51:34
Speaker 2
We were buying rounds at all the bars for everybody.
51:37
Speaker 2
I made friends with a Michigan Tech football player that night.
51:40
Speaker 2
We were both pretty big guys, and we respected each other.
51:43
Speaker 2
It was a great time.
51:44
Speaker 2
And they have a passionate fan base.
51:46
Speaker 2
The Mithoaks are probably looking forward to this one.
51:51
Speaker 2
And it's the diehard Gopher fans who are looking forward to this one.
51:53
Speaker 2
Because I know there's groups of fans that make regular summer trips to beautiful Houghton to take in the big lake.
52:03
Speaker 1
Quite a few people in the chat say they're heading there on their way there.
52:06
Speaker 1
And I actually know there's people there already enjoying the wonderful fall colors in northern Michigan out of Houghton and the whole general area actually.
52:18
Speaker 1
What do we expect this weekend?
52:20
Speaker 1
I mean, Larson already knows, typically, it shouldn't be a big deal.
52:25
Speaker 1
Oh darn, I'm at Minnesota now.
52:27
Speaker 1
We're going to get everyone's best effort.
52:30
Speaker 1
So they're right in the fire.
52:33
Speaker 2
Yep, right in the fire.
52:34
Speaker 2
You know, experienced team, a lot of veterans be hard to play against.
52:39
Speaker 2
I think also with Minnesota, you know, we have all these pieces that are coming into play, haven't really gone into the battle together with each other.
52:47
Speaker 2
That's always going to be different than how practice goes.
52:50
Speaker 2
You know, there's going to be a little bit more physical contact.
52:54
Speaker 2
The puck battles are going to go up at intensity.
52:57
Speaker 2
And you know, Minnesota has a lot of skill.
53:01
Speaker 2
Sometimes in games like that, the skill can get away from you or it can cost you possessions as you try to do too much.
53:07
Speaker 2
So I think that's the big challenge for Minnesota is to play direct and let the skill come out of compete and hard work.
53:15
Speaker 2
I think that's one of Jack Ramsey's sayings all the time is like, you know, if you work hard, then let the skill come out.
53:22
Speaker 2
And I think that's a little bit of what this team needs to do this weekend.
53:26
Speaker 1
Oh, and Bartoszewicz in goal likely for tech.
53:29
Speaker 1
I'm thinking yes.
53:30
Speaker 2
I mean, he's wearing a letter for them this year.
53:32
Speaker 2
So I'd have to expect him to get some games here against Minnesota unless he really struggles.
53:39
Speaker 1
He's got to be so amped up, though.
53:41
Speaker 1
He did pretty well.
53:42
Speaker 1
I think it was a win and a loss here last year, I believe.
53:45
Speaker 1
So.
53:47
Speaker 2
Nice kid, you know, the player that wanted to leave and then wanted to come back.
53:51
Speaker 2
You know, he's a key player for the Huskies.
53:53
Speaker 2
I'm looking forward to seeing him in action against Minnesota.
53:57
Speaker 2
So we'll see.
53:59
Speaker 2
You know, not a lot of high draft picks for the for tech, you know, for all the CHL players they have.
54:04
Speaker 2
It's kind of those guys that we thought would come to college hockey initially.
54:09
Speaker 2
You know, the older guys who are aging out.
54:11
Speaker 2
So that'll be that'll be interesting this year.
54:16
Speaker 1
It will be.
54:18
Speaker 1
What's your prediction on this weekend?
54:20
Speaker 1
It's tough to predict a first weekend.
54:22
Speaker 1
Putting you on the spot.
54:25
Speaker 2
Oh, I know if I go my gopher strike, I think I'm going to have the Gophers win on Friday and then tech win on Saturday.
54:34
Speaker 2
It's so hard to sweep in college hockey, especially on the road.
54:38
Speaker 2
And we'll see what happens with LJ Mooney in the lineup.
54:42
Speaker 2
People in the chat are saying he's going to be there or they talk to him at the scrimmage and he's going to play.
54:46
Speaker 2
You know, this might be out of his hands as well.
54:48
Speaker 2
He might be a player that wants to play.
54:50
Speaker 2
It's the first weekend.
54:52
Speaker 2
And do you need him against Michigan Tech?
54:56
Speaker 2
I mean, it would definitely help, but you definitely are going to need him against North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth.
55:02
Speaker 1
Definitely going to need him there.
55:05
Speaker 1
Well, I picked Minnesota with five points in Gopher Strike, which reminds you, go to Gopher Strike, make your picks.
55:15
Speaker 1
It's all based on a perceptual win and loss, Veegs.
55:20
Speaker 1
You kind of perceive a win as two to three points, even though it's not points.
55:25
Speaker 1
You kind of see a loss as zero to one point.
55:28
Speaker 1
So that's all you get to do.
55:29
Speaker 1
Just go to Gopher Puck Live.
55:33
Speaker 1
There's a Gopher Strike button at the top.
55:35
Speaker 1
Actually it's not right now.
55:36
Speaker 1
So wait until after we're done, then the Gopher Strike button will be back up there.
55:40
Speaker 1
I'm going to pick a theoretical five points this weekend.
55:44
Speaker 1
I should go check my Gopher Strike, see what I actually picked.
55:46
Speaker 1
I'm not really sure yet.
55:49
Speaker 1
It should be fun.
55:50
Speaker 1
Not on local television.
55:51
Speaker 1
It's being streamed by, oh, who is it, Veegs?
55:56
Speaker 2
Midco?
55:57
Speaker 2
Midco.
55:58
Speaker 1
Midco Plus.
55:58
Speaker 1
Midco Plus.
56:00
Speaker 1
There's not really a lot of information about.
56:03
Speaker 1
You can't really do a single game.
56:05
Speaker 1
It seems like when you go to single game says, hey, single games are meant for the Summit League stuff.
56:09
Speaker 1
I'm like, it's a little confusing.
56:13
Speaker 1
I'm probably just going to listen to, you know, Wally and Pat, because it's fun.
56:17
Speaker 1
And I'll be on a computer doing all stuff on the site.
56:20
Speaker 1
Anyways, I pin some things down.
56:23
Speaker 2
It's going to be a little bit more complicated.
56:25
Speaker 2
I used to watch CCHA on flow hockey.
56:28
Speaker 2
And I'm pretty sure that's gone away, which is too bad.
56:31
Speaker 2
So we'll see.
56:34
Speaker 2
We'll all be learning together on Friday early.
56:39
Speaker 1
I'm probably just going to stream the audio, which is just fine.
56:42
Speaker 1
I'm fine.
56:45
Speaker 1
So five points and you're thinking split.
56:49
Speaker 2
I think it's what?
56:50
Speaker 1
And then an odd we cause is it is weird.
56:58
Speaker 2
What can you write?
57:01
Speaker 2
Well, I think, you know, new coaching staff, you know, they usually have to set the schedule.
57:06
Speaker 1
It also sounds like they were not left with something great either.
57:09
Speaker 1
They were left with no holes in the schedule.
57:13
Speaker 1
They were lucky to get Alaska Anchorage in mid November to come here.
57:21
Speaker 1
You have to find these, even find that contract.
57:23
Speaker 1
Is it going to be like a two for one?
57:25
Speaker 1
Maybe are they going to go back up there?
57:27
Speaker 1
Maybe early next year?
57:28
Speaker 1
Because then you can get some extra games if you go up to Alaska.
57:33
Speaker 2
Yeah, I think some coaches like to do that.
57:35
Speaker 2
So, you know, I always talk to Don.
57:37
Speaker 2
He's like, if you play for four years, I want you to have a trip out east.
57:41
Speaker 2
Like, you have a trip to Alaska, like you have a trip out west, you know, you should get the gambit of opportunities, one ECAC, one Hockey East.
57:51
Speaker 2
So we'll see what Brett Larson has in mind for scheduling.
57:54
Speaker 2
We know that they're locked up with North Dakota here for a while.
57:57
Speaker 2
They're locked up with Minnesota Duluth here for a while.
58:00
Speaker 2
Be interested to see Minnesota State back on the schedule.
58:03
Speaker 1
It will be Thanksgiving weekend.
58:05
Speaker 1
That'll be fun.
58:05
Speaker 1
Home and home.
58:06
Speaker 2
The crazy home and home.
58:10
Speaker 1
I think it'll be fun.
58:11
Speaker 1
It's gonna be fun.
58:12
Speaker 1
I'm definitely gonna head down for that one in Mankato.
58:15
Speaker 1
Boston College.
58:16
Speaker 1
Aren't they're heading out to Boston College next year.
58:18
Speaker 1
They're not playing this year, but I believe it's next year, like October.
58:22
Speaker 2
Yep.
58:23
Speaker 1
So it's gonna be fun.
58:27
Speaker 1
How's your overall excitement?
58:29
Speaker 1
I've been kind of getting excited here.
58:30
Speaker 1
I've been kind of feeling a little like Brett Larson.
58:33
Speaker 1
Let's hurry up and get this going.
58:34
Speaker 1
And we're finally here, Veegs.
58:35
Speaker 1
How are you feeling in general about this season?
58:40
Speaker 2
In general, I think college hockey is going to be really fun to watch with all the talent.
58:45
Speaker 2
I'm excited that Brett didn't hold back with his remaking of the team immediately.
58:53
Speaker 2
I think we've seen coaches make moves.
58:56
Speaker 2
And if they don't grab a few guys from their former team and add other guys to like fill the holes immediately, they struggle.
59:05
Speaker 2
Brett didn't do that.
59:06
Speaker 2
He brought in some really good transfers.
59:08
Speaker 2
They're going to be impact players for him.
59:10
Speaker 2
He flipped a few recruits and he's put together a roster that's going to be competitive from the get go.
59:17
Speaker 2
And that's exciting to me.
59:19
Speaker 2
You know, it's fun to have Paul Martin, Corey Leyland on staff.
59:22
Speaker 2
It's good to have Matt Cullen jumping on board.
59:25
Speaker 2
It's good to have Jacob and Potter back.
59:27
Speaker 2
You know, I think they've got a really motivated crew to get this right.
59:32
Speaker 2
Because you talk to everybody about how is the summer long.
59:36
Speaker 2
They're ready to play games.
59:39
Speaker 1
It was long and I'm excited.
59:40
Speaker 1
And you kind of mentioned Brett Larson.
59:42
Speaker 1
They're making changes quickly.
59:43
Speaker 1
You know, we had him on before a lot of those things happened.
59:47
Speaker 1
And we kind of told him tough decisions were coming.
59:50
Speaker 1
And he made them and guys were gone and guys were in.
59:55
Speaker 1
So he made those tough decisions.
59:59
Speaker 1
Yeah, it sucks.
1:00:00
Speaker 1
I really hope these guys that were kind of pushed out are successful.
1:00:04
Speaker 1
I would love to see it.
1:00:07
Speaker 1
Nothing against those guys at all.
1:00:08
Speaker 1
All great guys.
1:00:10
Speaker 1
I enjoyed time with all of those guys over these past couple of years.
1:00:14
Speaker 1
So I look forward to them being successful at other places.
1:00:17
Speaker 1
But I'm really excited for this year.
1:00:23
Speaker 2
Well, you know, it is a win now business these days with all the turnover coaching and all the money involved in college athletics.
1:00:30
Speaker 2
It goes two ways.
1:00:33
Speaker 1
It definitely does.
1:00:34
Speaker 1
Anything else, Veegs?
1:00:37
Speaker 2
I think that's it.
1:00:37
Speaker 2
I'm getting thirsty.
1:00:38
Speaker 2
Let's get to OT.
1:00:39
Speaker 1
You're getting thirsty, huh?
1:00:40
Speaker 1
All right.
1:00:41
Speaker 1
Well, that's going to do it for this episode of the GPL podcast.
