This is The Gopher Puck Live Podcast, part of the Pulltab Sports family.
0:09
Oh boy, Jup making mistakes, I love it.
0:16
What's your stance on the home side NCAA regionals?
0:19
That's everyone's favorite topic these days, Brett.
0:23
That's easy for me, I'm all in on that.
0:25
I would rather play at home.
0:28
You gave me a thumbs up, that's good.
0:32
So Sam, I think you might have gotten kicked out of the game maybe?
0:35
Yeah.
0:36
For being a dirty player, in Toad Lake, I'm sure.
0:41
Boy, if North Dakota hasn't won every game, fire the coach.
0:46
Dave Haxdell was fired 32 times.
0:54
Now, here's Jupiter and Vegoe.
1:03
Jûpe ♃
Good evening, and welcome to the Gopher Puck Live Podcast, episode number 310.
1:10
Jûpe ♃
And the season finale, Viggs, we're finally closing you out for this season.
1:17
Vegoe
I think for a lot of fans, they're probably happy to move on from this season from a Gopher perspective.
1:24
Vegoe
I feel like we've got a lot of things to look forward to for next year.
1:26
Vegoe
But this this was a tough year for her fans.
1:31
Jûpe ♃
Oh, I would say to say the least.
1:36
Vegoe
Any time you move on from a coach at the end of the year, things didn't go the way you expected.
1:44
Jûpe ♃
I can't really disagree with you there.
1:48
Jûpe ♃
You know, I did a little preview video today and all the things I was thinking of during that little video.
1:53
Jûpe ♃
And I'm like, going, jeez, you know, we had Coach Larson on in our last podcast.
1:59
Jûpe ♃
And I'm like, you know, a lot of tough decisions coming and we'll get we'll get into that.
2:03
Jûpe ♃
But portal opens and boom, six guys are in it right away that overnight.
2:10
Jûpe ♃
It was quick.
2:12
Vegoe
Yeah, I think they had put the writing on the wall for guys pretty early in the process.
2:17
Vegoe
And as we see with the portal, a lot of players have their advisors helping them out as they as they find new homes.
2:25
Vegoe
And so while I think technically they didn't enter the portal until late in the process, things were happening behind the scenes as I think Coach Larson was fair to guys.
2:35
Vegoe
And, you know, he said in a lot of his appearances, you know, it's going to be some tough conversations where you're going to tell guys they can't be Gophers.
2:44
Vegoe
And we saw that with a couple of guys.
2:46
Jûpe ♃
We did.
2:47
Jûpe ♃
We'll get into the portal a little bit later.
2:50
Jûpe ♃
I kind of want to wrap up this season.
2:54
Jûpe ♃
And again, Viggs.
2:58
Jûpe ♃
Denver is the national championship, is the national champion, I should say.
3:02
Jûpe ♃
There we go.
3:03
Jûpe ♃
There's the Frozen Four that happened in Vegas.
3:08
Jûpe ♃
Michigan, I think they outplayed Denver in that game, but they just couldn't put them away.
3:15
Jûpe ♃
They dominated them in overtime, but I kept tweeting, and you were even tweeting too.
3:21
Jûpe ♃
And they're not taking advantage, they're not doing it.
3:24
Jûpe ♃
Denver's just sitting back, sitting back waiting.
3:26
Jûpe ♃
And sure enough, they get that overtime goal to get to the national championship.
3:30
Jûpe ♃
And then of course, Wisconsin takes out North Dakota.
3:35
Jûpe ♃
What are your thoughts on those games starting off the bat?
3:38
Vegoe
I mean, I think you look at Michigan, like from a coursey perspective, of course, they were dominating with the chances and the possession.
3:46
Vegoe
But I think a lot of times they were wasting their puck possession.
3:51
Vegoe
You know, you watch The Wild with Quinton Hughes right now, holding on to pucks and making more difficult plays on the other team are going to get you goals.
4:01
Vegoe
Just coming down and taking low danger shots, especially when you're up against a good goalie who's seen everything, it's not going to be very effective.
4:10
Vegoe
And I felt like Michigan just kind of fell into that trap of just, you know, doing the smart thing, getting the puck on net, where you want to get the puck on net with some danger.
4:20
Vegoe
You want to get the puck on goal with the other team fatigued and get them in some chaos and get some rebounds.
4:26
Vegoe
And the way that, you know, the goaltender was playing for Denver, that wasn't happening.
4:32
Vegoe
And I think Denver just bided their time and that experience paid off for them.
4:36
Vegoe
And, you know, wasn't a skilled, skilled player getting the goal, you know, as one of their depth guys who hadn't scored.
4:42
Vegoe
And it just shows David Karl has his finger on the pulse with Denver Hockey and how to win in college hockey games.
4:51
Jûpe ♃
So the team we thought was going to make maybe the Big Ten champion this year was Michigan losing over time to Denver.
5:00
Jûpe ♃
Denver gets there.
5:01
Jûpe ♃
But early in the afternoon, Wisconsin took care of North Dakota.
5:06
Jûpe ♃
North Dakota did get a goal.
5:07
Jûpe ♃
What was in the last minute of the game to make it a little nervous.
5:12
Jûpe ♃
But Wisconsin, after a terrible January and a run and got their butts kicked by Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament, make it all the way to the end.
5:26
Jûpe ♃
Props to coach Mike Hastings and that team coming together at the end of the season.
5:32
Vegoe
Yeah, Wisconsin looked like a really aggressive Mike Hastings coach team against North Dakota.
5:38
Vegoe
They were jumping on breakouts.
5:40
Vegoe
You know, I think we're a little humorous on Twitter saying North Dakota looked like they traded for the Gopher Defense of Corps in that game as they struggled to break pucks out and it was kind of a vaunted group of players for North Dakota and they just were neutralized by an aggressive older Wisconsin team that really made it hard on the fighting Hawks and they took advantage and Wisconsin played really well in the tournament and that was kind of the Mike Hastings team that, you know, we've learned to see over the years.
6:10
Vegoe
It's not the most exciting brand of hockey at times, but it's very effective and you know, North Dakota did a lot to rebuild and get to the Frozen Four, but there are a lot of green jerseys upset in Vegas, I think, with the result of the four.
6:26
Jûpe ♃
Well, there were a lot of happy Gopher fans that I believe were rooting for Wisconsin, which is like, I don't know, it's like either or I know there's more hate for North Dakota around this area, but if you've talked a lot of some of the old timers weeks, it's the hate is for Wisconsin.
6:48
Jûpe ♃
So I think people literally wanted a comment to hit the arena that evening and let any of the four teams win.
6:58
Vegoe
I think one of the things I've learned over the years following Gopher Hockey is that once a team has a bunch of years of success, their fans get a little cocky and overconfident, and when they've been down a while, they kind of lose that, and you almost feel sorry for them.
7:16
Vegoe
And Mike Hastings is a great guy to talk to.
7:18
Vegoe
You just kind of had a soft spot in your heart, I think, for Wisconsin this year.
7:22
Vegoe
I know there's a lot of hate over the years, better dead than red.
7:27
Vegoe
I'm sure there's a lot of old Gopher fans who wouldn't want anyone to win.
7:31
Vegoe
But I think I heard Brett Larson talk about this, like, who do you want to root for in the Frozen Four?
7:38
Vegoe
Hastings is a decent guy to follow and support.
7:41
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, you can't really go wrong with that.
7:45
Jûpe ♃
Steve Larson, our guy, it was great watching the Sioux lose in Vegas.
7:50
Jûpe ♃
I know both Steve's I see in the chat.
7:56
Jûpe ♃
We're happy to see North Dakota lose.
7:59
Jûpe ♃
I must be honest, I was a little happy to see North Dakota lose as well.
8:04
Jûpe ♃
We go to the National Championship Game, and boy, Denver showed us why they're the best again, and they've been the best for the last 20 years.
8:14
Jûpe ♃
They just have been.
8:16
Vegoe
They're just a smart hockey team.
8:18
Vegoe
Like they play winning hockey.
8:20
Vegoe
They develop their players over the year.
8:22
Vegoe
You look at all the CHL, the high end guys that are picking Denver right now, they're going there because David Carl has just got this reputation right now of coaching guys the right way.
8:34
Vegoe
And players are happy there.
8:35
Vegoe
You hear them talk about the Denver Way.
8:38
Vegoe
It's hard to criticize it right now.
8:41
Vegoe
You know what?
8:42
Vegoe
Scott Sandlin, I believe, is stepping down from the rules committee this year.
8:45
Vegoe
It's the end of this term.
8:46
Vegoe
A lot of people want David Carl to take the reign there and lead college hockey the next couple of years.
8:52
Vegoe
And he's certainly doing it with his team on the ice.
8:55
Jûpe ♃
He certainly is.
8:57
Jûpe ♃
And what's the 11th or 12th champ?
8:59
Jûpe ♃
I can't even keep track.
9:00
Jûpe ♃
It's their 20th championship.
9:01
Jûpe ♃
It just feels like their 20th championship.
9:03
Jûpe ♃
It feels like a lot.
9:04
Jûpe ♃
It does.
9:05
Jûpe ♃
Of course, they've won a lot recently.
9:07
Jûpe ♃
And even before Carl got there, they were winning Vs.
9:10
Jûpe ♃
They were always there.
9:14
Jûpe ♃
It's just you have to give them credit.
9:16
Jûpe ♃
You have to give them credit.
9:20
Jûpe ♃
They earned it.
9:22
Jûpe ♃
They got through.
9:24
Jûpe ♃
They came through when they needed to.
9:27
Jûpe ♃
Full credit to Denver.
9:29
Jûpe ♃
I'm just going to have to give them full credit.
9:31
Vegoe
And Hicks was a great goalie for them.
9:33
Vegoe
And he was supposedly headed to Tennessee State for this season.
9:38
Jûpe ♃
Yes.
9:39
Vegoe
And that program doesn't get off the ground.
9:41
Vegoe
He ends up at Denver, becomes the starter mid-year.
9:44
Vegoe
And it just changes the trajectory of the season.
9:47
Vegoe
And it's just amazing to see how that worked out.
9:50
Vegoe
I don't think David Karl expected that to work out the way it did.
9:54
Vegoe
But it was an amazing result.
9:58
Jûpe ♃
All right.
9:59
Jûpe ♃
When we had Coach Larson on, he had not announced his staff.
10:02
Jûpe ♃
We kind of knew.
10:05
Jûpe ♃
Grapevine was talking all over the place.
10:06
Jûpe ♃
We kind of knew what the staff was going to be.
10:10
Jûpe ♃
Tell us about the staff that he has put together for this team next season.
10:16
Vegoe
Well, I think it would be really interesting to see Paul Martin in a full time role on the staff, coach in the defense, getting involved in the recruiting aspect a little bit.
10:26
Vegoe
You know, I heard he was going up to Fargo to watch the young Swede up there before it was official that he was going to come to Minnesota.
10:34
Vegoe
You know, just to see him spend some time on the road and evaluate players and not just be a guy who's helping player development and meeting players there.
10:44
Vegoe
Be interested to see his coaching style on the ice.
10:47
Vegoe
You know, at times he seems like a kind of a soft spoken players guy.
10:51
Jûpe ♃
We'll see.
10:52
Vegoe
Does that change once he gets a little bit more authority as one of the assistant coaches?
10:57
Vegoe
It's probably one of the things I'm most looking forward to with the new staff.
11:02
Jûpe ♃
Gordon, staying on as one of the coaches as well.
11:06
Jûpe ♃
I'm not sure where his role is going to be.
11:08
Jûpe ♃
Do we really know what his, is it going to be the same role?
11:12
Vegoe
Well, I think one of the things with Ben Gordon is the players coming back really like him.
11:17
Vegoe
I heard Brody Zemur and LJ.
11:19
Vegoe
Mooney spoke very highly of Coach Gordon when the staff was being figured out for this year.
11:25
Vegoe
And of course, the recruits, Ben Gordon has been the guy who's been on the road probably the most of the Gopher coaching staff.
11:33
Vegoe
And so he's got a lot of those connections across college hockey and with the guys coming into the program that were committed already.
11:40
Vegoe
And I think maintaining that's really important.
11:43
Vegoe
I do think he's probably on a little bit of a tryout because I don't think Brett Larson knows him very well.
11:48
Vegoe
I think that's one of those things.
11:50
Vegoe
And you often hear coaches go, well, you know, I need a guy to coach the Fords and I need a guy who is an alum.
11:56
Vegoe
And you're a good fit for that.
11:58
Vegoe
So let's see how it goes.
11:59
Vegoe
And, you know, that worked out pretty well for Brett Larson when he was that guy for Scott Sandlin.
12:04
Vegoe
So a huge opportunity for Gordo.
12:06
Vegoe
And he brings a lot of energy to the program.
12:08
Vegoe
And it'll be interesting to see how he adjusts under a new head coach as well.
12:13
Jûpe ♃
And we've got Corey Leland coming in over from St.
12:16
Jûpe ♃
Thomas, U of M alumni, alum, I should say, assuming he's going to be coaching the Fords.
12:27
Jûpe ♃
And maybe Gordon goes more into that recruiting role.
12:31
Jûpe ♃
Do we know anything where that's going to all land?
12:35
Vegoe
I don't think we know for sure.
12:37
Vegoe
But what we know is that we have a guy here who's been a forward, who's coach D and has played D, I think as a pro.
12:44
Vegoe
So he's got both sides of the coin.
12:46
Vegoe
He can be very flexible with the staff.
12:48
Vegoe
And I just think he's a guy who's got a lot of experience in college hockey.
12:53
Vegoe
He's a guy who's paid his dues.
12:55
Vegoe
He did it the hard way coming up through those lower junior leagues and putting in the time.
13:01
Vegoe
And he did a great job at St.
13:02
Vegoe
Thomas navigating the Transfer Portal for them.
13:05
Vegoe
They had a very senior heavy roster last year for St.
13:09
Vegoe
Thomas that almost got them into the tournament and he played a big part of that.
13:13
Vegoe
And I think he also connects some of the older alums for Minnesota.
13:17
Vegoe
I think that's something that Brett Larson really values with the staff is having...
13:21
Vegoe
He's not a gopher.
13:22
Vegoe
So he wants to have guys on staff who can make those connections for him.
13:27
Vegoe
I heard Brett Larson had a big event with a bunch of alums here last week.
13:32
Jûpe ♃
I heard that.
13:33
Vegoe
In the western suburbs and, you know, having guys like Leland really helps facilitate that.
13:39
Vegoe
You know, you probably get a little bit more trust and feedback from guys of that era, knowing one of their own is on the staff.
13:47
Jûpe ♃
Matt Cullen, that's that's a big name.
13:53
Vegoe
That is a big name.
13:54
Vegoe
You know, you got a player up there, you know, huge influence in Morehead as they won their state titles, influence in the Fargo force as a part owner and a huge influence.
14:05
Vegoe
Having his kids come up through youth hockey the last couple of years, you know, Wyatt Cullen is one of the highest risers in this year's draft as he grew from 5'6 to 6'1 and has just blossomed as a prospect for NHL teams.
14:21
Vegoe
And you know, Matt's been helping him along in that development the whole way.
14:25
Vegoe
And then, you know, Brooks Cullen is the oldest kid in that family, has been grinding away as Fargo's captain in the USHL.
14:32
Vegoe
And then the youngest, Joey, is probably the next big star out of the fam.
14:37
Vegoe
And he's got a lot of offensive talent.
14:40
Vegoe
I think he just needs to grow a little bit with some physicality and grow in his body a little bit.
14:45
Vegoe
And he'll get to do that at the National Development Team Program.
14:49
Vegoe
But having a guy like that on staff is going to be a huge help, I think, just in recognition among young top prospects in those age groups.
14:58
Jûpe ♃
Wyatt, you say his, you know, is really going up, which he has been.
15:05
Jûpe ♃
And, you know, another player recently did that, you know, on his, you know, kind of year, summer before he comes to the university.
15:13
Jûpe ♃
And that was Matthew Nyes.
15:16
Jûpe ♃
Matthew Nyes was it was quiet.
15:18
Jûpe ♃
It's like, oh, we're getting this Arizona kid.
15:19
Jûpe ♃
And then all of a sudden he blossomed right before he came to the U.
15:24
Jûpe ♃
And it seems like Wyatt Cullen is doing the same thing.
15:28
Vegoe
Yeah, a little bit.
15:29
Vegoe
I think Wyatt comes with a little bit higher profile because of his name.
15:33
Vegoe
And one of the things with Nyes is when he grew, he had a struggle year.
15:39
Vegoe
You know, he had a year where he had to kind of adjust to his body.
15:42
Vegoe
Growing up, he was a small player, just like Wyatt was, developed a lot of skill.
15:46
Vegoe
As he grew, he had a tough season in the USHL with Tri-City, and that kind of hurt his draft stock.
15:53
Vegoe
So they're just kind of on like little bit different timelines, I think, of development.
15:58
Vegoe
But anytime you have a player who's been small and has been, you know, lauded for their skill, and then they get big, it just adds a whole nother level to their game.
16:09
Vegoe
And I'll be interested to see why, if he makes that transition at Minnesota.
16:14
Vegoe
You know, certainly, you know, this year with the hip flexor issue that he had, you know, literally like growing pains had it, you know, tear off the bone, because he was just growing so fast and working out and putting on muscle.
16:27
Vegoe
And dealing with that kind of adversary is something he did this year.
16:31
Vegoe
So he's got a big challenge ahead of him going next year.
16:35
Vegoe
You know, he played for USA at the U-18s this past week, and they lost in the quarterfinals.
16:40
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, I was watching that yesterday.
16:42
Vegoe
Tough moment for USA Hockey.
16:46
Vegoe
A lot of question marks around the team selection, but he was their best player.
16:50
Vegoe
He led them in scoring by quite a bit and put up some flashy plays.
16:54
Vegoe
He will get a big chance for Minnesota next year.
16:57
Jûpe ♃
So Matt Cullen is essentially taking over the role that Paul Martin had, correct?
17:04
Vegoe
Correct.
17:05
Jûpe ♃
He can, so he'll be there advising players.
17:08
Jûpe ♃
Maybe I don't know what he can do with the recruiting.
17:11
Jûpe ♃
He could be on the ice.
17:12
Jûpe ♃
He could not instruct on the ice.
17:14
Jûpe ♃
We know we've seen it with Paul Martin in the past.
17:17
Jûpe ♃
Basically retrieving pucks and they're not really, they're not coaching, but it's still a good influence to have that kind of player on the ice.
17:28
Vegoe
Yeah, a guy like Matt can go over video with players.
17:32
Vegoe
I've heard one of the things he's doing is doing some off season development work with guys, like saying, hey, these are Gophers who do things kind of the way you do them and they're in the NHL.
17:43
Vegoe
So that's what we want to see you develop as a player is that skill.
17:46
Vegoe
And this is what that looks like.
17:48
Vegoe
Here's you doing that.
17:50
Vegoe
You know, what's the difference?
17:51
Vegoe
What do you have to add to your game to be able to do it at the NHL level?
17:55
Vegoe
Things like that.
17:56
Vegoe
And, you know, he's just someone who can advise players with his history in the game.
18:01
Vegoe
You know, developing as a player, as a pro, transitioning into his post-pro career, you know, just being there for players to talk to.
18:12
Jûpe ♃
It's going to be fun to see where that relationship goes.
18:16
Jûpe ♃
They retained Jacob Leroy as kind of their Director of Operations, Jeff Wenzel, Grenseth, kind of guys already at the U.
18:26
Jûpe ♃
No goalie coach?
18:29
Jûpe ♃
Brennan?
18:30
Jûpe ♃
Brennan Ponderzay?
18:32
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, so yeah, it's, I don't think it's an HR at you.
18:35
Jûpe ♃
It's kind of a, we need to figure it out issue, isn't it?
18:40
Vegoe
I think so.
18:41
Vegoe
In the last two weeks have been pretty busy for the coaching staff.
18:45
Vegoe
Minnesota had a lot of their HP stuff for the 16 and 17 kids.
18:50
Vegoe
And so the coaches are busy with that.
18:53
Vegoe
WHL playoffs have been going on.
18:55
Vegoe
I know coaches have been watching Everett a little bit here and there.
18:59
Vegoe
And then they just had their meetings down in Florida this week.
19:02
Vegoe
So coaches have been a little busy with all the duties of a coach.
19:08
Vegoe
And this is one thing that should wrap up pretty soon, I'm told.
19:12
Vegoe
But I don't have the official inside info on exactly what's happening.
19:18
Jûpe ♃
All right.
19:21
Jûpe ♃
The portal opened up a couple weeks ago.
19:23
Jûpe ♃
It has closed since then.
19:24
Jûpe ♃
Graduate students can still be added.
19:31
Jûpe ♃
We'll get into some of the consequences.
19:32
Jûpe ♃
Right now, I show 345 guys had entered the portal.
19:37
Jûpe ♃
225 were added that Monday on the 13th VIGS.
19:44
Jûpe ♃
Thoughts on the craziness of the portal, besides six Minnesota players coming and going on that day?
19:54
Vegoe
Yeah, it's just the realistic stuff with college hockey, with roster limits, with programs getting cut, with the changes in the recruiting cycle for everything, and just there's some coaching turnover.
20:11
Vegoe
We're going to see a lot of movement.
20:13
Vegoe
I think one of the things in college hockey, we're seeing guys from the CCHA, from Atlantic Hockey, from the Independents, want to move up into the Big Ten and CHC Hockey East.
20:26
Vegoe
You're even seeing some of the ECAC guys want to have that conference for more of an experience at different levels.
20:34
Vegoe
And it just shows that there is kind of a tier to college hockey right now.
20:40
Vegoe
The experience playing for a Big Ten institution is totally different than a lot of the other institutions out there.
20:46
Vegoe
And players are going to move.
20:48
Vegoe
And Minnesota this year, probably one of the best portal teams in the country.
20:54
Vegoe
They did very well.
20:56
Vegoe
I think they fixed a lot of the issues in their pipeline, especially with Evan Muir and Tanner Hendricks.
21:04
Vegoe
Right Shot D, we talked about this a lot last year.
21:07
Vegoe
Leo Grubo was the only Right Shot D on the team.
21:10
Vegoe
I think it created more problems than the coaching staff was probably willing to admit.
21:16
Vegoe
And it was just one of those things where, you know, their pipeline got off a little bit when they had Rinzel and Chesley leave and they just didn't have guys coming in to place them.
21:26
Jûpe ♃
So we knew Nathan Airy went into the portal right away since he was a grad student or he had graduated.
21:32
Jûpe ♃
So we knew about that.
21:33
Jûpe ♃
But the six that day on the 13th was Leo Grubo, Jimmy Clark, Eric Paulson, Finn McLaughlin, Max Shrood and August Faloon.
21:45
Jûpe ♃
I think we expected a lot of those names.
21:51
Jûpe ♃
What names were you surprised by?
21:56
Vegoe
I mean, not really any of them.
21:57
Vegoe
You know, okay.
21:59
Jûpe ♃
I will say that I would say, you know, some of the Internet, social media, they were surprised by Jimmy Clark.
22:06
Jûpe ♃
And then I kind of reminded them he didn't have the greatest of seasons.
22:11
Jûpe ♃
He kind of has not done much really since his freshman year.
22:15
Jûpe ♃
He was a little not too bad last year.
22:17
Jûpe ♃
But so me, I think maybe Clark, but the rest of them, Paulson has flashed a couple of times, but that's it.
22:28
Vegoe
I think the biggest one not so the biggest commonality in those players that are leaving the program is that I think they all just needed fresh starts.
22:37
Vegoe
You can just kind of tell in their body language in games and in practices that I see that a lot of people don't.
22:44
Vegoe
They were just struggling through the microscope of being Gophers and being in the roles they were struggling, not having success.
22:55
Vegoe
They needed fresh starts.
22:57
Vegoe
And I think in college hockey these days, a coach like Brett Larson has learned that you can't always have that many players that need that soft shoulder and that, you know, rope to regain the confidence.
23:13
Vegoe
And it was probably easier for everyone to just have a transition with those players.
23:18
Vegoe
And I think it's not a question of skill and ability.
23:22
Vegoe
It's a little bit of confidence and role and expectations.
23:27
Vegoe
And I think a lot of those players will be on the fresh starts.
23:31
Vegoe
We'll have a different experience next year.
23:33
Vegoe
We saw that with Grant Krutschenk.
23:38
Vegoe
You know, he came to Minnesota and just was not a great fit on the ice.
23:43
Vegoe
It sounded like he was a good fit off the ice, you know, with teammates.
23:46
Vegoe
But when it came to game time, he had a tough time fitting in at Minnesota.
23:51
Vegoe
And then when he moved on to St.
23:53
Vegoe
Cloud, you know, everything fell into place for him again.
23:56
Jûpe ♃
And he was back to the center at St.
23:58
Jûpe ♃
Cloud too.
23:59
Jûpe ♃
Yeah.
24:00
Vegoe
And he went back to an all-conference player there.
24:02
Vegoe
And it was just an easier fit for him.
24:05
Jûpe ♃
Yes.
24:06
Vegoe
It just didn't work out at Minnesota.
24:08
Vegoe
Whatever pressure he was putting on himself or whatever role he was in at Minnesota, it just didn't work out.
24:13
Vegoe
And so I think you could see that with some of these players.
24:16
Vegoe
But I don't think if they would have stayed, you would see the same season that they're going to have next year.
24:22
Jûpe ♃
A lot of people, even some of the people we had talked to thought that Axel Begley would be gone and Graham Harris would be gone.
24:32
Jûpe ♃
Neither of those are gone.
24:35
Jûpe ♃
But I'm guessing Axel will be back.
24:39
Jûpe ♃
I haven't heard much.
24:40
Jûpe ♃
I'm Graham Harris.
24:43
Jûpe ♃
I'm assuming he's going to be on the roster next year.
24:47
Jûpe ♃
We just don't know.
24:48
Vegoe
The thing I hear with those two, I know people are going to be in the comments criticizing this, but they're really good teammates and they're really good people, and they don't bring anything down.
24:59
Vegoe
They might not be producing lots of points and contributing in the ways that fans maybe want, but they're contributing in practice, and they're contributing to help their teammates.
25:09
Vegoe
When they do get opportunities, they come in and they play their role.
25:13
Vegoe
And they're not complaining about just being a fourth-line player, being the extra D.
25:18
Vegoe
They're like, what do you need?
25:19
Vegoe
I will give it to you.
25:21
Vegoe
And when they make mistakes, they're not guys who throw their heads to the sky or slam their sticks.
25:27
Vegoe
They set their edges and they get back in the play.
25:30
Vegoe
And that's something that Brett Larson really values.
25:36
Jûpe ♃
Well, we'll get into the players coming in in a bit here.
25:40
Jûpe ♃
So we'll just have to wait and see there.
25:45
Jûpe ♃
What are your thoughts on the rest of the portal?
25:46
Jûpe ♃
Who did well?
25:47
Jûpe ♃
Who didn't do well?
25:50
Vegoe
Oh, boy, you know, it's hard to evaluate at this point for me until we see what CHL players end up in their spots.
26:01
Vegoe
A lot of the CHL players don't want to make that announcement commitment until the end of May.
26:08
Vegoe
And so I'm kind of waiting for that, all the shakeout.
26:12
Vegoe
And I'm also waiting to shake out, you know, what CHL players decide to sign pro contracts that maybe are surprises and which ones actually come back.
26:22
Vegoe
I saw a quote from Luke Strand while looking back at Evermere clips and he said, you know, these days you can't really trust who's going to be on your roster until you see the whites of their eyes in August.
26:36
Vegoe
Until then, it's hard to know.
26:39
Vegoe
So I don't have a great evaluation of the other teams in the portal yet.
26:43
Vegoe
I kept myself pretty busy watching the Gophers.
26:47
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, it was it was kind of crazy.
26:49
Jûpe ♃
We'll get into those six added players in a little bit here.
26:54
Jûpe ♃
But it was, did you like the two week window?
26:58
Vegoe
I mean, it was over.
27:01
Vegoe
You know what I mean?
27:02
Vegoe
It's not something you want dragging on forever.
27:04
Vegoe
I like that it was a tight window.
27:07
Vegoe
You know, it's always going to be challenging because once your season is done, you're going to want to figure out what's next.
27:12
Vegoe
And that's challenging, I think, for teams in the Frozen Four.
27:15
Vegoe
But it's the reality of sports right now is that, you know, once your season is done, what's next?
27:22
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, it's been crazy tracking it.
27:24
Jûpe ♃
You know, our main guy who's been helping us out with tracking did a phenomenal job.
27:30
Jûpe ♃
I'm already working on improvements to the GPL portal for next year.
27:33
Jûpe ♃
That's because you just got all the stats automatically.
27:37
Jûpe ♃
Because I miss things like time on ice and just things like that that I can build into it.
27:44
Jûpe ♃
So we'll just keep improving that and trying to keep being the hub and along with Schloss.
27:50
Jûpe ♃
Schloss is just phenomenal tracking all that stuff.
27:54
Jûpe ♃
Like I said, I don't think he went to bed till like two or three that first night.
28:00
Vegoe
Well, the thing with Schloss is he's hearing from all the advisors and stuff about where guys are going.
28:04
Vegoe
And that's something that the godfather of college hockey has that we don't quite have yet.
28:11
Vegoe
And so we're just happy to follow him and read all that info from the godfather.
28:16
Jûpe ♃
We did get a few emails from a couple of D1 players.
28:20
Jûpe ♃
We did put up a form that people could fill out, and we got a couple of those.
28:26
Jûpe ♃
What's really great is we get a lot of parents of D3 players for both the men and women that send us updates, which is just wonderful.
28:36
Jûpe ♃
So we're proud to track everywhere, not just the D1 men, but the D1 women and D3 men and women.
28:44
Jûpe ♃
So that was definitely a fun thing.
28:49
Jûpe ♃
We're just going to try to keep improving, because we're going to try to get it better next year.
28:53
Jûpe ♃
And we'll see how crazy it gets next year.
28:56
Jûpe ♃
Yeah.
28:57
Vegoe
And I think it's a good reminder that a lot of these players are entering the portal, not because they want to.
29:01
Vegoe
It's because their schools are telling them, hey, it's time for a change.
29:07
Jûpe ♃
Alaska schools like 12 and 13.
29:10
Jûpe ♃
I mean, just ridiculous how they're having to do that almost yearly now, the Alaska schools.
29:15
Vegoe
Yeah.
29:16
Vegoe
So it's a real challenge for people in hockey.
29:19
Vegoe
And the player pool has never been bigger.
29:21
Vegoe
So it's really hard to be a D1 player these days.
29:24
Jûpe ♃
Well, we'll see how long it stays bigger.
29:28
Jûpe ♃
That's going to be our next topic.
29:30
Jûpe ♃
First, we need to talk about Cub Foods Vigs.
29:35
Jûpe ♃
They have been a sponsor for quite a while for GPL.
29:39
Jûpe ♃
And I must tell you a quick story.
29:41
Jûpe ♃
Driving home from Duluth last, earlier this week, driving through Northern, down before we get to downtown.
29:47
Jûpe ♃
And Barb goes, hey, isn't that Vigs Cub Foods?
29:52
Jûpe ♃
I'm like, yes, it is.
29:54
Jûpe ♃
Right off the highway there.
29:57
Jûpe ♃
You spend a lot of time there, don't you?
29:59
Vegoe
Yeah, my Quarry Cub makes my game day super easy.
30:03
Vegoe
You know, as the wild are just wowing everybody in the playoffs with Quinn Hughes.
30:07
Vegoe
You want to stock up at Cub, get your game day foods, get your chips, your dips, your wings, your brats, your pub burgers, whatever, party trays.
30:16
Vegoe
Cub is your spot for all that stuff.
30:18
Vegoe
I'm at my Quarry Cub multiple times a week.
30:21
Vegoe
I had to make pizza tonight.
30:22
Vegoe
I had to get some pepperoni.
30:24
Vegoe
Cub is my spot to go.
30:25
Vegoe
And they're one of us.
30:26
Vegoe
They're a local company and they support local things like our podcasts and they're on PJ Flex headset.
30:32
Vegoe
Sometimes when players announce that they're coming back through Dinkytown Athletes, you see Cub Foods on there.
30:38
Vegoe
That's because they're supporting that too.
30:40
Vegoe
So go to your local Cub, your next shopping trip, Cub Foods, Shop Happy, Shop Cub.
30:48
Jûpe ♃
Speaking of sponsors, you know, the University made announcements of LJ.
30:53
Jûpe ♃
Mooney and Mr.
30:55
Jûpe ♃
Zeamer are returning and they were both kind, they were both sponsored, I noticed, Figs.
31:00
Jûpe ♃
That was very interesting.
31:03
Vegoe
I believe we had our Northland Ford dealers and a Fendi Plus getting involved.
31:09
Vegoe
Very effective partnerships there.
31:11
Vegoe
I think there's some other alums who helped make that possible as well because other schools were saying, hey, we could find maybe a little bit more money than Minnesota can find if you want to transfer schools.
31:27
Vegoe
And I think, you know, those players had those opportunities there.
31:32
Vegoe
And, you know, it was a little slower than I think some fans were thinking that they would announce they were coming back.
31:39
Vegoe
And so I think the power of maybe not having the biggest offer, but an offer makes the difference in retaining those players.
31:47
Vegoe
And I think that's the reality of college hockey going forward.
31:51
Vegoe
I've always said, I think money invested in players coming back for that extra year is the best money you can spend.
31:59
Vegoe
I know there's a lot of talk about Depont from Everett and where he's going to end up.
32:04
Vegoe
Potential number one pick for the next year.
32:07
Vegoe
The only thing with a player like that is that you're probably only going to get him for one year.
32:14
Vegoe
Maybe not the best use of funds if they're looking for big money.
32:20
Vegoe
I think putting money into guys like Mooney and Ziemer is just the perfect way to go for Minnesota and something I think they should do going forward.
32:28
Vegoe
When Jimmy Sagerud comes back, gets a little extra money to do that and has the year that he has, that's money well spent.
32:38
Jûpe ♃
That was one very big positive, I would say, of players coming back.
32:43
Jûpe ♃
I'm excited about the roster for next year.
32:46
Jûpe ♃
But during this time period after our last show with Brett Larson, some chaos has been introduced by the NCAA.
32:57
Jûpe ♃
Something called, something called Five for Five.
33:01
Jûpe ♃
Football and basketball are going to be great.
33:04
Jûpe ♃
It's going to be the best thing ever.
33:06
Jûpe ♃
We don't give a shit about the rest of the sports in the NCAA.
33:10
Jûpe ♃
We care about football and basketball.
33:13
Jûpe ♃
Your thoughts?
33:15
Vegoe
Well, I will say big time college football has never been better.
33:19
Vegoe
There's lots of parody.
33:21
Vegoe
It's great for college football.
33:23
Vegoe
You know, there are players that want to play five years and don't want to have to deal with this game limit thing as a redshirt freshman to preserve that.
33:31
Vegoe
They should just play five.
33:33
Vegoe
That makes a lot of sense.
33:34
Vegoe
And the five and five makes sense for them because they have high profile players who probably have some money now because they've been getting revenue share of that twenty and a half million dollars they can afford maybe some representation to go after the NCAA and get, you know, sixth or seventh year somehow through the Clearing House and get approved.
33:56
Vegoe
Good for those sports.
33:58
Vegoe
Rest of the rest of the athletics, totally different scenarios.
34:03
Vegoe
And I just think that you have these people in charge of the NCAA who should just have different rules for football and basketball and hockey.
34:13
Vegoe
Stop making rules for everybody.
34:15
Vegoe
Say this is specific for football.
34:17
Vegoe
This is specific for basketball.
34:20
Vegoe
And stop ruining everybody else's games because this is the only one you're caring about.
34:25
Vegoe
It's pretty challenging, I think, to be a fan of college sports right now.
34:32
Vegoe
And I saw Hammy on our board say he's liking pro sports more.
34:37
Vegoe
I still like the college game a lot.
34:40
Vegoe
I'm enjoying this run by the wild, but they are paid mercenaries.
34:44
Vegoe
They are entertainers.
34:46
Vegoe
I think college sports still has a little bit of a loyalty and a tradition to it that's a little bit different.
34:54
Vegoe
It's definitely changing, but I think it's changing faster in football and basketball than it is anywhere else.
35:00
Vegoe
And that's fine.
35:02
Vegoe
Make the changes there.
35:03
Vegoe
I wish they wouldn't apply them to hockey.
35:06
Vegoe
Because it's such a different sport.
35:07
Vegoe
And I think one of the unanticipated, or just consequences of this is high school sports in Minnesota for hockey.
35:16
Vegoe
You know, you're going to have players who are going to have a hard time sticking around for their senior year, knowing that if they play their senior year and they play a year of juniors, they might only get three years of college hockey if they don't do it the right way.
35:32
Vegoe
I mean, there's not a lot of college hockey players that are looking for five years of eligibility in hockey.
35:37
Jûpe ♃
That is true.
35:38
Jûpe ♃
That is true.
35:38
Jûpe ♃
I think that's one thing that's just not terrible about it.
35:45
Vegoe
I think when we saw the COVID fifth year, that was kind of a weird thing to give players an extra year of experience.
35:50
Vegoe
And that had its own ripple effect in college hockey.
35:53
Vegoe
But I don't think people are looking to have red shirts playing college hockey.
35:58
Vegoe
You know, college hockey has always said, you know, elite first to the second round pick talents.
36:03
Vegoe
You can play as an 18, 19 year old.
36:06
Vegoe
Most of the rest of you should come at 20 after playing two years of junior post high school and then come to college hockey.
36:13
Vegoe
And that's that's worked out really well for a lot of years in college hockey.
36:17
Vegoe
And it makes a lot of sense for it to continue.
36:20
Jûpe ♃
They're not thinking about international at all.
36:24
Jûpe ♃
Different countries, Europe, the high school, it's a different, completely different system.
36:31
Vegoe
Well, and Matt Wellens had a lot of great ideas about the women's game and how you have a lot of different options to finish your schooling in Canada before they come play women's college hockey.
36:43
Vegoe
Just doesn't make a lot of sense, too.
36:46
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, I'm sorry to hear that, because I know it's going to, it's, you know, it's, you know, from what we know, well, this year seniors across all sports get screwed the most because they're not going to be grandfathered in, so they can't get a fifth year.
37:06
Jûpe ♃
And they were the first year outside of the COVID.
37:09
Jûpe ♃
So a bunch of guys in front of them all got that extra year.
37:12
Jûpe ♃
Then there's them.
37:14
Jûpe ♃
And now everyone after them can get potentially a fifth year.
37:18
Jûpe ♃
Kind of a bad deal for the seniors this season, Viggs.
37:21
Vegoe
And the roster limits.
37:23
Vegoe
So there's less opportunities to play college hockey in a lot of P5 type schools and the schools who opted in.
37:30
Vegoe
So it's a huge mess.
37:35
Jûpe ♃
Of the news we do know this year's freshmen, whatever age, you know, from what I've read based off of, you know, what Schlossman and some other people have said, they will have the choice of going with the four year system if they're coming in at 20 or 21 or the five year system.
37:57
Jûpe ♃
And then they would start, but obviously a lot of those older guys would pick the four year system this year.
38:02
Jûpe ♃
So in reality, this fall, it won't be as impactful maybe until fall of 2027.
38:12
Jûpe ♃
Is that what we kind of know right now?
38:15
Vegoe
I think that's what we think.
38:16
Vegoe
Like you look at Gavin Katz who committed to Penticton today, for another year of junior hockey, how does that work for him?
38:25
Vegoe
Does he only get three years then in Minnesota or does he get four?
38:28
Vegoe
Has he graduated from high school technically yet or not?
38:32
Vegoe
These are the kind of interesting things.
38:33
Vegoe
It's like no one at the NCAA is really looking at this.
38:38
Jûpe ♃
I'm thinking by the time we get back here in October, there'll be zero clarity because there's going to be lawsuits.
38:46
Jûpe ♃
There's going to be lawsuits and the NCAA never wins these lawsuits, Viggs.
38:51
Vegoe
Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how it shakes out.
38:54
Vegoe
You know, in Florida, you know, coaches were plotting about how to respond to this.
38:59
Vegoe
And of course, you had Butchie Gross during the Frozen Four saying, maybe hockey should just split off from the NCAA.
39:05
Vegoe
And I go, you know what, Butchie, maybe that's a good idea.
39:09
Vegoe
Maybe hockey should split off and just be its own governing body somehow.
39:15
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, but then you never know what's going to happen.
39:19
Vegoe
You don't, but at least you'd have control over it somehow.
39:23
Jûpe ♃
The funny thing is, is that I've got Mark Pryor, he tweeted at us earlier today, question for the podcast is the five or five that's happening similar to what Don Lucia was suggesting near the end of his tenure.
39:36
Jûpe ♃
I recall he had some kind of suggestion that would somewhat limit the older players in the NCAA, and I think this is very similar.
39:46
Jûpe ♃
He wanted to kind of start a clock at, you know, after their senior year.
39:51
Jûpe ♃
Correct?
39:52
Vegoe
Correct.
39:53
Vegoe
This is very similar to that.
39:55
Vegoe
And, you know, it makes a lot of sense as a parent of hockey players like Don Lucia was, you know, advocating for this.
40:04
Vegoe
You you don't want kids spending two, three years playing juniors as a parent.
40:09
Jûpe ♃
True.
40:09
Vegoe
You know, they're staying in billet homes or away from your family.
40:12
Vegoe
They're they're missing out on things.
40:14
Vegoe
For what?
40:15
Vegoe
You know, most college hockey players are not going to the NHL.
40:19
Vegoe
You know, all of them think they are, but the numbers just don't show that.
40:24
Vegoe
You know, you can have some very good players who peak at the ECHL.
40:28
Vegoe
You know, that's just the way it goes sometimes.
40:31
Vegoe
So the question is like, what are we doing this for?
40:34
Vegoe
If we're forcing kids out, you know, you definitely don't want too many 21-year-old freshmen coming into the league, and you definitely don't want them playing five years in college hockey.
40:44
Vegoe
So, you know, putting some kind of limit somehow makes sense to me.
40:50
Vegoe
But maybe, you know.
40:52
Jûpe ♃
Well, I think that, you know, pick the age 19 or graduation.
40:59
Jûpe ♃
Don't do this either or whatever is early.
41:02
Jûpe ♃
19 by this age or your draft year.
41:06
Jûpe ♃
Just whatever they want to do.
41:11
Jûpe ♃
As always, we just want some clarity.
41:14
Jûpe ♃
And the NCAA is terrible with this.
41:22
Jûpe ♃
Your speeches.
41:25
Vegoe
Well, because I do see the positives that I do too.
41:28
Vegoe
A lot of the coaches were saying, because you don't want guys playing junior hockey forever, but I think now when you put in a rule like this, it pressures kids to leave high school early.
41:39
Jûpe ♃
It affects juniors.
41:40
Jûpe ♃
I mean, you think of somebody like Jackson Evers, he's aging out this year.
41:43
Jûpe ♃
He's probably most likely coming into the youth this year.
41:48
Jûpe ♃
He'll be 20, I think he'll be 20 or 21 by the time he comes in.
41:53
Vegoe
He'll be 21 at some point during the season.
41:56
Jûpe ♃
I believe that's in August or something.
41:59
Jûpe ♃
The same thing with one of the, with the Swede coming in, he's going to be turning 21 in a couple of weeks.
42:05
Vegoe
Loughran, yep.
42:06
Jûpe ♃
Yes.
42:08
Jûpe ♃
They can pick the four-year rule if they want.
42:12
Jûpe ♃
I don't know, instead of the five-year this year, so it's...
42:19
Vegoe
I'm going to have to warm up to the idea, Jub, that's why I'm speechless.
42:22
Vegoe
I got to look in the stars a little bit more, but I just, but the biggest thing for me is that kids are going to be thinking about leaving high school early when they'd be leaving early for the wrong reasons.
42:35
Jûpe ♃
Correct.
42:36
Vegoe
So that's, that's the problem I have, and the way things are going.
42:40
Jûpe ♃
And is there a huge rush of them doing that?
42:44
Vegoe
Yeah, that's what we'll have to wait and see.
42:45
Jûpe ♃
Leading their high school teams all of a sudden, like, oh, we just lost three guys or whatever it may be.
42:49
Jûpe ♃
And, or, or, or does it create a logjam?
42:53
Jûpe ♃
Does the juniors then have to change the rules for eligibility even?
42:57
Jûpe ♃
We can't have these older guys.
42:58
Jûpe ♃
It's...
43:01
Jûpe ♃
Where are they going to go?
43:05
Jûpe ♃
Um, but, but, you know, I would say that this is an advantage for the younger type of team make-ups that we've been seeing from Minnesota, Michigan, Boston, both Boston schools, I should say.
43:25
Jûpe ♃
Um, I would say the Don was suggesting it a long time ago, because he thought it would be an advantage for him.
43:33
Vegoe
Well, you know, I think he thought it in the altruistic model of it was better for the players, you know, not to be forced to play so much junior hockey before coming to college.
43:46
Vegoe
You know, when a kid grows up, how many kids think, you know what, I really, really want to go play for the Omaha Lancers for three years.
43:54
Vegoe
No, that is not what kids are growing up in the backyard shooting pucks, thinking someday I'm going to be a lancer.
44:01
Vegoe
You know, someday I'm going to be a Green Bay gambler.
44:04
Vegoe
They might be happy once they get there and get the experience, but it's not.
44:08
Vegoe
It's a stepping stone.
44:10
Jûpe ♃
All right.
44:11
Jûpe ♃
I got to give on Motei.
44:13
Jûpe ♃
Something worse sports organizations in the world.
44:15
Jûpe ♃
Olympic Committee, FIFA, NFL and head of head of class for worst.
44:20
Jûpe ♃
I'm most criminal.
44:24
Jûpe ♃
The NCAA Motei is not wrong.
44:30
Vegoe
I feel pretty strongly at the Olympic Committee with all the white elephants and the chaos that goes on.
44:37
Jûpe ♃
But FIFA is really close.
44:39
Jûpe ♃
I would say NFL is not, but FIFA and Olympic Committee, those are my top two.
44:43
Jûpe ♃
And that's a big battle there.
44:48
Vegoe
Yes, one good one.
44:49
Vegoe
Mote.
44:51
Jûpe ♃
What else?
44:51
Vegoe
There's a great real sports on both of those on World Cups and the Olympics.
44:57
Vegoe
I wish HBO still had that program.
45:00
Jûpe ♃
Oh, the Bryant Gumbel.
45:03
Vegoe
Bryant Gumbel.
45:03
Jûpe ♃
That was a good series.
45:04
Vegoe
Yes, that was really good.
45:06
Vegoe
They dug in that big time.
45:08
Vegoe
So I'm sure it's out there on YouTube somewhere.
45:10
Jûpe ♃
So right now, we're just going to wait for clarity.
45:13
Jûpe ♃
We know that the seniors this season cannot come back.
45:16
Jûpe ♃
They will not get a fifth year.
45:20
Jûpe ♃
We know that freshmen this year will kind of have the choice of four years or the five-year five-for-five thing.
45:27
Jûpe ♃
And maybe for some of them, it doesn't matter.
45:30
Vegoe
It all might change in two or three years.
45:35
Jûpe ♃
It's supposed to be approved.
45:35
Vegoe
It's kind of like the weather in Minnesota.
45:37
Vegoe
You know, if you don't like it, you know, just wait.
45:39
Jûpe ♃
It'll wait 10 minutes.
45:43
Jûpe ♃
It's going to be tricky.
45:44
Jûpe ♃
Like I said, we're talking a lot about it now.
45:46
Jûpe ♃
We've been seeing Adam Wodim.
45:48
Jûpe ♃
He's he's really ticked off.
45:50
Jûpe ♃
Shocking.
45:52
Vegoe
Don't think he's being disingenuous this time.
45:55
Jûpe ♃
He is not.
45:56
Jûpe ♃
He is not being disingenuous, genuous.
46:00
Jûpe ♃
He has legit beefs and legit reasons that he's concerned.
46:04
Jûpe ♃
And it's so tough because college hockey has no control over this.
46:13
Jûpe ♃
They're at the whims of whatever football and basketball want.
46:18
Jûpe ♃
And hockey is just not that level.
46:20
Jûpe ♃
And then you've got women's basketball, women's hockey and all these other sports.
46:26
Jûpe ♃
So like you said, just wait and see.
46:30
Jûpe ♃
I guess how many lawsuits happen.
46:36
Vegoe
Maybe we'll get together with Mark Coyle this summer and we can, we can hash it out with him and figure out what we can do.
46:44
Jûpe ♃
Aside I didn't put it on our little outline for the night.
46:47
Jûpe ♃
Have you heard from Bob Motzko at all?
46:51
Vegoe
Just a couple of texts here and there.
46:53
Vegoe
You know, I think he's enjoying.
46:57
Vegoe
I think he probably missed being in Florida this last week, but I think he didn't necessarily miss being at New Hope Ice Arena watching 16 year olds play summer hockey.
47:08
Vegoe
You know, I think he's he's enjoying a little bit of boat time and maybe some some some drinks with some ice in it.
47:16
Jûpe ♃
Good for him, good for him, because you know, we I didn't think he was going to go past a couple of years even anyway.
47:24
Jûpe ♃
He kind of can't even set a long time.
47:25
Jûpe ♃
Well, I don't want to be doing this forever.
47:28
Jûpe ♃
And maybe, you know, turns out to be the best thing for him.
47:32
Jûpe ♃
Like you said, he's at home now.
47:33
Jûpe ♃
He doesn't have to worry about that.
47:34
Jûpe ♃
So not traveling to Timbuktu to see a player play.
47:40
Vegoe
I would be interested to see if Bob maybe takes a job with USA Hockey after a little bit of time off.
47:45
Vegoe
He hears about American Hockey so much.
47:48
Vegoe
And he talked about, you know, getting the coach to the World Junior Team and pretty high reverence.
47:53
Vegoe
You know, I wonder if there's some sort of role for him at USA Hockey that he could embrace and, you know, it would be something, you know, that he could be passionate about and be involved in the game that maybe is a little different than being in the ever changing landscape of college hockey where, you know, new rules get thrown out every year.
48:12
Jûpe ♃
Well, OK, speaking of new rules, are we going to get a switch to from 26 to 28 players?
48:18
Jûpe ♃
I know the coaches really want that, and they want a couple of extra games, which Minnesota still needs to find teams to play for next year.
48:26
Jûpe ♃
But that's another topic.
48:28
Vegoe
They've been doing that for the last couple of years, so that's OK.
48:34
Vegoe
You know, I think the more games, you know, that's something a lot of coaches wanted.
48:39
Vegoe
I think it's something that could come through.
48:41
Vegoe
You know, the Rules Committee is now just D1 Men's Hockey, so I think they have a little more autonomy to make these changes.
48:50
Vegoe
You know, there's talk about changing overtime rules to maybe back to five on five even, maybe having an over and back rule put into college OT, which would be fun to see.
49:01
Jûpe ♃
Oh, I'd like that.
49:03
Vegoe
Yeah, they were talking about the over the glass penalty.
49:06
Vegoe
You know, is that something college hockey should have to prep players for professional hockey, having, you know, video screens on the bench to help with challenges and help players get coached during the game?
49:18
Vegoe
You know, something that you have at pro hockey that you don't have at the college game.
49:21
Vegoe
So, you know, they're supposed to have more autonomy to make those decisions if they want to.
49:26
Vegoe
So we'll see what comes out of that in the next couple of weeks.
49:31
Jûpe ♃
Hopefully get 28.
49:32
Jûpe ♃
That would be good.
49:33
Jûpe ♃
I think that would be real.
49:34
Vegoe
But I think 28 in the 40 games are things that are good for college hockey.
49:38
Vegoe
You know, we talk about how college hockey is great because it has more practice time.
49:44
Vegoe
I think if you get the 40 games, you know, with the playoffs, you know, teams can approach the 50.
49:49
Vegoe
Maybe I don't think the practice time is going to change that much, even if you increase a couple of games.
49:55
Vegoe
The only schools that get hurt by that are the Ivies, who, for whatever reason, that's their problem.
50:00
Jûpe ♃
That's their problem.
50:01
Vegoe
That's right.
50:02
Vegoe
I think they should be changing that because, you know, those players are playing anyway, you know, and maybe just make them schedule games on the weekend like we do out west.
50:12
Jûpe ♃
Yes.
50:13
Vegoe
There's no reason to play Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.
50:16
Vegoe
Just play Friday, Saturday like everyone out west does.
50:20
Jûpe ♃
So like we alluded to, Minnesota is still trying to figure out their schedule.
50:23
Jûpe ♃
We know they open up at Michigan Tech and then they head to Duluth.
50:27
Jûpe ♃
They've got North Dakota at home.
50:31
Jûpe ♃
Going to be a very fun October.
50:33
Jûpe ♃
But like Schloss reported, they're still looking for four games to fill for next season.
50:38
Jûpe ♃
You were kind of making fun.
50:40
Jûpe ♃
I'll get late decisions.
50:42
Jûpe ♃
I know a couple of years ago, they finally I think they agreed to it.
50:47
Jûpe ♃
We were going to be on schedule, but the actual contracts didn't actually get signed until like September or even October or something like that, even though it was agreed to.
50:57
Vegoe
Yeah, they were August, September type.
50:59
Vegoe
I tweeted out a little while ago.
51:01
Vegoe
It's just something that they had.
51:03
Vegoe
They're trying to figure out things late.
51:05
Vegoe
They're trying to find dates late.
51:07
Vegoe
They're trying to adjust for World Junior stuff.
51:11
Vegoe
So it's challenging.
51:12
Vegoe
I think with one less team in college hockey, you're going to see some Atlantic teams looking for games.
51:17
Vegoe
So I'm sure Minnesota will find some games.
51:21
Vegoe
And you can't just play North Dakota's Duluths in Texas.
51:26
Vegoe
You got to find some other schools in there, too, that maybe aren't as highly ranked.
51:31
Jûpe ♃
Denver, was that just a one-off thing?
51:36
Jûpe ♃
So nothing.
51:37
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, that'd be fun to get something scheduled there.
51:40
Jûpe ♃
I know, we know they're going to Boston College the following season.
51:48
Jûpe ♃
So I think it's even on the GPL schedule.
51:51
Jûpe ♃
I've got the weekend, it's like early October of 2027.
51:55
Jûpe ♃
So they're making that return trip and they're returning to Michigan Tech, obviously, this season to start the season.
52:02
Jûpe ♃
So that will be fun.
52:04
Jûpe ♃
Any other rumors out there besides, I'm guessing, Minnesota, Duluth and North Dakota will get renewed for a couple of years.
52:12
Jûpe ♃
But anything else that you've heard about?
52:16
Vegoe
Not yet.
52:17
Vegoe
You know, I think they're really focusing on getting these four games for this year.
52:21
Vegoe
Yeah.
52:21
Vegoe
And they don't really want to schedule a heavy hitter in those four games.
52:26
Vegoe
So I think it's it's probably on the back burner for how they're going to schedule the marquee games going forward.
52:31
Vegoe
But I would I would love to see some Denver, Minnesota series.
52:37
Vegoe
I wouldn't mind going back to ASU for a home and home.
52:40
Vegoe
And of course, I'd like, you know, probably going out to see BU, someone like that, or going up to Maine, see an Alphond.
52:49
Vegoe
I think those would be good experiences.
52:51
Vegoe
You know, Matzka always said, he's like, if a guy sticks around for four years, you know, we'd like to go up to Alaska, we'd like to go out west to Colorado, and we'd like to go out east, you know, and sprinkle those in.
53:05
Vegoe
So guys get that experience over their career.
53:07
Vegoe
And also, you know, it's great to see them play all the Minnesota schools.
53:11
Jûpe ♃
I believe Alaska would be tough this year just because they're going to be looking for a home series since they're at Tech, they're at North, at UMD, North Dakota home.
53:21
Jûpe ♃
But I'm guessing they want a lot of, maybe they get Alaska schools to come here so they can maybe go there next season and get extra games.
53:31
Jûpe ♃
So that's, I mean, we know those teams are always looking for games.
53:34
Jûpe ♃
I mean, they played each other eight times last season as part of the regular season.
53:40
Vegoe
Yeah, and sometimes you do like a one for three, like, we'll go up there once and you come here three times.
53:46
Vegoe
And oftentimes they'll take that.
53:48
Vegoe
So it'll be interesting to see what they can do there.
53:52
Jûpe ♃
All right.
53:53
Jûpe ♃
Well, before we preview the next season, Viggs, Cascades, CBX Sport.
54:00
Jûpe ♃
I've been using the stuff on my knee the last month, and it has been making my knee feel a lot better.
54:08
Vegoe
Yeah, I actually picked up some tennis elbow coaching hockey.
54:12
Vegoe
I haven't been playing a lot of tennis in the off season, but I've got a little bit of tennis elbow.
54:15
Vegoe
So I've been using a little Cascades, CBX Sport.
54:18
Vegoe
It's sports CB developed by athletes for athletes.
54:22
Vegoe
It's NSF certified, free of banned substances.
54:26
Vegoe
First choice of athletes to manage pain, reduce inflammation.
54:29
Vegoe
I tell you this tennis elbow, like it's impacted my cooking, like just like using that scope.
54:35
Vegoe
We all know that my cooking is my go-to, so I got to have a little pain relief here, and it reduces pain, inflammation, release stress.
54:43
Vegoe
And Cascade CBX, they are a startup company in hungry mode, and so they've got a great deal for you.
54:50
Vegoe
Visit cascadcbxsport.com/team, and for five bucks with free shipping, you can get a 300 milligram sample jar to try it for yourself.
55:00
Vegoe
And once you try it, you might be a believer.
55:03
Vegoe
They're betting on themselves that it will work for you, so check it out, see what all the fuss is about.
55:08
Vegoe
Trust the shield and stay on the field.
55:11
Jûpe ♃
All right, so of course we think both Cub and Cascade CBX are sponsoring the Gopher Puck Live Podcast this season.
55:22
Jûpe ♃
We need to take a look at next season, Viggs.
55:25
Jûpe ♃
Start off by who we have gathered in from St.
55:31
Jûpe ♃
Cloud, Mankato and Michigan State.
55:36
Jûpe ♃
Let's start with Michigan State.
55:39
Vegoe
The goalie, Strahl, is a guy that is a big pro body, looks like a pro goalie.
55:46
Vegoe
Obviously Michigan State likes having their first round draft pick goalies coming in.
55:51
Vegoe
So Augustine's out, they've got another first round pick goalie coming in, Ravensburg.
55:55
Vegoe
So he's looking for a place, Melvin's looking for a place to play, and Minnesota is the right spot for him.
56:02
Vegoe
I think Potter had a little bit of a relationship with him somehow.
56:06
Vegoe
So he provides a transition as the Gophers will welcome back Luca for another year, and have Strahl as the backup.
56:15
Vegoe
Then I think Carter Casey would then be coming in the following year.
56:19
Vegoe
So it gives you a nice progression of goalies.
56:22
Vegoe
Luca's a little bit smaller in stature, but Strahl and Casey are like that more prototypical pro style goalie.
56:29
Vegoe
So the future looks bright in net for Minnesota.
56:32
Vegoe
I don't think he'll play a lot of games this year, but I think he'll get some experience.
56:37
Vegoe
You just don't want to lean on just one goalie the whole year.
56:41
Vegoe
You never know what's going to happen.
56:42
Vegoe
So having this guy, he was a great player in the USHL for Youngstown.
56:46
Vegoe
He was one of their top candidates for goalie of the year in that league, so he came highly regarded.
56:53
Jûpe ♃
Well, we could talk about all the players here, but let's just take a look at the full roster of what we think it is as of right now.
57:02
Jûpe ♃
So you mentioned Melvin there, who's filling, basically taking Aries' place for now, and then we expect they will pick up a third goalie somewhere.
57:16
Vegoe
I would think so.
57:17
Vegoe
You know, they're kind of holding these roster spots right now.
57:21
Vegoe
Not sure are they going to get 26 guys?
57:23
Vegoe
Are they going to get 28 guys?
57:25
Vegoe
You know, Layland might come in as another player on the roster for the Gophers.
57:30
Vegoe
Nothing official there yet, but we'll see, you know, and I still think they could probably use another center.
57:37
Vegoe
There's rumors of CHL guys like Taryn Smith from Everett who could come, but he's also picked up an injury.
57:43
Vegoe
So that's been muddied in the waters a little bit.
57:46
Vegoe
So and I still don't know if we're going to see Macio Phillips make it to campus.
57:51
Vegoe
I saw that you have him on the roster here as one of our D.
57:54
Vegoe
I don't know if that's going to happen.
57:57
Jûpe ♃
So well, I, you know, I've heard rumors that he isn't, but that has not happened in the one or two weeks since it was supposed to happen.
58:06
Jûpe ♃
He's still got stuff up on Instagram.
58:08
Jûpe ♃
I'm assuming he's going to be here until we hear something different.
58:11
Jûpe ♃
So that's why I have Macio on the roster right now.
58:16
Jûpe ♃
But you look at the defense, three returners and a bunch of new guys, and including, let's, I want to talk right off the bat, Evan Murr, out of Minnesota State.
58:29
Jûpe ♃
This guy is a star.
58:32
Vegoe
Yeah, I think he's got something to prove.
58:34
Vegoe
You know, I think from what I've heard, he wasn't getting great pro contract offers from teams that were to shirm spots on rosters for next year.
58:45
Vegoe
They wanted him to be on that amateur tryout type player.
58:49
Vegoe
He's maybe a little bit undersized, but he was an all-American defender for the Mavericks, and he's coming into a team that really could use a right shot power play D, who can make things happen and run a power play.
59:03
Vegoe
And that's something Minnesota really needs.
59:05
Vegoe
Gruba is gone, Middlestadt is gone.
59:10
Vegoe
They need a talented player there.
59:12
Vegoe
And especially with Levi Harper decommitting, that skill is a big need for this team, and he's going to provide that and get a great opportunity to show what he can do in a big schedule.
59:25
Vegoe
You look at the non-conference games we talked about and then the Big Ten schedule, he will definitely have a prove-it year.
59:32
Jûpe ♃
You mentioned earlier, Tanner Hendricks coming from St.
59:37
Jûpe ♃
Cloud will be on the D.
59:39
Jûpe ♃
And like you said, another right shooting defenseman.
59:44
Jûpe ♃
He's quite a bit bigger than Mr.
59:46
Jûpe ♃
Murr.
59:48
Vegoe
Quite a bit bigger, you know, 6'4, over 200 pounds, you know, physical guy.
59:52
Vegoe
He was banged up a little bit this year, so he didn't play a full season, but he comes with a lot of pedigree and someone I think that they'll be able to plug right in and get production from and something that they need.
1:00:03
Vegoe
And he has some skill, has some grit.
1:00:07
Vegoe
You know, Columbus Pick should be interesting to see how he fits in.
1:00:12
Jûpe ♃
Another St.
1:00:12
Jûpe ♃
Cloud kid, Finn Loftus, is that how you pronounce his name?
1:00:16
Vegoe
Yeah, kind of a late bloomer player who has been around a little bit with a couple different schools and teams over the years.
1:00:25
Vegoe
But you know, he produces some points.
1:00:28
Vegoe
He's a skilled guy, a playmaker guy, should be able to fit in the lineup and contribute.
1:00:33
Vegoe
You know, one thing, if you look at this decor, all these guys will be over 20 next year.
1:00:40
Vegoe
They're going to be experienced.
1:00:42
Vegoe
And I think having a guy like Finn in the lineup as a puck mover is something that you can really get some production out of.
1:00:50
Vegoe
You know, I think Rombach, not probably the biggest puck handler right now, Whipple, you know, more of a physical guy.
1:00:56
Vegoe
I think he wants some guys who can handle a puck in this group and maybe take some pressure off guys who play physical and Finn's another player can do that.
1:01:04
Vegoe
And also, you know, a second power play unit, he's a guy who might be able to chip in some playing time there and contribute.
1:01:11
Jûpe ♃
We'll talk about the recruits here in a minute, but let's head down to the forwards for guys being added from the portal.
1:01:16
Jûpe ♃
Austin Bernovic from St.
1:01:18
Jûpe ♃
Cloud Vigs.
1:01:20
Vegoe
Yep, big forward, probably not the fleetest of foot, which is the one thing that holds him back as a pro player prospect.
1:01:29
Vegoe
But in college, you know, he might be able to be a little bit that Matthew Wood type player, you know, real skilled and big and able to possess pucks.
1:01:37
Vegoe
He was one of the go-to players for St.
1:01:39
Vegoe
Cloud.
1:01:40
Vegoe
And I think he's a big ad for Minnesota.
1:01:43
Vegoe
And obviously Brett knows what he has there and Bernabeck as well.
1:01:47
Jûpe ♃
Christian Humphries played two seasons ago at Michigan, didn't have a great start and left, has been playing very well up in...
1:01:57
Jûpe ♃
Where is he actually?
1:01:59
Vegoe
Kitchener.
1:01:59
Jûpe ♃
Kitchener, yes.
1:02:00
Vegoe
Kitchener, get your Rangers.
1:02:02
Vegoe
You know, just a player who came to college too soon.
1:02:04
Vegoe
Another one of those development team guys who, you know, unfortunately they think they have to go right from that program into college.
1:02:14
Vegoe
And he went to Michigan and just wasn't a good fit there and needed more time to develop.
1:02:19
Vegoe
And he went to Kitchener and played pretty well for them.
1:02:23
Vegoe
And then now that they're opening up the CHL pathway back, he can come back to college.
1:02:29
Vegoe
And he's good friends with, you know, Whipple and Zemer and all those guys, Mooney.
1:02:35
Vegoe
So, you know, he's got some familiarity with the Gopher's roster and adds some skill.
1:02:40
Vegoe
I don't know where he's going to play.
1:02:42
Vegoe
I don't know if he's a center.
1:02:44
Vegoe
He can be kind of a perimeter player based on some of the stuff I've seen.
1:02:48
Vegoe
But, you know, skill in the lineup, right shot, which always helps for balance in lineup.
1:02:53
Vegoe
You know, Minnesota didn't have a lot of right shot forwards last year either.
1:02:56
Vegoe
So good addition there.
1:03:00
Jûpe ♃
All right.
1:03:01
Jûpe ♃
I believe that's everybody for the transfers.
1:03:04
Jûpe ♃
Let's go back up to the D.
1:03:06
Jûpe ♃
You kind of mentioned Maceo Phillips still may not be there.
1:03:10
Jûpe ♃
We don't think, but nothing official yet, correct?
1:03:14
Vegoe
Nothing official.
1:03:15
Vegoe
I think with the coaches on the road a lot the last two weeks, you know, we're not seeing a lot of stuff out on some of these decisions, but I just don't think it's a fit for next year.
1:03:27
Jûpe ♃
Hey boy, he's been taking a lot of penalties.
1:03:30
Jûpe ♃
A lot.
1:03:30
Jûpe ♃
He's in the box a lot.
1:03:32
Jûpe ♃
I mean, last time I looked at 157 minutes, it's probably more by now.
1:03:36
Jûpe ♃
I haven't looked lately, but I'm not sure that's what.
1:03:41
Vegoe
I mean, he's a big physical guy.
1:03:42
Jûpe ♃
Okay.
1:03:44
Vegoe
He's going to add an element somewhere.
1:03:46
Jûpe ♃
TBD.
1:03:47
Jûpe ♃
TBD.
1:03:48
Jûpe ♃
6'6.
1:03:50
Jûpe ♃
I mean, gosh, he is a monster.
1:03:54
Vegoe
Yes, he is.
1:03:55
Vegoe
He's a large man.
1:03:56
Jûpe ♃
Axel Lofgren, a Swede, recently injured, correct?
1:04:01
Jûpe ♃
No, that wasn't.
1:04:02
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, he wasn't, wasn't he?
1:04:04
Jûpe ♃
Or my, whom I think, oh, I'm thinking a CHL player that was just recently injured.
1:04:09
Vegoe
Terran Smith.
1:04:10
Vegoe
Correct, yes.
1:04:10
Vegoe
Terran Smith was recently injured.
1:04:13
Vegoe
But you know, Axel is a Swede, late developer.
1:04:16
Vegoe
Obviously Matt Cullen being up there in Fargo has had a close eye on him all year.
1:04:22
Vegoe
They love his habits.
1:04:24
Vegoe
They love his skating.
1:04:25
Vegoe
They love his, you know, team game.
1:04:29
Vegoe
And you know, he's a late addition here for the Gophers.
1:04:32
Vegoe
You know, we'll see how he fits in.
1:04:35
Vegoe
That was one of Paul Martin's first duties as coach was to go up there and scout him and get his perspective on him before it was official.
1:04:42
Vegoe
And he signed off on him.
1:04:45
Jûpe ♃
Well, that that sounds very positive, and he'll be one of those guys.
1:04:48
Jûpe ♃
He's 20 now.
1:04:50
Jûpe ♃
You know, he'll be able to kind of grandfathered in, he'll be able to pick those for the four years if he wishes.
1:04:58
Jûpe ♃
How are they going to keep track of him?
1:04:59
Vegoe
And he's a sweet, so who knows if he's even graduated?
1:05:02
Jûpe ♃
Correct.
1:05:04
Vegoe
Who knows?
1:05:06
Jûpe ♃
I keep wondering if this thing goes through, are we going to have freshmen, sophomores?
1:05:11
Jûpe ♃
Could a kid come in and be a junior already, if they were in like a late bloomer?
1:05:17
Vegoe
Maybe they're just going to say...
1:05:19
Jûpe ♃
I think we're going to have that.
1:05:21
Jûpe ♃
We can have late bloomers that lose a year or two of eligibility, but you know, they still have three years.
1:05:28
Jûpe ♃
That's not a terrible thing, Viggs.
1:05:35
Vegoe
We'll see how it all works out.
1:05:37
Jûpe ♃
All right, moving to the forwards.
1:05:41
Jûpe ♃
The Cullen brothers, tell me about them.
1:05:43
Jûpe ♃
We know, we talked about Wyatt a little bit.
1:05:45
Jûpe ♃
He's been lighting things up for Team USA, but what about Brooks?
1:05:50
Vegoe
I think Brooks will be a depth player for Minnesota.
1:05:53
Vegoe
He's not as highly regarded as his younger brothers, but still has had a good year for Fargo, leader for them up there, character player.
1:06:02
Vegoe
I think he'll add the right mix to line up.
1:06:06
Vegoe
As Brett was saying, it's like, you can't have all the same guy.
1:06:09
Vegoe
You got to have guys who can play different roles, and he's a guy that comes with a lot of good qualities for building a team.
1:06:17
Jûpe ♃
I think Graham Harris might still be TBD.
1:06:22
Vegoe
Well, I think it is TBD.
1:06:23
Vegoe
You know, he's a good teammate, and depending on how the roster limits work out, and how CHL players work out, you never know.
1:06:33
Vegoe
But it's nothing personal against him.
1:06:37
Jûpe ♃
Mr.
1:06:38
Jûpe ♃
Jacob Kwasnika, we met him at the summer showcase last year.
1:06:42
Jûpe ♃
I was very impressed with just the kid himself.
1:06:48
Vegoe
Yeah, and I think he had a great year in Penticton.
1:06:50
Vegoe
I think it was 100 points and 80 games.
1:06:53
Jûpe ♃
Correct.
1:06:53
Vegoe
Just a fantastic year.
1:06:55
Vegoe
You know, I think some people thought, you know, Mottsgill might bring him in at the midseason.
1:07:00
Vegoe
And you know, I talked to the coach and he's just like, you know, probably not fair to the kid.
1:07:04
Vegoe
He's having a great year over there.
1:07:06
Vegoe
It'd be a hard transition for him.
1:07:08
Vegoe
It's probably best for him to continue with that great season and enjoy it in Penticton.
1:07:13
Vegoe
And he'll be ready to step in and contribute next year for the Gophers.
1:07:17
Vegoe
I think he's going to be a big surprise in the Gopher lineup next year.
1:07:22
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, I would say so.
1:07:26
Jûpe ♃
Jackson Nevers, I keep thinking he's going to be a TBD guy, but he's leading Madison right now as maybe not in points, everything.
1:07:36
Jûpe ♃
But he seems like a leader to me.
1:07:39
Vegoe
Yeah, he's wearing the C for them.
1:07:40
Vegoe
He comes from a family that gets it.
1:07:44
Vegoe
I think all the Nevers kids that have come through have shown that they play the right way, that they have the right character.
1:07:52
Vegoe
And that's important in a team.
1:07:56
Vegoe
And he's the leader in the C for Madison right now.
1:07:59
Vegoe
And they won again tonight.
1:08:01
Vegoe
They're relying a lot on their goaltender that's going to North Dakota, who's playing very well.
1:08:06
Vegoe
But it takes a team in front of him to to keep it going.
1:08:09
Vegoe
So I think we still see Jackson Evers at Minnesota next year.
1:08:12
Vegoe
And he's one of those depth players as well.
1:08:15
Vegoe
Again, if you look at these forwards, the only guys who are under 20 are world junior type guys.
1:08:21
Vegoe
You know, LJ Mooney, Mason Moe, Kwasnicka, I think there's one more that I'm missing if you scroll up.
1:08:29
Vegoe
But all the guys, Mason Moe, he's the other one.
1:08:33
Vegoe
Those are the those are the guys that are under 20.
1:08:36
Vegoe
Right.
1:08:36
Vegoe
And Wyatt Collin, you know, so.
1:08:40
Jûpe ♃
And you know what?
1:08:42
Jûpe ♃
Let's talk about something.
1:08:43
Jûpe ♃
You know, the players coming back.
1:08:46
Jûpe ♃
I've got another year under their belt.
1:08:48
Jûpe ♃
You look at guys like Beckett Hendrickson.
1:08:52
Jûpe ♃
I mean, I look at this roster, there is two seniors.
1:08:57
Jûpe ♃
Three.
1:08:57
Vegoe
But look at the ages.
1:08:59
Jûpe ♃
Oh, I know.
1:09:00
Vegoe
You know, this is this is the roster that Bob probably wanted to build from day one.
1:09:07
Vegoe
You know, a team of mostly guys who are over 20, who've got two, three years of junior experience and can come right into college and play really well.
1:09:16
Vegoe
And I think they finally have that mix for this next year, that they'll be one of the most veteran teams in college hockey, something you hardly ever see at Minnesota, because their average age is going to be closer to 22 than 20.
1:09:30
Vegoe
So gonna be quite the change.
1:09:32
Jûpe ♃
Are they gonna be celebrating Senior Day anymore?
1:09:38
Jûpe ♃
I mean, like I said, I look at this.
1:09:42
Vegoe
Begley is your one senior here, I think.
1:09:45
Jûpe ♃
Oh, yeah, I might not have updated him yet.
1:09:48
Jûpe ♃
But yeah, Ludky, Transfire.
1:09:54
Vegoe
Luca.
1:09:55
Jûpe ♃
Luca.
1:09:57
Jûpe ♃
And with five years, it's like, I mean, you think about that, you know, does Luca get an extra year if he wants it?
1:10:08
Vegoe
I mean, he's going for that rocket space engineering degree.
1:10:11
Vegoe
You might need an extra year to get that.
1:10:15
Jûpe ♃
So interesting.
1:10:18
Jûpe ♃
It's like, are we going to be calling them freshmen?
1:10:21
Jûpe ♃
And is grad student going to be the new senior?
1:10:25
Jûpe ♃
Or, you know, if this rule does go through, is it going to be a boy?
1:10:28
Jûpe ♃
We're going to have to balance our classes a little more because now you've got five classes instead of four.
1:10:35
Jûpe ♃
So many things that we haven't really thought of that could be affected by everything.
1:10:43
Vegoe
Thank you.
1:10:45
Vegoe
One player that we didn't talk about, Tanner Ludkey.
1:10:47
Vegoe
Thank you, Andrew Carlson.
1:10:49
Vegoe
Oh, yeah.
1:10:50
Vegoe
He's back.
1:10:52
Vegoe
You know, I think one of those players that probably in our mind was a toss up, whether he'd stay or come back.
1:10:58
Vegoe
From what I've heard, you know, the players on the team really wanted him back.
1:11:02
Vegoe
And I think he was someone that they enjoyed playing with.
1:11:06
Vegoe
And, you know, I think has something to prove after last year.
1:11:09
Vegoe
You know, he didn't have a great season coming back from injury.
1:11:13
Vegoe
I think probably his pace of play was a little less than he was expecting, but he'll be a senior next year.
1:11:19
Vegoe
And if he can, you know, reach his peak performance, he's a great power play player, you know, and that's something that's going to be really interesting next year.
1:11:28
Vegoe
You know, with Muir up top, Mooney, Zimmer, Ludkey, and then one of the big guys, you know, is it Javon Moore?
1:11:35
Vegoe
Is it Beckett Hendrickson?
1:11:36
Vegoe
Is it someone like Kwasnicka or Humphreys coming into the power play?
1:11:41
Vegoe
That's what stirred the drink last year for Minnesota.
1:11:44
Vegoe
And if you can provide a power play that operates at that kind of efficiency, backed up with a deeper lineup, look out.
1:11:53
Jûpe ♃
Who else is going to be added?
1:11:57
Jûpe ♃
I guess some of it depends on where we end up with the roster space.
1:12:02
Jûpe ♃
I know you mentioned Smith there.
1:12:06
Jûpe ♃
Playing at Everton, he was the one who was injured.
1:12:09
Jûpe ♃
And that puts, I mean, apparently it's more significant injury.
1:12:12
Jûpe ♃
You might not have.
1:12:17
Jûpe ♃
What's next?
1:12:18
Jûpe ♃
Is it is it is it kind of a wait and see on some of the roster spots?
1:12:22
Jûpe ♃
Is that you know, we know they're going to need a goalie.
1:12:26
Jûpe ♃
We don't know about Phillips yet.
1:12:29
Jûpe ♃
There's just quite a few unknowns.
1:12:32
Vegoe
And I think it's OK to wait.
1:12:34
Vegoe
You know, I've I've talked to college coaches in the past, and sometimes you feel like you set your line up too early and then something happens where a player becomes available and you don't have a spot for them.
1:12:45
Vegoe
It's OK not to have everybody set on May 1.
1:12:50
Vegoe
So a little bit of patience to see how things shake out, to see how guys recover from injuries, see who becomes available once their major junior season ends and be patient.
1:13:00
Vegoe
You know, there might be a player that gets added, you know, in August, you know, just before school starts.
1:13:06
Vegoe
So I think some things are still up in the air, it's okay to be flexible.
1:13:10
Vegoe
A lot of players like to play for a school like Minnesota.
1:13:14
Vegoe
There's a lot of nice things about being a Gopher, so it's an attractive option.
1:13:21
Jûpe ♃
Do you have anything else?
1:13:22
Jûpe ♃
I think we've kind of covered everything.
1:13:23
Jûpe ♃
I think we had a lot of miscellaneous topics we'll hit in overtime, but anything else before we head to overtime?
1:13:31
Vegoe
I think just keep an eye on CHL players.
1:13:35
Vegoe
There's a lot of good ones who are uncommitted so far, and that's going to be the big thing I'm watching for this off season, because I know Brett Larson has been tracking some airline miles, going up there to go after players and talk to his connections up there.
1:13:51
Vegoe
I think that's a little bit of a difference on this staff than the previous one, is Brett does want to go up there.
1:13:58
Vegoe
David Karl is certainly active up there.
1:14:01
Vegoe
He made a comment that this Denver program is maybe going back to their recipe from the 70s, where they had a lot of Western Canadians on their roster.
1:14:12
Vegoe
And that's how they won all the titles in that era was was dominating up there.
1:14:17
Vegoe
We've seen North Dakota very competitive up there.
1:14:20
Vegoe
Now maybe we'll see Minnesota competitive up there as well.
1:14:25
Jûpe ♃
All right, then I think it's time to head to overtime.
1:14:28
Jûpe ♃
Let's do it.
1:14:48
Jûpe ♃
We are headed to overtime.
1:14:50
Jûpe ♃
You know what that means.
1:14:52
Jûpe ♃
It's Vegoe's Beverage of the Week.
1:15:10
Jûpe ♃
What do we have here?
1:15:12
Vegoe
We have a crawler here from Prize.
1:15:15
Jûpe ♃
Wow.
1:15:15
Vegoe
This is Peanut Buddy.
1:15:17
Vegoe
So it's a peanut butter porter.
1:15:19
Vegoe
State of Hoppe, I know he's a big fan of these.
1:15:21
Vegoe
So this is our beer of the week.
1:15:23
Vegoe
Cheers.
1:15:25
Jûpe ♃
Definitely cheers.
1:15:27
Vegoe
It's a crawler, so the can.
1:15:29
Jûpe ♃
That is a weird little thing.
1:15:31
Vegoe
Yeah.
1:15:32
Jûpe ♃
Over time.
1:15:34
Jûpe ♃
Look at that.
1:15:36
Vegoe
It's a little bit lighter ABV, so maybe we might crack this later.
1:15:41
Vegoe
We'll see.
1:15:44
Jûpe ♃
I've got this.
1:15:45
Jûpe ♃
I'm going to open.
1:15:47
Jûpe ♃
I have...
1:15:48
Vegoe
It's Friday.
1:15:48
Vegoe
It's Friday.
1:15:49
Jûpe ♃
Damn right.
1:15:51
Jûpe ♃
I've got my glass here.
1:15:54
Jûpe ♃
I put some ice in another little Yeti cup.
1:15:59
Jûpe ♃
This is...
1:16:00
Jûpe ♃
This has turned out to be my whiskey cup most of the time now because it makes my drink cold.
1:16:09
Jûpe ♃
But it doesn't get watered down.
1:16:11
Vegoe
Doesn't get watered down?
1:16:12
Jûpe ♃
No, it keeps...
1:16:14
Jûpe ♃
Well, a little bit if the whiskey is warm, but...
1:16:19
Jûpe ♃
It's not too bad.
1:16:20
Jûpe ♃
Oh, I got ice falling all over the place.
1:16:21
Jûpe ♃
You got to be careful here.
1:16:26
Jûpe ♃
I've been watching for the 1924.
1:16:29
Jûpe ♃
I haven't found it yet.
1:16:31
Jûpe ♃
Let me see.
1:16:32
Vegoe
Yeah.
1:16:32
Jûpe ♃
There we go.
1:16:34
Vegoe
It's a nice, nice bottle of bourbon.
1:16:37
Jûpe ♃
Well, I'm going to save yours probably for a frozen four, maybe, the stuff you gave me.
1:16:45
Jûpe ♃
I mean, it needs to be a really good occasion.
1:16:51
Vegoe
Maybe a sweep, maybe celebrate a sweep with it.
1:16:57
Jûpe ♃
North Dakota.
1:16:58
Vegoe
Yep.
1:16:59
Vegoe
North Dakota sweep.
1:17:04
Jûpe ♃
So where, is this year the last year of the last of the contract, or are we just, are we just half, we're just halfway through it now, aren't we?
1:17:14
Vegoe
I think halfway through that one.
1:17:16
Jûpe ♃
Yeah.
1:17:16
Jûpe ♃
So this year will be, you know, game two or year two of the four.
1:17:20
Vegoe
I probably shouldn't have poured that much, but I wouldn't say it's a mistake because it's a Friday and you know, you've got some free time.
1:17:29
Jûpe ♃
So I do.
1:17:33
Vegoe
You've got to, yeah, get a nice little Saturday tomorrow.
1:17:39
Vegoe
Let's just look in, like, do we have more?
1:17:42
Jûpe ♃
We'll have a buck.
1:17:44
Jûpe ♃
If you're a speed, cheers to everyone.
1:17:54
Jûpe ♃
Oh, boy, are you boys 420 friendly cheese?
1:18:03
Jûpe ♃
We will not be talking it up.
1:18:07
Vegoe
You know, I've had I've had a THC beverage or two.
1:18:10
Vegoe
It's a change up.
1:18:11
Jûpe ♃
So a lot of THC beverages are like the sparkling seltzer.
1:18:16
Jûpe ♃
Sorry, seltzer.
1:18:17
Vegoe
Yeah.
1:18:18
Jûpe ♃
I'm not a seltzer person.
1:18:20
Vegoe
I get kind of sleepy.
1:18:22
Vegoe
It's like a sleep aid for me.
1:18:23
Jûpe ♃
So well, I mean, that's not so bad when you want to go to sleep.
1:18:27
Vegoe
So yeah, like I think I had one for a while game and I fell asleep during the third period.
1:18:32
Vegoe
So it worked.
1:18:34
Vegoe
I felt great the next day.
1:18:35
Vegoe
Yeah, that's good.
1:18:37
Vegoe
Not I didn't fall asleep during this last series where Brock Faber is a man playing Faber and Lacombe.
1:18:46
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, I was just I had the games on before.
1:18:49
Jûpe ♃
It looks like, you know, Sabres eliminated Boston that went final right after we started.
1:18:54
Jûpe ♃
But looks like the lightning.
1:18:56
Jûpe ♃
They're going to game seven and Golden Knights and Mammoth are in the end of the first.
1:19:03
Vegoe
And we're kind of Logan Cooley.
1:19:05
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, we're rooting for Utah on that one, because that would push out the wild, at least another day.
1:19:10
Vegoe
Yes, which I think would be good after that series with Dallas.
1:19:15
Jûpe ♃
Cool.
1:19:15
Jûpe ♃
He's doing OK.
1:19:16
Vegoe
A lot of fun.
1:19:17
Jûpe ♃
But LaCombe, holy buckets.
1:19:20
Jûpe ♃
He's been looking good, Viggs.
1:19:22
Vegoe
Yeah.
1:19:23
Vegoe
And I was just like, I was kind of texting with some friends this last week.
1:19:29
Vegoe
And I just remember when he was playing for the Gophers, he would kind of be like Hughes and just control the pace of the game, control the puck, control the blue line and just allow everybody else to execute.
1:19:44
Vegoe
And I just remember that there are so many times where even if they're down a goal and they pulled the goalie for the extra attacker, I was like, they got this.
1:19:52
Vegoe
You know, they're going to be just fine.
1:19:56
Vegoe
Lacombe and Faber and Nyes, and Stuggerroot and Cooley, they're going to figure this out.
1:20:00
Vegoe
They're going to win this game.
1:20:02
Vegoe
And more often than not, they did.
1:20:04
Vegoe
I feel like they had the most extra attacker goals that season.
1:20:07
Vegoe
I'm sure Gopher game notes would know exactly how many they had, but it seemed like they had like five or six.
1:20:14
Vegoe
So pretty impressive.
1:20:19
Vegoe
And I've seen, but I've also seen the Ducks do some interesting things with their power play entries, where they have Lecombe kind of drive the net instead of a drop pass.
1:20:30
Vegoe
And they do like a slingshot, like really aggressive play.
1:20:33
Vegoe
And he's so good at that, you know, because he's got so much length and so much size and so much puck skills that he can go in there as like an F1 and win the puck and get them set up and create chances right away.
1:20:46
Jûpe ♃
Max, fellas, get your hands on Costco's Got That Dog in Me bourbon.
1:20:53
Jûpe ♃
I wish I haven't I haven't gone into Costco's liquor store lately.
1:20:57
Jûpe ♃
I mean, I was just going to walk by it.
1:20:59
Vegoe
I don't know if that made it to Minnesota.
1:21:02
Vegoe
I think it's a rare character bottling and it's like a barrel pick.
1:21:06
Vegoe
And they call it Got That Dog in Me.
1:21:08
Vegoe
And apparently people really liked it.
1:21:10
Vegoe
So it became super popular.
1:21:12
Vegoe
And on the secondary market, it's a little expensive because it's just all the things that are in the bourbon market that people love.
1:21:20
Vegoe
Catchy name, trendy, tastes rare.
1:21:24
Vegoe
You know, that's a tasty note.
1:21:27
Vegoe
Sometimes I was just happy.
1:21:28
Jûpe ♃
I was like, look at him like, I already get this bottle up.
1:21:30
Jûpe ♃
But I'm like, gosh, I've got your bottle.
1:21:33
Jûpe ♃
I want to touch that.
1:21:33
Jûpe ♃
And Barb got me another bottle, something else.
1:21:35
Jûpe ♃
And I looked under and I had that nice little cabinet.
1:21:38
Jûpe ♃
I'm like, I still got another full bottle of larceny, too.
1:21:41
Jûpe ♃
So I am looking good for this summer.
1:21:45
Jûpe ♃
I'm thinking tomorrow night's going to have to be a fire night.
1:21:47
Jûpe ♃
I mean, tonight would have been a great night for fire.
1:21:49
Jûpe ♃
But tomorrow night, I think it's going to be perfect.
1:21:52
Jûpe ♃
It's dry.
1:21:53
Jûpe ♃
It's a little cool.
1:21:54
Jûpe ♃
It gives you that fall feeling outside.
1:21:57
Jûpe ♃
It's looking good.
1:21:58
Jûpe ♃
Looking good.
1:22:03
Vegoe
Yeah.
1:22:03
Vegoe
Do you enjoy the wild games?
1:22:05
Jûpe ♃
Oh, yeah.
1:22:06
Jûpe ♃
It's nice.
1:22:07
Jûpe ♃
I get to watch them.
1:22:09
Jûpe ♃
I don't get whatever sports fan duel.
1:22:14
Vegoe
I think they're done.
1:22:16
Vegoe
They're done.
1:22:16
Jûpe ♃
All right.
1:22:17
Jûpe ♃
Correct.
1:22:18
Jûpe ♃
But luckily, these games have been on ESPN and TNT, TBS, and no blackouts, thankfully.
1:22:26
Jûpe ♃
So I've been able to watch those since I don't get those.
1:22:28
Jûpe ♃
I don't get a ballet.
1:22:29
Jûpe ♃
I keep calling it ballet.
1:22:34
Jûpe ♃
Fireside chat.
1:22:35
Jûpe ♃
I think that'd be fun.
1:22:37
Jûpe ♃
I don't have enough lighting out there.
1:22:41
Jûpe ♃
But what do you do?
1:22:43
Vegoe
I could pull up in the Civic and we could have the headlights from the Civic.
1:22:46
Jûpe ♃
Oh, my gosh.
1:22:48
Jûpe ♃
The Civic.
1:22:50
Vegoe
Actually, I sold the Civic, so.
1:22:53
Jûpe ♃
Oh, that was probably a while ago, wasn't it?
1:22:54
Vegoe
That was a while ago.
1:22:56
Vegoe
But I actually sold it like I sold it on Craig's List.
1:22:59
Jûpe ♃
Are you serious?
1:23:00
Jûpe ♃
Uh-huh.
1:23:01
Vegoe
I was not willing to take what the dealer was going to give me for it.
1:23:04
Vegoe
So I sold it by myself.
1:23:06
Jûpe ♃
Interesting.
1:23:07
Jûpe ♃
Interesting.
1:23:08
Jûpe ♃
Let me see here.
1:23:10
Vegoe
I'm an entrepreneur that way.
1:23:11
Vegoe
I'm going to hold out for maximum value.
1:23:14
Jûpe ♃
As you should.
1:23:16
Vegoe
I sold a set of golf clubs on Facebook Marketplace this month.
1:23:19
Jûpe ♃
How'd that go?
1:23:20
Vegoe
Upgraded.
1:23:22
Vegoe
I looked at my post.
1:23:24
Vegoe
I had like 1300 views on the listing.
1:23:29
Vegoe
I probably had like 15 people.
1:23:32
Vegoe
Like kind of offer and then want to negotiate lower.
1:23:37
Vegoe
And I got called mean things.
1:23:39
Vegoe
I got called a greedy bastard.
1:23:42
Vegoe
I had somebody said, no, you're trying to scam me.
1:23:45
Vegoe
And I was like, look, man, I don't need the money right now.
1:23:48
Vegoe
You know, I just I've got a good set of clubs.
1:23:51
Vegoe
I think this is a fair price.
1:23:54
Vegoe
That's that's how I do it.
1:23:55
Vegoe
And I ended up finally, finally getting them sold to a kid from Austin, Minnesota, who drove up to pick them up.
1:24:04
Jûpe ♃
And nice.
1:24:05
Vegoe
It worked out and he's happy.
1:24:08
Jûpe ♃
Facebook could be so, you know, you've seen the memes and the videos, you know, people, oh, I'm interested.
1:24:14
Jûpe ♃
I'll be there in two minutes.
1:24:15
Vegoe
Yeah.
1:24:16
Jûpe ♃
And or they disappear.
1:24:18
Jûpe ♃
It's just, it's just weird stuff.
1:24:20
Jûpe ♃
You know, I saw this post from Moate.
1:24:22
Jûpe ♃
So I just had to bring it up a Friday.
1:24:24
Jûpe ♃
Wait, yeah, there we go.
1:24:24
Jûpe ♃
A Friday GPL.
1:24:26
Jûpe ♃
Jeez.
1:24:27
Jûpe ♃
I can drink beer on Fridays.
1:24:29
Jûpe ♃
That's F and go.
1:24:31
Jûpe ♃
And so I saved that for earlier.
1:24:33
Jûpe ♃
Thanks Moate.
1:24:34
Jûpe ♃
It was great seeing you again this year.
1:24:37
Jûpe ♃
And yeah, you met him this year too, didn't you, Vig?
1:24:40
Jûpe ♃
So, oh yeah, I'll do is we got Moate always here.
1:24:47
Jûpe ♃
What's oh, yeah.
1:24:48
Jûpe ♃
So let's bring up Max's here.
1:24:50
Jûpe ♃
You know, you can kind of see new sticks.
1:24:52
Jûpe ♃
What are we swinging?
1:24:52
Vegoe
Yeah, I got some Mizuno JPX 925 high launch irons.
1:24:59
Vegoe
I need all the height I can get as I'm getting older.
1:25:02
Vegoe
And I've got my tennis elbow.
1:25:04
Vegoe
I'm not swinging it quite like I used to in my my 30s or 20s.
1:25:07
Vegoe
So it's time to retire the the old JPX Mizuno's.
1:25:12
Vegoe
And I got C taper light shafts in them, which I really like.
1:25:17
Vegoe
Good feel.
1:25:18
Vegoe
I played a round at Edinburgh Golf Course on Thursday.
1:25:24
Vegoe
Smooth 85 with four balls in the water.
1:25:28
Vegoe
So pretty good score.
1:25:29
Vegoe
I had nine one putts on the round.
1:25:31
Vegoe
So, yeah, it was a good round for me.
1:25:35
Vegoe
So first outdoor Minnesota round of the year, you know, an 85 with four penalty shots is a pretty good round, I think.
1:25:44
Jûpe ♃
That's good.
1:25:46
Vegoe
Yeah.
1:25:46
Vegoe
I'm excited for the season.
1:25:47
Jûpe ♃
When does the course close?
1:25:50
Vegoe
The course is closed at the U.
1:25:51
Jûpe ♃
It's already closed.
1:25:52
Jûpe ♃
OK.
1:25:53
Vegoe
Yeah, they shut it down.
1:25:54
Jûpe ♃
So they didn't open for this season.
1:25:55
Jûpe ♃
They essentially last season.
1:25:58
Vegoe
Yeah, it looks beautiful out there.
1:26:00
Vegoe
They uncovered the greens.
1:26:01
Vegoe
You know, it just looks lush out there.
1:26:04
Vegoe
I've heard some people will go out there and play a hole or two, even though there's no cups or anything or pins.
1:26:09
Vegoe
But shame.
1:26:11
Vegoe
Driving range close could be making, you know, the the U a million bucks and providing thirty five thousand rounds to golfers.
1:26:20
Vegoe
But the U apparently is not interested in keeping the golf course running, even though they don't have a buyer yet for the property.
1:26:29
Vegoe
So great source of frustration.
1:26:31
Jûpe ♃
I like why don't they just stay open?
1:26:34
Vegoe
Good question.
1:26:35
Vegoe
Do you?
1:26:36
Vegoe
Sorry, I just because they need to prove that the soil is contaminated with mercury for the buyers and they can't have a golf course in operation and do all that stuff.
1:26:46
Vegoe
It's like, of course, it's contaminated.
1:26:48
Vegoe
They put chemicals into it for 97 years.
1:26:54
Jûpe ♃
That may have been my last round of golf was on that for a Rubes Day and I birdied 18 on that day.
1:27:01
Vegoe
I'm a great 35, 35 footer, probably.
1:27:08
Jûpe ♃
Is he the one who did the video that day?
1:27:10
Jûpe ♃
Or is Picardio's P joined or Pregardio did?
1:27:12
Jûpe ♃
I think.
1:27:15
Vegoe
I think it might have been Sprague.
1:27:17
Jûpe ♃
You know what, now that you say that, I do believe it was Sprague.
1:27:21
Vegoe
I walked it in from Long Range.
1:27:25
Vegoe
Made a lot of good putts at that course.
1:27:26
Vegoe
So.
1:27:28
Jûpe ♃
Sad day, sad times.
1:27:30
Vegoe
Sad, sad golf season.
1:27:32
Vegoe
Cause I don't, Highland National was a course I looked at.
1:27:35
Vegoe
They're full for their men's club.
1:27:37
Vegoe
I looked at Keller Golf Club.
1:27:39
Vegoe
They're full like with a 10 year waiting list.
1:27:41
Vegoe
And you know, it's tough to find a good golf course these days.
1:27:46
Jûpe ♃
Yeah.
1:27:48
Jûpe ♃
I wouldn't know.
1:27:49
Vegoe
I'm a free agent.
1:27:50
Vegoe
I'm going to be all over the place.
1:27:53
Vegoe
GPLers want to play.
1:27:54
Vegoe
Hey, DMs are open.
1:27:56
Jûpe ♃
You know, I have somebody I cannot remember somebody who's a golf pro.
1:28:02
Jûpe ♃
Which has reached out to us.
1:28:04
Jûpe ♃
Was it by email or Twitter?
1:28:08
Jûpe ♃
They wanted to golf with us.
1:28:09
Jûpe ♃
And I'm like, I don't golf, but you do.
1:28:11
Jûpe ♃
I have to look that up so you can get some golf in.
1:28:15
Vegoe
I'll play.
1:28:15
Vegoe
I think my strategy is to take a day off every two or three weeks and play around with some people.
1:28:21
Vegoe
So weekday golf, I'm all about it.
1:28:24
Jûpe ♃
Oh, yeah, that's what I mean.
1:28:26
Jûpe ♃
There's people, but there's a lot less people.
1:28:29
Vegoe
Golf courses are busy, man.
1:28:31
Vegoe
Since covid rounds are up, courses are busy, like trying to make a weekend tea time in the Twin Cities.
1:28:37
Vegoe
It's hard.
1:28:38
Jûpe ♃
When I was 12 years old, spending a summer on a military base in New Jersey.
1:28:43
Jûpe ♃
Picatinny Arsenal, the big 18-hole golf course on the base.
1:28:50
Jûpe ♃
Monday's day was, Monday was always officer's day.
1:28:53
Jûpe ♃
That's when officers could use the course.
1:28:58
Jûpe ♃
They're working.
1:29:01
Jûpe ♃
So we used to just go grab a couple, you know, we'd grab some, you know, okay, grab an iron, grab a wood, grab, grab just three, three or four clubs total for the two of us.
1:29:12
Jûpe ♃
And we would just go start at the second hall.
1:29:14
Jûpe ♃
No one could see us and just play all week by 17.
1:29:18
Jûpe ♃
So we didn't get hung up with anything.
1:29:21
Jûpe ♃
And we would just say, hey, here's a, you know, we just share the clubs and just played.
1:29:27
Jûpe ♃
And cause there was nobody out there, but no, that's what I remember.
1:29:33
Jûpe ♃
Didn't have a full clubs, weren't paying.
1:29:35
Jûpe ♃
We were just out there whacking the ball around.
1:29:37
Jûpe ♃
And of course when there was nobody because it was an officer's day and only they could golf.
1:29:42
Vegoe
Yeah, I think I played a military course in San Diego called Medal of Honor Golf Course.
1:29:49
Vegoe
And my buddy took me out there as a Marine said, hey, Medal of Honor Golf Course, no cheating.
1:29:54
Vegoe
Okay, whatever you do, no cheating out here today.
1:29:57
Vegoe
I think he proceeded to cheat a little bit in our match.
1:30:05
Jûpe ♃
Oh boy.
1:30:06
Vegoe
Cheers to the captain.
1:30:08
Jûpe ♃
You know, I think Max might be a good guest for the Duluth series next year.
1:30:15
Vegoe
Yeah, he better keep his What do you think, Max?
1:30:20
Jûpe ♃
Keep that Wednesday open before that series in Duluth?
1:30:25
Jûpe ♃
I was looking at hotel rooms and I'm staying in Duluth doesn't look like much of an option.
1:30:30
Jûpe ♃
It's MEA weekend.
1:30:32
Jûpe ♃
We stayed at the Indian Inn before last last season, I guess, well, two seasons ago, and it was cheapest.
1:30:39
Jûpe ♃
It was under 300 a night.
1:30:40
Jûpe ♃
Now it's over 400 a night.
1:30:44
Jûpe ♃
Basically, no, it was I'm sorry, it was under 200.
1:30:47
Jûpe ♃
I think it was 1898 a night.
1:30:51
Jûpe ♃
And now it's like 420 or something.
1:30:53
Jûpe ♃
I'm like, 420, interesting, 422.
1:31:00
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, Max, I think we could use to lose guests, get you down the show.
1:31:07
Jûpe ♃
If you're up for it, we'll see if he replies here.
1:31:10
Vegoe
We'll see if MN and CWA will allow that kind of agency.
1:31:17
Jûpe ♃
We accept all people.
1:31:19
Vegoe
Yeah, Nick and Scott can't get too mad.
1:31:21
Jûpe ♃
We accept even Brett Larson.
1:31:22
Jûpe ♃
We accept Brett Larson.
1:31:24
Vegoe
He's one of us now.
1:31:26
Jûpe ♃
He is.
1:31:27
Jûpe ♃
You guys follow the Fargo Force.
1:31:30
Jûpe ♃
You guys can kind of see the chat going on here.
1:31:32
Jûpe ♃
I don't have to put them all up.
1:31:33
Jûpe ♃
I can keep drinking.
1:31:35
Vegoe
Yeah, I mean, I don't follow it super close.
1:31:40
Vegoe
I'm choosing to spend my free time right now at The Wild for the most part.
1:31:44
Jûpe ♃
Yeah.
1:31:45
Vegoe
So mostly watching highlights right now.
1:31:48
Vegoe
There was one year where I followed the USHL a little bit closer, but haven't lately.
1:31:56
Jûpe ♃
Oh, funny.
1:31:57
Jûpe ♃
It's not updating as much.
1:32:03
Jûpe ♃
Odds the Wild and Wolves make the finals.
1:32:06
Jûpe ♃
I think the Wild, if they can get past Colorado, it looks good.
1:32:10
Jûpe ♃
Wolves.
1:32:11
Jûpe ♃
Oh, so many injuries with the Wolves.
1:32:13
Jûpe ♃
I'm not watching the games, but I hear it's it's injury central.
1:32:18
Vegoe
Yeah, I enjoyed the game last night.
1:32:23
Vegoe
Last night.
1:32:23
Vegoe
Yeah, already.
1:32:26
Vegoe
So that was fun to watch.
1:32:27
Vegoe
But I think without Anthony Edwards, they're going to be a tough spot.
1:32:31
Vegoe
Whereas The Wild, man, they looked so good against Dallas.
1:32:36
Vegoe
Like it's just they ran up against one of the NHL history best power play units, which was hard to shut down.
1:32:45
Vegoe
I was a little shocked how easily it seemed like Dallas could score on the power play and how they couldn't score on five on five, though.
1:32:52
Vegoe
Right.
1:32:53
Vegoe
It was curious.
1:32:54
Vegoe
Like, it just seemed like Wallstatt wasn't reading the plays.
1:33:00
Vegoe
I think so much in the power play.
1:33:02
Vegoe
You need a goalie who can anticipate what the power play is trying to do almost more than just be a good goalie.
1:33:10
Vegoe
So it was kind of surprising he didn't have that to his game to be the best penalty killer on the team, because I think sometimes that's just what it comes down to is a goalie who's aggressive with his reads and figures it out.
1:33:24
Vegoe
Maybe it's because he's so young, he doesn't have that to his game yet.
1:33:29
Vegoe
And that was kind of a critical part of the series.
1:33:31
Vegoe
But when they got five on five, he could be his normal self and was really solid.
1:33:40
Vegoe
So man, Quinn Hughes, so good.
1:33:44
Jûpe ♃
I'll be around and happy to be.
1:33:46
Jûpe ♃
Come on.
1:33:49
Jûpe ♃
Come on, man.
1:33:51
Vegoe
We had too many people in this industry who don't have the self-confidence of.
1:33:58
Jûpe ♃
Come on, man.
1:34:00
Vegoe
Like, hey, say, hey, I'm the expert.
1:34:04
Jûpe ♃
And I'm not an expert.
1:34:06
Jûpe ♃
That's Viggs.
1:34:06
Jûpe ♃
I let Viggs be the expert.
1:34:09
Jûpe ♃
We always new guests are fun.
1:34:12
Jûpe ♃
We like new guests.
1:34:15
Vegoe
But I think the Wilds have a great chance to play Carolina in the finals.
1:34:19
Vegoe
So I think Colorado will be a fun series and could be a deep one again.
1:34:23
Vegoe
But I'm not scared of the Ducks or Vegas or Utah.
1:34:29
Vegoe
Tell you that.
1:34:33
Vegoe
Although Utah gave the Wilds some problems this year, which was surprising.
1:34:37
Jûpe ♃
Well, you never know what the Coln though, too, and the Ducks.
1:34:41
Jûpe ♃
Edmonton, what?
1:34:42
Vegoe
Brock knows how to shut them down.
1:34:46
Jûpe ♃
Okay.
1:34:46
Jûpe ♃
Well, so we know Faber wasn't on the ice for.
1:34:51
Vegoe
We'll just talk about that.
1:34:52
Vegoe
We'll just talk about that.
1:34:53
Vegoe
The whole series.
1:34:54
Jûpe ♃
I think the Coln was on the ice, wasn't he?
1:34:56
Vegoe
He was.
1:34:57
Vegoe
And he did not make the proper read, probably.
1:35:01
Vegoe
Not that we're just going to talk about that play for the rest of our lives, but we might.
1:35:06
Jûpe ♃
Why not?
1:35:07
Vegoe
Why not?
1:35:08
Jûpe ♃
We're drinking on a Friday night.
1:35:09
Jûpe ♃
Vigs were having fun.
1:35:10
Jûpe ♃
How was the pizza today?
1:35:11
Jûpe ♃
What kind of pizza did you make?
1:35:13
Vegoe
Pizza was simple as a pepperoni, red onion and a lot of spice.
1:35:19
Vegoe
On my slices, a lot of red pepper, a lot of spicy special kind of a spicy special didn't have the peppers on it, but it was tasty.
1:35:29
Vegoe
It was good.
1:35:31
Vegoe
I'm mixing a little bit more olive oil into my dough to give it a little bit more crisp and get a little more.
1:35:39
Vegoe
No.
1:35:41
Vegoe
No flop on the crust, which I think everyone's liking.
1:35:45
Vegoe
So so it's been good.
1:35:46
Vegoe
We're almost ready to start doing grilled pizzas in my house.
1:35:51
Vegoe
So we're getting close.
1:35:52
Vegoe
My grill needs a little bit of repair, though.
1:35:56
Jûpe ♃
Why grills do not last long anymore.
1:35:59
Vegoe
Yeah, that's a long time.
1:36:01
Vegoe
Like the soldering on the on the tripod stand, one of them came loose and I tried to get like some bronzer and a map torch and I cannot do this right.
1:36:16
Vegoe
Like it has to be just right to fix it.
1:36:18
Vegoe
So I'm going to have to go to a professional.
1:36:20
Vegoe
So I spent the 50 bucks to try to DIY it and I could not accomplish the task.
1:36:25
Jûpe ♃
I think you're going to have to use the big GPL podcast money to get yourself a new Weber grill.
1:36:33
Jûpe ♃
That millions and millions of earnings.
1:36:38
Vegoe
Yeah, that and then I'll grill some Cub Foods Pub Burgers on it with the money they gave me.
1:36:45
Jûpe ♃
We've been doing a...
1:36:48
Jûpe ♃
Barb's been picking up like this non-bread kind of flat things.
1:36:56
Jûpe ♃
From Aldi, garlic.
1:36:58
Jûpe ♃
Oh yeah.
1:36:59
Jûpe ♃
Just like a non-bread garlic, but you know, sometimes they're little, sometimes they're big.
1:37:04
Jûpe ♃
Depends what Aldi has.
1:37:05
Jûpe ♃
It's all these like that, sorry.
1:37:07
Jûpe ♃
I didn't have a Cub and she would just go in there and grab this stuff.
1:37:10
Jûpe ♃
And just put a little pizza sauce on there.
1:37:13
Jûpe ♃
I just put a little sausage, a little pepperoni.
1:37:16
Jûpe ♃
Dang.
1:37:17
Jûpe ♃
Oh, little Italian season.
1:37:18
Jûpe ♃
I like a little Italian seasoning on there.
1:37:21
Jûpe ♃
Sometimes a little garlic.
1:37:24
Vegoe
Non-bread, you could get away with the fresh mozzarella because you're not so worried about the moisture content on that.
1:37:31
Vegoe
Give that a shot.
1:37:32
Jûpe ♃
It's been working really good.
1:37:34
Vegoe
Yeah.
1:37:35
Vegoe
I've been making my own non-bread lately with a little bit of plain yogurt.
1:37:41
Vegoe
It's pretty good.
1:37:44
Jûpe ♃
Nice.
1:37:44
Jûpe ♃
Oh, Capy on ESPN.
1:37:46
Jûpe ♃
Yes.
1:37:48
Jûpe ♃
Trying to read this crust.
1:37:50
Jûpe ♃
Highly recommended.
1:37:53
Jûpe ♃
So I'm just reading some of the texts here.
1:37:54
Vegoe
Yeah.
1:37:55
Vegoe
Fat Louis.
1:37:57
Jûpe ♃
I'm not sure what you mean.
1:37:59
Jûpe ♃
I'm not into the THC.
1:38:02
Jûpe ♃
I'm not into the drinks.
1:38:04
Jûpe ♃
Did I say something?
1:38:07
Vegoe
I missed it.
1:38:07
Vegoe
I might have been watching Eric Johnson between the benches.
1:38:11
Jûpe ♃
Oh, is he between the benches tonight?
1:38:13
Vegoe
Yeah.
1:38:15
Vegoe
I think he's going to go down three buttons in the shirt at some point this game.
1:38:20
Vegoe
He's got the two already.
1:38:22
Vegoe
I think you might.
1:38:23
Jûpe ♃
Yeah.
1:38:24
Jûpe ♃
But is he checked out tonight?
1:38:26
Jûpe ♃
Because, you know, he's all about the Derby tomorrow.
1:38:29
Vegoe
There's no reason like he's in like a pastel blue.
1:38:33
Vegoe
I think that could be for Utah as well.
1:38:35
Jûpe ♃
So I was hoping he'd come to Minnesota, but he hates the Minnesota fans, doesn't he?
1:38:41
Jûpe ♃
The wild fans.
1:38:42
Jûpe ♃
I don't know if he's, you know, he praised Minnesota a lot when he worked at least one game, I believe.
1:38:48
Vegoe
Yeah, I think as a player, he didn't.
1:38:50
Jûpe ♃
But does he?
1:38:51
Jûpe ♃
He doesn't.
1:38:55
Jûpe ♃
I don't ever hear him.
1:38:56
Jûpe ♃
I see him retweet like Denver hockey stuff and not Minnesota stuff.
1:39:00
Jûpe ♃
I'm like, are you not a Minnesota guy?
1:39:02
Jûpe ♃
Because yeah, you were you were a Minnesota guy.
1:39:06
Vegoe
He's a one and done, right?
1:39:08
Jûpe ♃
He was a one and done.
1:39:09
Jûpe ♃
He was the number one overall pick.
1:39:13
Jûpe ♃
But that was like the first, the only go for number one overall pick.
1:39:19
Jûpe ♃
Was that the first in college hockey, though, where he number one overall pick played?
1:39:27
Vegoe
I don't know for sure.
1:39:30
Jûpe ♃
That wasn't that was 2006.
1:39:33
Vegoe
Tom Valesky or Brad Schlossman on the answer.
1:39:35
Jûpe ♃
That was 2006.
1:39:38
Vegoe
That was in the heyday of, you know, transitioning from rubed to writer.
1:39:45
Jûpe ♃
That was my first year covering.
1:39:48
Jûpe ♃
First I would get partial, you know, I would get individual game credentials through the former SID, Kevin Kurt, who's a great guy.
1:40:02
Jûpe ♃
I saw I was posting today's kids going to Ferris State on a golf thing.
1:40:07
Jûpe ♃
Golf management.
1:40:08
Jûpe ♃
I'm like, good for you.
1:40:09
Vegoe
Good for you.
1:40:10
Jûpe ♃
But then I just hear that his kid's going to school, graduation.
1:40:12
Jûpe ♃
I'm like, oh my gosh.
1:40:17
Jûpe ♃
Oh, I'm getting old.
1:40:18
Jûpe ♃
These I'm getting old.
1:40:21
Vegoe
Yeah, I'm getting old.
1:40:22
Vegoe
I've got an 11 13 year old.
1:40:24
Vegoe
When did that happen?
1:40:28
Jûpe ♃
My youngest daughter turns 23 tomorrow.
1:40:32
Vegoe
Yeah, I was just looking at costs for Bantam Hockey next year and trying to figure that out.
1:40:39
Vegoe
That might be where the GPL monies could go next year.
1:40:43
Vegoe
Two grand for hockey registration fees.
1:40:45
Jûpe ♃
Oh, man, that's I'm sorry.
1:40:47
Jûpe ♃
It's so expensive.
1:40:48
Jûpe ♃
That's just it's OK.
1:40:50
Vegoe
It's a lot of fun.
1:40:52
Jûpe ♃
True, but still expensive.
1:40:54
Jûpe ♃
Very expensive.
1:40:55
Vegoe
Yeah, it's OK.
1:40:57
Jûpe ♃
And think about I mean.
1:41:01
Jûpe ♃
You're not doing overboard, you're not doing all this huge traveling teams.
1:41:07
Jûpe ♃
I mean, so your costs are high, but compared to what other families put money into.
1:41:18
Vegoe
Yeah, like I'm not trying to.
1:41:19
Vegoe
I'm my kid to the brick and I'm not sending my kid to the silver stick or, you know, when almost summer showdowns and stuff or the spring league king of the whatever.
1:41:31
Vegoe
Just that's not we're playing baseball now.
1:41:34
Jûpe ♃
It's like, and how's that going?
1:41:38
Vegoe
It's going great.
1:41:39
Vegoe
You know, there's been a couple of games where my son now is playing on the big field with ninety fit bases and sixty feet, six inches from.
1:41:46
Jûpe ♃
Oh, that's a big change.
1:41:49
Jûpe ♃
That's a big change.
1:41:51
Vegoe
This summer, he's going to have to adjust to the drop three bat down from the drop ten, I think.
1:41:58
Vegoe
So that'll be interesting to see how that goes.
1:42:02
Vegoe
But he's enjoying it.
1:42:04
Vegoe
So having fun.
1:42:05
Jûpe ♃
I never got to that level.
1:42:08
Jûpe ♃
I'm not a baseball fan, but I did play two summers of baseball.
1:42:13
Jûpe ♃
I mentioned those years I was in New Jersey, 11 and 12, played little league baseball for the military base team.
1:42:24
Jûpe ♃
That's the last time I played baseball.
1:42:28
Jûpe ♃
But we did take a field trip as a 12-year-old to the Little League World Series in Williamsport.
1:42:38
Jûpe ♃
Got to play a game in the stadium where all the final games are played.
1:42:46
Vegoe
That's cool.
1:42:49
Jûpe ♃
They've updated a lot and changed it, but back then they had individual cabins and stuff like that for each team.
1:42:56
Jûpe ♃
We were in the Far East cabin.
1:42:59
Jûpe ♃
So it would have been like, I guess, Chinese Taipei or whoever would have been.
1:43:03
Jûpe ♃
Now that I hear, they've got a huge dorm rooms and they all get to interact and whatnot.
1:43:08
Jûpe ♃
But that was my last baseball game that I ever played was at Williamsport.
1:43:17
Jûpe ♃
Not that we qualified, but I got my last baseball game ever was played on a legendary field.
1:43:26
Jûpe ♃
I feel very fortunate to have done that.
1:43:31
Vegoe
I played two seasons of Minnesota Townball for a team called the Webster Sox down in the Dakota Rice Scott.
1:43:40
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
1:43:42
Vegoe
Like a little German restaurant in town where we'd go to after practice sometimes and have maybe some beverages.
1:43:48
Jûpe ♃
Did you go to the the the the the supper club?
1:43:52
Vegoe
Yeah, the supper club down there in Webster.
1:43:55
Jûpe ♃
So that was that was for just Barb and I have been talking about trying to get back to the web.
1:43:59
Jûpe ♃
We went there a year, year and a half ago.
1:44:02
Jûpe ♃
Good food.
1:44:03
Jûpe ♃
Good stuff.
1:44:05
Vegoe
Yeah, it was fun.
1:44:06
Vegoe
They had three to beer at the baseball field that people would have afterwards and stuff.
1:44:11
Vegoe
And it was my it was my ACL recovery motivation, because I had some friends from St.
1:44:17
Vegoe
Olaf who played on the team and got to got to rehab and come back and knew that for a couple of years.
1:44:25
Vegoe
But the driving was a bit much from the metro down there to practice.
1:44:30
Vegoe
But it was fun.
1:44:31
Jûpe ♃
Did you play at Norwood?
1:44:33
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, in America, because I was I guess I would have been on the Young America.
1:44:37
Jûpe ♃
Norwood, Young America had two teams, two stadiums.
1:44:42
Jûpe ♃
Where I lived in Norwood, Young America was I could, you know, where you remember why I used to do my podcast, I could literally look out the window and see the lights because it was a block away from my house for I guess the Young America side, which is the South side.
1:45:01
Jûpe ♃
A lot of town ball, a lot of town ball is so big in what you get out of the cities.
1:45:06
Jûpe ♃
I think Chaska might be the kind of the closest team that kind of has town ball.
1:45:12
Vegoe
Chaska have like the mini mat.
1:45:15
Vegoe
Is that what they have?
1:45:16
Vegoe
Because I feel like I played there once.
1:45:18
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, the only problem is is that they may have fixed it since then, but they were on the wrong side of the River Dyke.
1:45:27
Jûpe ♃
So when it flooded down there, they were screwed.
1:45:32
Jûpe ♃
But all right, what are you opening up here?
1:45:36
Vegoe
I'm gonna have a little pour of this.
1:45:37
Jûpe ♃
Oh, look at that.
1:45:39
Jûpe ♃
It is Friday.
1:45:41
Vegoe
This is a 10 year whiskey row from Old Forester.
1:45:45
Vegoe
It's one of their 100 proof releases, 10 year.
1:45:49
Jûpe ♃
Is that Dennis Forester?
1:45:52
Vegoe
No.
1:45:54
Vegoe
Denny.
1:45:55
Jûpe ♃
Denny.
1:45:55
Jûpe ♃
I like Denny.
1:45:56
Jûpe ♃
I haven't seen him in a while.
1:45:57
Jûpe ♃
That's good, dude.
1:46:00
Vegoe
So.
1:46:00
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, I'm a real good dude.
1:46:02
Vegoe
I'm gonna have a little whiskey with you.
1:46:04
Vegoe
Good dark color.
1:46:07
Vegoe
Mine's a little darker than yours.
1:46:09
Jûpe ♃
Smells really good.
1:46:10
Jûpe ♃
My ice has melted, but you know.
1:46:16
Vegoe
Like brown sugar, baking spice.
1:46:18
Jûpe ♃
You know, mine's not a lot different in color.
1:46:21
Jûpe ♃
Like I said, mine is my ice is completely melted, so it's the color is not too different.
1:46:33
Jûpe ♃
Makes for great podcasting.
1:46:36
Vegoe
Yeah.
1:46:37
Vegoe
Yeah, rich, almost like a little tobacco taste to it.
1:46:42
Vegoe
Just like the good tobacco taste, not like the Marlboro.
1:46:45
Jûpe ♃
Good tobacco?
1:46:46
Jûpe ♃
Come on.
1:46:48
Vegoe
Yeah, just like, you know, rich, leathery, I don't know.
1:46:54
Vegoe
It's good.
1:46:56
Vegoe
Long, long aftertaste, good body.
1:47:02
Vegoe
More whiskey.
1:47:03
Vegoe
Yeah, good job, old Forster.
1:47:05
Vegoe
These 10 year 1924s are great.
1:47:09
Jûpe ♃
So I looked at the bottle in the wall.
1:47:11
Jûpe ♃
What is it that you gave me?
1:47:13
Jûpe ♃
It was Eagle.
1:47:15
Vegoe
Eagle Rare from when I went down to Buffalo Trace.
1:47:18
Jûpe ♃
Yep, yep.
1:47:18
Vegoe
So I bought a couple bottles that they had at the distillery that day.
1:47:24
Vegoe
So that's one from the source for you.
1:47:29
Vegoe
Thank you for all you do to make GPL Podcast.
1:47:34
Jûpe ♃
I'm going to have to open it on a show sometime.
1:47:38
Jûpe ♃
But I really want to save it for a good occasion.
1:47:42
Vegoe
So I mean, it's not super, super rare.
1:47:46
Jûpe ♃
It's just for the last couple of years.
1:47:48
Jûpe ♃
It's the sentimental.
1:47:50
Jûpe ♃
You gave it to me.
1:47:51
Jûpe ♃
It's from you.
1:47:52
Jûpe ♃
I appreciate it.
1:47:54
Jûpe ♃
I want to celebrate it on a show where it has some meaning.
1:47:59
Jûpe ♃
That's kind of what it's all about.
1:48:01
Vegoe
OK.
1:48:05
Jûpe ♃
Oh, yeah, this is hitting me good.
1:48:06
Jûpe ♃
Eagle Rare is basically 10 year old Buffalo.
1:48:11
Jûpe ♃
It is.
1:48:11
Vegoe
They have Buffalo Trace has like two mash bills and then just a lot of different selecting aging warehousing to make it different.
1:48:23
Vegoe
So.
1:48:24
Jûpe ♃
So what's going on this summer, Viggs?
1:48:28
Vegoe
Well, I start besides baseball.
1:48:30
Jûpe ♃
Do you get any vacations?
1:48:32
Vegoe
You know, with the coaching, it keeps us pretty busy.
1:48:37
Vegoe
I am going to go to.
1:48:39
Vegoe
IMSA at Road America this summer.
1:48:42
Vegoe
My son is really into car racing.
1:48:45
Vegoe
Oh, yeah.
1:48:45
Vegoe
So this is the it was like the endurance racing track in Wisconsin.
1:48:51
Vegoe
We're going to we're going to stay at Airbnb in Plymouth and we're going to spend all day at the racetrack watching cars go around for like an eight hour race, I think is what it is.
1:49:03
Vegoe
I'm not sure my son can have all the details.
1:49:06
Jûpe ♃
It sounds like pure bonding to me.
1:49:08
Jûpe ♃
That sounds awesome.
1:49:10
Vegoe
We're going with my father-in-law and my wife's uncles or my uncle-in-law.
1:49:16
Vegoe
And yeah, we're going to do that.
1:49:18
Vegoe
We got a golf cart because we can drive around to different spots at the track, so it'll be interesting.
1:49:28
Jûpe ♃
I get to stock up on Buffalo Trace in a week.
1:49:30
Jûpe ♃
Good for you, Puckhound.
1:49:32
Jûpe ♃
Yeah.
1:49:34
Jûpe ♃
Is that one of Tom's aliases?
1:49:37
Vegoe
It's probably one of Tom's aliases.
1:49:40
Jûpe ♃
Is that you, Tom?
1:49:41
Vegoe
1529 stands for, but...
1:49:45
Jûpe ♃
You know, I was about a year ago, or I think sometime during the season, all of a sudden YouTube just started adding a bunch of numbers for people.
1:49:53
Vegoe
Okay.
1:49:53
Jûpe ♃
It's been weird.
1:49:56
Vegoe
Yeah, so Buffalo Trace is great.
1:49:58
Vegoe
So, I mean, their stuff is highly sought after.
1:50:01
Vegoe
A lot of it's allocated.
1:50:03
Vegoe
It is opening up.
1:50:04
Vegoe
I've seen more EH.
1:50:05
Vegoe
Taylor, Bourbon in the Twin Cities that I think I've ever seen since my 20s.
1:50:12
Vegoe
It's a 100-proof Bourbon from Buffalo Trace, whereas Eagle Rare, wow, that's fire, dude.
1:50:22
Vegoe
No, no, it's not.
1:50:24
Vegoe
The Stakes I got were like 130 proof.
1:50:26
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, mine is only 90 proof tonight, but see that I didn't really have dinner.
1:50:34
Vegoe
I think the Eagle Rare is 90 proof, maybe.
1:50:37
Vegoe
I'm not sure.
1:50:38
Vegoe
I'm not I act like an expert, but I don't know all the details.
1:50:42
Vegoe
I just know it's good.
1:50:44
Vegoe
And then I think Buffalo Trace is like 86 proof.
1:50:47
Jûpe ♃
I would say I approve this four roses that Barb got for me.
1:50:52
Vegoe
Good job, Barb.
1:50:54
Jûpe ♃
It's delicious.
1:50:56
Vegoe
Four roses is great stuff.
1:50:59
Jûpe ♃
I never had four.
1:51:00
Jûpe ♃
She just went, she was at a liquor store.
1:51:02
Jûpe ♃
She's like, my guy's into a little bit into whiskey.
1:51:06
Jûpe ♃
What can I get for him?
1:51:06
Jûpe ♃
She got it for me.
1:51:08
Jûpe ♃
She's the best.
1:51:12
Vegoe
Meanwhile, my wife goes, is it a good thing that your liquor stores donate for auction items for youth hockey group?
1:51:19
Jûpe ♃
It's like, I mean, hey, you'll take all the donations you can.
1:51:24
Vegoe
I'll take all the donations.
1:51:26
Jûpe ♃
Yeah.
1:51:28
Vegoe
I'm just all about making hockey affordable in North and Northeast Minneapolis and Columbia Heights and Fridley and.
1:51:33
Jûpe ♃
Damn right.
1:51:34
Jûpe ♃
St.
1:51:34
Jûpe ♃
Paul.
1:51:35
Vegoe
You know, Columbia, that's what we do.
1:51:39
Jûpe ♃
What is at the old Columbia Arena now?
1:51:42
Jûpe ♃
What is there?
1:51:43
Jûpe ♃
I haven't been there.
1:51:44
Jûpe ♃
I've seen years.
1:51:46
Jûpe ♃
We had some Rube games there.
1:51:47
Jûpe ♃
We did have Rube games there.
1:51:49
Vegoe
Is there's a picture of there was a picture of me and let's play hockey with just tremendous bucket flow with that arena.
1:51:59
Vegoe
And it was just like, you know, someone was there and they're just like meat line needs to be documented.
1:52:05
Vegoe
And I had the full bucket flow coming out the helmet.
1:52:08
Vegoe
It was just, it was gorgeous.
1:52:10
Vegoe
I think I cut it out of the paper and I put it up at my desk at work.
1:52:14
Jûpe ♃
That's so good.
1:52:16
Jûpe ♃
But is it like some kind of like apartments or buildings?
1:52:19
Jûpe ♃
It's probably, probably office park, you know, it was kind of a, it did end up being kind of a dump, but we did have quite a few, well, at least a couple of times a season, a Rube Games there until they shut her down.
1:52:32
Jûpe ♃
So that was cool.
1:52:37
Jûpe ♃
I'm not a Mighty Ducks movie kind of guy.
1:52:41
Jûpe ♃
I it's OK.
1:52:44
Jûpe ♃
I just.
1:52:48
Jûpe ♃
There's only a couple of hockey movies I really like.
1:52:50
Jûpe ♃
I don't like it when they make arenas dark and they could put spotlights and players.
1:52:55
Jûpe ♃
I'm like going, that's not how hockey is played.
1:53:00
Jûpe ♃
I don't know, just bitter.
1:53:03
Vegoe
Party of one.
1:53:05
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, I know.
1:53:06
Jûpe ♃
Party of getting drunk on a Friday night.
1:53:15
Jûpe ♃
Smith, does he end up here?
1:53:18
Vegoe
I don't think so.
1:53:19
Vegoe
I mean, here's the thing.
1:53:21
Jûpe ♃
What's the other guy's name?
1:53:23
Vegoe
He's not gonna be here for multiple years, likely.
1:53:29
Vegoe
Maybe two at the most.
1:53:31
Jûpe ♃
If that.
1:53:32
Jûpe ♃
So, maybe with his injury, he might be not even starting in the fall.
1:53:37
Vegoe
Right, so you just don't wanna waste a roster spot these days on a player who's injured coming in.
1:53:42
Vegoe
Maybe if you have a player coming back, who you know what you got, you do that, but I don't think you'd do that with a player injured coming in these days.
1:53:51
Vegoe
You can always add him halfway through the year too.
1:53:54
Vegoe
You know, like if he's gonna be injured for the first half of the year, maybe you wait and say, we'll keep a roster spot open and maybe we'll add you halfway through the year, but it doesn't make sense to me to bring him if he is really hurt and he's gonna miss time.
1:54:11
Jûpe ♃
Will DuPont play college hockey next year?
1:54:15
Vegoe
I think he will.
1:54:17
Vegoe
Question is where?
1:54:21
Vegoe
I don't think it's gonna be Denver.
1:54:22
Vegoe
I don't think it's gonna be Michigan.
1:54:24
Jûpe ♃
So really, Michigan is a good place.
1:54:27
Vegoe
But I don't think they have roster spots for him.
1:54:30
Jûpe ♃
Well now, but if it goes to 28.
1:54:36
Vegoe
Well, they don't have playing time for him is what I'm saying.
1:54:41
Vegoe
Denver doesn't have playing time.
1:54:42
Vegoe
They just took some guys.
1:54:44
Vegoe
So they did.
1:54:47
Vegoe
I think North Dakota is probably your leader.
1:54:49
Vegoe
I think Penn State, of course, is in the mix.
1:54:53
Jûpe ♃
That worked out well for them.
1:54:57
Vegoe
I mean, it did for publicity.
1:55:00
Jûpe ♃
Okay.
1:55:01
Jûpe ♃
I will admit that, yes.
1:55:03
Vegoe
It's going to be, from Penn State University, the whatever pick, Kevin McKenna.
1:55:11
Vegoe
He's going to wear that Adidas hat on stage or something, you know?
1:55:19
Jûpe ♃
Oh, what have we got?
1:55:23
Jûpe ♃
Mariucci Maniacs, quit changing your damn name on Twitter.
1:55:28
Jûpe ♃
I know you're watching.
1:55:31
Jûpe ♃
Xcel Energy Extreme Mariucci Maniacs.
1:55:34
Jûpe ♃
Mariucci Maniacs.
1:55:36
Jûpe ♃
Just keep it, dude.
1:55:38
Jûpe ♃
Chill.
1:55:41
Jûpe ♃
Max, your Duluth Bulldogs returning Hobie Baker Award winner coming next year.
1:55:49
Jûpe ♃
The Plant Line.
1:55:53
Jûpe ♃
They're looking to be really good next year.
1:55:55
Jûpe ♃
That could be a really good series in Duluth.
1:55:59
Jûpe ♃
I think at that time, Minnesota might not have it together.
1:56:01
Jûpe ♃
They might get handed to them a little bit, but Duluth Bulldogs look good next year.
1:56:07
Jûpe ♃
I mean, come on, they got a returning Hobie Baker Award winner.
1:56:10
Jûpe ♃
That doesn't happen very often.
1:56:13
Vegoe
Look at what Minnesota is going to have next year.
1:56:15
Vegoe
They're going to be deep and old, and they have goalies coming deep and old.
1:56:20
Vegoe
I mean, who's Duluth going to have a goal?
1:56:24
Vegoe
They've got some question marks.
1:56:26
Vegoe
They could be good, but we don't know.
1:56:34
Vegoe
Hunter Shepard isn't even as uber to come to the ring.
1:56:37
Jûpe ♃
Hunter Shepard.
1:56:42
Vegoe
One of the best stories that Matt Wellens has ever written was about his uber rating.
1:56:56
Jûpe ♃
Let me tell you, getting drunk on a Friday night on a live podcast for the season finale, I love this, Viggs.
1:57:04
Jûpe ♃
We had wanted to do a kind of a Friday afternoon, what was it we were gonna do?
1:57:12
Vegoe
We were gonna do a happy hour.
1:57:13
Jûpe ♃
Happy hour, that's what we were gonna do.
1:57:16
Jûpe ♃
Yeah.
1:57:16
Jûpe ♃
Too bad our team didn't show up, but.
1:57:20
Jûpe ♃
I am feeling good about the team next year.
1:57:24
Vegoe
You should.
1:57:24
Jûpe ♃
I just.
1:57:26
Vegoe
You should feel really good.
1:57:27
Vegoe
They got the.
1:57:27
Jûpe ♃
No, no, I do.
1:57:28
Jûpe ♃
I do.
1:57:29
Jûpe ♃
But it's not only about players, this is how they come together and how they play.
1:57:34
Jûpe ♃
I mean, we've looked at teams that have had superstars, haven't finished.
1:57:39
Jûpe ♃
Look at Penn State.
1:57:41
Jûpe ♃
This year, they brought in the superstar.
1:57:45
Jûpe ♃
God, whatever.
1:57:49
Jûpe ♃
Lost in the first round.
1:57:51
Vegoe
Wyatt Cullen, he's gonna have his dad right next door.
1:57:56
Jûpe ♃
Who's the superstar?
1:57:56
Jûpe ♃
Is it gonna be Cullen?
1:57:58
Jûpe ♃
Or is it gonna be Kwasnika?
1:58:01
Vegoe
Well, who's the only number one pick on the roster next year?
1:58:06
Jûpe ♃
I don't even know.
1:58:07
Vegoe
Wyatt Cullen's gonna be the only number one pick on the roster.
1:58:09
Jûpe ♃
You think he's gonna, you think he's improved this?
1:58:12
Vegoe
I think he could go like ten.
1:58:16
Vegoe
It's not like a great, great draft.
1:58:18
Vegoe
And he's been such a late bloomer with his growth that I think a team's gonna take a shot on him.
1:58:24
Jûpe ♃
Let's f'n go.
1:58:26
Vegoe
He's gonna be the only number one pick.
1:58:28
Vegoe
And then you have, you know, guys come in like NER, who want to prove himself and get a pro contract.
1:58:34
Vegoe
And he's gonna be able to run power play.
1:58:37
Jûpe ♃
So, yeah, yeah.
1:58:39
Vegoe
And the power play is gonna be great next year.
1:58:41
Vegoe
What my biggest question is, penalty kill.
1:58:44
Vegoe
Luca is gonna have to be their best penalty killer.
1:58:46
Vegoe
And you're gonna lose Steve Miller, who by the way...
1:58:49
Jûpe ♃
Okay, hold on though.
1:58:50
Jûpe ♃
Okay, yeah.
1:58:52
Jûpe ♃
The decor is completely changing.
1:58:57
Jûpe ♃
I'm guessing Evan Murr is...
1:59:00
Jûpe ♃
He's seen it all.
1:59:02
Jûpe ♃
That really helps.
1:59:02
Jûpe ♃
Yes, he can run the power play, but you know what?
1:59:05
Jûpe ♃
I'm guessing he's gonna be pretty good on penalty kill as well.
1:59:09
Jûpe ♃
I mean, hasn't he been like the two-time player, the defensive player of the year in the CCAHA?
1:59:15
Jûpe ♃
And a lot of people saying, oh, Gopher's stolen.
1:59:21
Jûpe ♃
I actually have heard that it's actually more of his agent advisor saying, you need to get out of there and get to someplace bigger.
1:59:30
Jûpe ♃
So he kind of landed for Minnesota, didn't he?
1:59:33
Vegoe
Well, I talked about it earlier.
1:59:35
Vegoe
You know, he was only getting ATO offers.
1:59:38
Vegoe
And that means that you're not getting paid.
1:59:40
Vegoe
You're not guaranteed a spot on the roster next year.
1:59:43
Vegoe
A team is just getting a look at you.
1:59:45
Vegoe
You know, you look at some of the players who did sign, who got the PTOs or got contracts that start next year guaranteed.
1:59:54
Vegoe
That's that's a guaranteed spot.
1:59:56
Jûpe ♃
I mean, Luke Milstat has a spot on the roster next year for the Montreal AHL team.
2:00:04
Jûpe ♃
That's great.
2:00:05
Vegoe
You know, given the PK last year or two, I'm not sure Miller has a loss.
2:00:14
Vegoe
How funny is that we've swapped coaches, Leyland and Miller.
2:00:19
Jûpe ♃
Hey, everyone needs a fresh start.
2:00:21
Jûpe ♃
And every every coach has an expiration date is usually what the saying is.
2:00:26
Vegoe
You know, eventually, you know, Miller missed his chance to be a head coach.
2:00:32
Jûpe ♃
I don't think he wants to be head coach.
2:00:34
Jûpe ♃
True.
2:00:35
Jûpe ♃
Just, yes, there's something around him.
2:00:37
Jûpe ♃
Just being around him.
2:00:38
Jûpe ♃
I don't think that's his thing.
2:00:40
Jûpe ♃
He doesn't want to be the guy who's the head coach.
2:00:43
Jûpe ♃
It just doesn't seem like that.
2:00:44
Jûpe ♃
It'd have to be the perfect fit for him.
2:00:47
Jûpe ♃
He likes being the assistant.
2:00:49
Jûpe ♃
He likes the grind of it.
2:00:50
Vegoe
I loved his positivity though.
2:00:53
Vegoe
I loved his enthusiasm.
2:00:59
Vegoe
I think was on the bench as they swept Wisconsin this season.
2:01:06
Vegoe
And as he's going off, you know, with the players, he kind of waits, he kind of waits.
2:01:10
Vegoe
The players go, and then he goes out, he goes, yeah!
2:01:14
Vegoe
And the fans, he's given the high fives.
2:01:16
Vegoe
I love Miller's enthusiasm.
2:01:19
Vegoe
I didn't love his pedicure all these years.
2:01:23
Jûpe ♃
Well, I mean, part of that starts with the players that you have, you know, they struggle in the faceoff circle on the PK.
2:01:29
Jûpe ♃
They made a lot of bad mistakes on the PK.
2:01:32
Jûpe ♃
They had failed clears, like, opportunities, and the rotations at top are so...
2:01:42
Jûpe ♃
inconsistent.
2:01:44
Jûpe ♃
And I think when you're struggling and you've got players who don't have a lot of experience there, you know, the reads have to be on the PK.
2:01:53
Jûpe ♃
And we talked about that with Ramsey.
2:01:55
Jûpe ♃
You know, he and Ramonko played so much penalty kill together, they always knew what the other player was doing.
2:02:01
Jûpe ♃
And they didn't ever have a missed read, really.
2:02:04
Jûpe ♃
You know, we talked about that all the time.
2:02:07
Jûpe ♃
It's like, okay, missed read, missed read.
2:02:09
Jûpe ♃
We even broke it down on one of our podcasts this year.
2:02:13
Vegoe
And you know what?
2:02:14
Vegoe
You know, you look at something like a Ramsey and Ramonko, they're not superstars, but they knew their roles, and they played it perfectly.
2:02:24
Vegoe
And accepted those roles.
2:02:31
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, like I think we talked about with Brody Lamb, and he owned up to it immediately.
2:02:35
Jûpe ♃
He's just like, yeah, we are not reading it right up top, and we can't have that happen against the teams we're playing.
2:02:43
Jûpe ♃
It's like, and I had kind of suggested, like, maybe take Brody Lamb off of PK, you know, let him just focus on the power play.
2:02:51
Jûpe ♃
And I thought John Middlestad was a player that maybe you should just put him on PK because he'll buy in and he'll do what you need him to do.
2:02:59
Vegoe
I would agree.
2:03:01
Jûpe ♃
And sometimes coaches are nervous to make changes.
2:03:09
Vegoe
Well, you kind of proved that when, when Sammy Walker was, position was changed and they played very well at North Dakota.
2:03:21
Vegoe
And then why isn't he here?
2:03:25
Vegoe
Then the next thing you know, he's trying to hit you with golf balls.
2:03:29
Vegoe
Yeah.
2:03:30
Jûpe ♃
Well, you know, some things get lost in translation.
2:03:33
Jûpe ♃
So I was just looking out for Sammy's best interest.
2:03:37
Jûpe ♃
He skates like no other college player could at the time.
2:03:41
Jûpe ♃
And that was his strength.
2:03:43
Jûpe ♃
And I was like, just let Sammy be free.
2:03:46
Jûpe ♃
Put him on the wing.
2:03:47
Jûpe ♃
Let him, let him, let him beat Dee and scare them.
2:03:51
Jûpe ♃
I like that was the thing when he was playing wing.
2:03:53
Jûpe ♃
Dee, we're nervous to get beat because no one likes having a player just expose you with speed.
2:04:01
Jûpe ♃
You know, that's it.
2:04:02
Jûpe ♃
That's why you get these weird gaps sometimes on the rush.
2:04:06
Vegoe
Back, back, back, 191.
2:04:08
Vegoe
Has it been confirmed that Smith actually seriously injured?
2:04:12
Vegoe
I don't know what Smith's injury is.
2:04:13
Vegoe
Would you know what it is?
2:04:15
Jûpe ♃
I don't think WHL reporting on stuff like this is very transparent.
2:04:19
Vegoe
And that's fine.
2:04:20
Jûpe ♃
I think they keep everything pretty close to the vest.
2:04:22
Jûpe ♃
It's just that's what we're hearing is it's a significant injury that's keeping him out.
2:04:27
Vegoe
Vegas up to nothing at the after two.
2:04:30
Vegoe
So let's look in the Come on Logan Cooley, do your part.
2:04:34
Vegoe
I know it's looking like The Wild is going to play Sunday, which is fine.
2:04:37
Vegoe
But you know, and maybe The Wild, you know, they do get, you know, today off, tomorrow off.
2:04:44
Vegoe
God, that's a, that's a late, I think that's BS.
2:04:50
Vegoe
I mean, you find out midnight, maybe, another 45 minutes on a Friday that you're going to be playing on Sunday.
2:05:01
Vegoe
That's bullshit.
2:05:03
Jûpe ♃
I mean, they know they're playing there one day or the other.
2:05:06
Jûpe ♃
I don't think it's that still.
2:05:10
Jûpe ♃
I mean, we won't know the Big Ten schedule until September.
2:05:15
Jûpe ♃
So the same deal, right?
2:05:19
Vegoe
You know what?
2:05:20
Vegoe
That's bullshit too.
2:05:21
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, I know.
2:05:22
Vegoe
Because they know the schedule.
2:05:24
Vegoe
They know the weekends.
2:05:27
Vegoe
Just share it.
2:05:32
Vegoe
We know.
2:05:33
Vegoe
I loved your...
2:05:34
Vegoe
Well, you've been right on.
2:05:36
Vegoe
It's so many tweets lately.
2:05:37
Vegoe
I mean, I was just thinking earlier.
2:05:39
Vegoe
No, well, you know, I was just thinking earlier.
2:05:41
Vegoe
You know, you talked about how you pointed out how Minnesota had beaten all the frozen four teams and were undefeated against the national champion.
2:06:04
Vegoe
You're right on, Viggs, you're always on.
2:06:05
Vegoe
Sorry.
2:06:07
Jûpe ♃
Thank you.
2:06:08
Jûpe ♃
Thank you very much.
2:06:10
Jûpe ♃
Measure myself against others by height, except against Motay and Viking.
2:06:13
Vegoe
What are you, what are you, like, 6'3?
2:06:16
Jûpe ♃
Almost.
2:06:18
Vegoe
Except Motay.
2:06:21
Jûpe ♃
Except Motay and Viking.
2:06:23
Jûpe ♃
Those guys are large.
2:06:24
Vegoe
Viking's a big boy, too, yes.
2:06:28
Vegoe
He is.
2:06:31
Vegoe
Don't know the game.
2:06:34
Vegoe
We don't know anything.
2:06:35
Vegoe
The Wild, you know, they already got screwed on timing anyway.
2:06:42
Vegoe
Here you've got a number two and three seats starting at 830 p.m.
2:06:45
Vegoe
a couple of times.
2:06:45
Vegoe
I'm like, come on, what are you doing?
2:06:48
Vegoe
And they'll do the same thing.
2:06:50
Vegoe
They'll do the same thing.
2:06:51
Jûpe ♃
They'll be their pros.
2:06:53
Jûpe ♃
They'll be fine.
2:06:55
Jûpe ♃
I just love the attitude right now of all the wild players, like not getting rattled with anything.
2:07:02
Jûpe ♃
Seems like Marcus Flano is the only one who sometimes takes the the cheese.
2:07:09
Jûpe ♃
But otherwise, everyone else is pretty.
2:07:12
Jûpe ♃
Pretty even, which I love.
2:07:15
Vegoe
As a fan, though, how satisfying was it that Mr.
2:07:18
Vegoe
Ben gave up the puck to get the goal, the first empty net goal last night?
2:07:25
Vegoe
Very, very satisfying because he had offensively, he really didn't contribute a lot or at all for them, but he was still in the thorn in Minnesota side.
2:07:43
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, very satisfying.
2:07:46
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, it was, it was great.
2:07:48
Jûpe ♃
And I also liked seeing who was it that dove ranting and put himself in concussion protocol with his own dive.
2:08:02
Jûpe ♃
I mean, that's just that that writes itself right there.
2:08:05
Jûpe ♃
I mean, you couldn't couldn't put that in a movie and make it more real.
2:08:12
Jûpe ♃
But great series.
2:08:14
Jûpe ♃
Looking forward to more of it.
2:08:15
Jûpe ♃
I think Minnesota fans deserve a good run here.
2:08:22
Vegoe
Yes.
2:08:23
Jûpe ♃
Should we wrap it?
2:08:24
Vegoe
I think we should, because I'm getting way too drunk.
2:08:29
Vegoe
Shocking.
2:08:31
Jûpe ♃
Shocking.
2:08:32
Jûpe ♃
Don't want to make any mistakes tonight.
2:08:33
Jûpe ♃
So this is the final, final episode of the season.
2:08:37
Jûpe ♃
So appreciate everyone who has been on board with us this year.
2:08:42
Jûpe ♃
It has been a therapy session many nights for everyone.
2:08:45
Vegoe
I love that is the perfect word.
2:08:48
Vegoe
Therapy session.
2:08:51
Vegoe
Yep.
2:08:53
Vegoe
What else can you say?
2:08:55
Vegoe
It's still a fun season, though.
2:08:57
Vegoe
We still love being here for the therapy sessions.
2:09:01
Vegoe
I think more people watch when there's therapy sessions.
2:09:05
Vegoe
They're like, what the hell's going on type of thing?
2:09:08
Jûpe ♃
I don't know.
2:09:09
Jûpe ♃
Our numbers are pretty good after big wins and stuff.
2:09:12
Vegoe
At least our page views are like that.
2:09:17
Vegoe
Actually, the episode of The Coaching Change was more viewed than the Larson episode.
2:09:26
Jûpe ♃
Which is interesting.
2:09:28
Vegoe
People care.
2:09:29
Vegoe
People care.
2:09:31
Jûpe ♃
Well, that's what Bob said.
2:09:32
Jûpe ♃
You know, the same people that go to Tampa are the ones that are going to be on social media criticizing you.
2:09:37
Jûpe ♃
It comes with the territory.
2:09:39
Vegoe
Yep.
2:09:39
Jûpe ♃
And I think Bob did the right thing and left the program in a good spot.
2:09:42
Jûpe ♃
Like, they are going to be really good next year.
2:09:46
Jûpe ♃
Like, and this was the plan that he had going in the offseason.
2:09:49
Vegoe
Well, no, no, no.
2:09:50
Vegoe
Well, hold on.
2:09:51
Vegoe
Hold on.
2:09:54
Vegoe
He would have had the six players would not have entered the portal.
2:09:59
Vegoe
So that's do you think players would have gone into the portal?
2:10:03
Vegoe
Yes.
2:10:03
Vegoe
Moscow was still you think?
2:10:05
Vegoe
Yes.
2:10:06
Vegoe
Really?
2:10:07
Jûpe ♃
The word I was hearing at the end of the season was they were going to.
2:10:11
Vegoe
Bob wanted to clean house.
2:10:13
Jûpe ♃
I mean, not clean, clean house, but that's a pretty clean house.
2:10:17
Jûpe ♃
He knew changes had to be made because they can't have seasons like this.
2:10:24
Jûpe ♃
Like he knew he knew they were in a bad spot.
2:10:27
Jûpe ♃
And I think, you know, I inferred that he regretted some of the decisions he hadn't been making out of loyalty to players the last couple of years that cost them wins.
2:10:41
Jûpe ♃
And he understood, like, you can't do that.
2:10:43
Jûpe ♃
And I think it was easier for a new coach come in and clean house than for him to do it.
2:10:51
Jûpe ♃
But I think he knew it needed to happen.
2:10:55
Jûpe ♃
Yeah, I honestly believe that.
2:10:57
Vegoe
Yeah.
2:11:04
Vegoe
I like Gruber, but I think that was a huge...
2:11:09
Vegoe
Oh, you can't even call it a mistake.
2:11:12
Vegoe
He came in with a pretty high pride degree.
2:11:14
Vegoe
He was looking great.
2:11:16
Jûpe ♃
It was a gamble.
2:11:16
Jûpe ♃
It was a risk.
2:11:19
Jûpe ♃
Especially after his freshman year.
2:11:21
Jûpe ♃
After his freshman year, and you saw what he did on the ice, you're like, I know you're a great earmaid.
2:11:28
Jûpe ♃
You say, Joe, where is it?
2:11:30
Vegoe
Where is it, man?
2:11:31
Jûpe ♃
And you knew, like I said, I think in our opening podcast of the year, it's like they have put a lot of eggs in the Leo Gruber basket.
2:11:38
Vegoe
You did say that.
2:11:40
Vegoe
Yep, yep.
2:11:41
Jûpe ♃
It's like if he doesn't work out, this is going to be a tough season because they didn't reload anywhere else on defense.
2:11:51
Jûpe ♃
You know, I like Rombach.
2:11:52
Jûpe ♃
I like Whipple, but they're not they're not Rinzell and Chesley.
2:11:57
Vegoe
Yeah.
2:11:57
Jûpe ♃
And they didn't have anybody like that on the roster.
2:12:00
Jûpe ♃
You know, they were thinking, Oh, Gruber is going to be that guy.
2:12:04
Jûpe ♃
And he was and he had a high ankle sprain.
2:12:07
Jûpe ♃
And my dad always likes to joke that I I recognize the high ankle sprain is a very difficult injury to come back from because I had one of my junior high school and it ruined my season.
2:12:19
Jûpe ♃
Um, for what I could do at least, but, you know, it just was, it just was a tough, tough roster to recover from.
2:12:29
Jûpe ♃
You can't just go to the waiver wire and you can't make a trade.
2:12:34
Vegoe
So ended up being the worst season in over 50 years.
2:12:38
Jûpe ♃
Yes, and I think on to the next piece, Brett talked about this when he was, um, you know, at St.
2:12:48
Jûpe ♃
Cloud and he had a losing season.
2:12:50
Jûpe ♃
He should have made more changes.
2:12:52
Jûpe ♃
They did.
2:12:53
Jûpe ♃
He knew going into that year that it was going to be tough year and he thought he could get through it.
2:12:58
Jûpe ♃
He knows now you can't do that.
2:13:00
Jûpe ♃
And I think Bob has the same realization.
2:13:03
Jûpe ♃
If you're a coach and you feel uneasy about your roster and you have resources to make the change, you should make the change.
2:13:10
Jûpe ♃
Not a lot of patients anymore.
2:13:11
Vegoe
So true.
2:13:14
Jûpe ♃
All right.
2:13:15
Vegoe
Well, we'll call it a night.
2:13:17
Vegoe
We'll call it a season.
2:13:18
Vegoe
Season 15.
2:13:21
Vegoe
I don't think anyone's been doing it longer than us.
2:13:23
Vegoe
People have done more shows than us.
2:13:26
Vegoe
But it's always a fun thing, even if the team sucks, Viggs.
2:13:33
Vegoe
We have fun here.
2:13:36
Vegoe
You would not believe how much we fake it, folks.
2:13:40
Vegoe
We're trying to be as honest as we can with our opinions.
2:13:45
Vegoe
My notes have like five bullet points for these shows.
2:13:50
Vegoe
We try to give it to you as best as we can, as honest as we can.
2:13:55
Vegoe
We obviously, I leave it to Viggs to be the expert.
2:13:59
Vegoe
I just kind of direct him where he wants to go each night or each episode.
2:14:04
Vegoe
We thank the sponsors, Cascade CBX, Cub Foods, Pulltab Sports and The Kinger.
2:14:14
Vegoe
We will be hopefully keeping that relationship going.
2:14:18
Vegoe
Viggs, any final thoughts on season 15 of The Gopher Puck Live Podcast?
2:14:24
Jûpe ♃
Next year will be better.
2:14:27
Vegoe
I like that.
2:14:29
Vegoe
Good night, everyone.
2:14:30
Vegoe
We may have a summer episode if something happens, who knows?
2:14:34
Vegoe
We'll play it by ear, but if not, we will see you next year on The Gopher Puck Live Podcast.
