Oh boy, Jup makin mistakes, I love it.
0:28
The center picked off by Woog.
0:45
Now, here's Jupiter and Vegoe.
0:52
Jûpe
Good evening and welcome to The GPL Podcast, episode number 297.
1:00
Jûpe
Good evening, Veegs.
1:02
Jûpe
How you doing tonight?
1:03
Vegoe
Good evening, doing well.
1:06
Vegoe
We're almost through the midway point of the season for the Gophers.
1:11
Jûpe
Before we get too far, something, that doesn't happen often, happened last week.
1:17
Vegoe
And I think this is a game the Gophers can win.
1:20
Vegoe
It's just one game.
1:21
Vegoe
They can just focus on one game.
1:25
Vegoe
3-2 win.
1:26
Jûpe
You got me all excited now.
1:27
Jûpe
I don't know.
1:29
Jûpe
I'm going to say.
1:32
Jûpe
Overtime win.
1:37
Jûpe
We did something right, Veegs.
1:38
Jûpe
We did something right.
1:40
Vegoe
Yeah, I mean, I picked a win, and then you picked overtime win.
1:43
Vegoe
I mean, 100% right on your part.
1:45
Vegoe
You didn't throw out a score, so I'm not going to get a point there.
1:51
Vegoe
But see, I had one parent come up to me and say, hey, show a little confidence for this team after the Penn State Series and they came through against Denver.
2:00
Jûpe
They did.
2:02
Jûpe
Well, we've got a brand new guest tonight, don't we, Veegs?
2:05
Jûpe
Someone we've never had on before.
2:07
Vegoe
Yeah, brand new guest.
2:09
Vegoe
I don't know if people who have been following the podcast know how much of a fan we have in this guy.
2:15
Vegoe
He gives us a lot of feedback on how we're doing and we appreciate it all.
2:20
Vegoe
Sometimes we get updates from the club room.
2:24
Jûpe
And well, let's bring him in.
2:25
Jûpe
Dan Woog, obviously son of former coach Doug Woog and a Gopher himself.
2:31
Jûpe
Dan, how are you doing, man?
2:33
Dan
I'm great.
2:34
Dan
I reached out after listening to that last podcast.
2:36
Dan
I listened to you guys religiously week after week, especially when I'm cutting the grass or driving home from work.
2:41
Dan
Catch that one.
2:42
Dan
And I'm asking about the Powerball winners from you.
2:44
Dan
So just throw it out there.
2:46
Dan
But don't let anybody else.
2:47
Jûpe
Yeah.
2:49
Jûpe
Veegs, we don't get it right out of it, obviously.
2:51
Jûpe
I'm gonna flaunt it a little bit when we get the picks right.
2:54
Jûpe
And it was only one game, too.
2:55
Jûpe
At least it wasn't a series.
2:57
Vegoe
So much easier when it's just one game, right?
2:59
Jûpe
It is.
3:00
Jûpe
It totally is.
3:02
Jûpe
Well, Veegs, it was a good Saturday night for the Gophers.
3:08
Jûpe
Obviously, they started real well, even though that first period was terrible for them.
3:16
Jûpe
They got the lead and they didn't break too much in that first period, even though that was, what, 25 to 5 in shots.
3:22
Vegoe
Yeah.
3:23
Vegoe
And I think we've talked about this over the year.
3:25
Vegoe
This team needed to have moments like that and not let it impact their game, where all of a sudden, they're chasing plays, they're giving away offense to the other team.
3:34
Vegoe
You know, you need just to bear down.
3:36
Vegoe
And eventually, you know, things can go your way.
3:39
Vegoe
You can string a couple shifts together.
3:41
Vegoe
Tanner Ludgey talked about this.
3:43
Vegoe
He's like, it's not going to be one play that gets us back in this game.
3:45
Vegoe
It's going to take a couple and we just got to stick to it.
3:49
Vegoe
I think we saw that from the Gophers at Ball Arena.
3:52
Vegoe
You know, they got out shot 23-5, I think.
3:54
Vegoe
You know, a lot of that's because of the power play time that DU got.
3:59
Vegoe
But really, just a nice period from Luca Di Pasquale and just a good defensive effort to weather the storm.
4:06
Jûpe
And Dan, that's the key there.
4:08
Jûpe
They weathered the storm, yes.
4:10
Jûpe
They couldn't quite get out of the period with the lead, but that shot advantage was totally erased in the second period.
4:17
Jûpe
It was pretty much even for the rest of the game.
4:20
Dan
Yeah, and that's generally when you're on the road, you're trying to weather the storm originally.
4:24
Dan
The full energy excitement for the home team, the Friday night start, they're trying to feed off the crowd.
4:30
Dan
I know this was a different arena, it wasn't DU Arena, but yeah, sometimes you have to weather that.
4:37
Dan
Again, as you guys all talk about, this league is very, very competitive.
4:41
Dan
Anybody can win any given night, and if you get hot goaltending, which they had, it could have been a different game otherwise.
4:50
Jûpe
It was quite the Luke of performance, Figs, especially in that first period.
4:54
Jûpe
It could have been 4-1, 5-1.
4:57
Jûpe
The rest of the night, you could tell they were trying to change their strategy by putting a lot more traffic in front of the net to make it difficult for Luca.
5:05
Vegoe
Yeah.
5:05
Vegoe
I mean, it was a point of emphasis for both teams, I think, is to get traffic to the net.
5:09
Vegoe
You get through that first period and really need some greasy goals to get going.
5:16
Vegoe
I think we saw both teams get to that part of their game.
5:19
Vegoe
I think the other part that was good for Minnesota long-term, you know, they lost Leo Gruba in the first period and they'll be missing him for the Ohio State Series here coming up.
5:30
Vegoe
Losing him is a big impact for the Gopher defense.
5:33
Vegoe
It allowed Jake and Rombach a little bit more opportunity, John Whipple a little bit more of an opportunity to play and I think those players delivered a good game.
5:43
Jûpe
Now, I...
5:44
Dan
I was just going to mention, what they were getting, Pritchard's goal, little puck block finally, right?
5:49
Dan
The exact, more shoots it from the bad angle, shoots it on purpose, low towards the middle right side of the net, pops out right on Pritchard's stick, right?
5:59
Dan
And you have a little puck block like that is huge.
6:01
Dan
And I was going to mention that too, Veegs says, some of my, you see all the time, whether it's with the wild, it's that net front presence, right?
6:10
Dan
And the guys that are willing to stand there, take the abuse, you know, Hendrickson is not afraid.
6:14
Dan
Jimmy Clark is smart.
6:15
Dan
He knows that's a good spot to go.
6:17
Dan
Lamb does that.
6:18
Dan
Eric Sinek does it constantly with the wildman.
6:21
Dan
It creates a problem for the goalie's vision, right?
6:23
Dan
And then they're trying to figure out how to move, where to move.
6:25
Dan
And whether it's across ice from, you know, Zuccarella to Krill or Mooney to Lamb, whoever it is.
6:33
Dan
I mean, it causes problems with that guy in front of the net.
6:36
Dan
You almost wish there was a stat for that.
6:37
Dan
Every time you score on somebody in front of the net, and maybe there is that I'm not aware of.
6:44
Jûpe
Well, Veegs, they were only 50% on the kill.
6:51
Jûpe
They gave up one goal.
6:52
Jûpe
But you know what?
6:53
Jûpe
There was only two power plays.
6:56
Vegoe
Luckily for them.
6:57
Jûpe
Yeah, luckily for them, there was only two power plays.
6:59
Jûpe
But it's hard to improve your numbers if you're not in the box as well.
7:06
Jûpe
But you have some videos here that I want to bring up and play that the two, just a little segment of each power player.
7:14
Jûpe
Can you kind of describe what we've got going on here?
7:18
Vegoe
Well, I think what's really been impacting the GopherPellanee kill this year is the plays at the top of the zone.
7:24
Vegoe
And where Gophers are getting trouble is they'll start sliding across and you'll have two players try to do the same job.
7:30
Vegoe
As you look, two players there try to stop the shot at the top of the point, leaving a flank wide open.
7:37
Vegoe
And this is something that's been happening over again a lot.
7:40
Vegoe
Here we see Ludky.
7:41
Vegoe
He's the player in position to come block the shot.
7:44
Vegoe
Lamb needs to fall back here and take away some of the shooting lanes from the flank and get to the net.
7:51
Vegoe
And you see here, they both go to the middle, flanks wide open.
7:54
Vegoe
Very difficult save for a goaltender.
7:56
Vegoe
They get lucky here.
7:57
Vegoe
The player misses the wide open net, but that's been something that's been happening in the GopherPellanee kill quite a bit.
8:03
Vegoe
Miscommunications at the top.
8:06
Vegoe
You know, in your traditional Pellanee kill, you've got your box, you've got your diamond, and you've got your triangle plus one.
8:12
Vegoe
And figuring out when you go to that triangle plus one, who is staying with the shooter, and who's falling back to the net, who's covering the flanks with the shot blocking, you know, that's the communication that has to happen.
8:24
Dan
And part of it gets complicated a little bit, and which is a good thing to do when you're on the offensive side and the power play is to keep that movement, you know, rotation of their, it might be a 2-2-1 or whatever, a 1-3-1, whatever they're doing on the power play.
8:40
Dan
But then, you know, you see it, they're always trying to move a little bit to create that shooting lane too.
8:44
Dan
And guys just snap it, if they can get through the net, it's again, net front presence, that causes a problem, but it's the rotation too.
8:52
Dan
And like you said, Biggs, all of a sudden that shooting lane is wide open, right?
8:56
Dan
There's nobody able to center up on that shot when we're not adjusting properly.
9:02
Jûpe
And in the second video, Biggs, it cost them.
9:06
Vegoe
Yeah, you know, Devers Power Play has been deadly all year.
9:09
Vegoe
We see kind of a similar situation where we have two players here getting out of position, both going to the shot, leaving that wide open lane across and nobody there to block the shot.
9:19
Vegoe
You know, that's been something we asked the players, you know, what needs to change?
9:23
Vegoe
You know, you got to get sticks in lanes to stop the pass or you've got to take away the shooting lane and take away those shots.
9:29
Vegoe
Because it's a lot to ask a goaltender to be moving all the way across, back and forth on these without help from his teammates.
9:35
Vegoe
Because he's looking through traffic here, trying to face this shooter.
9:39
Vegoe
You know, it's hard for him to cover this shooter and the one on the backside, especially as he dies behind.
9:43
Vegoe
And we've got two guys going to the shooter right there.
9:46
Jûpe
Yeah, so you can say they went the pass came across and you could see it clearly that they just both turned that way.
9:52
Vegoe
And fortunately, again, this is Paulson and Lamb, you know, two players.
9:55
Vegoe
We've been talking about having some issues here on the PK.
9:59
Vegoe
You know, it's one part of this team that's really got to change.
10:02
Vegoe
We've been asking Bob about this the last couple of weeks.
10:06
Vegoe
You know, what the change is here and he's like, you know, one game it's really good for us and then the next it's bad again.
10:13
Vegoe
It's just too inconsistent.
10:15
Vegoe
And, you know, he said, we're just going to sprint here to the midway point.
10:19
Vegoe
And when we get back to the second half, there might be some personnel changes out there.
10:24
Dan
And sometimes part of the strategy in Pelony Killers is if you're having problems, you're trying to force them to go one one direction a little bit.
10:31
Dan
They go from the top and then it starts going to sidewards.
10:34
Dan
That top guy can come in a little bit of a loop.
10:38
Dan
So trying to avoid that path back to the middle of the ice danger area.
10:41
Dan
Again, there's a lot of rotation that has to go on.
10:43
Dan
And again, you know, I think it's going to get better.
10:46
Dan
I know it's going to get better.
10:47
Dan
You know, I think Steve Miller is as good or smarter probably than all of us.
10:52
Dan
So it'll get better and these guys are going to grow.
10:55
Vegoe
I do think Brody Lamb had a great weekend.
10:57
Vegoe
Offensively, five on five on the power play.
11:00
Vegoe
Like he has attributes to his game where he's really making a positive contribution.
11:05
Vegoe
It's just been on this PK.
11:07
Vegoe
You know, maybe it's just not his feel.
11:09
Vegoe
And maybe it can be simplifying for him in the second half of the season.
11:13
Vegoe
If they, you know, distribute this ice time to somebody else who can totally focus on their five on five play and their penalty kill and allow Brody Lamb to focus on power play and five on five.
11:23
Vegoe
Because I think we've seen the last couple of games, Lamb has been a lot more consistent about driving the net.
11:29
Vegoe
Sometimes being that sacrifice on rush chances, pushing the D back into the crease, creating space for passes and then being there for chaos on rebounds.
11:39
Vegoe
You know, I think that's really the strength of his game.
11:42
Jûpe
Well, we're going to take a look at some of the goals here in a second.
11:44
Jûpe
But for those of you listening to the podcast, we highly recommend, go to our YouTube channel.
11:49
Jûpe
You could watch us and then you could see these videos and these demonstrations we're doing.
11:55
Jûpe
We've been trying to expand more into the video.
11:57
Jûpe
Obviously, we've been videoing for a while.
11:58
Jûpe
But now, it's not just listening.
12:01
Jûpe
You got to watch some of the stuff, right?
12:04
Vegoe
Right.
12:04
Vegoe
I'm not quite the play-by-play guy, Wally Shaver.
12:07
Vegoe
So I'm doing the best I can here in my video breakdowns for everyone.
12:12
Dan
But aren't you doing this video for the junior or sports and stuff you're coaching?
12:17
Vegoe
Yeah, a little bit.
12:20
Jûpe
Well, we'll kind of walk us through here.
12:21
Jûpe
Here's that first goal, Veegs.
12:24
Jûpe
Obviously, just not a great place for the goalie to put the puck there.
12:28
Vegoe
Not a great place, but good place for Tate Richard to drive the far post.
12:33
Vegoe
You always talk about that on the rush.
12:34
Vegoe
You want a player driving the far post.
12:37
Vegoe
Pritchard's there.
12:37
Vegoe
He's ready for it, too.
12:39
Vegoe
His stick's down, so he's ready to bounce the rebound and a great goal for the Gophers.
12:43
Dan
Another advantage to driving that far post and get into the net, whether it's the center drive or the wing, is you got it.
12:49
Dan
If you need to chip it down low to keep the play going, you've got guys going forward.
12:53
Dan
The other guys are on their heels on the defensive side.
12:57
Jûpe
Yeah, it was that worked out pretty well for him there.
13:01
Jûpe
And then we've got what is it?
13:02
Jûpe
What's the second goal here?
13:04
Jûpe
It's going to come up here.
13:06
Jûpe
Oh, is this the one where a lamb holds on to it?
13:09
Jûpe
Like you're talking about, V, they went to the net.
13:11
Jûpe
Look, there's the chance right there for you.
13:13
Vegoe
Yep, Jimmy Clark's driving the net on this goal.
13:15
Vegoe
You know, great play by him.
13:17
Vegoe
He's been a player who sacrificed himself.
13:20
Vegoe
Beckett's hold on, Pucks a little bit more.
13:22
Vegoe
And you talk about teammates, you know, they're making plays that way.
13:26
Jûpe
And this is where, you know, Denver probably made a mistake.
13:28
Jûpe
It's three on three.
13:30
Jûpe
And they just left him alone at the top, you know, the players going in, two guys took out three guys.
13:38
Dan
Yep.
13:38
Dan
They didn't adjust over to Jimmy Clark because Jimmy Clark went towards the defense first.
13:42
Dan
So we kind of had to honor them a little bit.
13:44
Dan
And then Jimmy went to the other D and went to the net there.
13:48
Jûpe
And I believe this is Zeemer's goal with a nice drop by Lamb there.
13:53
Jûpe
Veegs, we've seen somebody drop passes that go so well in a lot of years here.
13:59
Jûpe
That's what had actually worked out pretty well.
14:02
Vegoe
Yeah.
14:02
Vegoe
Sometimes you have those fancy pants players so they can pull out the fancy pants plays.
14:08
Vegoe
One thing about this power play is the rush up the ice wasn't smooth.
14:13
Vegoe
You know, usually you see that second guy on the drop pass as they come up in the neutral zone has kind of a clean entry.
14:19
Vegoe
Denver does a really good job here of putting pressure at the red line and through the blue line.
14:24
Vegoe
And it's a complicated play to gain the zone with possession.
14:28
Vegoe
So I think kudos to the Gopher power play, which has really picked it up the last couple of weeks.
14:33
Vegoe
I think the last seven games, I heard Wally say they're clicking about 30 plus percent, which is pretty good for power playing College Hockey.
14:41
Jûpe
They're like, they're in the twenties, like 23rd or something like that.
14:43
Jûpe
So they've, they've gone up pretty quickly here.
14:45
Dan
They come in the rush just like they do in zone set up, right?
14:49
Jûpe
They do.
14:50
Jûpe
They certainly do.
14:53
Jûpe
And then we know that Denver comes back in a strong third period, Veegs.
14:58
Jûpe
But Minnesota, what a play by Hendrickson behind the net there.
15:03
Vegoe
Just really good puck protection.
15:05
Vegoe
I think that's what you're looking for out of Beckett and Javon.
15:09
Vegoe
Two big forwards who can buy time for their teammates to find space.
15:14
Vegoe
And really nice job by Jimmy Clark kind of disappearing up high here away from the front of the net.
15:19
Vegoe
Letting Brody Lamb get all that attention and then just reading the space to fall into.
15:24
Vegoe
And a great backhand pass by Beckett through the crease, just right on the money.
15:29
Dan
One of the angles you could see Beckett looking before he's starting to make that play.
15:33
Jûpe
He was.
15:34
Dan
To that weak side.
15:36
Vegoe
Yeah, you really want your power forward to scan the ice in those situations.
15:40
Vegoe
Yeah, the more pictures they can take of the zone, the better.
15:44
Jûpe
And then, you know, we've got another power play goal here, Veegs.
15:49
Jûpe
Gophers were two for two that night.
15:50
Jûpe
That assist right there by Brody Ziemer.
15:53
Jûpe
I think that should have been the assist of the week.
15:55
Jûpe
They gave it to Beckett, you know, from the University of Minnesota, what they thought.
15:58
Jûpe
But oh, 74 here.
16:01
Jûpe
Wow.
16:03
Vegoe
Yeah, Brody Ziemer can be a special player.
16:05
Vegoe
You know, he's got some vision, some skills, some grit, some battle.
16:09
Vegoe
This one's a little bit of luck as well.
16:12
Vegoe
As he slips it right through the Denver defense.
16:15
Vegoe
You know, I think this is going between the legs on the pass and just finds LJ in the right spot again, a player ready to make his own luck.
16:25
Dan
And he knew, I mean, he knew LJ was going to be on that side.
16:28
Dan
So it wasn't just a giveaway pass, right?
16:31
Dan
He knew it just happened to make it through this time.
16:34
Jûpe
So they didn't quite weather the Storm of Eag's.
16:37
Jûpe
Denver comes back, gets a goal with like 23 seconds left, tie it up, are dominating overtime until Mr.
16:45
Jûpe
Moore here by himself, the only shot of the overtime gets the winner.
16:51
Speaker 6
Drop pass, nice move there by Moore.
16:53
Speaker 4
Shot, score, and he wins it.
16:56
Speaker 6
Javon Moore.
16:59
Speaker 4
Gophers winning in overtime.
17:01
Speaker 6
A play by the freshman, Javon Moore.
17:05
Speaker 6
He makes a little dipsy-doo at the blue line, comes in, and he's able to beat Miller to the short side.
17:13
Jûpe
So, Veegs, number one, there were a lot of Gopher fans there.
17:16
Jûpe
That was a nice pop in overtime, wasn't it?
17:19
Vegoe
Yeah, good travel by the Gophers on Black Friday weekend, and get out to Denver and celebrate with the team.
17:26
Vegoe
I talked to Javon this week about that goal.
17:30
Vegoe
He's very excited, and he feels very good about himself going to the second half.
17:34
Vegoe
I think if Minnesota is going to go places the fans want them to go, Javon's got to be a part of that.
17:39
Vegoe
He's had a little bit of a slow start this year, but he says he's trying to hold on to pucks a little bit more, make better plays, and use his shot.
17:48
Vegoe
We talked to Jack Ramsey about Javon earlier in the year, and he said, this guy can shoot the puck, and he just has to find the right times to do that.
17:57
Vegoe
Javon had an earlier rush in the OT where his shot got blocked.
18:01
Vegoe
This one he made a nice move, found some space, was able to execute.
18:05
Dan
Don't call me Oliver, right?
18:11
Jûpe
Well, Dan, we're having you on because it's going to be the sixth year since your father passing away.
18:20
Jûpe
Obviously, beloved among all Gopher fans and hockey fans.
18:27
Jûpe
So I'm glad you would come on this week.
18:28
Jûpe
I do believe the date is December 12th.
18:32
Dan
14th.
18:33
Jûpe
Sorry, my mistake.
18:34
Dan
I don't know if that was you or somebody else that said that the same day, like...
18:37
Jûpe
It is.
18:38
Jûpe
It is the same.
18:39
Dan
Like Tom Moore passed away or something.
18:40
Jûpe
Yeah, the exact same day, but Glenn passed away in 2015.
18:45
Jûpe
Okay.
18:46
Jûpe
Two Gopher coaches.
18:48
Jûpe
Obviously, a lot of us don't know much about Glenn as a Gopher coach that was before we were born or around that time.
18:57
Jûpe
But then, obviously as a North Star coach, that's where I first remember Glenn and then him on the radio.
19:02
Jûpe
And then your dad on TV and your dad everywhere else.
19:06
Jûpe
Vegs, it's just, what are the chances that two kind of icons died on the same day just years apart?
19:14
Jûpe
That's just, it's just strange.
19:16
Vegoe
Yeah.
19:16
Vegoe
And for me, you know, both of them probably shaped some of my youth.
19:21
Vegoe
You know, I would always listen to Gopher radio post games with my dad on the ride home.
19:27
Vegoe
We'd walk back to the ramp and we'd hustle to get back so we could listen to Glenn, you know, pick his three stars of the game all the time.
19:34
Vegoe
I remember going to a skating camp at St.
19:38
Vegoe
Louis Park Rec Center in Samoa would come in there and, you know, give all the kids a head rub and stuff and talk to him and stuff.
19:46
Vegoe
And he was quite the personality.
19:49
Vegoe
And same with Doug, you know, just growing up listening to his game calls on MSC and all that.
19:55
Vegoe
You know, remembering him on the bench when I was a little kid standing on the bench to watch Pat McClelland go on his breakways as he floated in the neutral zone.
20:04
Jûpe
Floated?
20:04
Jûpe
Oh, you're going to say that to his face when he's on the pod?
20:07
Vegoe
Oh, for sure.
20:09
Vegoe
For sure.
20:11
Vegoe
Yeah.
20:12
Vegoe
Well, two great people.
20:14
Dan
Well, thank you.
20:14
Dan
It's very nice of you.
20:16
Dan
And we appreciate that.
20:18
Dan
And it's, you know, those are things that take away some of the stings still, you know, all these great memories.
20:22
Dan
And you got a guy delivering a package to the house the other day.
20:25
Dan
And he's telling me about when he met my dad.
20:27
Dan
I mean, this is six years later, almost.
20:28
Dan
And he's like, he kind of put the name on the package.
20:31
Dan
He's like, oh, are you so and so?
20:33
Dan
And I said, yeah.
20:34
Dan
He goes, your dad, you know, I was at the Moments.
20:37
Dan
That's where the Senior Housing or Memory Care Unit was down in the south side of Buck Hill.
20:42
Dan
That's where he was.
20:43
Dan
And I mean, he had so many visitors.
20:44
Dan
It was unbelievable.
20:46
Dan
We're very thankful for all that.
20:48
Dan
But he said, yeah, your dad tapped me on the shoulder and said, hey, can you help me put my shoe back on?
20:56
Dan
I had no idea.
20:57
Dan
He goes, okay.
20:58
Dan
And he figures out who it was.
21:00
Dan
He tells me about the other day.
21:01
Dan
He goes, your dad was so nice to me, he said.
21:05
Dan
And it's just one time, one thing after another.
21:07
Dan
And again, I feel very lucky.
21:08
Dan
And that was kind of his personality.
21:11
Dan
I think it's very outgoing, very energetic is the right word.
21:17
Dan
But got fired up a few times and might have grabbed his tie once and did that for the referees once.
21:23
Dan
And down in Madison.
21:25
Jûpe
Oh, I remember that.
21:27
Jûpe
I remember that.
21:30
Jûpe
I have a story, you know, my friend Jen and I went up to Grand Forks when he would be calling TV.
21:37
Jûpe
And it was a gopher sweep that weekend, somewhere in the mid 2000s.
21:40
Jûpe
So it turned out well.
21:42
Jûpe
So we go to Sugar's.
21:44
Jûpe
That was one of the hotel bars.
21:47
Jûpe
Who comes in was your dad.
21:49
Jûpe
We got to get a picture with the Wooger.
21:51
Jûpe
And he knew us because we had seen him up at Suite 5 at after games a couple of times.
21:57
Jûpe
Very cheap.
21:59
Jûpe
And we got pictures with them.
22:01
Jûpe
This one right here.
22:02
Jûpe
Look at this.
22:03
Jûpe
Look at this fine picture.
22:03
Jûpe
I still had some grays.
22:06
Jûpe
But I always keep that one out here.
22:08
Jûpe
Because we've got podcasts.
22:10
Jûpe
I get the Wooger with me.
22:12
Jûpe
So he knew that we had a digital camera.
22:17
Jûpe
He runs into some old buddies at the bar.
22:21
Jûpe
And he comes back over to Jen and says, hey, can you take a picture of my friends and I?
22:25
Jûpe
So she gets him in a group, gets him all lined up, takes a picture.
22:30
Jûpe
And then she looks at, she goes, Wooger, you got three inches on these guys.
22:33
Jûpe
You know, referring to, he was actually taller than all of us, but you got three inches on these guys.
22:38
Jûpe
And he pokes his buddies, says, you know, she didn't say where.
22:43
Dan
Pretty witty.
22:46
Jûpe
And, you know, that's my Wooger story on the road.
22:50
Jûpe
I will, there are others, but we can't say all the others, so.
22:55
Dan
Yeah, you know, I think most of his players really enjoyed playing for him, honestly.
22:59
Dan
I think he had a good balance between, and I had that also in juniors with like a Mike Gensel and Tommy Ward, but, you know, they knew when it's time to get busy and focus, but there's also a lot of laughter, you know, a lot of fun.
23:12
Dan
You want to be at the rink.
23:13
Dan
You know, you don't want to be, you know, crapping about things.
23:16
Dan
And so it's, you know, we might have had a, of age guys might have had a beer on the bus on the way back from a sweep in Duluth, but, you know, he didn't have anything to do with it, but, you know, he was, I'm sure he probably knew about it, but we're of age.
23:29
Dan
So especially me, I was really of age throughout this process, but I appreciate it.
23:35
Dan
Thanks.
23:35
Dan
And it feels good to hear even more good stories.
23:38
Dan
I know, you know, we all miss him and I know his grandkids miss him and we've got, you know, seven granddaughters and one grandson.
23:46
Dan
So if you need somebody in crunch time, that was me.
23:49
Dan
The last grandkid was a boy, Jake, named after his dad.
23:52
Dan
So Jake and Wanda, his folks were at, you know, every game they could go to.
23:56
Dan
And they were even in East Lansing when we won the playoffs and they kept the Burger King open.
24:03
Dan
The light just closed off.
24:05
Dan
They were in there celebrating our trip to the Frozen Four that year, but they had them reopen it and they were dancing on tables and they were just having a great time in the 70s, 80 years old.
24:15
Jûpe
Well we will always keep the Woogisms page up on GPL with stories that people have told us that they've heard over the years, you know, quotes from when he was on the air and he said something on the air.
24:32
Dan
Probably not appropriate at least.
24:33
Jûpe
Well, you know, you know how it is, but people can always go to GPL and see these, you know, I actually love this photo right here.
24:42
Jûpe
I took that of him when he was doing one of those post-game on ice things a couple of years back, or actually it was with Gorg.
24:52
Jûpe
He made Gorg look really bad, look really bad as a goalie on the ice.
24:56
Dan
So I loved how they used to do that and they take that little pre-game stuff.
25:01
Dan
But then whether it's in between periods or post-game, you know, I think it's a chance for others that maybe aren't as exposed to the game as much to maybe learn some little parts of the game.
25:11
Dan
And hopefully that would help somebody else.
25:13
Dan
You know, I think that's always in his mind as a past educator and, you know, geography teacher.
25:19
Dan
And it was really education first and foremost and teaching.
25:23
Dan
And even when he got invited to coach for the North Stars by Pierre Paget, leaving the University of Minnesota, and he turned that down, you know, he's like, no, I like working with the amateurs.
25:34
Dan
And so a lot of giving back.
25:36
Dan
And we're continuing to do that as much as we can now.
25:39
Dan
A couple of scholarships.
25:40
Dan
And that was my that was my quick change.
25:42
Dan
That's my Gruba hat.
25:44
Jûpe
Yeah, I love the Gruba hat.
25:45
Dan
They all get better soon, right?
25:48
Dan
So, yeah, we've got scholarships for Luke Middlestad and Leo Gruba with our Woog Scholarship Fund and Dalman Fund.
25:58
Dan
So it's it feels good.
25:59
Dan
There are a lot of great young men out there and feels good to help them and see where they go.
26:05
Jûpe
One of the Woogisms that actually Frank Mazzocco talked about during his first retirement party down at Tom Reeds, was talking about the World Juniors.
26:16
Jûpe
And back in those days, I used to record all the games and digitize them and put out some highlights until I got in trouble from Fox.
26:27
Jûpe
But I did capture the audio that Frank loves to talk about.
26:30
Jûpe
And here it is.
26:32
Speaker 1
It's a lot better to fly from Vancouver than it's from Novosibirsk, I'll tell you.
26:39
Speaker 1
The Novosibirsk is just on the eastern part of the Urals, folks.
26:45
Jûpe
So obviously misspoke when he said Urals, but that's why we love the Wooger, right?
26:54
Vegoe
Hardly wonders, is that a little tongue in cheek or was it a misspeak?
26:58
Vegoe
You know, so that's just you never know what the Wooger, I never know.
27:02
Jûpe
Oh, and then I captured another one that's that happened.
27:06
Jûpe
We all remember the famous three game series in Mankato when they ended up three over time games.
27:14
Jûpe
But the Wooger did drop this during one of those games.
27:19
Speaker 1
Everybody in the building standing, some people in a wheelchair.
27:22
Jûpe
Everybody's up.
27:27
Vegoe
That's a great paints the scene.
27:29
Vegoe
Yeah, your page.
27:31
Dan
People should go there and read some of those stories behind there.
27:35
Dan
Oh, North Dakota one, when you're pulling up on the bus and they're throwing snowballs at your bus.
27:39
Dan
And he's saying he'd pay you for that sign, that gopher sign because it's misspelled.
27:45
Dan
You know, and send the guy 25 bucks, but it's like $3 really.
27:49
Dan
And the guy complains about it.
27:52
Jûpe
That story is in there.
27:53
Jûpe
That story is on the page.
27:54
Dan
It's more accurate in there than it is out of my mouth.
27:58
Jûpe
So right before the broadcast here, I saw Gopher Game Notes posted some stats on you, Dan.
28:05
Dan
That's been a short clip.
28:08
Jûpe
One of them is this.
28:11
Jûpe
You're one of six Gophers to score your first goal in overtime.
28:17
Jûpe
Jim Carter, Tom Benelli, Russ Anderson, Dean Williamson, Dan Woog and Jake Peranto are the only Gophers to ever score in overtime.
28:25
Jûpe
It was part of our opening clip was your goal in overtime.
28:31
Jûpe
I've got the full video here.
28:32
Jûpe
I'm going to play that, but not just you, but if some people watch towards the end when they're doing the rouser, you might recognize a current GPLer.
28:43
Jûpe
Let me see if you can figure out who it is.
28:46
Speaker 4
3-12 in the overtime.
28:49
Speaker 4
Rosick out to center, picked off by Woog.
28:52
Speaker 4
Relate ahead to Feeblecorn, centering it.
28:55
Speaker 6
Here was Shepard!
29:15
Speaker 4
By those South St.
29:16
Speaker 4
Paul boys, know how to put it in the net in overtime.
29:19
Speaker 4
Danny Woog, 3-2 Minnesota.
29:22
Speaker 7
Oh, what a goal was it.
29:24
Speaker 7
It was, it was a presence of his mind to fall down to that puck as we're gonna see it again, but watch some of the jubilation that takes place.
29:31
Speaker 7
As the Gophers have won in overtime, Frank, you just mentioned they had two big victories.
29:35
Speaker 7
Now they've made three.
29:36
Speaker 7
It's been the us and her heroes that have come through in the overtime.
29:40
Speaker 7
But Danny Woog's scoring perhaps what could be its most memorable goal of this career as he puts it in the top shelf.
29:47
Speaker 7
A big victory for the Gophers as they go on to win and get two important points in those WCHA standings.
29:54
Speaker 7
His first goal of the season.
29:58
Speaker 4
And career for the freshman.
30:02
Speaker 4
And you don't think Papa's happy?
30:05
Jûpe
So there's your career first goal, that overtime goal.
30:08
Jûpe
And if you guys didn't recognize that last kind of fan shot there, Sean Sullivan, Grey Eagle himself, many, many years ago with his wife there.
30:22
Jûpe
I think Sean's gonna, I think Grey Eagle's gonna be retiring here soon from, so.
30:28
Jûpe
But he's been a GPLer since everything began.
30:31
Jûpe
So it was, I saw that video.
30:33
Jûpe
I'm like, I couldn't believe how I spotted him.
30:35
Jûpe
Because it was definitely him and his wife.
30:38
Jûpe
So you had the first, you know, one of six Gophers to score your first goal as an overtime goal.
30:43
Jûpe
But then look at Gopher Game Nodes also puts out that most assists on other players' first Gopher goals.
30:52
Jûpe
You're tied for second with six assists on Gopher's first goals.
30:56
Jûpe
You assisted Dave Larson's first goal, Casey Hankinson, J Mosier, Eric Rasmussen, Mike Lyons, and Dave Spear.
31:07
Jûpe
It's hard to read it.
31:08
Jûpe
It's small.
31:09
Jûpe
Yes, I know, but...
31:12
Dan
I like all these goals against North Dakota.
31:15
Jûpe
We have three of them.
31:19
Jûpe
We thank Gopher Game Nodes.
31:20
Jûpe
He put this out right before our show started.
31:22
Jûpe
So I had to make sure to get this on here.
31:26
Jûpe
That's a lot.
31:27
Jûpe
I mean, Hank Rasmussen, Spear, Lart.
31:30
Jûpe
I mean, wow.
31:31
Dan
You think I was on the first line or something?
31:35
Jûpe
What, you weren't?
31:36
Dan
I'm sure I was a fourth shift up if we didn't get any power plays against us.
31:40
Dan
But no, I mean, these are all great guys.
31:42
Dan
And the first one on the list, Dave Larson there.
31:45
Dan
He's a great story because he's a South St.
31:47
Dan
Paul guy, just like I grew up, too.
31:49
Dan
We played youth hockey together.
31:52
Dan
But our dads played youth hockey together in South St.
31:55
Dan
Paul.
31:55
Dan
And then they ended up, you know, Dave and I, Larson, he had like three overtime winners or something in college.
32:01
Dan
I mean, he had the hot stick in overtime.
32:04
Dan
But he ended up, we played junior hockey together at St.
32:06
Dan
Paul Vulcans and then the U.
32:09
Dan
And our dads played at the U together also.
32:11
Dan
So it was kind of a pretty awesome opportunity that we, you know, all got to participate in and great family.
32:18
Dan
And, you know, it's kind of like you guys, everybody's got to have a nickname.
32:20
Dan
And his dad's a book, you know.
32:23
Dan
Mine's Boomer, you know, from the old days.
32:26
Dan
But it's a great, those are great, great memories.
32:29
Dan
And I love those clips.
32:30
Dan
Actually, I see those on YouTube.
32:32
Dan
You know, when I'm, if I was traveling for work and I'm in a hotel or something, I just pull up the YouTube and my dad's sister, Hetty, way back in the MSC days, especially, and then Fox, took those VCR tapes and she cut out all my shifts and put all this into one and then, I had all these discs.
32:53
Dan
I mean, the hours and hours and hours that she spent, it may sound egotistical, but it's still, it's probably one of the best gifts I've ever received.
33:00
Dan
And partly because I say, God, I wasn't very good, or that was a dumb play, or wow, that looked like I scored my 16th goal of the season.
33:07
Dan
No, that was number one, you know, but yeah, pretty, pretty awesome.
33:12
Dan
Great memories, very, very fortunate.
33:15
Dan
Again, I'm sure the goalie had no clue where I was going because I didn't either.
33:19
Vegoe
There's no book on you, right?
33:20
Speaker 6
No, no, no.
33:24
Jûpe
Marriott Schminner, he wants to bring back the Bumblebee jerseys.
33:26
Jûpe
Did you like those Bumblebees?
33:29
Dan
You know, I didn't really care.
33:30
Dan
I mean, some of the kids and guys get into that these days.
33:33
Dan
To me, I don't know, as long as it's got the M or the Minnesota name on it, that's all that meant to me or the Gopher sign.
33:38
Dan
And, you know, from the old ring, because I'm old enough that I played a game in the old Marriott Schminner with all the light coming in one side, right?
33:47
Dan
And then it's slanted yellow ceiling on the other.
33:50
Dan
And we'd skate on Sundays when we were little kids.
33:51
Dan
We'd get out there and have some open ice.
33:53
Dan
And that was when Dean Talifas was around and some old names that were on the original coaching staff.
33:58
Dan
And so many good ones have come through there with, you know, again, Mike Genslow is one of my all time favorites.
34:05
Dan
Super intense, but also a big kid.
34:08
Dan
You know, we have him for our Vulcans.
34:10
Dan
And sorry if I'm getting off track here, but we know you're great.
34:13
Dan
When Stan Hubbard, Channel 5 News owners, they own the St.
34:17
Dan
Paul Vulcans Junior Team and dad coached there in the early 70s, early to mid 70s.
34:21
Dan
So that's when we were born.
34:23
Dan
He was actually coaching there and he had a great story.
34:28
Dan
Some of his teammates told me about to our players told me about.
34:32
Dan
And so there was Frank Cerattori was one of his goalies and Mark Mazzellini.
34:37
Dan
And Mark Mazzellini, he's uptight about everything, probably what's on his dinner plate, whatever it is.
34:42
Dan
He's a great coach, great hockey mind.
34:45
Dan
You couldn't relax around him, but great hockey coach.
34:49
Dan
And so they're in the national tournament and they are stacked.
34:52
Dan
Rusty Welch's team, who's end up being my high school coach at South St.
34:57
Dan
Paul's from Hastings.
34:59
Dan
He's telling us about, yeah, your dad got wind in the third or late in the second period, they're up nine to nothing in a national tournament.
35:06
Dan
So they are just stomping on somebody.
35:09
Dan
And they listen, they hear coming down the end of the bench, the goalies, Cerattori, Mazzellini, chirping at each other.
35:15
Dan
And they find out that it was going to be somebody had to buy dinner.
35:20
Dan
You know, the other one who lost the bet, whoever got the first shutout.
35:24
Dan
Well, it was going pretty darn good at that time for one of the goal tenors.
35:27
Dan
I don't remember which one.
35:29
Dan
But as soon as my dad got wind of it as a coach, next shift at whistleblows, next shift up, you know, four guys, you go out.
35:37
Dan
Waste like, hey coach, we need another guy.
35:38
Dan
Nope, we don't.
35:39
Dan
They don't score, three guys go out.
35:41
Dan
Coach, we're short two guys.
35:42
Dan
No, we're good, we're good.
35:45
Dan
They got down to, I think two players and the team finally scored against them to break the shutout.
35:50
Dan
Can you imagine what the parents would do these days?
35:53
Vegoe
Both against average.
35:57
Jûpe
Wow.
36:00
Dan
You know, a lot of great memories and again, very thankful and I don't know if you guys, you know, sometimes you guys are talking about the junior hockey and, you know, I was a benefactor of that.
36:11
Dan
You know, I got to play two years and so I was older coming in.
36:13
Dan
And again, it's different because your friends are already into college two years, three years, basically.
36:18
Dan
And so when you're out and they're got real jobs, you're not there yet.
36:22
Dan
But you know what, if you have this opportunity like, you know, to wear that kind of jersey, you know, I'll wait a few years to get on with a real career.
36:32
Dan
But it's, the junior hockey is amazing.
36:34
Dan
The competition is crazy good.
36:37
Dan
You know, you got to basically play two years to play in Division 3 now.
36:40
Dan
They don't really want to recruit you otherwise unless you're a special talent that just doesn't have the desire to play Division 1.
36:47
Dan
I've been up to Saskatchewan twice already this year and I ran into actually Brett Larson at the airport in September.
36:54
Dan
So he was heading up to scout, you know, he's St.
36:57
Dan
Cloud coach.
36:57
Dan
He was heading up to scout at Prince Albert, so north of Saskatoon.
37:02
Dan
So my steps...
37:03
Jûpe
Oh boy, there's nothing up there.
37:05
Dan
No, no, no.
37:08
Dan
There is a ferry that goes across the water.
37:10
Dan
So we went to one of the games, the Warman Wolverines, a new program that steps on Hudson plays for.
37:17
Dan
In the Billet family, who he lives with, said, hey, jumping with us will ride to the game over to Humboldt.
37:20
Dan
You know, the whole history of the bus crash and that's not...
37:25
Dan
We leave Saskatoon, we go about 20 minutes, all of a sudden we're going down the hill.
37:29
Dan
Looks like we're going into the river.
37:30
Dan
Nope, stop there, wait for the ferry to come over, pick up six cars and go across and then we get to the game.
37:37
Dan
You know, it just doesn't happen around here.
37:39
Dan
You know, it's pretty amazing.
37:41
Dan
You know, there's so much out there, you know, so many.
37:44
Jûpe
But you think, Veegs, Dan playing two years in juniors wasn't normal back then.
37:51
Vegoe
Not for Minnesota players, really.
37:53
Vegoe
It seemed like Minnesota didn't have as many junior players as other schools did.
38:00
Vegoe
What was that process like?
38:01
Vegoe
How many teammates did you have that played a year or two juniors on the teams you played with?
38:08
Dan
Bobby Dustin played before the season, I think maybe one extra year.
38:12
Dan
Dave Larson, there was the Hillman brothers, did some junior hockey.
38:17
Dan
Mike McGillpine, another teammate of South St.
38:19
Dan
Paul, our dad for friends too.
38:21
Dan
He played a year or two at the Gophers and then after juniors, moved on.
38:25
Dan
The McMorrow kid, his dad, the one from Denver, his dad was my left wing in high school.
38:31
Dan
Then junior hockey together, one national championship together.
38:34
Dan
Guys that were on Duluth, Sitlow and others too.
38:36
Dan
But no, it wasn't many.
38:38
Dan
I mean, again, Checos and Crowleys and Trebles, and they weren't all doing it.
38:45
Dan
It was different too.
38:48
Dan
Now, you got that draft.
38:50
Dan
In that day and age, it was the Vulcans had first did on players from certain teams.
38:57
Dan
So they had the rights to the South St.
39:00
Dan
Paul kids, to some of the Kennedy kids, Chris Markstrom, I don't remember that, Wyzeta, Derek Rolofsky, Edison, where Joe Disick was from, his goalie there, who went to BU.
39:14
Dan
It was quite a bit different now.
39:15
Dan
Again, that was the only main league that was out there in the United States.
39:19
Dan
So, now there's all those.
39:21
Vegoe
I remember about that time, I went and saw the Ted Brill tournament, where you have a lot of high school seniors playing an end of the year tournament.
39:30
Vegoe
And I remember just seeing USA's Jell Scouts everywhere there.
39:33
Vegoe
Cause at that time, a lot of players weren't tied to anywhere.
39:37
Vegoe
And I don't know if a lot of the USA's Jell coaches had seen all these players that were playing in this weekend.
39:43
Vegoe
And I just remember being such a Minnesota fan growing up.
39:48
Vegoe
I knew about the USA's Jell.
39:50
Vegoe
I played in the Mike Foley Summer Hockey School.
39:52
Vegoe
And Mike Foley always had tickets to the Vulcans to give away to the players of the day.
39:58
Vegoe
And we just kind of didn't know.
39:59
Vegoe
And now it's just like, that's the path.
40:02
Vegoe
You have to go and you have to have success there before you advance.
40:06
Dan
When with the Vulcans, we played it.
40:08
Dan
All our home games are Sunday nights.
40:10
Dan
So I think that was partially planned for all the college scouts to come in, go to their college games on the weekend, Sunday, watch ours, then fly out, because we're close to the airport and everything, versus going to Waterloo or we played Thunder Bay, they kicked the crap out of us physically.
40:27
Dan
But you learn, you do those grinds and you toughen up and you get stronger physically.
40:32
Dan
You got that time to grow and develop mentally as well.
40:36
Dan
We had one game down in North Iowa, North Iowa Huskies down in Mason City and it was great.
40:42
Dan
We had Tommy Ward and Mike Gensler, our coaches and Ward was down at Shattuck St.
40:46
Dan
Mary's been there forever now.
40:48
Dan
He's a staple there and great coach.
40:50
Dan
He was a great baseball player too.
40:52
Dan
But we were winning five to two in the game.
40:57
Dan
But in the second period, we got a little skirmish.
41:00
Dan
Me and Dave Larson, another guy, and it wasn't a major fight or anything, but it was enough, we got kicked out.
41:05
Dan
So it was five to two going to third period.
41:08
Dan
We end up losing in overtime.
41:11
Jûpe
Oh, boy.
41:12
Dan
Yeah, and that didn't make Gensel happy, and everybody started coming off the ice, heads are down and get into the locker room, and he said, take your skates off.
41:23
Dan
The guys start taking their helmets off.
41:25
Dan
He goes, no, only your skates.
41:27
Dan
Get in the bus, we're going now.
41:30
Dan
We got back to the Funsburg Arena at one in the morning, and it was a crisp practice.
41:36
Dan
The three of us, we were laughing because we had already showered up.
41:39
Jûpe
Oh, boy.
41:43
Dan
But you learn to hate losing, maybe as much as you love winning sometimes.
41:47
Dan
You kind of get the rewards of it.
41:49
Dan
You can play cribbage and so forth and make some new friends.
41:52
Dan
And it was a great experience.
41:54
Dan
And the Hubbard family now brought that down to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
41:57
Dan
They've got two different levels of the NHL and the NH3.
42:00
Dan
And again, just a passion for the game and for developing people.
42:05
Dan
It's awesome.
42:07
Jûpe
All right, Veegs, we need to get to your top 20 here real quick.
42:10
Jûpe
But before that, we need to talk about Gateway Fiber, Veegs.
42:15
Vegoe
Yeah, Minnesota, where the state of hockey and a bad Internet connections, like a bad line chain, slows everything down, causes chaos, might even lose the game, especially if you're short handed, because you had two idiots get in a fight and put you down going into the third period.
42:30
Vegoe
But Gateway Fiber is here to keep your nets gating at full speed.
42:33
Vegoe
They've been taking on big cable for years and have come to Minnesota offering faster speeds, better reliability and customer service that doesn't sit in the penalty box.
42:42
Vegoe
Gateway Fiber is just another provider.
42:44
Vegoe
They're on your team.
42:45
Vegoe
Visit gatewayfiber.com or call 888-201-4339 to see if Gateway Fiber is available in your area, because life's too short for bad air net.
42:59
Jûpe
All righty.
43:01
Jûpe
Veegs, your top 20 this week.
43:03
Jûpe
You still have the Badgers up top, don't you?
43:07
Vegoe
I do, because those Wolverines are just dirty players, even though they beat Harvard and won in overtime.
43:13
Vegoe
You know, Wisconsin didn't play.
43:15
Vegoe
I had Wisconsin ahead.
43:17
Vegoe
I think they've maybe played a little bit tougher schedule, perhaps.
43:21
Vegoe
I'm not going to make too much about the Wolverines beating Harvard and going to OT.
43:26
Vegoe
You know, they did go to OT against the Crimson.
43:28
Vegoe
So, you know, that's probably something they didn't expect to have happen this last weekend.
43:33
Vegoe
You know, Michigan State also recovered from being swept by Wisconsin.
43:37
Vegoe
They go and sweep Colgate.
43:39
Vegoe
Nice weekend for them.
43:41
Vegoe
I think we've got a big series coming up this weekend with Sparty and the Wolverines.
43:46
Vegoe
So that should be must see TV this weekend.
43:49
Jûpe
North Dakota, Western, still strong there, Duluths.
43:53
Jûpe
It's Big Ten and NCHC till number nine there, Veegs.
43:58
Vegoe
Yeah, I mean, I just don't know what to think of the East.
44:01
Vegoe
You know, very inconsistent.
44:03
Vegoe
You know, Quinnipiac goes to overtime with Holy Cross.
44:07
Vegoe
You know, that's not a very impressive win for them there.
44:10
Vegoe
And then they play Stonehill.
44:11
Vegoe
So kind of a down week there for the Bobcats and Rampact Old.
44:16
Vegoe
Northeastern picked up a win against Brown.
44:18
Vegoe
I like the Huskies, but we'll see what happens.
44:21
Vegoe
I think the Beanpot will be crucial for Northeastern to kind of get some momentum this season.
44:27
Vegoe
But it's just hard to know what to make of ECAC and Hockey East.
44:30
Vegoe
You know, I listen to the USCHO guys break it down.
44:33
Vegoe
And they're like, oh, watch out for Dartmouth and watch out for Harvard.
44:36
Vegoe
Watch out for Union.
44:37
Vegoe
And, you know, I think only one of those teams is going to make the tournament at the end of the year.
44:41
Vegoe
So I'll be watching out for one of them.
44:46
Jûpe
Minnesota State keeps creeping up as well there, Veegs.
44:50
Vegoe
Yeah, they've they've had a good weekend here sweeping northern Michigan.
44:57
Vegoe
You know, we'll see what the CCHA has at the end of the year.
45:01
Vegoe
Minnesota State can stay hot.
45:03
Vegoe
You know, they can maybe get an at-large bid and not have to win the tournament, but they're going to have to play really well.
45:09
Vegoe
You know, the CCHA didn't have a great out-of-conference schedule this year, so they're kind of leading the pack.
45:17
Dan
When you got a hot goaltender, you can make it do some damage to their trip, that Alex Tracy kid.
45:24
Vegoe
Yeah, Luke Strand has a system that really supports good goaltending.
45:27
Vegoe
You know, they don't have to do a ton.
45:29
Vegoe
They have to make that initial save, and they have a lot of help.
45:33
Vegoe
I think we've seen the Mavericks over the years prop up their goaltenders who can make that big first save.
45:41
Jûpe
Anything else you want to talk about the gigs?
45:43
Jûpe
Colorado College back in there, Miami back in there, because obviously we know Miami had a strong start, then faltered a little bit, but now they're back up there for you.
45:51
Vegoe
Yeah, they won two games at the Friendship Four.
45:54
Vegoe
RIT, who's a good Atlantic team, Union, who's one of those dangerous teams in the ECAC that UCHO likes to prop up, but they've had a good start.
46:07
Vegoe
Give their program a lot of credit.
46:08
Vegoe
They brought in a lot of new players there, and they're trying to change the culture.
46:13
Vegoe
We'll see what happens when they get in the conference play, because it's not going to be easy for them going forward.
46:19
Jûpe
Well, hopefully, they're not the bottom of the league, like they've been for a while.
46:23
Jûpe
They've been kicked around for quite a while in the NCHC.
46:27
Vegoe
Yeah, it's been a rough go for the Brotherhood of Oxford.
46:32
Vegoe
Just outside the top 20 is probably Minnesota.
46:35
Vegoe
You know, there's still one game below 500.
46:38
Vegoe
They did get the win over Denver, but it wasn't over time.
46:41
Vegoe
You know, as we talked about, there's a lot of good things going on for Minnesota right now.
46:45
Vegoe
But they really need some wins here this weekend.
46:48
Vegoe
I've been looking a little bit at the MPI compared to Cratch and Parawise.
46:53
Vegoe
And I do think the rankings in MPI weight that home road stuff more than ever before in these rankings for determining the tournament.
47:04
Vegoe
And you look at the Gophers, they've played four road games, I believe, this year.
47:09
Vegoe
So that's not helping them in the MPI where I think they're still in the 30s.
47:14
Vegoe
So winning these games at Ohio State coming up this weekend, really critical for them.
47:19
Vegoe
You know, they're going to have to get some wins here in the Big Ten on the road, I think to boost their possibility of making the tournament.
47:25
Dan
January is going to be a back to back to back.
47:28
Jûpe
Oh boy, a nice gauntlet.
47:29
Dan
Michigan State, and it's going to be a great opportunity to right.
47:33
Dan
I mean, to move yourself up and take care of your own business.
47:36
Vegoe
Pressure is a privilege.
47:38
Dan
Isn't it amazing how things change?
47:40
Dan
The VUs way down here to BC is kind of middle of the package.
47:45
Dan
Northern Michigan, what?
47:46
Dan
Winless.
47:48
Jûpe
Oh, yes.
47:49
Dan
Nineteen ninety one national champions.
47:51
Dan
My brother was on that team.
47:53
Jûpe
I was going to ask you about that.
47:54
Jûpe
That was my next question, actually.
47:57
Dan
Yeah, he actually didn't play.
47:58
Dan
That was the one at the old St.
47:59
Dan
Paul Civic Center with the clearboard.
48:00
Dan
Yeah, he actually didn't play.
48:02
Dan
He played more than half the games that year as a freshman.
48:05
Dan
But when you have, yeah, Mark Buffay had 20 goals score on your fourth line, you know, Dallas Drake, Billy Pye.
48:12
Dan
Billy Pye.
48:13
Dan
What a great name to Brad Blanka.
48:16
Dan
I mean, all these guys had great NHL careers or strong ones anyway.
48:20
Jûpe
And but he still gets bragging rights, doesn't he?
48:24
Dan
He does.
48:24
Jûpe
Does he still rub it in?
48:28
Dan
He never brings it out.
48:29
Dan
He never brings it out.
48:30
Dan
But he's got the old competitiveness like my dad had.
48:35
Dan
We play like tomorrow morning.
48:36
Dan
You guys are going to keep me up past my bedtime, which is fine.
48:39
Dan
We play every Tuesday, Thursday mornings at 630 and Eagan.
48:42
Dan
We get out there and just get a good sweat, have some laughs.
48:47
Dan
But, you know, Northern Mission is near and dear to my heart because that's where I got my only hat trick against.
48:54
Dan
I'd never scored a hat trick growing up, and I got one, I think it was my junior year at Mariucci.
49:00
Dan
We won those games, I think, 10-0 and 7-0.
49:03
Dan
But the great part about that is I get my first ever hat trick.
49:07
Dan
I'm feeling great, feeling good, you know, not at the time thinking, yeah, maybe I'll be player of the week, right?
49:13
Dan
But I didn't even play the next game.
49:15
Dan
Saturday night, coach sat me, somebody else got hit.
49:20
Jûpe
What a jerk of a coach would do that.
49:22
Dan
Family favoritism there.
49:25
Dan
You know what's the right thing to do?
49:26
Dan
Well, maybe not.
49:27
Dan
Yeah.
49:30
Vegoe
It almost feels like probably having your dad coach is like the opposite of favoritism because they have to do it a little differently.
49:39
Vegoe
What was that like throughout your college career?
49:42
Vegoe
The relationship is obviously a little bit different.
49:44
Vegoe
We've seen lots of siblings where one will play for their dad and one wants to go somewhere else for a different experience.
49:51
Vegoe
We see that a lot in college hockey.
49:53
Dan
I think Lucia had that too.
49:54
Dan
Didn't you have a kid that went to Notre Dame too?
49:58
Dan
When they were talking about Tony Lucia being possibly recruited there and I sent Donna Noah just saying, I've been there, lived through this situation.
50:08
Dan
If he's good fit, don't shy away.
50:10
Dan
If he wants to play there.
50:12
Dan
Tony was a strong contributor, held his own for sure.
50:17
Dan
I'm again fortunate that I maybe stats wise, held my own more than I thought I ever would, but take good pride in being a role player too.
50:26
Dan
You want to block shots, you want to be on that penalty kill, give the Bonnens and Crawleys and we go up on these guys, the opportunity to rest maybe a little bit so they can be ready to go their next shift.
50:37
Dan
So that was a little bit of my strategy.
50:39
Dan
I knew I wasn't at the high end of my group.
50:41
Dan
If I go out there and even a buddy of mine, Eric Ruud, who's coaching at St.
50:45
Dan
Cloud, I think now assistant there and he's in the San Francisco Heights rivalry.
50:49
Dan
But that's the greatest part about it.
50:51
Dan
We all respect each other as the years go by.
50:55
Dan
But I would try to grab him and try to mix it up with him and a bunch of players.
50:58
Dan
So hopefully I'd go to the box for two minutes, but their best defense would go to the box for two minutes.
51:03
Dan
I thought that was a great trade off for us.
51:06
Dan
I'm always trying to think through that a little bit.
51:09
Dan
Normally a pretty good trade off.
51:13
Dan
But some great, great times.
51:15
Jûpe
Yeah, that would still get me though.
51:18
Jûpe
If my brother was coming up to me and said, oh, look at this ring I have that you don't have.
51:22
Jûpe
Oh, that's just a little, just knife right in there.
51:27
Jûpe
But what a national championship game that was.
51:30
Jûpe
That's still one of the craziest games ever.
51:34
Dan
Triple overtime, eight to seven, McEacher and he's got three Gs.
51:37
Dan
And unbelievable what talent was out there, that BU Northern Michigan game.
51:46
Jûpe
How was your dad during that game?
51:48
Jûpe
Was he just full on cheering or was it tough for him?
51:51
Speaker 4
Or how about you?
51:53
Dan
Well, again, we had that scenario, cause we're in the same league then, right?
51:57
Dan
Northern Michigan, Minnesota, right?
51:59
Dan
Well, who else is in this game?
52:01
Dan
Mom is, right?
52:02
Dan
So, she got her two boys playing against each other.
52:06
Dan
I actually got him once.
52:07
Dan
I was on a four check into the off zone.
52:09
Dan
I went like this and kind of went up and caught him off the chin, my brother.
52:13
Dan
Not that I was trying to, but he was wearing green and white.
52:19
Jûpe
Well, yeah.
52:21
Dan
I got beaten up so many times by trying to throw the hit.
52:24
Dan
But if you can dislodge the player or steal the puck, wherever it is, that was what I felt was my job.
52:30
Dan
But mom was asked how many times when we go playing, and she's quoted by whether it's the old Charlie Walters or maybe Greg Wong, those old names.
52:41
Dan
Wonger.
52:42
Dan
And well, who are you cheering for, Jan?
52:46
Dan
Well, I'm cheering for who gets the paycheck.
52:51
Dan
Jan's not making me any money.
52:53
Dan
Steve's got a scholarship though, so that's good.
52:56
Dan
But hopefully, Doug continues to get a paycheck.
52:59
Dan
So, you know, flight attendant job doesn't pay great.
53:02
Dan
Coaching job, I don't know if I sent you that picture the other day, $52,000 was the salary for my dad back mid late 80s or something.
53:10
Dan
And again, that was probably a lot of money at the time.
53:13
Dan
We got a $2,200 bonus if you won the WCHA Championship Playoff.
53:19
Dan
And maybe that's how we got to go on spring break, you know.
53:22
Jûpe
Vage, didn't you have to remind Matzko of a bonus that he missed?
53:28
Vegoe
Yeah, because they had the tie breakers on like point percentage instead of Wisconsin.
53:34
Vegoe
Like, yeah, so the raw points.
53:37
Vegoe
And if they would have like done it just a little bit different, Minnesota would have gotten the title instead.
53:42
Vegoe
And he would have gotten the paycheck and he hadn't even thought about it.
53:46
Jûpe
So, yeah, but that was also like a 30 grand check though.
53:50
Vegoe
30 grand.
53:51
Vegoe
It's, you know, it's gone up since the 80s.
53:56
Dan
I got a chance to see Bob two summers ago.
53:58
Dan
I think it was up till, you know, he's got a place up by Gull Lake up there.
54:03
Dan
And we're in Pequot Lake.
54:04
Dan
It's been there since 1934, my dad and his dad and so forth.
54:08
Dan
That's our family group there and my brother.
54:09
Dan
And they got the next door cabin too now.
54:11
Dan
And, and, but I was on the jet skis with my wife, Danielle, and we're going through the little channel.
54:16
Dan
We went on a Niswa Lake route off of Highway 371.
54:19
Dan
We're little shopping areas.
54:21
Dan
And we're going through a channel and like, gosh, this guy in front of us in this pontoon, man, damn, I wish he would get moving a little bit.
54:26
Dan
He's chugging along and there's another couple in there.
54:29
Dan
And finally, he slows down.
54:31
Dan
He kind of comes to a stop.
54:32
Dan
So I weave around.
54:34
Dan
Again, it's in the no wake zone.
54:35
Dan
But I weave around and I go, hey, Bob, what are you doing?
54:40
Dan
What's he doing?
54:41
Dan
He's stopping to talk to Reed Larson.
54:43
Dan
You know, it's such a small world, you know, small world and so many good people.
54:48
Dan
And I watched some clips of Reed Larson the other day from, I think it was in 1975, again, on YouTube, a national championship game against Michigan Tech.
54:57
Dan
And boy, he was a heck of a player.
55:00
Jûpe
Oh, yeah.
55:01
Jûpe
Oh, yeah.
55:03
Jûpe
Well, before we get into OSU this weekend, we're going to talk about some of the other things that you've done in the past year.
55:11
Vegoe
And I'm going to start with a little bit of a little bit of a quick summary of what we've done in the past year.
55:17
Vegoe
We've done a lot of things.
55:18
Vegoe
We've done a lot of things.
55:19
Vegoe
We've done a lot of things.
55:20
Vegoe
We've done a lot of things.
55:21
Vegoe
We've done a lot of things.
55:22
Vegoe
We've done a lot of things.
55:23
Vegoe
We've done a lot of things.
55:24
Vegoe
We've done a lot of things.
55:26
Vegoe
We've done a lot of things.
55:26
Vegoe
We've done a lot of things.
55:27
Vegoe
We've done a lot of things.
55:28
Vegoe
We've done a lot of things.
55:29
Vegoe
Go to Marshmallows, Cubs got you covered.
55:31
Vegoe
If you're still looking for those, you know, seasonal apples and caramel dips, go in that produce section, they're all right together.
55:38
Vegoe
So Cozy Night Inn is like a number one thing to do here coming up.
55:43
Vegoe
So Cub has the flavors that make fall or winter, if you like fall or winter.
55:47
Vegoe
So swing by your local Cub, stock up on all your seasonal favorites, because nothing says fall in Minnesota like comfort food from Cub.
55:54
Vegoe
Shop happy.
55:57
Jûpe
All right, of course, we thank Gateway and Cub for sponsoring The GPL Podcast.
56:02
Dan
Well, Cub Foods is about a mile down the road here, if that, for my house.
56:06
Dan
And with six kids, Daniel and I have six kids, and we've got Ellie, Carlin, Jake, Hudson, Haley, we're there two, three times a week.
56:14
Dan
You know, it's you're running out of bread.
56:16
Dan
We're going to make a run for it.
56:17
Dan
You need some donuts.
56:18
Dan
Let's go.
56:19
Dan
You know, so I got that on autopilot.
56:22
Jûpe
Cub is Boomer approved.
56:26
Vegoe
Yeah, I live here in Northeast.
56:29
Vegoe
I'm a mile away, so it's just a simple little walk, hopefully to pick up things and get them back up the hill.
56:34
Vegoe
So great little spots.
56:38
Jûpe
Ohio State this weekend, Veegs, they started pretty good.
56:41
Jûpe
They were in your top 20 for a little while.
56:44
Jûpe
Are these I don't think believe they're there anymore, are they?
56:46
Vegoe
No, they're not there anymore.
56:48
Vegoe
You know, they they've struggled just a little bit here down the stretch.
56:52
Vegoe
You know, they got beat up pretty good by Michigan this last weekend where I think Michigan scored like what, seven goals on them one night and five the next.
57:01
Vegoe
So tough, tough start to them here.
57:03
Vegoe
They just lost two games in OT at Arizona State.
57:06
Vegoe
And when we're talking about the Gophers playing Ohio State, the Gophers really only get one practice coming back from Denver.
57:14
Vegoe
I don't know if people listen to the availability, but they got stuck in the airports for a little bit as, you know, the first night their pilot timed out by like four minutes.
57:24
Vegoe
They had a plane where they didn't have enough staff to fly out.
57:29
Vegoe
They had another one with the naVeegsation thing went out.
57:31
Vegoe
The pilot said that's the first time in 29 years that's happened.
57:35
Vegoe
So they didn't get back until late Sunday night.
57:38
Vegoe
And then they took Monday off and they had kind of a light practice on Tuesday.
57:43
Vegoe
And then they flew out Wednesday today.
57:46
Jûpe
And they had practice when they got there.
57:48
Vegoe
Yep, they had practice when they got there.
57:50
Vegoe
So tough week.
57:51
Vegoe
Bob said, luckily for Minnesota, they've played a couple teams that play a similar style.
57:57
Vegoe
Notre Dame, LIU play kind of that neutral zone, 1-1-3.
58:02
Vegoe
I think that's what we'll see this weekend with the Buckeyes.
58:05
Vegoe
Rolex often has these teams that have to learn the systems a little bit throughout the year.
58:10
Vegoe
And they're always getting better as the year goes on.
58:13
Vegoe
So, it's going to be a tough match up for Minnesota.
58:16
Vegoe
You know, you hear the term rock fight quite a bit with the Gophers for this weekend, and that's what they're going to have to execute.
58:22
Jûpe
Just to quickly jump in here, Andrew Carlson talking about Reid Larson, cracked my dad's sternum with a slapper in high school.
58:33
Jûpe
Ouch!
58:35
Jûpe
Wow!
58:36
Jûpe
That's a crack your sternum on a slapshot?
58:41
Jûpe
I may want to, of course, next time he came down on the ice, he probably backed away quite a bit, or all players would.
58:49
Jûpe
So, Ohio State, did you ever get to play against Ohio State?
58:53
Jûpe
You probably never did, did you?
58:55
Dan
No, no, we never did.
58:57
Dan
You know, there's a number of teams, you know, that we wouldn't, we would have played then, not now.
59:01
Dan
You know, Alaska, Anchorage, those trips were kind of fun.
59:04
Dan
Sometimes we'd leave Wednesdays to go up to Alaska and I know one time we went through, I think it was Seattle, stay the night there, continue down the next day, the bus pulls into town.
59:15
Dan
We see two rinks on the outdoor rink, side by side, a bunch of kids playing out there.
59:20
Dan
And my dad said, hey guys, let's go grab our stuff and get out and have a little practice time.
59:24
Dan
So we hit the outdoor rink in town and all the kids kind of gave us one rink and then they all mingled together and played together.
59:31
Dan
And again, tried to create a fun environment there.
59:34
Dan
But no, we didn't get a chance.
59:36
Dan
I mean, that.
59:38
Jûpe
Yeah, they were in CCHA.
59:39
Dan
Yeah.
59:40
Dan
Yeah.
59:40
Jûpe
And you would have been part of the College Hockey Showcase, though, which was still one of my favorite.
59:48
Jûpe
That's what started the rivalry with Michigan for me.
59:51
Dan
Yeah.
59:51
Dan
And I hate it.
59:52
Dan
I hate it when you talk about the Michigan because I was in that game on the bench trying to figure out what the hell just happened.
59:59
Vegoe
Phrasing Jupe, phrasing.
1:00:02
Jûpe
Hey, it's I was talking about the College Hockey Showcase, not the overtime loss with Mike Legge.
1:00:10
Dan
Thanksgiving Showcase.
1:00:11
Jûpe
Yeah, that was it was so fun because it first started at all the big readings.
1:00:15
Jûpe
You know, you're at Civic Center, you're at Bradley Center, you're out at Lewis, Joe Lewis and there was big crowds.
1:00:23
Jûpe
I mean, I remember one year there was at St.
1:00:26
Jûpe
Paul Civic Center and I think Bonnen won it late in the game and it was packed house.
1:00:31
Jûpe
Eighteen thousand people for Michigan, which we hadn't really seen much in the previous decade since they had left the WCHA.
1:00:41
Dan
Yeah, in all those days with Brendan Morrison and Mike Blake and Marty Turco in goal.
1:00:48
Dan
And I mean, they had some phenomenal players, you know, phenomenal players.
1:00:53
Jûpe
So I think that's Veeks.
1:00:54
Jûpe
That's always going to help me with teams like Michigan and Michigan State because those were great games during the season.
1:00:59
Jûpe
They didn't feel like exhibitions at all.
1:01:02
Jûpe
Ohio State, we still need to I think we still need some bad blood with Ohio State before it becomes more of a real rivalry in hockey.
1:01:10
Vegoe
Yeah, Ohio State is one of the teams where it just kind of seems like difficult games, but not anything that's approaching rivalry.
1:01:19
Vegoe
I think one of the big problems in this matchup is that the fan support for the Buckeyes just isn't quite the same as some of these other programs.
1:01:26
Vegoe
They don't have a Children of Yost group to follow them around.
1:01:31
Vegoe
So I think that's always been challenging.
1:01:33
Vegoe
I think with this weekend, it's going to be a little find-your-own-juice kind of stuff for the team.
1:01:40
Vegoe
I think for Minnesota, it's going to be important for them to generate their own energy and have two productive games with a short turnaround, probably a building that won't be very full.
1:01:52
Vegoe
It's going to be a challenging environment, a game that's going to be a rock fight, and it's going to have to take some discipline.
1:01:59
Dan
Yeah.
1:02:01
Dan
Again, it's got to come from within.
1:02:03
Dan
When you're going the road, when it's kind of a quiet arena, you can't feed off the negativity of the arena.
1:02:08
Dan
Like you could maybe at Wisconsin with the Badgers and telling you what that people you are.
1:02:15
Dan
My mom quit going to Wisconsin.
1:02:16
Dan
She couldn't go there anymore.
1:02:19
Dan
When I was playing, she just said, I can't take it, but not to say I have some great friends that played for Wisconsin too, in North Dakota and St.
1:02:26
Dan
Cloud.
1:02:27
Jûpe
Oh, yeah.
1:02:28
Dan
So hockey fraternity stretches, but I mean, they have plenty to play for.
1:02:33
Dan
So there's there's don't have to say a whole lot to say, here's what's at stake with these games, you know, and I don't know who says that, you know, the ones at the beginning and just the important ones at the end are right.
1:02:43
Dan
So they're all important, you know, and we need the winds back.
1:02:46
Dan
We need the winds back.
1:02:47
Jûpe
I mean, I'm just going to say, it's going to you win two games this weekend, it puts you in contention right back up there in the Big Ten race.
1:02:57
Jûpe
It also fulfills kind of those winds on the road that you were just talking about earlier.
1:03:03
Jûpe
So this is huge.
1:03:04
Vegoe
Yeah, that's what I was going to get right back to is the Gophers need some road winds for their MPI.
1:03:10
Vegoe
It's weighted heavier in this new format and this new math, you have to win a little bit on the road.
1:03:17
Vegoe
I think one of the things the coaches always talked about is they didn't want teams buying their schedule and buying their way in the tournament and buying regionals.
1:03:26
Vegoe
They're trying to put some levers in to neutralize that a little bit.
1:03:30
Vegoe
So it's really critical for Minnesota to win.
1:03:32
Vegoe
I think Ohio State is going to be one of those teams in the bottom half of the Big Ten.
1:03:36
Vegoe
So these are probably some of the easier road winds potentially.
1:03:40
Vegoe
I told Bob, Ohio State probably doesn't have the record that they want.
1:03:45
Vegoe
He's like, I don't look at their record.
1:03:48
Vegoe
I guarantee you some of the players have peaked at the standings and peaked at the schedule and know that this isn't a team that's had a lot of success, but that's not going to matter.
1:03:56
Vegoe
You know, they're going to have to play their A game.
1:03:58
Vegoe
This is a team that can't outscore their mistakes very often.
1:04:02
Vegoe
And I don't think Ohio State is going to let you do that either.
1:04:06
Dan
They're well coached.
1:04:07
Dan
You know, Rolloc's been around the block for decades.
1:04:10
Dan
And, you know, it's just they're going to keep building.
1:04:12
Dan
Like you said, I think they get better as the year goes on too.
1:04:15
Dan
And I think Minnesota is on that same path.
1:04:16
Dan
And, you know, I'd expect to have pretty tight games this weekend.
1:04:19
Dan
And I think they had who was at Penn State on the ropes, I think Ohio State or somebody, and then let them in late.
1:04:25
Dan
And then they got scored on later again or something.
1:04:28
Dan
So, I mean, like I said, any given night, any given night, you got to bring your game.
1:04:33
Jûpe
What's your pick, Veegs?
1:04:35
Jûpe
What are the point distribution this weekend?
1:04:39
Vegoe
I think the Gophers get five points this weekend.
1:04:44
Vegoe
It's not going to be easy.
1:04:45
Vegoe
I think one of the games is going to OT, and they're going to drop one of the points there.
1:04:48
Vegoe
But I think they do get an overtime win, and they do get a regulation win.
1:04:53
Jûpe
Five points.
1:04:54
Jûpe
That's a successful weekend, I would say.
1:04:56
Jûpe
What do you think, Dan?
1:04:58
Dan
I was actually thinking the same thing, but I know, Joobs, you're the one that predicts everything right too.
1:05:05
Dan
So, I guess I can't go with the same, right?
1:05:08
Dan
But that was what I was going to go with.
1:05:09
Jûpe
You can do whatever you want.
1:05:11
Vegoe
You can get specific, you can say which night.
1:05:13
Dan
A win in an overtime loss.
1:05:16
Dan
Oh, four points.
1:05:19
Jûpe
I'm even more negative.
1:05:20
Jûpe
I think it's a split.
1:05:22
Jûpe
I think I'm, hey, sweep somebody on the road, and then you'll get me on board.
1:05:31
Jûpe
It's just, Veegss, we've seen it.
1:05:33
Jûpe
We just haven't seen that consistency.
1:05:34
Jûpe
It was different last weekend.
1:05:35
Jûpe
It was a one-off game.
1:05:39
Jûpe
So right now, I'm saying split.
1:05:40
Jûpe
I'm glad.
1:05:41
Jûpe
I don't think Mote is watching live, otherwise he would have gone after me, but he'll go after me later.
1:05:47
Jûpe
So I'm saying split, but I would definitely be happier with something better.
1:05:54
Dan
That'd be great going into the break, and some guys getting ready to go off to other teams with the World Juniors, and that's going to be awesome.
1:06:01
Dan
We're going to go to at least one of the USA games, and at St.
1:06:06
Dan
Paul, and at least one Canadian, because my step's on the dual citizen, so we're going to go to a Canadian game too, while he's still in town.
1:06:13
Dan
So love it.
1:06:15
Dan
We're lucky we're in Minnesota.
1:06:16
Dan
We've got all this hockey to go to or to coach, as these does too, and I did 12 years of that, and a couple with the boys, a lot with my girls, Elliott Carlin's teams, and it was a highlight, and to be able to give back like you're doing too, it feels good to get respectful kids that are hopefully they're learning more about other life lessons.
1:06:40
Dan
Things aren't always going to go your way.
1:06:43
Dan
You know, that was one of my dad's.
1:06:45
Dan
Kind of towards the end of the years, we had them with our U12A team, and we called them their unofficial advisor, consultant to our team because he had two granddaughters.
1:06:56
Dan
He had Olivia and Carlin on the same team because we had come up combined in different organizations, Enveral Heights and Eagan for the right numbers to have an A and two Bs, have the right one of goalies, all those challenges in youth hockey that aren't so fun.
1:07:08
Dan
But yeah, it was pretty awesome to see them get a chance to come to the locker room after you're upsetting number one team, Andover in the cake eater tournament after he comes in, puts his arm around the gate.
1:07:24
Dan
And one of the best parts about that was the Andover team was number one all year basically, and their parents bought them donuts because they were expecting to win that morning against us.
1:07:33
Dan
But when they didn't win, they gave the donuts to our locker room.
1:07:37
Jûpe
Hey, that's pretty good.
1:07:39
Jûpe
That's pretty good.
1:07:40
Jûpe
I like that.
1:07:41
Dan
But you know, so like Hank and Casey, he's helped coach over the years with his daughters, too.
1:07:46
Dan
I mean, there's a lot of guys.
1:07:48
Dan
I'm not sure if Jeff Mowen, Jesse Bergliaz coach.
1:07:50
Dan
I mean, a lot of guys we played with got involved.
1:07:53
Dan
You know, and that's great because again, good quality people that know the game, hopefully can help develop these kids, too.
1:08:01
Dan
And not necessarily focused exactly on winning and losing is developing and having a great experience.
1:08:07
Jûpe
Well, thanks for coming on the show.
1:08:09
Jûpe
Are you ready for some overtime with us?
1:08:11
Dan
I'm ready.
1:08:12
Dan
It's more than five minutes, right?
1:08:15
Jûpe
I hope so.
1:08:16
Jûpe
Yes, it will be.
1:08:18
Jûpe
But definitely thanks for coming on.
1:08:20
Jûpe
We had a lot of great stories and we're going to have more stories coming up in overtime.
1:08:24
Jûpe
But a really big thanks for you to come on the show.
1:08:28
Dan
I appreciate it.
1:08:29
Dan
I enjoyed it.
1:08:29
Dan
I love listening to you guys.
1:08:31
Dan
Like I said, I'm religious every week.
1:08:33
Dan
You guys got great people on there.
1:08:35
Dan
I just want to make sure if I talk more than Pat Micheletti cut me off way sooner.
1:08:40
Jûpe
No, that's not possible.
1:08:42
Dan
I text him and it's awesome.
1:08:43
Dan
He's doing better obviously with his health situation.
1:08:46
Dan
I sent a note to him the other day too.
1:08:47
Dan
And again, even though our ages are this hard, I grew up in it.
1:08:53
Dan
I mean, I grew up in 1986.
1:08:56
Dan
So when dad started coaching, I was in middle school or so, and we were there every weekend.
1:09:02
Dan
Every weekend we're there and tickets were only about $7 too.
1:09:06
Jûpe
But I wish that was still the case.
1:09:08
Dan
Great, great, great experience at Old Rink.
1:09:10
Dan
I do miss it.
1:09:11
Dan
I think it was a great ice sheet and walking up those stairs, you know, still would give you chills to say so.
1:09:17
Jûpe
Yeah, and Nick Angel will disagree.
1:09:19
Jûpe
He hates those stairs, any stairs.
1:09:25
Dan
Nick could get on the stair master a couple of times.
1:09:27
Dan
I know, I've seen that.
1:09:30
Dan
Nick's the best, Nick's the best.
1:09:31
Dan
And I'm so excited about what he's working on, you know, with the-
1:09:34
Jûpe
We'll get into that a bit in overtime here.
1:09:36
Dan
It's awesome.
1:09:37
Jûpe
But thanks for coming on.
1:09:39
