This is The GPL Podcast, part of the Pulltab Sports family.
0:11
Oh, boy.
0:13
Jup making mistakes, I love it.
0:28
So, Sam, I think you might have gotten kicked out of a game, maybe?
0:31
Yeah.
0:32
For being a dirty player, you know, totally, getting sure.
0:37
Eat that, eat that schloss.
0:40
Eat that, Drew.
0:45
Now, here's Jupiter and Vegoe.
0:53
Jûpe
Good evening and welcome to The GPL Podcast, episode number 295.
1:01
Jûpe
Another roller coaster weekend, Veegs.
1:03
Jûpe
Another roller coaster weekend.
1:06
Vegoe
Yeah, I think most Gopher fans going in the weekend were expecting to see some momentum from the Notre Dame Series.
1:13
Vegoe
When they played the 1-1-3 of LIU and things got tough on Friday, those dreams went down the drain and luckily they rallied a little bit on Saturday to get the split.
1:23
Vegoe
And that's not very encouraging for Gopher fans, but that's where they're at right now.
1:29
Jûpe
Well, we had a therapy session two weeks ago and I already saw last Friday night that they, a lot of fans are saying we need another therapy session.
1:38
Jûpe
I don't know if we're quite there yet again, but I can understand it.
1:43
Jûpe
I mean, it's just not something this program is used to.
1:47
Vegoe
Yeah, they're not used to it.
1:48
Vegoe
And LIU is a challenging team to play against.
1:52
Vegoe
They're older, they won 20 games last year.
1:55
Vegoe
You know, if you look at the MPI, you know, they're not a team like that's at the bottom of it.
2:00
Vegoe
They're not a team in the 50s or 60s or something like that.
2:03
Vegoe
So, you know, they haven't played some tough games.
2:05
Vegoe
And Minnesota hasn't been able to score its mistakes really this year.
2:10
Vegoe
And so when they started stubbing their toe on Friday, they couldn't get away from it.
2:15
Jûpe
All right.
2:15
Jûpe
Well, let's get to our guests.
2:16
Jûpe
We have Cappy on again this week.
2:20
Jûpe
First show of the year.
2:22
Jûpe
And usually we have him for Ohio State.
2:24
Jûpe
But, you know, Veegs's in a couple of weeks.
2:26
Jûpe
We say we're going to have Dan Wu gone to kind of near the anniversary of his father's death.
2:29
Jûpe
So that's why we're having him on now for Penn State.
2:33
Jûpe
Let's bring him in.
2:34
Jûpe
Paul Caponigri, Big Ten Network, former OSU player.
2:41
Cappy
What's up, boys?
2:42
Cappy
Yeah.
2:42
Cappy
Do I have to bring the hope here for the Gophers or is that Big's department or what?
2:50
Cappy
But it's good to be here.
2:52
Cappy
Good to talk some pucks.
2:55
Cappy
The league, man.
2:57
Cappy
Every year, there's always kind of something you don't expect to happen early in a lot of hockey to go.
3:04
Jûpe
Well, to be fair, Figs, we all thought this was going to be a down year.
3:09
Jûpe
Maybe not this much or this much inconsistency.
3:15
Jûpe
When quite a few players didn't come back, the positivity was not as positive.
3:20
Jûpe
I'll tell you that.
3:22
Vegoe
No, they just don't have the leaders on the team who are putting the puck in the net consistently.
3:27
Vegoe
You know, it's probably good for Moscow to see Brody Lamb have some success this past weekend, see Jimmy Clark have some success.
3:36
Vegoe
But there isn't really a high first round pick on this roster that you can just lean on to drive play and you can't lean on them to rally the team.
3:46
Vegoe
And so they're having some guys that are having to pull them in the fight, you know, and when your leaders are guys like Luke Middlestadt and LJ Mooney, you know, it's a little bit of an adjustment.
3:56
Vegoe
And those two guys have really set the tone a lot of the time for the Gophers this season.
4:01
Vegoe
And you know, it's been a little slower than everyone would like, I think so far.
4:07
Jûpe
And Cappy, you know, your messaging goes, I think you messaged us after Friday night and you were like, I don't know how I'm going to be positive guys on the show next week.
4:15
Jûpe
I'll do my best.
4:17
Cappy
Well, that was, I think, after the second period of Friday night's game.
4:21
Jûpe
Yeah.
4:22
Cappy
I was hoping for a big comeback in the third period.
4:27
Cappy
Yeah.
4:27
Cappy
I mean, you look at the roster, it's a it's I think it's a solid roster, but yeah, there's nobody that jumps off the page, at least right now.
4:36
Cappy
I said this off to you, OK, I think they're going to be, and this is part of this is on them a lot in the coaching staff is I think they're going to be a much better team in the second half.
4:46
Cappy
And maybe maybe you're playing spoiler.
4:48
Cappy
Who know?
4:48
Cappy
I mean, who knows what what kind of role you can get on?
4:52
Cappy
But yeah, it's it's it's it's surprising.
4:55
Cappy
I didn't I thought they'd be around a five hundred team.
4:59
Cappy
Tough schedule, as always.
5:02
Cappy
But yeah, I mean, yeah, Long Island's tough.
5:05
Cappy
I mean, they are.
5:05
Cappy
They did lose their coach.
5:06
Cappy
And some of those are better players went with him the fairest.
5:09
Cappy
But it's pretty cool to see a team kind of they look they play hard.
5:14
Cappy
And it for young teams to play against hard working older teams.
5:20
Cappy
It's that's where the consistency thing comes into play.
5:23
Cappy
And and you know, Minnesota hasn't found that yet.
5:26
Cappy
I still think there's just a lot of talent there that just needs to mature.
5:32
Jûpe
So a 6-2 loss Friday night, Veegs, it did kind of feel like rock bottom at times.
5:39
Jûpe
Yes, we all know LIU is 15th, 20th, whatever they are on the NPI.
5:47
Cappy
But are we allowed to look at that yet?
5:50
Jûpe
Yeah.
5:51
Cappy
Ask, ask.
5:52
Jûpe
It's starting to make sense.
5:53
Jûpe
It's starting to make sense.
5:55
Jûpe
Minnesota is like 40th.
5:56
Jûpe
So, but Veegs, I think it's just more of a old school Gopher mentality.
6:05
Jûpe
We shouldn't be losing these teams like this.
6:07
Jûpe
It's a brand new team, just a few years old.
6:10
Jûpe
But some of us old school guys need to have some different thinking just because of the way college hockey is these days.
6:18
Vegoe
Well, I think it's never been easier to pull together a roster than in this era.
6:23
Vegoe
You know, with all the CHL guys, with all the guys you can pull out of the portal, with all the deferred enrollments that are happening across junior hockey, you're able to pull in guys who are 2021, who are going to be hard to play against.
6:37
Vegoe
And then on top of that, you can get the guys who are 22, 23 in the portal and put together a very competitive roster very quickly.
6:45
Vegoe
You know, you're not a new coach saying, oh, I've got all these holes.
6:48
Vegoe
I can't, I got to pull up an 18 year old.
6:50
Vegoe
No, no coach is really doing that.
6:53
Vegoe
So it's nice that LIU has been able to take advantage of that.
6:58
Vegoe
Minnesota, on the other hand, is stuck with their recruits and has kind of taken their licks.
7:02
Vegoe
And I agree with Cappy.
7:04
Vegoe
I think the Gophers are going to be a much better team in the second half.
7:07
Vegoe
But they just got to continue to make progress.
7:10
Vegoe
And we're seeing some progress on the back end.
7:12
Vegoe
I think Rombach and Whipple are starting to play better.
7:16
Vegoe
Having Cal Thomas back is very important for Minnesota.
7:20
Vegoe
Luke Middlestad has played a ton of men so far.
7:22
Vegoe
They just need a little bit more of that up front.
7:26
Jûpe
Veegs, what do you think of Thomas' return last weekend?
7:30
Vegoe
I thought he was fine.
7:33
Vegoe
He's not really a dynamic first round pick type player.
7:36
Vegoe
He's kind of a defensive guy who's hard to play against.
7:41
Vegoe
You wish the penalty kill was playing a little bit better right now because he can play such a big role on the penalty kill and shut down players that way.
7:50
Vegoe
I think it's been a little slow for his season to get going this year.
7:54
Vegoe
So we're still waiting to see him.
7:58
Jûpe
There was a goal Friday night, Cappy, that I don't know what happened to puck.
8:04
Jûpe
The camera couldn't quite keep up with the puck.
8:05
Jûpe
It must have hit something on the ice because all of a sudden it was in the back of the net.
8:10
Jûpe
And poor Luca was just like, I don't know what just happened himself.
8:16
Cappy
Yeah, I mean, that was, what do they say, the TSM turning point of that game?
8:19
Cappy
Because five seconds before that, I mean, Minnesota had a great day where LIU makes a great save.
8:24
Cappy
So I mean, you're talking two goals swing there in a matter of seconds.
8:28
Cappy
And then that kind of goal, I mean, that's, I don't care what team you are, that is going to be a deflating sequence and is going to challenge any team.
8:36
Cappy
I don't care if you are the 2000 Detroit Red Wings.
8:39
Cappy
I mean, that is just like a really terrible sequence and really tough to come back from.
8:45
Jûpe
You know, I texted Eric Brever Vegs who was behind the goal right where Luka was and he says I kind of even missed it myself and he is literally right there behind the goal.
8:57
Jûpe
He says he was just too busy, like, how did we just miss that goal?
9:01
Jûpe
And also this back in that even he missed it being literally 10 feet away from it.
9:06
Vegoe
Yeah, they say hockey has got the funniest bounces because the puck can be too cold, it can be too hot, it can be the right temperature, it can be sticky, the ice can have ruts in it, the ice can be warm, you get weird things all the time.
9:19
Vegoe
That's just an unlucky one and unlucky to have it come in that game at that time.
9:23
Jûpe
It was a kind of a killer week.
9:27
Cappy
I'll tell you and just the one thing you got this game were easily the best two uniform, the combination with the baby blue, the shark blue, whatever you want to call it.
9:38
Cappy
And then that Gopher jersey is what the kids say fire is that combo is pretty sweet.
9:47
Cappy
Was it both nights that was it that or today?
9:49
Jûpe
Gophers wore different.
9:50
Jûpe
It was just Friday night.
9:51
Jûpe
It was kind of a color rush thing.
9:53
Jûpe
I loved it because I got the shot between the shoot between the benches for two periods.
9:57
Jûpe
And I talked even to you photography is like, you know, a lot of people didn't like LIU's jerseys because it didn't go with their breezers.
10:04
Jûpe
The breezers are just a brief hockey pants.
10:07
Cappy
He's a weird one with the pants.
10:08
Jûpe
Yeah, it is.
10:10
Jûpe
Veegs, I loved the color rush.
10:13
Jûpe
I love that there's enough contrast there that they could play this.
10:16
Jûpe
And, you know, we've talked about how we think North Dakota and Minnesota should always do kind of a color rush when they play.
10:23
Jûpe
I liked what was what was going on Friday night with those colors.
10:26
Jûpe
It was beautiful.
10:27
Vegoe
I thought it was the best thing about having LIU on the schedule is a chance to see those jerseys in person.
10:32
Vegoe
You know, I thought that was great.
10:34
Vegoe
You know, I was just reading something this week about how the NHL is maybe going to start encouraging some more color rush games.
10:41
Vegoe
They're having Detroit against the Rangers, red against blue.
10:44
Vegoe
And, you know, anytime you can get that to work, I think it's great and it's fun to see.
10:49
Cappy
Yeah, they shoot for it in the, sorry, they shoot for those in like the, I think they just show the Panthers and the Rangers, what they're going to wear in the winter classic.
10:58
Cappy
And the going of the pants, like, what would be a good, would the blue be good for the pants or the gold?
11:04
Cappy
I don't think so.
11:05
Cappy
I don't know what they had.
11:07
Cappy
I don't think it's almost too much of one of those if you put the breezers in that color.
11:12
Vegoe
What about white, white pants?
11:15
Cappy
White gloves, white pants.
11:17
Vegoe
Yeah.
11:18
Cappy
Yeah.
11:19
Cappy
And that would be the one of their three colors in their jersey.
11:22
Cappy
I think that would be the one you'd go with.
11:24
Jûpe
Yeah.
11:25
Vegoe
Yeah, you're right.
11:25
Cappy
But the one that they used and I just, you know, if we're going to, that's how bad it went, right?
11:33
Cappy
But, but I mean, even before the game starts, you're like, okay, I'm looking forward to this based on this.
11:38
Jûpe
Yes.
11:40
Jûpe
Vegs, you and I played for the Roobs.
11:44
Jûpe
One time we decided to wear red jerseys when the other team wore green.
11:47
Jûpe
Great color rush, looked great.
11:50
Jûpe
Until one of your meat line, meat line, line mates says, I'm red, green, colorblind.
12:02
Vegoe
Apparently, that's a thing.
12:03
Vegoe
So I guess you got to figure that out too.
12:07
Jûpe
It's too bad.
12:09
Jûpe
He's like, what are you doing?
12:10
Jûpe
I'm color.
12:10
Jûpe
I'm like, all right.
12:12
Jûpe
I didn't know.
12:14
Jûpe
I guess you could have a red, blue.
12:16
Jûpe
I don't know what all the different kind of colorblindness there is, but I guess it could get tricky.
12:24
Jûpe
I know, but I just remember him coming.
12:27
Jûpe
He's like, I'm red, red, green, colorblind.
12:29
Jûpe
I can't tell the difference to the jerseys.
12:30
Jûpe
I'm like, oh my gosh.
12:33
Cappy
That's so fun.
12:34
Jûpe
I think we still won that game being so odd.
12:38
Vegoe
Meeline came through.
12:40
Cappy
I look back now on our, you know, we wore black.
12:44
Cappy
We had black helmets, black pants.
12:46
Cappy
And I'm like, look back on it now.
12:47
Cappy
I'm like, what were you doing?
12:49
Cappy
Because like, I think what now is great when you got the gray and scarlet and the white and, you know, and the helmet.
12:55
Cappy
Like we had, we did go to red, scarlet and white helmets, home and roads.
13:01
Cappy
We never had the football, you know, style like they do now.
13:04
Cappy
I thought that was probably the best thing they've done.
13:06
Cappy
And it just for all teams, like I think it just kind of that, that Jersey, Minnesota had Friday.
13:12
Cappy
I just, that's by far my favorite one I've seen.
13:16
Cappy
It's just fresh.
13:17
Cappy
It kind of has old vibe to it, but also new.
13:21
Cappy
It's, it's, it makes a difference.
13:22
Cappy
I don't, I mean, obviously the team's got to win games.
13:25
Cappy
The fans aren't going to hear it.
13:27
Cappy
You know what?
13:28
Cappy
If they don't, what, you know, I think it, fan kids like that.
13:33
Cappy
I think it's good for recruiting those little things.
13:35
Cappy
It's funny how that, you know, does bring some attention.
13:40
Jûpe
Speaking of attention and bad attention, Veegs, the Gopher penalty kill right now is 62nd out of 63 teams in college hockey right now.
13:52
Jûpe
And it definitely showed Friday night what they give up three out of four opportunities.
13:58
Vegoe
Yeah, it's not going well for the penalty kill.
14:01
Vegoe
And you know, when you ask the coaches about it, they're like, it's on us.
14:05
Vegoe
We got to fix it.
14:06
Vegoe
Yes, the players, it's on us.
14:07
Vegoe
We got to block shots.
14:09
Vegoe
We got to be in the right spots.
14:10
Vegoe
We got to be clear with our transitions and trades and positioning.
14:15
Vegoe
And it's just too many mistakes.
14:18
Vegoe
I think it's been a real weakness of this team so far.
14:22
Vegoe
And it's a surprising one for me.
14:24
Vegoe
You know, they do have some defenders who have some defending acumen.
14:29
Vegoe
They have some forwards who have killed some penalties before.
14:33
Vegoe
But you know, this is a good coaching staff.
14:35
Vegoe
You think they'd be able to figure this out a little bit faster than they have.
14:39
Vegoe
And then on top of that, you know, your best penalty killer sometimes has to be your goalie.
14:44
Vegoe
And I'm not saying this is all on the goaltending, but you just need a little bit more consistency there.
14:50
Vegoe
And so if this team is going to be a spoiler in the second half and maybe have a chance to be that team that could, you know, improve itself enough, goaltending and penalty killer are going to have to come through for them.
15:02
Jûpe
And Cappy, it doesn't help as they started the weekend.
15:05
Jûpe
They were also like 60th out of 63 on the power play.
15:10
Jûpe
They did improve it over Saturday night, but special teams not going good for Minnesota.
15:16
Cappy
Yeah, obviously, I think Cal Thomas over time now, if he's healthy, will help the PK.
15:23
Cappy
I think also like when you're that, you're talking numbers like that, it can get in your head after a while.
15:30
Cappy
And you know, like you're trying, you know, coach is saying this, players saying the right things, all that, but you need some luck sometimes too.
15:38
Cappy
You need the puck to go off a skate or go wide, you know, like those little things sometimes, and then you get four in a row, and then you get a whole game without a kill or, you know, you got to, you can't keep giving up two or three and, you know, your head's up and then you're still trying your best, but like it gets in your head and you're human beings.
15:56
Cappy
And when you see that happen over and over again, so it's little baby steps and obviously getting better players.
16:02
Cappy
And then power play.
16:04
Cappy
I mean, I think we were concerned about this before the season.
16:07
Cappy
You lose that quarterback on the power play.
16:10
Cappy
I think, you know, Leo Grubow was a guy that are really hoping for.
16:13
Cappy
I think he still could be, but they like, Sam Renzel was so good on the power play, rushing, getting the puck in the zone, just being that threat up top, opened up.
16:22
Cappy
And then obviously, you know, you lose guys like Stuggerud and Wood and all that.
16:27
Cappy
It's going to be different guys.
16:28
Cappy
But that quarterback is probably that spot that they need to kind of can kind of get the whole thing going on the power play.
16:38
Vegoe
I haven't been as worried about the power play in terms of how they look on the ice, you know, with the process.
16:44
Vegoe
I think they've got some pieces in place with Middlestadt and Mooney and Lamb and Ziemer.
16:50
Vegoe
I think Tanner Ludke has been a good bumper net front guy for them.
16:55
Vegoe
I just I need to see a little bit more decisiveness getting pucks to the net and then getting those second and third chances.
17:02
Vegoe
I think sometimes they've been a little hesitant to get their rotation going and it's just something you know they've got so many new faces out there it's gonna take a little bit of time but I'm not as worried about the power play as I am with the penalty kill.
17:17
Jûpe
Well the power play you know Friday night or Saturday night I did notice Veegs that they switched up Mooney.
17:23
Jûpe
They put Mooney on the right side.
17:24
Jûpe
I mean he wasn't there a hundred percent of the time but when he was out there to start a power play I noticed he was on the right side instead of a little left side you know facing the goalie and he set up Brody Lam for a very snugger root ish goal and it was real quick.
17:42
Vegoe
Yeah I asked Middlestad about that after the game and he's like it makes a lot of sense you know Moons has got the great vision to see everything you know it allows him to see the center of the ice easier and make those passes and for Lam maybe it's a little less pressure to be a playmaker and a little more of an opportunity for him to shoot the puck because I think that's when he's shown that he's been dangerous is shooting pucks getting to rebounds attacking the net.

I think when he's on his off wing it's probably easier for him to get into those plays whereas if he's on his strong side you know you're almost forcing the puck to go through him and something maybe he's not comfortable doing it's funny you bring that up because I know it's it's a you know it's a NHL thing but a guy in here in Chicago was you know they just hey the young superstar let's put him on his on his Ovechkin side and let's shoot one timers and that's gonna be it and it just was not working what they do they put him over on his offside and their power play has been unbelievable because now he's a shot pass option it's I love it I always played my off wing you just kind of and it's not really your off wing it's kind of your it's your strong side wing as if you were playing down the wing but it's your offside for the power play situation I just think it opens up a guy you know you do that little curl out to get your momentum coming back in and it just opens three different avenues and and LJ Mooney I think that's more of his sweet spot and like you said with Lam I like he's more of a doer than a thinker I think he's better when he's doing that too much thinking he gets in his own way so that's a really nice change up there and I you know these guys watch a lot of HL games they're not dumb I mean Coach Mosco and Killer are great coaches they watch a ton of hockey and that's a great adjustment Veegs by having a successful excuse me Saturday night they ended up jumping about 20 spots to number 40 yeah it's percentages are real close they're still not the greatest so things can only go up there for both sides really yeah and i think as the players get more comfortable it's going to help i think one thing on the power play we've seen Mooney taking some power play draws when he's on his strong side face-offs again for this team have been a little bit of an issue both with the penalty kill and the power play so they they still need some guys to emerge there you know Mason Moe is a guy who's looked comfortable at center even with Ludky coming back in the lineup he stayed at center maybe that's something he finds his way on the penalty kill a little bit more and they elevate his role because I think Mason Moe has made a nice impression on the staff and the fans so far Veegs I've been hearing a lot of people saying they want to see John Middlestead on that kill is he not been playing there as much because it's more about his his effort out there and that's what a lot of penalty kill is about yeah I think we talked about this last week I think John Middlestead would be a good fit you know I'm obviously not the coach and can only see it from here but you know he's an older guy he plays hard when he's in there he's not afraid to block shots he's not afraid to jump into 50-50 battles when he sees that he has a chance and he's not a reckless player you know John Middlestead's a guy who plays within himself when he's out there he's not gonna jump out of the system to try to get a scoring chance or something like that.
21:13
Jûpe
How are you on the penalty kill there Cappy?
21:17
Cappy
How am I in terms of...
21:19
Jûpe
How were you?
21:20
Cappy
As a penalty killer?
21:21
Jûpe
Yeah how were you?
21:23
Cappy
I was I think I was pretty good I did get to play I mean I I'm luckily enough to play in all situations you know I wasn't a speed guy I was I was a smart guy like being in the right spot always had my stick on the ice like I'm watching my little nephew now plays nine years old and he's a defenseman and I'm watching him skate back to the puck and he's got his hands up in his waist with his stick and I'm like you know I don't want to say anything but I'm like get your stick on the ice you know like skate with your stick on the ice have your sticks and lanes like those little things on the penalty kill it can prevent a pass from even being attempted like you put your stick in the right spot they don't make they don't even try to make that seam pass or whatever you know what I mean so I look if things aren't working right now you got to give other guys a shot if you know that what's that you know definition of insanity keep rolling the same thing out there so hopefully I mean John's got some experience right I mean that's if he's playing any special teams it's that right so right the other guy wanted to kind of talk about because I you know seen him last year Waterloo and he just made his debut this weekend was it I think Teddy Towns is gonna be a player and he's got some speed and he played in all situations for that Waterloo team that almost won the the Clark Cup last year so it'll be interesting to see how he kind of you know works his way and so I scored a goal on the weekend I did he's I think he's a guy that I don't know he's be a star player right away but I think that's a guy that maybe it will help that he wasn't around early in the season.
22:58
Jûpe
Both he and Rombach-Vegues got their first point on Townsend's goal.
23:03
Vegoe
Yeah, I think Townsend adds a little bit of speed.
23:06
Vegoe
If you look at the Gopher roster this year, there's a lot of size but there hasn't really been a lot of noticeable speed either in transition or on the forecheck.
23:16
Vegoe
So I think Teddy Townsend definitely adds an element there that they're missing and will probably give them a chance to make an impact this year.
23:24
Vegoe
And I do think Motsgo traditionally gives guys until about this time of year to sort things out and figure out, this is the spot we thought we were going to put you in, we've coached you up on it, are you still making the mistakes?
23:39
Vegoe
Okay, now it's time to make changes as we head into winter break.
23:42
Cappy
Yeah, but I don't think he's ever had a record like this.
23:45
Cappy
No, so I mean, everything's getting involved now, recruiting, everything, you know, well, Bob's got everyone, everyone is adjusting literally on the fly.
23:55
Cappy
And I think that's something that, you know, you live and learn from changes.
24:00
Jûpe
Veegs, so speaking of size and kind of speaking of your pride on ice behind you there, it's going to be a whiteout this Friday night.
24:07
Jûpe
And if anyone saw the video showing that your little pride on ice towel there between Rombach and LJ.
24:16
Jûpe
Mooney today, there's a good, it's a foot difference between those two.
24:23
Vegoe
Yeah, at the summer showcase, we definitely saw the difference when I'm looking way up at one and a little bit down at the other one.
24:29
Vegoe
So, yeah, the towels will be out on Friday night, one in every seat.
24:34
Vegoe
I know that some of them might be autographed.
24:36
Vegoe
So keep your eye out if you're going to the game.
24:38
Jûpe
Very cool.
24:42
Jûpe
When I got LJ.
24:44
Jûpe
Mooney's video a couple weeks ago right before he started, I think he saw me tilt the camera down and I'm like, oh, don't look for that.
24:52
Cappy
I think he's a pretty self-work.
24:53
Cappy
He knows that.
24:54
Cappy
I think he uses it as a, you know, it's something like per se in what you did, but like he's probably dealt with in his life throughout.
25:02
Jûpe
Oh, yeah.
25:03
Jûpe
And he's got a great personality, Veegs.
25:05
Jûpe
He's he's very fun to talk to.
25:10
Vegoe
Yeah.
25:10
Vegoe
And except if you were on the LIU bench at the end of the game on Saturday, Mooney Jurupeldy there in front of the Sharks and it was letting them hear it that they were getting the split that night.
25:22
Cappy
So he's got to be careful with that because yeah, exactly.
25:26
Jûpe
Well, you just said the last part of that sentence.
25:30
Cappy
You can't be talking that kind of that way after a split at home against a three year program.
25:36
Vegoe
Sorry, probably not.
25:37
Vegoe
If it's against Gamma, Kenna at the end of this weekend, maybe it's a little bit different story.
25:42
Cappy
Yeah, maybe.
25:42
Jûpe
Yeah.
25:44
Cappy
Well, I think it was top five team in the country.
25:46
Cappy
Yes.
25:47
Jûpe
I think Lutke ended up getting a penalty similar to that on Friday night bigs for basically dropping a couple of swear words at the ref and got himself 10 minute misconduct.
26:01
Jûpe
And he would have gotten also a two minute minor there.
26:05
Jûpe
So it should have been a two man advantage for LIU, but old Bruggemann admitted he just forgot.
26:16
Vegoe
A tough series.
26:17
Vegoe
A lot of a lot of penalties.
26:19
Vegoe
I was listening to Wally a little bit on the radio, and he's like, these guys loved to call penalties.
26:23
Vegoe
And I wanted to go right away to our GPL page where we've got all the stats on the officials as they've called penalties and Gopher series over the years.
26:32
Vegoe
And I don't think Bruggemann's that out of line with what he calls.
26:35
Vegoe
It's just it was a tight weekend this weekend.
26:38
Vegoe
And Friday was a tough one for Minnesota.
26:41
Vegoe
And then on Saturday it worked out.
26:42
Jûpe
So tell me the positives from that Saturday when Veegs.
26:47
Vegoe
I think the fact that they followed through on what the coaching staff wanted them to do.
26:52
Vegoe
Amatsuko said, you know, you give up six goals.
26:54
Vegoe
All we were talking about was our play in the offensive zone, creating traffic, getting in front of the goalie, taking away his eyes.
27:01
Vegoe
Because if you saw on Friday night, Minnesota had chances.
27:04
Jûpe
Oh, yes.
27:05
Vegoe
You know, they had chances, but the goalie saw everything.
27:08
Vegoe
You know, everything was, you know, right in front of them.
27:10
Vegoe
And so he could make saves on it.
27:12
Vegoe
Some of them were lucky with the reverse paddle on lamb early, but other ones were great saves.
27:18
Vegoe
And so if you put a little traffic in front of a goalie, his job gets a lot harder.
27:22
Vegoe
And so seeing Minnesota do that and execute that game plan and get a lot of goals around the net from a lot of different people had to be encouraging to see.
27:33
Jûpe
Yeah, but we're just looking for some kind of consistency.
27:35
Jûpe
This up and down stuff is just not going to fly.
27:39
Cappy
Yeah, I mean, well, they had a really nice weekend before that, right?
27:42
Cappy
So you're thinking, hey, OK, let's go.
27:44
Cappy
But that's where that's where you get maybe the inexperience of, you know, some young guys that, OK, we just swept Notre Dame at home.
27:52
Cappy
Clearly, this team is not going to be as good as Notre Dame.
27:55
Cappy
So and it's and it can be just this much of us take a little off the pedal.
28:01
Cappy
And then you like you said, a goaltender makes some saves.
28:04
Cappy
You get a fluke goal at the other end and bang, you know, the vibes can change that fast.
28:08
Cappy
So this is maybe that's a really good learning game that you didn't want, obviously, but maybe you needed a little just to like remind these young guys that you can never take your foot off the pedal against any team.
28:21
Cappy
Yeah, you might not have your best game that night, but you're going to bring your intensity and your effort every night.
28:28
Cappy
And you can never let that down in college hockey now, because, I mean, you're seeing it all over.
28:32
Cappy
Denver lost to Lyndenwood.
28:34
Cappy
Ohio State lost to Sacred Heart.
28:36
Cappy
I mean, anybody can beat anybody on any given night in college hockey now, like how Beegs talks about how deep the pool is.
28:43
Cappy
And I mean, honestly, there could be another six or eight Division I teams easily right now.
28:49
Cappy
Minimum.
28:51
Cappy
Especially now that the pool is wide open, the European players.
28:54
Cappy
Well, obviously that, yes.
28:56
Cappy
But just in terms of players and how hard it is now to get into college hockey and get a Division I scholarship.
29:04
Jûpe
All right, well, it's time to move on, Beegs.
29:06
Jûpe
And that means we need to talk about one of our sponsors here, Gateway Fiber.
29:12
Jûpe
They have the north side.
29:13
Jûpe
I'll cover, don't they?
29:15
Vegoe
That's right.
29:15
Vegoe
We're the state of hockey and a bad air net connections, like a bad line change, slows everything down, causes chaos, might even lose you the game.
29:23
Vegoe
Gateway Fiber is here, keep your air net skating at full speed.
29:26
Vegoe
They've been taking on big cable for years, have come to Minnesota offering faster speeds, better reliability, and customer service that doesn't sit in the palmy box.
29:35
Vegoe
Gateway Fiber isn't just another provider.
29:37
Vegoe
They're on your team.
29:38
Vegoe
Visit gatewayfiber.com or call 888-201-4339 to see if Gateway Fiber is available in your area, because life's too short for bad air net.
29:51
Vegoe
All right.
29:51
Jûpe
And of course, we thank Gateway Fiber for sponsoring The GPL Podcast.
29:57
Jûpe
Top 20 this week, Veegs.
29:59
Jûpe
You're starting to get a little more consistency at the top.
30:03
Vegoe
Well, I think one of the things in college hockey, as Cappy was just saying, is that so many teams are dropping games.
30:10
Vegoe
You know, it's really hard to see who's separating right now in the top 20.
30:14
Vegoe
I've got the West at the top of my poll.
30:17
Vegoe
Maybe it's my Western bias, but I've just seen the Western teams have the bigger wins, have less games that they're dropping.
30:25
Vegoe
Whereas on the East Coast, you're just seeing so many teams that lose games, you don't expect them to lose.
30:32
Vegoe
It's just hard to really figure out which one of them is going to elevate into even the top five right now at this point.
30:39
Vegoe
But Michigan State looks really, really strong.
30:42
Vegoe
They played Penn State really hard this last weekend.
30:44
Vegoe
You know, Denver's recovered after some early losses.
30:48
Vegoe
And I think we've been surprised with North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth this year, how well they played.
30:55
Vegoe
You know, Minnesota Duluth lost one game this last weekend, but they still have a very strong record.
31:01
Jûpe
You know, those North Dakota fans are probably thinking Minnesota is really dragging us down right now.
31:11
Jûpe
They lost live one at home to Minnesota.
31:14
Cappy
Well, hey, I mean, look, North Dakota's had a couple of rough years and not that far distant, you know, ago, but I'm a little surprised with Michigan dropping from 6-2 to 6 after winning at Penn State 7-1 and then losing 4-2.
31:31
Cappy
That's a precipitous drop playing a top five team on the road.
31:36
Cappy
You know, just looking at what you have, I mean, you have some teams in that I have in at the bottom, like, look, I'm going to go homer here with Ohio State.
31:47
Cappy
I don't know how they're not in the rankings right now.
31:51
Cappy
But, you know, whatever, Dartmouth 6-0, you got to give them, I haven't seen them play with their 6-0.
31:57
Cappy
BU is just, it's wild.
31:59
Cappy
I barely have them in.
32:00
Cappy
I think I had them at 18.
32:01
Cappy
I mean, the one East team that I have higher is Quinnipiac.
32:05
Cappy
I have it at about 6, I think, or 5.
32:08
Cappy
I mean, they just demolished BU the other night, 6-2.
32:11
Vegoe
But then they dropped the game to Yale the week before, so it's like, it's hard.
32:16
Cappy
But look, I mean, you got Denver at 2.
32:18
Cappy
They lost to Lindenwood.
32:19
Cappy
I mean, you know, it's wild.
32:23
Cappy
They just a little more consistent.
32:25
Cappy
But, I mean, I don't know why you haven't seen all these teams play a ton of games.
32:29
Cappy
UConn is a tough team.
32:31
Cappy
You know, yeah, Duluth, I think I have, I think I still have Duluth at, like, four.
32:36
Cappy
I just, they're just consistent on offense.
32:39
Cappy
They're just scoring goals.
32:41
Cappy
And Gion and Ned is, talk about a guy that has been able to delete his freshman year and now as a sophomore has been really, really good.
32:51
Jûpe
The Veegs, we do need to keep, oh, I was just going to say you need to keep an eye on Dartmouth because they are 6-0 and they're number one in the NPI right now.
32:59
Jûpe
NPI is still coming together, yes, but it is making more sense each week you've been saying.
33:06
Vegoe
I feel like we're starting to get some information out of it that that aligns a little bit.
33:11
Vegoe
You know, the ECAC teams need to play more games.
33:16
Vegoe
You know, they need to get 10, 12 games before things start to make sense there.
33:20
Vegoe
You know, we've got one more stretch of non-conference games coming up, but it certainly looks like the Big Ten is going to be having a huge advantage going into the NCAAs, you know, NCHC is the second conference in terms of that ranking and then Hockey East.
33:36
Vegoe
So I think that's one of the things you can usually get from MPI and pairwise is like your conferences are going to have teams up there.
33:44
Vegoe
I definitely think we're getting a top eight that's starting to separate itself from the rest of the college hockey, but then nine to like 16 are teams that you feel like should be there but you don't know where they are or if one of them should maybe get in the top eight and then after that there's just a cycle of about eight or nine teams that are all kind of that 16 to 25 right now and it's really hard to identify who out of that group is going to be competing for a bit at the end of the year.
34:17
Jûpe
Tech Omaha Minnesota State you've had Tech and Minnesota State in the top 20 this year VEG, so they've made a return appearance.
34:24
Cappy
Omaha's been up and down right?
34:26
Vegoe
Yeah, they've got a great goalie and they're just hard to beat because of that.
34:33
Cappy
Yeah, I've had Union in, I mean their record's really good.
34:37
Cappy
I saw Bushi had RIT in at 16, I'm like where did this come from?
34:41
Cappy
And I looked and they're nine and two and I mean you got to give them a little credit for that.
34:45
Cappy
I don't know if they've beaten anybody but still nine and two is nine and two.
34:49
Cappy
I'm sure he did that just as a little bit of a, hey, little, I mean kudos to them because I mean they lost their coach, I mean they lost all their good players from a couple years ago and to be nine and two, that's pretty impressive.
35:02
Cappy
So I'm not hating on that and it's still so early.
35:06
Cappy
Maine's kind of been up and down.
35:07
Cappy
I think everybody thought Maine was going to be top five team.
35:10
Cappy
BC's been, I had them out, now they're back in.
35:15
Cappy
You know, they had a rough four games or whatever that was.
35:19
Cappy
So and like you said, there's so many teams that you're like, OK, if you go on a little street down, we'll find somebody to take your spot.
35:29
Vegoe
Yeah, this is one of those years in college hockey where the fine line between winning and losing has never been smaller, I think, across.
35:37
Vegoe
Like there are 50 good teams in college hockey right now, I think, maybe even more.
35:42
Vegoe
You know, it's just so easy to fill out your roster with guys from CHL or, you know, deferred juniors.
35:48
Vegoe
It's never been harder to be an American wanting to play D1 hockey, that's for sure.
35:54
Jûpe
Yeah.
35:55
Jûpe
Cappy, what is going on with the women's, maybe men's arena at Ohio State?
36:03
Jûpe
We haven't had an update on that in forever.
36:06
Cappy
God, I mean, you just wanted to make me mad tonight, huh?
36:11
Cappy
No, honestly, I mean, I think there's hope now in terms of because, you know, quite frankly, the new Athletic Director, Ross Bjork, we had actually had an alumni Zoom with him late last spring or so.
36:27
Jûpe
OK.
36:27
Cappy
And I think there's a plan.
36:30
Cappy
There's the spot is there.
36:33
Cappy
I think they just I think they want to announce it so that they can start making it more easily to raise money, which I just look, I don't know the books at Ohio State.
36:43
Cappy
All I know is they got a lot of money.
36:48
Cappy
So I say it's going to happen.
36:50
Cappy
I think now I feel a little more confident it's going to happen because he was really pissed off.
36:56
Cappy
Like he didn't he came from Texas A&M.
36:58
Cappy
He didn't know anything really about hockey.
37:00
Vegoe
Right.
37:00
Cappy
In terms of what happens in the playoffs, he was not happy that they had to go play down a nationwide arena in the first round of the playoffs last year against Wisconsin.
37:10
Cappy
And that was just something brand new to him.
37:13
Vegoe
Right.
37:13
Cappy
He had no idea that was something that would happen at his university.
37:16
Cappy
So he's definitely wants it to happen.
37:19
Cappy
I think the president is a huge hockey guy.
37:22
Cappy
I think that helps it.
37:24
Cappy
So he obviously if they need a nudge, he would be a guy that would be willing to do that.
37:29
Cappy
So I wish I had a better update.
37:32
Cappy
But I think it's the most confident I think that's going to happen.
37:35
Cappy
I just don't know when.
37:37
Cappy
And that just really sucks.
37:38
Jûpe
Someone sent him over to the women's arena to watch a game.
37:41
Jûpe
Just send him over there.
37:43
Cappy
The president has been there like three times to drop the puck.
37:46
Cappy
He loves hockey, wears his bomber jacket.
37:49
Cappy
I mean he knows.
37:50
Cappy
I mean I'm sure Ross has been there now.
37:52
Cappy
He's seen the program, which they're number three now, which I don't really understand.
37:56
Cappy
They have one loss.
37:57
Cappy
Minnesota has two.
37:58
Cappy
I guess because they beat Wisconsin.
37:59
Cappy
Whatever.
38:00
Cappy
But I mean they've been in the financial.
38:02
Jûpe
Okay, you got to remember Wisconsin hadn't lost in like a year.
38:06
Jûpe
So that's probably, that's probably.
38:08
Cappy
Their last losses were to Ohio.
38:09
Jûpe
It was that home.
38:10
Cappy
They lost the Nattie Championship last year.
38:12
Cappy
I'm still fired up about that.
38:14
Cappy
I don't tweet often.
38:16
Cappy
I tweeted that day anyway.
38:18
Cappy
But no, I mean they earned it.
38:20
Cappy
I mean they earned it.
38:21
Jûpe
That was crazy.
38:22
Cappy
Yes, it was.
38:23
Cappy
But they earned, that program has earned something better.
38:27
Cappy
You cannot be that good and be playing in a old ratty barn that they're playing in.
38:33
Jûpe
Vegs, you and I agree 1000 percent.
38:36
Jûpe
We just hopefully they build something, kind of the new popular thing.
38:41
Jûpe
Four to six thousand, probably closer to five or six.
38:44
Cappy
From what I, they just talked, sorry to interrupt, but it's like a Notre Dame type rank.
38:50
Jûpe
Perfect.
38:50
Cappy
4,500 with a, but with the concourse above that you could probably fit another six or seven hundred people in the standing room.
38:58
Cappy
The suites above it on both sides.
39:00
Cappy
Notre Dame would be the perfect kind of template.
39:04
Jûpe
And Veegs, that's nothing but positivity for College Hockey and BigTen Hockey.
39:09
Vegoe
Well, it's great.
39:10
Vegoe
It looks better on TV to have buildings like that where you have fans there.
39:14
Vegoe
I think anytime you could have like the club bar type atmosphere for luxury premium seating, that's a benefit for a program.
39:23
Vegoe
It helps fund raise it.
39:24
Vegoe
It helps keep the donors happy.
39:26
Vegoe
And those seats are often usually sold because it's easy to sell premium typically.
39:32
Vegoe
But it'd be good for College Hockey.
39:35
Vegoe
I know that they have the plans already done based on the regents documents I've been able to see from Ohio State or the trustees.
39:42
Vegoe
They have some of that stuff out there.
39:44
Vegoe
They just are there.
39:46
Jûpe
Yeah.
39:48
Vegoe
It's just a crazy time in college athletics.
39:50
Cappy
Where's all that money going?
39:52
Vegoe
It's going to football and basketball and football is pretty good.
39:55
Vegoe
Revenue share and yeah.
39:57
Vegoe
Well, Veegs, they have some debt to pay off.
39:59
Jûpe
Veegs, we did get an interesting message on GPL message board today, talking about the word is out there.
40:05
Jûpe
Michigan State, Penn State, they're spending like a million or two million a piece on hockey players.
40:10
Jûpe
And my basic response is, we know nothing.
40:16
Jûpe
What we're really going off of is most likely parents putting dollar figures out there.
40:22
Jûpe
And to the lesser point, you know, agents as well.
40:25
Jûpe
There is nothing to confirm any kind of money at any school when it comes to hockey right now.
40:32
Vegoe
Yeah, all the numbers are just kind of smoke out there.
40:35
Vegoe
The best thing that we'll see at the end of this fiscal year is when schools have to report to the NCAA, you know, they're going to have to say how much revenue share they gave to each program.
40:46
Vegoe
And so we still won't know who is actually getting the money, but you'll get a pretty good idea.
40:51
Vegoe
You know, if there's a hockey program out there, there was a seven-digit expense for revenue share.
40:58
Vegoe
It's going to show you they're spending a lot of money.
41:00
Vegoe
But I just don't think that those big dollars are out there for hockey.
41:05
Jûpe
And you've been hearing something similar, haven't you, Cappy?
41:08
Cappy
Yeah, I mean, I have been hearing a few numbers.
41:11
Cappy
And from relatively decent sources, I'm not going to, you know.
41:15
Jûpe
Yeah, no.
41:16
Cappy
Obviously, some guys got some money.
41:18
Cappy
There's a couple, there's two guys, that's pretty obvious.
41:21
Cappy
We know one shoe fell and then the other one fell between the two schools.
41:27
Cappy
And the numbers, you know, it's in a ballpark of money we've never heard of before in college hockey for one player or two players.
41:36
Cappy
So, that's just, you know, great for them, great for the sport, I guess.
41:42
Cappy
Everyone's going to have to figure it out.
41:44
Cappy
Do they have the money to do it?
41:46
Cappy
I mean, I know Ohio State right now does not have a lot of money, if at any, for hockey players to pay them to come to Ohio State.
41:55
Cappy
I, you know, and that's just, that's just a fact.
41:59
Cappy
I don't know if they'll get, there's 36 Division I sports at Ohio State.
42:03
Cappy
It's the, they have the most of any, any school.
42:06
Cappy
How is that get split up when you have the monster of football and then everyone else?
42:11
Cappy
So Minnesota is going to probably have, you know, an interesting debate because Minnesota is the one program there that brings in the money.
42:20
Cappy
They're the one team that brings in revenue every year, pretty much.
42:25
Cappy
I mean, don't they?
42:27
Jûpe
I mean, yes, but it's not included in any of that as it begs.
42:34
Vegoe
Well, in terms of like the NIL money and stuff, is that what you're saying?
42:37
Vegoe
It's not included because I'm saying Minnesota makes Minnesota makes money on men's hockey.
42:42
Vegoe
Like they're a positive revenue team with the amount of tickets they sell, with the amount of contributions that are coming into the university for men's hockey.
42:52
Vegoe
There is an opportunity there.
42:54
Vegoe
And so like when Jimmy Snugger decided to come back, there was money there for him to get, you know, to not NHL money, but it was money to, you know, help him, you know, have one more year on campus and get a little something in between.
43:08
Vegoe
And I think that is kind of the model that if Minnesota is going to pay players, that's the situation they want to do it.
43:16
Vegoe
They don't want to spend it on somebody who's 17 or 18 coming and probably one and done.
43:22
Vegoe
You know, that's probably just not a very good use of those resources that are limited.
43:26
Vegoe
You know, the better resources is to use the revenue share to pay more full ride scholarships.
43:32
Vegoe
And I think that's something we've talked about with Nick Angel and the Golden Helmet Collective.
43:37
Vegoe
You know, that's something that they could see happening is where all those scholarships are fully funded at a starting point because then that money isn't taxed and the players don't have any debt from school.
43:47
Vegoe
So there are options there.
43:50
Cappy
And I mean, I think, and they started it, they were one of the first ones to have the, you know, players can get paid for name, image, and likeness.
43:57
Cappy
Jersey sales is up.
43:58
Cappy
Minnesota is the one of the schools, very few besides North Dakota, that players, I mean, snugger jerseys will, I mean, you're going to make thousands and hundreds of thousands of dollars?
44:08
Cappy
No, but some of these guys, most college hockey guys are pretty happy to get a nice little extra chunk.
44:14
Jûpe
But they're not doing that.
44:15
Jûpe
They're not doing that.
44:16
Jûpe
I thought they were doing that.
44:18
Jûpe
You're not seeing jerseys with names on it.
44:22
Vegoe
Well, you're seeing the screen printed jerseys, like the more value ones.
44:27
Vegoe
Well, it's a little bit different.
44:29
Vegoe
It's a little bit higher quality.
44:30
Vegoe
It's like the sublime or whatever.
44:34
Cappy
What is it that they're doing at the school, what they can are the last couple of years?
44:38
Cappy
What do they call that?
44:40
Jûpe
Dinkytown?
44:41
Cappy
Yeah, Dinkytown.
44:43
Cappy
Did that kind of just fall off or?
44:45
Jûpe
No, it's there.
44:47
Cappy
Because they were the first ones to kind of create that, of any school, weren't they?
44:52
Vegoe
Yeah, I mean, they were on board with some of the original print-on-demand player name image likeness type stuff.
45:00
Vegoe
I don't think it's been as big of an emphasis lately since, you know, Renzel Moore, Chesley, Curth all left early, you know.
45:12
Vegoe
I think there was probably some funding there if those guys wanted to come back, but I don't think it was even a discussion point for them.
45:22
Cappy
Yeah.
45:25
Jûpe
It's still a wait-and-see thing, really, it is, Cappy.
45:28
Cappy
Sure.
45:28
Cappy
And I think the other thing, though, that may is important is like, okay, where are they going to recruit now, though?
45:35
Cappy
It's not all about money.
45:36
Cappy
Not all these guys got money.
45:38
Cappy
They are coming now with opportunity to go play at a university, and the CHL players, it's got to be an option.
45:46
Cappy
It's got to be something that they make.
45:49
Cappy
I don't want to say priority, but you don't want to miss the boat when there's a whole new plethora of players.
45:54
Cappy
I compared it to football.
45:57
Cappy
Say in football, college football, Florida was not available to college football, and they had their own league because they're so good down there.
46:05
Cappy
Then all of a sudden, the next one year, they finally agreed to join college football and become part of the pool of players.
46:13
Cappy
That is, you can compare to Canada all of a sudden becoming a wide range of players available now to all the universities in college hockey.
46:23
Cappy
And I think that's, you cannot sit around and let everyone else get all those players.
46:28
Cappy
And you kind of sit back and kind of, you know, you can keep your recruiting this way.
46:34
Cappy
But if the results don't catch up this year, and they struggle again, people are going to start wondering why aren't you going after this new pool of players.
46:44
Jûpe
Ed Veegs, that's kind of where a lot of fans have been going after during this struggling start.
46:51
Jûpe
They're like, why don't we have any CHL players?
46:53
Jûpe
Why don't we have a full roster?
46:55
Jûpe
These are legit questions that we'll see at the end of the season.
47:03
Vegoe
Yeah, one of the Golden Gopher fun events was this weekend where fans got to go ask questions of Bob Motzko before the game on Friday, I think.
47:13
Vegoe
And fans were asking questions about these things.
47:15
Vegoe
And, you know, Bob had to, you know, say his speech.
47:20
Vegoe
And, you know, he didn't want to dip into the CHL.
47:24
Vegoe
He wanted to stick with the guys he recruited that he liked.
47:27
Vegoe
And they're going through the growing pains.
47:29
Vegoe
But this is the path that he wants to go through.
47:31
Vegoe
He's confident that they're going to come out on the other side in better shape than they would if they would have gone into the CHL this year.
47:40
Vegoe
Because I do think, you know, you look at the CHL players, you know, are they going to stick around for two, three years?
47:47
Vegoe
You know, how many of these guys are going to fit in college?
47:50
Vegoe
You know, that's something you got to know before you start building a roster with them.
47:54
Vegoe
And, you know, as good as Michigan State looks, if a lot of those guys leave after this year and go play in the HL next year, that's going to be tough for Michigan State going forward.
48:07
Jûpe
But if they win a national championship on the way, they're all worth it.
48:12
Jûpe
That's just it.
48:13
Cappy
You know, because they're just building credibility right now.
48:17
Cappy
And so I think the next guy will see, oh, Porter Mottone just did that.
48:21
Cappy
So who's the next guy that's just got drafted in, but he's not ready.
48:25
Cappy
He's that eighth pick in the draft, but he's not quite ready for the NHL.
48:29
Cappy
So I'm going to go play a year of College Hockey.
48:31
Cappy
It's not going to be a perfect science every time, but it kind of builds a template of, okay, I can do it this way.
48:39
Cappy
And then, you know, look, it's not, I'm not saying Bob should have done this or that.
48:45
Cappy
Nobody knows for sure how it should have gone.
48:47
Cappy
But you did have that one roster spot at the bottom there.
48:51
Cappy
Look, I'm not going to knock a kid, give an opportunity, because, you know, he wasn't a Division I hockey player.
48:57
Cappy
You had a spot there.
48:58
Cappy
Maybe you could have gone somewhere in the CHL, the Q, Western League, and found a guy that maybe was a little more talented.
49:06
Cappy
No knock on any player, but that's a spot where you had a kind of little chip to play with, and they decided not to go that route.
49:14
Vegoe
Well, I think the big reason they saved the spot was Nathan Aery had his injury issues when he came to campus.
49:21
Cappy
That's another one of the roster things, a whole other crap.
49:24
Vegoe
Right, and I think that made it more complicated for Minnesota, because you don't want to go to a season where you have Luca coming in as your transfer goalie.
49:33
Vegoe
You have a good feel for him, but you don't really know, and then you have a goalie who's got a little injury history, and then you've got a third goalie who's more of a practice goalie, not someone you want to have starting a lot of games.
49:46
Vegoe
You know, it worked out with Justin Close, but I don't know if Leighton is going to strike twice in that situation, and you probably don't want to do that if you're Minnesota.
49:54
Vegoe
So I think that's a big reason why they kept that extra spot.
49:58
Cappy
It was a tough call, and I don't agree with this 26 roster.
50:04
Cappy
I think it'll change, just like everything.
50:07
Cappy
They splash a number out there, and then you work off of it.
50:10
Cappy
So hopefully it gets, at least gets some kind of leeway on it.
50:18
Vegoe
Well, I think we're going to see teams here over break running out lineups that are short.
50:22
Vegoe
You know, as guys get hurt, as guys leave for the Davos-Switzerland deal, as guys leave for World Junior, I think we're going to see some teams playing short.
50:35
Jûpe
Veegs, what does it mean that Carter Casey signed his letter of intent this couple days ago?
50:41
Jûpe
Does that mean he has a year?
50:44
Jûpe
He may come in next year.
50:45
Jûpe
What does that really mean?
50:48
Vegoe
It's interesting.
50:48
Vegoe
Minnesota is starting to sign guys maybe a year early.
50:52
Vegoe
Like as we saw with Kwasnicka and Macio Phillips, you know, they signed, but they went and played another year.
50:59
Vegoe
Never signed early, went back, played another year juniors.
51:03
Vegoe
They've been doing this quite a bit.
51:05
Vegoe
Typically, when you sign this agreement, you're admitting that we have a spot for you next year.
51:12
Vegoe
And if they choose not to give you that spot next year, you're supposed to be back on the market and you can sign with anybody.
51:20
Cappy
He's on the market now.
51:21
Cappy
Let's be honest.
51:22
Cappy
You sign your national.
51:23
Cappy
It doesn't mean I mean, it's it's saying you're committing.
51:27
Cappy
But if something goes wild or something, you know, he could easily be going somewhere else next year.
51:33
Cappy
Right.
51:34
Cappy
But it's a while.
51:36
Jûpe
But technically, we is a senior, so they will have a third spot leagues on the roster for him if he wants to come in early.
51:48
Vegoe
Yeah, especially goalie.
51:49
Vegoe
You probably don't want to be the third goalie if you're a talent like that.
51:52
Vegoe
You know, I've seen scouting reports that say Casey could be, you know, a top 50 draft pick, you know, because of his size and ability and the way he's looked at medicine hat.
52:02
Vegoe
But but the other thing is that when you sign that other teams aren't supposed to be able to recruit you anymore.
52:09
Vegoe
So if you are going to flip, it's going to be because you want to and you have your advisor out there talking to school saying, if I were to decommit and get out of my agreement, would you have a spot for me?
52:18
Vegoe
That's how it happens.
52:20
Vegoe
Sure.
52:20
Cappy
But then that's it's so easily now manipulated without the kid being involved.
52:25
Cappy
He says, hey, I want to do this or that.
52:28
Cappy
The agent just does it.
52:29
Cappy
And then this not on the kid.
52:32
Cappy
I will tell you, man, I was super impressed them last year doing that.
52:36
Cappy
USHL, the finals.
52:38
Cappy
I mean, he came from high school, wasn't supposed to play.
52:41
Cappy
Their guy gets hurt.
52:42
Cappy
He goes in and he was awesome.
52:45
Cappy
And you're waiting for like maybe a hiccup.
52:47
Cappy
And he had maybe a rough period.
52:49
Cappy
I'm trying to remember one of the periods.
52:50
Cappy
It was the first home game for Muskegon.
52:52
Cappy
So they were coming out Fast and Furious.
52:54
Cappy
And he settled in like a season pro as a 17 year old.
52:59
Cappy
And I just was like, and he's a Minnesota kid.
53:01
Cappy
I'm like, Gophers need to be on this guy.
53:03
Cappy
And I, and Steve Miller texted me during, he's like, hey, are you doing the broadcast?
53:08
Cappy
I'm like, he's like, yeah.
53:09
Cappy
He's like, oh yeah, we know we got Teddy.
53:11
Cappy
And I'm like, are you watching that goalie too?
53:14
Cappy
I didn't say that, but I'm like, he's got to be watching it.
53:17
Cappy
This kid is super impressive.
53:18
Cappy
He's a Minnesota kid.
53:21
Cappy
There hasn't been a lot of that happening, right?
53:23
Cappy
With the Gophers lately.
53:24
Cappy
I'm like, they got to lock this kid down.
53:26
Cappy
He is, he looks really good.
53:28
Cappy
And from what you've said, he's having another, you know, full year now in junior and he's doing well.
53:34
Cappy
You know, if things go a little crooked this year completely, I would not be surprised if he's on the team next year.
53:43
Vegoe
Right.
53:43
Cappy
I mean, both goalies are juniors, right?
53:45
Jûpe
Correct.
53:47
Vegoe
I mean, you want goalies to play.
53:48
Vegoe
So if you're going to get them, that means he's getting a fair chance.
53:53
Cappy
Well, that's mean you might be having conversations with one of those other guys saying, hey, we're bringing in this guy.
53:59
Cappy
You're one of three if you want it or you can go in.
54:03
Cappy
You know, that's the business now, right?
54:06
Cappy
This is the NH, this is pro hockey.
54:08
Cappy
You can essentially it is I'm out.
54:10
Cappy
I'm going to wherever.
54:12
Cappy
So but I was really impressed with him last year.
54:16
Cappy
That's a good recruit to get.
54:19
Jûpe
All right.
54:20
Jûpe
We need to get to Penn State here.
54:21
Jûpe
And obviously, Mr.
54:24
Jûpe
NIL himself, Gavin McKenna coming in.
54:26
Jûpe
But first, Veegs, have you been shopping at Cub yet for Thanksgiving?
54:32
Vegoe
I've started to put together a menu.
54:34
Vegoe
I've been browsing some of the items at Cub.
54:38
Vegoe
I'm down there, because it's fall.
54:40
Vegoe
We're still doing the apples.
54:41
Vegoe
We're still doing the caramel dip.
54:43
Vegoe
But we're starting to get in a little more pumpkin stuff as we get ready for Thanksgiving.
54:47
Vegoe
And Cub's are one stop shop for everything fall, whether you're baking, hosting, game day, Thanksgiving, cozy night in.
54:54
Vegoe
Cub has the flavors that make fall feel like fall.
54:57
Vegoe
So swing by your local Cub.
54:59
Vegoe
Stock up on all your seasonal favorites, because nothing says fall in Minnesota like comfort food from Cub.
55:05
Vegoe
Shop happy.
55:08
Jûpe
All right, Veegs, I expect we're going to have a full menu next week from your purchases at Cub for Thanksgiving with Ganger next weekend.
55:19
Jûpe
You got some, Cappy?
55:20
Cappy
I got to say, I don't know if this has ever happened on your podcast, but if my iPad runs out of battery, I'm switching to my phone here quick.
55:28
Cappy
So I have it ready just for you if we got to switch me out and put me on my iPhone.
55:34
Jûpe
You could just plug it in.
55:37
Cappy
I'm in the middle of the room and even my 10-foot one is too far away.
55:43
Cappy
So if that happens, I'm at 4 percent.
55:46
Jûpe
Such a rookie mistake.
55:47
Cappy
I got low power mode on me.
55:48
Jûpe
He's been on the show like 50 million times.
55:51
Cappy
I had this thing at 100 percent.
55:53
Cappy
I don't know where it went.
55:54
Cappy
The juice is gone.
55:57
Jûpe
He was freezing up a little bit, Veegs.
55:58
Cappy
I'm a little worried.
55:59
Cappy
See, that's what's happening.
56:01
Vegoe
Big TV star, Cappy.
56:05
Cappy
Are you kidding?
56:06
Cappy
I've been on once in October.
56:07
Cappy
I mean, I'm waiting, waiting very restlessly to get back in there.
56:15
Cappy
So hopefully, I'm going to fall off here at some point.
56:19
Cappy
I'm ready.
56:20
Cappy
I got the phone ready.
56:21
Vegoe
And then you're going to be the Pat McAuletty.
56:23
Vegoe
You're going to be back on the phone and you're going to be holding at interesting angles.
56:29
Jûpe
By the way, Pat McAuletty back this weekend, Veegs.
56:32
Jûpe
That's exciting.
56:33
Vegoe
That's good.
56:34
Vegoe
Glad he got to Mayo and got help and is healing up.
56:38
Cappy
That's great.
56:38
Vegoe
Great news, man.
56:40
Cappy
Pat.
56:40
Cappy
Pat's a man.
56:41
Jûpe
He is.
56:43
Jûpe
He is.
56:43
Jûpe
He'll be doing, it looks like radio Friday night and TV Saturday night.
56:46
Jûpe
So good for him.
56:47
Jûpe
Great for him to be back.
56:50
Jûpe
He's already complaining about the podcast times.
56:52
Jûpe
It was too late for him tonight, Veegs.
56:54
Jûpe
Of course.
56:55
Jûpe
Of course.
56:56
Cappy
What do you try to help him?
56:57
Cappy
Nine o'clock instead of nine thirty.
56:59
Jûpe
Yeah.
57:00
Jûpe
If we can, when we have him on second half of the season, we'll try to move it up.
57:05
Jûpe
Try.
57:06
Jûpe
Right, Veegs?
57:06
Jûpe
We'll try.
57:07
Jûpe
We'll try.
57:08
Vegoe
We'll look at the schedules.
57:10
Vegoe
I'm coaching my two hockey teams.
57:12
Vegoe
You know, it's it's challenging.
57:13
Vegoe
I was on the ice tonight.
57:14
Vegoe
So that's why I was right on the bucket at nine o'clock.
57:20
Vegoe
So Cappy, national perspective of Penn State, you are you are an expert on this.
57:26
Vegoe
I know you've been watching the Nittany Lions and of course.
57:32
Cappy
Good.
57:33
Cappy
They're missing their best defenseman.
57:35
Cappy
The key guy, Kate Christensen, who came on last year was maybe their best defenseman, has been out all year.
57:43
Cappy
Big number 27, kind of just a calming guy back there, I think that would make their their decor better.
57:52
Cappy
And then look, that line, everyone thought McKenna, McKenna, McKenna.
57:56
Cappy
I'm like, did the people forgot like how that team got to the Frozen Four last year?
58:01
Cappy
Well, this is the Demarsco, Wee Bush and Toronto Lions.
58:05
Cappy
And those guys have been awesome.
58:07
Cappy
I think, it's their, this is the first time they've ever had crazy, you know, expectations.
58:17
Jûpe
Yes.
58:17
Cappy
And they're getting everybody's best shot.
58:19
Cappy
They're not the little guy anymore.
58:21
Cappy
And it is not easy.
58:22
Cappy
I think they, I think they thought they were just gonna Stonehill and like, they were just gonna go roll through those games and that did not happen.
58:31
Cappy
So I think they're, they're in a learning curve and they're also like trying to deal with this.
58:36
Cappy
Another thing that nobody's ever dealt with is you get this high, this guy, Gavin McKenna, who's larger than life, comes to the Happy Valley to play College Hockey, which is just asked seven years ago, if you would have said something like this would happen, no shot, right?
58:52
Cappy
And I just think so many expectations and then the media and all that.
58:57
Cappy
And maybe at times they're watching McKenna instead of going to play hockey.
59:01
Cappy
They're still a top five team, I think, right now.
59:06
Cappy
It's just a whirlwind of stuff.
59:08
Cappy
And I think they're I'm waiting till like January, February, especially on McKenna alone, once he goes to World Juniors and comes back.
59:16
Cappy
I just think that this team is hard to judge right now until later in the year to get kind of their full product and maybe just out of this haze of expectations for the first time ever.
59:30
Cappy
So, yeah, it's it's interesting team, they're goaltending.
59:33
Cappy
I actually like the freshmen, maybe a little better.
59:35
Cappy
Fleming has been more consistent than I think.
59:38
Cappy
Reidler's got the talent.
59:40
Cappy
You've seen it at times, but he's also let some loose ones in.
59:43
Cappy
So we'll see.
59:44
Cappy
It's interesting.
59:45
Cappy
The only one with Fleming and that I'm assuming he's going to go on to say on Friday night that the freshmen.
59:51
Cappy
So interesting, interesting team coming in.
59:55
Cappy
I don't know what to expect on Friday night, to be honest.
59:59
Jûpe
Honestly, Big, I don't know what to expect either.
1:00:03
Vegoe
Yeah, I mean, it's going to be one of those games where I think Minnesota has to find their identity that I've been suggesting they have to play this year, which is hard to play against, discipline, defensive, stay out of the box, possess the puck, string shifts together.
1:00:19
Vegoe
Like you have to play that way with I think the roster the Gophers have this year.
1:00:24
Vegoe
So I think at times they haven't shown that they understand that part of the game and they get into loose play and they get a little bit on their heels and they don't close gaps and all of a sudden you give the other team some momentum and you get hemmed in and then you're just defending, dumping, getting off.
1:00:43
Vegoe
The next line's out there defending, dumping, getting off and they don't have the players to really kind of get possession back of the game.
1:00:53
Vegoe
So, I think that's their challenge this weekend is to play the style they're going to have to play to be successful and it's going to be tricky against Penn State who is so much in your face all the time.
1:01:05
Vegoe
They are going to challenge you.
1:01:07
Vegoe
They are going to put pressure on your defense.
1:01:09
Vegoe
They're going to put two four checkers on the puck a lot.
1:01:12
Vegoe
They're going to overload sides of the ice.
1:01:15
Vegoe
They're going to try to beat you at the half wall all the time and it's going to be a high intensity game, which will be quite the challenge for Minnesota.
1:01:22
Vegoe
It's good that they have Cal Thomas back.
1:01:23
Vegoe
It's good they have Tanner Ludke back.
1:01:26
Vegoe
I think it's good that Mason Moe is developing as a center for them.
1:01:29
Vegoe
You can handle some of that physicality, but it's going to be a big test.
1:01:36
Jûpe
Veegs, I'm still waiting for Paulson to arrive.
1:01:42
Jûpe
I think a lot of fans are as well.
1:01:45
Vegoe
Yeah, I think we had high hopes with the way he and Hendrickson played in the USHL and the way he started to click just before he got hurt last year.
1:01:53
Vegoe
We just haven't seen him elevate his game yet this season.
1:02:02
Vegoe
I don't know if he's running out of time or not, but it's definitely a player that's on the brink here, I think.
1:02:09
Cappy
Got to stay out of the box.
1:02:11
Cappy
You said that penalty kill, let me ask.
1:02:13
Cappy
Cal Thomas will help and it's his second weekend, but man, that power play, the Penn State can be dangerous.
1:02:20
Cappy
With those, they put the four, they put that line out there with McKenna and then I think they had Smith out there, the other young freshman first rounder as the point man.
1:02:32
Cappy
But those guys can whip it around.
1:02:34
Cappy
So, you know, yeah, you say be aggressive, but that fine line of don't get that penalty, you know, don't finish that check too high or, you know, those little things, those details, like you said, are going to be important to be aggressive, but don't take those penalties and get yourself behind on that power play.
1:02:53
Vegoe
Well, and I think Motsko and Miller, I can hear them at practice saying position, position, position, and don't use your stick.
1:03:01
Vegoe
You know, your stick has to be on the ICB block passing lanes, but it can't be in the body.
1:03:06
Vegoe
And your positioning has to be on the right side of the players all the time.
1:03:10
Vegoe
And that's one of the things I think they've been caught on, is they're on the wrong side and then they use their stick and then they're in the box.
1:03:17
Cappy
Yeah.
1:03:20
Cappy
Predictions?
1:03:21
Jûpe
I know, but man.
1:03:23
Cappy
I heard, I saw you wincing away.
1:03:25
Cappy
That's what he's thinking.
1:03:25
Jûpe
We've been so bad this year for weeks.
1:03:28
Jûpe
I mean, really bad.
1:03:32
Jûpe
We've gotten yelled at by Deutsch a couple of times.
1:03:35
Jûpe
Oh.
1:03:39
Cappy
Do you want me to go first?
1:03:42
Jûpe
Go for it.
1:03:43
Cappy
I mean, I think it's going to be a split.
1:03:47
Cappy
I do just, Penn State's just not been consistent enough.
1:03:51
Cappy
You'll see a good game one night.
1:03:53
Cappy
I mean, I lost 7-1 and then came back win 4-2.
1:03:57
Cappy
And I think Minnesota is the same.
1:03:58
Cappy
Like Penn State has been a little more consistent, but I don't think Minnesota is going to get swept at home.
1:04:04
Cappy
I just don't see that happening.
1:04:08
Cappy
You know, some of, like I said, Cal Thomas is an anchor back there.
1:04:10
Cappy
You take a little bit off the pressure off of Luke Middlestad.
1:04:14
Cappy
And those, Ron Box, you know, was in on that.
1:04:16
Cappy
But maybe he's a little more confident.
1:04:18
Cappy
I just think they're going to, I think they're going to win one of the two and get a split.
1:04:29
Jûpe
I'm thinking only one point for Minnesota right now.
1:04:33
Cappy
And overtime loss?
1:04:36
Jûpe
Overtime, well, overtime, yes.
1:04:39
Jûpe
I just, they got to show me, Biggs, they got to show me something.
1:04:45
Jûpe
I, you know, right now, they'll get their butts kicked one night, and then they'll come back to win the next night, and it just doesn't change.
1:04:54
Jûpe
Until something changes, I'm not so positive on this team, yes.
1:04:58
Jûpe
I'm going to say one point on the weekend, Biggs.
1:05:01
Jûpe
What do you got?
1:05:03
Vegoe
I think that the big fear for me is that Penn State has their bad game on Friday night, and Minnesota somehow gives it away.
1:05:13
Vegoe
You know what I mean?
1:05:14
Vegoe
I think that's the only way Minnesota gets swept, because I do think Minnesota plays one game well on the weekend.
1:05:23
Vegoe
It's just you worry that it could come when the other team has their A game too.
1:05:27
Vegoe
So I get pretty nervous about Friday's game.
1:05:30
Vegoe
I was just looking at the odds.
1:05:32
Vegoe
Penn State's a minus 166 favorite Gophers plus 130 dog.
1:05:38
Vegoe
I think that's probably pretty accurate of what I think the Friday night game is going to look like.
1:05:45
Vegoe
I think the Gophers do get the split though.
1:05:47
Vegoe
I think they drop Friday.
1:05:48
Vegoe
I think they win Saturday.
1:05:49
Vegoe
That's been how they've looked this year.
1:05:52
Vegoe
It's going to be great hockey, I think.
1:05:54
Vegoe
I think these players are all looking forward to this matchup.
1:05:58
Vegoe
You know, I don't think the Gophers are public.
1:06:00
Vegoe
You guys say they're looking forward to playing McKenna, but I think they are.
1:06:04
Vegoe
There's going to be a lot of scouts in the building.
1:06:07
Vegoe
So it should be fun.
1:06:09
Jûpe
How about fans?
1:06:10
Jûpe
How's the tickets going?
1:06:12
Jûpe
Do we know?
1:06:13
Vegoe
I don't think tickets are great.
1:06:15
Vegoe
And that's probably the most disappointing thing is this should be a big series.
1:06:20
Jûpe
Yeah, but people are still bitter.
1:06:22
Jûpe
They're down on Penn State.
1:06:23
Jûpe
They don't care about Penn State yet.
1:06:27
Vegoe
Football is on the road.
1:06:28
Vegoe
They're at Northwestern playing at Wrigley Field.
1:06:30
Vegoe
So I can't imagine that's going to be a big draw for people.
1:06:33
Vegoe
It's not like the trip that they took out to Cal or USC where a lot of the Gopher fandom really wanted to take that trip.
1:06:40
Vegoe
Maybe some want to go see the game at Wrigley.
1:06:44
Vegoe
But I hope it's a good crowd because it should be because these are two top teams in college hockey and I'm just really looking forward to seeing if Minnesota answers the bell.
1:06:55
Vegoe
I know Moscow is worried about the team maybe being a little fatigued.
1:07:01
Vegoe
He gave them the day off on Tuesday to kind of rest their legs out of their practice today.
1:07:05
Vegoe
It was probably one of the lower key practices they've had where there's a lot of teaching going on.
1:07:12
Vegoe
So I think he's just trying to pull the reins back just a little bit so that they can go on the weekend.
1:07:17
Jûpe
Look at that smooth transition for you, Cappy.
1:07:20
Vegoe
That was quick.
1:07:20
Cappy
It's not my first rodeo, but it was my first time doing that.
1:07:25
Cappy
Did anyone even notice?
1:07:27
Jûpe
Well you kind of froze for a second while Biggs was talking.
1:07:30
Jûpe
I didn't notice.
1:07:31
Jûpe
I was looking down at Biggs and all of a sudden you popped up and I'm back.
1:07:37
Jûpe
That's the professional broadcaster there, Biggs.
1:07:40
Cappy
Yeah, that's why they gave me the mediocre bucks.
1:07:47
Cappy
So I missed just a hair of that, but I hit on McKenna a little bit.
1:07:54
Cappy
I'm a little surprised.
1:07:57
Cappy
You watched some highlights of him, right?
1:07:59
Cappy
I don't know if anyone watched a ton of a full game of him, right?
1:08:04
Cappy
I think he's 17 years old.
1:08:07
Cappy
I think he's doing a pretty good job.
1:08:09
Cappy
I think there's a lot left there.
1:08:14
Cappy
You know, I think he's got to work.
1:08:17
Cappy
He's got to be a little tougher in the trenches.
1:08:18
Cappy
And I think that's why he decided to come here as opposed to staying in the WHL and scoring 160 points.
1:08:25
Cappy
And then jumping in the NHL.
1:08:27
Cappy
I think this is exactly why.
1:08:28
Cappy
And I think it's a learning thing.
1:08:29
Cappy
He's not used to getting held scoreless in games.
1:08:33
Cappy
And he's had that a bunch of times.
1:08:36
Cappy
So I'm trying to hold off my full kind of, you know, because there's now people with A&E struggling that he's not the guaranteed number one pick in the draft, which is kind of wild.
1:08:49
Cappy
But I'm waiting to see, and I mentioned this about going to World Juniors, probably having a really good tournament and then coming back as kind of like that not a freshman anymore, you know, for that second half.
1:09:00
Cappy
And by like late January, early February, I have a kind of really good idea of what kind of player he is this year and what he does at that time of season.
1:09:09
Cappy
Before I really make a full kind of, you know, you know, don't want to make a knee jerk kind of opinion on his game at this point.
1:09:18
Jûpe
Veegs, I think this is nothing but good for McKenna.
1:09:23
Jûpe
I think it's he's playing against older players.
1:09:27
Jûpe
Yeah, they might not be those superstar young guys.
1:09:30
Jûpe
He plays against Gatles, but whatever.
1:09:32
Jûpe
I think it's good for McKenna.
1:09:33
Jûpe
I think struggling is good for McKenna because it's going to make him a much better player.
1:09:40
Vegoe
Well, I think for any player, struggling before you get to the next level is probably good for your development because you figure out what you need to work on in your game.
1:09:49
Vegoe
You know, Matthew Nyes talked about that at Tri-City.
1:09:51
Vegoe
You know, he had a terrible start in the USHL and he just grinded his way through it.
1:09:56
Vegoe
He found other ways to make impacts in the game and just look at the player that arrived on campus with Matthew Nyes.
1:10:03
Vegoe
You know, I think it's a benefit to do that.
1:10:06
Vegoe
And if McKenna can show the improvement over the season, it's only going to help his draft stock.
1:10:12
Vegoe
Because could you imagine him having another like two point of game season, the WHL getting drafted first overall and having this happen to him in the first 10 games in the NHL?
1:10:24
Cappy
Right.
1:10:24
Vegoe
Like that would be brutal.
1:10:25
Cappy
First whole season.
1:10:27
Cappy
I mean, you're going to be going to, I guess, Calgary or something like that right now, who's not a very good hockey team.
1:10:34
Cappy
And you're not going to have a ton around you.
1:10:36
Cappy
And you're supposed to go in there as a barely 18 year old and, you know, be the crown jewel.
1:10:44
Cappy
I mean, this, yeah, you guys both hit it perfectly in terms of a little struggle never hurt anybody.
1:10:52
Cappy
You find if you're going to be a real player, because you're like, okay, I need to do other things than just what, you know, skill it up all the time.
1:11:00
Cappy
And if I don't do that and I stay this way, I'm not going to get better and I'm not going to be drafted where I want to be and I'm not going to be that guy in the NHL.
1:11:11
Cappy
So you're so right.
1:11:12
Cappy
I think this is nothing but good things for him.
1:11:16
Cappy
And it'll test his character, right?
1:11:19
Cappy
Like, is he still being the same guy he was in September when it was all fun and games.
1:11:24
Cappy
It was like the hype.
1:11:26
Cappy
I'm just one of the guys.
1:11:28
Cappy
Are you still one of just the guys when you're not go three games without a point, right?
1:11:32
Cappy
And you're not just things aren't going right for you.
1:11:35
Cappy
You still that's that's that maturity thing that look, man, the kids had a, you know, the the laser on him for three years.
1:11:42
Cappy
Like, how is he responding to that?
1:11:44
Cappy
And I think that's another part that people don't talk about.
1:11:47
Cappy
They just talk about the hockey part.
1:11:48
Cappy
How about his mental and his maturity as a person?
1:11:55
Jûpe
You guys got anything else?
1:11:56
Jûpe
Are we ready for some overtime?
1:11:59
Jûpe
I mean, it's moti.
1:12:00
Jûpe
Yeah, I think you're right.
1:12:02
Jûpe
Biggs, you got any final thoughts for this weekend?
1:12:07
Vegoe
Biggest thing, if you're a fan watching this game, it's going to be fun to isolate on players like watch one player for a whole shift, watch McKenna for a whole shift, watch Mooney for a whole shift, watch Tanner Ludke for a whole shift.
1:12:20
Vegoe
If you're live and in person, that's one of the best ways to watch these players.
1:12:26
Vegoe
It's just isolate on them.
1:12:29
Jûpe
I like that.
1:12:29
Cappy
If you're a Gopher fan, come out.
1:12:31
Cappy
Look, if you're a little upset with the Gophers, you're not going to come in, you don't want to come out and see this young player.
1:12:38
Cappy
Just see what he's all about.
1:12:39
Cappy
You can watch him on TV all you want, but like Veegs said, it's like watching him, watching all his little things.
1:12:46
Cappy
I mean, this guy's supposed to be the next number one pick.
1:12:48
Cappy
Aren't you curious?
1:12:49
Cappy
Don't you want to see that in person?
1:12:52
Cappy
And how, it's not going to be that easy when it comes next year, when you maybe comes to town once.
1:12:57
Cappy
And it's going to be a lot more expensive to see it.
1:13:01
Vegoe
Yeah, look on social media, Diggytown Athletes is partnering with Aventure to sell tickets.
1:13:07
Vegoe
The revenue gets back into the Diggytown Athletes program.
1:13:10
Vegoe
So it's a great way to find tickets.
1:13:12
Vegoe
Sometimes you get parking on there, too.
1:13:14
Cappy
Nice.
1:13:16
Jûpe
Well, thanks for coming on, Cappy.
1:13:17
Jûpe
It's always great to have you, man.
1:13:19
Cappy
You guys give me a little warmed up for once.
1:13:22
Cappy
The good stretch of the season comes so I can get the vocals going a little bit more.
1:13:27
Jûpe
All right.
1:13:27
Jûpe

1:13:28
Jûpe
