Gophers, but I don't feel like this was a surprise that this was going to be the result in Madison, a lot, you know, to a lot of people. 1:33 Jûpe No, but, you know, I, I, you know, I'm paying attention to some of our guy, Drew and Nate's podcast. 1:44 Jûpe They're saying, you know, Drew found out that the last time they lost four in a row was against Penn State in 2018, when they did the back to back at the end of the season and the beginning of the playoffs. 1:55 Jûpe Don Lucia's last four games as a coach. 1:59 Vegoe Those are some dark times. 2:01 Vegoe Gopher Hockey back then. 2:03 Jûpe And these aren't? 2:05 Vegoe You know, here's the thing. 2:07 Vegoe You know, we talked to Axel Begley about this today. 2:10 Vegoe You know, he was before the media, hasn't been in front of us a lot. 2:14 Vegoe But he basically said that the message from the coaching staff is, you would rather go through this in October than February. 2:26 Jûpe True. 2:27 Vegoe I mean, you don't want to go through it at all. 2:29 Vegoe I mean, I can just hear a lot of Gopher fans saying that right now that they don't expect that. 2:34 Vegoe Well, you don't want to go through this kind of stretch, but there is time for them to figure things out. 2:42 Jûpe There is time, but there might not be time with the NPI. 2:51 Jûpe You might have to get pretty hot and win a lot of games to make just the make up for the beginning of the season. 2:59 Vegoe Here's one thing with the NPI. 3:01 Vegoe The Gophers are very lucky to be in the Big Ten. 3:04 Vegoe As I put this in my Top 20 article, the Big Ten has done very well in non-conference games by far the best conference. 3:14 Vegoe The second best conference is the NCHC, and then you have Hockey East, and they put in a new rule this year. 3:22 Vegoe You don't want to get in this way, but if you have an under 500 record, but you're in the top teams, you can make the tournament this year with that new change. 3:32 Vegoe Jim Connelly on the USCHO Podcast this week was talking about how the Big Ten could have a team under 500 make the tournament this year, because the league is so strong. 3:43 Jûpe I don't like that. 3:44 Vegoe I don't like it either, but you play by the rules that are out there. 3:49 Vegoe Some coaches probably don't like having CHL players, but they chose to add them to their roster, and it's really shaken up College Hockey this year. 3:57 Jûpe It is, and it's one of the criticisms that Gopher fans are having. 4:01 Jûpe Bob didn't want to partake in that. 4:05 Jûpe Is it legit excuse, or is it still wait and see? 4:10 Vegoe I think they probably wouldn't be going through as many struggles as they are right now, if they had added a right shot D, you know, a first round type talent who could help move the puck for them. 4:21 Vegoe I think if they would have added a first round type talent up front, it would have eased things for Minnesota in the scoring front. 4:29 Vegoe You know, we haven't seen a Gopher team have this low of shots, this low of goals for this kind of goal margin in many, many years. 4:40 Vegoe Credit to go for game notes. 4:42 Vegoe Like we're looking at, you know, the 60s and 70s for some of these stats. 4:46 Jûpe Early 70s before I was born. 4:49 Vegoe Yeah, you know, it's old when it was before Jupe was born. 4:53 Jûpe Just turned 53. 4:57 Vegoe So if they would have grabbed a couple CHL guys, maybe they wouldn't be going through this kind of pain right now. 5:04 Vegoe The long picture of this is that the coaching staff likes the recruits that they have. 5:11 Vegoe Bob said, you know, this is not great. 5:15 Vegoe I'm not happy with it. 5:17 Vegoe He joked that his wife locked him out of the house this week until he fixed this. 5:22 Vegoe You know, he got phone calls from other coaches saying, hey, you know, it's about time you had a season like this because we've been doing this a lot. 5:30 Vegoe And you've never had to go through this. 5:33 Jûpe Yeah. 5:34 Jûpe But did he leave a message for the VEG saying, I need some coaching advice since you're pretty active in coaching. 5:40 Jûpe Did he ask for that yet? 5:41 Jûpe He hasn't dropped to that level yet, has he? 5:44 Vegoe No, he hasn't gone there. 5:45 Vegoe And I think his eyes are probably better than mine when it comes to coaching. 5:49 Vegoe But, you know, as an observer, he is trying to put a team that he thinks will get better. 5:56 Vegoe And I don't necessarily think it's been the freshmen that have been the issues for the program right now. 6:02 Jûpe I would agree. 6:03 Jûpe I don't think so. 6:04 Vegoe There are some sophomores and some juniors that need to be more assertive with their games, and they need to be the ones to lead the Gophers into the fight. 6:15 Vegoe And we saw that against Wisconsin this weekend. 6:17 Vegoe It wasn't pretty bad mistakes. 6:22 Vegoe The penalty kill in particular has not been very good lately. 6:26 Vegoe And the coaching staff is basically saying, hey, we had four times to clear the puck where we didn't get out of the zone, and the other team got it and scored a couple seconds later. 6:39 Vegoe You cannot have your leaders doing that with your program. 6:44 Vegoe So, if you're going to start changing things, executing simple plays when you need to execute is top of the list right now. 6:52 Jûpe Yeah, the special teams has been rather bad. 6:54 Jûpe You know, you talk about the kill there, they're 20 for 30, basically, you know, giving up a goal 33% of the time. 7:03 Jûpe Their power play is at, I think, three goals on the year at 12% success rate. 7:12 Jûpe We've been, you know, the power play, it's kind of been like that for quite a few years. 7:18 Jûpe It's not been what traditionally we'd be used to, the plus 20%. 7:25 Jûpe It's been in the teens a lot the last couple of years. 7:27 Jûpe It's not something they've been able to figure out as much, I would say, in the whole Moscow era. 7:35 Vegoe Yeah, you know, Bob really wants his power plays to be creative. 7:39 Vegoe He wants to take the reins off and let them create opportunities almost out of chaos. 7:46 Vegoe He doesn't want to have a lot of predetermined routes, predetermined sets, and I think sometimes players rely on that as a crutch on the power play. 7:54 Vegoe It leads to a lot of easy kills for the opposition. 7:58 Vegoe I think when you have players who aren't playing confidently or they're frustrated, it can be tough to execute the way Bob wants a power play to execute. 8:08 Vegoe I do like the first power play group when Lucky has been in there. 8:12 Vegoe I thought that's been a real dynamic look with him. 8:16 Vegoe Mooney has been good on the power play. 8:18 Vegoe Luke Middlestad has probably been one of the MVPs for the Gophers so far through the stretch. 8:24 Vegoe You can't really fault his play so far this season, but there's a couple other players that need to figure things out. 8:31 Vegoe And you know, Bob said today, you know, I'm confident of one thing. 8:35 Vegoe We're going to be a better team as the season goes forward. 8:39 Vegoe He would like to speed it up, but it's just not happening right now. 8:44 Jûpe Well, some of it does come back to fundamentals. 8:47 Jûpe Yes, their power play numbers are not great. 8:51 Jûpe Their penalty kill numbers are not great, but that kind of goes along with some face-offs, Viggs. 8:56 Jûpe You know, defensive zone face-offs, when a power play starts for the other team, losing that. 9:03 Jûpe I would love to know the percentages of, you know, critical face-offs. 9:06 Jûpe You know, they count them all, but I don't know if we really count, you know, you know, offensive zone face-off when you're not on the power play or defensive zone face-off when you're on the penalty kill compared to center. 9:15 Jûpe I see all that stuff. 9:17 Jûpe The perception for me is, why you lose the face-off right away on a power play and you're chasing and you have to try to reestablish control in the zone. 9:28 Jûpe And by a lot of times, by that time, you may have to come in a second time. 9:33 Jûpe And it's already time for a shift. 9:35 Jûpe And we all know what happens on the defensive zone when they get control. 9:39 Jûpe They're just starting their power play just like that. 9:41 Jûpe And they've got time to set up time to do their thing. 9:43 Jûpe So that's where my concern comes from the face-offs. 9:47 Jûpe It seems like they're just spending a lot of time just win a face-off. 9:51 Vegoe Yeah, it hasn't been pretty. 9:52 Vegoe And I guarantee you that the team knows the numbers for special teams draws. 9:57 Vegoe And, you know, they tried some different things and have have guys on their strong side who aren't typically taking draws, sometimes take them. 10:06 Vegoe It's definitely something that they've been working on for almost the last couple of years, trying to get guys who are better at draws. 10:13 Vegoe And some of it does come with experience. 10:16 Vegoe I think, you know, when you've got veteran players that know how hard it is to win face-offs and pick up all the little tricks along the way, you know, that pays off. 10:26 Vegoe Usually, the guys who lead the country in face-offs aren't freshmen. 10:30 Vegoe You know, they're seasoned veterans who've stuck around for a while and learned some tricks and have that, you know, strength of a 23 or 24-year-old senior. 10:38 Vegoe And Minnesota just hasn't had a lot of centers who could really do that. 10:43 Vegoe Ben Myers might be one of the last, like, real dominant centers for the Gophers in the face-off circle. 10:50 Vegoe It's an element that they really miss, I think. 10:55 Jûpe Well, I have, I'm noticing quite of less familiar names in the chat tonight, Vex. 11:01 Jûpe Not the same old crowd. 11:03 Jûpe I think there might be some frustrated fans, because, you know, you know, a lot of, I'll just say a lot of fans, hey, we should have picked up a CHL guy. 11:13 Jûpe We picked up a D3 guy instead of filling it with a CHL guy with that played a tougher schedule and we still have a roster spot open. 11:22 Jûpe I think those are all legitimate gripes, but we also don't know what's in Bob's head either. 11:28 Jûpe So it's really, it's tough to say. 11:31 Jûpe And, you know, Bob is more old school and he's going to be a little more conservative with some of these changes. 11:39 Jûpe But I think there's an argument both sides with the people frustrated and we know what Bob is trying to do. 11:46 Vegoe I'm sure with the injuries Minnesota's had, that Bob is probably having some second guessing on how he decided to go into this year. 11:56 Vegoe You know, I think he was caught a little off guard with having so many departures. 12:03 Vegoe You know, he said on KFAN this summer when he was talking to PA about the schedule, he's like, I expected this team to be loaded. 12:10 Vegoe You know, he expected to have Oliver Moore back. 12:12 Vegoe He expected to have Ryan Chesley back. 12:14 Vegoe You know, there was a chance that Sam Renzell maybe would come back for another year. 12:18 Vegoe There was a chance Matthew Wood, who scored tonight for the Predators in the NHL, would have been back for another year. 12:23 Vegoe I think you expected to lose Jimmy Snuggerood. 12:27 Vegoe You know, Connor Kurth could have been a player who would be back this year. 12:31 Vegoe And you know, he's playing in the NHL. 12:33 Vegoe And it's not like these guys have really gone into successful teams in the NHL besides Snuggerood. 12:39 Vegoe It made an impact. 12:41 Vegoe You know, they're still kind of developing with their pro franchises playing NHL games. 12:47 Vegoe So you can see his thinking that this team didn't have as many holes as they ended up having going into this year. 12:55 Vegoe But he's choosing to take his licks right now. 12:58 Vegoe And so some of this is self-inflicted because he stuck with guys he recruited and guys he liked rather than go in the portal for, you know, the USA Hockey head coach for the World Juniors coming up. 13:10 Vegoe Probably want to stay behind USA players as much as he could. 13:15 Jûpe So, let's take a look at this past weekend. 13:17 Jûpe 5-2 loss Thursday evening. 13:21 Jûpe A 4-0 loss on Saturday. 13:23 Jûpe Obviously, they're broken up. 13:25 Jûpe The whole thing with TV. 13:26 Jûpe Yes, yeah, yeah, whatever. 13:29 Jûpe I know everyone thought they played better on Friday, but still blanked on the scoreboard. 13:36 Jûpe I have a hard time getting behind. 13:37 Jûpe Yeah, they played better. 13:38 Jûpe I'm like, you still lost 4-0. 13:41 Jûpe It's sure there's positives in there, but you still lost 4-0, Veeegs. 13:45 Jûpe Help me off the ledge. 13:48 Vegoe I'm going to have a hard time helping you off the ledge. 13:50 Jûpe You might, yeah. 13:51 Vegoe It was not a good weekend. 13:53 Vegoe I think they got out attempted in shots, 2-1. 13:57 Vegoe I can't remember. 13:59 Jûpe The shot shotting goals were, Thursday, were like 40-something to the teens. 14:04 Vegoe Right. 14:04 Vegoe And I think I saw Brad Schlossman mentioned the Gophers didn't have a grade A chance on Saturday. 14:14 Vegoe I mean, these are things that you just don't expect to see with Minnesota Hockey. 14:18 Vegoe And just the number of shifts where it's such a struggle to break out of the zone. 14:27 Vegoe And then there's a lack of finish to the shift to allow the next line to have a chance to do something other than defend. 14:35 Jûpe It's connecting shifts you've been talking to us about for years, connecting shifts. 14:40 Vegoe Yes. 14:41 Vegoe And I think this team has gotten through a funk in October where there's just a negativity where they're not fighting through it mentally. 14:51 Vegoe And they're not saying, okay, it's okay just to tie a shift or to hold off the other team from getting any momentum for a little bit. 14:59 Vegoe And eventually maybe we'll get a bounce and things will go away. 15:02 Vegoe Instead you're seeing the Gophers getting in that cycle of just defending and defending and defending. 15:11 Vegoe And it's a hard way to play the game, especially when you get frustrated and you start taking stick penalties like Minnesota has very uncharacteristic of a Bob Bosco coach team to take as many stick penalties and bad penalties as they've taken. 15:25 Vegoe And then to have your penalty kill not be able to take care of those on top of it just makes it too difficult for a team that's not scoring. 15:36 Jûpe I'm still on the cliff and a lot of people are and you know we could the message board has been a little more active the last couple weeks on GPL. 15:51 Jûpe That shootout win against whatever you know against BC and you know playing BC tough is not looking as good anymore because BC's on the verge of dropping out of the top 20 themselves. 16:10 Jûpe It's it's I could feel where the fans are at right now I can I totally can feel it. 16:18 Vegoe Yeah, I think BC probably is going to be a team that's going to be okay at the end of the year. 16:23 Vegoe Michigan Tech, a team that's probably going to be okay in CCHA at the end of the year. 16:27 Vegoe It looks like North Dakota, Minnesota, Duluth, Wisconsin are all pretty good teams right now. 16:33 Vegoe So going through that schedule with this roster with a team that out can't outscore its mistakes is hard to watch. 16:42 Vegoe And it's not what Gopher fans are used to. 16:45 Vegoe And Bob said something really interesting today. 16:48 Vegoe He's like, you know, when we went to Tampa, we had 11,000 fans with us and things were going great. 16:55 Vegoe And he said, the players have to accept that those 11,000 fans are going to be just as upset when they see their team go through a 2-7-1 stretch like they've done in October. 17:06 Vegoe And they've got to wear that because you can't have all the support when things are going well and not expect any criticism when it's not. 17:15 Vegoe And so I think this team can't can't shy away from the results right now and can't shy away from the work because I do think it's gonna have to be a little bit different team this year if they're gonna be successful because the offense isn't coming easy so they're gonna have to cut out the mistakes. 17:34 Jûpe I look at the goal tending. 17:37 Jûpe Funny thing is people said that's gonna be so tricky this year and honestly they haven't been terrible at all. 17:44 Jûpe Neither of them. 17:45 Jûpe I think they've both held their own. 17:47 Jûpe I don't think there's, you know, I thought that Michigan State or oh, that goal that Luca let in early, you know, at home, Caboixco was a little iffy. 17:58 Vegoe The Duluth goal that yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it might have ramped off the stick. 18:03 Vegoe It looked like it was kind of a screen and maybe an odd deflection to me. 18:07 Vegoe You couldn't see it real well on the replay for that one. 18:10 Vegoe But that was kind of a shot that looked like it went through the defender's shaft on its way than that. 18:16 Vegoe And those can sometimes be tricky. 18:18 Vegoe But I don't think goaltending has been the fault. 18:20 Jûpe Yeah, but you know, at the beginning of the season, we kind of felt that, ooh, we're just not sure on goaltending. 18:27 Vegoe On the flip side, I don't think either goalie has really stepped forward to be number one. 18:31 Vegoe So neither one of them has really stood on his head. 18:35 Jûpe They're getting the challenge. 18:36 Jûpe They're certainly getting challenged. 18:38 Vegoe If you were looking at Nebraska-Omaha, they certainly have a goalie who's standing on his head right now. 18:44 Vegoe I think he's seen like 60% high danger chances, and he's still got like an under two goals against average. 18:50 Vegoe And that's why Omaha is a dangerous team right now. 18:53 Vegoe But I don't think we're expecting that out of area or deep escrow. 18:58 Jûpe All right. 19:00 Jûpe Fallon out. 19:02 Jûpe What do we know about Fallon? 19:05 Vegoe Upper body injury, three to four weeks. 19:09 Vegoe I saw him run in the stairs at Marriott today. 19:13 Jûpe So basically kind of the almost the end of the first part of the season. 19:18 Vegoe Yeah. 19:18 Vegoe So he's going to miss. 19:20 Vegoe You know, he's going to be able to try to keep his legs with some conditioning, but he won't be able to play for three or four weeks. 19:27 Jûpe Thomas, the last I heard was about 5050 for this weekend, but more likely maybe next weekend. 19:33 Vegoe I think that's CoachSpeak hoping it's 5050. 19:37 Jûpe Because he said that last week as well. 19:39 Vegoe Right. 19:39 Jûpe Kind of thought he might be back last week and there was no sign of him. 19:42 Jûpe Yeah. 19:42 Vegoe He didn't he didn't skate today or yesterday. 19:44 Vegoe They'll evaluate him tomorrow. 19:47 Vegoe I would think it's unlikely we see him back for Notre Dame. 19:51 Vegoe And if he misses Notre Dame, do you really want to risk him against Long Island? 19:55 Vegoe Or do you want to give him another weekend off? 19:57 Vegoe You know, we'll see. 19:59 Vegoe Or maybe you play him just one of those games to try to get back into it. 20:03 Vegoe Just keep him fresh. 20:03 Vegoe But you know, Cal Thomas is a pretty critical part of this team. 20:08 Vegoe And I think it would be reckless to put him in there if the doctors weren't 100 percent clear on it. 20:16 Jûpe Ludky out still a virus. 20:19 Jûpe We're all just thinking it's got to be mono. 20:22 Jûpe That's the only thing that makes sense. 20:23 Jûpe But, you know, maybe it is, maybe it isn't. 20:26 Vegoe And with mono, there can be the swelling of the spleen. 20:29 Vegoe You know, if that's what's happening, that could be a real dangerous situation. 20:34 Jûpe Just so rundown. 20:36 Vegoe And the fatigue. 20:37 Vegoe So that's just something they're going to have to deal with. 20:40 Vegoe You know, he looked like a transfer that just really fit this program and really stepped right in and dealt with the pressure very well. 20:48 Vegoe Bob's saying a lot of guys are in the first choir chairs right now this year. 20:52 Vegoe They've never been there. 20:53 Vegoe They got to sit in the back and it's quite a different experience. 20:56 Vegoe But for Dayar Ludke, it seems like he's fit in just fine. 20:59 Vegoe Hopefully, he gets back soon. 21:01 Jûpe And it sounds like we might hear from Townsend fairly soon. 21:08 Jûpe That's really the first we've heard about him after his injuries. 21:11 Vegoe Yeah, today was the first time I've seen him skate with the team during their practice. 21:16 Vegoe You know, he had the red cross on, so he was kind of out of contact and things. 21:21 Vegoe But he was actually out there on the ice with the team. 21:23 Vegoe That's the first I've seen him play with them since probably in the early preseason. 21:29 Jûpe Well, what can we expect from him? 21:31 Jûpe Yeah, I mean, I'm guessing they want to try to at least get, hopefully, across, you know, across all dot i's across these. 21:39 Jûpe They want to get him in probably before the winter break. 21:41 Jûpe But what if, honestly, it's even if he does that, we're probably not going to see the real Teddy Townsend and probably until probably the beginning of twenty twenty six. 21:52 Vegoe Yeah, I think we've seen some players with upper body injuries come back and it kind of takes a while to get the feel for the game again, because it's just something where they haven't been able to handle pucks and traffic and and deal with the contact and things like that. 22:07 Vegoe You know, he does bring an element of speed and skill that the Gophers could use right now. 22:13 Vegoe You look at the roster, there's a lot of size throughout, but you haven't seen a ton of speed and skill besides, you know, guys like Mooney on the roster. 22:23 Vegoe So it's an element that they probably need right now. 22:27 Vegoe I just don't know how much it's going to help right away for that. 22:31 Jûpe Interesting, both Cappy was asking you and I about him just a couple of weeks ago because he really, he saw him play and he really likes what Teddy Townsend could bring to this team potentially. 22:41 Vegoe Yeah, I mean, he's a player where at the junior level, that speed and skill can really flash. 22:47 Vegoe I always wonder how well that can translate to college where the players are bigger, the spaces are tighter, the structure is a little more organized and how skilled are they? 23:00 Vegoe The speed and skills there, but executing it at the college level is always a leap that you don't really know about until you see it in play. 23:08 Vegoe And it's hard to tell in practice right now how quick he's gonna be able to adjust. 23:14 Vegoe Okay. 23:15 Vegoe Okay. 23:16 Jûpe Well, I'm feeling better about the injuries. 23:18 Jûpe At least we know something about him. 23:20 Jûpe And I'm excited to see him when he gets out there. 23:23 Jûpe I'm really excited to see him in January if everything goes well with his healing and to focus on something else. 50:22 Vegoe It's like hockey's too much time to want to do it. 50:24 Vegoe So they started their Bantamere with a new goalie. 50:28 Vegoe And he said they went 0 and 15 in the first half of the season. 50:32 Vegoe He said it was just tough because they were used to playing a certain way. 50:37 Vegoe And with a new goalie and that, they had to really adjust. 50:42 Vegoe And he said, you know, they figured it out. 50:44 Vegoe They got through their district. 50:45 Vegoe They got in the regional tournament. 50:48 Vegoe I don't think they made state that year, but he said it was a great learning experience for him as a player, that, you know, there's two ways you can go and stuff like this happens. 50:58 Vegoe And the only way up is through. 51:01 Vegoe And when
