This is The GPL Podcast, part of the Pulltab Sports family.
0:14
You know, it was good to see that the Big Ten Network recognized how to cover hockey.
0:24
This is a 10.8% beer.
0:27
Danker, Hopper.
0:29
Lots of loaf of bread.
0:31
Yes, it is.
0:36
The over-under for this game, it's seven.
0:40
Which is a big number.
0:43
Here's the hammer.
0:43
Hammer.
0:49
Now, here's Jupiter and Vegoe.
1:03
Good evening, and welcome to The GPL Podcast, episode number 271.
1:10
Well, good evening, Mr.
1:12
Vegoe.
1:14
Good weekend all around for Minnesota.
1:17
But then I'm watching TV the other night, and Barb's like, did I just hear Vegoe's name?
1:23
I'm like, uh-oh.
1:24
So maybe things aren't as good in the Vegoe household, is it right now?
1:28
Little bit of drama in the local parks and rec here in Minneapolis.
1:34
They're looking to save some money by shutting down some of the beloved outdoor hockey rinks.
1:40
And so we've mobilized the Vegoe circle of friends and reached out to my friends at Fox 9, and we chatted a little bit about the rink closures that were happening, and they reported on it.
1:52
And then I spent a little time at the board meeting tonight during the public comment period with some of my friends like Mike Snee, formerly of College Hockey, Inc.
2:01
And now with the Minnesota Wild, and a bunch of people from the Minneapolis Titans trying to advocate for outdoor rink opportunities for our kids.
2:10
Well, how about that?
2:11
That's a lot more important than Gopher Hockey.
2:13
It did kind of take priority.
2:15
I was so scattered this week that I showed up to practice yesterday on election day, and then realized quickly that Media Day was actually today for the Gopher Hockey Team, which did not work for me.
2:28
So luckily, Bob let me in for a couple of minutes yesterday to chat about the weekend and the upcoming border battle.
2:37
All right.
2:38
Well, the upcoming border battle, of course, we're going to have Todd Milewski on.
2:42
So rang him up.
2:43
And of course, he's going to be on.
2:44
So let's bring him in.
2:45
Todd Milewski.
2:48
How's it going, Todd?
2:49
Pretty good.
2:50
How are you guys doing?
2:51
We're doing good.
2:52
You know, like I said, keep the rinks open.
2:55
Yeah.
2:56
Come on.
2:57
Let the kids play.
2:58
Let the kids play.
2:58
Yeah, there was a movie.
3:00
Especially when it's right across the street from your front door.
3:05
You know, I don't want to get too into it because it is right across the street.
3:08
So I see it because they dropped off the boards last week.
3:12
Like they were going to start putting the rink in and then they came back later in the week and collected the boards.
3:16
And that's the only reason I found out and looked at this situation.
3:21
And it's the rink where our Hockey Association, where the kids gather.
3:25
We have a couple other rinks in like Van Cleave, which is my campus, but a lot of college kids played there.
3:31
Logan Park is a little bit more by the river, but that's more of an adult league type place.
3:36
This Wyndham Park rink is where a lot of the kids from the community can play.
3:41
And there's a warming house and hot cocoa and popcorn for them.
3:44
We've got lots of skates donated.
3:46
So it's really become the anchor for the kid hockey in Northeast.
3:50
And Joe Dzik grew up playing at this rink.
3:52
That's where he learned to play the game.
3:54
His mom kicked him out of the house and said, don't come home until dinner.
3:57
And he turned into a Mr.
3:58
Hockey and an NHL player.
4:02
Well, good luck in trying to stop that.
4:04
I know it can be really tough.
4:07
I mean, sometimes they just get it in their mind, and it's just tough to change people's minds.
4:12
Hopefully, you get a lot of support for that.
4:14
So we appreciate all the support we can get.
4:18
But this past weekend, Gophers had a tough series against Penn State, came out with three points.
4:24
On the other end, Wisconsin finally showed some life, Todd.
4:29
You know, we had Cappy on last week.
4:31
He covered that series.
4:32
He says, well, Notre Dame wins every Friday night, and then they lose every Saturday night.
4:37
So he kind of half predicted what was gonna happen for the Badgers.
4:42
Yeah, and it's, I mean, from the Wisconsin side, they scored two goals in both games.
4:47
And you're thinking you're scoring two goals in a game, you're probably not gonna win a whole lot of them, especially with the way the, the goaltending hasn't exactly been great for them, started this season, like compared to last season.
5:02
But they were able to grind out a 2-1 win on Saturday after losing 3-2 in overtime on Friday.
5:07
And that was, I mean, they needed that.
5:10
They'd lost five in a row.
5:12
They were feeling it.
5:12
They're down to four healthy defensemen playing a forward on the.
5:19
Yeah, it was getting to be a point where, okay, they're one and six.
5:28
If they would have lost Saturday, they're one and seven.
5:31
Looking at this weekend thinking, probably looking at one and nine after being nine and one through 10 games last season.
5:38
And how much of a flip that could be.
5:40
And I mean, honestly, well, we might be talking about him being nine, two and eight after the end of this weekend, but at least for the few days here, they've been able to have some positive feelings coming out of that series.
5:55
And for Minnesota Veegs, we predicted a sweep.
5:59
Probably not the kind of sweep we were thinking.
6:03
A 3-1 victory on Friday night.
6:07
Not an easy victory for the team.
6:10
Saturday night, a 1-0 last 26 seconds win.
6:18
Penn State played really well and really shut down the Gophers really the entire weekend.
6:24
Yeah, I thought it was a real tight checking series.
6:27
Penn State, as I talked about last week on the podcast, seems to be committing more to the defensive end of the ice.
6:34
And they were really physical and tough on the Gophers, took away time and space from them and made things challenging.
6:41
You know, on Friday, the Gophers got the power play goal from Jimmy Snuggerrood, and Jimmy got the other goal, both kind of around the net.
6:50
So we were kind of critiquing his perimeter play and taking these shots that maybe weren't as dangerous.
6:55
Well, he got tighter to the net and created some offense.
6:59
I know Pat McAuletti was especially happy to see Jimmy get around the net and get goals that way.
7:04
And then Saturday, the Gopher power play kind of disappeared a little bit on them.
7:09
You know, they got credited with three chances, technically really two, because the one was just the two seconder, but their zone entries were not clean and they had a hard time getting any kind of rhythm established on Saturday.
7:23
Penn State, I think the only power play goal they've given them ball season was the one on Friday to the Gophers.
7:28
But Minnesota needs an effective power play this season.
7:32
And that's something to watch as they go into the border battle.
7:36
One thing we've talked about quite a bit these last few weeks is Snuggerud frustrated.
7:40
And obviously he did score the two goals Friday night, but honestly did something stupid Saturday night and put himself out of the game pretty quickly.
7:51
Yeah, the series was one of those physical series where Penn State was on the Gopher players, a lot of stick work, a lot of body work.
7:59
And he tried to do something physical and made contact with the head.
8:04
Easy call for the refs on video review.
8:07
You know, this is one of those things in the new video review where they don't have to throw guys out for hits like this.
8:13
They can take a look at it and they deemed it being worthy of a game misconduct.
8:19
Not a smart play by Snuggerud.
8:21
It forced the Gophers already shorthanded with Cal Thomas getting injured on Friday and missing Saturday.
8:29
And then August Faloon wasn't an option, so they had to scramble the lines a little bit.
8:33
And Minnesota held on even without Jimmy Snuggerud and Cal Thomas, but it was a difficult game for them.
8:41
And Liam Souleir answered the bell when he had to.
8:44
He made two or three really big saves late in the game.
8:49
Think got one odd band rush from Penn State that Souleir made a big save on coming out to challenge.
8:55
And there was another goal line play where he anticipated great and shut down the lines, having a chance to get in the game.
9:01
So shut out for him against his former team.
9:03
That was a big storyline from the weekend.
9:08
So, Todd, we have been speculating.
9:12
Hastings lost quite a few top players.
9:16
Yes.
9:16
And it's definitely hurt the team this year.
9:20
We think, I think some of those players were kind of, could be part of the trouble as well.
9:26
But one thing you've been talking about in your column since the beginning of the season is consistency.
9:32
They can't, they seem to have to do this.
9:33
They were a good one year, then they're back down.
9:35
They're good, then they're back down.
9:38
And it's still following that path right now for Wisconsin.
9:43
And that's no way to sustain a fan base that has become disenchanted with not being the program that it was 25 or 30 years ago, honestly.
10:00
And it's just, it's tough for them to maintain anything because even in this new era we're in of transfers and player freedoms and all the things we've seen develop, NIL, all these things that have happened, it does feel like they want to be a team that's, or Hastings wants them to be a team that's going to be built around four, three, four year kind of players.
10:38
I just don't know what, whether that's a reality anymore.
10:43
I don't know that you can keep a third line center happy being a third line center if he thinks he should be getting top six minutes.
10:54
And that's, that's going to be a real challenge going forward here.
10:58
I mean, they had 12 new players last season, they have 12 new players this season.
11:02
That's not a sustainable way of doing things, especially if those 12 new players aren't the real, real high-end talented right away going to cause or create excitement, create offense, going to do everything you need them to do right away.
11:23
If you're waiting for guys to develop two and three years and you're still rotating a lot of people in and out, that's going to be tough to be a consistent team.
11:32
And I don't know that that's what we're seeing so far this season with Wisconsin.
11:37
It's honestly, it's, I mean, they just haven't been able to finish.
11:41
They've had, they're at 63 percent in even strength shot attempts.
11:49
They haven't trailed in shot attempts in a game this season.
11:54
Yet, they're two and six and they're, they've scored 12 goals.
11:57
And it's, it's not for a lack of chances, it's for a lack of finishing.
12:01
And that's really what's going to be the biggest thing they have to figure out is, you know, getting some more players that be in positions to, to, to score and to be creating a difference that way.
12:15
What do you think, Veegs?
12:16
Is it just, we know Hastings is a good coach.
12:20
We've seen what he's done.
12:21
And we've seen what he's done at other places like Mankato.
12:25
But as everyone says, it's different at a Big Ten Blue Blood school.
12:32
It is a little different.
12:33
And historically, I feel like Wisconsin has brought in these talented players and developed them to be pro prospect type guys instead of developing a program.
12:46
And I think that has kind of bled into this year's roster where it doesn't have that continuity.
12:53
And Hastings was able to jumpstart it last year by bringing in Fitzgerald and Tassie to the lineup.
13:01
And that really stabilized things.
13:03
Silly was probably underrated of everyone that got brought in last year.
13:10
Yep.
13:10
So that kind of stabilized the program, I think, for last year.
13:14
And as you get into this year, they lose some talent and they just don't have enough scoring, experience, continuity to keep things going.
13:23
You know, if I could contrast that with the way Moscow is running the Gophers team, you look at how they handle Jimmy Snuggerwood out of the lineup and Cal Thomas out of the lineup.
13:32
And he's rolling his forwards in a 0-0 hockey game.
13:36
You know, he just went with his four centers, one after the next.
13:40
You know, I was looking at time on ice, you know, Jimmy Clark, 17 and a half minutes, Hougland, 14 minutes, Alder Moore, 17 minutes, and then Eric Paulson, the freshman, 15-23.
13:52
Beckett Hendrickson, Brody Zemmer, 12-28, 16-56.
13:56
He is giving them ice time and experience in a competitive hockey game.
14:01
You have Thomas out of the lineup, group of plays a season high, 16-45.
14:07
You know, John Whipple's been playing about seven, eight minutes a night, he plays 12-13.
14:11
Alex Begley hasn't seen the ice at all this year and he gets 319, including some big shifts in the third period.
14:18
It's just a different philosophy in how to build your program.
14:21
And yes, it's easy when Bob does this and they beat Penn State 1-0, but they very could easily lost that game at the cost of getting these guys experience and building that continuity in the program.
14:33
So one thing we have talked about, we kind of touched on last week, Todd, is yes, you might have lost some talented players that were maybe bad eggs, attitudes.
14:45
You know, I can understand that.
14:47
But one thing those players do is make the other players around them better.
14:53
Um, now all of a sudden they're gone, making other players better for their other teams.
14:59
And now you're kind of missing some of that leadership on the ice, I would say, maybe not, you know, some personality stuff and issues.
15:07
But you're missing some of that on the ice.
15:10
I don't know.
15:11
I don't know if that's my microphone that's making that noise.
15:13
But I'm not sure.
15:16
I think one of the things is that the players that they had last season that were scoring goals and, you know, eating a lot of the minutes, were able to take some of the pressure off of some of the players that right now are feeling a lot of pressure.
15:30
It wasn't on Simon Tassie's shoulders, even though he contributed a lot.
15:35
It wasn't on, you know, Owen Lindmark's shoulders.
15:40
He gave a lot more than they thought he was going to, but probably more than was realistic and, you know, sustainable year over year.
15:52
Now those guys are being asked to play a lot bigger role, and it may not be the most comfortable thing for them, to be a, someone be expected to be a high scorer.
16:05
And it's, there are a few players that they brought in.
16:12
Coy Leskoski from RIT scored 14 goals for them last season, hasn't scored yet this season.
16:18
I know he's feeling that.
16:22
Kyle Kukinen from Michigan Tech also hasn't scored.
16:26
So he's third on team in shot attempts, but hasn't scored yet.
16:30
And that gets to players after a while.
16:36
Just those little things build up and start developing a frustration and have a lot of games where you're getting held to one or two goals and that's tough to shake out of.
16:52
The more it happens, it just feels like it's just repeating itself and you're not going to get there and you're in a game that's 2-2.
16:59
And you start to question whether you're going to find that third goal.
17:02
And it happened a lot.
17:04
They were 2-2 going to third at Denver a couple of weeks ago and I think had a shot advantage in the third period, but just couldn't get that goal and end up losing 4-2 with an empty netter.
17:15
And it's little differences like that, little moments in games, in critical points of games where they're just not finding the wins, whether it's a puck battle or it's getting a key goal there, getting a goal to go ahead, they're just not finding that right now and that's at least consistently.
17:39
And that's really why they're at where they're at.
17:44
So Veegs, it's going to be interesting to see what happens this weekend.
17:47
Obviously, Rival coming in.
17:50
They don't want to be embarrassed.
17:52
It's going to be close, I think, the whole weekend.
17:56
Honestly, right now, I think Hastings just has to stick with what he's sticking with.
18:00
And hopefully, the players pick it up because, like Todd said, it's not like they're not far off here.
18:06
They really aren't.
18:08
Yeah, Bob Oscoe was telling me this week when he watched film, he's like, they look like they're close.
18:15
You know, the team I see on film and the chances they're generating, that's what you expect out of Mike Hastings' teams.
18:22
They just have to maybe get those balances a little bit, get a little bit more confidence.
18:27
You know, they're probably not as bad as their record would indicate.
18:30
You know, if you look at the metrics, they're a competitive team in pretty much every game except the one Denver.
18:37
And that's going to happen to a lot of teams when they play a second night at Denver.
18:41
So I expect a good game this weekend.
18:44
You think as a Minnesota fan that the Gophers have a lot more talent.
18:48
But as we saw in the Penn State game, if the other teams committed, the scoring chances might not come easily.
18:56
And Hastings seems to do well against Minnesota teams.
19:02
So it'll be interesting to see.
19:04
Well, before we go any further, we need to hear from some of our sponsors here.
19:07
And Veegs, we need to talk about Jimmy's.
19:10
Tell me about Jimmy's.
19:12
Yeah, I mean, it's apple season out there.
19:15
I was just at my local cub and I was browsing all the apples and I needed them because I've got my Jimmy's Caramel Dip at home.
19:22
And I've got my first kiss.
19:23
I've got my honey bee.
19:25
I got my traditional honey crisp.
19:27
I've got my sweet tangos.
19:28
All of them taste great with Jimmy's.
19:31
You can get the original or the Sea Salt Caramel and find it at your local grocery store today.
19:37
And of course, we've also got Lunch Bucket Hockey Veegs.
19:42
Tell me about it.
19:44
Yeah, grit and grind players that would do anything for their teammates.
19:47
That's Lunch Bucket Hockey.
19:49
From mites to beer leaguers and everywhere in between, Lunch Bucket players are the hardworking unsung heroes of the greatest game on ice.
19:56
Check out lunchbuckethockey.com if you're thinking about getting some apparel for hockey season or maybe some beer league jerseys.
20:03
Check out that site.
20:04
Couple of local guys loving hockey.
20:07
Definitely.
20:08
We thank Lunch Bucket Hockey and Jimmy's for sponsoring The GPL Podcast.
20:13
And now, as we made a tradition this year, Veegs, it is your top 20 for this week.
20:18
Of course, you still have Denver up top because they deserve it.
20:22
They haven't lost the game.
20:23
They're playing well.
20:25
Yeah, I think Denver, BC, Minnesota are looking like my top three teams in college hockey right now.
20:31
I know Michigan State's in the mix there.
20:34
I don't feel as confident with them.
20:36
I think there's kind of this tier from four to 12 or 13, where all those teams are going to shake things up.
20:43
Obviously, Cornell had the big weekend with North Dakota.
20:47
But as the godfather of hockey, Brad Schloss and told me, the Fighting Hawks were pretty banged up.
20:53
And so who knows what you can totally take out of that series, but Cornell earned their number one vote from that one.
20:59
They earned their number one vote.
21:01
Todd, is it you voting for Cornell?
21:06
I can't tell you that it was not me.
21:12
I was surprised I didn't get more votes this week, Veegs.
21:14
I honestly am.
21:15
You thought someone might join the bandwagon, the big red bandwagon?
21:19
Because, you know, do I recall maybe the first one first or two polls?
21:23
Wasn't there two people on the Cornell bandwagon originally?
21:27
I think and then somebody left.
21:31
So it's tough for them early in the season, right?
21:33
Because nobody sees it for four weeks or whatever it is.
21:37
Right.
21:38
Well, I've always thought that's the hard thing with the ECAC Ivy League schools is they just don't play very many non-conference games.
21:45
Yeah.
21:45
You know, Cornell plays these games against North Dakota and then they get right back into the schedule.
21:49
So who knows what we're going to have out of Cornell?
21:53
Yes, they've got a deep veteran team.
21:55
They got two big wins.
21:56
That's going to be huge for them in the pairwise.
21:58
If they take care of business in the ECAC this year, you know, they're going to be in that top eight.
22:04
That's just kind of how it's going to work.
22:06
I'm interested to see how Maine does this weekend.
22:10
They've got a big series here with BC.
22:13
That's one I'll be watching.
22:14
It'll be on ESPN Plus, I imagine.
22:16
And then UMass Lowell will be playing BU.
22:18
I think that'll be another one to watch because there's just so much in this middle of the top 20 that we don't know about yet.
22:25
I was, you know, trying to figure out what's going to happen with Augustana and Minnesota State and St.
22:30
Cloud.
22:31
You know, they didn't really get much done this weekend in press.
22:35
Ohio State, we'll see how they're doing.
22:38
You know, they've got a big series of Michigan State.
22:42
We'll see if it will be a good test for them.
22:44
They've done well so far.
22:48
Let me see here.
22:50
It's Vegoe's microphone.
22:51
I turned off my microphone.
22:53
Hey, me.
22:55
Just keep your hard time, Vegoe.
22:58
You've got Boston University at number 10.
23:00
They dropped quite a bit.
23:04
Todd Michigan just went into Boston University and took care of them.
23:08
It wasn't one of those games like Tide 1-1, or something like that, and then it was all of a sudden 5-1 by the end of the period.
23:14
But that's what Michigan does, right?
23:15
What they can do is when they smell blood, they can attack.
23:21
Then I thought it was coming back the second night and getting the overtime win when you know BU is going to have a pretty strong push, being able to outlast that and get out of there with a second win.
23:41
Pretty impressive overall result there for Michigan, which I guess I'm not surprised by, but I don't know that I had them going in there and doing that going into the weekend.
23:52
Yeah, I would agree.
23:54
And I didn't realize that North Dakota was so injured, Veegs, like our friend Slash was saying.
24:01
I had no idea.
24:02
I was listening to our friends at USCHO, and they're going to put their entire bank roll on North Dakota at Cornell on DraftKings.
24:08
I think those last weekend.
24:10
So I'm glad they didn't.
24:12
They were going to put their pizza money on Penn State this weekend as well.
24:15
So Todd said, choose the over between Michigan and Minnesota when it was seven, which is why I don't gamble.
24:24
What was that, a 2-1 game?
24:29
So yeah, I don't gamble either.
24:33
Gambling ruins families.
24:35
So Todd, looking at Vig's list here, is your list similar, I'm guessing?
24:40
I mean, yeah, it's, you know, probably, you know, there's, I would imagine I've got one off here and there, but I can't really find much to pick at there.
24:52
I mean, Bemidji is the question I have there is like, how long is that gonna last?
24:59
I guess, I mean, that's what I feel like.
25:02
We'll find out next week.
25:04
Sure, I think that's, I've been surprised by Ohio State, but I think I have them like maybe 12th ish.
25:16
I mean, I was impressed when they were here a few weeks ago.
25:23
Well, they pretty much were, you know, did exactly what they did last season in the playoffs to Wisconsin, you know, frustrate them, not, you know, they gave up chances, but not great ones.
25:37
And they just seem to play to the identity that they have to play to, which is just, you know, hard working, you know, grid out some goals kind of team.
25:48
So I'm curious to see where that goes from here with Ohio State.
25:55
Anything else on your list here, Veegs?
25:57
Looks pretty solid this week.
25:59
Yeah, I think Western Michigan is a team to watch as well.
26:03
On this top 20, I think they've got a lot of talent on their roster this year.
26:07
I'm just really interested to see how they play in the NCHC this year.
26:11
They could be a Dark Horse team.
26:14
All right.
26:15
All right.
26:15
I want to bring up one question here.
26:18
Real quick, I saw from Corey, he's talking about power play zone entries.
26:22
Have you watched the power play zone entries?
26:24
Yes, Vegoe definitely watches all that stuff closely.
26:27
It's awful.
26:28
Moore should be able to carry it in.
26:30
But why isn't he doing it?
26:32
And Clark can fly this year, too.
26:35
What are the issues on the power play that you're seeing maybe you would like to see tweaked?
26:39
Besides, you know, moving snug around, like we've talked about.
26:43
Yeah, I think that first unit is the one that's having most of the problems.
26:46
And that's Paulson, Lamb, Wood, Snugger, Renzel.
26:51
None of them really feel comfortable, I think, carrying the puck in the zone and gaining possession.
26:57
And they haven't had success when they've tried to chip it in and go win puck battles.
27:03
So that group, I think, is probably on a little bit of thin ice as a fivesome.
27:08
When Oliver Moore was on that group at the start of the year and in practice, as I saw, he's the guy that can gain the blue line.
27:15
He's so fast and good on his edges that if he's that player carrying the puck through that area of the ice, he's very confident.
27:22
The second unit actually looks pretty good with what they've been doing.
27:26
So it'll be interesting to see how long they stick with the units as they have them right now.
27:32
Okay, Corey, I don't know about this question though.
27:34
Of course, questions moved right as I click on it.
27:38
Maybe in overtime, talking about fireberry momentum is now very real from what I've seen and heard.
27:43
Doesn't that happen every year at North Dakota?
27:46
Every loss at North Dakota?
27:48
Yeah, I mean, it seems like especially in the fall around this time, boy, if North Dakota hasn't won every game, fire the coach.
27:57
Dave Haxdell was fired 32 times.
28:03
Yes, he was.
28:04
It was a tragedy.
28:08
I think people in North Dakota have a hard time because the fighting hawks are kind of an end of the year team.
28:13
Sometimes it takes them a while.
28:15
And when they get to March, they are ready to battle.
28:17
So take a patient fan to deal with that.
28:21
They don't have any up there.
28:24
Sorry, they don't.
28:26
But so far, I have like the second power play unit for the Gophers.
28:30
Yeah, almost more than their first unit.
28:32
They just seem more dynamic, more creative.
28:36
They're not so reliant on one player to get things done.
28:40
Yes, the first power play unit has gotten some goals, but they have some amazing talent who make some amazing talented plays like Wood and Stunrood and some guys around the neck can clean up on stuff like that.
28:55
So Todd, you need to tell me about the Brats in Wisconsin.
28:59
I saw a headline something about Brats just a week or two ago.
29:05
What's going on with Brats in Wisconsin?
29:07
Is something wrong?
29:08
Real quick, is that like one of your most clicked on stories this year?
29:12
Honestly, yeah, so I've been doing stories out of old football games, kind of more of the fan experience side of things.
29:23
Early in the season, this was their first year at Camp Randall selling beer.
29:30
So there was a lot of that and what that was like and the lines that they had to blow out a couple of walls and create some new concession stands because there weren't enough places to sell and they're trying to direct people out to these new places.
29:45
So that was all that was that.
29:49
I did a story recently about just what they have to do to to do the food service basically for for a home football.
29:58
It's it's a I imagine there was a really involved process.
30:06
And it's it is even more than I imagined because you're talking about preparing 10,000 brats, 10,000 hot dogs for every game, having to order those, having to get them delivered, having to store them, getting the buns, getting them around the stadium.
30:24
It's yeah, it's crazy.
30:25
But logistics, hell, yeah.
30:27
And but the headline we put on it was, you know, this the 799 brat sells thousands a game.
30:37
And here's, you know, the backstory or whatever.
30:40
But I think everyone took that as being like, oh, my God, brats are 799 now, which for some people was was honestly, it was like, I'm never paying 799 for a brat at a game.
30:53
Like you haven't been to a game for a while or haven't bought at a concession stand at a game for a while, have you?
31:00
Because that that's kind of the going rate.
31:05
I don't I don't I guess I haven't priced it out, but I go to Brewers Games and that seems pretty reasonable for.
31:12
Yeah, so you're going to pay a lot for any food at any place these days, or especially for beer or anything like that.
31:23
$8 brought solid if it's good according to the room.
31:26
I mean, that's that's the truth.
31:28
That's a good broad.
31:29
It's a good broad.
31:31
I mean, you never really know until you get it right.
31:35
Kind of the you're not wrong with you can't really look at how it looks.
31:40
I mean, who's still on Instacovies?
31:46
Yeah, I like going to the Jax Cafe stuff.
31:50
Parlor Burger at Huntington Bank.
31:53
Those are always good.
31:55
The cheese curd quality has gone down.
31:57
I don't know.
31:57
Maybe we got to send Andy Greeter or Jess Myers to do some investigative journalism on that.
32:03
But if you're going to eat at a game, it's going to be pricey.
32:09
Do you like doing the different kind of stories like that, Todd?
32:12
Honestly, yeah.
32:14
I mean, because it's got to be.
32:15
I mean, it's not about it's about sports, but it's not about sports.
32:20
It's about something that I think people engage with because it's more directly about what they're doing at the stadium.
32:30
I mean, I'm not a big football exes and always guy anyway, so I can't really write with any sort of legitimacy about what's going on in the field most of the time.
32:44
So rather than doing that, that's probably where my, if I'm going to be at a football game, that's I think where my sweet spot is.
32:57
I'm nothing wrong with that.
32:59
Or is he going to interview the fans about the playlist and the volume of sound at the games?
33:05
Yeah, I've been doing that too.
33:07
And yeah, at some point, I realized that I'm the guy that's asking people what's wrong all the time or what they don't like.
33:18
So I intentionally one game went out and said, what do you like?
33:23
What are they doing right here?
33:24
Because I felt like everything I was doing ended up being so negative, even though that wasn't necessarily like the idea behind it.
33:31
But that's just how it turned out.
33:35
And so I tried flipping that around the other way and got people to say, yeah, they do really well with this.
33:42
You know, the premium areas that they've put in are really well thought out.
33:48
And it's not all doom and gloom coming for me.
33:52
I like the hope anyway.
33:55
What's the next positive one coming out, Todd?
33:59
To be determined, they're playing their next home game.
34:05
Well, football is a buy this week, which is good for this, you know, the hockey series coming this weekend.
34:12
But they have Oregon here next week.
34:14
So another night game, a third night game in a row, four night games for the season at home.
34:22
That's a lot of pregame drinking.
34:24
That's so that I mean, that is a little bit of the at this point in the season, with the success level having been pretty low.
34:37
Are people going to be just more interested in hanging on the tailgates for for the rest of the game there?
34:47
I know Oregon's pretty good.
34:50
It looks like it.
34:52
It's hard to sell wins, but you can sell a game day experience, right?
34:55
They're trying.
34:57
Everyone is trying because everyone needs that revenue.
35:00
Even even more.
35:02
Now revenue sharing is coming.
35:05
No, but that's that whole thing.
35:08
Well, we, you know, I think we can get into that in overtime.
35:11
I was going to say, that can be a while.
35:13
Yeah, we'll get into that in overtime.
35:15
But first we need to last hear from our other sponsors, Duke Cannon and Cub.
35:22
Are you a hard worker?
35:24
Then you need a soap that works just as hard as you do.
35:27
Look no further than Duke Cannon and their seasonal selections, including trophy game, Buck Moon and the ever popular candy corn.
35:36
Grab yourself Duke Cannon's big ass brick of soap today and try it out yourself.
35:42
Climb aboard the Duke Cannon train and get the best in men's hair care, beard care soaps, deodorant and cologne.
35:51
Smell like you give a damn with Duke Cannon.
35:54
Work harder, smell better.
35:57
It's tailgating season and Cub Foods is your go-to grocery and liquor store.
36:04
Why scurry around town picking up all your game day needs when you can go to one store?
36:10
Look no further than Cub to grab your hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, chips, veggie platters, deli cold cuts, party trays and desserts all in one place.
36:21
Be sure to hit up Cub Liquor before you head out to grab drinks all your tailgaters are sure to love.
36:28
Go to your local Cub on your next shopping trip for all your tailgating essentials.
36:35
And of course we thank Cub and Duke Cannon for sponsoring The GPL Podcast.
36:42
Gophers heading to Madison this weekend, always a fun weekend, always a big weekend for the fans to head down.
36:48
There's always a ride going on, the GPL message board about taking the road trip.
36:53
So it's always a fun weekend no matter what, but there's also some important hockey to be played.
37:00
Yeah, for sure.
37:01
This is an important segment for Minnesota here to get off to a good start in Big Ten play.
37:05
You know, this team's got aspirations to go far at the end of the season.
37:11
That's kind of the attitude they have, but they're dealing with injuries right now.
37:15
You know, with Cal Thomas out of the lineup, August Balloon is going to be out of the lineup as well for the weekend.
37:21
So Gophers are going to be playing their young guys again.
37:24
I imagine Wisconsin is going to be hungry for this weekend, and the Gophers will get their best game both nights.
37:33
So I think that's going to be a real test for Minnesota.
37:36
I think the Gophers will continue to rotate their goalies with Ari and Sully Airplane.
37:41
And I think it's an opportunity for the power plays to maybe separate from each other.
37:48
And maybe we're going to see some changes with what Bob Mosco is doing out there.
37:52
So important weekend for a lot of players in Minnesota.
37:55
What are your initial thoughts, Todd?
37:59
I think this is a point where Wisconsin has to make something of their home ice.
38:05
I mean, this is a place that has been honestly too easy for teams to come in and play well in so far this season.
38:13
Lindenwood got a shock win in the first game of the season and was close to getting a sweep out of that.
38:21
And Ohio State did get a sweep.
38:23
And this is the new Cole Center rink, right?
38:28
This is the first year it's been 200 by 85 and the results haven't exactly been outstanding for the home team.
38:37
So I think the Badgers need to establish themselves.
38:41
They need to show that the Cole Center is going to be a tough place to play or tougher than it has been anyway.
38:47
And that's got to be one of the big focuses for Wisconsin.
38:50
And I mean, but it comes right back to, you know, somebody's got to step up.
38:56
Somebody's got to score some goals.
38:57
We've got to finish.
38:59
It's fine for them that they're in good spots and everything.
39:05
I don't completely buy into the, you know, well, they're unlucky.
39:09
It's, you know, the bounce will start going their way thing.
39:12
It's some of that's true.
39:13
Absolutely.
39:14
I mean, Rylan Moseley, I wrote a little bit about this story coming tomorrow, had a shot in the slot last Friday night, hit off the knob of the goalie stick.
39:25
So targeted from the top left corner, hit off the, you know, the one inch wide part of the stick, knocks the stick out of the goalie's hands, puck goes over the glass.
39:35
I mean, nine out of 10 times, that's the goal.
39:39
The badgers are just in the one right now.
39:42
And that's kind of the way it's gone for them.
39:45
So, but they, there is a lot more they can be doing in terms of setting things up, in terms of continuing to put pressure on defenses to not get the one and done.
40:00
It's like my casings likes to say a lot.
40:02
They need second and third chances.
40:05
And they just need to be meaner sometimes too.
40:09
That's been some, they can, they've been getting pushed around, especially their top line.
40:13
Teams have been going after Quinn Finley a lot.
40:16
And it's been working.
40:19
I mean, he's been able to get his goals, but last week he was, he wasn't able to get as many good chances as he had been against, because Notre Dame did a pretty good job against him.
40:29
And Denver did, I mean, he scored a couple against Denver, but Denver was up in his face a lot.
40:36
And so, and they're able to do that.
40:38
When there's one line scoring, teams were able to put a lot of pressure on that one line.
40:43
And so they need to spread it out a little bit more.
40:47
They need to get more people involved in getting pucks in the net.
40:50
And Veegs, you've been talking about connecting shifts for years here.
40:55
How important it is.
40:57
And Todd's right on the money there.
40:59
If you're not connecting shifts, you're not going to win games.
41:02
Well, and you've got to make smart puck possession decisions.
41:06
And you've got to make smart decisions on when to change.
41:10
You know, you don't want to just have all three players come off the ice and give the other team a free breakout.
41:15
You want to have someone who can either gain the zone with some possession and slow it down until his other two guys can change.
41:22
Or you want a guy who can, you know, slow down the breakout so his teammates can join the change and apply the pressure.
41:31
And same thing, I think in the third period against Penn State, you saw Minnesota, even though the line chart was all jumbled up as Bob is just throwing out pairs of wings with his forwards, they were connecting shifts wherever he wants.
41:43
Well, you'd maintain possession in the zone and rotate an entire new line onto the ice.
41:50
And when you can do that and get play against tired players, it can be such a big advantage for you.
41:56
And I think veteran teams that are unselfish are able to do that better than most.
42:03
It will be interesting to see how that all turns out.
42:06
One thing I want to talk one more thing about, two more things about Wisconsin.
42:11
Now we got the expert here at Badger Hockey.
42:13
You know, Scarfone got the two starts against your name.
42:17
You know, is that something where it might be his net for this weekend as well?
42:20
Cause we've seen the Gophers, sometimes when they get frustrated with the goalie, they're trying to pick corners.
42:26
Like Saturday, the Gophers missed the net.
42:29
I think like 17 times, you know, their shot total was low, but their shots attempt is pretty decent.
42:34
They were just getting frustrated.
42:36
We saw the same thing against Omaha and Las Vegas, where they're having a hard time scoring.
42:41
So they were just putting almost turnover shots on goal.
42:44
So it'll be interesting to see how they do against Scarfone, who is, you know, kind of a big acquisition for them.
42:50
Yeah.
42:51
And hasn't started anywhere close to the way he wanted to, or that they hoped he would.
42:58
You know, not that he's given up a bunch of bad goals, there's that one save you need them to make in every game, it almost seems like.
43:07
And a lot of the games, they weren't getting that.
43:12
And I got the impression that him playing both games last week was a kind of a sign of where this is going.
43:23
They like William Gramma, but he hasn't necessarily been the answer either.
43:31
So I think he kind of came back to, they brought in Tommy Scarifoni for a reason.
43:38
They gave him a shot to be the number one.
43:40
They need to let him have that.
43:43
And he gave up an overtime goal that wasn't a great one, but it was a shot from the slot.
43:51
It was a kind of an odd man situation on Friday and came back Saturday and was all in all pretty good.
44:00
And I thought that's an important step for him, for him to be able to put together two, not great, but pretty good performances in a row.
44:11
They're gonna need more of that out of him because if you're not scoring goals, you're gonna have to be holding teams down to two goals or less.
44:18
So just no question about that.
44:22
But I was trying to Hey, she really had that though.
44:25
Hastings really knows how to do that.
44:27
Well, I was talking to Eric Shearhorn about goaltending and, you know, if a goalie is coming into a new program with a new coach and doesn't know exactly what he has to do to get the net, it can shake your confidence a little bit and routine saves that you feel like you should make or, you know, trying to figure out how aggressive to be on playing shooters can really get in your head because you start thinking, oh, if I don't make this save, I might not play tomorrow night and then I might not play the next one or the next one.
44:56
You know, there's just that uncertainty that can creep into a goalie.
45:00
And so I'm wondering how Hastings is handling that at Wisconsin because at Minnesota, it seems pretty clear that both goalies are going to play Friday, Saturday, at least through maybe Michigan, Michigan State.
45:12
You know, both goalies know that they're going to get a chance.
45:14
So I think they're playing pretty free mentally.
45:18
He Hastings said last week, yeah, that they started giving some more individual goalie coach time for Scarifonia and Grandma.
45:35
And he said on his radio show last week, too, you know, Brian Posig asked him, you know, that Anton Castro, the third goalie, you know, is a freshman, played for Fargo last season, kind of in a backup role there, or, you know, a less prominent role.
45:52
Is there a chance he gets some time here?
45:54
And Hastings basically said, yeah, we might need him to, because if we're not going to get what we need out of these other two guys, we're going to have to look somewhere else.
46:04
And I mean, that all gets back to people, that everyone's going to hear that.
46:09
I'm sure, I'm sure that wasn't the first time he said that.
46:12
I'm sure that was said in, you know, in some meetings with the goalies too.
46:17
So, it's, you know, lighting a fire under some guys' work sometimes.
46:23
And I think that it did get put to a point where, I think last week, look, we're going to give you this chance.
46:30
Let's see what you do with it.
46:31
And here comes another one this week, and it's not going to get any easier.
46:35
So, let's see how that turns out.
46:38
And Veegs, we've also seen it where it fires up the team in front of them too, to play better, to do smarter things, to help their goalie be successful.
46:47
Yeah, I mean, that can happen.
46:49
I just think it can sometimes be hard when you have a new person in your program.
46:53
And how connected are you?
46:54
I think that can always be a question mark.
46:57
But the Gopher Goaltending has been good.
46:59
Doesn't sound like the Wisconsin Goaltending has been as good as they would hope.
47:03
So something to watch this weekend.
47:05
The other thing I was looking for this weekend is I really like Weston Knox and Logan Hensler, young defenseman.
47:12
It looks like they're getting pretty decent minutes for Wisconsin.
47:14
What are your impressions on them so far?
47:18
Well, Knox got kind of thrown in to things.
47:22
So that was after, let's see, I'm trying to keep all the defenseman injuries together here.
47:30
Schultz went out after the first week of the season.
47:33
He's missed the last six games.
47:36
And then last week, I think Herd didn't travel, so he was the second one out.
47:43
Joe Plotichuk got injured in the Friday game.
47:46
So they played most of the series without him.
47:49
And then Henselur got hurt in the Saturday game.
47:53
So Plotichuk is out this week.
47:58
I should have written this down.
47:59
I've got to read this.
48:01
It's early in the week.
48:02
It's Wednesday.
48:03
So I believe Carrer is looking good from what Hastings said yesterday.
48:12
And there's question marks about Schultz and Henselur.
48:16
So I mean, Henselur is really good.
48:19
I mean, he's a little bit raw still.
48:21
He's just turned 18 year old freshman.
48:27
But you can see the skills that are there.
48:29
And that, you know, most of the time, the mentality is right.
48:38
He's making the right plays.
48:39
There's a couple of those couple of times here and there.
48:42
And you expect it out of a young freshman, defenseman especially, where it's just the decision wasn't right.
48:48
And then so you wonder whether he starts to get the confidence shaken a little bit.
48:52
But he's been able to overcome those from what I've been able to see.
48:56
And I think that's probably why he's projected to be such a high pick is that, you know, when you've got the skills and you've got the understanding that, okay, I screwed that up.
49:06
Well, forget it and move on to the next one.
49:08
That's a real mature thing for a defenseman.
49:14
But Knox got thrown in because he hadn't played much.
49:17
He was basically at the bottom of the eight person D chart, but got put in last week and, I mean, did a pretty good job.
49:27
You know, they asked him to do a lot.
49:28
There was one point where there was a penalty kill.
49:33
And because of guys being shifted around, it was Jack Horbach, who's normally a forward who's playing D.
49:42
But things got moved around.
49:43
I think someone was in the box.
49:45
That's normally a penalty killer.
49:46
And so two of the four on the ice were Weston Knox, freshman, not normally in the lineup, but you know, doing a pretty good job when called on.
49:56
And Luke Buss, who was playing his first game, basically was started the season as the number 15 forward.
50:03
So it got to that point where they're like, look, this is what we have to roll with and let's see what happens.
50:09
And it turned out okay for him.
50:11
But yeah, I think Henselers got a real strong future and they're gonna need Knox, you know, with the injuries that they've had to kind of solidify things and it looks like he can do that.
50:30
I don't know what the high end is there, but he can be a kind of a dependable guy that you can put out there and not have to worry too much about, I guess.
50:42
Both games on Big Ten Plus only this weekend, along with radio, we're hearing people complain about it.
50:51
Doesn't this have something to do with some of the issues with Valley Sports Wisconsin back in the last couple of years?
50:57
And obviously that was happening here and there's kind of no place to really put the Badgers on local TV.
51:03
I'm not really sure.
51:04
What's the whole situation with that?
51:06
Well, how much time do we have?
51:10
I feel like, yeah, there's a multi-leveled answer to this, but yes, let's go back to the...
51:16
Basically, Wisconsin's contract with Valleys ran out.
51:19
Valleys originally being Fox Sports Wisconsin.
51:23
Yeah, I assume it was originally that when it was agreed to.
51:30
And because of the bankruptcy situation that Valleys was in, they couldn't sign new contracts or that's at least what I was told.
51:39
So that left that as not an option.
51:45
Wisconsin absolutely could have done what Minnesota did when turned to a local channel and try to set up a deal with...
51:55
Basically, you have to set up the production side of it and you have to set up the distribution side of it.
51:59
So the production side of it is there are companies that basically run the cameras, run the boards, run all this stuff, and then the distribution is what channel is it go on.
52:09
So those are two different sides of the equation here.
52:13
And it just sounded like they were, from people I talked to, that there wasn't much interest on either side for either Wisconsin paying to get those put on TV or local channels having interest in committing to a certain number of games as part of a package that could get sold with advertising.
52:38
Part of the problem here, and this is, I should apologize in advance.
52:44
I don't, this is outdated information, but when I used to hear about television issues, it was because they couldn't sell advertising very well because Madison wasn't a metered market for the ratings.
53:04
And so any ratings that Bally or Fox Sports Wisconsin got were just the Milwaukee ratings.
53:11
And so, you know, that's not the core audience.
53:15
So it does make sense though.
53:17
Well, right.
53:18
And it makes a lot of sense.
53:19
Not as much of an issue in Minneapolis, obviously, because that's the primary.
53:22
You're getting honest numbers out of that.
53:28
And it's a different situation altogether.
53:30
We know it's a different audience you're playing to.
53:35
And so it's been tough to, I guess, market that and put a package together that can excite people without knowing how many people you're actually reaching.
53:51
That's a business though, Veegs.
53:54
I mean, if you're not in a metered market, that's kind of a big deal.
53:57
Whereas here, like Todd said, we are.
54:00
And also, it's a lot less risky for Minnesota to put in that money versus Wisconsin putting that money in for their games to be on local TV.
54:11
And obviously, Minnesota is in a very stable place with their coach, their program, their success.
54:18
And that makes it a little bit easier as well.
54:20
Wisconsin hockey is a little bit more of an unknown right now with my case teams kind of rebuilding things on the fly.
54:28
But we're going to keep pushing Big Ten plus folks.
54:30
We've been telling you about it for years.
54:32
It's going to become more and more important.
54:35
Can I say something about that?
54:39
There's been a lot of people that...
54:41
And I don't fault people for saying this about complaining about the announcers on Big Ten plus.
54:48
They're college kids.
54:51
They're doing...
54:52
They're learning.
54:53
I mean, I understand you're paying for it.
54:56
It's a product.
54:56
It should be a good product.
54:58
I have issues with the video quality on a lot of things.
55:02
Ohio State games drive me insane.
55:07
But I would ask people to give them some grace.
55:14
Yes, they're trying.
55:16
They're doing what they can.
55:18
I don't know how much coaching they get.
55:20
Honestly, I've never actually asked them, you know, do you get feedback?
55:24
Do you have someone that's working with you?
55:29
Sounds like a potential news story for Todd later in the year.
55:34
All right, let me add it to my list here.
55:37
It's a big list.
55:39
But I understand that there's frustration there because it doesn't sound like a game that you see on TBS or ESPN or NHL network or anything like that.
55:52
Or even the radio broadcasts with Minnesota and Wisconsin have two of the best teams of radio personnel that I know and that's...
56:09
Yeah, I would really love for people to lay off those guys because they're trying.
56:16
I'm with you on that.
56:17
People don't realize how spoiled we've been here in Minnesota with MSC, Fox Sports North, their coverage of the Final Five.
56:25
The people that are behind the scenes that are producing this are the top of the top.
56:35
Oh my gosh, somebody's screaming and doing something weird.
56:38
Yeah, you can poke a little fun at them.
56:40
That's fine.
56:41
But yeah, I'm with you on the just keep ragging on them because it's like you could be seeing nothing.
56:48
You could be getting no broadcasts.
56:50
I'm fine with it.
56:51
So I do have to say the Peacock broadcasts are great.
56:55
They do a great job with that.
56:57
And as you'd expect with being an NBC Peacock level production, just watch those games that Wisconsin's games at Notre Dame last week.
57:06
And that's, that's always a, I mean, from the video side, from the announce, it's, it's all a high level production there.
57:16
Can't disagree with you.
57:17
Can't disagree with you, but it's what we've got.
57:20
And I will be tuned to it Friday and Saturday nights.
57:24
This weekend, Veegs, what's your prediction?
57:28
I think this is not as easy.
57:30
Some people think they were going to be, oh, Minnesota is going to go on and sweep them.
57:33
I don't think it's that simple.
57:35
Yeah.
57:35
I think Wisconsin's better than their record.
57:38
And I feel like Minnesota is kind of in a little bit of a stage right now where every team is starting to figure out how to play and the ice is getting tighter and defenses are playing more effectively.
57:55
All that summer hockey is now gone.
57:57
And we are in the college hockey right now where it's real tough and it's tough to sweep, even tougher on the road.
58:03
So I think this weekend we might see one of those splits.
58:07
Todd, your thoughts?
58:09
Everything's telling me that the Gophers are going to sweep this, which is probably means it's not going to happen.
58:15
But that's the way the rivalries series go, right?
58:19
You expect one thing, you don't necessarily get it.
58:23
I went looking through the numbers, Badgers and Gophers in November in Madison.
58:27
This is one of those things that everyone wants to be the team that hosts this series in the second half of the season because you get better attendance.
58:36
There's more in the line, there's a little more juice in the building, right?
58:40
But it's been at the Cole Center in November six times since Cole Center opened in 1998 for hockey.
58:50
The last four of them have been split.
58:52
So I think that, and those have been some different levels.
58:59
Minnesota generally has been probably pretty consistent through those.
59:03
Wisconsin has been all over the place in terms of where they've been as a program, but they've always managed to show up for at least one of the games in a lot of these Gopher series early in the season.
59:18
And I expect them to be pretty ready to go for this.
59:26
Although we talked to Simon Tassi yesterday, and he was really downplaying the, or kind of going with the, we want to tune out all the noise element of this, which is not always what you hear from all the special players.
59:40
That's what you hear from a Mike Hastings player.
59:42
It is probably on the board.
59:44
Absolutely.
59:44
To tune out the noise.
59:46
It is, absolutely.
59:47
And so we'll see how much that actually happens because the noise gets pretty loud around this.
59:54
I mean, even if you don't, if you're not from Minnesota, not from Wisconsin, you know what this means.
1:00:03
So should be some, a couple of pretty good crowds from what I hear.
1:00:08
Not, you know, the 15,000s that we used to have for these kind of things.
1:00:13
But it's also, you know, November.
1:00:18
It's not necessarily the time of the year people are fired up about hockey here.
1:00:24
So which is a challenge for all of us, I should say.
1:00:30
I'm not predicting a sweep.
1:00:32
I'm predicting Minnesota four points, Badgers two.
1:00:38
Badgers get an overtime victory one of these evenings.
1:00:40
So that's what I'm thinking.
1:00:43
I thought you were going to go with shootout because.
1:00:47
Well, if it gets to shootout, we know the Badgers are going to win.
1:00:53
Minnesota's twice in the history of shootouts of winning in the Big Ten play.
1:01:02
Two in 15.
1:01:07
I looked at some odds on the DraftKings.
1:01:09
Minnesota minus 298, Wisconsin plus 220.
1:01:14
That's a pretty big money line for Minnesota.
1:01:18
There's probably some pizza money value for Jim Connelly and his cronies over at UCHO on this game.
1:01:24
The thing I'm watching for this weekend, I thought the Gopher defense has been jumpy in the play terrifically when they've had opportunities all season.
1:01:32
They weren't able to do that against Penn State because Penn State was so disciplined with numbers back.
1:01:39
And as you look ahead, the Gopher defenseman talked about counting what's in front of them.
1:01:45
And I just didn't think the chances really presented themselves for the Gophers to join the rush against Penn State, maybe against Wisconsin.
1:01:53
That's something where we see a return of that.
1:01:57
All right, Todd, what are you working on this week?
1:01:59
What's your plan for Friday morning in your preview?
1:02:03
Any thoughts?
1:02:04
Any hints of what you're thinking?
1:02:06
I have a story that will be posting Thursday morning.
1:02:10
It should be in Friday's paper about kind of looking at five things that have led to a two and six start.
1:02:22
And a, well, I kind of stumbled across this.
1:02:28
In 2006, 07, my casings was coach at Omaha and USHL.
1:02:32
They started one, five and one.
1:02:36
Ended up 38, 17 and five, won the West Division, one point out of the overall league regular season championship.
1:02:47
So this is someone that knows how to, you know, take a start of a season and ball it up and throw it away or use it for what you need to use it for.
1:03:00
So I asked them what has to happen.
1:03:05
For that to happen here.
1:03:06
Not necessarily that number, but just the kind of, okay, so this happened, big deal.
1:03:11
Forget it, move on.
1:03:13
Win your next one.
1:03:16
And he said it had to be about the players continuing to buy in, even though there hasn't been a lot of evidence to support the belief yet.
1:03:25
I mean, they got some of it last Saturday.
1:03:29
But you have to continue to think you're good enough to do this.
1:03:33
You have to continue to believe that you're doing the right things to eventually get you some success.
1:03:40
And we'll find out.
1:03:42
You can say all you want there, but we'll find out.
1:03:44
They say the room is still there.
1:03:48
There's nobody jumping ship or anything like that.
1:03:52
I mean, I've heard that for years with a lot of teams here that certainly had.
1:03:59
So I don't know.
1:04:00
We will find that's one thing that you can't give an answer to until you see the results.
1:04:04
And it's that's one of those things that's going to keep me keep me interested in going going through this year.
1:04:12
Any final thoughts, Veegs?
1:04:15
Looking forward to some hockey and trying to save my outdoor rinks in Minneapolis.
1:04:21
Yeah, get it done, dude.
1:04:23
Get her done working on it, working on it.
1:04:25
Well, thanks for coming on the show, Todd.
1:04:27
Any time you're ready for a bit of overtime.
1:04:30
