Come on.
0:24
Now, here's Joop and Vigo.
0:37
Good evening, and welcome to The GPL Podcast, episode number 182.
0:47
Well, it's Badger Week, and whenever it's Badger Week, we always bring in our favorite Badger reporter, Todd Milewski.
0:54
Todd, thanks for joining us again.
0:56
Hey, I would, at this point, I would probably be offended if I didn't make an invitation on a Badger Gopher Week, right?
1:06
Yeah.
1:07
No, but no, thanks, I do appreciate you reaching out.
1:11
I'd have to check.
1:12
This is always fun, so I love doing this.
1:15
I'd have to check, but I think you're actually moving up the number of times you've been a guest.
1:19
You're getting, I think Frank Mazzocco's the top, and I could check, but you're getting close to tying him, and so you go twice a year now, so.
1:34
Hey, it's a big rivalry.
1:37
Any list I can be on with Frank, I don't need to be passing Frank, but I think we're going to need to have our SNL host type thing, so it'll be Gatham's dad, so you're approaching the Steve Martin territory.
1:51
Yeah, the five-time club.
1:53
The five-timers.
1:54
Five-time club, right.
1:57
Well, Veegs, how are you doing?
1:59
You're doing good, too.
1:59
You just had a birthday this weekend.
2:01
You got a nice birthday gift, didn't you, Veegs?
2:04
I did get a nice birthday gift.
2:06
I was hoping for a USA-Canada game.
2:09
I wasn't going to get greedy and hope for the US team to win, but it was an amazing performance by them, and congrats on the gold for the boys.
2:19
As you can see if you're watching, I've got the old USA jersey in the corner here in honor of the gold medal, and it was thanks to quite a few Gophers and BADgers, BADgers on the offense, Gophers on the defense, Todd, that mightily contributed to this gold medal.
2:37
I was surprised as well, but in that gold medal game, it seemed like they withstood that first 10 minutes, because that first 10 minutes, they did nothing.
2:48
They just kind of, okay, didn't have the crowd against them, and then they finally got into the game, and they shut out the Canadians.
2:57
Well, that was the thing, right?
2:58
That Canada had been so strong coming out of the gate in every game they played so far to that point.
3:06
So what was that push going to be like, knowing that, I mean, when you're Canada in a gold medal game of the World Juniors, there's some expectations from an entire country, right?
3:19
Plus, you're in your own country.
3:22
There were no fans.
3:23
But that expectation level has got to be like up here.
3:28
There's some serious pressure on that.
3:32
Right.
3:32
Yeah, there is.
3:33
And the kids.
3:34
So if they score early, that turns down a little bit, maybe, and they get, you know, they feel a little bit more comfortable.
3:42
This is like every other game they've played so far.
3:46
But yeah, the US did a good enough job of, you know, just pushing them outside.
3:52
And hanging on in the beginning.
3:54
Yeah.
3:57
And so, yeah, none of it was pretty, I don't think.
4:00
But isn't that good enough?
4:04
I mean, does it matter?
4:06
Well, Veegs, you know, they came in.
4:08
Canada hadn't given up a five on five goal.
4:10
They hadn't lost.
4:11
They hadn't been losing or been losing in the entire tournament.
4:17
Some say maybe their schedule was a little soft.
4:21
I would disagree.
4:22
They did shut off the Russians.
4:24
Didn't they shut out the Russians the night before?
4:26
Yeah, but I don't think the Russian team this year was as good as the Russian team usually is.
4:31
They had some COVID issues with their team selection and things like that.
4:35
I think what happened to Team Canada is they fell into one of those elite team traps where they're so used to scoring on the rush, they're so used to scoring on the power play that when you don't get those chances and you have to create in-zone offense, like get your ground game going, and you're up against another elite team, sometimes you just don't have it.
4:55
Especially with a group like this where they haven't played a lot of games together, that takes a little bit of sequencing.
5:02
I just think they couldn't get over that hump.
5:05
USA, I thought, did a pretty good job of extinguishing plays and relieving pressure.
5:11
But Zegras line was fun to watch.
5:13
I don't think they played hardly any shifts in their own D-zone.
5:16
That's so critical for a team to have success, is to have a line like that that's your pressure release.
5:22
Then everybody gets on the same page.
5:23
And they didn't score pretty goals.
5:27
But that's just like, who cares if it's a pretty goal?
5:29
It's a goal.
5:29
It's winning hockey.
5:32
That's so true.
5:33
And Todd, like you said, they started slowly, but then they got some puck possession, and then they had some puck possession in the Canadian zone.
5:40
And then they got that goal.
5:42
And then that's what just, that was it.
5:43
It was really a 50-50 game the rest of the game once that happened.
5:49
It was those top two lines back to back on that first goal.
5:53
The line with Coffield on it, kind of set it up, had a good 30, 45 seconds in the zone, got off and for the Zegras line, man, that was one of those where every time you felt Canada had something coming, it didn't go in, but that one you did feel coming for the US.
6:14
Yes.
6:16
It was there and they actually just popped it in.
6:18
But yeah, I mean, two games in a row, Alex Turcotte scored the first goal for them, which was, I mean, for a guy that's not, I mean, he had a World Juniors last year, Hitman Caulfield that, you know, not very memorable for either one of them.
6:36
So for Turcotte to kind of turn that around and score that big of a goal in the gold medal game, I know he's, you know, that's huge for him.
6:47
I mean, now he goes to LA and tries to make that opening night roster.
6:54
But yeah, what a finish for him to end up with the tournament with three goals, but I mean, two pretty important ones in back to back games.
7:03
He did get banged up a little bit in the game.
7:04
He came back out.
7:05
So that was nice to see as well.
7:07
But really, Veegs, I guess you could say that the ultimate story was the goaltending by night.
7:15
You know, he had a rough start at the tournament.
7:19
But ever since that first Russian game, holy cow, was he good.
7:25
Yeah, that first night, it seemed like he was trying to do too much.
7:28
And he was just kind of giving the game away.
7:31
And I think having a night off to watch and kind of get back in the atmosphere really helped him.
7:37
And he was lights out when the team needed him.
7:39
You know, he's a big athletic goalie.
7:41
I think coming in the tournament, you thought Askarov for Russia, Knight for the US are the two top goalies.
7:47
And they're really going to decide what happens here from that standpoint in terms of who could maybe give Canada a run.
7:54
And Knight came through for the US.
7:57
It was kind of interesting to see Askarov watch Finland get their medals when he went home empty handed because he did not have a good World Junior last year either.
8:05
So I think for him, that was kind of a tough, tough game to handle because he didn't have a great team in front of him.
8:13
You know, obviously we've got 1980 gold Russians, communists, blah, blah, blah.
8:19
But boy, I think it's a lot funner these days to beat the Canadians, Todd.
8:25
It's just, it's fun.
8:28
It was going through my head during that game that, you know, I think a lot of people thought that was Canada's game to lose.
8:36
That the way they had set everything up, they hadn't shown a lot of weakness, especially, I mean, maybe in a couple of games where it was out of hand and they could afford it.
8:47
But then the US scores and it's like, you know, draw goes cut.
8:56
That's what popped into my head is like, oh, well, we haven't seen this.
9:00
So let's see where this goes.
9:02
And we saw where it went.
9:05
But yeah, those US and Canada games, I mean, that tournament is, I mean, you can pick your game, pick your match up.
9:15
And it's like there's something exciting about almost all of them now, which is pretty cool.
9:20
And especially this year where there's no other hockey going on those couple of days.
9:25
You know, in college, obviously there was some stuff going on around it.
9:29
But man, that you're never get, let's hope.
9:35
Let's hope we don't ever get anything like that again, where the NHL isn't playing during that time.
9:39
And we've got no fans in the crowd.
9:42
But man, it's never going to be like that again.
9:44
So I mean, to have the US win it in those circumstances too, when you know everyone's watching, pretty good.
9:50
I think it would be kind of cool for the NHL to recognize how big these games are and put that semifinal and Gold Medal night as nights where the NHL is off.
10:02
So they can really focus on the next wave of talent coming through.
10:07
Because when I think of the USA-Canada matchups, just think of how many draft picks now are playing on both sides of the ice.
10:14
It used to be Canada would have all the talent and high end picks.
10:18
Now the US has almost as many picks as Canada.
10:22
And it's a real fun event to watch for that.
10:25
It kind of reminded me of some of those North Dakota Gopher games.
10:28
Where you've got five or six first round picks against five or six first round picks and they're at Excel and it's a big stage.
10:36
And it just gets you excited for the game to see that talent play against each other.
10:42
Well, it's nothing but fun.
10:44
It's just good fun hockey.
10:48
And I don't have the NHL Network anymore, but I did find a couple of nice feeds on YouTube that allowed me to watch the final game.
10:58
That's something we've got to get fixed, by the way.
11:00
I do have NHL Network on my cable package, but I can't watch it on my computer.
11:06
I can't be out of the house watching it on my phone.
11:08
Come on, NHB Network does such a good job with things.
11:14
And they're in the same building as NHL Network.
11:16
They're run by the same people.
11:18
Let's get this together and get it figured out and get all of that.
11:22
Well, let's talk about that TV.
11:24
We obviously heard the Fox Sports North and Wisconsin, kind of the big regional networks, announced their plans for games.
11:33
Gophers are going to get 10 games.
11:34
And obviously, Wisconsin is part of that, and you've kind of got your own package as well.
11:40
But the big thing around here, Todd, is that everyone's losing FSN.
11:45
We don't get FSN anymore.
11:48
You know, Dish Network dropped them.
11:49
People who were streaming on YouTube, streaming on Hulu, dropped there.
11:54
Now everyone's like, we want the games on the Big Ten Network, all the games on the Big Ten Network.
11:58
Whereas before, no, no, no, let's get it back on FSN.
12:01
And it's just this back and forth.
12:04
And Veegs, I see you smiling because it's just, you know, the people are getting exactly what they wanted.
12:10
They're getting a lot of FSN games.
12:12
And boy, because FSN is now under new ownership, they've lost quite a few carriage deals.
12:20
Right.
12:21
This is almost what the fans have asked for, is get all the games on FSN.
12:25
And I think part of that loyalty is why Sinclair may be overpaid for the package.
12:31
And now they're in this position where they got to come up with the money and probably the hardest economy to come up for money in this day and age because we don't know what sports are going to look like.
12:40
They have all the cancellations, the shortened seasons.
12:44
It's probably pretty frustrating for them, but this is the hand that's been dealt.
12:49
And if you're a fan, you got to figure out a way to watch it.
12:52
I know we've had people who've been telling us that you can log in to some of the Fox Sports apps and use your Hulu or YouTube credentials to get into that system to maybe stream the games.
13:03
You can get into the Big Ten Plus and stream the games, but it's getting more and more complicated for smaller sports to figure this out.
13:12
You know, I don't think Big Ten Hockey is ever going to be a ratings driver at this point for hockey.
13:18
You know, wrestling and gymnastics and volleyball sometimes compete just as well at the ratings for Big Ten Hockey.
13:25
So it's a difficult situation, I think, for everybody.
13:28
And you know, I think we're hearing it because Minnesota hasn't lost a game yet.
13:33
And is your Fox Sports Wisconsin one of those networks that may get some kind of Bally's name or some kind of gambling name?
13:41
We're hearing that this spring that some of these networks, these regional networks are going casino on us.
13:48
Yeah, I haven't heard anything specific about Wisconsin on that one.
13:51
But I mean, if it's all the same package, you have to imagine there's some kind of you know, they would want it to be consistently marketed, right?
13:59
Where, you know, for the same reason why it's Fox Sports, this Fox Sports side, you know, I know there are a few different ones in that family that are named somewhat differently.
14:09
I don't exactly remember which ones are owned by which companies anymore.
14:13
But I feel like that, you know, Wisconsin has, you know, there's been, you know, interest in sports gambling here, but the government officials have shut that down pretty quickly.
14:29
So similar to here, similar to here.
14:32
I don't know if they see an outlet for legal sports gambling here, but maybe that's not even the point anymore.
14:39
It's just the, you know, promoting the idea of that.
14:43
There's sports gambling going on somewhere and you can probably make it work.
14:50
If you make a run over the border to, I don't know, to Iowa here, you can get there in an hour and a half, two hours and throw everything down at the sports book there.
14:59
That just opened over the border.
15:01
I wish I knew what the strategy was there behind the naming, but there have been worse things named around the country lately, probably than after sports betting.
15:22
I don't really know what to think anymore with those weeks.
15:24
I mean, I'm guessing schools like the University of Minnesota is not high on having their games, well, hockey games, on Valley Sports Network.
15:35
I think right now, athletic departments are trying to figure out how to rub two pennies together and figure out their budget.
15:42
I mean, we've seen that right now at the University of Minnesota.
15:45
They're going to start allowing some alcohol sponsorships.
15:48
You know, how much they go to Anheuser-Busch and how much they go to, you know, local, Surly and Summit for advertising revenue and partnerships.
15:56
But they're looking for it.
15:57
You know, even if it's going to be, you know, $300, $400,000 a year, you know, they're trying to figure out ways to solve their budget holes because they can't go in the red.
16:07
They're either going to have to take loans out to balance their budgets or do furloughs.
16:11
And so they're just doing what they can to get their TV contracts fulfilled.
16:16
And keep the lights on.
16:20
Keeping the lights on.
16:23
Well, we need to recap a little bit what happened this past weekend, or past week.
16:29
Let's just say the most recent two games since, you know, we even heard some of the news conference today, you know, oh, the Saturday game, we did this.
16:37
And Jess Meyer is like, wasn't that the Monday game?
16:43
We're all accustomed to it, so we understand it.
16:45
But Minnesota, they did keep their undefeated streak going, Veegs.
16:50
That's good.
16:52
They faced a lot more adversity, gave up the first goal, gave up their first lead, gave up their first power, a couple of power play goals this weekend, and actually were losing in both games.
17:04
I think there was actually a lot of good with this weekend, because they did face some of that adversity that we hadn't really seen yet.
17:13
Yeah, it was a weekend where they're still trying to figure things out.
17:18
Despite the record, this team does have some holes to it.
17:22
They've been pretty fortunate, I think, with the amazing goal tending they've gotten from Lafontaine.
17:27
Their power play has produced very well.
17:30
Their penalty kill has been really difficult to score against.
17:34
And then this past weekend, we saw some of the holes show up during the game where they got scored on.
17:41
And I think sometimes when you're dealing with college kids, until you can show them that what they're doing is wrong and it results in a goal against or some great chances against, it's hard to get through to them that what they need to do is important.
17:56
So I think it's important for this team to go through that step of seeing some failure and how to correct it and why what they do is important.
18:04
And I also think it was a good weekend because I think Coach Motzko got a hold of Bryce Brudzinski a little bit and got his attention by putting him on the fourth line in the first game and then as the extra skater in the next.
18:17
And he answered the bell a little bit.
18:18
He looked a little bit more engaged.
18:19
Maybe found some magic playing with Ben Myers and Blake McLaughlin and maybe got McLaughlin going a little bit too.
18:26
I mean, I'd love to play with Ben Myers.
18:29
He's a pretty easy guy to play with.
18:30
So maybe that's the answer there.
18:32
And then when you've got the Ranta-Rini line going like they are, you could probably put anybody with them and they'd be okay.
18:38
So maybe the team is starting to figure some pieces out.
18:43
Well, one thing we did see, Veegs, is Minnesota got LaCrosse gold or Michigan again.
18:54
I would say this is much more difficult goal, much more pretty goal than that original one.
18:59
The original Michigan one, though, was pressure situation was way higher.
19:04
But boy, Johnny Walker from Arizona State, get the puck, bounces off the back of the goalie, on the back of the backboard, comes out, bounce right to him.
19:14
He just smoothly just picks it right up, boom.
19:18
I don't know, we're not going to see a better goal in college hockey this year.
19:21
I'm a little bit on the flip side.
19:23
I think Johnny Walker maybe lucked out with how the puck was bouncing.
19:27
And then as it was on his stick, like laying flat, he's like, oh, I'm just going to lacrosse it.
19:33
I don't know if he's got a lacrosse background or anything like that, but it almost looked like, he's just like, oh, well, of course I'm going to do this.
19:41
You know, he's like, that's the best way to score.
19:43
Oh yeah, there's obviously luck there.
19:45
I mean, there's luck in all of that.
19:48
You know, the timing, where you are, things like that.
19:51
And yes, you know, when he did put his stick on it, the puck was already flat.
19:54
He didn't have to pick it up.
19:56
He didn't really have to do much.
19:56
It was just balancing it just right, you know.
19:58
He was able to do it with the one motion.
20:00
Oh yes.
20:01
Mike Legg had to do it, you know, and Smetchikov, they have to do the dip down, so you know what's happening at that point, right?
20:08
You don't necessarily know what Walker was doing when he gets the puck.
20:13
It happened so fast.
20:14
And it just came around.
20:16
It was so fast.
20:19
And that's why I think Mo kind of give him the benefit of the doubt here.
20:23
You just don't see that coming that quickly.
20:25
Usually, if there's a pause behind the net, they can maybe catch it and figure out what's going on.
20:29
But even he took it the right way after the game when he got it brought up.
20:33
He's like, you know, it'd be really easy to be thinking about that the entire rest of the game, but you just have to let it go and enjoy the moment and focus on the next shot.
20:42
He's got pretty good attitude.
20:43
He got hung out to dry a little bit for his first start.
20:48
You know, look at some of the goals like they just left guys right in the heart of the slot, totally uncovered for two of the goals.
20:55
Then they had to wrap around.
20:56
That last one, he lost a little bit in a struggle, but you know, he did OK for not seeing any action.
21:02
And Todd, Mr.
21:05
Doohy got us again.
21:06
And he was kind of part of that rally, standing right out in front, nobody there.
21:11
He's going to bury it against Minnesota because he always does.
21:15
And the king of the crazy bounces, Sean Doohy, strikes again.
21:20
The puck finds him when it's bouncing weird.
21:25
I don't know how that goes for him, but yeah, that's an interesting story, the way that all turned out for him and how he ended up in Arizona this year.
21:35
But I know that there were some ruffled feathers towards the end of last season with the BADgers and him.
21:46
So if he gets a spot to play and play every night and play in a top line in Arizona, can play golf all year round.
22:00
Are you going to argue with him?
22:01
Are you going to blame him?
22:03
And now he can get another year out of it too because of the way that everything turned out?
22:09
He better get another year.
22:10
You know, spending basically your entire hockey season on the road when you expected to be playing golf and hanging out on the A&G campus as a young athlete.
22:21
He better take advantage of that next year.
22:23
Yeah, I would think so.
22:25
That would make him six years, wouldn't it?
22:29
I don't think he's got the NHL size.
22:32
Did he play full four years at Wisconsin?
22:34
No, no, he only played three.
22:37
Okay, five years.
22:42
That's still a lot.
22:44
And Todd, Veegs and I have been talking about, whenever Minnesota has to get on a visit, we're doing a podcast from Phoenix.
22:51
We're just going to go down there and have a good time.
22:53
Yeah, have to do it up.
22:55
You have to.
22:56
You don't want to be the one, the series that ends up in October either.
23:01
I mean, it kind of needed to be a January, February series.
23:06
Yeah, it could be cold here in October, though I love Minnesota.
23:09
True, true.
23:09
This part of the country, October is just the best.
23:12
As long as we don't get snow, I love October.
23:14
The golf game might still be sharp in October.
23:17
We'll see.
23:19
There you go.
23:24
Oh, boy.
23:26
What can we do?
23:26
Well, one thing we need to do is we need to hear from our sponsor.

24:20
This is not an offer to lock into an interest rate agreement under Minnesota law.
24:24
First class mortgage is an equal housing lender.
24:30
All right, of course, we thank Jerry for sponsoring the podcast.
24:34
I'm looking through the questions, and I think someone's giving you a hard time here, Todd.
24:38
Big bucks guy.
24:40
When will Todd start covering a real team?
24:42
I was going to reply to that with a soprano.
24:53
What do you mean cover a real team?
24:54
What can I do?
24:56
You're covering a team.
24:57
That's what you do.
24:58
You cover them with their good, their bad, their evil or great, you know, whatever.
25:02
Bob thinks this is a good team you're covering this year.
25:06
Wisconsin is dangerous this year.
25:08
They're in second place.
25:09
They're not bad.
25:10
I mean, you compared last year to this year.
25:16
And last year has the show, right?
25:18
You've got Turcott, Caulfield, Holloway, Miller, Calnug on the rise.
25:27
And you think, well, this is the team that's got to do something finally for the BADgers.
25:32
And obviously it didn't end up that way.
25:34
And then you're thinking, well, these guys are gone.
25:37
And what's left?
25:39
Well, what's left is a more balanced team that knows how to and a little bit older that knows it has to work a little bit harder for what it wants.
25:50
And I think they took that to heart over the off season, whatever the off season was for a lot of those guys, because it's weird for everyone.
25:58
But there's a little bit more grit in the game from them this year than last year when it was the Flash.
26:10
So that's not saying they don't have talent.
26:16
I mean, you put Caulfield and Holloway out there, and Sam Stang is a really good young guy.
26:23
He's going to be good in a few years.
26:24
And the depth that they have, the older guys that they can put out there, it's a pretty good group.
26:34
I mean, what I wanted to see at the start of the season to know whether they're going to have a chance is if they had better goaltending.
26:44
Because let's face it, that has been a sore spot for years with the BADgers, which is hard to understand because it had been a bright spot for so many years before that.
26:55
Decades.
26:56
Sure.
26:57
Right.
26:58
Decades.
27:00
And they just hadn't found the right pieces to be.
27:05
I don't even want to say they needed someone to be a superstar in gold.
27:10
They needed someone to have a 900 save percentage and just get over that.
27:16
And they hadn't been able to do that in four and five years now.
27:20
So that was the big question I had.
27:25
I think a lot of people had was, could they at least get that level of goaltending?
27:29
And so far they have.
27:30
So does it continue?
27:32
We've seen it before where they have a good first half and then fall off the deep end second half.
27:39
So who knows where it goes from here?
27:42
But yeah, I mean, they're a team that's going to be in the mix as we start the second half here.
27:49
And then who knows how long it goes, but I feel like the way the Big Ten is that everyone's going to beat each other up again as usual.
27:58
And this may end up being like one of those years, you know, depending on where the Gophers go from here, like Notre Dame's first year in the Big Ten, where one team separates itself out and everyone else is fighting for those next six spots.
28:13
Veegs and I were actually talking at the beginning of last year how we actually were very, we thought the BADgers would kind of be a lot better than they thought, obviously it didn't happen that way, but they also, you know, they started much earlier last year.
28:29
They had that early, they had that international, some kind of tournament that they have where, you know, they got to play, they played way early.
28:36
So they kind of got a team going long before anyone else.
28:40
And we were kind of both surprised at what happened, you know, after that, because, you know, they had that extra time to gel that all the other schools didn't get.
28:50
I felt like they got off to a pretty good start last year, but as the season wore on, you just saw so many mistakes and players who were not invested.
29:02
You know, coaches talk a lot, win face-offs, block shots, you know, play physical, be difficult to play against, don't commit turnovers at the pool lines.
29:11
And when you watch Wisconsin that second half last year, you didn't see a lot of that.
29:15
They just didn't seem engaged in playing winning hockey.
29:20
They were out there looking to, I don't know, develop their skills and be ready to sign pro contracts and looking ahead rather than embracing the game right now.
29:30
And I think that's one of the things at Minnesota that's flipped, where a couple years ago we saw Minnesota on the other end of that, where players were not engaged in doing the things that it takes to play winning hockey.
29:41
Players were developing, they were scoring points, they were going on to play pro hockey, but they weren't successful to get over the hump.
29:48
And you just got to have that right mix of talent and grit to be a good hockey team and college hockey.
29:55
And I think having those older players who've been through it, it can sink in a little bit more.
30:00
And they can be the vocal players on your team that get everybody to elevate that part of their game.
30:06
Todd, do you think that could have been some of the issues with Sean Doogie?
30:10
You know, he's one of those guys.
30:11
It's like, obviously, he's a team guy, and maybe he wasn't seeing that by a lot of the youngsters last year.
30:21
I think there was a couple of issues there.
30:26
While it's never been told to me this way directly, I've heard kind of through some different channels that there was a blowing up in the last series of the regular season at Ohio State between Doogie and the coaching staff in the locker room.
30:44
And it got to be where I don't think anyone thought it was a tenable situation after that.
30:53
Because he was coming back from an injury, and he was supposed to be able to play that weekend.
31:00
And Tony Grano told me that week, before that weekend, yeah, he's going to play, we need him in the lineup.
31:05
Well, they were on a little bit of a mini roll.
31:08
They had just swept Arizona State, I think, at home.
31:12
They went in there, and I think they won the first night.
31:17
And so they wanted to keep what they had going into the playoffs, and so they didn't put Dougie into the lineup.
31:24
And well, that obviously doesn't feel good when you're a junior and your coach tells you, yeah, you're going to play, and then, no, you don't end up going in.
31:36
So there was that dynamic to it.
31:37
And yeah, I mean, I do think there were guys that didn't have that team mentality.
31:45
I don't know if he was one of them, because he always, he was the first to point fingers at himself when there was a problem.
31:53
So at least with us in the media.
31:56
And so I didn't see that directly out of him.
32:02
But you never know what things are going on inside the room or when guys are just, you know, three or four of them are together and talking about other guys.
32:14
There could have been something there.
32:16
I don't know that for sure.
32:16
But yeah, there were guys that did not buy into it.
32:21
The team concept, like Vig was talking about being different now for the Gophers that hard to win like that over a long, over a six month season.
32:31
You can win like that in stretches where you have talent and you beat another team.
32:35
But to do that consistently and to keep that going over a long stretch, that's tough.
32:42
And I think too sometimes players and coaches get in this point where there's different rules for different players.
32:49
There are different expectations for other players.
32:52
So you can see a kid who's a first or second on draft pick maybe get a little more slack than somebody else or, you know, keep getting power play time when maybe they're not producing and the other players are thinking that should be my spot.
33:04
He's not getting it done.
33:06
Why does he get this much slack and I don't get any?
33:09
You know, you get these conflicts that come up and it can be a wedge, especially if, you know, you're going up and down our roller coaster season and that makes it difficult.
33:20
It does indeed.
33:22
But one thing, as a fan, we always like want the BADgers to stink.
33:30
To an extent, to an extent.
33:32
But that's just it, to an extent because when, you know, when all of us think of the big picture, we need the Gophers to be good.
33:39
We need the BADgers to be good.
33:41
We need Michigan to be good in the Big Ten.
33:44
We need those three traditional teams to be good in the Big Ten for the Big Ten to start getting some gravitas because, you know, that's one of the things.
33:55
Oh, the Big Ten, they still stink.
33:56
You know, they don't.
33:58
But we kind of need one of those powerful Michigan teams, Minnesota teams, Wisconsin teams again, to bring some of that gravitas back.
34:10
I think we see in a lot of areas of our society today that false narratives take hold and they are incredibly difficult to shake.
34:21
That's all I'm going to say in that direction.
34:26
But I'm spinning that in that for years since 2013, people have wanted to take shots at the Big Ten, right?
34:36
Because what have you guys done?
34:39
Where are your national championships?
34:42
You're getting one team in the tournament.
34:47
Compared to the big projections, where is it?
34:53
Especially when you have the NCHC going gangbusters on the other side.
35:03
I feel like it's been tough for the Big Ten to shake that.
35:06
I feel like they're starting to turn a little bit.
35:10
Now, is it going to reach the common fan who only knew, from Wisconsin, only knew North Dakota and Denver as rivals and don't see Michigan State and Penn State as rivals in hockey?
35:26
I don't know.
35:28
I feel like there's always going to be some animosity left over.
35:35
But the farther away we get from it, the next generation will come and only know Big Ten Hockey.
35:43
We're already getting guys playing Big Ten Hockey who are pretty close to only having that for half of their life.
35:58
Well, we saw a fake Don Lucia tweet the other night.
36:04
Players on the US.
36:05
Gold Team, Big Ten had 11.
36:08
NCHG had like three or something.
36:10
I don't know if those are the exact numbers, but something along those lines.
36:13
Of course, we love fake Don just getting everyone going.
36:19
Well, I mean, it's true, though.
36:20
I think in college hockey, when you have a coaching change, it takes a while maybe for most coaches to find their footing and get their teams put together and figure out how to construct their roster.
36:32
Maybe we're seeing that.
36:33
I was wondering what Granado was doing with the BADgers with his 40, 50 commits in the pipeline and then trying to figure out how to get his roster together.
36:42
Because I think when you have all that turnover and you have kids coming in and leaving and you don't have a structure for them to come into, you're left treading water every year trying to figure it out before you can go anywhere.
36:57
And so I think that coaches that transition, it takes a while.
37:00
I think Moscow had a really good idea of what he wanted to do and he went through some lumps to make it happen, but now he's seen some of the results.
37:09
I think Mel Pearson at Michigan, he went through some lumps trying to figure out what he had.
37:14
And, you know, Dan Cole, he's figuring out, you know, how do I be successful at Michigan State?
37:19
You know, it's not like the rest of the schools in the conference.
37:22
You know, they have some history, but no one who's playing hockey today knows what that history is.
37:27
And then you got Penn State, they kind of play a different style and Guy Gadowski is like the villain out there, doing his own thing.
37:35
You know, it's an interesting conference and it takes time for everyone to find where it's going.
37:41
You know, Jeff Jackson, Notre Dame, you know what you're going to get there.
37:43
He's been pretty consistent year to year.
37:46
So the programs are there, the finances are there.
37:49
All these teams have very big budgets to support what they want to do.
37:54
It's eventually going to start heading the right direction, but I'm glad that Granado maybe has some things figured out now with his roster construction to have a great series against Minnesota.
38:05
Well, you mentioned Guy Gadowski there about being the bad guy and he kind of gives everyone that vibe, Todd.
38:12
But what we learned this week, Todd, was he hasn't seen his family in months.
38:18
And that's tough on anybody.
38:22
But he's got a wife that's a little more sensitive to or could be more sensitive to COVID, so he's like, I'm not even going to come home.
38:30
And that's quite the sacrifice he's making.
38:37
And we get kind of blinded by some of this sometimes where we see games happening and we start to feel like, okay, well, there's a little bit of normalcy going on here, even though coaches, everyone's got masks on behind the bench and everything.
38:50
And then something like that you hear and it's like, oh, wow, well, no, we're pretty freaking far from normal.
38:59
And so yeah, that was an interesting thing to read about that really kind of brought home where, how far away we are from getting, from this being a normal season or a regular season when we can't even just have the normal relationships in person that in a family that we would normally have.
39:29
And so yeah, that was eye-opening.
39:33
And we've talked among other people that we miss just being at the rink with people we know and seeing that every day or every week or like with you guys when I would come up there just hanging out for a while.
39:49
But I mean, it's stuff like that.
39:50
That's like, whoa, that's on a different level than our smaller concerns like that.
39:56
And I know Todd, you've been covering a lot of the WCHA for the women and boy, both the BADgers and Gophers have had so many games rescheduled and canceled due to COVID on other teams and all their own teams as well.
40:14
It's really affecting the women's game quite a bit more than the men's Big Ten for now.
40:21
So to put it in some perspective, the BADgers women's team hasn't played a home game yet.
40:26
Their first one is tomorrow, Friday afternoon.
40:30
They played Ohio State Friday and Saturday.
40:32
They played the Gophers here, I believe next Friday and Saturday from remembering it right.
40:37
And that's two of the three home series they'll play all season in a span of nine days or whatever it is.
40:49
And this is a team that generates so much from its home crowd.
40:53
I mean, if you're ever at a game at La Bon Arena, a women's game and it's, you know, especially one of the games against the Gophers or Duluth sometimes, you know, you get some energy in there.
41:04
You get a couple visiting fans and it gets going a little bit.
41:07
That's, I mean, that's what college hockey is, that buzz in the building.
41:13
And obviously we don't have that anywhere this year, but to only be able to play six home games and I mean, there may be a seventh if there's an NCAA regional and we get to that point and they're hosting it.
41:28
That's got to be just a, you know, a tough way to go through a season after you already just had your season, the end of your season, the best part of your season pulled out from you, you know, nine, 10 months ago.
41:44
But credit to them for trying to put on a season because I mean, there are, you could go around every corner and say, man, let's forget it.
41:55
I mean, there's a reason here to say, let's just shut it down and come back next year.
41:59
But they wanted to give it a go.
42:01
They feel like they can do it.
42:04
So they're making the effort.
42:05
And so I've heard from both sides saying, you know, why are they doing this?
42:13
You know, they don't, they're not making money.
42:17
They don't get TV revenue.
42:20
Why are they bothering?
42:22
But I don't feel like, you know, if there's any way of doing it, people should try.
42:30
That's where I've landed on my own thoughts about it.
42:35
If it doesn't work, it doesn't work.
42:36
And you circle the wagons.
42:38
But give it a go.
42:43
Well, you speak about LeBron and that's where the men's team has moved this year and the rink is 91 feet, 3 inches wide.
42:51
Correct.
42:54
The long held belief in the notes is that it's 200 by 90.
42:59
And I wrote that at one point and I was corrected by the rink manager at LeBron and the call center who said, no, it's 91 feet, 3 inches.
43:08
So this, right?
43:10
All right.
43:10
Do we know if that was a mistake?
43:12
Do we know if that was a mistake when they laid it out?
43:15
Maybe you had some, maybe you didn't have a Madison graduate doing it.
43:18
Maybe.
43:18
All right.
43:20
All right now.
43:21
No, I think it just ended up being one of those things that was kind of passed down and someone told the court, yeah, it's 90 feet.
43:28
And so that's how it was used in the first couple of years and no one ever bothered to maybe even measure it after it was done.
43:38
Or it's kind of like one of those Ikea furniture things.
43:41
They're like, what's the screw board for?
43:43
No idea.
43:47
Yeah.
43:48
And so, yeah.
43:51
Have you been covering games at LeBron?
43:53
Yeah.
43:54
Yeah.
43:55
The men's team has played, let's say, six home games so far.
44:00
So yeah, I've been there for those.
44:01
But yeah, it's weird.
44:06
I must say both women's teams for both schools have spectacular arenas, perfect for that hockey.
44:18
I still think Ritter is one of the best arenas to watch a game, especially if you can get up in the press area in Ritter.
44:24
A lot of times some of those suites are open there, and sometimes you can kind of sit in one of those suites even and report from there.
44:31
You're overhanging the ice.
44:32
You're such a great view.
44:34
I'm guessing LaBonde is not a lot different.
44:37
It's not.
44:38
It's got a pretty similar design without the suites and with only three sides, because the one goal side is a wall like old Mariucci, where it kind of cuts down a little bit even into the wall to be able to fit it in there.
44:58
But I do wish LaBonde could have been a little bit bigger seating wise because they have no shot at ever having a frozen four there.
45:08
What is its seat?
45:09
2273 is the number that they will sell out at and NCAA wants 3500, I believe.
45:18
And I think Ritter's like 38.
45:21
Yeah.
45:22
Close.
45:24
And Ritter also has the amenities there.
45:27
They have suites.
45:27
They have the club room up there.
45:29
Yeah, they do.
45:31
And they can connect to Mariucci even for extra locker rooms if they need to.
45:36
Which they can do here at the Cole Center, too, because it's all connected.
45:40
Which actually comes into play this weekend because, and I'll get into this in a minute, because there's only one full team locker room in Laban.
45:53
Which has never been a problem before because, not talking about the BADgers locker rooms, visiting team locker rooms.
46:02
There's one there and then there's one that they can use for high school teams.
46:06
That's the separate one doesn't have all the stalls and showers and whatnot.
46:11
So never a problem because men don't play there.
46:15
Women are the only team that have visitors in there.
46:18
Well, that's not the case this year.
46:19
And so this weekend, there's a women's series Friday, Saturday.
46:22
There's a men's series Saturday, Sunday.
46:24
You've got a crossover.
46:27
I'm going to write about this.
46:29
I think it's going to run next week about the logistics of all of this.
46:32
But the Gophers are practicing here tomorrow.
46:37
They have a locker room in the Cole Center.
46:39
So they have to go from the Cole Center through the tunnel, which runs right past the BADgers where the BADgers come in and out.
46:46
So this is part of the problem of having that locker room is you'll have teams coming together and get on the LeBond from there.
46:55
During the game on Saturday, they will move, they will dress for warmups in the Cole Center locker room, come onto the ice.
47:07
Then after they've sanitized the LeBond locker room from the Ohio State people having left, they will move everything from the Cole Center locker room to the LeBond locker room.
47:19
So either after the warmup before the game or after the first period, they will go into the LeBond locker room.
47:27
What in the world?
47:28
The pieces here are kind of staggering to think about.
47:34
You know, I would say, well, I guess the period breaks are shorter now.
47:38
Just let them keep that, just stay in the locker room.
47:41
That's the thing.
47:41
Because you know what they do, I'm guessing it's not a much bigger walk than it is now because you know, like when the Gophers practice at Ritter, they just dress in their locker room and they just walk right over, don't they, Veegs?
47:52
It's probably the same distance, yeah.
47:56
I've had some uncomfortable walks with Don Lucia from practice at Ritter back to Marriott for a press interview, especially when we have to wait a little bit for everybody to get there or something like that.
48:07
Don made it uncomfortable for you?
48:09
It could be awkward.
48:10
He warmed up to me at the end, but there were a couple of walks that were a little uncomfortable.
48:14
I only had the one weird, awkward time with Don.
48:19
And that was when he was just replaced by Mr.
48:22
Matzko.
48:25
And I'm there with Craig Floor, about to go up the elevator in TCF Bank Stadium for the announcement of Matzko.
48:32
Lucia comes over to go up the elevator with me and Craig Floor.
48:37
And he's talking about him.
48:38
When do I need to hand over my keys to my office?
48:41
And it was just like, oh, it was just so weird to be standing there.
48:47
But I was.
48:48
And it was a weird lock.
48:49
It was a weird ride up the elevator, too, because it's like, yeah, you're the outgoing guy.
48:54
And you were literally just talking to Craig Floor about giving your keys for your office.
48:58
Back to Craig.
49:00
I almost wonder, though, did he have a little grin on his face?
49:02
Like, he's like, yeah, it's OK to hand over the keys.
49:06
I'm ready to go to Italy with my wife.
49:09
And hang out with the grandkids.
49:11
You know, I think Don was ready.
49:14
OK, guys, let's talk about this weekend.
49:18
Gophers coming in 10-0.
49:20
BADgers coming in around 500, at least in the league, Todd, with all the 5052, all these shootout loss.
49:33
9-0, 2-1-0, yeah, exactly.
49:35
I think it's kind of a thing that I have to get off of my phone and enter into these websites when I log in sometimes.
49:44
But Veegs, this team has obviously been playing well.
49:49
They played this past weekend.
49:50
Wisconsin hasn't played in a while.
49:52
Minnesota needs to take advantage of that, Veegs.
49:55
Yeah, I think so.
49:56
I think Minnesota has a couple lines going really well right now, and they're going in a way that I don't think they need to score on the rush or the power play to be successful.
50:05
I think they're going to generate pressure in the zone.
50:07
I think Reedy and Ranta are playing maybe as best as any pair I've seen for Minnesota in a couple years.
50:15
I mean, I can't really think back and have a pair come up that's playing as well as they are right now, and they just dominate possession.
50:24
They get pucks to the net, and they're always dangerous, and I think the BADgerD will have their hands full with those two, and if McLaughlin can get going here, playing with Ben Myers, that could be a dangerous group.
50:38
So I think Minnesota is on the up and up, getting their defenseman back, I think this weekend, you won't see a drop off from those guys.
50:44
They're still going to have the adrenaline pumping, especially having teammates on the other team that are now opponents.
50:51
They'll be ready to go, and I think Minnesota is probably going to come out with two wins here.
50:58
Jack will probably see both games.
50:59
He's been playing outstanding.
51:01
Even when he's had time off, he's been sharp the next time out.
51:04
So I think it'll be entertaining hockey though.
51:06
I'm really interested to see if Caulfield's play carries over, because I felt that times last year, it didn't.
51:13
He had so much talent, and he was really good on the power play, and he was really good when he had space, but I thought he had trouble a lot of time last year in Big Ten.
51:22
So I'm interested to see how he plays in this game.
51:25
Todd, when is the last time the BADgers officially played?
51:29
December 4th, and I'll give you this.
51:31
I had looked it up earlier today.
51:34
This is the longest stretch without a game.
51:37
When you include exhibition games, because a lot of times they would play, you know...
51:43
Yes, fill in here...
51:45
.
51:45
U18s or someone over the break.
51:49
The longest stretch without a game in midseason since 1930s......something.
51:56
And all because your Michigan State Series was nixed right at the end there.
52:02
Right, they were supposed to play Tuesday, Wednesday, I think the same nights Gophers were playing Michigan.
52:08
Correct, yep.
52:09
Remembering it right, yeah.
52:11
Yeah, and then that got postponed because of COVID tests on the BADger side.
52:17
So yeah, they had to bus home.
52:20
And two buses and whoever was positive had to go home in a car service.
52:25
Oh, that's not good.
52:28
Yeah, it's the way it works though.
52:32
You get a bad Uber rating?
52:33
I would imagine that.
52:38
Having COVID probably decreases your stars there.
52:44
Well, what are you expecting then, Todd?
52:47
I was going back today because I was trying to write my preview, and I was like, when's the last time I saw this team?
52:57
What do I remember about it?
52:59
And because they played on the road and I wasn't at that series at Ohio State, it feels like forever since I've seen them.
53:06
And what they left with was they got swept by Arizona State here before they went and played at Ohio State and split there.
53:16
But those four games, they were without four forwards who were out with COVID protocol and Dylan Holloway.
53:23
So five forwards down, including three or three set, your top three centers, maybe not top three centers, but three of your top four centers.
53:33
So it was a skeleton crew those couple weeks.
53:36
And that first weekend against Arizona State, they were just kind of, they hadn't figured it out at that point.
53:43
And so I don't, as much as that's gonna cost them in the end, I feel like in, you know, how you're comparing teams this year, I don't feel like that was a great judge of the BADgers because of what they didn't have.
53:59
Definitely not.
54:01
So I go back to like, okay, what am I gonna see here this weekend?
54:06
Well, I feel like, you know, if Coffee and Holloway come back and are at, you know, their normal levels, this is the first time they'll be back at full strength as a team or full roster since that first series they played at Notre Dame, which they, I mean, they look really good in that series.
54:26
They swept both games or they won both games.
54:29
So I feel like they will have a chance to do something this weekend.
54:35
I just don't know.
54:37
Having watched Gophers this last couple of games, it just seems like a team that's got the swagger back and it has the, you know, if something goes wrong, we'll fix it.
54:53
And that to me is where you get a team that ends up being a regular season champion and can go over the long haul.
55:04
When you can figure out what's going wrong in the moment and fix it.
55:09
Because a lot of the teams have to do that the next day and fix it.
55:13
They can't adjust in the moment.
55:15
I feel like I've seen that from this group that, you know, we can recognize what's wrong.
55:21
We're not going to panic.
55:23
Just go out and have a better shift the next time.
55:27
So I don't like picking sweeps because I think it's really hard to sweep, but I would not be surprised seeing the Gophers sweep here and keep that roll.
55:37
And Veegs, boy, if they sweep, they're way ahead in the Big Ten standings.
55:43
It could be not technically over, but they would have a large lead, Veegs.
55:51
It'd be a large lead.
55:52
They still have a lot of things to work on, though.
55:54
I mean, this is a perfect team.
55:56
I do agree with Todd, though.
55:57
This is a team that when they have had things go wrong or whatever, they've been pretty good at showing some resiliency, and they've talked about it on the bench.
56:07
People are more vocal.
56:10
They're more comfortable getting everybody back in line to play what you have to do to have winning hockey, and they play percentage hockey.
56:17
This isn't a team that turns a lot of pucks over for long stretches of time.
56:21
This is a team that doesn't come out and have a bad 10 minutes.
56:26
So I think it's shaping up to be a good second half here, and I think this will be a good measuring stick for Minnesota.
56:33
It's hard to know what to make of the first half, you know, and it's hard to know what to make of the Gophers against ASU and what that means.
56:41
So I think there's a lot of things still to be decided here, and it'll be interesting to see this next stretch of games, what's happening in the conference.
56:49
Well, it's hard to know what to make of this season in general.
56:54
How do you connect one weekend to the next or one series to the next just not knowing, are you going to have the same team from this game to this game?
57:03
Are you going to have to shut it down and be out for three weeks and then not have to try and pick it up again?
57:09
Those are the things that I would think would scare the heck out of coaches not knowing what that's going to look like.
57:16
And I think that's why Minnesota added Colin Schmidt.
57:19
They're just like, hey, he's on campus, he's going to school here, he's a local kid, let's get him on the roster, see what happens.
57:25
That's why you have all the defensemen that they have.
57:27
There's a ton of teams that have added someone, be it from Anchorage or Union RPI, teams that aren't playing this year, or from one kid that would have been coming in in a future year out of juniors because this year won't count against them.
57:46
It's kind of a free year.
57:49
So I'm surprised maybe a little bit that more teams didn't do that.
57:56
You don't want a kid to come in and not do anything and just sit out in case you need a body at some point.
58:04
But it's nice to have that insurance policy too.
58:09
Todd, what are you working on for this weekend series with Wisconsin State Journal?
58:15
Well, the lead quote from the story I'm working on for Saturday's paper, so it should be up on the site sometime tomorrow, is a BADgers player saying, but they haven't played us yet.
58:33
About the Gophers.
58:35
Billboard material.
58:36
Hold it up a little bit there.
58:39
I like that.
58:40
I like that.
58:41
I like that.
58:43
I like kids.
58:43
I like kids.
58:44
You know, even if they have to take a picture, bring it on.
58:46
I love that attitude.
58:48
And it was, that came out of, I was talking about how I had seen in our Zoom with the player that I'd seen this swagger back out of Minnesota, and it's something that I remember seeing out of guys like Crowley and Bonnen and those guys back in that era that is just like.
59:07
You just said my boy's name.
59:08
Crowley is my all time favorite player.
59:10
All time favorite.
59:11
You knew that, I mean, you went in the Mariuchian, you probably weren't going to win because just of the way they were acting.
59:17
I mean, they knew that they were really good.
59:20
Then they could almost put out a B effort and still beat you.
59:28
And at least that's a lot of the Minnesota Wisconsin games that I saw in my youth anyway.
59:35
Not to say that the Crowley era was my youth.
59:37
That was my middle.
59:41
Well, Crowley went to my high school and he was after me.
59:46
I think I was a senior when he might have been a freshman or something like that.
59:51
But still, I mean, I thought he was magic at Minnesota.
59:56
He's one point from the defenseman record in points at Minnesota.
1:00:00
He played three seasons and Richards, who has the record, played four.
1:00:03
I will always have him as my all-time favorite player and it will be tough for someone to beat that.
1:00:12
But I was bringing up that swagger and the players that I was talking to were kind of talking about, yeah, we're all right.
1:00:21
We think we can play with them.
1:00:25
They do have that kind of, they're trying to come with that same kind of attitude, which I think is a great way to go in on both sides.
1:00:32
I love that.
1:00:33
I just love that.
1:00:34
It's just great.
1:00:37
Well, I'm picking sweep.
1:00:39
I mean, of course I'm picking sweep, right, Veegs?
1:00:42
I've picked sweep all year and I've been doing pretty well, so I've got to keep it going.
1:00:46
You can't go wrong and if they don't, hey, they don't.
1:00:51
Because, you know, Moscow said it today, Veegs, we're going to get punched in the face.
1:00:55
It's going to happen.
1:00:57
It could happen at any time.
1:00:58
They got a little punch in the face by Arizona State.
1:01:01
The BADgers could easily do it this weekend, Veegs.
1:01:03
I think if Minnesota has a game like they played in the second night against ASU this weekend against Wisconsin, Bucky's going to get OW.
1:01:13
You can't play that way against a team like Wisconsin.
1:01:16
There's just too much talent on that team, and if they get a lead and would stretch it out, I think it would be tough.
1:01:23
I do have to throw this one in there.
1:01:25
I looked it up.
1:01:25
The last time the Gophers were number one coming here, the BADgers were also number 12.
1:01:31
Same as the Reds here now.
1:01:33
BADgers won a couple of 2-1 games.
1:01:35
So bring it.
1:01:41
I love it.
1:01:42
I don't know what it means, but those are the kind of things I love looking up.
1:01:48
We need more rivalry.
1:01:49
We need to kind of amp this up a bit.
1:01:51
This would have been a great year for that.
1:01:55
They're talking about having the local or the closer teams play six or eight times.
1:02:00
This would have been a great year for that, wouldn't it?
1:02:05
I can't disagree with you there.
1:02:09
Would have been nice.
1:02:10
Yeah.
