Detroit, MI – Despite a valiant effort, the Minnesota Gophers (23-11-3) fell to the Penn State Nittany Lions (23-11-2) in 2OT Friday night, ending their run at their second-ever B1G Tournament title.
PSU started fast, getting a goal in the first minute and change of action. The Gophers responded with two first-period goals from Rem Pillick and Justin Kloos to take a 2-1 lead heading into the second.
Penn State tied the game in the second and took the lead early in the third, but the Gophers’ Jack Sadek scored to tie it at 3-3.
Minnesota and Penn State wore down as the overtime period dripped away, and though both teams had chances goalies Eric Schierhorn and Peyton Jones kept their respective teams in it. Both teams had quality chances in the second overtime, but Penn State capitalized on a penalty call to win the game on the power play.
The loss sends the Gophers to the NCAA tournament, where they will likely be a #2 seed. They will be in action next weekend. The NCAA selection show will be held Sunday, where the Gophers will learn their fate.
