If the Mexico game would have ended 2-0 Mexico would have been eliminated on fair play points so they had to go for a third goal.
Here is the part of the article that talks about this:

Belgium is out of the World Cup. Morocco in a surprise wins the group with Croatia finishing 2nd.
Japan leads Spain 2-1 and Costa Rica leads Germany by the same. ?
Germany has now tied it up which again shakes up the resulting table. CR goes through if they and Japan both win after being shelled 7-0 in their first match vs. Spain.
Germany is eliminated. Japan beats Spain 2-1 to win the group and Spain finishes 2nd in the group.
Germany wins the game but loses the war.
Spain & Japan advance. This does not bother me at all.

Germany is always my favorite team after the US. I lived there 6 years and learned to play soccer there. I lived in Berlin when they won the 1990 World Cup. It always pains me to see them lose but these last two World Cups have been painful.
I could care less about the Belgium or Mexico
Netherlands has always been my 2nd favorite side but I'll have zero qualms about rooting against them Saturday night (my local start time). After that I have a soft spot for Belgium.
I don't expect a US win but how cool would it be if they pulled off a miracle to get a chance to play Argentina and Messi assuming they get by Australia?

I'm a bit frustrated that the World Cup broadcasts have not included any explanation of the games, plays, etc for us fairweather fans. They need a soccer John Madden. You can't become an educated fan of nobody explains anything to you.

When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.

Soccer is one of the easier sports (with the 4 majors) to follow, if not the easiest to follow the rules. Just tough to watch and follow with all the flopping, diving and acting hurt. It's about as bad as the NBA, which is pathetic for flopping and acting hurt.

I’m a casual soccer fan, so I have what may be a stupid question. If a player is substituted for during a game, can he come back for the penalty kicks? I’m guessing no.

The Croatia deflected tying goal was their first shot on goal of the game. Brazil had 11 shots on goal.
Croatia is 4-0 lifetime in World Cup knock out round penalty kills.

I counted at least five Brazil players standing still or walking as Croatia countered and ended up scoring the winning goal. Even as Croatia got close I only say one player backchecking (or whatever it’s called in soccer) hard.
Brazil seemed to play with a sense of entitlement, especially after they scored.

Players in the wall may jump to block a kick. A sneaky player may anticipate this and kick it along the ground hence the dude on the ground.
