All of those teams pretty much suck so Minnesota should at least not make the mistake of sucking AND over paying a quarterback.
Those teams suck BECAUSE they overpay for a QB.

WHY ARE THEY PUNTING?
JFC, this is stupid.

To be fair, no one was REALLY wanting to dole out the $40MM, it was more of an "insurance" move, in case JJ wasn't ready. Now? yeah, don't think that is happening.

Which can be a good thing. If JJ is decent they have a LOT of money to spread around to other positions. They should be able to pay some DB and OL.To be fair, no one was REALLY wanting to dole out the $40MM, it was more of an "insurance" move, in case JJ wasn't ready. Keep rushing the ball up the middle with your star OT on the locker room. Great strategy.

I thought I read $76MM in space. That's a bit of change.

Tick, tick, tick
I have to admit, reading all the comments over the past couple weeks, about 1 year, 3 year, 5 year contracts for Sam and now it's LET HIM GO.
Hilarious. Anyone who wants to let Sam go is a moron. MN lost to the 2nd best team (statistically) in the NFL on the road, and NOW Sam is trash? lol Comical.
9 days ago he had twice the value he does now. It's not just the fans who are fickle.
Vikings will end up 14-4… with 2 back-to-back losing streaks to the Lions and Rams. Other than that a pretty good season.

Get him for 10? I stand by my statement. But, he is not gonna sign for 10. Someone will offer 20 w/incentives.

It's so Minnesota to rave about how great your tatertot hotdish tastes while your neighbor is having steak. 😀
And it’s so Minnesota to turn on players, coaches and so on, once the season or games doesn’t go their way.

KOC is now 0-2 in the playoffs, a home game and a neutral site game against a 9-8 and 10-7 team.
Two weeks straight of teams doing nothing but all out, sell out blitz and the Vikes did nothing to add protection or more high percentage quick hit type plays. Stuck with their down field, need to let it develop style.
The middle Oline was exposed these last two weeks. As was the running game.

Hard disagree. Moist is a semi-synonym of wet, while creamy adds a textural component for extra ick.
Creamy sounds good in most examples. Moist is only good in one example.

I get it that they were down big, but the last 20 minutes of game time was embarrassing. No hustle, run plays chewing up clock, not going for it on 4th and 18 when there was a chance, but going for it on 4th and 11 (and throwing it 50 yards downfield) when there was no chance.
Darnold sacked 9 times I do not want him back on next season 🤬
Aloha!
Nice season, playoff flameout. sounds like our typical vikings.
Darnold was terrible last night as was the OL. lots of cap space going into next year and personally i'd rather they just launch into the rebuild if you think JJ is your guy (and his knee is full go), you turn it over to him and spend big on the rest of the roster. the pieces are there everywhere else and you ride "competent" qb play to start the year with him focused on not turning it over and let him grow into the season with hope he's hitting stride by November with a backup veteran guy on the roster who's coming in for that purpose. Another bridge year has no interest to me given then roster is good enough for you to be a fringe playoff team but there isn't a qb on the market who's taking you over the top.
they'll have some decisions to make on a couple of guys who will probably take some bigger money to keep around and maybe some you can bring back on lower deals to try win. Would imagine they'll have to pay Bynum and maybe they bring back Smith on a smaller deal if he wants to keep playing. Then there's what to do with Murphy, Tillery, Bullard and both Jones' as well as guys like Risner and Robinson. Then they need to actually make some hits on our draft picks.
With $70+m in cap, they'll have the ability to make some moves, but we can't keep just trying to hit home runs in FA while whiffing in the draft as the money just doesn't work and resigning guys is going to eat up that money real quick. bring on the mccarthy era and let's see what happens.

Some fans suggested Darnold hadn't proven himself even before these last 2 games were played, and every fanbase can be fickle. Fan is short for fanatic after all. 😀
I assume the "neighbor" having steak is Detroit because it certainly aint Green Bay. (or Chicago) Lets see what Detroit does before we say things we can't take back.
Darnold threw for 4300 and 35 TDs...to pretend he didn't prove himself is ridiculous. That was good enough for 5th in the league in both stats.
Even on GPL people were ready to give Donald a statue, a street name and unlimited contract 2 weeks ago… Now they want him so far gone that we never knew he was on the roster.

That is a bit of an exaggeration...
Sam played well enough to earn another contract with us, even the national media was saying we should sign him. He was making it very hard to let him go cause his play was excellent and the team was playing way above their expected level. If he wins the playoff game it likely stays that way. He lost the two biggest games of the season, and from all accounts didn't look good in either game (I saw neither so I cant say) so that pressure is now off. They have a a QB they think is the future, they stick to the plan then if they want to. Sam didn't do what he needed to do to force the issue.
Things change, that isn't fans turning on him, it is him regressing to the mean and fans not wanting to overpay for that. If we didn't have a young QB we just drafted I think a lot of the fanbase would be hankering to have him back. Hell if they brought him back now I doubt 90% of the fans would care as long as they don't go stupid on the money. Sure some will be dicks and pretend he didn't play well but that is a rather vocal minority.
My reasoning for wanting Sam back was I figured our chances were better next year of contending with him than with a young qb who missed his entire rookie year. Based on how the season ended though it is quite clear this team has holes that need to be filled (and old guys that need to retire) and the money we would need to keep Sam is needed to do just that. The chances Sam duplicates this season are probably 50/50 and I would bet it is highly unlikely he improves on it so we likely take a step back next year anyways. (not a big one mind you) So it makes sense to let someone else overpay him.
Most Vikings fans are not spitting on what Sam did, he just didn't do enough to warrant making him the franchise based on how things played out. We can't make the Cousins mistake again.
That is a bit of an exaggeration...
Of course its a bit of an exaggeration. It was the point on how fast fans turned on Darnold and want to act like they were that way all season.

@handyman To look at the monstrosity that was the Vikings performances the last two weeks and then try to pin it on one thing is absurd.
Darnold was great all year and not good these last two games. But no QB would have prevailed in what the Vikings put on the field the last two weeks. If people think JJ is going to come in & navigate that kind of mess when he hardly saw a blitz in college, lmfao, buckle up.
They got exposed the last two weeks, they were a paper tiger again in 2024. They ended the year with the 3rd easiest schedule in the NFC and won a lot of games. And then got smoked against a contender and decent team.
The interior OLine is an absolute joke. They got beat play in and play out, straight up, for two weeks. Throw in sending more pressure from all angles all game and you have a recipe for disaster.
KOC "We've got to find a way to solidify the interior of the pocket. There could be a 1,000 excuses made, but for me, it's the foundation of the interior of the pocket that we're going to have to take a long look at."
Coaching, almost zero adjustments. How many times did a RB pick up a blitz last night? How many times did they even keep a running back for extra protection? They didn't. Two weeks of the same recipe and they didn't do anything to try and counter it. If KOC is going to get all the credit when they are racking up easy wins then he has to take the heat when they are getting their salad tossed 6 different ways. McVay absolutely schooled his protege last night.
Again, KOC is now 0-2 in the playoffs home and neutral site games against 9-7 & 10-6 teams. KOC isn't one of the best coaches in the league yet and certainly isn't a top play caller yet. He has that potential but no way is he there currently. He's a good coach with potential.
The Vikes were the leaders this year in 20 yard pass plays, these were through the air, not YAC. They stayed in that system the last two weeks and there was never time for those plays to develop.
Kwesi better start learning how to draft and soon. Trying to rebuild a team each off season in FA for your missing parts will not work long term.

I didn't watch this game but I don't think there is a QB in the league that could do his job effectively when he is sacked 9 effing times! I've read how Darnold held onto the ball too long which led to most of those sacks but still the fact remains that the Rams were able to put enough pressure on Darnold to get 9 sacks. To me the OL is equal to fault as Darnold for the loss...I have no skin in this game so take my two cents with a grain of salt and throw it.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!
The problem is he didn't have to be sacked 9 times - he opportunities on more than a few to get rid of the ball.
And sorry there were in fact plenty of people not ready to throw the bank at Darnold until he proved himself under the big lights. That's not revisionism nor "turning" on him - that's just practical business sense. And has team noted this Vikings team has a LOT of holes despite the gaudy record that must be fixed whether Darnold is a franchise QB or not.

Sure there were people not ready to throw the bank. Though there were just as many and probably more who were ready. And now so many want to act like they were skeptical from day 1 and not drinking the Darnold Kool-Aid.

he is a terrible QB he does not scramble out of the pocket, when he passes he over throws his receivers 🤬
Aloha!
Troy aikman was disgusted with darnold’s perfomance but just trying to be somewhat nice about it. Missing on screen passes is even a difficult throw right now comes to mind first. Great regular season qb yes, handling post season spotlight a whole nother thing. He doesn’t have it. He didn’t see the field well when he did have time and didn’t have the balls to cut it loose when he should’ve.
It definitely worries me that we’ve been in 2 playoff games and 1 biggest game of the season (Week 18 bs Detroit) with KOC and bombed out every time. I don’t know if it’s personnel not having that extra gear or KOC not preparing them. It just has been non-competitive in those very important games. For once I’d like to have the team with the swagger in the playoffs that they will impose their will on the other team (offensive and defensively) and there’s nothing they can do about it.
I'd like to know why Darnold suddenly gets the yips on Week 18. I wasn't able to watch much of yesterday's game but the bits I did see, his passing accuracy was truly awful. Even the TD catch by Hockenson was thrown to his back knee. It's a miracle Hockenson caught the ball, much less scored. I also saw a lot of passes landing at the feet of the receivers. It definitely worries me that we’ve been in 2 playoff games and 1 biggest game of the season (Week 18 bs Detroit) with KOC and bombed out every time. After last week's overthrows yesterday seemed worse. I also recall the Vikings being somewhat in FG range and Sam is chased back and takes a sack for about a 15 yard loss. Decision making and execution were so bad.
As for the coaching. I will never understand why they chose to run the ball up the gut with time running low and your starting OL out with a concussion, followed by no hurry up offense and another run up the middle.

I was a Darnold backer for sure--until the Lions game. In 8 days he managed to change my opinion about him.

Because he had to side arm the throw around O'neill. This play is a good example of a lot of the Vikings plays. All 3 WRs straight down the field running 10-15 yard routes. No additional blocking support.
Two weeks of this and almost no adjustments.
You keep referencing "two weeks" of this like we all haven't watched the multiple videos of Darnold missing/ignoring wide open receivers in the Detroit game. I'd be willing to bet that we will see a lot of the same from the Rams game. Even in the video that you're posting as evidence, Darnold has Jefferson open on an in route at the top of the screen right as he completes his drop. Also has Nailor wide open on a post for an easy TD.I'd like to know why Darnold suddenly gets the yips on Week 18. I get that but it doesn't mean they're wrong. He was a pedestrian QB before he got here and shrunk under the big lights. The larger body of work is not kind to his outlook.
