Certain fans commonly ruminate over what other fans think, spending more mental energy analyzing that than the game itself.
Only recently, I read this bizarrely over-the-top take that Gopher fans "gave up on their team" after being down 0-2 to WI.
I was at that game. The fans got quiet and restless after getting down early, but nobody booed and nobody left the rink. It all seemed pretty normal to me.
Anyway, back to my amazing take...it's not like moving Cook is a far fetched idea. There was a number of trade scenarios circulating involving Cook last summer and even this year before the trade deadline. The Vikings need so much help on the O line and on defense, that laying off the big paycheck in favor of a league-average back isn't exactly crazy talk.
lmao ?It was Murphy's Law in the first half yesterday. It was truly comical at how many things went wrong for MN. I had never seen anything like that before. The 2nd half, IMO, showed the true talent level of the teams.
The second half probably was a better example of both teams, but for whatever reason Indy's offense went to sleep. All they needed was a handful of first downs against the worst defense in the league to salt the game away. When they were up by 8 with a few minutes left, making a 52-yard field goal wins it for them. Instead, they went for it on fourth and about a foot or so. The Vikings got a little lucky on the spot, and the call stood. I get the decision. The odds of making a foot are probably better than making a 52-yarder, but their kicker seemed pretty dialed in.
I thought the Vikings were toast when Cousins threw the late INT (his receiver failed to run the correct route). But like all year long, they wiggled out that too.
They got away with an awful first half and two three-and-out drives to start the second half. It doesn't seem to matter who they play this year. All the games have gone this way - except two. In those two games, the Vikes were never in it from beginning to end.
It’s been a charmed regular season…just roll with it ?
You mean, you MIS-read a not at all over the top take that back in 2003 when the Gophers were getting beat up by Denver that the crowd was giving up on their team (which they were, I was at that game too).Only recently, I read this bizarrely over-the-top take that Gopher fans "gave up on their team" after being down 0-2 to WI

Technically the second worst defense in the league if you go by total yards given up. 17th against the run, 31st against the pass.

No, this gem came from the WI series. 19 years ago is a lot of cob webs ago, but I vaguely remember that in 02 or 03 the team did not match up well with Denver. They had Michigan's number, though.
It was discussing this year's Wisconsin series, but in the context of the short period of time that the Gophers scored multiple goals. The reference point was back to the Denver game in 2003 where there was a similarly exciting string of scoring, in THAT case after the crowd was mostly giving up on the team.

I don't remember that game. I do remember G Potulny feeling pretty down after a flat performance against Denver late in the season (may have been in wcha tournament in 02). Years later he admitted feeling pessimistic about their chances after that game. Well, Denver got beat along the way so the Gophers avoided them in the NCAAs. Serendipity I guess.
Remember when this thread was about the Vikings?
Move along.

I see the Vikes finishing as the 3rd seed, I think SF will surpass them, and PHI being #1. But, I will stand by my claim on the SB prediction.

Kudos on the division win. Better than the Packers doing it again.

You could argue Indy's offense was never awake.
They got a 50 yard kickoff return on the opening drive and went 20 yards and kicked a FG. Then they recovered a blocked punt for a TD. Then the Vikings gave them the ball on the 34 yard line and they kicked a FG. Then the Vikings gave them the ball on the 31 yard line and they kicked a FG. Then they had a pick 6 for a TD. They had 2 drives over like 20 yards in the first half and scored 33 points.

It was in the 2003 season. The game you are referencing is the 2002 WCHA championship where we lost at Xcel but ended up with the easier draw after the loss.
The game we were discussing in the WI thread was a regular season game at Mariucci. Dubie I believe was in goal for Denver and was giving us fits and Denver scored a couple early. The fans were ticked the game was important. Once we got one though the dam broke and I think we chased him from the game. Game is even discussed in the "Back to Back" title video that came out.
And again the context of the discussion was the goal barage not the fans. I only brought up the fans because it was background info on the game itself. If you had read the posts instead of skimming you would have known that.
Look we all get called out on our stupid takes in the moment...either learn to shake it off (or laugh it off like most of us do) or grow thicker skin. At the time your posts made sense...but by the end of the game they looked a bit over the top and "old guy telling at clouds" like so I poked ya a bit. It's a joke not some deep commentary on your fandom.
Even in today's game, how many QBs toss 400 yards?

Well, with the language that Kirk uses...what a bad example for the children! /KirkFlanders

After down vending at the end of the 3rd. I got to my vehicle mid 4th. Listened to the end of the game and into OT. PA was not holding back. Almost after every play he was complaining and dropping one liners. It’s was pretty funny hearing Mr. Smug rant. My buddy who is also a vendor, a Packer fan. He thinks PA is the best.
Keep your stick on the ice...
I'm really hoping the Vikings stay in the #2 seed (for selfish reasons). As a beer vendor I want 3 home games. I want the Vikings to host a game Wild-card weekend and win, host a game Divisional weekend and win, Philly loose Divisional weekend and host the NFC Championship and of course WIN!!!
@skiier32 ?!?!?!
Keep your stick on the ice...
Only the #1 gets a bye? I guess that's how much I pay attention these days.

The added an extra playoff team...
#1 - bye
#2 host #7
#3 host #6
#4 host #5

Not sure my hockey coaching schedule can flex that much!

@gator I dont think my coaching schedule will allow for 3 more home games. But we will take what we can get.
unfortunately it’s a bit different. The #4 division winner will be the last place NFC playoff team, but as a division winner, they will host the 4th best team.Only the #1 gets a bye? I guess that's how much I pay attention these days.

The reasoning is, what IF all the teams are really GOOD in the division, but beat each other up? Unfortunately, that is usually not the reality.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Oh, I'm not defending it, I'm just saying that it's not new due to the new playoff format.
I'd say that you take the 4 Division champs, then the next 3 best teams. Take the whole list, sort 1-7 and those are the seeds, but that's not how the owners have decided to do it.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
It can't be as bad as the currently insipid NHL playoff format.
They do matter. They'd get a team in the playoffs even if their record doesn't put them in the top 7 in the conference.I disagree I like that division titles matter.

Sorry I didn't break it down easy enough for you to understand.

I wasn’t mocking your post, but the NFL for the format. Vikings should get the worst of the teams below them. Instead, that team will host a game by benefit if their entire division sucking.unfortunately it’s a bit different. Ill disagree. Division tittles should matter, regardless how crappy or loaded they are. I’m not a fan of reseeding after each round. Set the playoff bracket and play it out.

I look at it like the NCAA tournament for Hockey or Bouncyball. Conference/Division champions are in regardless of record. Fill out the field at-large. Rank everyone based on record (or PWR or RPI or whatever system was used to fill the at-large slots). Set up the bracket from that and go.Ill disagree. The Viking having a 'Winter Whiteout' tomorrow vs. NYG. They would look legit with this white helmet instead of the purples.
Keep your stick on the ice...
It would look cool going full stormtrooper, but the old man in me says the helmet is 100% off limits. It’s one of the best in football.
For a one time thing, it would be bad-ass. Intimidation if anything. 😉

I get it, I really do. But this is an icon. Just leave it be. The team could wear orange, brown, or chartreuse uniforms. But if they’ve got a purple helmet with white horns, you know it’s the Minnesota Vikings.

Yuck no thanks. A division title should matter more than overall record. If you are not good enough to win your division you don't deserve a home game. Does any pro league in America do anything like this? Baseball for sure doesn't and I am 99% sure basketball doesn't. I know NHL hockey has the dumbest playoff format around but even they don't do that. So what does that leave soccer?
If the "better" team can't go on the road in the playoffs and beat a so called "worse" team than they really don't have much of a beef. If the Cowboys aren't good enough to say go to Tampa Bay and win then they aren't as good as everyone thinks they are anyways. Sooner or later they will have to win on the road and if they can't win at TB they aren't winning in Philly or San Fran. (they already won here so I am leaving us out of this) This isn't college we don't rank based on strength of schedule (that is what worthless power indexes are for) nor should we.
Can't say that I care much about the playoff format. But when you have 8 divisions in a 32 team league that plays an unbalanced schedule, a division title is absolutely meaningless
Vikings leading 7-0 after 1 on a beautiful Kirk to TJ touchdown.
Followed by rookie LB Brian Asamoah with a beautiful punch forcing a fumble and recovering it.
Asamoah has gotten a lot more run the last couple weeks and has really been making some nice plays.
The white end zone, white Viking logo at 50 and crowd pretty pretty much a white is pretty much chill.

Seems like a pretty packed house still too. I was wondering how many people would be unable to make the trek with the weather and road conditions.

Weather and road conditions…?…you mean, winter in Minnesota?
Well officiated first half. Call the obvious penalties, let the borderline stuff go. Why is this so hard for some crews to do?

Weather and road conditions are in the eyes of the beholder. It’s funny how some people can’t make it to work cause of the weather and road conditions. Though in the same situation can make it to something like the Vikings game.

Agree to a point. The stripes are pretty consistent in the NFL with the obvious calls. Though play pick and choose with the borderline calls.

I guess it depends on what you drive and how good at it you are. Last night I thought the roads were fine but saw a guy in a pickup who slid way way way into the median on 94. Pickup drivers think their tough guy vehicles are better in the snow than they are and that they are better drivers than they are. This guy went through a snow bank and through at least 30 feet of 18 inch deep snow before stopping. How did you manage that fella?
