Stupid question: why are the bases closer now?
Stupid question: why are the bases closer now?
The distance between the places previously measured is the same, but they are bigger now making the edges closer together.
My guess is the next step is what I think the minors did for at least part of this season: move second base entirely within the diamond like the others.
ok - I didnt know they enlarged their size.
Stupid question: why are the bases closer now?
I thought it was for safety reasons, but I am not a great baseball mind.
:Acuna creating his own 40-70 club is absolutely insane. :
A good accomplishment, but the bases are 4.5 inches closer now. All of those close plays at 2nd where the player was out turned into being safe. And knowing so, the good base stealers will try and succeed more often. Overall, there were a lot more stolen bases this year. I'm glad we had one of the better ones.
Pitch clock. That's the real difference. You when the pitcher HAS to pitch. So that clock is ticking down...and off you go.

Pitch clock and the disengagement rules obviously had a major factor in it, as did the bigger bases. But teams are also getting better about how they teach baserunning.

Decent start for the Diamondbacks vs the Dodgers; 6 runs and 6 hits in the top of the first in game 1.

Arizona hang on, outlast Dodgers 11-2 ?
Amazing turn in Atlanta. The Braves were DOA but grab the lead in the 8th then the CF and 3B team up for an amazing double play in the 9th. High baseball IQ play but Riley to sniff our the overthrow and get the DP.

The star of this Texas-Baltimore game is definitely Adolis Garcia’s shoes.
Hold on…Texas has lights and smoke machines in their postgame locker room cele? Sweet
looking like an AZ v Texas WS
Anyone see the brawl in the 8th in Texas? Rangers were up 4-2 and I guess it must’ve effed up the momentum because I see the garbage can bangers won 5-4. Dang. Go ranger.

Garcia with a little much posing on his HR in his previous AB. Abreu def beaned him but waited til the second pitch to hit him as if. If you watch the replay from behind the plate, Abreu looks directly at Garcia, not the catcher, before hitting him. Garcia also has some beef with HOU from earlier in the season. The best part was Baker throwing a fit, getting ejected and then refusing to leave the dugout until an ump and then another coach made him leave after throwing another tantrum.

I really didn’t see much of the game and missed what lead up to it, but gathered it was a fully intentional hbp.

So there was just the one HBP tantrum thing? I've seen multiple clips on X, but didn't know if it was one incident or two....

I may be in the minority but I have a hard time believing they're drilling a guy in the bottom of the 8th in a crucial game 5 of the ALCS down by 2 runs to "send a message" to Garcia, putting a runner in scoring position and another runner on for a guy hitting .281/.410/.469 this postseason, followed by a guy hitting .317 with a .684 slugging. That just doesn't make baseball sense. Especially when Texas has Leclerc on the mount who has allowed 15 hits and 4 runs over his last 30 IP (since the calendar flipped to August). Their job was going to be hard enough in the 9th inning to score 2 runs, let alone 3+.
If you watch the replay, Abreu immediately turns back and pats his chest to apologize. Garcia didn't see it because he was barking at Maldonado immediately. Garcia's weakness throughout his whole career has been pitches in, particularly up and in. Everybody with access to scouting reports knows it. Busting him up and in so he can't extend his arms is the best way to get him out.
Garcia said in the postgame interview that Yordan Alvarez, who helped restrain Garcia, was telling him the whole way down the baseline it wasn't intentional. Everyone on the Astros (obviously) in the post-game is scoffing at the idea that they were intentionally throwing at Garcia in that situation - which you'd expect even if they were throwing at him, to be fair.
If you go back and watch the replay of Garcia's home run, not one single Astros player paid him any attention, told him to get moving, whatever. They were mostly all watching McCormick to see if the ball stayed in the yard (it was by no means an absolute no-doubt HR). Verlander even said in the postgame on-field interview "It was probably the biggest home run he's ever hit in his career. I had no problem with him pimping it, I don't think anyone in the dugout had a problem with it. There's no way we're going to put another runner on in that situation when we're down by 2."

Here's the Verlander reaction interview (side note: this may be the first time I've ever heard him talk, he does not sound the way I expected him to sound - maybe he lost his voice screaming after the Altuve HR, idk)

This isn't game 34 in the regular season in mid-May. The winner of this game is in the driver's seat to go to the World Series and play for the thing they've all dreamed of winning since they showed up in spring training (and likely their whole lives). It's not the time to be petty and "send a message." IMO, Dusty Baker was 100% right to be furious with the call to eject Abreu and to give the umpires more than a stern talking-to. Are they setting the precedence now that any time a guy hits a HR in the post-season and gets a pitch inside off the plate in his next at bat it is going to result in the pitcher getting a warning?
I noticed the first pitch after Altuve went yard to give Houston the lead in the 9th inning was chin music on Bregman and he didn't start screaming at the catcher or pitcher about it. He stepped back in the box and took his at-bat.
Schwarber and Harper go back to back with absolute bombs. The first one may not have landed before Harper hit his.

The league doesn’t agree with you as Abreu is now suspended for the rest of the series
Garcia with a grand slam to shut up the boo bird Houston crowd. I see Abreu is appealing his suspension after hitting Garcia and did pitch tonight (he was not pitching against Garcia, or that could have been epic!)
barring a meltdown there will be a game 7!
Pulling for Texas tonight. I have Astros fatigue anyway, and I don't want to see a repeat of last year's World Series.
Wow!
Rangers have opened up a can of whoop-a$$! Woe be the home team in this series.
AZ takes down filthydelphia to force a game 7.
Good night, so far.

Indeed!
But I have a feeling there’s going to be a lot more action in this game.
10-2 in the 7th. What a bummer. Was really hoping it would at least have some drama.

Agreed, but on the other hand…
IDK, I like more guys on the Astros than I do the Rangers. Especially considering the Rangers have basically just been doing what the Yankees try to do. Their longest tenured player in their organization is Leclerc who has been in the organization a whole 7 years.
All signs pointing to a Rangers win.

When you're out in the field in the bottom half of the last inning, with a decent lead, all you're saying to your pitcher is "Just throw strikes".
Rangers have never won a ws. D backs next (of the four left) at 2001. I’m ok with those two.
Houston can go away. They’ve already cheated their way to enough.
Home fans got the shaft on both sides of this one. ?
Texas looked like a dead man walking coming into Houston.
Texas lost 3 of their last 4 regular season games and Houston won their last 4 regular season games making up a 3 game lead to get the number two seed (based on the head to head tiebreaker). Clearly Texas knew what they were doing they wanted road field advantage. ?
In the playoffs Texas is 8-0 on the road and 1-3 at home.
In related news the Rangers have requested to play all World Series games at the Philadelphia/Arizona winner. ?

Smart move. Houston had their way with the Rangers all year in Arlington.
Houston's only home win was game 1 vs the Twins when the Twins let Verlander off the hook for 3 innings where he was not very good. That's pretty crazy.
Go D-backs! Trying to hang on to a 4-2 lead going into the 8th.
Rangers and dbacks it is!
The Twins season ended with Kepler staring at strike three, but it didn’t end with pinch hitting in Jake effing Cave.
I certainly didn't have "Jake Cave pinch hitting in the 9th with the season on the line" on my bingo card.

I get who they picked for NLCS MVP but come on they should give it to Rinzel for the most important 5 outs he got that was epic
I can't help but wonder what MLB would do if the Twins ever made the World Series (Yeah, I know... I'll pause here for laughter).
Here are the forecasted high/low temps for the next few days. Keep in mind the last time the World Series had a day game was 1987, so they would almost certainly be played at night. The temps would be closer to the lows for a night game.
Saturday - 35/28

Texas ties it in the bottom of the 9th with a 2R HR.
