The Sporting News is announcing their picks for the Mount Rushmore of Pro Sports for various cities.  For example for Boston they chose:

  1. Tom Brady
  2. Bill Russell
  3. Bobby Orr
  4. Ted Williams

They are announcing Mpls. this Friday.

what four would you pick for Minnesota?

My choices:

1. Kirby

2. Garnett

3. Whalen

4.  Bud

I’m sure there’s lots of other great choices.

I'd swap out the coach for a different coach - gotta have hockey from the State of Hockey

Kirby

KG

Alan Page (could go Moss here too)

Herb Brooks

Players only

Kirby

Neal Broten

Tarkenton

Killebrew

Bruce Smith is another one, but he was so long before my time I don't know of his stardom.  Back-to-back National titles, Heisman Trophy, Starred in a movie ("Smith of Minnesota"), and was a fighter pilot in WWII after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor.

If I had to throw coaches in there I'd have a hard time as Brooks has to be up there.  But how do you choose between TK (who won actual titles) and the beloved Bud Grant?

Minnesota kid, played at the “U” and lettered in 3 sports. Could’ve gone pro in 2.

In no particular order

Bud

Kirby

Well then consider Bud Grant over Winfield.

Played football, basketball and baseball at the U and played in both the NBA and the NFL.

I'll change my 4 to

Bruce Smith

Neal Broten

Keeping only 2 of my original 4... LOL

Had a funny feeling you would bring up Bud Grant and his resume.

I almost had to ask which Winfield.  Jr just started his pro career.

Based on Sporting News' picks for Boston, I think the idea is to include one player each for NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL.

Kirby

KG

Neal Broten

Moss

Hockey is so hard to pick.  Mayasich, Mariucci, Nanne, and Brooks all came to mind for me right away

Winfield (Sr) has to be up there. KG for sure. Page over Moss. Heck, even Randall McDaniel over Moss, and I love Moss. Killebrew over Kirby (but that does cross over to Winfield Sr, so...). Broten or Brooks for hockey.

Honorable mention: Noora Raty, Gophers Hockey. She wasn't one of us, but she became one of us. 😉

Well the Wolves don’t exactly have much to choose from.  Not a basketball guy.  I liked KG but he left and won titles in Boston.  He isn’t going to be on that pedestal.  Has to be Miken or McHale.

Sounds like clickbait for the Sporting News to me... Like 99.9% of every list that comes out these days.

ANY list, no matter what subject, is clickbait. It has been since the beginning of lists.

-Darrin Nelson

-Gary Andersen

-Naufahu Tahi

-Jim Pohlad

(could have included Glen Taylor and David Kahn)

These picks are coming from someone who is only a transplant so take my takes FWIW...

  1. Brooks - I'm sorry but Broten didn't make headlines in Lake Placid and even his long NHL career and Stanley Cup are still not enough to pass over Herb in my opinion.
  2. Kirby - Harmon is a close second but every big game image for the Twins has Kirby in it.
  3. KG....nuff said.
  4. Moss - it should be Bud but I feel The Sporting News will go the route of a popularity contest and Moss is a bigger character to those outside of Minnesota.

Twins - only Major 4 sport where MN team was the Champions (87 & 91) so it has to be a player - obviously KIRBY.
Vikings - BUD. Wolves - KG. 1980 Miracle on Ice - HERB

Mikan won 5 times here or something close to that? Has to be him for bball. Nothing else comes close to that except maybe Whalen with 4 titles in terms of winning here.

I was reading some appalling article that was published by some stupid clickbait sports website saying Kirby is an undeserving hall of famer… obviously he never looked at his production.. good lord his career was incredible until he was diagnosed with glaucoma.

These guys would be the asses sticking out the other side of the mountain. :good2:

Broten may not have been the headliner in Lake Placid, but he won a national championship with the Gophers and a Stanley Cup. During that gold medal run, he was every bit the player his teammates were. He may not have put up big numbers, but he was one of the best players on the team in all three zones.

Even so, I agree Herbie is the guy. Three national titles at the U and a gold medal against a team even the NHL all stars couldn't beat seals the deal.

Well the votes are in:

Killebrew

Kirby

Fran

KG

When you look at just players and not coaches to form the Mount Rushmore you just can't argue any of these guys off of it.

Having an understanding of the history of teams in Minnesota from before I was born, I'd argue Mikan over KG, but I certainly understand why they lined up this way.

Nagurski played for the Bears as a pro.  Looks like they are more interested in pro careers than college.

Here’s a question - where in Minnesota would you build a mt. Rushmore of MN sports - assuming life size like the real one?  ?

it does not have to be in an existing pile of rock.  This is just a hypothetical for fun’s sake, assuming someone could possibly engineer something like that.

Rushmore Minnesota. B-)  ( yes there is a Rushmore Mn. It is located near I-90 in Nobles County with a population of about 350 )

I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
