That seems like the earliest they've played in recent memory.

As we get closer to Iowa week, it will be important to brush up on some of the rules regarding returns.

I just love that someone took the time to set this up.

This defensive line has been fun to watch so far. They are relentless.

Gophers opened as 3.5 point underdogs to Iowa. It has quickly got bet down to 2.5 points.

Like I mentioned after last weekend, I have no idea what to expect in this game.  I haven't paid attention to what the Gophers are doing outside of the final scores of their games.  So again I don't know what to expect from the Gophers.  I also don't know what to expect from the Hawkeyes outside of Kaleb Johnson.  Through three weeks he is the leading rusher in the nation which has helped drag Iowa's offense into the top 60 for total offense.

Iowa's bright spots are the rushing offense and rushing defense.  Areas of concern; passing offense, passing defense, and special teams defense.  Cade McNamara just isn't mobile enough and has made terrible decisions by looking off open players, passing to double coverage, and has NO touch on his passes at all.  Iowa's DB's are suspect with giving up three pass TD's of over 60 yards so far this year.  Special teams gave up a horrible punt return TD last weekend.  Finally, Kirk Ferentz has made some very questionable coaching calls in his two games on the sidelines.

My gut is telling me this will be a game much like the Iowa State game.  I'll call it a 20-19 Iowa win with Floyd coming home.  Now...I can be convinced to switch my prediction very easily with some facts about the Gophers.

It's funny...I listened to a couple podcasts this week that feature very knowledgeable and long time Iowa fans that didn't realize that Gopher fans saw this game as a rivalry game.  Even with the Floyd of Rosedale trophy most Iowa fans don't see this game as a rivalry game.  I have been saying this for years but no Gopher fan will listen to me when I say that.

Thats bullshit.  They stormed our field and tore down the goalposts and it wasn’t because they were indifferent.

Sorry to burst your bubble about that game but winning that game helped clinch a share of the B1G title and finish an undefeated B1G season.  That was a celebration which wasn't about beating Minnesota, a team who Iowa was supposed to beat, and more for finishing out an amazing season and going to a BCS bowl.  That was Kirk Ferentz's fourth season at Iowa and after the way the first two seasons went and losing to Iowa State earlier in 2002 Iowa fans didn't expect to finish the season the way it did.  Again, that is the reason for that celebration.  I will agree with anyone though who says that it was an over the top, ridiculous, or even stupid move by visiting Hawkeye fans.

Just out of curiosity who do Iowa fans see as their conference rivals? Would Nebraska be the big one?

lol....there's "It wasn't a fair catch" merch all over the state too.  I happened to be in Mason City in the middle of the off season (April) and there were like 4 different styles of t-shirts and sweatshirts in an apparel shop.

Gophers need their OL to get off to a better start than they have the first 3 games. They've been slow out of the gates each of the first three games. Not going to be able to get away with that against the Iowa defense.

Maybe some of the younger fans that are used to Iowa owning the series don't see it as a rivalry? But plenty of Iowa fans my age sure as heck see it as a big game.

Before the divisions became a thing in the B1G I would put Michigan at the top of that list with Wisconsin coming in second because we didn't like Alvarez after leaving Iowa.  Once the division thing started Wisconsin became the obvious team and then when Nebraska joined the partly because of their storied history Iowa fans enjoy beating them.

I really don't really know why Iowa fans don't see Minnesota as a big rival because there are few teams that Iowa has faced as much as Minnesota.  For me I guess I would say that Iowa's record versus Minnesota since I really have been a big Iowa fan(1980) is 30-15, so I've watched Iowa win much more than lose.

@alignrock I really wish Iowa fans would get over that "it wasn't a fair catch"...there were so many other reasons why Iowa lost that game.

Maybe show them this stat and let them know it’s not a rivalry until Iowa catches up.

Ah yes, the storied history of the Hero's Trophy sponsored by HyVee.  What a tradition.

Like I mentioned, there are few programs that Iowa has played as much as Minnesota so I do acknowledge the history.  I also know that Minnesota dominated this series for long stretches prior to the arrival of Hayden Fry.  I will also acknowledge that Minnesota has several national championships to Iowa's zero.

I hate to state the obvious though but sports fans have short memories especially with college football where it is a what have you done for me lately?  That's why I point to the 30-15 versus Minnesota that Iowa has since 1980...people remember that or Iowa fans do anyway.

Is it right for Iowa to not look at Minnesota as a rival?  I don't know but that is how it is.

I don't base a rivalry on a trophy.  This trophy is just a prop for the outcome of a game between two programs with a short history.  Iowa fans just like beating Nebraska because their fans have an inflated opinion of their program which at one time was pretty dominant.

Nebraska fans are going through what my grandfathers generation endured with their Gopher Football fandom.. Watching a once great program recede into mediocrity. Outside of older generations and historians of college football not many know how dominant Minnesota used to be. The Knute Rockne Intercollegiate Memorial Trophy getting ‘retired’ by Minnesota after winning their third straight championship in 1940 is surely evidence of that.

Iowa week is always a great time. Great rivalry, great trophy.  Can’t wait… except for I will miss the game as my sister is getting married on Saturday.

Before I moved to Minnesota 18 years ago I never really paid much attention to this game even with Floyd at stake.  Even with everything I've said I do agree that this week is enjoyable even as a Iowa fan living in Minnesota.  I've handled the barbs over the years here on GPL pretty well even with countless "Who Hates Iowa" pokes.  @handyman and @gator are easily the two who hate Iowa the most but I don't think I've taken more good hearted shots from anyone as much as @greyeagle though.

Well I recently had an older Iowa fan claim that Iowa State isn't a rival.  Nebraska was the rival game.   This guy is one who's office at work is yellow and black so he's not a casual fan either.

1) Good thing Minnesota is coming down with sone difficult catches. Cause the stripes are refusing to call PI on Iowa.

2) I’ve said it 100’s of times… the all maroon uniform and  helmet combo at nights is the best uniform combo for the Gophers.

This RB Taylor kid is pretty good. If PJ doesn't get ultra conservative (like he usually does late in games) Gophers will beat Iowa tonight! EDIT - Unfortunately Caleb Johnson is even better than Taylor. Crap

Within the game coaching by PJ & (his) staff is basically non-existent in terms of making adjustments on the fly. Disappointing to say the least.

I think I understand the reason for that play, but I don't agree with it.  Up until that point in the game, all points had been scored on the east end zone because of the wind west to east.  We couldn't throw the ball in the 1st or 3rd quarters going into the wind.  Did pretty well in the 2nd with the wind.  Plus our punter was losing 15+ yards of field position going into the wind.  I think PJ wanted to punt with the wind and pin Iowa back.  He completely forgot that his defense couldn't stop the running game.  If that truly was his thinking though, he should have ran on 2nd down and had a 3rd down play with the wind in the 4th quarter.

Completely outclassed in the second half.  They came out flat and were not ready for the fight.  PJ used to be lock down in the 2nd half with a lead.  In both losses this year he has blown 2nd half leads.

Stupid question.
I swear someone once said game times had to be announced at least seven days before the game per some rule.  I still see tbd for next week.
Either I made that up or the big ten just doesn’t give af.

Both are probably true.  😂

I've been a Fleck guy since Day 1 and even despite last year I thought he had earned the right to remain the coach. After today I'd have to be convinced not to believe it's time for him to go.

But to get who?  I just don't know who out there is better that either 1) wants to be here or 2) we're willing to pay to be here.  We don't have a legacy football player turned coach whose dream it is to coach MN.

I think next season is Fleck's do or die year if this season doesn't play out (miss a bowl game).  They gave Mason 10 years of 5-7 win seasons, Fleck is in year 8.  This team needs to play .500 the remainder of the season for me to feel good about it.  I think 6-6 was a realistic goal this year in the new B1G, no divisions, tough schedule, transition year, etc.  Not saying I'm ok with being a .500 team, just that for 2024 I felt it was reasonable.  I don't know where those 4 wins come from.  Maryland and Rutgers look good, Illinois is having one of those potentially special once every decade seasons and then you have UCLA, USC, Michigan and PSU.

With the loss to Iowa you have to now beat Maryland, Rutgers, one of IL or WI and get the upset against UCLA, USC, Michigan or PSU.

That 2nd half against Iowa was the worst half of football I've seen from a Gopher football team in a long time, probably the 2020 covid year if not before.  Yes, we got obliterated by Michigan last year, but that was expected.  I trust (loosely) that we won't see that again this season against a comparable opponent.

I used to ask the same question and at this point I don't care. Like I said I've been a huge PJ guy since the start.  The student section is full, they're winning bowl games and they're putting guys into the NFL. But I'm sorry at some point the overall failures have to mean something and I've reached that breaking point.  There is 0 reason to go 1-7 vs. Iowa and the failure (when it mattered) to win a Big Ten West at any point matters. Losing over and over to Kirk effing Ferentz is embarrassing.

I think PJs buyout is $22M or something this year. He’s staying at least through next year. We don’t have that money laying around.

Yeah 22M and drops to 18M next year after EOY. I am a big PJ supporter but this was embarrassing.

agreed this was the worse half I have seen in a long time from them.

2 wins and not sure where I see enough to be bowl eligible

Without donor pressure and support, no one is paying either of those buyout amounts.  The U will likely have to negotiate an extension that brings the buyout down if that’s the direction they’re heading.  Or, somehow, Coyle has been good at getting coaches to step away or find other opportunities.

After leading 14-7 going into halftime, to lose 31-14 was especially embarrassing. No halftime adjustments by PH & his staff. BUT…at this point ya gotta stick with PJ, because nobody, and I mean NOBODY with a successful track record wants the MN Head Coaching 🏈 job. And that ain’t changing anytime soon, especially in the expanded Big Ten.
