D needs to hold here they’ve really bungled this drive.
Gophers' defense having their problems...gave up 3 straight fourth downs and failed to make a stop a couple times on 2nd and long.
Defense needs to make a play here. Can't allow a TD.
FG here feels like a win even though it’s not with all the holding calls and fourth down conversions.
Allowing a 10 minute drive to essentially end the half is brutal.
Illinois has dominated time of possession. Defense needs to create a turnover in the second half.
Brett points out PJ took two timeouts to force a kick into the wind (which was really dumb imo) only to point out he was going for it on 4th down all the way.
LOL
17 total yards passing in 1st half? ?
Aloha!
HUGE return from Redding!
Pretty sure Mo was short of the endzone but there was no angle to see the ball when his knee went down so the touchdown stands.
Gophers lead!
Illinois made that look easy. Their OC is toying with Rossi right now.
Good lord defense.
At some point our WRs have to catch balls that hit them in the gut.
Gophers are getting their asses kicked. Lucky to be down only 6 at the moment.
Make a play defense
Just so trash, giving up a long run on 3rd and 9 and letting them have another long drive that never ends is just ridic, especially after you decide to punt at the 47 on 4th and 2.
Cheese us. 3rd and 9 and the rush for 14
Not that it seems like it'll make a difference the way Illinois is moving the ball, but that was a very weak PI call against Walley
What a horseshit PI call
I get why the gophers punted on fourth but the D hasn't been good all day and punting to the 20 only for them to waste a ton of clock and make it two scores isn’t ideal.

I texted my buddy at the time and said 4th and 2 you gotta go for it. Illinois is using 5 minutes every time they touch the ball.
Especially with Mo, against Purdue without him it’s a slightly different convo.
Guy from Illinois just full on punched Morgan in the side of the head
Morgan is literally closed fisted punched in the side of the helmet. Let’s see how this plays out….
They can't review it for targeting because he was a running and it wasn't a crown of the helmet.
And then they call him down short of the first down marker which was a terrible call too.
Kaliakmanis in while Morgan is likely concussed.
These refs are so garbage. Also our punter can only kick it short to the 25 or through the endZone apparently.

They’re not the problem.
Wright gets called for OPI when the Illinois CB got spun around and Wright went over him.
What is Wright supposed to do there? Stop his route?

I will never understand how this isn't a penalty

They’re certainly part of it, hard to come back without your actual QB or when they hang on your receivers all day and never get called. But I agree that the D is making it impossible to win.
Our WRs need to spend 20 hours a day working on catching balls that hit them in the hands.
Yeah the dropped pass in the redzone for a pick comes to mind down two scores. Idk how they go from Johnson and Bateman to whatever this is, there’s just not much in the way of talent there.
Seems like a bunch of passes hit receivers in their hands and we’re not caught.
Boo this defense.
Yeah idk who was worse between the D and receivers but neither really gave the team a chance to win.
They’re gonna need to figure out what to do without Mo next year because he’s the entire offense and they looked horrible without him 2 weeks ago.
This team was way over hyped. Mediocre at best and maybe not even that.
Fleck can’t win games they should be able to.
Didn’t get to watch. What was the story of the game - I certainly see we lost. :/

Defense let up every fourth down conversion, couldn’t get off the field, let up like 3000 yards on run plays even after stuffing the first down run almost every time.
On offense the receivers still aren’t good and can’t catch which resulted in a pick instead of points one drive kinda like the Purdue game. I don’t think the refs helped the pass game much between the missed PI calls and especially when allowing Tanner to get punched and concussed for no call but the receivers also never beat anyone either.
Also not going for it on fourth and 2 on the 47 when the D can’t get off the field and you have Mo Ibrahim is on the coaches, especially when the punter isn’t anything special and isn’t pinning them inside the 10 (it’s always either out the end zone or punt to the 20-25).
ANOTHER Gopher ? team that essentially was overhyped after beating a ranked team but is actually above average (at best) PJ…has to find a way to recruit better QB’s & Morgan is a relic. It’s an indictment on how one dimensional the team is. If the game plan fails they are done.
Morgan wasn’t bad honestly, he hit a guy in the shoulder/hands for what should’ve ended up in seven points that drive and instead it gets picked. He ran the ball well and his receivers never get separation. Plenty of other times he hit guys in the hands too. He’s one of the last players I’d blame for that outcome besides Mo. That’s not to say I wouldn’t be happy with someone better or that it’s impossible to upgrade but he had little help.
If Morgan misses extended time I reckon we'll see Morgan covered up for a lot more than we expect from our WRs.
Jackson dropped at least one, Spann-Ford had at least 1 drop, and MBS had the ball taken right off his shoulder because he refused to go back for it or even reach his arms out for it.
I am honestly shocked you guys didn't beat Illinois, they aren't that good. After looking at the stats though I see that one spot I didn't think would be an issue was, the passing game. Illinois has a good defense but I am shocked that Spencer Petras had a better day than the Gophers did passing against them. Petras went 18/30 for 170 with 1 INT, this was the game that was all field goals. Iowa only racked up a measly 52 yards of rushing, offensive juggernaut they are not.
I don't see the chicken little thing applying to this Gopher team. Illinois was going to be tough, the Purdue loss is the one that stings IMO. Penn State is going to be tough for any team outside the top 10 in the country. The rest of the schedule for the Gophers still tips in their favor, but I wouldn't take my word for it.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!
Time of possession and lack of passing yards. Those were the telling stats of the game. Embarrassing.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Honestly more surprised at giving up 470 yards than anything, the D wasn’t great against Purdue but they weren’t really the reason for that loss.
Didn't get to see the game, as I was at work, as was the case with the Purdue game, so I certainly can't comment on anything first hand. It was only a couple weeks back, but it seems like a million years since the "No OSU or Michigan on the schedule/the Big Ten West is down/Wisconsin and Iowa are there for the taking" talk. Not pissed, just terribly disappointed.
So disappointing. Not much else to say. Ugh.
I haven’t looked up the stats but it seems the Vikings are giving up a high percentage of 3rd down conversions too. It’s not good for my heart.
Illinois Is 5-1. They are good. Maybe not great, but not terrible.
The over/under on the Gophers this season was 7.5. We look very much like that team. The start gave us false perspective.
The problem is that next year is a rebuild and if there was ever a season to make noise it was this one. Losing to a fringe top 25 team and giving up 470 yards in the process is pretty embarrassing especially after losing to Purdue on homecoming. Sure this team could win 8 games with one of the most favorable schedules they’re ever gonna get but that’s not exactly inspiring. Also that’s no guarantee as the schedule difficulty doesn’t exactly get easier moving forward.
