Well Russia has been excluded from the tournament since their invasion of Ukraine.

USA is in a pool without Canada, Russia, Sweden, or Finland?

Weird.

Russia isn't in the tournament for the 3rd year in a row.

Groups are determined by how teams place the previous year.

Group A

Canada (1st place last year)

Sweden (4th place last year)

Finland (5th place last year)

Germany (8th place last year)

Lativa (9th place last year)

Group B

Czechia (2nd place last year)

USA (3rd place last year)

Slovakia (6th place last year)

Switzerland (7th place last year)

Norway (promoted) - Austria who finished 10th place last year was relegated

I need to wait a few days to try the free week on FUBO in order to get the NHL Network since YouTubeTV doesn't carry it.

It is amazing that the NHL Network isn't available on more outlets. It is any easy way to promote the league. I'm fortunate that I still have it on DirecTv, although I pay through the nose for DirecTv  and may drop it when all of these league rights get straightened out. I am slowly adding a few streaming services with BTN+ and ESPN+.

I found what looks like a safe link to watch the NHL Network without a TV package or having to do the free FUBO trial.

Switzerland is a bit outmatched.  The US moves the puck up the ice so well.

I'm trying to figure out... is Switzerland really this bad?  Is Team USA really this good?  Or (seems more likely) somewhere in-between.  Interestingly Slovakia only beat Switzerland 3-0.  This kind of beat-down is good for USA's goal differential, at least.

Closing in on the double-Culvers at the 2nd intermission.

Team USA has a lot of offensive firepower so they are capable of scoring in bunches when they get decent looks or a goalie isn't playing well.

Also Jim took a penalty. He wants his name all over the box score.

As good as the offense has been so far the defense is suspect. Correct me if I am wrong but against top tier teams They may have problems. Any thoughts?

Czechia will provide a good test of that theory.  I see a bit of what you are saying as they reminded me a bit of St. Thomas Academy under the Vannelli brothers. Fantastic in the offensive zone but defensively they would run around.  It worked well against subpar competition but teams that played with a good defensive structure gave them fits.. cough cough Duluth East..

That was partly on Buium as well, the guy in front of the net was his on the way in, and he went after the puck instead.  Rinzel recognized this a second too late and couldn't re-position.  (Not saying it's entirely Buium by any stretch, Rinzel should have reacted faster)

Rinzel might have been slow to react, but clearly, he was engaging the player behind the net.  His partner was trailing the play and should have made that pretty simple read. He probably thought the puck would come around the end boards, but he needs to cover the guy standing all alone in front. You know, the high-danger zone.

The U.S. has been lucky. They are a quick-strike offense, but they can't keep giving their opponents so many good looks. Play solid defense first and score on the transition. They are way too loosey goosey in their end and forwards are already toes-forward without possession.

Don't like the way they're starting the 3rd.

Some of these passes by team USA are very similar to the ones the Gophers made during the 1st half of the year. ( that is not a good thing )

I don't like that preliminary games can't end as a tie. Any tiebreaker format could easily accommodate such a result like for instance World Cup group play.

Sneaky chance at the end with 2.2 left but no dice.

OT coming up.

U.S. with a fortunate win today. The shootout is a coin flip, and it gave the Czechs a legit chance for the upset.

Haven't seen much of Oliver Moore in this tournament.
