Don't see many Gopher recruits listed
The youngest player at the World Championships.
https://www.iihf.com/en/events/2023/ww/news/43015/young_star_rising_star
I’ve mentioned this girl a couple times in the past. She’ll be coveted if/when she decides to come over.
Another top “D” in the portal - Ohio State freshman Sidney Morrow. Younger sister Sophie, a sophomore at Shattuck, is also a top talent.
Morrow's from my home state of Connecticut. Wouldn't be surprised if she goes a little closer to home, an ECAC school or maybe Northeastern.
and the winner is……….
Not sure if a grain or two of salt might be needed here, but on the most recent “Her Ice” podcast from Youth Hockey Hub they are saying that St. Lawrence goal tender Lucy Morgan will be a Gopher.
This weekend will be “Final 54” weekend for the girls (also the boys at Plymouth Ice Center) at Fogerty Arena in Blaine. This is the second step in USA Hockey’s process in identifying prospects for the 2024 World U18 Championships (January 6-14 in Switzerland). Minnesota girls on last year’s U.S. team that are eligible to play this year are forwards Josie St. Martin (Stillwater) and Kendra Distad (Minnetonka) and goal tender Layla Hemp (Minnetonka).
Roster links for this weekends teams with players that last year made it as far as the National Select 18 camp.
- F Kendra Distad (Minnetonka) ‘24
- F Sawyer Fleming (Shattuck 16u) ‘25 from Rochester
- G Layla Hemp (Minnetonka) ‘25
- D Lauren Goldsworthy (Minnetonka) ‘24 Mankato recruit
- D Carly Humphrey (Elk River) ‘24
- F Josie St. Martin (Stillwater) ‘24 Ohio State recruit
- D Lauren Karl (Minnetonka) ‘24 St. Thomas recruit
- D Taylor Porthan (Edina) ‘24 UConn recruit
- F Ayla Puppe (Northfield) ‘24
- D Mackenzie Jones (Andover) ‘25
- D Courtney Little (Andover) ‘25
The 15’s process starts this weekend also at Fogerty. Schedules, rosters and other information for all age groups can be found HERE
Everyone is pretty worked up about transfers and recruiting classes but it's a bit of a philosophy difference, no? OSU is building completely through upperclassmen in the portal - creating a St. Cloud or Mankato (or ECAC team) on the men's side if you will.
Meanwhile, MN is holding true to bringing in developmental talent and not taking roster spots away from recruits. Not too dissimilar to Motzko on the men's side.
This should be the last year of the 5th year option shouldn't it? Freshmen in 19-20 would be 5th year players in 23-24. That will reset the landscape a bit.

Freshmen in 20-21 had that free first season. They'll get a fifth year.
Youth Hockey Hub names their girl’s youth player of the year. I’ve seen her quite a few times. Smooth skater, excellent puck handler. Will be a freshman in high school this coming season.

If true that will be great having depth at that position is always nice to have ! I hope it’s true
Apparently Ohio State still recruits underclassmen. Northfield 's Grace McCoshin to the Buckeyes.
Would definitely like to see Wilgren wind up here. The Gophers are going to need some success with the portal in order to be very relevant next year.
Although in general, the program has done very well over the years in seasons where not much has been expected of them. Not NCAA titles, although they graduated a lot in 2012, and it was a bit of a surprise that the perfect season team was as dominant as it was right out of the gate. It helps to get a class of Brandt/Stecklein/McMillen/Menefee/Leveille. I look at teams like 2002-02, 2005-06, and 2013-14 as teams that were able to overcome their weaknesses for much of the season.
She commits to Bucky today.
So with the exception of Morgan who is rumored to be headed to MN the Gophers strike out on all the rest of the higher profile transfers and nearly all of them head to Ohio State or Wisconsin.
Yeeesh.
So we don’t play the arms race we have 6 freshman coming in https://gophersports.com/news/2022/11/17/womens-hockey-gophers-sign-six-to-2023-24-freshmen-class
And if Wisconsin is not bringing back Kornish how do we know if Morgan is not going there? It’s all rumors right now
These incoming freshman have some big shoes to fill and it usually takes till Mid season for freshman to catch up to the speed of the college game ?

I wouldn't expect Morgan to start over Vetter (obviously a backup who's capable of starting is a must in the current era of college hockey). But they're going to need #31 to do quite a bit of heavy lifting next year, which she's capable of.
Making the NCAA tournament may be an uphill climb if some of the depth players don't step up.

Sometimes I wonder if it's that some of those kids would rather play for a hockey team than bible camp.
I didn't even know Penn State star Kiara Zanon was in the portal. Off to Columbus she goes. It's an arms race between cardinal and scarlet. Maroon is just staying the course.

She literally was in the portal for hours before announcing to OSU.
Some crazy tampering going on, but again no one will enforce it, so might as well do do it.

If the talking is transfer to us we will put you on scholarship before the player officially enters the portal, then yes.
Once they are in the portal anything goes, but I find it really hard to belive a player that didn't officially enter the portal until yesterday morning and then has a new team by yesterday afternoon wasn't tampered with.
This is a quote involving football, but the rule is the same in hockey.
"There’s also the concern over improprieties. There have been consistent rumors about various college coaches reaching out to players on other rosters before they entered the Transfer Portal. That’s a direct NCAA violation and comes with likely recruiting sanctions such as loss of scholarships and coaches not being able to recruit off campus, etc."

and here is an official doc from the NCAA outlining what is and is not permissable.
https://quchronicle.com/82332/sports/quinnipiacs-top-scorer-olivia-mobley-enters-transfer-portal/
I'm sure she will look good in some shade of red?
Too soon?
But seriously, hopefully Frost is making some calls. She looks like she would be a nice piece to plug in. She went to Breck so would have been teammates with the Lindsay's and Emily Zumwinkle.
Wrong maroon and gold.

Olivia Mobley to Ohio State. Silly me, I thought there might be a shot there.
Wow this has got to be a record for the yuckeyes if your a leading scorer on a team probably gets call from someone who got instructed by coach to make contact And ohio state got be working some nil or something just crazy building a all star team in a few short months
what could go wrong!
I know I won't be alone in laughing my ass off if this crashes and burns in Columbus
But knowing our luck it won't.
Seems like the locals have probably added two from the portal, St. Lawrence goaltender Lucy Morgan (Mandan, North Dakota native who played her final two high school seasons at Maple Grove) and UMD defender Taylor Stewart (Rochester native who played at Shattuck). I believe both will have one year of eligibility.
The staff may have some interest in Solveig Neunzert, a German born defender from Princeton who played with Swedish teams coming up through the ranks. She would have one year of eligibility left.
The names of the local 16 and 17 year old girls moving on to national camps has been released. The girls going to the Select 18 camp are being looked at for spots on the U.S. team for next January’s U18 World Championships. The girls going to the 16 & 17 camp have a shot at the remaining slots at the Select 18 camp. The Minnesota 15s will have their instate camp in mid-June at St. Olaf and some of those girls (traditionally only a couple) also have a chance to advance to the Select 18 camp. Josie St. Martin, Kendra Distad and Layla Hemp are the Minnesota girls who were on last year’s U.S. team that have eligibility for this coming year.

A couple things on the above post. Addison Finn was listed as a forward in the “Minnesota Hockey” release, so I listed her that way. She plays defense for Stillwater and I’m pretty sure she was playing defense in the Selects games I watched. Typo? quite likely. Kind of surprised by some omissions, the 2007 birth years seem pretty thin. Fortunately some of these girls get a second chance in the June camp.

Looks like Morgan has 2 years left....interesting. Should be a fun goalie room in 2024-25 with her and Vetter in their final seasons and Clark as a freshman.

I'd be surprised about that, in the non-Covid seasons she's played 29, 34, and 35 games.
New numbers announced.

Here is the list of players named to the Select 18 camp in July. A few 2006 and 2007 birth years will be invited after the June 16 & 17 national camp and some Minnesota 2008s could be invited after their June in-state camp at St. Olaf. I may get around to a more detailed list next week. From a recruiting angle the 2007s are the ones to focus on as they will be announcing commitments after August 1st. The bulk of the 2006s here are already committed.

If you scroll up two posts, I did list the current invitees to the National Select 18 camp (July 16 to 22 in Ohio). Added some info (hometowns, commitments, graduation year, etc.) as I could find it. Players with the ?? by their names are returnees from last year’s U.S. team at the World 18u Championships.
The Minnesota HP 15 camp started yesterday, and will run through Thursday at St. Olaf. Historically a couple players will likely be invited to the Select 18 camp from here.
In addition, some players (I think last year it was in the 10 to 15 range) will be invited following the National 16 & 17 camp (held in two weeks) to round out the Select 18 roster.
Coaches may start contacting girls in the 2025 class on Thursday, so commitments from that group may start trickling in soon.

Take Tony's predictions with a grain of salt, but here's an article listing the 13 top in-state recruits and where YHH expects them to go. Of note, five on this list Tony believes to be future Gophers.
Generally on the men's side we'll see a lot of players commit in the first week of August. Recently it's taken a little longer than the first week of eligibility for the top women to commit.
Yet another article on the recruiting window opening for the ‘25 grads. This one also mentions some girls from north of the border.
https://thehockeynews.com/womens/college/let-the-phone-calls-begin-ncaa-recruiting-period-opens
One quibble, the writer mentions Chicago Mission forward Iris Cheng. She is a ‘26 grad year and will have to wait until next year at this time to commit.
Kennedy just ignores the late '06s because (Anglo) Canadians can't fathom that grade isn't perfectly tied to birth year on this side of the border.
Not really recruiting related (yet), but an interesting story.
Offer her now for the name alone.
Players from the Minnesota HP 15 camp moving on to national camps have been named. Haley Box, an Eden Prairie girl who had a strong freshman season at Holy Family, will be the lone Minnesota 2008 birth year moving on to the Select 18 camp. Haley is a smaller forward, but is very skilled.
