Heise with 5 points today and Kessel with 4 as USA beats CZE 10-1. Will play for gold against either CAN or SWE on Sunday at 12:30pm on NHL Network.

Actually it’s Canada or Switzerland, but of course it’s really just Canada.

The women kick off their season with an 2:00 exhibition with the University of Manitoba. Admission is free. The Bisons already have seven games in including a 5-1 loss to Mankato last night. They started out with a four game European swing with games in France, The Netherlands and England. Manitoba’s roster is all Canadian except for one girl from Finland and one from Russia. One local tie is junior defender Trechelle Bunn who played high school hockey at Warroad.
Manitoba must have a decent budget if they can go traveling to Europe. Unfortunately, they looked like the kind of team that would go to Europe to play in France, The Netherlands, and England (rather than, say, Switzerland, Finland, and Sweden.
The Gophers had the better players on the ice, so much so that they had to sit entire lines for a period at a time (e.g. GZum, Oden, Norcross sat out for the first; Heise, Boreen, Skaja sat the third). This was likely done so that forwards could stay somewhat warm between shifts and have room to turn around on the bench.
Not that these groups played together when they were out there. One line in the first period was Bouveng with Lindsay and Tatur; it was dangerous. Partly, this was because the Swede does a number of things well: good speed and instincts, shoots quickly and accurately with a purpose, and can make nuanced plays like controlling a puck with her skate or gently nudging it around a defender to an open teammate. It was also due to the other two being more effective, at least in this game, then the average player for the visitors. Had Frost sent either Heise or Grace out there saying, "We need you to score on this shift," then she would have scored on that shift.
Don't read too much into this exhibition about the Gophers as a whole. Each goalie played a clean period. King had to make the toughest saves, but that could partially be that being smaller, she has to move more to deny a chance that Pahl can stop just by being on her angle.
All the D were fine at this level, and could look to score without having to worry about anyone covering the point. Hopefully, the team will be more aware of such things going forward. Upon my first in-person look at Laitinen, she appears rather slight, so I'd guess that her biggest adjustment may be trying to move or tie up the likes of Britta Curl, but she's already had to deal with that at the international level. The play that stood out to me was on a third-period breakout when she dished it to Norcross (?) on the left wing and the latter turned around to look for the puck at the same time that it was floating onto her stick. It is nice when a player makes a fundamental play, trusting that her teammate will make one as well. That she can do so after a week (assuming that's how long they've been practicing) is a good sign that she's been playing on quality teams.
In theory, they have a month to get up to speed to be ready for OSU. Of course, we've all seen that BSUs, MSUs, and SCSUs can ruin your day when you fail to show up ready to play, no matter what talent gap exists.

Quite a few of us played against her many times in the SuperRink adult league for the Rubes hockey team when she played for the "Mudhens".

The Women have their second (and final) exhibition game tonight against the Whitecaps. The game is at 6:00 and admission is again free. Looks like the roster on the Whitecap’s web site is still from last season. Might be better looking at some of this summer’s news stories to see who might be on the ice tonight.
If going to the game is still too expensive, looks like it will be on the BTN+ app.
The season starts for real next weekend when Bemidji comes to town.

I’m not sure if I’m super excited the women were able to beat the Whitecaps or super concerned the Whitecaps lost to a college team

The women have had nicer sweaters than the men for several years now. The old school goldy ones are just amazing.

If Heise is going to dangle around all 5 Mankato skaters thru the offensive zone in order to score up 7-0 in the third period, then she owes us some effectiveness against Ohio State, Wisconsin, UMD and in the postseason.
Not many players have been Taylor made to produce more against the weaker teams than the good teams than Heise.
All due respect, and she's a great player, but just sayin'.
11-0 final. Hitting on all
cylinders today
Mankato's goaltenders look like they have no business playing D1 hockey. Several of those goals were as weak as they come (especially goals 3 and 5). Woof.
This same Mankato team only lost to #1 ISU by one goal twice to start the year and then lost to UND last week in it and 2-0
So either it was a really bad weekend for them, or this Gopher team could be special.
As play went on Abigail was standing in the crease pointing at the net going "hey man, that puck went in right there" ?
Abigail comes from the school where, when someone scores they stop play..lol
Gophers up 2-0 over SCSU 5 minutes in.
Gophers up 3-0 10 minutes in.
Gophers are now 100-3-3 all time vs SCSU.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Few over the last decade were as competitive as today's game was.
Idalski will get them playing a lot better than they have. Will be interesting to see if they eclipse Mankato for the 5th best team in the league in a year or two, or if St. Thomas takes a big step forward.
This year, even allowing for the fact that MSU has to be better than it showed versus the Gophs, it's hard to see the Mavericks finishing above SCSU. Maybe if the Huskies suffer injuries on par with the Mavs losing Wilgren, but otherwise, no. However, I've been surprised before by what happens when these bottom half teams meet H2H.
This is the first of maybe 20 "big" games for the Gophers this season, although if you lose "smaller" games, they can have a big impact. How do fans feel heading into it? On the negative side, we've only gotten the better of OSU in Muzzy's first and third seasons since she's been there. Positively, we've had leads in many of the H2H games that we've lost. I think it comes down to playing solid defensively and limiting mistakes, because OSU has capitalized on a high percentage of our breakdowns in recent years. Barring that or in addition to it, a high level of play from Skylar Vetter, and/or Makayla Pahl if she gets in, would be most welcome.
On the bright side in Columbus

Really impressed by Vetter so far. She stole the #1 job from Pahl and shows zero interest in giving it back.
Tough to follow the puck in this women's game with the netting on top of the boards around the entire arena.

I'm just happy I can see the game on normal tv. Silver lining, and all.

Ohio State has ratcheted up the intensity tremendously and the Gophers have to meet it. But they really don't want to.
They're going to have to if they want to beat Ohio State when it matters.
Right now icing is our only play...lol
Still up 2-1 after two periods, by the skin of our teeth.
But..we showed some signs of life toward the end of the period. It would be nice to make some kind of statement in the third that we can step up and meet the Buckeye intensity.
That helps...let's do this.

Parade to the penalty box has derailed the hell out of this one.

Solid weekend away from home against the No. 1 ranked Buckeyes. Each team now has a legitimate claim to the top spot in this week's poll. But more importantly for the Gophers they won the series and remain undefeated heading into this week's series against a talented Bulldog squad. Certainly no time for over-confidence.
GO GOPHERS!
