I know some had wished that after a year in Canada he might have played for the Gophers. I always said no way because the way his parents have shaped his career as well as his brothers. Well, now it is official he won't be coming anywhere to play college.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
Well, sadness of not getting Davidson aside...
The U17's World Challenge is going on up in Sarnia, ON. The US had a really good result in their warm up game with Canada White, lost in a shootout but lead most of the game. I think they should do very well against kids their own age vs getting beat on by kids 2-3 yrs older than them in the USHL. The goalies (Carrithers / Smith) played well the previous wknd vs Dubuque (didn't get much offensive support) and played well vs Canada (I'll excuse the 3 goals in second half as they split the game and coming in cold sux for a goalie). The D are all finally healthy now and their forwards don't have to worry about guys 50 lbs heavier than them smushing them into the boards.
Watched the Elite League AS Team vs Shattuck yesterday, good game with Elite League winning in OT. I think the Gophs should take a look at his older brother Brooks who will be a Sr at Moorhead. Good size (6'), skates well, good hands and very high hockey IQ. Get the older Cullen and maybe it helps get his two younger brothers to campus as well? I also liked the Ayers-Assad kid from Holy Angels, tough as nails and all around good player. Mason Minor also made his presence known, really like his game. Did not know a lot about the Solomon kid coming into the season but he seems to be the real deal, he's a scorer and maybe there is still time to wrestle him away from Wisconsin? The Hauser kid's stock is also rising, late 07 and is a Jr this year.
someone on twitter claimed that we had a Moorhead player on campus for a visit. If true, I think realistically it could only have been either Brooks Cullen or Brandon Mickelson.
What about Zimmerman, he's a beast and led Moorhead in scoring last year.
I could be wrong but I don’t think Sophomores are allowed to do any sort of visit at this point.
Ah, ok. He's a May '08 birthday so maybe parents sent him to school late if he's only a 10th grader this year.
I see on Twitter that the U17's added a forward (Varga kid from Kelowna in WHL, Chi Mission last year) up in Canada....so who got hurt then?
Berchild missed last game I think
Berchild missed last game I think
That's a huge blow if he's hurt. Trottier also missing from lineup card last night. That's two important players not in the lineup.
They lost to Canada Red last night 3-6 (two EN's for Canada) so they kept it close.
A few decommitments have started to pop up on USHL rosters lately.
These are the Minnesotans I’ve noticed and some that have already been shared:
Tanner Bruender - formerly NMU
John Stout - formerly UMD
Sam Scheetz - formerly Vermont
Jayden Veney - formerly Union
Landen Gunderson - formerly WMU
I’m curious what’s the story behind Stout. His numbers don’t seem to warrant UMD pulling the offer, so maybe he drove this. I always liked his decision making, but foot speed wasn’t the best. I thought he looked a lot like Koster on the ice but a little slower. Seems to be adjusting to the USHL just fine.
Stout and Gunderson would be the guys of interest in that group, I would think. Maybe Veney if they want a project, but Maceo is already in the pipeline.
I have no insight as to why Stout is no longer committed to UMD, but it’s certainly concerning. He was 1st team all metro & won the Reed Larson award along with anchoring a AA state championship team. If the last few years, the Dogs have had a number of high end players transfer after playing in Duluth (too). They've got to land high level recruits who aren’t from Hermantown or Warroad. They’ve also taken a dive regarding the impact of their Canadian recruits the past 5 years. Stout should be a solid D1 player for whomever lands him.A few decommitments have started to pop up on USHL rosters lately.

Bob was playing chess while we were playing checkers!
⬆️ When I got over the dizzy spell I got from watching the above video my brain went back to the days of Larry Olimb.
Wyatt Cullen feels like the prize from the group, though cannot say I know much about the others. Will be interesting to see if any follow in dad's footsteps or blaze their own trail.
Blaine kid got roasted in the tiktok comments. Hopefully he has thick skin and teammates have his back.⬆️ When I got over the dizzy spell I got from watching the above video my brain went back to the days of Larry Olimb.
Pretty soft one on the goalie's part as well since he saw it coming the whole way.

The U17's had mixed results last weekend in Sarnia at the U17 World Challenge. I had high hopes for them going into the tourney. After they only lost 3-4 in a SO to Canada White in a exhibition / warmup game I was like alright, here we go. They did beat a good Czechia team in OT in the qtrs but then got roughed up by Canada Red in the semis 3-7. They dropped the 3rd place game 4-5 to Sweden in OT finishing with a record of 2-3. I think Plante was the only kid from NTDP to make all-tourney team with 9 pts (2G - 7A).
John stout to wiscy apparently
Brooks Cullen to Michigan State....damn Nightengale stole my idea!
Clearly posturing for the other brothers, will be interesting to see if it works. As far as Brooks goes, we aren’t missing anything. Doubt he ever dresses for MSU.
It does feel like a gambit to land Wyatt and the others. Curious if it works...as is Brooks Cullen feels like a player whose junior career you wait to see prior to extending an offer.
Nightingale has a direct pipeline to NTDP, that’s why he refused to let commit Cullen Potter come in a year early, there’s no way he’d jeopardize burning his bridge to NTDP. Obviously they’re positioning themselves to land his two younger bros, one on the U17 team, the other a 9th grader & the biggest prize. Since Matt Cullen is not a Gopher alum (Parrish relishes retelling the recruiting story involving himself, Cullen & the Wooger) it’s likely a solid strategy by Nightingale. It does feel like a gambit to land Wyatt and the others. Colby Cohen said he heard Michael Misa to MN! That would be epic!
Coach Motzko continuing his Canadian pipeline?
Lately our goalies have been Canadian, Wood and hopefully now Misa.

Do you have a timestamp for him talking about to MN?
(I found it, it is at 11:45. Cohen talks about how there is not a deal at BU and he would know because he is the head of the collective.)
Lol, I highly doubt it, but that would be insane. Biggest recruit in over a year.
Skeptical this has legs but would be happy to be pleasantly surprised.
Not quite Michael Misa, but has anybody seen Jackson Rudh? He’s off to an incredible start at STA. 20 pts in 5 games.
Woods primary goal at Juniors camp is to be in Misa’s ear. Have him sell the program, recruit from within
Misa isn't part of the under 20 Canadian Juniors.
Misa is 17 years old and the tournament is generally 19 year olds with some 18 year olds.
Would be nice to Misa be Gopher, but pretty doubtful that happens. I know some are excited about CHL kids coming down to play college hockey, but I have two questions about that since there seems to be a lot of confusion. Maybe Ski-U-Mah Law or Vegoe could best answer.
1) It is my understanding that when foreign kids come to the US to go to school they are on Student Visa's, per Federal Law not the NCAA they are not eligible to earn income while on a student visa. If that is the case wouldn't that preclude them from earning NIL money or Revenue Sharing when that begins since both will be considered taxable income?
2) With the coming of revenue sharing, to participate in that don't you have to pay into the settlement and if you choose not to then you cannot offer revenue sharing to your athletes.
Thanks
Paging @skiumahlaw to the "Gopher Recruiting" thread.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
Surely, we have to have a forward recruit fall soon. If not I think we will have some considerable transfers or if he does make a splash with chl prospects. This roster loses Snuggerud, wood (most likely), probably one of lamb/kurth, huglen, nevers, and j mittelstadt. I don't see enough of the current recruits to fill those gaps next year...

Do you mean Michel instead of Mittelstadt?
We graduate Nevers, Huglen, and Michel.
We will also lose Snuggerud and likely at least one, possibly two, of Wood, Moore, Lamb.
So anywhere from 4-6 slots to fill up front.
Who are the F recruits slated to come in next year – Moore and Townsend? Reid?

Players signed to their NLI's are forwards Kvasnicka, Mooney, Townsend, & Moore with Defensemen Phillips, Grimes, Rombach.
Nevers may have signed his as well. Hayden Reid is an option. So that could potentially be 5/6 F's so far, with 6+ forwards to maybe fill. So, there will be a few more adds ( maybe a Canadian or 2 )

@frozen4champs I personally don't see anyone from that forward group having a huge impact year one, that's why I suspect a transfer or two or chl options...
I’d love Bobby Cowan as an option for next year. Recent decommit from UST.

Does reid make it to campus at this point? His point production is even down in CHL. Unless he is a guy who agreed to low scholarship amount I guess...
@gopher-fan-26 as of what we’ve seen so far, I’d expect Moore and Wood both back. Kurth will also be back unless he wants to move on, which I’d doubt as he’s not an NHL caliber guy at least at this point.
Lamb I think is an interesting question as he hasn’t been real high on any prospect boards I’ve seen but he’s really blossomed this year. Don’t think it’s a big push from the rangers to sign him though as he’d probably slot AHL and they’ll maybe feel they can wait on him.

Reid and Grimes committed around the same time, I didn't understand it then and I don't really now. You could make an argument for Grimes but they seem like pretty low level players for non-Minnesota guys. Usually they reach a little higher with that group.

Grimes look to be a good 3/4 year player but reid hasn't done enough for me to justify making it to campus especially with 100s new potential recruits from CHL becoming an option

I agree on Moore just not quite ready yet. Wood would be a huge suprise, very low percentage of players first round don't sign to their drafted team... There will be a chance for one if not both kurth and lamb to sign so we'll see how it plays out
Is Mason West planning on playing hockey or football?
Is Mason West planning on playing hockey or football?
Feels like he has higher upside in hockey. His current football offers are from MAC schools (still a great accomplishment - no shade there) but hockey could offer brighter pro potential.
I am pretty high on Grimes. Feels like a solid, all-situations player who lacks flash yet is ever reliable. Reid I can see questions on; guessing he is a low scholarship guy slated for the bottom 6 but you can also find those guys later in the process.

Cowan has been fantastic at Madison this year. Curious if he winds up at a blue blood soon. Tough loss for St. Thomas.

I agree it would be odd, but i also don’t know if i see Nashville telling him he’s slotting into the nhl right away and he’s very young at 19. Definitely is one I could see coming back and then having his pick of the best situation for him

It is doubtful that a first round draft pick will play his 4th eligible college year. The Predators will not want to lose a prospect they spent such a high pick on and it is significantly to Matt's advantage to get his contract signed as soon as possible to start the clock ticking on his second NHL contract.
It would be different if Wood wasn't having a good season and that there were issues he could correct. But he can fix those at the AHL level.
Lamb is a different story as a 4th round pick. Staying his senior year would allow him to both improve his value and also choose an organization with the most potential for him.

No totally get what yall are saying. Will be same question the Wild have to answer with Stramel this year.

Ive really liked Grimes from my limited viewings of him. I think it’s one of those things where you let him do his thing in juniors for another year and get a 19 year old 3-year USHL vet as a freshman. He’s still a senior in high school. Looking at the box score doesn’t always do him justice. Major upside imo.
As for Reid though idk. Probably a Jonny Sorenson bottom 6 energy guy. Let him max his junior eligibility before coming in. Same with Nevers.
