Stramel?

Stramel?
Biggest question is --where will he fit here? Is he better off going to a mid tier school where he can be a top 2 center? The Wild drafted him as a center, and I'm sure that is where they want him. Moore will be #1, and Clark and Huglen will be 2-3, although both can play wing. Pahlsson is a center. I'm just glad I don't have to be making these recruiting decisions.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
I do not see a ton of appeal for Stramel to come here, nor much for the staff to go after him. As outlined above, another situation likely a better fit.

If Wood comes here and Snuggie staying, we literally do not have a place for him.
Rather have Whitelaw, talent wise anyway.
Rather have neither according to Jup
🤷🏼♂️
What is everyone's thoughts on Kam Hendrickson? Best goalie in MN for high school. Follows up 6 games in USHL for the worst team sitting with a .926 save percentage. I do not know him personally but I have watched him play a bunch. Seen him without pads in and looks to be 6'2 180lbs. Would love to see him committ to home town.

I wouldn't recruit a goalie until they start playing juniors full-time. If you miss out on goalies that way, so be it. But I do like what I've seen from him so far.
It’s kinda funny Bob’s track record with goalies is either absolute home runs or complete misses. LaFontaine/Close in the W column and Pichora, Boynton, Bartoskziewicz in the other
8 Minnesotans and I can all but tell you where they’re gonna end up in college lol:
Nelson - Notre Dame
Plante - UMD
Fransisco - UMD
Cullen - St. Cloud
Berchild - Minnesota
Trottier - Minnesota
Lutner - Minnesota
Carrithers - no idea
I don't think Cullen is a slam dunk for Jan. Matt had a great relationship with Motzko from what I remember.

I agree. Wouldn’t count out the green team as well. The current state of affairs at St. Clpud State University can’t make it easy to get recruits there in general.

Enrollment is up and admin believes the ship has been righted. The UMN Medical School in St. Cloud will lead to growth in the nursing and medical programs at SCSU. It isn't what it was 15 years ago, but it also didn't have Glen Taylor writing checks like Mankato.
Brett Larson and his staff are very good coaches. Dave Shyiak is a great guy. The women's program is on the rise also.
All that said, the NHC is falling behind as a facility and the student section isn't rabid unless they are playing the Gophers or North Dakota. The NIL game is nonexistent.
Rumors of its demise are greatly exaggerated, but I don't know that it would be a draw over other schools under consideration.
Dierks Bentley's son Knox was in Mn this past weekend for a youth hockey tourney. His team placed 2nd in his age group and he toured the Mariucci locker room. Will be fun to see how he develops and if he grows into a D1 hockey prospect. He has plenty of time.
Dierks is a country music singer and avid hockey fan who plays in an adult league in Nashville for those who are not familiar with him.

He was also at the games on Thursday. I managed to get a picture with him! Really nice guy
After his son decides to play for the Gophers.
We start playing Dierks Bentley's song What was I thinkin' at home games. Each time the song gets to the part where he says What was I thinkin'
On the scoreboard a Sue, Badger or Wolverine player is shown with a thought bubble over their head that says - What was I thinkin' when I decided to play for the Sue/Badgers/Wolverines. 😉 🤣
Rhys Wallin commits to UMass.

Weren’t many GPLers high on him? I feel like I heard good things about the kid. Any insight into why he’s not going to Minnesota?

From what I know the fact he didn’t commit means we never offered. As much as I love his game, he isn’t an irreplaceable loss. August Falloon is cut from the same cloth.
Lots of representation from Rogers. Two goalies and both from Andover. Fun to see the representation from each program.
moorhead always has a few as well.
WHL U.S. Priority Draft just completed. Nine Minnesotans taken. Youth Hockey Hub story with some background on some of the players.
First time throwing a post in this thread - but I have a thought/concern. I love the way Bob puts his roster together (my post in the offseason thread and how deep the upcoming 2024 roster with NHL draft talent). Seems like a guy that can really piece the puzzle together and might have an eye for players that will stick for 2-3 years or more that may not get the first round draft buzz.
But... The Minnesota kids. Looking at the upcoming 2024 and 2025 drafts, I see us pulling the 3rd round + draft talent. We seem to be missing the (2024) top ranked MN metro skaters that naturally were Gophers of days past - Ralph (MG to SCSU), Kleber (Chaska to UMD), Zellers (Shattuck/MG to UND - OUCH LOVE THIS KID), Burrows (Orono/Tonka to Denver - ANOTHER OUCH), Fisher (Woodbury to Denver), McMorrow (Lakeville to Denver), and Stout (Tonka to UMD). Feels like Denver is grabbing metro kids that should be on the Gopher radar (I get the draw with the championship pedigree) and UMD/SCSU are finding top local skaters that we should be in on too. UND gets the northern kids that make me jealous, and then a guy like Zellers. 2025 Logan Hensler (Woodbury) seems like a huge blue chip loss to Wisco - instead we get Mooney whose Cooley connection is awesome but he is not a MN kid.
I love Brodie Ziemer. Jury is out on Javon Moore until we see him in the USHL. Would've loved to see a third recruit in the group I mentioned above... Does our depth hurt us in pulling these guys or is it a legacy/teammate/school connection that I'm blind to?
If we pull Berchild, Trottier, Lutner, etc. Sure, disregard this.
Big vote for Kam Hendrickson to be the first starting caliber Minnie goalie to join us since Wilcox? Before him Patterson?
I'll add this for comment - the following 2025 recruits are "whys" for me:
- Jacob Rombach - D (is it because he is a huge defensemen? Production questionable but I like that he is a MN kid) Tell me what you know!
- Matthew Grimes - D (I don't know anything about him... East coast makes me nervous)
- Hayden Reid - F (A rare Canadian skater - again, I don't know anything about him. Why was he on the recruiting radar?)
Matthew Grimes and Hayden Reid are really good players. Why does it matter where they were born?
I have a feeling Gopher fans will enjoy having Canadian Matthew Wood on the team this coming season.
If there’s one area that’s not a concern under Motzko it’s recruiting.
Gophers are bringing in a deep class this year which also happens to be the first without a 1st rounder since 2020. Nonetheless they’re a good crop of college talent. After that they follow it up with Mooney, Phillips, Kvasnicka, etc.
We’re doing A-OK

As far as Rombach goes, scouts just raved about him last recruiting cycle and said he was just barely scratching the surface of his potential as a mobile shutdown D who breaks pucks out and gets the puck moving north quickly.
Grimes was hurt for much of the season but being a USHL tender means you can seriously play cause that USHL gave up their first round pick to sign you and play you as a 16 year old.
I know nothing about Reid.

I wouldn’t trade Ziemer, Hendrickson and Moore for Fisher, McMorrow and Burrows. No way. You say we’re getting out recruited, I say we’re doing very very well. Can’t get them all.
I have a feeling Gopher fans will enjoy having Canadian Matthew Wood on the team this coming season.
Came here to make this same comment. I doubt anyone will care where Wood is from when/if he is scoring big goals.

There will never be a head coach at the U who will hit on every kid, etc. The two vets of the staff (Motzko and Miller) have landed a lot of high end guys over their careers. The scouting and relationship building aspect is a grind and the only thing that I ever get concerned about with any coach (mainly the assistants) is if he still has the fire in him to do that kind of work. I don't worry about them identifying the talent and being able to attract high interest for the program... it is about how hard you want to work the relationships, etc. As long as that fire is there, they will be in a good shape. I don't see any indication that this staff doesn't have that.

you mean just like no one cared about Cooley being from Penn or Knies from AZ? This whole obsession on being "from Minnesota" is super outdated. get the best players that fit no matter where they're from. the game has exploded around the country (which is a very very good thing)
Agreed. I think the team should be mostly Minnesota kids. It is now. And I don't see that changing any time soon. A handful of people from outside the state or the country isn't a big deal.I have a feeling Gopher fans will enjoy having Canadian Matthew Wood on the team this coming season.

B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

Article on Edina’s football/hockey prospect Mason West.
EP’s Mason Moe leads all MN players in scoring at the USA S17 camp and should be a lock for the USA Hlinka Gretzky team. Many believe he will be a Gopher come August.
Current commit Gavin Katz is 2nd right behind Moe.

Could have posted in the Committed thread.
Let’s hope the Gophers can land Mason Moe.

I've heard that there are quite a few bigger name football programs also showing interest than just some MAC schools. A bit more high end on the football side than Anders Lee was.
Seemed that a few hockey schools were hesitant with Lee; will be interesting to watch West's recruitment play out.
