Parrish is a chore to listen to my goodness
And he’s a douche!
He's just like this Rick Haley guy we've talked about being a db of an UND fan. Parrish has such bitterness and hate towards the Gophers, cause he couldn't get into "U" or wasn't on the Gophers top recruiting list. And in reality it might have worked out better for him. At SCSU he was one of the top dogs on the team and had an NHL career. Maybe with the Gophers, he might have been just another fish in the pond and who knows what kind of NHL career.
He is nothing like Rick Haley, he is definitely not a douche and I am about as certain as possible he got over his bitterness towards the U and even Wooger a long time ago. (he is married to a former Gopher Cheerleader I believe who still supports the team and the U in general) I doubt if given the choice he would trade going to SCCC for the U. He does a lot of stuff with the U of M when it comes to charity and if you follow his wife on Twitter you can sometimes see him even sporting maroon and gold at football games. If you ever get a chance to talk to him you will see he is about the nicest dude you will ever meet. I have been fortunate over the years to meet a lot of different type of celebrities (local, national, sports, actors...etc.) and I will say without a moments hesitation he was the nicest celeb I ever met both times in just random situations. (not a signing or photo op where he needed to be nice) One time he was hung over to hell (obviously before he sobered up) in an elevator in Las Vegas the day after SCCC lost in the Frozen Four. I told him I was sorry (I was decked out in Maroon and Gold so he could have easily blew me off or took it as being a dick) but he damned near broke down crying talking about how bad he felt for the kids, how he knows how much it sucks to never really win the big one and that he just hopes they enjoyed the ride. No pretense, no BS, just a fan and alumnus talking to another fan about the game. When I told my SO who he was and about his career she came away super impressed and she is not often impressed. (which is why she is with me!)
Wooger screwed up with him and Cullen.
Thanks for your side and opinions. Good to hear that. I guess my takes on him are more from the ‘Power Trip’ morning show. And from what I heard from others. So thank you for showing another side of Parrish.
Keep your stick on the ice...

Hard to say whether Parrish was even recruited by the Gophers given the wealth of talent on that 1993 Jefferson squad. He likely wasn't even the best player on that team, even though he had the best pro career. The Gophers had these players from that same roster: Mike Crowley, Nick Checco, and Brian LaFleur. There were about 4 other players that had good D1 careers from that Jefferson squad as well.
Parrish is 2nd all time in goals at Jefferson 1993-1995.Parrish is a chore to listen to my goodness

I don’t know much about the Parrish recruiting situation, but from everything I’ve read and heard Cullen decided pretty early and pretty definitively he wanted to go to SCSU. Not sure Woog had much of a chance of landing him.

My memory could be failing me, but I recall everyone talking about the big miss from those Jefferson teams at the time being Toby Peterson, whom I believe wound up at Colorado College.

That is different than the way I heard it...but it was well after the fact so who knows what is true or not true.
Toby Peterson was pretty awesome for CC. Toby for Hobey was a common catchphrase. That CC team under Lucia was fun to watch and was why I was all in on the U going after him when Wooger was done. Most seemed to want Blais but I was drilling at the prospect of Gopher recruits skating and paint like that. I did a happy dance the day he was hired. (I was at the U at the time)

I've heard similar things about Parrish from those I know who have had run-ins with him across the cities. I've never met him personally but have a couple friends who have met him and have nothing but nice things to say about how kind and genuine he was.
I personally feel like the Gopher bitterness is partly over-the-top shtick at this point. Like Handy said - he had a phenomenal career at SCSU and a very good pro career in the NHL. It feels like he takes jabs at the Gophers just because he knows it riles people up sometimes and he wants SCSU to get more love in the state, like any player would.
Parrish luvs to tell the story of Woog telling him he couldn’t skate…they went with his linemate at Jefferson (Mike Anderson) and later discussing with Matt Cullen (how Woog told Cullen he couldn’t shoot) lol….I think Parrish tells the story (largely) to rile up Gopher fans…doubt he had any bitterness (at least over time) with Wooger. He’s not the greatest announcer (we all can see that on display) but I think he’s a pretty good guy. I got to meet him once at the (old) Penalty Box establishment in Ramsey & he just acted like a regular guy…no airs about him whatsoever.
My issue with Parrish lies solely on his broadcasting “prowess”, or lack thereof. I’m sure he’s a great guy.

Yeah, I was all in on Gophers hiring Lucia at the time too. And all in on Motzko replacing him. Hopefully Motzko brings us a couple of championships before he’s done like tDon did.
Anyone remember the reason he bolted SCSU for Canadian juniors after two seasons?

Anyone remember the reason he bolted SCSU for Canadian juniors after two seasons?
He said on an Islander podcast a few weeks back when Cullen turned pro he was ready to sign with the Avalanche but couldn't get a deal done, didn't really see the point in going back to college, and the WHL was more pro-styled than college so he decided to see what he could do there.
This wasn't mentioned on the podcast but back then you could become a free agent if you left college and played a full year in the CHL, and Parrish did that and signed with Florida. (See also: Ben Clymer.)

Wow all the big broadcasting talent goes the major junior rout?
Reminder Javon Moore and the Skippers will be facing the Wayzata Trojans on Bally tomorrow night for those who have it.

Did anyone watch the Tonka v. Wayzata game tonight? If so, did Javon Moore stand out at all?

Didn't watch the game but did stumble onto this. Some impressive passing in this one.
Just curious, what number is he?

Fantastic numbers in the BCHL
He’s an ‘03 so will come in next season. That tells me a couple of things: 1) Close is gone (hopefully with a ring on his finger) 2) Probably no Musser. 3) Barto and Airey probably split time next year.
Big goaltender, Elite prospects has him at 6 foot 3 inches. Seems like a good pickup to me.
I like that both Barto and Airey are bigger guys
So do we roster 4 goalies next year? Pichora still listed as committed. Bartoskziewicz, Airey, Pichora, Wiese.
I am skeptical we see Pichora. His development seemingly went sideways, though goalies are notoriously weird. Feel like Airey/Barto/Wiese are the three.
03s can still play another year of juniors so both Pichora and Airey could be deferred another year. 02s are in their last year.
Javon Moore has all the tools. Big and strong with good hands but he does defer to his teammates more often than not. I don’t mind it because I think he appears to be a very team focused guy. Seems like a guy that may not put up a ton of points before he gets to the U but will look great surrounded by better players. I think Moore is a little more skilled but could see him similar to a Mason Nevers.
I think this shows Bob’s ability to recruit. If you look at the players he continues to bring in, it appears to me he puts a ton of thought into the role of a player and formulating a true team and not just a bunch of the same type of “star” players. This is what many have stated was the issue with tDon in the end.
as Herbie would say, “I’m not looking for the best ones, I’m looking for the right ones”
The CoVid year seems to be made for goalies of Close's mold...undersized, overachieving, probably limited in professional options past the ECHL. If Airey can play another year of juniors, bring him in as a 21 year old freshman, and let Close have his CoVid year. Seems like a solid play

Exactly, I’d be shocked if they promised Airey a roster spot next year. Unless Close has already stated he’s gone, which I also think is unlikely. I feel like that may be why they didn’t lock down Musser, they couldn’t promise him next year.
Agreed with above on Javon Moore. Great hands for a big guy, seems like a pass first player. Definitely doesn't lack talent.

I would agree with everything you are saying, and that would make the most sense to me. However, his post does say "play hockey at the U next year". Who knows if that is certain though.

Ahhh, I didn’t read the post in detail. Maybe it’s a 80-90% chance with a little wiggle room if Close does decide to come back.
Part of the reason I think Airey comes in next season is because he’d age out of juniors in the middle of the BCHL playoffs (April birthday). Plus he’s already played 3 years of juniors and said he’s coming in next year in his commitment post.
Javon Moore needs to be put on the Sampo Ranta meal plan when he gets to Dinkytown. I could see him having a similar career to Sampo. May take him a bit to figure out how to use his size, but once he does, look out.

I agree that it’s very likely he comes in next year, but I’m 99% sure he can play another full year of juniors next year. I’ve always understood juniors to be birth year specific. All 02s are eligible for the full year of juniors currently.
There are 21 year olds sprinkled around the NAHL and USHL rosters.

Ah, ok
1. I think Justen should come back next year. If we win the National Championship, he can be the Gopher goalie who repeated. If we don't win, then he can go for the ring. Where does he gain the bigger name, as the starting goalie of a top college team or the unknown entity floating in the minor leagues looking for a shot?
2. I think the Airey decision can be independent of what Close does. I am sure that if Airey is the Gopher future in goal they can work him in next season. It has been a few years since we ahd this goalie situation but in 2017-18 they brought Mat Robson in when they had Eric Schierhorn as an established goalie.
And look at Robson as an example. Professional sports are a huge leap even from the high level D1 college programs. Matt Robson left the U after two seasons to turn pro. He got a solid year in Iowa in the AHL, then the covid year abroad, then a split AHL/ECHL year and now he is in another foreign league, LIgue Magnus. I guess he is getting a paycheck. Perhaps my view is not objective, but I hate to see it when our kids jump to the professional level and then spend their careers bouncing around in the minors and foreign leagues.
I’ve been wanting Close to come back all year but now with the Airey commitment I don’t know. Close, Bartoskziewicz, Airey is a stacked goalie group and I fear if this does end up happening that one of the latter two heads for the portal, which I’d hate to see.
If Close wins a ring this season I’d be fine if he rode off into the sunset.
The more I dig around the bigger this goalie commitment looks. Leads the BCHL in most major stats, attended Calgary Flames development camp as an invitee, and it sounds like there was a long list of schools that wanted him.
Nice pickup
