I saw those jerseys on the Gopher online store on Sat and thought “man I hope we play in those”. The Boomer derision makes me like them even more.
link? I’m into them so I’d definitely get one if they’re well made

Where did you see these for sale? I’d be shocked they made replicas already.
I'm thinking he might be talking about those Colosseum Black jerseys on Fanatics?

Correct, I like those better than these but same idea
The Gophers have good marketing, including good social media marketing, but even good marketing can't save what is objectively ugly. The grays were awful with the football team and they remain awful on the hockey team. I'm all for a few fun alternatives but these aren't it, especially considering how many great jerseys of the past you could resurrect. Tribute to the Iron Range? Why not bring back some of the jerseys from the Mayasich or Mariucci eras (our two most famous Iron Ranger alumni). In any case, I agree that if they get the players fired up then I can live with it.
Jerseys aside, I'm more concerned about the injuries heading into next weekend. Hopefully some of the guys are more day to day than long-term and still have a shot of making it into the lineup as the coming week progresses. Wood missing this series to practice with team Canada is a real head-scratcher, though. You'd think he'd miss a few practices instead.
I dont think those words have ever been spoken before.

B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
True and there are other factors like the team becoming way better/consistent and a lot of the games being on fox9 (which also means more ads on local tv).
A condensed version of the weekly media availability. They cut out most of Bob's comments. @eric-vegoe was there so I'm sure he will fill us in on the podcast.

As confident as I was heading into last weekend, I’m pretty nervous heading into this upcoming weekend. I think these teams are pretty even when both are healthy but take 6 players off one team while the other remains at full strength? It’s gonna take something special imo to pull out even one win, let alone two. Just how I see it🤷♂️.
On the other hand Sparty hasn’t won here since before Covid so maybe chalking up 2 wins for them isn’t the safest bet either. I said it earlier and I’ll say it again I’ll be really happy with a split this weekend. Not often I say that for a home series.
This team is built through their D core. If they can shut down MSU like they did Michigan, they’ll have more than enough goal scoring to pull it out even with 3 lines. Losing Thomas hurts though. Goaltending gonna need to be on point this series.
I don't mind the jersey's they will be wearing Friday, change it up a bit.
For the series, I think it comes down to if some of our key injured guys can give it a go this weekend or not, if they can even without Thomas we should be fine. Heal up for a 2nd half run boys!

This. And this is why this team a damn tough out in the postseason. They’re dedicated and know how to play in that end even more so than the 22-23 team who tried against some teams but it wasn’t a strength (esp postseason given they hadn’t had to do it much all year). This team can do it across multiple lines which will be huge come year end that they’re tested in this way

Anyone else have trouble with the channel five videos crapping out and reloading and the drag bar won’t work so you have to rewatch the whole thing if you want to hear it all? They’ve all been crappy for me. 🤷♀️

Bob went a little early this week for availability because they only went about 45 minutes on the ice instead of the usual 1 hr 15 min. I think KSTP got there right at the usual time.
Hope we covered enough of it on the podcast for the GPL'ers. The big thing is Huglen will play this weekend. Thomas is unlikely. Pahlsson is skating, but won't be back. They'll be missing Falloon and Nevers due to injury and Wood to Canada camp. Begley will skate up front, but I think it looks like 11 forwards for the weekend.
Huglen playing is huge. I’m guessing he’s playing through some sort of minor concussion. My guess is he wouldn’t be playing if the rest of the team wasn’t so ravaged with injuries.
Ziemer-Moore-Snuggerud
Hendrickson-Clark-Kurth
J Mittelstadt-Huglen-Lamb
Michel-Begley
Koster-Chesley
L Mittelstadt-Gruba
Whipple-Rinzel
Rud
Airey/Souliere
This lineup looks much much better with Huglen on the 3rd line instead of Michel.
@maroon_and_gold there’s no way they’re letting him “play through” a minor concussion. Either he’d be cleared or not. I’m guessing more it’s pain and wouldn’t be surprised if he’s dealing with the back pain and radiculopathy he dealt with earlier in his career (that almost ended his playing career) and feels it’s improved enough to go.
edit: this is based on seeing the hit and weird contortion his body went through while not braced. Thought neck/back looked like they got bundled up
@upnorthkid Absolutely. Malpractice if he was not cleared of concussion symptoms and he was playing. Great to see him back; head/neck/back injuries are no joke.
Huglen being back is huge, probably the most important player of that group that was questionable to play.
I’m guessing he’s playing through some sort of minor concussion.
If they're letting him play, it's because he's not exhibiting any signs of a concussion. In the post-Boogaard/CTE hockey world, concussions are no longer a "you can play through it" thing especially at the amateur level.

Yeah you’re probably right. If there’s any question about his head they’d hold him out. I still doubt he’s 100% so whatever type of injury he sustained Friday he’s probably gutting it out this weekend.
Agreed. While this is not the lineup we would hope to have for the toughest test of the season this half, this lineup would have most teams thrilled beyond belief. As was previously stated, this team is backend first and hopefully can hold to that plan this weekend as well. I think they are more than capable of giving MSt a run for their money and we really have no excuses for not putting in two strong games at home.
Maybe it’s my Gopher arrogance showing, but I feel confident about this weekend. Empty the tank and let your horses carry you.
I think it’s safe to say the Spartans will prove to be the Gophers top competitor in the BIG Ten this season, should be a fun series. Looking forward to seeing how Wild #1 draft pick Charlie Stramel & ⚡️ #1 draft pick Issac Howard look along with their World Juniors veteran goalie Trey Augustine.
I’m expecting two very tight games. We don’t have the run and gun ability with the short lineup. I think we play defense first and try to win with low scores.

I'm super interested to see how Michigan State tries to play this game. They've got some forwards that probably aren't as disciplined as Minnesota's forwards with how they handle the puck and the Gophers certainly have shown their defense is ready to join the rush on turnovers... I think that difference and special teams will decide the weekend.
Gophers Moneyline: -160
Spartans Moneyline: +124
over/under is 6

Surprised MN is favored that much even while playing at home.

If Minnesota plays two games like last Saturday, they should get at least one win. That's hard to do two days in a row because it was a meat grinder. (Wood is a big loss in a game like this.) The key for Minnesota may be to match State's goaltending.
As impressive as the team looked last Friday with the 6-rip victory, I was more pleased with Saturday's outcome. Each line delivered a tireless forecheck, commitment to defense, and goaltending was solid. They also stood up to Michigan's garbage cheap shotting.
Could be a good opportunity to do an emotional hedge and bet on Sparty if you're in a legal state. I doubt the bookmakers are tracking college hockey injuries very closely.
I would never bet against the Gophers, but -160 is tough so I'd leave that alone. Taking the u on 6 is intriguing though.

most books don’t do enough research on teams, injuries etc as the market is so small. Very easy money to be made betting college hockey early. For those interested, Gophs are +900 to win the FF. Mich St +1200. Some appetizing futures you can easily fade against the ML when they make the tourney.
as far as tonight, money would probably say bet the Spartans given this is much closer to a coin flip but I never bet against the Gophers as it doesn’t make me feel any better if we lose
I think the kicker on your o/u is in theory we will have more gas on Friday compared to Saturday with the short bench. On the season, we have scored more goals in the Airey starts as compared with the Souliere starts 6-1 as well (Alaska the only one with one draw on the WI weekend and the ND weekend being an Airey double start). Whether that's a stylistic thing of them feeling they need to score more or play a more open style with Airey vs packing it in more on Saturday, just something to note. This is all though I agree this seems far more likely to be a low scoring series and MSU doesn't score as much as last year and I'd expect us to try play stifling defense and win on the counter attack rather than be open and aggressive with 2 guys deep on the forecheck.
I'll be eager to see if the Gophs can get after Sparty similarly to the way they did last weekend. Set the tone right from puck drop on Friday night and just get after them. The break couldn't be coming at a better time also - hopefully this weekend goes well and guys can use the time off to rest & recover.

A split and no further injuries works for me.

Part of the reason we were able to jump on Michigan early on Friday was their undisciplined and irresponsible play with the puck. I don’t see MSU playing right into our hands as much as Michigan did.
I thought it was pretty ballsy by Eric, Eric, and Jup calling sweeps this weekend. Idk, with all the missing bodies, if you told me split before the weekend started I’m taking it no questions asked. Would love to be pleasantly surprised.

Not even dressing Rud?
Any chance Wood plays tomorrow. He was cut from team Canada today.
Not even dressing Rud?
it feels like the only possible reasons not to dress him would be injury or redshirting.

At the tournament last year as an 18 year old he played in all 5 Canadian games scoring 4 points (2 goals and 2 assists) and was a +3. I'm surprised he got cut as a 19 year old.
I would think there is a chance if he and his equipment are back in the Twin Cities early enough. Tomorrow's game is at 5 pm. The Gophers are playing quite a few 5 pm home games on Saturdays this year.
I am now picturing Wood doing a Willis Reed at the start of second period. Hopefully there is enough older people who get this reference. 😀

came here to post this also. I hope he’s in maroon and gold tomorrow.
Can’t be chasing games with a short lineup. Scoring first will be huge. Also stay out of the box. No need to gas ourselves even further.
