Definitely a Pedo State first period. MN kind of looked confused by the style of play and basically shooting from anywhere on the ice. Why does this seem to always happen with our team versus P State? Is it just players used to playing with structure against an aggressive reckless style?
IDK, guessing the compete level will increase and they'll be fine.
SNUGGY!!!!!
1-1

🤔 The Gophers have won 8 of last 9 games against Penn State.
Check from behind. 5 minutes?
They can stop with the dog and pony light show after a goal.
Keep your stick on the ice...
5er
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Gopher 5 minute power play.
Penn State this season is 25 for 25 with 3 short handed goals.
Can the Gophers snapped their streak?
Does arm extension what makes that a 5 minute major?
The Gophers have not gotten good wood on their one timers. If they do they will score.

i mean they could also just touch pass it back. Goalie is sliding every time
SNUGGY on the power play!!!!!!!
Gophers 2-1
Shots in the 2nd period were Gophers 17-5. Shots in the 1st period were Penn State 11-9.
Yes Penn State taking a lot of penalties that period what a major factor but when you don't have the puck you are more likely to take penalties.
That's more like it!
What happened to Cal Thomas? Didn’t play in 2nd period.
There have been a lot of pucks around the Penn State net but we have not gotten a rebound goal.
Moore hits the cross bar.
Huglen has been really noticeable tonight. His stick handling is fun to watch.
Clark with a empty netter.
The Jimmys 3
Penn State 1
Looking ahead after an odd game, Does anyone think that Liam S. would love to win tomorrow night against his former team and hopefully, his teammates recognize this fact and come better on Saturday!
A win is a win I don’t care how ugly!
@maroon_and_gold was just going to post the same. Winning these games you are clearly not your best is championship Mettle. Stomp them tomorrow and let’s get off to a 6 point start
If the Gophers only allow 1 goal a game, I will take that every day and twice on Sunday. They do have some things to work on, but it is only Nov 1st. No panic here. The only major criticism is the Goldy mascot. He/she needs some work and the wave should not be allowed in any hockey arena. I don't believe he did the spin your head routine in front of the student section either. That is a must at every game. It is only home game #2, so I will give Goldy some time to improve.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
It may not have been pretty, but they played some good defense. Penn St may have had one scoring chance in the third. That’s winning hockey. The goals will still be there if we play responsible on defense.

the wave is not okay at a hockey game during play. Intermission - I’ll allow it. 😁 I thought the shark was funny!
I know you had a lot of answers already but I didn't see one that described my experience with Big+. I was able to show up late and start from the beginning without seeing the score, etc. However as soon as the game was over and they stopped the feed my feed also stopped. So if you start late you want to make sure you catch up before the end of the game.Another B1G+ question. I've only watched games in real time. If you start streaming late can you go back and start at beginning without knowing score? Or if you tune in after game is over to watch, does app just list the game as so and so vs so and so on this date? Or do they have the score in the title so you can't watch without knowing outcome? Still figuring out this streaming stuff. Wish more games were on TV channels I get so could just record.
I streamed on my computer so I could cast to my Chromecast on my TV, not the app.

Why did they take away his stick and gloves?? I need answers!!
Obviously we could work on our powerplay but the Gophers remained disciplined and limit their own penalties. You know the refs were watching to even things up. Glad to see that.
Penn Goalie is no joke. He was their star of the game easily.
Hopefully, tomorrow we come out strong and dominate.
They were tired from killing penalties in the second period... 🤣It may not have been pretty, but they played some good defense. Penn St may have had one scoring chance in the third. That’s winning hockey. The goals will still be there if we play responsible on defense.
Airey looked very confident and poised.
Pahlsson is strong on the puck. Both he and Wood are very good at manipulating defenders to create space.
Hope Cal Thomas is OK, didn’t see him out there a lot?

You just have to wait a little bit (if I remember correctly, maybe 10-15 minutes) for them to move it to the "replay" category, but then it shows up again.

Bob on the radio postgame said he got injured early in the game and Gruba and Whipple did a fine job filling in. He did not go into details of the extent of the injury.
Bob is also quoted in the Strib about Thomas.
They took it in that first period, when they lost junior defenseman Cal Thomas to what Motzko called a lower-body injury after the game’s opening shifts. Motzko said he didn’t expect Thomas to be available for Saturday night’s rematch.

he overall looks ok in how he’s moving. If he’s out, hopefully something minor/more precautionary
Would guess we do not see Thomas tonight; hopefully a short-term thing. Curious if Rud or Begley would step in or if they roll with 13 forwards.
A few things I noticed in the video. Injury likely happens at the 4 seconds mark we he falls (Thomas #22). When he gets up he doesn't appear to being skating normal from that point on. Him staying on the ice is normally a good sign (thinking he can play through it/skate off what ever is bothering him). At the 25 second mark he tries to skate at top speed when back checking to stay up with his man but hobbles. The injury likely is a factor in why he lost an edge (not as much strength in his ankle/leg) when he has the puck behind the net at the 29 second mark.
I suspect he likely wouldn't play tonight. Obviously any injury is something to be leery of but hopefully him not going off the ice right away when we were moving the puck up ice is a sign that it is not a serious injury.
It's a luxury to have two decent goalies, so there's a fresh goalie each night. If this level of play continues, I'm fine with it, all the way to and including the Frozen Four.
If you asked me last week I would have said it looked like Airey wasn't going to last in the rotation. He looked great last night. It's a luxury to have two decent goalies, so there's a fresh goalie each night. Snuggy the Elder will be signing autographs and taking pictures with fans before the game by section 24.
Airey has played 4 games that count and has a 2.00 GAA and .908 saves %. He has stopped 79 of 87 shots.
One of the goals went in off Chelsey where he had no chance. Without that goal his saves % is .919
He also played the first half of the game at St. Cloud and only gave up one goal. Yes it doesn't count because it was an exhibition game but it is another indication of where he is at.
College Hockey News has added some stats this season to their website. I won't bore everybody (that will likely come later 🤣) by going into details but these stats have Souliere being a bit better so far this season but it is close.

I think Bob likes the luxury to play 7 defenseman, so I would lean that he goes that way. Last night is a good example why. But of course, luckily I'm not the coach. Hopefully Thomas just has a slight ankle sprain.

If Thomas doesn't play tonight and coach decides to stick with 7 defensemen it will be interesting to see if he goes with Max Rud or Axel Begley and how much playing time he gets.
Last season Rud played 20 games and Begley played 14 games so maybe Rud is more likely.
Rud turned 21 in the middle of September. Begley turns 21 in the middle of December.
Both Gopher Athletics and College Hockey News have Rud listed as 6'3" 185 lbs and Bagley as 6'2" 190 lbs.
Thomas is listed as 6'1" 205/210 lbs so the Gopher lose some weight (likely strength) along with experience in the D group.
I am surprised that one of Rud/Begley didn't leave in the off season to get some playing time knowing they were the 8th/9th defensemen.
It might be good for the team for coach to reward that loyalty tonight with some playing time.
Max Rud's dad Eric Rud (a 1997 graduate of CC was a two-time team captain and two-time WCHA Defensive Player of the Year playing for coach Don Lucia) is a current assistant head coach at St. Cloud and also was an assistant head coach at St Cloud under Bob Motzko. Eric conducted a recent interview that was played during St. Cloud's game last night where the person interviewing him teased him that his son is playing for the Gophers (a rival). Eric responded that his son is enjoying his time with the Gophers.

Begley in for Thomas. Mittelstadt in for Falloon. Souliere in net. Pretty much expected.
Hendrickson back with Moore & Ziemer.
I am curious how long Max Rud will like not playing with the Gophers (9th defensemen). 😉
Although if Thomas is out next week it is certainly possible both Begley and Rud play a game at Wisconsin as the 7th defensemen.
Not sure what people are seeing about Airey, but imho he has looked every bit the part you want from a let staring G.
Got Snuggy going last night, now it’s Ollie’s turn. Let’s go!
