Whatever happens happens. I need to stop caring. Between football, hockey, NHL, and NFL (Bears), I need to learn to enjoy the game and not the outcome.
At this point, the Gophers are sixth in the conference so everything is an upset ?
On paper I’m sure MSU will be favored but if you follow college hockey there is absolutely no reason the Gophers can’t sweep this series. MSU will be riding high after this weekend. They need a reality check and Mariucci is just the place to make it happen?
yes MSU is in 1st place now it’s time for the Gophers to step up and sweep them
Aloha!
I’m caught between history and current events. We have had a long string of success against Michigan State. On the other hand they look solid and Augustine is for real. Could easily steal a game or even two for Sparty if we’re not careful. On the other hand, we have the Closer and he’s no slouch in goal either. I think we can do well this upcoming weekend but we need to play a full 120 minutes. The biggest thing holding us back this weekend is ourselves. Also, really hope Kurth can snag a goal this weekend. Once he gets going that opens up another threat for us and another threat that other teams have to watch out for.
Should be a great weekend of hockey. Huge opportunity
I hope this series they finally wear their new gold jerseys.
Should be a high flying offensive series both ways which will be a breath of fresh air after the Notre Dame series
Should be a high flying offensive series both ways which will be a breath of fresh air after the Notre Dame series
Would that favor us or are the Spartans good enough where it’ll be pretty even?

id expect it to be similar To when we play Michigan. Both teams getting up and down and having chances. I’d be thinking 6+ goals each night, unless Augustine or Close have a game they’re out of their mind
Minnesota has won 14 straight games against Michigan State.

MN sweep and we are right in it. A split would be OK. The reality is the BIG will be a war of attrition.

agreed. Feels like there will be 5-6 teams who stay close until the end with OSU looking like the only lower team while still not being awful. We’ve been spoiled recently with bulldozing everyone but this year more than any any of the top 6 can beat each other
Still liking the chances of a Gopher sweep. Michigan State will be riding high and thinking they’re all that.

As do I. A sweep would be huge. Especially with two tough tests on the road to finish the first half of the year.
This weekend also brings up the annual question, if you can only have two out of three wins this weekend (hockey x2, football) are you taking a hockey split and a win over Wisconsin OR a sweep and the football team has to go and get the Axe back next year? It’s immaterial and obviously has zero bearing on the outcome but it’s always interesting and amusing to see everyone’s take.

The football team is trash, give me 2 wins for the guys on skates!

I'll take a split and Gopher Football keeping the Axe.
Keep your stick on the ice...

While I 100% appreciate the desire to keep the Axe, with how things are shaping up with the Big Ten hockey standings already this early and the need for this hockey team to really find some consistency asap I’m personally choosing a sweep for the fellas with flow this weekend. As much as it would pain me to watch the Badgers win the Axe on our home field.

Ohhhhhhh I agree... though wisconSIN is are #1 rival in all sports. Even hockey. Plus winning the Axe at home, getting a bowl bid helps the football program in the long term more than the hockey program.

Two years ago the Gophers were a goal away from winning the axe and sweeping the Whioux in Grand Forks

An almost perfect weekend. Would have made up for the horror show that was Thanksgiving weekend 2019.
So far this year it seems like a tale of two teams. Like Bob and the captains said, they have played one good game per week and either not well or so so the other. That will not do it in any league. The Gophers are capable of much more and I firmly believe that. I liked what Bob and players said about gaining maturity, embracing the grind that is the top level college hockey they signed up for, and playing a 200 foot game. Every game. So hard to do which is why it is worthwhile. Loved most of what I saw Saturday and a lot of what I saw Friday. There are players (like the 5th years) that have been what they need to be. The absolute backbone. Others are starting to step up to the full 60 idea both nights. A few more need to do the same. They will get there. PP weak but on the upswing, PK not bad and way too often tested unnecessarily, solid goalie +.
Hockey sweep is the pick.
The football team has lost me for the remainder of the year and every win is going to be important come March for the hockey team
I’m attending all three games this weekend. I will choose a hockey sweep hands down every time.
Sadly the last fb game I attended was a bad loss to becky, so at least I know what to expect. ?
Hockey sweep 1000 times out of 1000. If a win by the FB team meant winning the west, I may drop it a bit to maybe 999-1. ?

@rau4skiumah how would you rather see two regular season wins vs keeping the axe and watching wisconSIN lose.

It’s not an easy choice but like I said, with how tough the Big Ten is this year every regular season win is vital. But again, this is just my personal preference.

Big day today! Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Now it’s time to get this train rolling. Let’s go Gophers!!
Split or Sweep, either way win Friday!
We're overdue for a Gophers Culvers sweep.
It will be a tough weekend, but if the Gophers play their game they can sweep.
I can't remember, are Thanksgiving weekend games usually well-attended or empty?

depends on the opponent. Typically not well attended unless it’s the whosies, usually lean on students around the holidays too. Although with a lot more interest around the program in the last year I would expect a better crowd tonight. At least that’s wishful thinking.
Looks like there are only a few tickets left tonight so hopefully the return on those is solid. My guess is the crowd tonight is decent but a good chunk of the students are still home and then on Sunday afternoon it’s the opposite. Hopefully the boys can generate their own excitement and motivation because I fear it won’t be coming from the crowd. But we’ll see. Hopefully I’m wrong and the fans turn out for some thanksgiving weekend fun.
Love the lines, but do not understand the infatuation with Pino.
The three things that are the most note worthy to me.
Airey is still out. Is there any word on his injury?
Snuggy playing left wing.
Begley as the 7th defensemen rather than Rudd.

I don't think we have learned the nature of it, but it was reported he had a setback.
Chat will be going tonight, as usual.

KURTH with his 1st!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Huglen gets the steal and feeds Kurth
The TV announcers said Michigan State brought in 4 players via the transfer portal. Which makes me wonder if Michigan State hit some NIL pay dirt? Why would a player leave UMD for Michigan State? The way things have become these days it makes you wonder if $$$ is flying around behind the scene? You have no idea what's really going on these days.
How much playing time, tv exposure, etc also factor in.

Play like that every. Single. Period. Every single one the rest of the year. Great tenacity. Great forecheck. Solid and calm in our own zone. Keep it going!
In the first period the Gophers lead in shots 13-6, scoring chances 6-2, odd man rushes 4-0, face offs 11-2.
The crowd showed up and so did the team. Need to get a 2 goal lead.
