So, the plan is to beat Michigan State with Michigan State's backups. Seems kind of unlikely.
This is hilarious when you remember that a few years ago we beat Wisconsin 13-0 over the course of a weekend with our 3rd string goalie facing our former backup in the BADgers net

Think you may be getting a little ahead of yourself with Kernan. Pritchard I’ve heard more buzz about becoming a Gopher. Kernan not so much
What are the other likely hypotheses? I am not very excited about Kvasnicka coming in as he needs another year to get stronger.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Moe ended up coming in this year if he did in fact accelerate. Plays center and is older and bigger than Kvasnicka. Probably ideal if they both went back to junior but he did spend the whole year getting top line and pp1 time.

Maybe he comes back strong in year two - it is tough to thrive as a 16-year-old in the USHL - but his stock has cooled considerably. No interest in him at the moment from me, especially given the extracurricular factors. Not an option until 2026 at the earliest anyway.

No. Just no.

Can we stop panicking over “high end talent” please.
How could the Gophers not recruit Bump or WesternMich Goalie both from the State of Hockey? I know building a team is difficult but high end talent should be a easy selection to build a team with.
Aloha!

Both of those guys reopened their recruitment late after coaching changes. At least in Slukynsky's case—a childhood North Dakota fan who was recruited by the Gophers the first time around—Minnesota didn't have room for a goalie, and he probably wanted to play with his brother. With Bump, he opened his recruitment in July of 2023 after the Vermont coach was fired in scandal. Tough situations to recruit in both cases.

Bump stings, but we don't really have a strong Warroad pipeline to get the Slukynsky's. I am also guessing Bob did recruit Bump, but was insistent on 2 years in juniors and he wanted to hop right in. But that is just this uninformed fans guesses haha
It's interesting (if only to me) that potulny (maybe the heir apparent to Bob, at least I would expect his name to be up) was able to get Slukynsky to Northern Michigan (originally) --- not a current hockey hotbed, but as others noted it may have been about being able to play sooner.
Same with Bump, originally chose Vermont --- also not a current big time program.
Goes to show the blue bloods don't get all the gems.
When should we expect a final roster based on typical timelines?

We didn’t get this year’s full roster (+B1G schedule) until like, 1.5 weeks before our first game of the regular season. Hopefully this year was an outlier.
Mews (CHL kid) signs with Michigan. 3rd rounder. will be interesting to see who the big players are as those dominoes start to fall a bit more

No clue where he lived originally but if he moved to Fargo on purpose he truly is nuts.

The day that Bob and the Gophers finally win a national championship will be glorious for two reasons. First and foremost the maroon and gold will finally be back atop the summit. Second, the man can finally shake these “Big Game Bob” comments. The reactions from fans to him being named the Team USA head coach for the WJC next are just brutal.

I mean Team USA did win the World Juniors the first time he coached. And he made some decisions some other coaches wouldn't, such as making Tyler Parsons the starting goalie and sticking with him the entire way.
Does Bob earning the US National Junior Head Coach gig bring steam to Gopher recruiting? You'd think so... How long has he known he'd be the guy? Did this influence his recruiting strategy? Maybe yes with the quiet cycle.
Weren't we told he was going to retire two years ago?
Weren't we told he should be replaced as the Gopher's coach?

32 Thoughts said that Motzko would be the guy right after David Carle said he wasn't going for a three-peat. I think there is something to be said at the WJC level for having experience coaching 18- and 19-year-olds. (Although, it should be mentioned, Hastings did a great job with a less-talented team in 2019.) People seem to like playing for Motzko, even at his age.
Getting a gold medal will be an uphill climb though. While I don't think anyone will be missing in the NHL, the American player pool looks like it won't get much help from the younger players and does not have an obvious starting goalie. It's a tough job next year, and I understand why USA Hockey feels they want to have someone who's won at this level before, rather than going for a coach who has been waiting his turn (Carvel, Ferschweiler, Nightingale, etc.).
Random thought to just kill the time in the off season because tossing out fun lineup ideas in April is pointless other than just being fun. But I wonder what a line of Hendrickson, Clark, and Lamb would look like. I feel like it could be a fun combination of some players that each offer something a little different.
We need a influx of talent quick. Or this is not a tournament team.

these comments crack me up like the team doesn't have enough raw talent. Apparently NHL scouts would vastly disagree with you in terms of "talent" on this team and the capability to make a postseason. Ignoring autobids except those already in the field in terms of draft picks (FF teams in bold)

The Gophs will have between 8-12 draft picks on next years team, more than half the field this year. There's something to be said about playing a style and playing together that matter much more than "talent". Most coaches would kill to have this level of "talent" coming back next year and coming in this year.
It is really tough to predict how a team will preform during the season in late April. The roster is probably not set yet as well. Let's see how the team gels and make a judgement on Jan 1st. Look at this year's Vikings. No one predicted the way their regular season played out.

Really hate to be repetitive, but can we just Herb Brooks the thing? Get the right players in the right spots with the right mentality. Not just chase the flash. Yes, we need some of that, but in my pretty long tenure as a Gopher fan I cannot remember many times we lacked that. The combinations you create as a coach with players that have balanced strengths are what wins consistently. Of course high draft players will help immensely but you need those backbone guys to gel it.
The problem as I see it is although the team next year will have talent, it will not have any of the high end talent that has been present the last 3-4 years. Couple that with the fact that this roster probably doesn't do well playing a grinding heavy style. Their identity will be to play a skill game, the question is whether or not they will have enough skill to succeed with that style. I'm not convinced.
Hopefully we add more talent between now and then. Vegoe seemed to think they are saving spots to see what happens with movement.

A little hesitant to even bring it up since it falls under the “reckless speculation” umbrella, but there’s reason to believe Bob retires after his contract runs out (after 2027-28) and that’s why recruits are starting to look elsewhere.
Am I the only poster here who remembers an interview a couple years back where Bob basically says he doesn’t wanna be coaching forever and into old age like York and Berenson. I believe he even said something to the effect of we’ll see how we feel after 10 years or so(massive paraphrasing). Did I just completely imagine that?
Bob will be 67 when his contract runs out in 2028, will he seriously want to sign an extension and coach into his 70’s with the current landscape of college athletics being what it is? I say no and I believe agents/recruits have caught wind and have started to look elsewhere.
I get one tinfoil hat take a year and this is it!
BUT, that does NOT affect next season. Lynden Lakovic and a high end RHD should be priorities this offseason!!
Looks like Luke Misa (Michaels brother) is committing to Penn State.

would've expected Misas agents to put him out east he was going to play college, so not surprising. I don’t expect Michael to set foot on campus this year unless the draft goes really weirdly
So why do the Gophers no longer have the Mariucci classic?

So why do the Gophers no longer have the Mariucci classic?
I think it basically came down to it becoming more difficult to get teams to Minnesota in late December when a lot of teams are going to warmer climates for newer tournaments.

Ok but now the Badddgers have there Holiday tournament back after a few years of missing?

Also, for this year, the arena isn't available anyway. (Doesn't answer the longer-term question, of course)
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
I could be remembering incorrectly, but didn't the Northstar Classic also play a part in the demise of the Mariucci Classic?

No, the Mariucci Classic predated the NSCC by 23 years. The first MC was held in 1991 (Minnesota, Bowling Green, Providence, and BC). There was a two-year hiatus (2017 & 2018), before the final MC in 2019 (Minnesota, St. Cloud, Mankato, and Bemidji).

I liked the idea of NSCC. It had good intentions. Just, all the teams besides Minnesota really weren't fully onboard. If the NSCC was tourney like the Beanpot or Great Lakes and Minnesota started it in the 90's. Invited UMD, SCSU and Mankato (when they joined D1), it had the opportunities of being a huge success. And as Bemidji and St. Thomas joined D1 rotated the invites around if needed.
Keep your stick on the ice...
I think if they brought it back and rotated around home sites it could work. Make it a set weekend each year (thanksgiving? new years?). Part of the problem is they couldn’t sell out the X but they’d do just fine at Sanford Center, Amsoil, Mariucci, etc.
I think if it became a yearly thing you’d see more fans from all the fanbases travel. I just don’t believe Michigan and Connecticut can pull off an in-state tourney and we can’t.

Do you mean Massachusetts, not Connecticut? Unless, I'm missing a tourney in Connecticut.

Personally, it's StP or bust. This needs to be an off campus site tourney. Or a tourney hosted by the Gophers at Mariucci or StP. Though, I agree... needs to be the same weekend.

feel like the issue with the X was you’re never going to sell it out when it started and then people think the tournament is lame and don’t travel for it in the future. Can see the selling point for Duluth, but you’re not going to do well there outside of just Duluth fans filling the rink.
the difference of the bean pot is they’re all in Boston. This type of tournament doesn’t have a central location and there’s too many mn teams to make it work to give you a “best in mn” feel to make the tournament “matter” how the bean pot does.
if you are going to launch it, you just do it how they do it and you scatter the games with the title game on a specific date and it’s the same every year. The full weekend tourney diminishes butts in seats tickets and ramps up your full weekend cost of stay versus people will drive down for a title/third place on the same day thing.
