Didn't UND recently have one of the old stars back and they had videos and him skating out in a jersey and stuff? I think they've also had big heads of former stars too, fun for kids in the arena to teach them about the program's history.
Compare that to what we got yesterday and it's just amateur hour.
UND does something they call "The Last Shift" or something similar where they have an old timer suit up in full gear minus a helmet and take a lap around the rink
The Carolina Hurricanes have recalled Jack LaFontaine
Is it good for a goalies save percentage and goals against average to start with the same number? What a clown show.
Oh wow you aren't even kidding. Save % is .780 and GAA is 7.20. Hope he's having fun.
I mean yes you would want a 0.9xx save percentage and a GAA of 0.9xx
Oh wow you aren't even kidding. Save % is .780 and GAA is 7.20. Hope he's having fun.
I can't imagine making an ass out of yourself is any fun. I hope he's counting his money.

No, it is not good.

We get it. You hate Jack Lafontaine.

And?
I don’t hate the guy or begrudge him but if I knew he’d bolt mid-season and play like he did this year I’d rather have Moe/Close tandem to start the season and not let him return for a fifth year. Not pretending Motzko could’ve predicted it either.
Not disagreeing he took a step back from what we had last year - no one could have predicted that. (Well, maybe the NHL GMs here could have )
Yeah his first two NHL games were unfortunate. But I hope he does figure it out and has a successful career post college - wherever it may be. I wish all our former players well at the next level and just don’t get why some revel in their misfortune.
Literally anyone could’ve predicted that he’d take a step back from an outlier year but you don’t need to be the son of a former player or league exec to have done that
But I don’t really hate the guy or wish he’d fail, I just kinda doubt he’s gonna stay in the NHL long term.
Jack is 24 years old, I think he made the right call.

IMO he will be playing in Europe in a few years
A really great story about Morneau's Weds night hockey league.
Parrish, 45, who lives five minutes up the road, signed on early, too.
Included in a talented, rotating cast of former NHL players beyond Parrish is Walz, 51, Byfuglien, 36, Prosser, 35, Martin, 40, Leopold, 41, Ryan Malone, 42, Blake Sloan, 46, and Keith Ballard, 39, plus former pros Geno Parrish, 47, Mark’s big brother, who just may have the best hands of them all, and Mike Rucinski, 58

Canada team needs to recruit Staal who has stayed here to live too. Or make it a world team and see if Vanek will drive across town sometimes.
We're shocked.

Nick Leddy. He was the easy one for me. Michaelson was my challenge

I understand the Wild letting Rem go isn't the end of the world, but I was checking how he's been doing in MTL and noticed that he had 11 PTS in 12 games with the Wild while only averaging 9:43 of TOI and was a +1. I think I read it being speculated Evason wanted more grit and if so ok, but that's pretty good production for less than 10 minutes a game.

Rem had 11 points in 20 games with the Wild.
Typo. That's still pretty solid production for 10 minutes per game.

Rem is a good hockey player. He wasn’t going to be a top 6 forward thou on the Wild & clearly Dean & Billy didn’t think he fit defensively on the bottom 2 lines. Whether they were right or wrong, it’s a learning experience for Rem about perceptions & hopefully he will thrive playing north of the border.
His skills aren't exactly dime a dozen but there are plenty like him, and certain types of players don't work in this NHL in bottom 6 roles.
REM has NHL hockey skills, and I think he'll work his way into a lineup that helps him along. He's still a young player with a lot of upside. Barring injuries, he should have a decent NHL career.
So...yeah.
I can't help myself but wonder how great would it be to have like 10 of those setups around the metro? How much did it really cost?
For those who have the Athletic. It is a tough read.

It's horrible to read how Pavelich suffered mental illness like so many other professional athletes have after severe head trauma. So many stories mirror one another and the bad thing is that there isn't enough help out there for them. I wish we were better able to diagnose and treat CTE in the living so that we didn't have another tragedy like Pavelich or Junior Seau.

Since it’s somewhat preventable, we should be more proactive than reactive. Fighting and egregious checking/hitting has no place in the game anymore given what we know about head injuries. But, that is just my opinion so please take it easy on me.

B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

That seems like a reasonable approach but let's take a moment a remember a recent discussion in a different thread about hard nosed type of hockey is more desirable to fans. People like to watch hockey for big hits, same with football, people like to watch crashes in NASCAR. Those things lead to the head traumas behind all of this. Sports leagues are doing better but much more can be done for sure, but will the leagues do this when their bottom line could be affected?
Proactive will benefit the athlete of today but how are we helping the athlete from just 5-10 years ago? It was only 4 years ago when former Bulldog Andrew Carroll took his own life because of CTE. That is why I made the statement about helping the living. Big strides need to be made to prevent but bigger strides need to be made to help those already affected by head trauma and the different levels of mental illness that follow.

Vanek with a rare appearance on a podcast. Vanek with a great interview.
Thomas talked about playing for each of the teams he played for.
Loved playing for Torts.
Should have re-signed with Islanders when he had the chance.
Talked about the "advisors" that kept contacting him when he was 14.
Learned about college hockey from watching it on TV while in Whioux Falls.
His 5 schools he chose from-- MN, WI, Michigan, BC, BU
BC and BU wanted to switch his on campus visits to later in the year and he said no thanks as he wanted to get it done before the USHL season.
One of his goals is to graduate from the U. ( I suggest he do it in 4 years when his kid comes )
Talked about the offer sheet. He had 4 offer sheets as an RFA. One team offered a 12 year deal.

Watching Laffer and his Chicago Wolves play Iowa Wild on NHL Network right now.
Easily the ugliest jerseys in a single game I have ever seen…

I’d be curious to know what exactly is the biggest cause of concussions for hockey players, whether it’s the big hits or just the smaller hits adding up over time. I tend to agree that big hits aren’t really necessary for the product to be successful.
With the enforcer types obviously fighting is a big part of it but that’s been going by the wayside at least at the NHL level (and isn’t common in college obviously). I imagine that’s probably more of an issue at lower levels of play.
With football it’s more obvious to me what the issue is, linemen butt beads every single play and the big hits obviously are a big problem. You also have RBs leading with their head all too often and there’s probably a bunch of other examples I’m forgetting.
Rem is getting a pretty good opportunity up in Montreal. Played almost 17 minutes last night, playing on the PP and PK had a hand in all three goals, 1 goal 2 assists.
He and Caufield may be on St Louis' good side as small college guys.

Always been weird to me that people still call Rem small at 5’11” and 200lbs. Probably slightly below average height for an NHLer, sure, but definitely not in the bottom quarter of the league. Do people call Fiala small?

True, but what stands out with Fiala isn’t his size, it’s his explosive skating ability ☝️

Really hope he can stick. Think he can in the right spot. 29 points this season. Not bad for a rookie.

For those who have the NHL Network, Laffer gets the start today for the Wolves. He only played 2 games in March for a very good Wolves team. He is 2-1-4 with a 2.69 GAA and .880 SV % this year.
Wally Shaver's kid doing the announcing.
Laffer is having a rough go at it today. Down 3-0 after 1. Chicago took a 5 and has given up 2 PPG so far during the 5 including a 5x3. I think Texas has 19 shots on goal in the 1st.
