Extended highlights from last night’s game
Don't want to get too far ahead of myself but that 3rd period reminded me of the 03 game where they just scored at will on that poor mercyhurst team
2003, but you’re spot on. MN went on to dismantle a very good Ferris Bueller team in the next game.

Do people remember who Ferris beat in the first round at Mariucci? ?
Sure dioux!
Kudos to the team for sticking to it & finding a breakthrough. Canisius have only themselves to blame for their downfall in the 3rd. Faceoffs were almost 2:1 to the good - Nelson was strong on the dot. Now hopefully we can see a more complete 60min effort Saturday & show Jan the door.
Go Gophs!

Regarding shortening the bench, here’s what Bob said in the postgame interview, “We’ve got to try to get a little more out of all four lines on Saturday night.”

Schloss is probably the reason I could not get a seat in the press box on Saturday...

Large, the Canisius coach, several times how difficult the AHA is. Example:
“Large said, Getting through Atlantic Hockey is difficult. It wasn’t planned to have to go to three-game series on back-to-back weekends. College hockey is tough. Atlantic Hockey is very, very difficult.”
AHA was 0-11-1 vas B1G teams and a .359 winning percentage for all non-conference teams.
I would post the Canisius post game video, but there is nothing being made available to the media. Not sure why because MN, MSUM and SCSU has post game video available from last night.

Snuggy has 21 goals, Knies 21, Cooley 19, Brodzinski 18 when was the last time we had four 20 goal scorers?
1989-90 from my research
Peter Hankinson 25
Scott Bloom 24
Ken Gernander 32
Grant Bischoff 21
Trent Klatt 22Ben Hankinson just missed with 19
Those were the years when you never took your eyes off the game when the Gophers went on the PP. This season is the first since possibly back then when I've felt something similar.

Ooh - what did he say?
btw I expect that SCSU is going to play a similar game against Minnesota on Saturday, and that patience is going to be a virtue again.
Brad introduced himself and Bob couldn't find him in the back of the room. Once Bob spotted him he said "They let you in here, huh?"

Ok - I heard that line but didn't realize Brad was the reporter in question.
I'm not saying I deserve all the credit for the Gophers third period explosion but I did put the Gophers football jersey I was wearing back in the closet at the end of the 2nd. I wore it during the Michigan game also so it's permanently banned from my gameday wardrobe.
Motzko rotated Brody Lamb in the game with the 2nd line. He played very well. John Mittelstadt did not play until late in the 3rd period.
And the 4th line did not play as a unit the rest of the game.
In tournament hockey you do not play your 4th line. The games are not back to back, the television timeouts are extremely long, and your top line(s) can get lots of rest. You spot in a player like Lamb, and even John Mittelstadt, after a power play or penalty kill which the regulars might be out for extended times and/or the line rotation is jumbled, although I like how Motzko used Lamb last night rotating him with a higher line.
I think Brody Lamb is going to be a heck of a hockey player. I used Brent Gates as his (statistical) comp. Gates had 3 - 4 - 7 in 35 games his freshman year. Lamb is 4 - 4 - 8 in 36 games in his freshman year. Gates jumped up to 12-14 goals/season the next three seasons and 20+ points, including a 13-18-31 season his senior year. They both played USHL for Green Bay and had similar stats in their last USHL season, and were similar NHL draft choices, Gates a 3rd rounder and Lamb a 4th rounder. I think Lamb has a bit more playmaking potential than Brent Gates so he could well put up even more points once he gets regular power play time.
The reporter from Buffalo (woman) was really good. I liked her questions, appreciate the first was leaning toward recognition of Canisius (her job) and the others were thoughtful.
tBob really needs to let it go with Jess. I get it, he throws up some duds. His first question to Bob was a good one last night (and so was Bob's answer).
Schlossmon's question was good, too...

I think we all can admit that the team that Schloss covers is horsebleep but he is A+ as a college hockey reporter. I wish we had someone like him at either fishwrap factory in the Twin Cities covering college hockey. He is pretty lucky that he gets to cover college hockey as extensively as he does while most other papers are dropping exclusive coverage i.e. Milewski in Wisconsin or Frederick here in Mankato.

Nelson got a little frustrated in the second period. There was a play where he missed the shot and his follow through he plowed over a defender. If his frustration results in him forechecking harder, it’s a win for everybody except the opponent.

I expect Lamb to be much better than Gates. He's a better skater for sure, and he has a wicked good shot, which was evident last night.
I would call Gates a gifted mucker, if that makes sense. Lamb can fly and is much better on the rush.

There is so much to like about the farm kid, but one thing that frustrates me from time to time is that he seems to watch and not so much engage. He has this odd way of coasting into a corner or seemingly admiring an opponent lugging the puck.
Somehow, it all works out for him, but I think if he brought his body more often into a negotiation for the puck, the results would be acceptable. ?
MTU and MN almost got into a fistfight a few years back, because MN sent out their top PP unit with a big lead. It was hilarious.
It wasn't hilarious it was pathetic. MTU and their coaches were a bunch of bush leaguers.

That was a fun weekend of hockey to witness.
The hit (penalty) that lit the gophers butts on fire proved everything we all knew, it really woke them up and they played with a lot more energy and to their ability. The sleeping giant got pissed. That mentality is unbeatable. Go for it boys! That’s so fun to watch!

Yes it was
Kurth's goal took some of the pressure off going into the break. In my view, however, it was the fourth goal that really changed everything. At that point Canisius had to abandon their 4-back defensive style and start playing offense. The result is a good example of why they went with the defensive strategy in the first place. ?
5-minute majors can make or break a game either way (cash in or energize the team that killed it), but Lamb's goal came within a minute on the power play, so even a 2-minute minor would have given the Gophers the lift they needed.

Lamb has tons of talent and a lot of the intangibles you want in a hockey player. I anticipate an outstanding career at the U

We are tough to play when we have a lead. No one can skate with us except MI. I’m sure Jan will play the same defensive shell they did when we played them earlier in the year and try to get a lead and milk it.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
Obviously the second half of the game was an awful lot more fun, and as someone else noted, Kurth's goal took a ton of pressure off.
Having said that, I wonder what the game trajectory would have been without the 5 minute major right away in the third. It was a one goal game, and though the Gophers were starting to assert themselves, it is not unreasonable to think it might have been a very different, more challenging period.
I do like that our squad had to fight through any rust, an older team, lack of puck luck, etc at the beginning of a high pressure situation.
And finally, when Bob was interviewed during the game and said he was happy with what the team was doing on the ice, I didn't like it. I wanted to see more urgency and especially more puck possession. But, in hindsight, I now see it as the patience others have mentioned and this kept the team from getting frustrated. Not for the first time on this board, one of us accepts it is a good thing Bob and not any one of us is the coach.
I know there is a ref or two on this board so maybe they can answer this. On the Brodzinski no goal, if Lamb had tapped it in would it have counted or would they say the play was already over because the ref was pointing at the goal?
Really just depends when they blew the whistle and when Lamb theoretically would’ve tapped it in.
Whistle is king. Play is dead at the whistle, so wherever the puck is at that moment b
I think he would have had time because the whistle seemed to be after.
