Canisius will no doubt be physical. It’s their only shot really.

They are the original ASU, let's put it that way.

That and probably stack 4 guys across the blue line.
The Gophers will be sure to not take them lightly. The Gophers will win. Obviously they don't want to risk 3 of 4 MN teams in the Frozen 4 this year. Go Gophers!
The U just sent out a ticket request to season ticket holders via email.
Luckily there is no college lacrosse on ESPN2 before our game on Thursday. ?

Personally am expecting this would be a Culver's game if it was at home. They're #8 in the country in most penalty minutes averaging over 13/game. If the guys show up ready to go, we should stomp them. Just don't want to leave this thing tight as the game gets later where fluky things can happen.
Canisius has 15 Canadians, so I'm expecting a chippy game with Canisius trying to screen Close and score garbage goals. With that said, if the Gophers play a solid game they should win 5-1/5-2 type game.

I don’t want us going in expecting to win anything. We know how that has turned out before. We need to expect the A game from EVERY team we may play. We are the team to beat no doubt, but we will still have to earn every goal, every win.
It’s a new season and only one team will win four games. Let’s put in a 60 minute effort every night and I like our chances.
GO GOPHERS!
4 games. That's two series sweeps. We've done that before. 😉 Let's do this.

Feels like both games next weekend are gonna be a lot of clutch and grab
One thing I hate about Minnesota playing these lower ranked teams is that they continue to play the full 4 line rotation.
I was at the Yale-Minnesota game in Grand Rapids and that is what killed the Gophers. Yale barely played 3 lines and with the interminably long television timeouts that is very easy to do. We would come back from tv timeout, Yale would have their first line out there and we would have our 4th. That is one of the few things hockey coaches can do to change the odds of the game, creating the right matchups, and Lucia let Yale win that battle.
The more time the Cooley line is out on the ice, the higher the odds we win the game.

I'm fine with rolling 4 lines (to some extent) vs Canisius to make sure everyone is fresh for the next game, but agree there's not much reason to do it vs Kato or SCSU. But if it's tight midway through the 2nd or so, then yeah you should assert yourself. There's a rest day between the games and these are young guys. No reason not to short shift at least a bit.
Gophers are 7-1 in games after a loss. Most recently 7-2 and 8-0 wins.

This is a gripe of mine also. With the TV timeouts the 4th line should rarely see the ice. It might be a harsh take, but I stand by it. Play your best players.
Gophers huge favorites Thursday night.

@upnorthkid Obviously I totally disagree. The only chance a team like Canisius has against the Gophers is to be able to put their best players against our worst players. That is it. Yale did it and then they basically did it the entire tournament.
Play the 1-2-1-2-3-1-2-1-2-3 rotation, plugging in the 4th line only after there has been a power play. That means the Gopher's best players will always be against their best players, and that should be more than enough for victory.
And remember, teh Gophers have the last change all the way until we win the National Championship. There is zero reason to have our 4th line players against the opponents best lines.

I don't think the 4th line saw the ice for the last 10 minutes of the game last night and may have been longer. Lamb even played a shift on the third line in place of Kurth. Seems like Bob is aware and will shorten the bench if need be.
If there weren't so many media timeouts that are so long, the Gophers would be well-served to roll all 4 lines. But, with as many extra free timeouts as they get in the NCAAs compared to B1G play, definitely lean heavier on the top lines.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

oh i'm not saying don't match lines and use the last change advantage, but if they're getting some shifts vs line 2/3 for Canisius, I think that plays to our advantage to get our top guns out there against their weaker guys from time to time. I agree against SCSU/Kato, you roll 3 lines and plug some guys from the 4th line if you need them after a PP to get the lines back on right. I can see your point as well, but this 4th line has played smart hockey the vast majority of the year.
IRRC that fourth line against Yale was pretty bad lol, like some of those guys were truly a liability. This fourth line isn’t that but I agree with what everyone is saying.
I think more importantly the Nelson line needs to exert their will because we’ve seen that line dominate with sheer strength and will power. Was kinda surprised at what I saw last night from them.
Three Minnesotans on the Canisius roster
- D Keegan Langefels (Eden Prairie)
- F Grant Loven (East Grand Forks)
- D Lincoln Erne (Blaine)
I am looking for a way to stream the games as we don’t have cable. Is anyone aware of a way to pay for the individual games or is that not an option with ESPN?

I don’t know about that but a free trial for YouTube tv will get you all the games and it’s really easy to set up.

This is what I did... Highly recommend!
One thing I like about it is the unlimited DVR. I have all NCAA Hockey games automatically record so I never need to think about it.

I've done that before with YouTube TV as well.
I'd like to see a full game (or close to a full game) of focus and intensity against Canisius. Deal with task at hand without looking to the 2nd game.
Many of the games I have seen this year (which, admittedly isn't as many as I'd like) the Gophers have taken at least a period off, and then relied on an explosive period (or even an explosive 10 mins) to put the game out of reach.
Score early and often. Don’t let them even have the chance to gain confidence.

Yep… Don’t follow Purdue’s game plan vs. FDU. Best big man/center in the country and lose to the smallest D1 team. Cause they played to conservative and into their opponents hand and gave them confidence minute by minute.
Keep your stick on the ice...
16 seed hasn’t been shut out in quite some time. Close will do it on Thursday.
I know I worry too much but neither Faber or LaCombe looked like themselves Saturday and they only have 4 days off to be ready.
We don't want to give sue fans another wardrobe option, so we better win.
I've only been to this arena once (many years back) for a Force game. Parking wasn't great. Any concerns if we don't show up until puck drop of game 1? Don't love that there are 3 MN teams but am looking forward to the MSUM vs. JBSU match up. Should be a fun game. Zero care about who wins but wouldn't mind the Gopher game starting about 11pm because of 4 OTs.

I wouldn’t lose sleep over it if I were you.
I almost think the short rest could be ideal, we’ve talked about this team being bad after long breaks so hopefully the opposite is true here. I think those two specifically will look better though especially LaCombe. Hopefully the same is true with the third line, they might not have the size advantage they’re used to against an older team but they can play a lot better than they did Saturday.I know I worry too much but neither Faber or LaCombe looked like themselves Saturday and they only have 4 days off to be ready.
6 of the Gophers 9 losses were on the big sheet believe it or not. The Gophers are 9-3-1 (10 wins counting Bemidji) on an NHL sheet.
From Bob's radio show--
We showed some rust. Almost the same as last year.
Didn't have a lot of hamburger in our game. Didn't have our ground game going.
Wasn't pleased with the drop passes.
Wasn't Jackson's A game. That was expected after a month off.
Is glad they are playing Thursday. Wished they played on Weds. Just need to play games.
Canisius is an older, veteran team. They have a good PP.
Had no problem with SCSU in our region. There is so little difference in the seeds.
All the fans except the Gopher fans in the building will be against us. Like last year out east.
Need to duplicate what we did last year.
Talked about the rink renovation.

And, it's a late game again . . .
Not knowing what to do, they do what they know . . .
Knowing what to do, they sometime don't do it . . .
The 26th year of the Gopher Men's Hockey Profile got to be too much for this ol' codger to handle . . . what with all of the possible activity on the transfer portal . . . . So, I'm closing it down at the 25th year . . .
I'm getting tired of the rust angle. I wonder if constantly talking about it impacts the psyche of the players, to the point where they start subconsciously buying into the theory that time off is harmful. But with that said, get it into the heads of every man on that roster to play with fire from the first drop of the puck every game from here on out. You're the best team in the freaking country - go out, play like a boss and own your opponent.

Agreed. It makes sense when you’re coming out of a bye week but here? Nope.
I didn’t listen to the interview but I wonder if he was referring to individuals over the team as a whole. For LaCombe it definitely was real and noticeable. The rest of the team played a week before so yeah that doesn’t make as much sense.
Going into the game with Michigan they had played 1 game in the last 20 days. Rust was definitely a factor for the team.
Coach is tired of the Big Ten playoff format. Yes he is a whiner but his point is accurate.
The players don't care what their coach says to the media they care what he says to the them personally and I am willing to bet he isn't using it as an excuse when talking to the players.
When talking to the media coach is honest to a fault in explaining what is happening. As a fan I appreciate his honesty.

I want to say the Gophers have played better on small sheets for the last several years. Sounds counterintuitive but I have noticed better play on NHL sheets.6 of the Gophers 9 losses were on the big sheet believe it or not. The Gophers are 9-3-1 (10 wins counting Bemidji) on an NHL sheet.

I agree. We will have twelve days off between the regional and the frozen four if we win the regional. Do we have to change that format too? Should we have intentionally started losing in January to avoid the bye week? Just deal with a bye.
