That was a very much needed goal. We had been in our end too much.
Pitlick with a post. My god we’ve hit so many this year
I'm glad he's having a good game. That last goal is an example of how this team needs to play. Defense first and score on turnovers.Ollie had 3 goals all season coming into this weekend he now has 3 goals this series.
I WANT A OLLIE HAT TRICK!!!!!!
Where’s Pitlick? Why Pino on the top?
Apparently the only player Bob feels comfortable punishing is Pitlick. Comical
Do we know if it is punishment, equipment or an injury?
Of course not but why should that stop us?
Pitlick went out for the power play, then went back to being benched again for Pino. Not that hard to figure out.
If Pitlick did get punishing I am willing to bet it is because he is doing something(s) that coach has warned him about that he has control of like repeatedly taking long shifts and/or repeatedly making unnecessary blind passes.
I would love to know what happened but if Jess asks the question in the post game coach probably wouldn't answer him since coach clearly is not a fan of Jess.
To be fair they’re trailing and teams typically take more risk in that scenario.OUTSTANDING pass from Snuggy. Great finish from Ollie.
Augustine has been great for MSU. Agreed with the B10 broadcast who said they kind of leave him out there like the 80s Oilers. Lots of prime scoring chances MSU gives up. Can’t see any way they strung it together in the postseason unless he stands on his head somewhere and steals a game or two
Coming up on the point in the game when Minnesota usually gets a BS penalty call on them.

Yep they have have multiple odd many rushes this 3rd period just like they did in a certain game we all are trying to forget about but this time they capitalized on one of them.
Nevers 5-1, ENG.

@streakygopher OK I know I am biased here but when some players play 'defense first' they get absolutely blasted and when others do they are awesome. Defense is a team game just like offense. Centers are the defensive offense and tend to become defensive specialists in some cases. I am liking the overall game today. After watching the replay of last night (painful) the number of turnovers by #81 and #22 were enormous. #22 also missed (and turned over) some pretty passing from his team. Much better today. On the leadership issue doesn't that start from the top down? More fire is needed certainly. Where it comes from I don't much care
Two 3rd periods like this one and State gets swept this weekend.
Game over, Gophs win 5-1.

He’s most likely in warroad so you’re probably safe. 😬
top to bottom team win. Dominated them on their home ice in a real workman like fashion. Really hope that last night was a turning point and it leads to some laser focus the rest of the year. Two big road games with the skunks to the east next week
Nice win against a good team and a very good goalie.

I would never support a team that plays like Mankato, but any coach will tell you that a team that plays great defense, a team with offensive skill, will get plenty of opportunities.
@cowgirl Why would the Rink Live send a reporter to a top 10 matchup when they can send him to his hometown to report on high school hockey? I'm sure he will somehow drive to Madison, but will he actually show up to South Bend? He hasn't made a non driving road trip yet.... 🙄
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
Another period win even without the empty netter.
This weekend they won 4 periods, lost 1 period, and tied 1 period.
Outscored a team who was #7 at the start of the weekend 7-4 and the refs took away one goal from us and gave Sparty their only goal on a missed off sides.
To hold the 3rd highest scoring team (4.2 goals per game) to only one goal today which would have been another Closer shut out if not for the missed off sides is VERY impressive.
On the road they shut out a top scoring team in 4 of the 6 periods (and it should have been 5 of 6 periods).
I would love to know how many minutes Chesley played tonight. He seemed he was out there every other defensive shift.

They started to pucker briefly in the third but I’m glad the guys realized it’s okay to keep playing offense in the third period rather than just trying to protect the most dangerous lead in hockey.
Thats the effort we need, every period, every game, every weekend for the rest of this season. Do that and we have a chance at blowing the roof off the X in April.
We need something else other than a bad loss to keep them motivated. They won’t have that opportunity a couple months from now.
Nice hockey day Minnesota win for the guys!

I’ve seen very few post game interviews from the rink live all season. We need a dedicated Gopher Hockey representative who can cover all the games!
I can understand why Jess would want to be in Warroad, very cool opportunity to represent the home town. I don’t blame him.
Moore buried one of their chances in the 3rd period that was the different. The last game last season and games earlier this season against Sparty including last night that had plenty of chances to put games away in the 3rd period but they didn't finish their chances. Sparty plays a lot of high scoring games due to the offensive style of game they play. This is why their goalie's stats don't look good even though he is clearly good. There are certainly plenty of reasons why he was the main goalie for the USA gold medal winning team a month ago.
Coaches look at scoring chances more that shots and final scores when determining how the team played and which players are earning more or less playing time. Yes the final score is what matters but scoring chances usually will result in goals over time especially if you have shooters like we have. Late night they didn't capitalized on enough chances only scoring twice.
Moore has been getting plenty of scoring chances this season which is why he has stayed on the top line even though he only had 3 goals. He finally buried more chances this weekend.
The team defense is clearly getting better. Over the past 7 games they have given up 2, 2, 1, 2, 3, 3, and 1 an average of 2 goals per game.
5 of the 7 games have been against teams in the top half of Pairwise (#7, #18, #30)
2 of the 7 games have been against teams in the bottom half of Pairwise (#63)
The Gophers win the season series against Michigan State with 2 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. This is huge for Pairwise. Pairwise doesn't care that we lost the shoot out after the tie game.
Over the past 18 match ups the Gophers have 16 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie against Michigan State. Even a blinded Sparty can find a win every once in awhile.

Yeah but I need something to bitch about because reasons!!
Good way to end the weekend for the Gophers. That was a clear win. I prefer that going into the Wisconsin games next week.
I would be surprised to see anyone catch MSU with their remaining schedule.
Let's continue the roll and sweep those dirty Badgers.
Friday's collapse puts a wet blanket on the entire weekend but good response for much needed split. Lot of issues yet and tough to see this team stringing consistent performances together come tourney time but just get there and hope to get hot.
Tough look for Fish's mom. This coach has given Fish a great opportunity he likely does not get from many. Certainly not Carl's fault though.
What is comment about Fish’s mom about?

Liking some social media posts bashing coaching staff. Not unusual for parents but still disappointing.
Would it be wrong for me to make a social media post bashing her for not producing a better hockey player? 🤔 🤣 Just kidding I wouldn't actually do that but I could see somebody doing that.
I liked the game today, looked good. Moving their feet finding the open player. Defense was stiff and Close made some nice saves. I’d like to see them carry this energy to Wisconsin next week. If they get hot they can do some damage come playoff time.
Michigan State is 11-3-2 in the Big Ten
1-2-1 against the Gophers and 10-1-1 against everybody else.
A loss that should’ve been a win and a decisive win against the best big ten team on the road isn’t a bad weekend. They do need to figure out how to make the breakout more consistent and not troll on zone entries on the PP, I think they’re capable.
After last night's game, I was pretty grumpy (though admittedly kind of selfishly so). Work has been keeping me from reading and posting here, so I was PO'd that the first time I was back in weeks was for a game we let slip away. In a way I actually saw a game like this coming too since there were times during the win streak where it felt like we were coasting after getting a seemingly comfortable lead, so letting one slip against the top team in the conference right now that's also proven to be dangerous is multiple ways wasn't surprising.
Since there aren't too many games left in the season, our guys needed to use that to get their heads screwed back on straight and that's what we more or less saw today.
I know Moore's three goals is getting the bulk of the attention, but I was so happy for Nevers to get the ENG after the earlier one was waived off. He's been spending the season finding his game again, so hopefully two goals in the last three weekends is a sign that he's well on his way back and there's a lot more to come. It was an aesthetically satisfying goal too.
PP still needs work, but there's time to take care of that.

Sit a captain tomorrow? Switch the lines completely up? Pull closer? Play Michel?
I want to see something tomorrow to show that tonight was unacceptable.
also this could 100% be an emotional post haha
We were on a plane so I couldn’t watch the game yesterday. BUT looks like this was an emotional post and I’m glad we got the win yesterday maybe I’m the problem?
sucks we legitimately could have won all 4 games against sparty this year and been closer to controlling our own destiny for the big 10, but 2-1-1 against a much improved top 10/5 team is nothing to be too mad about. Big series next weekend now
I posted my rant after the loss on Friday and I’m going to be sure to post after a solid win last night. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to watch the whole game. But between listening to the first half with Frank and Wally and then watching the later half of the game I was very impressed with the response from the boys. The B1G announcers towards the end of the game about how Frank had told them that the bud ride to the game yesterday was the quietest bus ride he had ever been on. Everyone was zeroed in, and it showed. Just a very solid, workmen like approach to the game yesterday. If they play like that they can beat anybody. If this is a turning point then great. Worth a clunker in East Lansing. But make sure that’s what it is. Learn from it and move forward.
A couple of thoughts from last nights game--
Close played really well last night. Made a spectacular save with his stick early on, and seemed to be in control all night long.
The defense as a unit, played great. They focused more on plays in front of Close by always having a man in front of him to clear it out of harms way.
Bob tinkered with the PP units last night. He moved Moore up to PP #1 with Pitlick, Snuggy, Farm Kid and Rinzel. The #2 unit was Huglen, Brodzy, Kurth, Koster and Luke M. Also on their PPG, it was a hybrid unit because it came right after a 4x4. I don't mind them trying The Farm Kid on the PP unit again, on either one, because he does like to go and stand in front of the net. I can see Bob to continue to tinker with the center spot with Huglen, Nelson and Lamb getting rotated in. I actually don't mind when Brodzy centers on the PP unit #2.

I know Pino came in for Pitty and this forum believes it was to send a message. No clue.
Pino also played a shift on the captains line as well. I think for Nevers but not sure.
At the time I thought he was trying to keep the forwards fresh. I like rolling with 6D and 13F as those are our best 19 skaters, regardless of the Pino hatred here, far better than having Rud or Begley sub in on D.
Alright, just watched period 1 and almost half of 2. Pino was sprinkled in across 2 of the 4 lines in period 1.
Pitlick did not play to start the 2nd and Pino got 2 of his shifts. If it’s not Pino on the rush but Pitlick much higher chance Moore tries to pass to Pitlick and we don’t score goal 3. Not a long term strategy for success to play Pino for Pitlick but it worked out.
At 13:48 in the 2nd Brodzinski draws the hooking penalty with the crafty veteran move to grab the stick. You can see Bob yell “alright Pitt let’s go”. After that we got into a more normal rotation.
My guess is long shifts if it wasn’t an injury or equipment issue after watching period 1.
If the refs think Nelson could have avoided the goalie, then why didn't he get a penalty for running into the goalie?
I don’t think they can call it after the fact, only in real time.If the refs think Nelson could have avoided the goalie, then why didn't he get a penalty for running into the goalie?
