This is a much tougher opponent but I get what you're saying. Hopefully they get the split tomorrow and I'll be a lot less concerned.Make it 9 lol. Maybe an ass-kicking like this helps them pull their heads out of their asses, this team can certainly play a tougher more detail focused game than this.I AM FULLY ON THE CLIFF, I AM READY TO JUMP
MSU is a Frozen Four team this year. Chill dude
They are a championship caliber team. Eight goals is cliff worthy
I thought the ass kicking we received in Columbus would do that.
Held them to single digits!
I remember the days when you could sit down on a Friday night and watch a Gopher hockey game on TV. Sure miss those days. I'm not going to pay money for a substandard broadcast that has the quality of a high school production.
Complaining about the tv schedule is up there with the Big mistake clowns. The Gophers hands down still have more games on tv than any other program in the country.
When I started watching Gopher Hockey, the games were on channel 29 (45?) from old Mariucci and you had to have an antenna to get them. I’d guess the people like @slapshot appreciate how many games they can see now cause back then it would have been zero.
it ain't what it use to be.
Nothing is. It's not 1997 anymore. The cable industry is in shambles.
The Gophers have adapted the best out of any program out there. Yeah it's not perfect but no amount of bitching and whining ( not just you, seeing tons all.over the Internet tonight) is ever going to bring it back like it used to be
Not an unexpected outcome, Sparty is playing better than the Gophers this year! Hopefully they can come up with a split, but they will just have to shoot the puck and stop trying to pick an upper corner. Not a good game by Airey, but the defense and scoring didn't help much.
Go Gophers!
9-3 or 4-3… its only a loss on the pairwise. When the dust settles have tonight. They might drop to 4 and might stay at 3.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Pride on Ice??
I got to watch the game on an airplane so cannot complain with technology tonight. 😁
Team effort on this loss tonight. Some bad bounces around the net though too.
Maybe Bob is tanking so we don’t win the big ten. I honestly don’t want the bye. Need to keep playing that time of year. 🤔🤔😬
Postgame, tBob called our faceoffs “disastrous”.
Do we not have even 3 guys who can be .500? I don’t care if you build the lines based on spreading those 3 guys out evenly you can’t lose 20-44 and expect to win.
The worst lead in hockey is a 6-goal lead so I get what we were going for
Per our own @eric-vegoe
Most goals given up in a game:
15 UMD 1971
12 Michigan 1951
11 Michigan Tech 1987
10 Michigan Tech 1993
9 NoDak 2019
9 Michigan St 2025
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.

Pairwise a loss is a loss 2-1 or 10-1. Win tomorrow and this game will be much easier to digest. Unless Souliere gives up four softies tomorrow I think he will be our #1 goalie the rest of the way.
Most goals given up by a Gopher team you mean.

extremely true. You can’t chase a team this good all night. They just don’t even look like they have a rhyme or reason to taking the draws
Going 20-64 on face-offs is almost hard to do.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
There’s a new play I saw with Rinzel taking the puck in behind the net and try to feed someone and promptly give up and shoot. Turnover every time. And face offs were awful, won 20 out of 64. And defense was chasing, our entire defensive zone we were chasing. Lost our quick breakouts, when you’re slow they skate around you.
I’m starting to wonder if the players that were scoring early in the year are losing interest. What causes the talent to coast? It’s a conundrum. They need to step up, Wood, Moore, Lamb, Huglen, get to it. Are they all just coasting and letting the Zeimer, Paulson, Snuggerud line score? Bob has his work cut out for him.
If you watched that game and thought Moore was coasting I don't know what to tell you. He's been a lone bright spot anytime things aren't going well. Kid works all the time.
@chill-kessel
And Mittlstadt skates hard too, every shift but Wood, Lamb, and Moore are top scorers who need to score, not just the Snuggerud line.

You said Moore was coasting. Read your own post. Players can control effort, not whether the puck goes in. If they could every game would be 37-33.
A couple quick observations (while tending to a 5 year old so might have missed some things) from someone who was at the game tonight.
- The ice looked pretty bad and created some bounces.
- The Gophers were not in good position to handle those bounces.
- LOTS of missed passes
- When UMn got out of position in the D zone MSau made them pay
- Almost nobody finishes a check. I can't count how many times we turned off on the forecheck instead of finishing a hit
- While MSUs renovation is much better than it was. Everyone should know how lucky they are for the sight lines at Mariucci
- Rough game to watch, but the MSU fans were very welcoming

not finishing checks is something that’s bothered me about many of our teams for years, but this team especially has so many guys who can bang. Zeimer is probably the only one I can think of who consistently goes in there and bangs on the forecheck every time he’s out there, but we have so many guys with size that I would love to see us grind on teams more in that fashion.
I have been advised to NOT watch this game back after going to the alumni game in Shakopee tonight.
Do not like how this board is run?
Get your own board!

Now this is a good first post.

smh
The Gophers got thoroughly beat in every facet of the game from the drop of the puck. We got out hustled and pushed around all over the ice tonight. Tomorrow will be telling in terms of seeing what kind of backbone this team has. We came out tentative tonight and never really looked like the team I have seen flashes of. After a beatdown like that it will be interesting to see what they come out like tomorrow.
This team has a bad habit of relaxing after they score. It happened again tonight. I wouldn't have thought this team could, much less would, give up 9 goals.
There's not much difference between six and 9 because a team basically goes brain dead once the game is salted away. Still, like the second game at Mariucci where Minnesota held a late two-goal lead, the team sagged at the worst time. In the game at Mariucci, the team was depleted and tired they said. What's the excuse tonight?
This might be the worst game I've seen a Minnesota team play in the defensive zone for several years. There was no commitment to blocking shots, playing the body, or getting to pucks first. I would add that Airey does not inspire confidence. It was amatuer hour.
Say whatever you want, but that was a massive letdown tonight by a team who is ostensibly a contender for a national title and a team who knew full well what this game meant. Honestly, it's shocking. I felt Minnesota outplayed Portal State in both games at Mariucci. Tonight, all of those feelings have been erased. They are undeniably a better team at this point.
i dunno about "fire Bob" but " WTF BOB?!?!?!?" is warranted.
Also we can put to bed the previous comment that the Gophers are head and shoulders better than MSU. At least not the Gophers team of the past several weeks which has become an alarming trend.
Had to create a new account because I lost my login info for my last one. Also, not to turn the attention away from the team and to me but been busy since early October and without my phone. Got accepted to the Navy’s Officer Candidate School, graduated and commissioned last Friday, and now I’m back in Florida for more flight training.
Anyway, back to the Gophers. I don’t really feel the need to go on a long rant. Everyone has basically already said what has needed to be said. All I’ll say is this. Regardless of what happens tonight there needs to be a real come to Jesus moment with this team. The past few series have been concerning and the frustrating thing is, as many have pointed out, we know this team is much better than last night and good enough to win it all. Still time to correct their flaws but last night felt like a far cry from the team that swept Michigan last month or even the team that played MSU tight and came up just short the weekend after. Figure it out.
It’s funny to say the #3 team in the pairwise has a “must win” game in January but for the trajectory of the season this feels like a must win game today.
Every team has a bad game once in a a while. My concern is, this team has had two dreadful games in their last 5. That does not bode well at this time of year.
And it's probably redundant to say at this point, but most of the goals they gave up were a direct result of losing a faceoff. i know that has been beat to death this year, but it really shows that having a guy like Nelson, especially on the PK, on the dot at the drop was a key to how good they were the last couple of years.
so I did not see last nights disaster how many goalies did the Gophers play?
Aloha!

A little bit interesting to hear all those talking about need to win tonight, this time of year, etc.
Still 4 weeks in the regular season. Hopefully 3 weeks in the postseason (catching MSU will be challenging regardless of what happens tonight). Would playing better be nice? Yeah absolutely. However, this team has skated it's full lineup once in the second half of the season, and that was with Clark banged up and a game time decision. Last year Denver got swept by UND on the road in late January.
There are definitely things they need to improve/work on, but still lots of hockey to go. For one I'm still optimistic about this team and their potential. Control what you can control tonight. they need to show effort and play for a full 60 and the results will come. that's all I think needs to be said for tonight.
Are the refs even getting a watchable replay to see this?
Not that it matters. But, on the kick challenge, if it was a kick, I assume it doesn't matter if it hits a defender on way in? Because I couldn't tell for sure since they didn't slow down the replay on this part, but it looked like Howard might not have touched it until it crossed the line. (Ok, so I also may be grasping for straws but would rather not see him pull away from Snuggy in scoring on a goal he claims that he didn't really get.)
The way I saw it. The "kick" was questionable but it was saved and the rebound was then knocked in by a Gopher. I would have wanted that to count if it was the Gophers scoring. Are the refs even getting a watchable replay to see this?

Do you think this is what tBob did to the trash cans in the locker room last night?
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!

The explanation from the referee was that it was indeed “kicked”, but Howard is the one who actually scored the goal so the act of kicking resulted in a “pass” rather than the goal itself.
Extrapolating on that explanation it seems that since the original “shot” was initiated with a kicking motion, it would not have counted even though it did deflect off the goalie and Gopher defenseman.
I found it interesting because I also would have thought it was a good goal once it pingponged off a Gopher defenseman. They never slowed the replay down to show how close it was to going over the line before Howard tapped it in, but from what I saw it didn’t look like it was all the way across yet.
Super disappointing effort last night, it seems like they’ve regressed quite a bit the last few weeks. Obviously a lot of talent and depth on this team and they are capable of beating anyone, but right now they don’t look like a team capable of stringing together 4 consecutive victories against top tier opponents….
They did mention last night on the broadcast that a bug was going through the locker room and even the coaches had been under the weather (which is why they dressed an extra forward). The sloppy play and lack of jump sure made it look like that may be the case. I’m not sure if it is just supremely bad luck that it happened to coincide with the biggest conference series of the year twice or not (injuries and now illness), but it seems more like a lame excuse right now. Ultimately I don’t care if we play MSU 6 times this year and only beat them once as long as we start out 0-5 before finally beating them.
Have to admit that last night I officially went from believing they were one of 3-4 “teams to beat” to hoping they are a good team that gets “hot at the right time” when the postseason starts. Neither of our goalies seem capable of stealing a game, so our margin for error seems pretty low in a tourney format if our skaters aren’t at the top of their game.
They need some locker room leadership to hold a closed-door meeting and get everyone on the same page. I don’t know anything about the locker room dynamics, but wasn’t that one of the things that Nevers was praised for at the end of last year when there was discussion about whether he should come back?
I'm less worried about W-L per se at this moment and more interested in seeing this team playing up to their potential as a unit. Poor play in net, defensive lapses in their own zone and terrible special teams play is a recipe for long-term disaster. They need to mentally reset and pull themselves together. If they do that W's will follow.
@yakimagopher I’d have to say if anyone playing last night felt like I did a couple weeks ago I can understand why they looked like shit on the ice. If not the case after the game maybe tell Ben Gordon to grab a whistle and everyone on the line. “That one” there’s so much talent on this roster the way they looked last Saturday I’m surprised they followed it up with whatever that was last night.
