It’s not Motzko’s coaching so much it’s the players in OT and SO. But it does end up his responsibility.
It's absolutely coaching. You can tell that not only do they not practice 3x3, it's obvious that they have never even discussed the concept of it. The number of time that Souliere froze the puck with nothing but Gophers around him is proof of that. It’s not Motzko’s coaching so much it’s the players in OT and SO. @slap-shot I think there are some valid questions/criticisms re Motzko but that’s also true with any coach. Mike Sullivan is a good coach and was tasked with coaching the US team that outplayed Canada 2/2 games recently but his power play the one year (2018 or so) was so bad they got scored on more than they scored and was utterly embarrassing. They used the same drop pass this team does and eventually one of the assistants got fired/Kessel got traded. That’s just one example but you could come up with a ton of examples like Bruce Boudreau or various other coaches who were well above average but had their flaws.
Point being it’s hard to know even if you did fire Motzko (I’m not advocating that, he def deserves more time given what he’s accomplished so far) if you’d see vast improvement and idk who you’d replace him with. I can’t speak for Handy but that’s how I see it, this team’s main flaws are ST units that have been spotty and they’ve had too many spates of sloppy play and poor passing. I’d also say they need more goal scoring out at least one of their centers (who isn’t named Moore) so you can confidently put someone in the 2C role, they’ve been switching Clark, Pahlsson, and Huglen likely because of this (O see they did again for today’s game). If they figured out that stuff they could beat good teams more consistently but as it currently stands they aren’t there yet.
IDK about that last part, Souliere probably covered the puck because the players in front of him let up three huge chances in under a minute and looked absolutely gassed. He was probably trying to get a line change if anything. It's absolutely coaching. Then he doesn't understand the concept of 3x3. Or his team looked like shit because they were gassed and he wanted a line change lol
That seems crazyThe odd stat from yesterday's game is the Penn St is 5th in the nation at face off % and the Gophers won that stat 34-25. BTW, the #1 ranked team in pairwise and the polls, BC, is worse at face offs than the Gophers. They are ranked 52nd and the Gophers are 48th.
In 3x3 you get possession of the puck and then change. Freezing the puck is the last optionOr his team looked like shit because they were gassed and he wanted a line change lol
In theory I agree but guessing he knew something we didn’t.
Can we always have gymnastics before our B10 Net games? They never F up the program.
I’m optimistically hoping things finally start to click and the Gopher's are able to play their best game the rest of the way. If the Gophers can consistently play up to the level of hockey that they are able to play at, they will be hard to beat in the playoffs.
Hoping that a team can just flip the switch rarely works out
Hopefully it’s not another “White Out”!
Alright, we need three points now!
And we’ll see y’all at Mariucci next weekend!
LET’S GOOOOOOOOOO!!!
or, he's never been properly coached on how to play 3x3. Not really a crazy theory when you take into account how the entire team doesn't know what to do either. In theory I agree but guessing he knew something we didn’t.
Gophers and finishing chances continues to be painful
The announcer has forgotten both nights we have two Hobey candidates on our team……
Said no one ever. These unis are horrid.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Who wins the tiebreaker with Michigan and Penn?
Gophers have nothing to gain other than confidence. Would a Penn win in regulation gives them home ice against Michigan? If so, I could live with that.
God, who knows how much better that PP would’ve been if Rinzel doesn’t immediately break his stick but that was annoying to watch.
Our penchant for looking really good and really bad on the same PP is frustrating
You are excused simply because if someone slaps the M on it, you'll buy it. 😉I didn't want to like when they were announced them but they totally won me over. I am Gen X too for what that is worth.Gen X, thankyouverymuch.Said no one ever. These unis are horrid.
OK Boomer
wearing my taconite tonight!

maybe, but I am also in the camp where I didn’t want to like it when I heard about it, but it’s a nice alternate.
I can evolve. 😁
End of 1, tied at 0.

I agree that there might be an overall coaching issue re 3v3 but in theory there isn’t much coaching that should be needed. Pretty sure they know they need to maintain possession.

At this point, rinzel realistically isn’t in the running any longer.
Add Pahlsson to the injury list. Looked like a shoulder. Did not play at all the last part of the period.
I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey
Ugh was wondering why Moore was back centering that line.Add Pahlsson to the injury list. Looked like a shoulder. Did not play at all the last part of the period.

I thought I saw him out there for a shift a few minutes later. Something to watch in the 2nd.
They call their student section the Roar Zone….?...ok sure
Every time I watch the Penn State goalie I think of the Walrus goalie in the Geico commercial. He gets down on his knees whenever the Gophers enter the Penn State zone.

Just put together a video of how NHL teams do it, seems pretty simple. Doesn’t matter now but maybe next year try to improve there.

they were 4-2-5 last year, 4-4-1 the year prior, 3-2 before. This years team is just an enigma in OT
Mack 1-0.

Nice tip by OSU, hard to fault 31 on that one

yeah that’s a hell of a tip. Faceoff woes once again
BREAKING NEWS: Minnesota fires brand new face off specialist after coaching staff feels like they have contributed enough for the year.
I chuckled when the PSU center got thrown out of the dot and Pahlsson lost the faceoff cleanly to a winger.BREAKING NEWS: Minnesota fires brand new face off specialist after coaching staff feels like they have contributed enough for the year.
Wood 1-1.
