Lot of room to operate early in this period. Let's get a separation goal.

Brodzinski for hooking. Is he going to get benched again? 😀
NEVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3-0

Finally. Had to put this one away. Good battle by Nevers.
Nevers over his first 17 games this season 0 goals.
Over his past 9 games 3 goals and 2 more disallowed that certainly could have been goals.
Coach mentioned earlier this season that often times guys take time after being out to get back into playing their A game (injuries can linger even after being back and/or getting back in full rhythm/strength). I think we've seen that this season with Nevers and Koster but IMO they are rounding into form at the perfect time.
BACK TO BACK SHUT OUTS FOR CLOSER!!!!!
He is now tied for the ALL TIME Gopher lead with 13!!!!!
When Laffy left mid season for the Pros we were screwed what would we do with a walk on goalie?
I don't know may get the best goaltending ever in Gopher history!!!!
Yes I realize stats aren't everything but the Closer story is INCREDIBLE!!!!

he’s looked really good the last few weeks. Hope he gets to the all time lead especially in how few games he’s done it in comparatively
Closer shut out streak is now at 179:06 almost three full games.
5:54 of the first period last Saturday night and then the game had a full 5 minute OT.
86 straight saves.
In his Gopher career this is the 3rd time he has had back to back shut outs.
When he/the team gave up three goals in the 3rd period Friday night against Michigan State there were multiple people who said Airey should play Saturday night.
After that 3rd period Closer has given up 3 goals total over 5 games including two 3 on 3 OTs.
Coach knows what he is doing sometimes. 😉
We now get to sit back and see if we gain ground on Wisconsin and/or Michigan State in Pairwise or
Notre Dame and/or Michigan fall further behind us in the Big Ten standings (like last night).
Norte Dame at Wisconsin
Michigan State vs. Michigan at Little Caesers Arena in Detroit.
Last night Wisconsin and Michigan State won with Sparty winning at Michigan (Yost).
Brodzinski for hooking. Is he going to get benched again? 😀
tBob was yelling “that’s a bad call” on the bench so prolly not
What an awesome weekend, love Gopher Hockey! Well done guys.
Congrats to the Closer.
That was some fun gopher hockey. Love to see it. Closer will be the key to how far this team goes, and he is playing out of his mind.
The Gophers have a bye week after Notre Dame. If he plays next weekend obviously that's great but if they decide to keep him out he would have 3 weeks total from now until our next series after Notre Dame (home against Michigan).
There have been bigger moments this season, but the hardest I cheered so far is when Luke Mittelstadt pointed at the 3-0 scoreboard when the guy that slashed him late was trying to get him to retaliate and negate the penalty.
For some reason, I thought (last night) the crowd was chanting "ALL DAMN DAY" after every big Close save.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Was thinking about that as well, I can’t think of any goalie the gophers have had that had a better overall career. Wilcox is the closest I can come up with but Close has been more consistent. When Laffy left mid season for the Pros we were screwed what would we do with a walk on goalie?

I loved that!! Basically “you are unworthy”.There have been bigger moments this season, but the hardest I cheered so far is when Luke Mittelstadt pointed at the 3-0 scoreboard when the guy that slashed him late was trying to get him to retaliate and negate the penalty.
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.
He was very much "Nah... I don't need to get in a fight with you... I already won tonight, look up, you'll see it too"There have been bigger moments this season, but the hardest I cheered so far is when Luke Mittelstadt pointed at the 3-0 scoreboard when the guy that slashed him late was trying to get him to retaliate and negate the penalty.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
If anyone has video of that...He was very much "Nah... I don't need to get in a fight with you... Classic move there. Love it.

And special thanks to @Armadillo for giving me score updates as I toiled away at my side hustle.

Yeah it REALLY isn't fair that 5 minutes from the biggest accomplish in his sports life he gave up one of his worst goals of his life (the tying goal). I bet he will think about that goal for the rest of his life. Unfortunately that is life sometimes (especially in a single elimination tournament).
This is why I feel it's better to not focus on national championship wins and can honestly say I love last year's team and the joy they brought as much or more than the National Championship Gopher winning teams I've been able to experience. IMO last year's team is the best Gopher team I've seen which is the last 35 years.
What this year's team has done over the last 11 games defensively (16 goals total) has been quite amazing.
@trixr4kids Close is good but I still would take Rob Stauber.

I bet for a lot of people on this board Robbie is before their time. As a kid I really enjoyed his style of goaltending. He probably gave coaches heart attacks. 🤣
If I had to pick one Gopher who is my all time favorite I would have a hard time not picking Robbie.
Here is a video of him for those who may not be as familiar with him.
Well yeah for entertainment alone that’d be a good pick. Idk his stats or how they compared to league average at the time and he’s def before my time.
Once again Close was outstanding. Defense was very solid, not giving much time and space for the other team to pick up rebounds. Let’s keep this ride rolling!

Rob Stauber is first goalie ever to win the Hobey Baker award so yes he compared quite well to league average at the time. 😀
I like to joke that Robbie is the only goalie ever to lead his team in checks. 🤣
I would love to see Close get 14 or more!
I hope he doesn't allow another goal the rest of the way 🤣🤣🤣
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
The scoring depth on this team is something else. It’s someone new every week.
I thought Axel Begley was really solid. Hope Thomas is ok tho

I agree, made smart decisions with & without the puck.
Watching Clark in person really makes me appreciate his game, does so many things quietly well.

He's a top 6 forward next year
tbh, idk about that. He is one of my favorite players (we call him cousin jimmy as its a family name) but his biggest attribute is his motor. He doesn't have the high end top side of a Pitlick, Snuggerud, Moore, etc, and that's completely ok. He's a 4 year guy you'll be extremely happy to have and you need guys to fill that bottom 6 role and thrive in it.
A couple of thoughts from last night--
-- Agreed on the Begley thoughts. I think Bob/Miller played him in the right spots. His shifts were mostly short and most of the time with Chesley. The play that really stood out for me is when the puck came to him at the point. There was a PSU player coming towards him and instead of forcing the issue and trying to get a SOG, he dumped it in the corner.
-- Pino also did a couple of things defensively that won't show up on the scorecard, but liked his game as well.
-- I wonder if the guy who used to sit in the front row of the student section graduated. He was there earlier this year, but I have not seen him lately. He was great at getting the students fired up.
-- Fish only had a couple of head shaking moments last night. So that is a win.
-- I thought no one cared about B1G hockey?
-- For selfish reasons, I wish every Saturday game was played earlier than 7pm. Loved the 3pm game as I walked into my house at 9pm. I would even take 4 or 5pm starts. It doesn't have to be every series, but 3 or 4 of them would be great. Saves a night at the hotel.

Thomas took a skate heel to “the boys” with about 1min left in the game on Friday. So I am thinking they just kept him out to rest. He’ll be back next weekend.

That'll leave a mark, but rub some dirt on it and get back out there.

A play that stood out to me, too. Another one, when MN finally joined the game in the first and had some forecheck pressure Begley was on the weak side. Puck came around to the wing on the other side and you could see he really wanted to pinch and didn't. Had he the chances of a 2 on 1 were high instead PSU got the puck out and dumped it since they didn't have numbers.

Top 6 no but he’s gonna take a huge Lamb-like jump in production. He’s such a smart hockey player.
