Huglen gets 2 minutes for tripping and Fish gets 5 minutes for contact to the head.
5 on 3 for two minutes.
Gophers kill the 5 on 3 portion.
3 minutes left on the major.
With a 1:46 left on the major.
Nelson gets a cross checking penalty.
Another 5 on 3 coming.
Gophers kill ALL the penalties.
The Gopher Penalty Kill and CLOSER come up HUGE!!!!
5:14 of power play time with 3:46 of it 5 on 3.
Excellent job on the kill late in the period. Let's stay out of the box now.
PSU gift wrapped a chance to come back (whether the refs or the gophs putting themselves in bad spots, either way) and has one of the most abysmal 5v3 structures I’ve ever seen. After watching that, don’t think I can ever complain about our power play ever again. Huge kill. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the wind fully sapped out of their sails in the 3rd after that
The Gophers are extremely lucky to get out of that period. I don't understand taking those penalties against Penn. Very undisciplined and unlike this team.
Close the door on that period and get back to Gopher hockey in the third.
That’s the loudest the arena has been all season. Unreal display by the Closer
Fish wasn't kick out of the game and got a breakaway coming out of the penalty box. If he would have scored the building would have gone absolutely NUTS.
As a question on Fish’s penalty, though all major contact to the head was an ejection? Did they change that rule? Or is this the post WMU star player ejection change?
Carl Fish is a total disaster. Wow. He is a liability every time he steps on the ice. Roll 5 defenseman in the big ten tournament and NCAA’s.

that would have been epic.

It's is no longer an automatic DQ.
The ref can give 2 minutes, 5 minutes with no DQ, or 5 minutes with a DQ depending on severity.

Don't let Fish's mom see you post things like this. 😉

that was one of louder post middle period Rousers I have heard in a while. I like it!
KURTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111
score? don’t want to scroll on phone
Great work in front of the net.

You Suck!……. ALL!!!! NIGHT!!!! LONG!!!!
@driftryder Good effort. Shots lopsided for PSU in 2nd but mostly due to Fish 5-minute penalty (probably right call by rule but not malicious).
- @bluebandit24 Thank you. How are the boys looking?
head and shoulders the better team and really limiting psu scoring chances. This version minus the penalties is absolutely a Natty contender
Tonight's crowd is the largest regular season crowd (2nd largest overall) in Mariucci history.
Tomorrow's crowd will likely be larger than tonight.
Coach has brought the team back to the top and the crowds are back too.
Gopher hockey is a Minnesota TREASURE!!!!
Snuggy is getting soooooooooo many chances.
It's only a matter of time.
Snuggy scores at least twice tomorrow.

Totally cool with him saving them for postseason if we’re winning
Closer with his 12th career Gopher shut out. 90 games played
Adam Wilcox (132 games played) and Kellen Briggs (115 games played) are tied for the most at 13.
Over the past four games. Closer has given up 1, 1, 1 and 0.
If the off sides would have been called when Michigan State scored their own goal on Saturday two weeks ago Closer would have tied the all-time shut out record tonight.

tickets sold I’m assuming. Def not the most peeps in here in the last year.
but it was entertaining seeing two lines of guys trying to merge into one for the men’s bathroom after the second 😂

An a lot of them from the perimeter.

Gives a whole new meaning to a zipper merger (for people who aren't familiar this is normally a roadway term for merging onto a highway - that engineers use). 🤣
That Penn team seemed very different than teams of the past. I expected more run and gun from them. I wonder if they are changing their style or if they just don't have the horses to do that.

almost all od them. Textbook how to play PSU. Clearly frustrated the shit out of them tonight
Kinda a weird game. News flash Justen Close is good.
That kill at the end of the 2nd was exhilarating!

For the past 5 weeks the Gophers have been locking down everybody.

Minnesotans are NOT good at the zipper. 😬😂
Safe to say Mason Nevers is back to himself. Obviously his numbers aren’t gonna be there at the end of the year when you look back but he’s playing that crafty, confident heady Mason Nevers style that we’ve all grown accustomed to see over the years. I thought he was fantastic tonight.

I hope he comes back for a 5th year (Covid season rule makes it a possibility).
We only have two juniors this season (Pitlick and Huglen) so having another senior next season would be a good thing.
Closer's saves % is now 92.3 which is 7th in the country with only 3 of the 6 goalies ahead of him being full time goalies.
He has only given up 16 goals over the past 10 games.
Wow Close was on fire! Now that was championship type play. That was a really exciting game. Go Gophers!!
Over the past 10 games the Gophers have out scored their opponents 38-16 with three goals disallowed.
They are one bad period against Michigan State and the Saturday refs in Madison away from having a 10 game winning streak.
Closer and the PK were the story tonight. Gotta be more disciplined with the penalties.
@collegehockeyaddict From the beginning of the year I've felt this team should play a lock down defensive game and score off the transition. I think they've found that identity. They can win by scoring 3 goals if they can play this kind of defense.
To me, it felt like PSU was never in the game tonight, not even when they were on a 5-3 not once but twice. Close was dialed in, and they had almost no second chances.
Great defensive discipline by the team tonight.
Felt like the number of grade As PSU had tonight was extremely low even with the 5v3s. That is playoff/championship hockey and a solid team to do it against. They’re going to get some PWR help tonight as well. Finish off the sweep and we’ll be in a real solid spot
I agree the Gophers need to be more discipline (they have been for the season overall) but they were only short handed 3 times tonight. It was bad because it was all at the same time as a 5 minute major so Penn State had almost 4 minutes of 5 on 3.
Coming into tonight the Gophers had only been shorthanded 19 times over the past 10 games.
The Penalty Kill has been a weakness this season so it was great to see them have a good game.

I think a big factor is 4 of the top 5 defensemen on the team are under classmen and when you are playing the 3rd toughest schedule in the country it cost them some games in the first half of the season. With the loss of our top 3 defensemen from last year their playing time went way up this season and the experience they gained in the first half of the season is now paying dividends.
Cal Thomas is so good as a shutdown guy. Incredibly underrated.
Effectively ended Penn states chance at an at large tonight. Will be curious to see how they come out tomorrow. If the Gophs can get up to a 7, have to like how they’d match up with anyone from that cut line and below
