I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
Things that I’d like to see this weekend.
1. Most importantly, sweep and play a solid 120 minutes. Keep growing like they have been for the most part since Christmas.
2. The maroon out actually work.
3. Cap off a successful sweep with one of our guys flying down the ice to fire a slap shot into Michigan’s empty net.
Michigan just swept a pretty good team for the first time since the mid-90s. They now have a chance to keep playing, and they're always dangerous offensively. They will be super motivated to get a win against a higher-ranked team.
Minnesota has been applying a shut-down defense since Christmas, and this will be another good team to try it out on. Regardless of rankings, Michigan can beat anybody, and they're hard to keep off the scoreboard.
I'm expecting a split on the weekend and hoping Minnesota just plays two games that demonstrate they're tournament-ready.

The realist in me says that you’re probably right. The optimist in me hopes/thinks that we can get 5 or 6 points. This will be one of scenarios where the bye week was either good or bad based off of the results of this coming weekend. This time next week we’ll either be talking about how the bye week was great because it helped give our guys time to rest and get ready for a big series or we’re talking about how we came out slow and rusty on night one because we were off for two weeks and we lose a winnable game against Michigan and had to fight for a win on Saturday. Only time will tell.
I will also say that at the beginning of the season if you that we were going to finish third, behind Wisconsin, I would have been disappointed. With how this season has gone if we do well this weekend and retain third, look solid, and play tournament style hockey I’ll be happy. But if we cough up third to Michigan and have to settle for fourth I’ll be irate.
Things that I’d like to see this weekend.
2. The maroon out actually work.
I think we can safely say that based on the previous three(?) iterations of this, it doesn’t work. If they really want it to, they need to do like Notre Dame did last Friday for their green-out and hand everyone an appropriately colored T-shirt on their way in the door!
Exactly. Not just the first 1500 students... enough shirts for everyone.Things that I’d like to see this weekend.

In my opinion, a Maroon out may be the easiest to pull off of the other attempts. Just by the eye test, it seems more people have maroon sweatshirts/apparel than gold ones. I know I own more Maroon sweatshirts and shirts but have more Gold or White jerseys. That said, I don't expect a successful attempt at this again. Also, will the Gophers ask that Michigan if the Gophers can wear their Maroon jerseys that night? I think last year the Gophers had a gold out and they still wore their whites. Made no sense.

Yeah, that’s my worry. To me trying to get the crowd to color coordinate just feels very high risk, low reward. Sure it looks cool IF you pull it off. But if not, it looks weird. It was cool when football had the stripes work a couple of years ago for homecoming but other than that I don’t really remember it working. Especially with hockey, for whatever reason. Just let gopher hockey fans wear what they want and wear the home whites on Friday and the gold alternates on Saturday. Especially if there’s an opportunity to sweep. Keep it simple.
I wonder how the Gophers will handle the 5th year grad students during senior night. Since Closer, Brodzy and the Farm Kid went through the ceremony last year, will just partake in some after the ceremony photos and not get a framed portrait again while Fish, Koster and Nevers will actually do the on ice deal. Did anyone see how the women's team did it after Saturday's game? Or those who traveled to Notre Dame see how they did it?

I just asked. It will be current Seniors only.

Expecting a split. Sure Michigan has had their ups and downs this year but they’re still very good and hard to beat twice.
The thing I found interesting about Michigan's sweep this weekend is they only gave up one goal over the two games. It was a ND power play goal when Michigan got a bench penalty for under sportsmanlike conduct 1:33 into the game. Going the whole weekend without giving up an even strength goal is impressive.
Normally Gopher/Michigan games have a lot of offense but this weekend I suspect the games will have less open space as compared to previous games against them.

Then sponsor the shirts or find a company to sponsor. Though the 'U' needs to a better job of getting the word out. Football has had huge successes, and they have done stripes and not just one solid color.
Keep your stick on the ice...
If the U isn't going to properly publicize it, or hand out shirts of the correct color, they need to stop pretending it's a thing.Things that I’d like to see this weekend.

True… though have the ‘Gold Out’ and hand the yellow pom-poms. One, it’s affordable and two it looks cool when the crowd is shaking them, especially the student section.
As for shirt handouts you need a sponsor and fans will just complain cause they don’t get the proper size. Though if the want to do a shirt. Pick a color and stick with that color for color outs. Have the most basic shirt as possible. Maybe just the block ‘M’ and no sport on it. But in bulk and use for all sports.

They did the pom poms on gold out day and had one on every seat. The student section used them but that was about it.
You don't need anything fancy for the shirt giveaway. Solid Maroon with a Gold M on the front. Sponsor logo (if any) on the back in Gold.True… though have the ‘Gold Out’ and hand the yellow pom-poms. 2 Sizes... Medium, 2XL... that would cover the vast majority of the crowd.

Again, someone needs to shell out some money for shirts. Or the ‘U’ just needs to do a better job at pushing it. They have email addresses for STH’s and anyone who bought single game tickets. Send emails out, more than one email out. It’s not rocket surgery.
Plus, if you have a gold out, the team needs to wear their golds. A white out, the team wears their home whites. A maroon out, the team wears their road maroons. Home team has the choice of uniforms. So there’s no issue there.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Buy a halfway decent shirt, it's gonna cost the U maybe $5? But a seat in-house and you have the ticket price and concessions. When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
You do realize you’re dealing with the ‘U’ and their forever cycle of trying to reinvent the wheel.

Yes, I know. Now excuse me while I bang my head against the wall one more time.

Michigan looked desperate last weekend and I would have to assume they will play like that this weekend. Will Minnesota be able to match their intensity?

I could see Michigan being the more intense and desperate team on Friday night. Between that and Minnesota being off for a weekend I could see Michigan getting 2 or 3 points Friday night. But Minnesota will not want to get swept on home ice on senior night. So the edge for who’s playing with more intensity and desperation will shift over to the Gophers and I believe we’ll win Saturday night.

*If not for the blowout loss in South Bend.

pretty much every team gets smoked at some point in the year. BC and Quinny (probably the schedule moreso) might be the only exception this year.
BU lost 4-1 to ND earlier in the year.
WI lost 5-1 to Michigan
Mich St 6-2 to OSU (and 7-1 to Mich, 5-1 to MN, and 4-1 to ND)
Maine was swept by UNH a combined 11-4 2 weeks ago.
It was a bad loss no doubt, but not like we lost that badly to someone in the 40s or 50s. Hopefully a little healthier and better rested and they come out hot this weekend against a team they don't like

That's true, but I just didn't expect it from this team. They seemed to be playing with a shutdown defense and it suddenly just disappeared. Very weird and probably had more to do with effort. Sometimes a whole team takes the night off.
I'm willing to forget about it if they are. 😆
For the record, I project that it will be very difficult for this team to get through their regional, especially if they need to play either Boston school. If they can make it back to St. Paul, I would wager their odds improve no matter who they play.
Lots of tickets still available for this series. Hopefully there is a push this week to get tickets sold.

It'll be difficult for every team, but yes I agree with what you're saying. It is part of why they need to play well now to get off the 8/9 line and avoid BC for as long as possible (5 guys over 1PPG is a lot to try shut down). That said, anything can happen in a best of 1 just like we saw last, especially if you play that defensive style. I'm much less worried about that BU team (stop Celebrini, while difficult, and that whole team struggles. In their 8 losses, 7 total points. In the 2 ties, 2 points. In the 22 wins, 39 points. then the 3-5 we've beaten them all.
All that said, we'll get a pretty similar look to if we can do that against high end talent this weekend against Michigan. Going to need a big weekend with some physicality from Nelson's line if it's going to happen (and likely for the entire post-season if they're going to do anything).
I've seen a variety of social media posts by MN for the Gophers this weekend - not one mentions the Maroon Out. So, that's how that will go.
After the weekend off I hope the rest will help but fear a slow start Friday. Let's hope Snuggy will get back on a roll with his OT winning goal against Notre Dame . Friday the Gophers need to get their game legs and play back and must stay out of the box especially early on since Michigans P.P is good. If they can get a fire under them and play hard & smart they will be able to take third place.
Op didn't mention Matt Koalska night on Friday? Thought you guys would be in-the-know.

They advertised it at the games during the last home stand. I was going to add it to the 1st post but I could not remember if he was signing on Friday or Saturday.

I have an idea..... stop with the dum bass maroon out, gold out, stripe out BS altogether. Even if done well its not very cool. If done poorly it is quite embarrassing.
pom poms are for kids and cheerleaders.
What is cool? Those throwback white jerseys from a couple years ago with the gold breezer covers. Gold breezers need to be a permanent thing.
Win Friday. I am tired of this team coming out flat Friday and turning it up Saturday. Turn it up Friday and show you're a playoff contender every game.

The throwback jerseys were cool The breezer covers did NOT look good when sweated in, rather more like they peed their pants.
Wonder if he will be letting people try on his championship ring like he did when he was in Boston for the Frozen Four?

It appears that they have good chance at selling out Saturday's game. There are more tickets left for Friday, so that one is going to be tougher to do. Regardless, the crowds should be good this weekend.

The boys are going to Saturday only.
Does anyone know what is up with streaming for this weekend’s Michigan series?
The GPL schedule lists it as “Fox Sports App,” but for previous games this year, those games also showed up in the B1G app. I pay for a full subscription to B1G (out of state) so that’s my only access. And for some reason B1G does not list either of the games this weekend.
